BOE and Lenovo have joined forces to launch a new line of professional displays under the ThinkVision P Series. The monitors use BOE’s Oxide thin-film transistor (TFT) technology, which the company says delivers better performance and lower power consumption than conventional solutions.

Announced on August 22, the partnership brings BOE’s decade-old Oxide TFT technology into Lenovo’s ThinkVision lineup. Compared with amorphous silicon, Oxide transistors allow higher conductivity and lower leakage current, enabling smoother visuals while reducing energy use.

The ThinkVision P Series supports an adaptive refresh rate ranging from 24Hz to 120Hz, switching within milliseconds depending on the task. That means higher refresh rates for video and gaming, and lower rates for reading or word processing. According to BOE, power consumption can drop by more than 50% at 24Hz, meeting Energy Star 8.0 standards.

Targeted at professionals, the displays come factory-calibrated with 98% DCI-P3 color coverage and a 2000:1 contrast ratio. The end products reportedly include USB-C docking, HDMI 2.1, and a built-in KVM switch to make multitasking easier. Sustainability is also part of the design — the monitors use 20% recycled materials and were unveiled at an event in Nanjing under the theme “Smart Display Carbon-Initiated Clear Environment.”

With adaptive refresh rates, accurate colors, and reduced power draw, the ThinkVision P Series aims to offer creators and professionals a balance of performance and efficiency. The new monitors are now available in select markets.

Realme and BOE have launched a new display that will premiere on the upcoming GT Neo 6 SE. Unveiled at an event today, the display boasts a remarkable peak brightness of 6000 nits and improvements in other aspects of the panel such as brightness, eye protection, touch responsiveness, and more.

Realme and BOE debuts 6000 nits display

A standout feature of this display is its impressive local peak brightness of 6,000 nits, making it the brightest in the world. While that’s the peak, the display offers a global maximum brightness of 1,600 nits, and a manual maximum brightness of 1000 nits.

The manual adjustment is particularly relevant to users as it is the one achieved by manually adjusting the screen brightness to its maximum level using the phone’s brightness slider. 

The new display also supports a “game super HDR” feature that is said to offer a superior gaming experience with expanded dynamic ranges for stunning light and shadow effects.

While excelling in display capabilities, Realme hasn’t compromised on eye protection. The new display supports a new 3+1 Pulse low-frequency flicker, 2160Hz high-frequency PWM dimming, and hardware-level low blue light capabilities. Additional features include adaptive display, sleep mode, and paper eye protection to reduce eye strain.

Furthermore, the display uses industry-leading 8T LTPO technology that offers smoother refresh rate transitions, reduced power consumption, and faster display response times. Realme says the panel’s refresh rate ranges from 0.5 to 120Hz.

Then there are some AI features on board as well. Realme has introduced what it calls a “Greenfield AI” eye protection function, which detects user fatigue and adjusts the display accordingly for various scenarios like system interfaces, media content, and e-books.

Additionally, there’s an AI game eye protection feature that will optimize the display during games for eye comfort. 

The display also offers a 2500Hz instantaneous touch sampling rate for a responsive gaming experience, along with a “wonderful touch” function that customizes the touch experience for enhanced game control.

This new generation of display technology will debut on the Realme GT Neo6 SE, which is scheduled for an April launch. The company should announce more details about the smartphone pretty soon.

Foldable smartphones are finally getting to the masses, with several OEMs debuting in this segment last year. With the increase in sales, the requirement for foldable displays is at an all-time high. In a surprising twist, BOE has emerged as the new leader in the foldable display market, outpacing long-standing frontrunner Samsung Display. As per the report from Display Supply Chain Consulting (DSCC), BOE secured a commanding 42% market share in Q4 2023, while Samsung Display trailed at 36%.

The increasing research and development around foldable displays has finally paid off for the China BOE. Also, BOE’s ascent to the top is attributed to the substantial demand for foldable displays from Huawei, a key player in the smartphone industry. Huawei’s remarkable 122% increase in foldable display procurement during Q4 2023 fueled BOE’s surge.

On the other hand, the shift marks a substantial decline for Samsung, experiencing its most significant quarterly drop from 76% (Q3) to 36% (Q4). The dip signals the conclusion of Samsung’s uninterrupted 5-year dominance in the global OLED foldable market. The new development signifies a transformation in the foldable display market that reflects the interplay of demand and supply trends.

China’s BOE partnership with Huawei and robust demand for foldable smartphones made them stand in the first position for their Q4 2023 tenure. In another story, Huawei overtook Samsung as the leading buyer of foldable display panels, with an over 122% increase in comparison with the previous quarter. Several other Chinese OEMs launching foldable phones last year also catered to the increase in sales for BOE.

The trend seems not to last for long as Samsung Electronics is working to increase foldable panel purchases from Samsung SDI in Q2 2024.

Additionally, Samsung will launch the next foldable phones by the end of this year, including the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6. Apple is also working on a foldable smartphone, which could launch in 2026.

OnePlus and Oppo have officially announced a collaboration with a China-based BOE display manufacturer. Both brands will hold a press conference in Chongqing, China, on Oct. 24 to reveal more details about their joint venture and its potential impact on their upcoming devices. It is speculated that the upcoming OnePlus 12 will feature a custom-made display from BOE.

OnePlus 12’s display brightness tipped

According to a recent Weibo post by tipster Digital Chat Station, the new OnePlus phone will feature a 2K screen with a remarkable peak brightness of 3000 nits. He seems to be talking about the OnePlus 12’s display. The custom-made display is said to offer a better experience than Samsung’s AMOLED panels in various departments, such as color accuracy, brightness, and eye protection. The collaboration also suggests that the Find X7 series may feature the same display.  

He added that subsequent OnePlus models, which could be the Ace series comprising Ace 3, Ace 3V, and Ace 3 Pro, will have a 1.5K screen with an even higher peak brightness, surpassing 3000 nits. The current dimming technology incorporates a 2160Hz PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) with a single pulse DC.

The OnePlus 12 is anticipated to sport a curved 6.82-inch screen with a resolution of 3168 x 1440 pixels and support a 120Hz LTPO adaptive refresh rate. Additionally, the top-tier variant will offer an impressive 24 GB of LPDDR5x RAM and 1TB UFS 4.0 of storage. The device will pack the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip and a 5,400mAh battery that supports 100W wired and 50W wireless charging.

In terms of its camera capabilities, the OnePlus 12 is set to include a primary camera featuring a 50-megapixel Sony IMX966 sensor. This main camera will be equipped with OIS support, a sizable 1/1.4″ sensor, and a wide f/1.7 aperture. Additionally, the ultra-wide-angle camera is expected to sport a 48-megapixel lens with an f/2.2 aperture and a 1/2″ sensor, potentially the Sony MX581. BOE Surpasses LG to Become Second Largest Display Patent Holder in US

We know that BOE is already a significant player in the global display market. They produce screens for a wide range of products, from entry-level to flagship devices. However, this success is no accident. According to a South Korean lawyer, BOE ranks second in the number of display panel patents registered in the US, only behind Samsung Display. This is an impressive feat, especially considering the US is a major market for display panels.

BOE’s patent portfolio includes patents on a wide range of display technologies, such as OLED displays, LCD displays, and touch displays. The company has also been granted patents for its display manufacturing processes. The companies strong patent portfolio gives it a competitive advantage in the US market. It also allows the company to license its patents to other companies, which generates additional revenue.

However, it is important to note that BOE’s patents have been challenged by other companies, such as Samsung Display. In 2020, 2021, and 2022, BOE had 280, 300, and 337 patents rejected by the US Patent and Trademark Office due to Samsung Display’s existing patents. Of course, encountering issues with new technologies is common. Even Apple sometimes faces patent lawsuits. It doesn’t seem like these challenges will stop BOE.

In fact, experts suggest that if the number of patent applications continues to increase at this rate, BOE might surpass Samsung Display in a short time. The Xming V1 Ultra boasts BOE’s custom 4K optical engine with a 5-inch 4K LCD projection screen, achieving true 4K resolution, signifying the rise of the 4K era in LCD projectors.

On the other hand, the Xming V1 Smart Projector’s luminosity reaches an impressive 800 CVIA lumens, attributed to BOE’s Radiant S60 optical engine. Audio-wise, the V series stands out with its 6W high-power speakers and tuning by Boston Acoustics.

The Xming Q3 Pro, part of the budget-friendly Q Pro series, was also introduced. This model features the PhotonX fully enclosed optical engine, better resolution, and addresses corner blurriness common in LCD projectors. The brightness shoots up by 51% to 500 CVIA lumens. A collaboration with Boston Acoustics ensures cinema-like audio and the projector is fitted with advanced features like smart focus and adaptive wall color.

The international market-focused Xming Page One was also unveiled, being the first LCD projector to come with embedded Google TV and Netflix.

Samsung Display has received approval for mass production of OLED panels for all four models in Apple’s upcoming iPhone 15 series according to a report by The Elec. This is expected to provide a significant advantage to Samsung, as its competitors BOE and LG Display face production disruptions. LG Display received conditional approval for the Pro model, while BOE is encountering struggles with its supply commitments this year.

Samsung Display’s Opportunity Amidst Rivals’ Struggles

BOE is experiencing difficulties with the “Dynamic Island” feature, which requires hole display processing for all iPhone 15 models. Unfortunately, BOE’s panels are suffering from light bleed around the Dynamic Island cutout.

On the other hand, LG Display is facing delays in obtaining mass production approval for the Pro Max model. LG Display’s issues are exacerbated by concurrent production problems with the iPhone’s camera modules from suppliers Sony and LG Innotek, causing a parts backlog. This may influence Apple’s production prioritization towards Pro models, which have constituted a significant portion of iPhone series shipments in recent years.

Following LG Display’s conditional approval, efforts are underway to expedite the Pro Max model’s approval. Despite facing difficulties with bezel and hole display implementation for OLEDs, LG Display aims to increase its iPhone 15 Pro model OLED production. However, ongoing production disruptions for the iPhone 15 Pro Max may result in a larger profit share for Samsung Display, which also benefited last year from LG Display’s production issues.

In addition to these complexities, Samsung Display may increase its material and component orders amid the production intricacies. However, a patent dispute with BOE adds further complications to the market. BOE recently filed for an invalidation trial of one of Samsung Display’s US patents, related to Samsung’s diamond pixel structure, which BOE allegedly used when supplying OLEDs for Apple iPhones since the iPhone 12.

BOE has showcased a massive 110-inch 16K TV which is a great and refreshing alternative to projectors. The TV prototype was presented at the SID Display Week 2023 in Los Angeles. The BOE 16K TV offers greater display clarity over the lower 4K and 8K models. The prototype offers a four-fold increase in pixels above an 8K screen and 16 times the pixels count over a 4K TV.

The unveiling of the new BOE 110-inch 16K TV coincides with the Chinese company’s 30th Anniversary celebration. The SID Display Week 2023 brings together a rich collection of cutting-edge resolution screens. The prototype is about the same size as home theater projectors but with a more powerful 16K resolution. The leading home theater projectors cannot boast of anything near a 16K resolution.

The prototype has a pretty underwhelming maximum brightness of 400 nits compared to up to 1,400 nits from the best projectors and TVs. The frame rate on offer for the BOE prototype is 60Hz while some current TVs offer up to 120Hz. The prototype also comes with an LCD panel as opposed to an OLED, QLED, or Mini-LED. It has to be stated that this is still a prototype and could possibly not make its way to the market.

BOE 110-inch 16K TV showcased at the SID Display Week 2023 in Los Angeles

The BOE 110-inch 16K TV prototype has 16 DisplayPort cables which look quite clumsy. It would seem that the flipside of a 16K screen trumps the benefits. There is a little sprinkling of models/ prototypes with 16K screens.

The BOE 16K TV prototype may have a long trajectory if it is to transit into a production model. It is however interesting that the TV could be a stepping-stone to more developed models. Maybe in the nearest future, we will get a true 16K model with excellent features and few drawbacks.

There are speculations that Huawei is working jointly with ZTE and BOE to deliver a next-gen foldable smartphone with under-display selfie cameras. Under-display selfie cameras for foldable smartphones are not very common. The Mate X3 has a visible punch hole in the main flexible OLED display. A new Huawei prototype has been discovered that feature an under-display selfie camera. The Huawei x ZTE UDC foldable smartphone prototype was displayed by Digital Chat Station via Weibo.

The Huawei Mate X3 has an inward-folding design and the new Huawei prototype will provide significant improvements in that regard. The new prototype adopts the UDC screen technology. The prototype reportedly featured BOE’s latest and advanced flexible display. While the concept is believed to have come from Huawei, the main display was rumored to be from ZTE. The seeming collaboration of Huawei with BOE and ZTE could deliver the best UDC technology for the next-gen Huawei foldable.

The rumored next-gen Huawei foldable smartphone may possibly have the same wide form factor as the yet-to-be-released Google Pixel Fold, in addition to minimal bezels. The new Q8 display for foldables has a resolution of 2480 x 1116 pixels with 1,440 Hz PWM dimming. To put it in perspective, the Huawei Mate X3 had a display resolution of 2496 x 2224 pixels.

Under-display selfie cameras may finally be coming to foldable phones as Huawei partners ZTE & BOE

There are no official statements by any of the companies on the rumored Huawei x ZTE foldable flagship. There are also no indications yet on the expected release date of the model. Indeed, it is unclear whether the prototype will transit to a production model. More optics however are expected from Huawei on the leaked prototype foldable smartphone if the leak was authentic.

There’s a spacious 3-inch AMOLED cover display and a 6.74-inch main panel. The company has now detailed that the phone uses a BOE-made display with new Q9 luminous materials and adaptive dynamic refresh rate technology.

Vivo X Flip gets an immersive display

Vivo X Flip debuted earlier today and the company has now shared some interesting information about its display. As per the official announcement, the flippable brings unique adaptive OLED internal and external screens, manufactured by China’s BOE.

The Vivo X Flip series boasts a top-of-the-line flexible OLED display technology solution from BOE, which comes equipped with the company’s ultra-thin glass (UTG) technology. With UTG, the folding screen’s durability and flexibility have been significantly improved, making it thinner and less prone to display damage.

Further, the handset features a 6.74-inch OLED folding screen with BOE’s water drop folding and bending solution. The screen remains flat after bending and unfolding, however, there’s a notable crease. The panel is claimed to offer a smooth touch response speed with 240Hz touch sampling rate technology.

Both the internal and external dual screens use BOE’s new Q9 luminescent materials, providing an optimal color display with a wide color gamut technology and a peak brightness of 1200nit. The company has also incorporated ultra-high frequency PWM dimming technology that protects the eyes by reducing the potential damage caused by screen flickering in dark environments. In addition, the harmful blue light on the screen is minimized through the optimization of the screen’s light-emitting structural unit.

Apple Supplier BOE to Open New OLED Display Plant in Northern Vietnam by 2025

The display module factory in Bac Ninh will focus on the production of various small and medium-sized display modules, such as organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) and liquid crystal displays (LCDs). These modules will be supplied primarily to Apple, with the factory expected to be fully operational by 2025.

The module process, which involves combining individual parts to create a functional panel, is a key part of the display manufacturing process. Once the module process is completed on a panel half-finished product, a display module that can be combined with the finished product is created.

BOE’s decision to establish a display module factory in Bac Ninh is reportedly at the request of Apple. This move will facilitate Apple’s panel supplier factory audits, as the tech giant will no longer need to visit both Vietnam and China to verify the iPhone OLED post-processing module line. Moreover, suppliers of inspection equipment required for post-processing will be able to respond more quickly if BOE builds its factory in Bac Ninh.

In the short term, BOE will primarily supply OLED displays for the iPhone SE4, which is anticipated to implement OLED technology for the first time next year. The 6.1-inch OLED display for the iPhone SE4 is projected to be offered at a competitive price of around $40, providing BOE with an opportunity to increase panel production.

The establishment of BOE’s new factory in Bac Ninh will not only streamline Apple’s panel supplier factory audits but also strengthen the supply chain for Apple’s small and medium-sized display products. As a result, both companies stand to benefit from this collaboration, which will likely contribute to the growth and advancement of display technology in the years to come.

By expanding its presence in northern Vietnam, BOE will further solidify its position as a key supplier for Apple, while simultaneously boosting the region’s economy and technological capabilities. According to recent reports from The Elec, BOE, a trusted partner of Apple, is set to provide OLED displays for the upcoming fourth-generation iPhone SE. It has been suggested that this move is an attempt to make up for missed orders for OLED panels originally destined for this year’s iPhone 15 series.

Although BOE reportedly encountered production issues, it is now looking to produce OLED panels for the low-cost iPhone SE 4, with an estimated volume of around 20 million units in the coming year. It is worth noting that the iPhone SE 4 will not feature any new specifications but will instead use OLED inventory originally intended for 2021’s iPhone 13 or 2022’s iPhone 14. This strategy is seen as a smart move by Apple, as it will enable them to optimize their resources while still providing a high-quality product at an affordable price point.

Reputable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has also divulged information on the fourth-generation iPhone SE, stating that it will come with a 6.1-inch OLED display and an Apple-designed 5G chip. BOE is apparently investing in Honor, the former subsidiary of Huawei. The company is investing into Honor, which will help strengthen the ties between the two brands while also increasing their competitiveness in the market.

According to a new report, the known Chinese display maker is further reinforcing its relations with Honor. This would make BOE have a better standing in the country’s semiconductor display industrial chain, as per industry experts. The former Huawei sub brand had recently completed a new round of strategic financing from six new investors. This included the likes of BOE, China International Capital Corp Qizhi Equity Investment Center, Gousen Capital and Shenzhen Baoan District Investment Management Group.

Earlier this month, Honor stated that the company has been shifting its focus on “diversifying shareholding structure, and has always adhered to the principle of openness and collaboration.” For those unaware, BOE is a major supplier for various smartphone brands, which includes major clients like Huawei, Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, and Honor. The company is also best known for its OLED panel, which competes with Samsung and LG in the market.

As per Zhou Hua, chief analyst at CINNO Researchm “”For Honor, it is important to have a stable and reliable source of display panels as the company is ramping up efforts to expand its presence in the smartphone market.” So the strengthening of relations between the two will only benefit the company.

BOE has showcased what is the world’s first 600Hz laptop display. The current lineup of gaming laptops does not offer such a high refresh rate and the display will come with added technology. The current Nvidia RTX 4000 series are unlikely to support a 600Hz display.

It has been a race by original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to shift the boundaries of the display refresh rates in their products. It seems ages ago when the 60Hz displays berthed. Currently, some laptops like the Alienware XT7 R2 have a 480Hz display refresh rate. The gaming industry is however still desirous of higher refresh rates which will be beneficial to most AAA titles. BOE is working towards satisfying the growing crowd of gaming enthusiasts.

BOE is showcasing several display technologies at the World Display Industry Conference. The lineup of innovative BOE offerings includes the 34-inch ultra-wide Mini-LED gaming screen with 165Hz refresh rate, Z-shape folding smartphone displays, and a 16-inch 600Hz laptop screen. The 600Hz display also comes with 1.66ms fps. The laptop could use TN or IPS panels and either FHD or FHD+ display resolution. The aspect ratio of the 600Hz laptop is 16 10. The exact specifications of these impressive displays are not yet known.

It will be interesting to see the new displays debut in an actual product but this could be a few years away. Last year, BOE announced its 27-inch 500Hz display but it is yet to enter the market. BOE had said that a 500Hz refresh rate would be possible through an 8-lane eDP connection. However, industry experts have pointed out that a 600Hz panel will need a DisplayPort 2.0 connection to operate. Possibly BOE could be working on an innovative stream compression technology to accommodate the monster refresh rate.

BOE has just unveiled its new breed of MLED display technology. The new display is a breakthrough in its efforts to improve the transparent display technology. So here are all the details.

For those unaware, transparent screens have been available for the consumer market in the ultra high end segments. It has even had applications in the commercial sectors and has also been useful in supporting other technologies like augmented reality. But despite all of this, they have had some limiting factors apart from their huge price tags. However, it seems that BOE is addressing many of the woes of transparent displays with its new MLED panel technology.

So far, transparent panels function as both a window and a billboard display due to discrepancies in their pixel structure or circuitry. Although, the Chinese display maker has announced the new MLED screens that offer improvements in both of these aspects. BOE has claimed that it has worked out how to space and connect its pixels in a manner that is better for displays to function as a transparent panel.

Thanks to this, the company claims that it has achieved an optimization result in transmittance that now hits up to 65 percent. This figure is on the regions of the MLED programmed to be opaque. BOE has also stated that its new MLED display technology can hit brightness of up to 1,000 nit and a contrast rtio of 1:100,000 under certain circumstances as well. In other words, this could be the new and improved future of the transparent displays.

There have been speculations that Apple will not use BOE as a supplier for the upcoming iPhone 14 OLED screen. However, a recent report from China says that the Chinese company is set to begin mass production of the iPhone 14 screens for Apple. BOE’s status as a supplier for the iPhone 14 OLEDs recently came under scrutiny due to design changes observed in the iPhone 13. BOE had been accused of unilaterally changing some design elements in the panel.

BOE’s display panels for the iPhone 14 were reportedly certified by Apple last week. This paves the way for the company to deliver its supply target by starting production this month. While mass production commences by July ending, shipment of the panels will begin by September. September is a traditionally busy month for Apple when it usually announces its new iPhones.

BOE is expected to deliver up to 5 million iPhone 14 display panels which are about 5.6% of the 90 million units Apple requires. Samsung has the bulk of the supply order with 60 million units (~67%). BOE will only supply the 6.1-inch LTPS OLED panels for the iPhone 14 vanilla model. It is unclear what is the distribution of panels according to the different models in the iPhone 14 lineup. If the news is confirmed, then BOE will be offering such a service to Apple for the third time after delivering on the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13. Neither BOE nor Apple has provided any details yet on the matter at this time.

Earlier this year, China’s BOE made a deal with Apple for supplying the OLED display panels used in the new iPhone 14 series which is expected to be launched in September. However, BOE was caught changing the circuit width of the thin film transistors on the OLED panels it was manufacturing for iPhone 13. This led Apple to halt its orders. Now, as per a new report, Apple is again evaluating samples of BOE displays and may place a large-scale order.

According to a report by South Korea’s The Elec, this week, Apple will be evaluating BOE’s samples of OLED panels aimed for the upcoming iPhone 14 series. And if things go right, Apple may even proceed to place a bulk order.

The Chinese display manufacturer is expecting to receive approval from the Cupertino company within a month, says the report. Moreover, If Apple decides to give a heads up, BOE will start mass-producing the panels for the standard iPhone 14 model sometime between July and August.

The Report says BOE is a few weeks behind its South Korean competitors, as Samsung Display and LG Display are likely to start the production of the iPhone 14 OLED panels at the end of this year.

It is also reported that BOE will supply around 5 million units at most due to its recent debacle with the panels for the iPhone 13.

We know that Apple iPhone 14 series is going to have four models- iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Max, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone Pro Max. Apple will be replacing the mini version with a Plus/Max variant.

The standard iPhone 14 and 14 max will not carry many design changes. However, the Pro and Pro Max will feature a new cutout, with a hole-punch plus pill design. Also, the regular models will feature the prev-gen A14 chip whereas the Pro and Pro Max will boast the new A15 chip.

It will be interesting to see how Apple is going to justify the price of the regular models since they are almost the same as previous-generation iPhone 13 models.

Although there were recent rumours of BOE no longer supplying OLED displays for Apple’s latest iPhone 14 series, it seems that the latest news indicates that Apple will still be ordering OLED displays for its iPhone 14 series from the 3 same companies who supplied the iPhone 13 series OLEDs last year, which are respectively BOE, Samsung and LG Display.

The news comes from market research agency Omdia (via ITHome), which recently reported that Apple’s iPhone 14 series will be equipped with the latest LTPS and LTPO OLEDs manufactured by BOE, Samsung and LG Display.

According to the report, Samsung will be the largest supplier of OLEDs for Apple this year, as it will supply the displays of the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Pro Max and iPhone 13 for the Cupertino tech giant in 2022. 

Meanwhile, LG will be supplying OLEDs for the standard iPhone 13, iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro Max, while BOE will be only supplying the OLEDs for the standard iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 for Apple in 2022.

The report also mentions several key screen details of the iPhone 14 series. The iPhone 14 and 14 Plus will be equipped with LTPS OLED panels which seem to hint that the iPhone 14 does have higher refresh rates than the previous generation, but refresh rates may not be variable as LTPO panels. Design-wise, the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus will still have the iconic notch on top like the iPhone 13 series.

Meanwhile, the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max will feature LTPO OLED panels, which is the same as the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max, but the major difference here is that Apple will be using a two-hole cutout housing the selfie camera and the Face ID module on the display, instead of the notch.

As for forecasts, in the report, Omdia notes that Apple could be developing a new technology that allows the Face ID facial recognition module to be under the screen by 2024, and by then the two-hole cutout can be minimised to a one-hole cutout. As for the iPhone 15 series, India expects Apple to fully integrate the two-hole cutout design into all its iPhone 15 devices which include the standard iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus.

Lastly, Omdia forecasts that Apple will be ordering 205 million LTPS and LTPO OLED displays from its suppliers in 2022, and the breakdown of the shipments are that Samsung will hold 60% of display shipments to Apple, LG Display 25% and BOE 15%.

Beijing-based display manufacturer company, BOE is well known for supplying its high-quality OLED displays to TVs, smartphones and even laptops in both the Chinese and global markets. 

But the company is looking to take things to the next level as the mainstream Chinese news outlet, People’s Daily Newspaper, reported that BOE successfully pioneered the next generation of mini-LED display panels within an independent research team in the company.

BOE had revealed their revolutionary next-generation P0.9 mini-LED display at SID 2022 International Display Week recently in which the panel is a sub-millimetre light-emitting diode display, meaning it measures less than 1mm in thickness. The mini LED display is made of a glass-based material.

As to why it is revolutionary, the report mentions that according to a BOE spokesperson, the P0.9 mini LED has high peak brightness and strong contrast levels. The LED panel not only has the normal advantages of OLED like low power consumption, uniform brightness across the panel, and healthy eye protection but since it is a mini-LED, the display can also be stitched in any size. 

The spokesperson added that as a leader in mini LED technology, BOE has also been developing a series of mini LED display products, which have greatly improved the display effect by incorporating glass-based mini LED backlights and related technologies, and will continue to lead in the consumer display industry whether it be live streaming sports events, providing for e-sports gamer, or for applications in the next generation of TVs.

Recently, the Honor 70 series were launched with BOE-supplied OLED displays. Namely, BOE had supplied the Honor 70 Pro Plus with a 6.78-inch 10-bit QHD+ 120Hz LTPO OLED flagship-class display to boot. The Honor 70 Pro Plus is also quite the performer as well, with MediaTek’s top-end Dimensity 9000 SoC powering the device on a day-to-day basis.

SID display week was organized recently in San Jose, USA. Many companies including Samsung, Visionox, and TCL showcased their best display technologies but the Chinese display manufacturer, BOE, stole the show with its unique 17.3-inch foldable AMOLED display for laptops.

BOE’s foldable display, the world’s first and largest of its kind, drew a large number of visitors at the exhibition. The display features a 100% DCI-P3 color gamut and ultra-slim bezels. It has a 4:3 aspect ratio and offers a 2560 x 1920 resolution. Moreover, the f-OLED display comes with 10bit RGB and HDR500.

For the unversed, f-OLED is BOE’s one-of-a-kind flexible OLED technology solution. It comes in several forms such as full-screen display, foldable display, and rollable display. It can be integrated with multiple features such as under-display fingerprint recognition, under-display camera, and biometrics. Hence, opening up a whole new world of flexible displays.

BOE revealed that the new f-OLED displays will be supplied exclusively to ASUS for the ZenBook 17-Fold OLED laptop launching later this year. BOE also won the award for Best Technology Demonstration for its 17.3-in. foldable OLED display.

The company also showcased the world’s largest 95-inch 8K OLED display at the exhibition. This display is created using high-end TFT technology and a white OLED vapor deposition process. The display delivers pixel-level light management and maximum HDR image quality, demonstrating the company’s technological supremacy in large-sized OLED displays.

Aside from BOE, TCL also revealed some impressive display technologies. It unveiled its 34-inch WQHD R1500 curved Mini LED display designed especially for e-sports. The Mini LED display offers a 21:9 ultra-wide aspect ratio, a 165Hz high refresh rate, and a fast-responding HVA screen with a smaller halo.

Ths week is the International Display Week and Chinese display manufacturer BOE Display isn’t letting it slide past without unveiling one of its numerous innovative products. The company has showcased a 95-inch 8K OLED display product.

Although 8K display screens are not among the tp-selling smart TV at the moment, BOE is likely envisioning a proliferation in 8K displays in no distant time. The 8K display has a resolution of up to 7680×4320 pixels. It also comes with a display contrast ratio of 1 million to 1 as well support for a 120Hz refresh rate, and a 99% DCI-P3 wide color gamut.

The new 95-inch OLED screen adopts an 8K high aperture ratio based on transparent capacitive pixel design, which effectively improves the aperture ratio of the backplane. The TV also packs an ultra-narrow frame design. Under the condition of ensuring a high charging rate and high uniformity of the backplane, the display peak brightness can reach 800nits, while the average brightness is 150nits which is said to be an industry-leading level.

Furthermore, the smart display is equipped with HDR algorithm based on the OLED “true black” display effect, This enables it to achieve millions of ultra-high contrast ratios and 10 bits of color depth.

The 95-inch OLED display uses BOE’s super-large OLED oxide backplane technology, based on a series of technologies such as ultra-thick metal deposition technology, deep hole etching technology, and oxide TFT structure optimization. It is equipped with a drive compensation algorithm to further improve the uniformity and stability of the super-large 8K resolution OLED display in other to achieve the desired quality and to ensure pictures moving through the display at a high speed do not get smeared.

The is yet another leading product for BOE in terms of super-large OLEDs after its remarkable exploits in the liquid crystal display (LCD ) field.

Chinese company BOE has reportedly inked a deal with Cupertino-based tech giant Apple for the production of the iPhone 14 display. The deal is reported to be worth 50 million yuan ($7.75 million) and will see BOE producing up to a quarter of the OLED displays for iPhone 14. BOE is China’s leading OLED manufacturer and the second in the world after Samsung.

BOE will provide the 6.1-inch panels that will be present in the vanilla iPhone 14 models only. Higher models from the upcoming iPhone 14 series are excluded from the arrangement. These higher models (iPhone 14 Pro, Max, etc) will still be catered for by LG and Samsung. The new business is a boon for BOE which is entering the current iPhone production trajectory for the first time. BOE however already has a functional partnership with Apple for the production of replacement versions of current models and panels for older iPhones.

BOE is also reported to have made inroads into the iPad and MacBook production with reports that it will supply OLED panels for next-generation iPads and MacBooks. The new Apple-BOE partnership will see BOE expanding its Sichuan plant to meet the demand, as well as equipping it with the requisite power requirements.

BOE is riding on the back of a very strong performance in OLED panels’ development and production within the last year. BOE had a 60% increase in OLED production last year to cement its leading position in the market.

Last month, Samsung launched the budget range Galaxy A series smartphones like the A13 and A23 in India and other global markets. The devices come with in-house display panels, but that might change soon.

According to a BusinessKorea report, the Chinese display maker BOE will provide the displays in the Galaxy A13 and A23 series smartphones starting May 2022.

But that’s not all as industry insiders have said that Samsung has proposed that BOE produces the display panels for its next-gen flagship smartphones. But as we know, the Samsung flagships feature the cutting edge LTPO technology OLED panels, and to meet their standards, Samsung Electronics has requested BOE to verify its technology first. Experts on the matter have stated that meeting the technical quality requirements such as thermal shocks and life tests will be the make or break of this potential deal.

As we know, Samsung is the main supplier of foldable display panels right now, so the Korean giant might be looking to free up some production capacity for their foldable panels by outsourcing the production of regular LCD and OLED panels from China’s BOE. On the topic of foldable, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 is rumored to debut this year in the month of August. Additionally, the Google Pixel NotePad foldable smartphone is said to enter production in Q3 2022, so Samsung will likely need all the production capacity it can muster to keep up with the demand.

Chinese AMOLED display-producing factories had an annual average utilization rate of 53.7% in 2021, which is a 10% increase compared to 2020.

Among them, the utilization rate improved the most for TCL CSOT, from 32.7% annual utilization in 2020 to an impressive 74% in 2021, the latest report from CINNO Research shows (via IT Home).

However, it is BOE that continues to be the manufacturer with the largest production area among AMOLED panel factories in China, with a market share of 37.4% in 2021. This share is down 7.6% compared to 2020, though.

BOE is followed by Visionox, with an 18.3% share in 2021, which is an increase of 1% when compared to 2020. Standing third is Hehui Optoelectronics EDO whose share in 2021 stood 15.6% — a decrease of 1.8% from 2020.

The data also shows that the overall installed capacity area of ​​domestic AMOLED panel factories rose by 26.9% in 2021, while the production area increased significantly by 57.0%.

BOE has currently locked horns with Samsung, with the former trying to secure more orders for the latest iPhones. A new report suggests that BOE will supply Apple with OLED LTPO displays for its higher-end iPhones in 2023. But presently, the company is having to put up with the global chip shortage resulting in significant production cuts.

The HONOR Magic4 series was unveiled this Monday. The latest flagship smartphone lineup from the former sub-brand of Huawei includes two models, namely HONOR Magic4 and HONOR Magic4 Pro. Like most premium phones in the market, they also flaunt high refresh rate OLED displays with LTPO tech. However, unlike the rest, their panel suppliers are different.

According to Ross Young, CEO of DSCC (Display Supply Chain Consultants), the LTPO displays on the HONOR Magic4 series are supplied by BOE and Visionox. For the unaware, all the other smartphones in the market with an LTPO screen get their panels from Samsung Display.

This means the HONOR Magic4 and the HONOR Magic4 Pro are the world’s first smartphones featuring LTPO displays from suppliers other than Samsung Display. Additionally, these panels are HDR10+ as well as IMAX Enhanced-certified (China only) and support 1920Hz PWM dimming.

As far as specs are concerned, the 10-bit 120Hz curved screens on the duo measure the same 6.81-inch and can go as low as 10Hz. However, their resolutions, aspect ratio, and screen-to-body ratio are different.

The panel on the vanilla model has a resolution of 1224 x 2664 pixels, a 19.59:9 aspect ratio, and a 94.2% screen-to-body ratio. On the other hand, these numbers are 1312 × 2848 pixels, 19.54:9, and 93.5% on the pro variant.

The changes in the specifications are likely due to the different cutouts for the front-facing cameras. The Magic4 has a centered punch-hole for its single camera, while the Magic4 Pro sports a pill-shaped hole on the top left side for its dual cameras.

OPPO announced the OPPO Find X5 series yesterday after teasing it for the past few days. The original lineup includes three models, namely OPPO Find X5, OPPO Find X5 Pro, and OPPO Find X5 Pro Dimensity Edition. Out of these, the vanilla variant uses display panels supplied by BOE.

After the launch of the OPPO Find X5 series, BOE revealed that it exclusively provides curved OLED panels for the regular OPPO Find X5. This screen is curved on four sides and sports a punch hole at the top left corner.

As far as specs are concerned, the BOE-supplied OLED panel on the OPPO Find X5 is an LTPO flexible AMOLED screen measuring 6.55 inches diagonally. It has a resolution of 2400 x 1080 pixels (FHD+), 10-bit color depth (1.07 billion colors), and 402 PPI.

The display supports up to 120Hz refresh rate and 240Hz touch sampling rate. Talking about color gamut coverage, it can cover 97% of NTSC, 100% of DCI-P3, and 100% of sRGB.

The screen’s brightness can reach up to 1,000 nits and it has a screen-to-body ratio of 92.7%. Last but not least, it is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus.

On the other hand, the OPPO Find X5 Pro and the OPPO Find X5 Pro Dimensity Edition use Samsung Display’s E4 2K AMOLED canvas with LTPO 2.0 technology. This panel is better, and therefore, it is fitted on expensive phones.

BOE is one of the leading display panel manufacturers and the company has been trying to increase its shipments to Apple for the iPhones. But it appears that the company is facing issues to reach the target.

As per the report coming from The Elec, BOE is facing issues for producing OLED panels used in the iPhones because of the ongoing global chip shortage. It further adds that the products will be impacted this month and the next month.

LG Semicon, which is providing display driver ICs to BOE for the Apple iPhone screens are falling short of the target goal and because of the lack of production capacity from foundries, the company is supplying the display driver ICs to LG Display before BOE.

This means that BOE will be decreasing the OLED panel production capacity from three million units to two million units next month. Apple has reportedly ordered up to 10 million OLED panel units from BOE for the first half of 2022.

At this time, it is not known if the display production issues will impact the production or supply for the Apple iPhones but that seems to be quite unlikely given that Apple isn’t dependent on one supplier.

BOE is ramping up its production for flexible smartphone OLED panels and is converting three of its existing factories into OLED suppliers for Apple. With this move, the company is likely to overtake LG Display by 2023 and become the second-biggest supplier in the list of companies providing OLED panels for iPhones.

The New York Times acquires Wordle

On January 31, The New York Times announced its acquisition of popular word game Wordle for an undisclosed price in the low seven figures. The publication assured the existing and new players that the game will continue to remain free to play and there will be no changes in its gameplay.

At the same time, Josh Wardle, the developer of the game, issued a statement that he will work with NYT to transfer wins and streak of long-time players. Wordle was originally released in October but its popularity skyrocketed in January.

Craob X – A laptop without ports

An unknown company called Craob announced a portless concept laptop dubbed Craob X last Monday (January 31). We don’t think this product will ever hit the market, however, the idea is interesting.

This notebook without ports has slim bezels around the display, 7mm thickness, and 0.8kg weight. The computer charges via a magnetic charger that attaches to its back like an Apple MagSafe charger for iPhones.

Lastly, this charger also acts as a hub for ports. It includes all the essential ports, including an SD card slot and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Apex Legends now available on smartphones

Apex Legends: Mobile finally gets a soft launch after months of beta testing. The battle royale game is now available for download on Android in countries like Argentina, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Australia, and New Zealand.

Whereas, interested players in other regions can pre-register the game on the Google Play Store. Unfortunately, there’s no word on iOS as of now.

The developer of the game had previously confirmed that it will be fully released for Android and iOS by 2022.

India to get 5G networks soon

On February 1, the Finance Minister of India officially confirmed that the auction of 5G airwaves in the country will begin later this year. The commercial rollout of the next-gen mobile networks is expected to start by the end of March 2023.

At the same time, the government is planning to introduce fiber internet connections across all villages by 2025.

A monitor with a 500Hz+ refresh rate

BOE is slowly growing to be an alternative to Samsung Display and LG Display. The company has announced various breakthroughs in the past. Last week, it showcased the world’s first monitor with a 500Hz+ refresh rate.

This panel has a 27-inch LCD panel with an FHD (1080p) resolution and an oxide backplane. It supports 8-bit color, 8Lane eDP output, and up to 1ms response time.

OPPO Reno7 series debut in India

The OPPO Reno7 series made its debut in India last week. The lineup consists of two models, namely OPPO Reno7 and OPPO Reno7 Pro. They are priced at ₹28,999 and ₹39,999 respectively. The handsets offer MediaTek chipsets, 65W fast charging, stunning design, capable camera system on the Pro, and more.

These smartphones were accompanied by OPPO Watch Free and OPPO Enco M32 in blue color. As far as the phones are concerned, the Pro is the same as the model sold in China, whereas the vanilla variant is totally different.

Google Chrome gets a new logo

Google Chome gets a new logo after 8 years. The new logo is slightly different for every platform. They will go live in the next few months.

First and foremost, there’s no change in color except their saturation. Secondly, the logo no longer has shadows.

As far as platform-specific changes are concerned, the new Google Chrome logo has a gradient on Windows, a 3D look on macOS, and a flat look on Chrome OS. Additionally, the Chrome Beta gets a ribbon with a ‘BETA’ tag on macOS and a blueprint-like finish on iOS.

An interesting budget smartphone from OnePlus

Key specs of a phone called OnePlus Nord CE 2 Lite leaked last week. The features of this handset are so unique for a OnePlus-branded budget smartphone, we expect it to compete against the Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G.

The device is said to come with a 6.59-inch FHD display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 695 SoC, 64MP + 2MP + 2MP triple camera setup, 16MP selfie camera, 5,000mAh battery, and 33W fast charging.

Sony is acquiring Bungie

A few days after the Microsoft-Activision Blizzard acquisition deal, Sony made an announcement of it buying Bungie on January 31. The deal is said to cost $3.6 billion for the Japanese tech giant.

Bungie will remain independent under Sony after the acquisition. The studio will continue to work with other platforms. 

Realme 9 Pro series gets a launch date

On February 3, Realme disclosed that the Realme 9 Pro series will go official at 1:30 PM IST on February 16. The lineup includes two devices, namely Realme 9 Pro and Realme Pro+.

As the name suggests, the Realme 9 Pro+ will be the better of the two with features like an in-display hybrid sensor for fingerprint and heart rate, OIS-enabled 50MP Sony IMX766 primary camera, MediaTek Dimensity 920 chip, and more.

Known display maker BOE has recently converted one of its production sites in China to manufacture larger OLED displays for a next gen smartphones and other devices. Now, a new report has suggested that the new site will also supply future Apple iPads as well.

According to TheElec, the display manufacturer converted the facility to make larger OLED panels for a number of different electronic products. But one of its primary client would reportedly be the Cupertino based giant. For those unaware, BOE is currently the supplier of the iPhone 13 series’ OLED displays. In other words, it arrives as no surprise that both companies would expand their partnership to include other products from Apple as well.

This new facility will supply the smartphone brand with larger OLED displays, which will apparently reach 15 inches in size for what is said to be the next gen iPads. It was previously rumored that the iPhone maker is planning to launch iPads with larger displays in the future, so the new report is also in line with this estimation. Furthermore, the repurposed factory will be able to manufacture OLED displays with two layers of red, green, and blue emission, which would enable the future iPads to offer higher brightness from their screens.

Although, it is still too early to tell if BOE will be able to manufacture these panels at a commercial level owing to the complexity of the display technology. As of right now, Apple buys OLED panels from Samsung and LG as well, however, the company always seeks to expand its supply chain to avoid any risk associated with employing just one supplier. Keep in mind that this is still just an unconfirmed report, so take it with a pinch of salt for now and stick around for more updates.

Earlier this week, BOE announced that its 6th generation of flexible AMOLED production line has just entered mass production. The site for the advanced display technology facility is situated in the southwestern city of Chongqing, China.

According to a PanDaily report, the known Chinese display maker is planning on expanding its flexible displays portfolio. The cutting edge production line will join other manufacturing sites in Chengdu and Mianyang. During the mass production ceremony, BOE President, Liu Xiaodong stated that “In the current information and digital age, new application markets such as smart mobile terminals, smart wearable devices, and smart connected cars are showing explosive growth trends. This is increasing the demand for high end display technologies such as flexible displays.”

As of right now, the company already has 6 key projects operating in Chongqing, with the latest 6th generation flexible AMOLED production line being one of them. It even has its 8.5 generation of TFT LCD panel line and the BOE Chongqing Smart System Innovation Center in the region as well. All of these facilities combined are estimated to include around 86 billion Yuan (roughly 13.5 billion US Dollars) in terms of investment.

Furthermore, the latest 6th gen flexible AMOLED production line covers a massive area of 970,000 square meters. This facility is also independently designed and developed by BOE, with the panels being produced set to target small and medium sized high end display markets. In other words, we can expect to see the new flexible panels in a number of new consumer electronic products sometime next year.

OPPO kickstarted the OPPO INNO DAY 2021 conference today. The company made multiple announcements, however, the star of the show, OPPO Find N, will be only unveiled tomorrow. Ahead of that, a report reveals the display suppliers of the company’s first foldable smartphone.

According to a report by The Elec (via SamMobile), the yet-to-be-announced OPPO Find N uses a 7.1-inch foldable OLED panel supplied by Samsung Display. This screen is protected by UTG (Ultra Thin Glass) instead of polyimide film. However, the external 5,45-inch OLED panel comes from BOE.

Further, the internal folding screen supports up to a 120Hz refresh rate. Despite that, it consumes less energy as it utilizes LTPO  (Low Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide) TFT (Thin Film Transistor).

Up until now, Samsung Electronics has been the sole OEM to offer UTG and LTPO tech in its foldables. With the OPPO Find N, OPPO becomes the first-ever Chinese OEM to offer these advanced foldable technologies.

The report further notes that even Xiaomi and vivo will use Samsung Display-supplied panels for their upcoming foldables. For the unaware, TCL CSOT provided foldable and external screens for Xiaomi’s first foldable smartphone, Mi MIX Fold.

The forthcoming Xiaomi MIX Fold 2 is said to arrive with an 8.01-inch OLED foldable panel with UTG from Samsung Display. However, the external 6.52-inch OLED screen will be from TCL CSOT.

Lastly, vivo will use a Samsung Display panel for the internal screen and a BOE panel for the external screen. Whereas, Huawei scrapped its plans to use Samsung Display panels earlier this year and went with BOE instead. Honor is also expected to use BOE.

Last week, Honor announced its latest smartphones in the market — Honor 60 and Honor 60 Pro. At the launch event, China-based display manufacturer BOE revealed that it is supplying the screen for the top-end model.

The Honor 60 Pro display, which has a four-sided curved design and an OLED panel, is being supplied by BOE. It is claimed that this is the first time in the industry that a four-sided corner screen is used for the display for better design aesthetics.

From what the company has revealed, the top bezel on the Honor 60 Pro smartphone is 32 percent than that of the iPhone 13 Pro while the side bezel is about 43 percent narrower. The narrow bezels on the phone offer a better screen-to-body ratio.

The display of the smartphone also comes with support for 1920Hz high-frequency PWM dimming which has high strobe frequency and thin stripes. In comparison, the iPhone 13 uses 480Hz low-frequency PWM dimming.

The Honor 60 Pro features a 6.78-inch OLED display with a screen resolution of 2652 x 1200 pixels, 429PPI pixel density, and a screen contrast of up to 500W:1. It also comes with support for DCI-P3 100% wide color gamut, HDR10+ certification, 1.07 billion color display, a 120Hz screen refresh rate, and more.

The display is certified by the Rheinland TUV low blue light certification, which is more eye-friendly when used for a long time. The device is powered by the Snapdragon 778G Plus, paired with 8/12 GB RAM and 256GB of internal storage. It is powered by a 4,800mAh battery and supports 66W wired fast charging.

Chinese display manufacturer BOE is in the process of ramping up its production to meet the demand for flexible smartphone OLED panels by Apple.

This will be done by converting three of its existing factories, namely B7, B11, and B12 into OLED suppliers for Apple, analyst firm UBI Research has claimed (via The Elec). Because of this, BOE will likely overtake LG display by 2023 to bag the second spot in the list of companies supplying OLED panels for iPhones.

BOE’s flexible OLED panel production capacity will be hitting 144,000 substrates per month by the fourth quarter of next year, up from the present capacity of 96,000. This is level with Samsung Display’s current capacity of 140,000 substrates per month.

As for LG Display, its capacity stands at 30,000 substrates per month but the company plans on expanding it to 45,000 substrates per month for flexible OLED panels and 15,000 for rigid OLED panels.

BOE was also converting B7, B11 and B12 from their current low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) thin-film transistors (TFT) setup to low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) TFT.

The display manufacturer currently relies on B7 and B11 factories to manufacture OLED for Apple, both of which are located in Sichuan province in China. B7 handled the front-end process while B11 the back-end for the iPhone 12. And for the iPhone 13, B11 is handling both the front and back-end processes.

BOE will be able to supply 15 million units of OLED panels to Apple for iPhone 12 and 3 million units for iPhone 13 this year, Choong Hoon Yi, CEO of UBI Research has said. All in all, it will account for 10% of the total OLED panels used by Apple on the iPhone this year.

For 2022, Apple is expected to ship 240 million units of the iPhone. Samsung will accordingly aim for 150 million units, LG Display for 70 million, and BOE for 50 million units. BOE will thus be able to overtake LG only by 2023.

China is set to overtake South Kore in OLED as well as LCD display market. Chinese display maker BOE is expanding its partnership with Apple, which will increase its presence in the OLED and LCD market as well.

According to a BusinessKorea report, BOE has began the shipment of 6.1 inch OLED panels for the Cupertino based giant’s iPhone 13 series last month. These shipments are expected to further rise after some testing at Apple. BOE had previously only supplied OLED panels to refurbished iPhone models. But now, the Chinese display maker is responsible for up to 40 percent of Apple products that use OLED panels.

On the other hand, Samsung Electronics‘ share in the supply chain for OLED has fallen over time. Back in 2017, Chinese LCD panel makers had caught up with LCD manufacturers in South Korea. This appears to also be reflected in the OLED panel market as well, with BOE leading the Chinese manufacturers. As of right now, LG Display and Samsung Display are the top two largest producers of OLED in the global market.

Although, the growth of the two brands is slower than their Chinese counterparts. While Samsung and LG showcased an average annual growth of 12 percent and 19 percent respectively, firms like BOE and CSOT are seeing 25 percent and 52 growth rates annually respectively. In other words, they are expected to catch up to these South Korean firms soon and even possibly overtake them.

Last month, news broke out regarding the upcoming Samsung Galaxy A73. Details on this smartphone’s primary camera emerged. Now, weeks later, we also get to learn about its display.

According to a report by The Elec (via SamMobile), Samsung Electronics is testing OLED panels from three different suppliers for the Galaxy A73. One of them is unsurprisingly Samsung Display. Whereas, the other two are China-based BOE and TCL CSOT.

This is not the first time Samsung is testing Chinese displays for its phones. Last year, TCL CSOT became the sole supplier of OLED displays for the Galaxy M41. However, for unknown reasons, this phone was shelved and replaced with Galaxy M51 featuring a panel from Samsung Display.

Anyway, CSOT managed to supply panes in a low quantity for certain legacy models of the Galaxy M series this year. On the other hand, Samsung tested BOE-made displays for the Galaxy S21. But unfortunately, the deal did not go through due to undesired quality.

The two Chinese display makers are back again for Galaxy A73, Nonetheless, only time will tell if they will be successful in inking a deal this time around. 

For those who are wondering, Samsung Electronics has been trying to broaden its supply chain partners for quite a while now. Samsung Display has been the sole supplier of OLED panels for Samsung Galaxy smartphones for more than 10 years.

The South Korean electronics giant wants to reduce its dependency on Samsung Display for OLED panels. By opting for displays from other manufacturers, the company could get them at a cheaper price. The firm could not only make a profit out of this move but could also pass down this as a benefit to customers by lowering the price.

As far as Galaxy A73 is concerned, the device will reportedly be the first Samsung mid-range smartphone with an OIS-equipped 108P primary camera.

Earlier today, the Vivo S10e was announced in China with no fanfare. It appears the reason for that is because a successor is coming next month. According to a leak from China, the Vivo S12 series is launching next month and it will come with a new design.

The Vivo S10, Vivo S10 Pro, and the Vivo S10e all have a notch albeit of varying sizes. It is a design that can be termed outdated when compared to those from competitors. If you are one of those that don’t like the wide-notch on the Vivo S10 and Vivo S10 Pro, then you should look out for their successor coming next month.

According to the Weibo account @Arsenal, the Vivo S12 will have a flat and rigid display supplied by Samsung. Considering Samsung doesn’t have any display with a wide rectangular notch, we can expect the phone to have a centered punch hole. He also adds that the back of the phone is flat and the frame is metallic and flat.

For the Vivo S12 Pro, the source said the display will be supplied by BOE and it will be curved and flexible. It will also have a 3D curved glass back and a rounded middle frame. He also adds that the Vivo S12 Pro will be launched in three colors when it is available for purchase while the Vivo S12 will be available in only one color.

There is no information about their processors, cameras, and battery capacity. Nevertheless, we won’t be surprised if some of the specifications of the Vivo S10 series are carried forward since the focus seems to be on the design of the new phones.

All of these are unconfirmed, so even though the source has a good track record, we advise the info be taken with a pinch of salt.

BOE Technology Group has just began the construction of the world’s largest production plant that will manufacture display modules for mobile devices earlier this week in the Qingdao, Shandong province in China.

The production site is expected to improve the Chinese display maker’s manufacturing capacity, which, in turn, would help boost its competitiveness in mobile display market. Notably, this factory would also help the city of Qingdao build a key national electronic information industry along with a high end research and development and manufacturing base, as per the company’s official website (Via ChinaDaily). The company’s total investment in this site is expected to be around 8.17 billion Yuan (roughly 1.27 billion US Dollars).

The project is situated in the Qingdao West Coast New Area in China. This new manufacturing site will produce display panels for mobile devices such as smartphones, tablet PCs, and even laptops. Interestingly, the company is also planning on the complete production of mobile phones and other products in the factory later in the future. The first batch of screen panels is expected to roll out by the end of next year.

Furthermore, the new site will also reach its full capacity in March 2024. BOE stated that its mobile screen panels have started mass production, and its new production site in Qingdao will help met its market needs display modules that will be used for medium to small mobile devices across the globe.
