A developer’s routine cleanup task reportedly turned into a disaster after a small mistake in AI-generated code wiped an entire drive.

The incident, first described in a Reddit post, involved code generated by ChatGPT Codex (version 5.3). The user had asked for a simple PowerShell script to remove Python pycache folders. Instead, the script ended up deleting the contents of the user’s F: drive, including project files and Docker data.

What went wrong

According to the post, the issue came down to a subtle escaping problem in the path string. The generated script used a backslash () to escape quotation marks. That approach can work in certain command-line contexts, but things get messy when PowerShell calls cmd.exe via cmd /c. In this case, the escaping didn’t behave as intended. The path variable was effectively reduced to just \, which Windows interprets as the root of the current drive.

Combined with rmdir parameters for silent, recursive deletion, the command reportedly ran without prompting for confirmation. The result: everything under the drive’s root directory was removed.

It wasn’t a complex exploit or some obscure bug, just a small mismatch in how different Windows shells handle escaping.

The episode highlights a growing trend sometimes referred to as “vibecoding”. For simple tasks, that can save time. But when commands interact directly with the file system, small errors can escalate quickly.

PowerShell and cmd.exe don’t interpret escaping the same way. In native PowerShell, the correct escape character is typically the backtick (`), not a backslash. Mixing the two environments introduces edge cases that aren’t always obvious, even to experienced users.

There’s also the broader Windows command-line reality: destructive commands like rmdir or Remove-Item -Recurse -Force don’t necessarily include built-in safety checks unless explicitly configured to prompt.

The developer reportedly managed to recover some data from backups, but much of the drive’s contents were lost.

Incidents like this don’t mean AI coding tools are inherently unsafe. They do, however, reinforce a basic rule: always review generated scripts carefully. Running commands in a sandboxed directory first, or removing force/silent flags during testing, can help avoid worst-case scenarios.

AI can speed up workflows. But when it comes to file operations, a single misplaced character can still have outsized consequences.

Age verification is the real hurdle

Before Adult Mode can go live, OpenAI needs a reliable way to tell whether a user is under 18. Simo stressed that the company’s top priority is accuracy, especially avoiding a situation where adults are mistakenly flagged as teenagers, or worse, minors slip through the system.

Right now, OpenAI is in the early testing phase of its age prediction model. The system uses AI to analyze user behavior and estimate age, rather than relying only on simple “Are you 18?” checkboxes. For data privacy, OpenAI allows users to opt out of training data collection at any time. The company has confirmed that Go subscriptions also apply when using ChatGPT via WhatsApp at 1-800-ChatGPT.

ChatGPT Go: Pricing and availability

ChatGPT Go is available in India for Rs 399 per month, with billing managed on a monthly basis (no annual plan yet). Payment methods include credit cards and UPI. At present, the plan is exclusive to India and will gradually be available to all users in the country.

OpenAI is exploring new ways to generate revenue and has not ruled out the possibility of introducing ads into ChatGPT. In an interview with The Verge, ChatGPT head Nick Turley said the company is open to the idea but emphasized the need to be “very thoughtful and tasteful” if it moves forward. He said ChatGPT may not be suitable for advertising because it must closely align with user goals, but other OpenAI products in the future could support different business models.

Turley said he remains confident in the subscription-based approach, which has driven rapid revenue growth. OpenAI expects to generate $12.7 billion in revenue this year, more than triple the $3.7 billion it made in 2024, according to Bloomberg. Despite this, the company still operates at a loss and does not expect to achieve positive cash flow before 2029.

ChatGPT recently surpassed 700 million total users, and as of April, the platform had 20 million paid subscribers. Turley said most users remain on the free tier, but added that this user base creates an opportunity to convert them to premium services.

As the CEO reveals, it’s a resource intensive process

The latter quickly became a trend where everyone started converting their selfies into “Ghibli-fied” images for their social media. But, as you may have already noticed, you’re rather lucky if you get it right within the daily limit. While you just have to upload your photo and ask something simple like “make it a Ghibli-style photo” or “Make it Ghibli art”, it often responds with “I wasn’t able to generate the image because the request didn’t follow our content policy”. It also generates totally different images sometimes, and it feels like it’s not willing to generate what you want.

Well, the sudden increase in traffic has put a significant load on the servers, and in the words of CEO Sam Altman, “we are refusing some generations that should be allowed; we are fixing these as fast we can.” Initially, it was meant to be open to ChatGPT’s Plus, Pro, Team, and free users at the same time, but they had to impose some rate limits due to the strong demand. Nonetheless, Altman also mentioned that they are working on making this process more efficient and hope that the wait won’t be too long.

As of writing, I can generate up to three Ghibli-style images per day as a free tear user. It also takes significantly more time than generating an image with a text description. So it looks like this Ghibli-style image generation is much more resource-intensive than standard image generation. As the CEO noted, “Our GPUs are melting.” It’s a great feature to have, and we hope they find ways to make it more efficient soon.

Cybersecurity concerns have already surfaced, with prominent firms identifying vulnerabilities and DeepSeek itself confirming a major cyberattack last week.

Dewardric McNeal, a senior analyst at Longview Global, underscores the broader implications: “This isn’t just about stolen data—it’s about mapping public sentiment, tracking industry trends, and influencing narratives.” The concern extends beyond individuals; industries and policymakers fear that DeepSeek’s open-source approach could allow China deeper insights into U.S. supply chains and technological developments.

The government official stated that this new AI model could be ready in just 8 to 10 months.

In the event by the Indian AI Mission, Ashwini Vaishnaw revealed that researchers in India have been developing an AI ecosystem framework to support its own foundational AI model. This is being developed to offer an experience tailored to Indian users. It will also understand the linguistic and contextual needs of the Indian users, bringing inclusivity while eliminating biases.

The Union Minister of Electronics and Information Technology also talked about India’s computation prowess since the domestic AI model is being developed with a computational facility that employs 18,693 GPUs. To recall, ChatGPT was trained using around 25,000 GPUs, while DeepSeek was trained with 2,000 GPUs.

A typical popular AI model like ChatGPT costs about $3 to use for an hour, India’ AI model could cost just Rs 100 (roughly $1.15) thanks to government subsidy. This news also arrives after UC Berkeley researchers managed to replicate DeepSeek AI for only $30.

On average, daily searches for “Gemini” hover around 204,991, but during the ChatGPT outage, that number skyrocketed to 327,058. This suggests that users actively sought alternatives when their go-to chatbot became unavailable.

Interestingly, the rise in Gemini searches mirrored the rise in searches for “ChatGPT down” during the same timeframe, highlighting a clear correlation. Reports from DownDetector indicate that the ChatGPT outage began around 8:00 AM London time on June 4th.

While Gemini emerged as the most popular alternative, other searches like “Microsoft Copilot” and “ChatGPT Alternative” also saw a rise. Daily searches for “Microsoft Copilot” typically average around 11,090, but on June 4th, that number jumped to 16,677, a 50% increase. Similarly, searches for “ChatGPT Alternative” spiked to 11,000 within the first few hours of the outage, compared to a typical daily average of 898. However, it’s important to note that these alternative searches pale in comparison to the surge in Gemini interest.

Marc Porcar, CEO of QR Code Generator, sees this as a validation of Google’s efforts to position itself as a major player in generative AI. “The clear parallel trend between the ChatGPT outage and the surge in Gemini searches suggests that people see Gemini as an obvious alternative,” commented Porcar. Additionally, GPT-4 Turbo can now generate captions and descriptions for images, and even handle text-to-speech requests.

But the learning doesn’t stop there. Since its initial announcement, GPT-4 Turbo has further enhanced its knowledge base. Visiting the ChatGPT website will take you directly to the AI chatbot’s home screen. 

However, using ChatGPT directly without creating an account has its drawbacks. It won’t be able to save or share your chats and have voice conversations. TechCrunch reports that there will also be slightly more restrictive content policies. Hence, it’s recommended to use ChatGPT with a created account if you use it frequently. Additionally, other OpenAI products like DALL-E require one to create an account. The latest update is still beneficial for those who do not rely on ChatGPT much. 

ChatGPT continues to be a popular AI chatbot globally. Over 100 million individuals from 185 countries are said to be using it weekly. ChatGPT competes against Google’s Gemini which is gaining traction and also Microsoft’s Copilot.

Claude 3 comes in three distinct flavors: Haiku, Sonnet, and Opus, each offering varying levels of capability. Anthropic boasts that the entire family delivers exceptional performance across multiple dimensions – multimodality (handling different data types), improved accuracy, enhanced context understanding, and faster response times. Additionally, the new models exhibit a greater willingness to tackle challenging questions, addressing a limitation found in earlier Claude versions that sometimes shied away from prompts deemed risky.

While all three models offer a significant performance boost, Opus takes center stage as the most potent member of the family. Anthropic claims it demonstrates “near-human levels of comprehension” for complex tasks, further showcasing its capabilities through a “Needle in a Haystack” evaluation, where it excelled at recalling information with near-perfect accuracy. Opus is also touted as a problem-solving whiz, adept at handling math challenges, generating computer code, and exhibiting superior reasoning abilities compared to GPT-4.

However, no technology is perfect, and Claude 3 is no exception. While Anthropic emphasizes improved accuracy, the issue of “hallucinations” – factually incorrect information generated by the models – persists, albeit at a significantly reduced rate compared to previous iterations. Additionally, Opus encounters some lag in responding to queries, exhibiting speeds comparable to the earlier Claude 2 model.

Despite these limitations, Haiku and Sonnet each have their own strengths. Haiku shines in delivering quick responses and extracting information from unstructured data, although it might stumble when faced with complex math problems. This could make a lot of other tools more useful, too, like helping you plan your studies or keeping track of your fitness progress.

However, the idea of a chatbot remembering details about users has its downsides. There’s a fine line between helpful and intrusive, and OpenAI knows this. They’ve made it so you can check what the bot remembers about you, ask it to forget certain things, or adjust settings in the Manage Memory section. There’s also a Temporary Chat option for those times you want to chat without leaving a memory trace.

By default, this memory feature will be on, and OpenAI plans to use these memories to improve how ChatGPT works in the future. But for now, it’s just being tested with a small group of users.
