You can either get a 256GB microSD card and wireless charger or a 360° cam.

In Korea, the gifts are equally interesting judging from the details of a leaked flyer. The flyer not only states the gifts but also confirms the existence of a 256GB variant.

READ MORE: Samsung Gear Fit 2 Pro Images and Features Leaked; May Get Unveiled at IFA 2017

If you purchase the 256GB model, you get an AKG Bluetooth Speaker or a Nemonic Printer which retails for $120. The 64GB model gets the new Gear VR with the remote control ($94) or a LED case ($40) and a 5100mAh fast charge power bank that retails for $60.

Since the Galaxy Note 8 is going to be pretty expensive, these additional gifts are not bad.

Samsung announced recently that it was working on a new Gear VR that won’t need a phone to function and we just might have our first look at the device.

The image is from Visual Camp, a company working on the eye-tracking technology for the device. The first thing you will notice is the name. This is not the Gear VR but the Exynos VR III. A Samsung tablet placed beside the headset shows the specs of the device and also that of a previous version, the Exynos VR II.

Exynos VR III Specs

The Exynos VR III is powered by a 10nm hexa-core Exynos chip. The chip is made up of two Samsung M2 cores clocked at 2.5GHz and four ARM Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.7GHz. There is a Mali G71 MP20 GPU. The display configuration is listed as two WQHD+ screens with a 90fps refresh rate and single 4K display with a 75fps refresh rate.

Exynos VR II Specs

The Exynos VR II on the other hand is powered by a 14nm hexa-core processor. The processor is made up of a Samsung M1 dual-core chip clocked at 2.4GHz and four Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.6GHz.

This also has two display configurations. One has two FHD screens with a 90fps refresh rate and the other is a single 4K screen at 60fps. The GPU is an ARM Mali T880 MP12.

The Exynos VR III will also support hand tracking and also voice and and facial expression recognition.

Samsung isn’t the only one working on a standalone VR headset. Google has plans to announce standalone VR headsets later this year and HTC released the HTC Link which has Six degrees of freedom tracking and doesn’t require you to slide in your phone but connects to it via a cable. The Link only works with the HTC U11 though and is a Japan exclusive.

The info comes from industry insiders who say the display is a OLED. Samsung says crossing the 1000ppi mark eliminates the feeling of nausea caused from usage. Unlike the current Gear VR that requires the use of your phone, this will work independently.

2000ppi is pretty high. The Oculus Rift has a ppi of 461, same as that of the HTC Vive for each of its screens. The Galaxy S8 has a pixel density of 570 and that is the highest on any of its phones. But we are not bothered, as we believe Samsung Display is up to the task.

At this year’s edition of Display week, Samsung showed off a new 3.5-inch panel with a ppi of 858. We guess that is not enough to prevent nausea.

Apart from playing games, the new headset will be perfect for watching movies as the high resolution means videos are no longer pixelated.

The new Gear VR headset is expected to launch with the Galaxy S9 next year and is sure to have an expensive price tag. At the moment Google is also working on a pair of standalone Daydream VR glasses with HTC and Lenovo. The headsets will be powered by Qualcomm chips and are expected to launch later this year.

Asides that, it also announced the new Gear VR headset which now comes with a controller.

The new Gear VR headset, like the former is made in partnership with Oculus and comes with a controller that makes interacting with games easier and much more fun. For those of you with keen eyes, you will notice the controller looks very much like that of HTC’s Vive.

The controller has a circular touchpad for navigation; a trigger button for grabbing, shooting, and aiming depending on the app; and also has integrated home, volume, and back buttons. Samsung has designed the controller such that it works with one hand.

Since there is a new controller, Samsung and Oculus are working on over 70 new titles that will take advantage of the new hardware. They have also said the controller will work with existing touchpad apps. The controller’s SDK will also be available to developers in a few weeks and you can even submit your request here.

READ MORE: Samsung Unveils Exynos 8895 Octa-Coe Processor: First Exynos 9 Series Chip

The headset itself doesn’t look much different from the one released last year alongside the Galaxy Note 7. It has a USB Type-C port, an adapter for microUSB, and compatibility with the S7, S7 Edge, S6, S6 Edge, and S6 Edge+ and should work with the refurbished Galaxy Note 7 when it launches in June.

An example is Samsung, and according to latest reports, they have four AR and VR projects to show off at MWC.

The projects which were developed in Samsung’s C-Labs department are Relúmĭno, Monitorless, VuildUs, and traVRer. Lets take a look at each one.

Relúmĭno

This is a Gear VR app created to help visually impaired people read books and watch TV with new levels of clarity. What it does is enhancement of visuals and texts. It is stated that it has the “ability to remap blind spots by displacing images and uses an Amsler grid chart to correct distorted images caused by metamorphopsia” (a condition where straight lines appear wavy). Relúmĭno will also allow visually impaired people watch TV without needing expensive visual aids.

VuildUs

VuildUs is a combination of a 360° depth camera and a mobile app. It allows you to have a preview of what a piece of furniture would look like in your home before purchasing it. First, you need the camera to scan your home and build a VR version of it. When that is done, all you need is a VR headset and once you launch the app, you can shop for furniture and see how it fits into your home before purchasing. One advantage of VuildUs is that you don’t need to measure the space in your home before you purchase that sofa or coffee table as it lets you see if it fits in real time.

Monitorless

Monitorless is a pair of glasses that combines VR and AR together. What it actually does is allow you to view content from a computer or smartphone without the need for a display. You can access the contents of your phone by pairing the glasses via WiFi Direct. You can also mirror the content of your computer on your phone which you can then view through the glasses. The use of electro chromic glass even makes it possible to switch between VR and AR. The video should probably explain better.

traVRer

Last but not the least is traVRer. It is a a 360° video platform that you can use to explore popular locations around the world without leaving your house. It is similar to what Google offers with Street View but accompanied with sound and video.

All four projects will be on exhibition at MWC where we should get more details.

Samsung released the Gear VR in November 2015. More than a year later, they are planning to launch a new model for the Galaxy S8.

The new Gear VR will be spicing things up a bit. Report has it that it will feature a single hand controller like Google’s Daydream View and Xiaomi’s Mi VR. Another new feature is a front cover that protects the phone. The info comes from Roland Quandt who posted the details on twitter. His tweet says the new Gear VR will have model number SM-R324, picking up from SM-R323 for the original version.

READ MORE: Average Selling Price of Chinese Smartphones Now Closer to Samsung

There is no mention of the price but chances are it might be higher than what the original sells for. The Gear VR is pried at $99.99 (¥688) and buyers still have to buy a third party controller. Now that a controller may be added, the price may increase. The Gear VR is currently more expensive than the Daydream View and Xiaomi’s Mi VR.

The very first thing that is going to impress you is the build quality. I’m not sure what will be the retails price of it but I presume it will be around $30.

The headset uses high-quality plastic, rubber, foam and other materials and the device does not look cheap at all.

The one and only thing that you can control is the distance between your eyes. I was disappointed that you cannot control the distance between the phone and your eyes. Also, you have to know that this is a passive headset, meaning that there are no control buttons.

I am not going to talk too much what you can do with any basic VR headset but you can check out the video of the Blitzwolf VR headset review for that.

In order to start using the VR headset, you have to slide your phone in and for this review I used the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge. There is some foam and rubber inside the sliding part and it kept my phone secure. Well, this review would have been completely different otherwise.

When it comes to any VR headset, one of the key aspects is comfort. Unfortunately, the OnePlus headset fails in this department.

I may sound a little subjective, or my nose has a weird shape, or my head has a weird shape… I don’t know… but the main issue is that there is no cushion on the nose part and it is really uncomfortable. You can partly solve this issue by sliding the headset up to your forehead but it may slide back.

OnePlus VR Headset Review: CONCLUSIONS

I can’t complain much about the OnePlus VR headset since I got it for free. In fact, I love a great build quality and a choice of materials. However, you cannot adjust the distance between the phone and your eyes.

Also, I didn’t find the headset to be comfortable to wear. I’m not sure for how much OnePlus is going to sell it but I have reviewed some other cheap options that may not have that great build quality of the OnePlus VR headset, but they are more comfortable to wear.
