Japan is turning to cutting-edge drone technology to protect its poultry farms from devastating bird flu outbreaks. In one of the most ambitious biosecurity moves in recent years, authorities have deployed laser-equipped drones to scare away virus-carrying wild birds before they can spread the disease.

A Serious Threat to Poultry Farms

Avian influenza is one of the biggest threats to the global poultry industry. A single outbreak can wipe out entire farms and lead to massive economic losses. Earlier this year, a major outbreak in Chiba Prefecture forced the culling of more than 3.3 million birds in just two months. Nationwide, around 4.6 million poultry were lost.

The main culprits are wild birds, especially crows, pigeons, and migratory waterfowl, that can carry the virus without showing symptoms. They spread it through droppings, saliva, or nasal fluids. Once the virus reaches domestic flocks, it can spread rapidly, forcing farms to take drastic measures like culling.

NTT Leads the Innovation

To prevent such disasters, Nippon Telegraph and Telephone (NTT) has developed a new drone-based solution. In collaboration with NTT e-Drone Technology, NTT East, and the Chiba Prefectural Government, the company has created an autonomous bird-repellent system using its BB102 drone model.

Unlike typical drones used for spraying or mapping, these drones patrol poultry farms day and night. They are equipped with red and green laser projectors that flash intermittently, an approach designed to make birds uncomfortable without harming them.

How the Laser Drones Work

The BB102 drone flies above poultry farms, scanning for wild birds. When birds are detected, it flashes multiple red and green laser beams to drive them away. These colors have been scientifically proven to deter animals, including pigeons, crows, and deer.

The flashing pattern plays a crucial role. Continuous light can lose its effect over time as birds adapt, but intermittent flashes prevent this. In short, the drones build an “aerial protective net,” keeping wild birds and the virus they may carry at a distance.

A Clean, Quiet, and Smart Solution

Unlike gas cannons or netting, the drone system is fully automated and silent. It works in all weather conditions and doesn’t rely on chemicals, making it an environmentally friendly alternative. This shift also reduces dependence on reactive measures like mass culling, helping farmers protect both their flocks and their livelihoods.

Backed by Science and Policy

Studies have linked bird flu outbreaks in Japan to migratory bird movements in late winter and spring. By scaring away potential carriers before they land, the drones address the problem at its source.

The program is supported by the Japanese government, which offers subsidies to encourage farmers to adopt this technology. It also fits into the country’s broader strategy of precision agriculture and AI-based farm management.

The Japanese government has also funded the research behind this. It aims to launch a small solar installation in space on the satellite would then transmit the energy down to Earth wirelessly. The idea of beaming down solar energy from space sounds like something from a Sci-Fi story. However, it will surpass many of the hurdles faced by conventional solar harvesting, like the weather and the general climate of a region.

At the moment, a trial run is planned in the future with a satellite that weighs around 180 kilograms. It will orbit the Earth from an altitude of 400 kilometres with solar panels measuring around 2 square meters. The harvested energy will then be transmitted as a GHz range electromagnetic wave that will be picked up by a ground station in Suwa, Japan. The accuracy is proving to be a bigger issue than the risks of harm. Energy being beamed down needs to hit a 40 kilometer wide receiver field at 28,000km/h. This could power many households despite only having a radiation density of the usual sunlight.

The spacecraft was aiming for a precision landing at the Shioli Crater edge

Launched in September 2023, SLIM’s main goal was a precision landing like no other – to hit a target within 100 meters on the lunar surface. This spot, at the edge of the Shioli crater, was not chosen at random. Scientists believe it might hold keys to understanding the Moon’s origins, possibly containing ancient matter from deep within the Moon’s mantle.

But space exploration is full of unexpected challenges. As SLIM descended towards its target, something went amiss. Although it managed to deploy two rovers, its solar cells, vital for powering the spacecraft, encountered an issue. This has left the SLIM lander with limited battery life – a few hours at most.

This situation puts pressure on the Japanese space agency, JAXA, to gather as much data as possible before the power runs out. There’s hope, though. The lander might revive after the lunar night, thanks to a change in sunlight angle recharging its batteries.

The advancement of charging systems in Japan is far behind Europe and the US

The focal point of METI’s plans is a mandate to increase the charging power of highway stations. The current standard, averaging at 40 kW, is anticipated to change to 90 kW by 2030. While these figures represent a significant bump, they surprisingly lag behind global expectations. Why? This conservative 40 kW average is the result of an aggressive installation of 50 kW CHAdeMO chargers during the early Nissan Leaf phase, which, despite their sheer numbers, provide sub-optimal charging durations due to their limited power.

However, the proposed 90 kW, though an improvement, seems inadequate for future EVs. While select high-traffic zones might witness 150 kW chargers, it is pretty low in comparison to Europe and the US, where it’s a whopping 250-350 kW, especially along interstates and other important highways.

METI’s holistic approach isn’t just confined to power increments. Plans also encompass denser charger placement, with one every 44 miles along highways, sweetened by the allure of subsidies for operators.

Transitioning from time-based to energy-specific pricing, METI plans to achieve a pay-per-kWh system, targeting an on-the-go payment model by possibly 2025. This could prove pivotal in attracting users by offering transparency and convenience.

METI’s actions undeniably align with the global electrification run. However, the metrics, especially regarding power, remind us to exercise caution rather than audacity. For Japan to fully embrace the EV revolution’s spirit, it might need to lay out its plans and the resources the country needs to achieve those high ambitions.

Japan’s new chip equipment export rules will take effect on July 30, 2023. The new regulation aims to provide controls that prevent advanced chip technology from reaching Beijing. Japan has been a long-term ally of the United States and the rules are in tandem with that of the US.

The new rules require export licenses for semiconductor manufacturing equipment. Twenty-three items have been added to the list. It includes the equipment required to produce circuit patterns (EUV lithography) and test chips. The tightening of export controls in the chip manufacturing industry makes it harder to export advanced chipmaking tools into China.

The move is seen in some quarters as a direct frontal assault against Beijing and a response is expected from China. Some industry experts have hinted that producing cutting-edge semiconductor devices will be more difficult for China in the short and medium term. The new rules are also the aftermath of the US direct call to Japan and the Netherlands for tightening restrictions on advanced semiconductor equipment. Japan and the Netherlands are two of the world’s biggest suppliers of semiconductor manufacturing equipment. The Netherlands has also formulated new restrictions that will kick in this September.

Currently, Japan accounts for up to a third of China’s semiconductor-manufacturing equipment imports. It is China’s leading source of such critical advanced equipment and the new rules expand suppliers’ reporting requirements. There are exemptions however that cover 42 countries and territories. Japanese suppliers may still enjoy a favorable market in China in low-end aspects of the chipmaking industry. China had scaled up its capacity in the production of legacy (older) chips following the US clampdown.

There could be a reciprocal response from Beijing that will hurt aspects of Japan’s growing trade with China. China continues to hit at US suppliers as reprisal for the US action and the Japanese move may also yield a strong response.

Taiwan’s Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp. and Japanese investment firm SBI Holdings Inc. have announced a collaboration to establish a foundry in Japan, catering to the rising demand for locally sourced chips. SBI will play a crucial role in raising funds for the joint venture, which aims to commence production with 40-nanometer and 55-nm automotive and industrial chips. The partnership also has plans to produce more advanced 28-nm chips in the medium to long term, according to SBI President Yoshitaka Kitao.

Specific details regarding the factory’s location and timeline are yet to be determined. However, the leading contract chipmaker globally, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., is simultaneously constructing a plant in southwest Japan that is expected to become operational as early as next year.

During a recent news conference, Masayuki Otani, the chief market analyst at Securities Japan, highlighted the importance of recovering the investment made in this venture. Following the announcement, shares in SBI rose by 2%, while Powerchip witnessed a 2.3% increase.

In a bid to revive its chip industry, financial firm SBI Holdings has decided to support Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing in establishing a factory in Japan. SBI will form a company to assist in planning, fundraising, lobbying for government subsidies, and finding a suitable location for semiconductor production.

This collaboration between SBI and Powerchip comes as Japan offers substantial subsidies amounting to billions of dollars to attract foreign chip companies. The goal is to encourage the establishment or expansion of chip production facilities, ensuring that Japanese automakers and technology firms have uninterrupted access to this critical component amid surging global demand.

The wheel of technology continues to spin in seemingly outrageous directions. Japan has mooted the idea of wooden satellites that will go into orbit as early as 2024. The team of researchers developing the first-ever wooden satellite is from Kyoto University in Japan. The project team has already obtained results from the International Space Station (ISS) which favors possible wooden satellites.

The findings of the research team indicated that wood can be sufficiently resilient in outer space. According to a press statement released by the team, outer space has an extreme environment with high-temperature changes and intense cosmic rays.

There are also dangerous solar particles that rapidly impact materials in such environments. Wood was exposed to such conditions for up to 10 months and tests confirmed no decomposition or deformations of the wood. The wood was free of cracking, warping, peeling, and surface damage.

The research is based on a preliminary investigation of the international partnership LignoSat. The Kyoto University-led partnership has designed a wooden satellite that will be jointly launched by NASA and the Japanese Space Agency. The LignoSat Space Wood Project kicked off in 2020. It was the culmination of the collaboration between Kyoto University and Sumitomo Forestry. It has been established that wood has the ability to withstand simulated low earth orbit (LEO) conditions.

A small panel containing thee different wood samples was launched into the ISS outside the Experimental Kibo module owned by Japan. The panel was exposed in space for 10 months after which it was retrieved by the Japanese Space Agency. The retrieval was carried out by Koichi Wakata and the sample was returned via SpaceX’s CRS-26 cargo Dragon spacecraft. The most durable wood among the sample was the wood from the Magnolia tree. It has a relatively high workability, dimensional stability, and overall strength. It is a credible alternative to alloy metal currently used for satellites.

Wood offers an environmentally-friendlier option and it is cheaper and cleaner to produce. Furthermore, wood can easily be disposed of than metal. The research holds much promise and we await the eventual commissioning of a wooden satellite into orbit next year.

The race to develop technology for transmitting solar power collected in space to Earth is gaining momentum, with various countries and organizations competing to unlock the potential of this innovative solution. Japan, in particular, is leading the charge, as a public-private partnership aims to conduct a trial by the year 2025.

The cost to generate space-based solar power, however, is still extremely high

The concept of space-based solar power was proposed by an American physicist in 1968 and involves launching solar panels into space to generate electricity at an altitude of 36,000 kilometers. The generated solar power is then converted into microwaves, similar to those used in microwave ovens, and transmitted to ground-based receiving stations, where it is converted back into electrical energy.

One of the advantages of space-based solar power is its ability to provide a stable supply of energy regardless of weather conditions. Microwaves can penetrate through clouds, ensuring a consistent flow of power throughout the day and in various weather conditions. On the other hand, regular solar power is highly dependant upon factors like cloud cover, which can be detrimental to the steady supply of energy.

Japan has been at the forefront of this research, with a group led by former Kyoto University President Hiroshi Matsumoto spearheading the efforts. In the 1980s, Japan achieved a significant milestone by successfully transmitting power via microwaves in space. The group continued its research under the guidance of Kyoto University professor Naoki Shinohara, and in 2009, an industry-government-academia project was launched under the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry.

The project achieved notable progress, including successful microwave power transmission experiments over distances of 50 meters in both horizontal and vertical directions. Looking to the future, the group plans to attempt vertical transmission over longer distances ranging from 1 km to 5 km.

Competitors from other countries are also actively pursuing the commercialization of space-based solar power technology. The U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory and the California Institute of Technology have embarked on large-scale projects, while Chongqing University in China and the European Space Agency are advancing their own technologies.

While the potential benefits of space-based solar power are immense, cost remains a significant challenge. To generate 1 gigawatt, equivalent to the output of a nuclear reactor, an extensive area of solar panels would be required. Even with technological advancements, the estimated cost of installing such capacity exceeds 1 trillion yen ($7.1 billion).

Nonetheless, as governments and businesses worldwide prioritize renewable energy and the reduction of carbon emissions, space-based solar power has gained renewed attention. The upcoming trial planned by the Japanese partnership in fiscal 2025 aims to demonstrate the feasibility of transmitting power from space to the ground, furthering the progress in this field.

According to reports from Bloomberg News and local media sources, the company intends to construct its second manufacturing plant in Kumamoto, with a potential investment reaching hundreds of billions of yen.

The Production is expected to begin in 2025

The primary objective behind this expansion is to accelerate Sony’s development in the competitive chip business sector and cater to the growing demand for Sony semiconductors in the global market. This move aligns with Sony Group’s previous considerations, as reported by IT Home in December last year, of building a new factory in Kumamoto Prefecture specifically for producing smartphone image sensors. The initial timeline proposed breaking ground in 2024, with production commencing as early as 2025.

Sony Semiconductor Solutions, a subsidiary of Sony Semiconductor, currently holds the top position in terms of revenue share, commanding 44% of the market. Following closely are Samsung System LSI and OMNIVISION. Together, Sony, Samsung, and OMNIVISION control almost 83% of the global smartphone image sensor market, according to IT Home.

Shimizu Terushi, president of Sony Semiconductor Solutions, acknowledged the prevailing semiconductor shortage and emphasized the significance of TSMC’s decision to establish a factory in Kumamoto. Terushi stated that this development has “increased confidence” in expanding procurement channels. Consequently, Sony’s acquisition of land in Kumamoto can be seen as a strategic measure to enhance its own production capacity and secure reserve space.

Samsung is apparently planning on setting up a new chip packaging test line in Japan. The move from the company is likely a way to deepen its cooperation in the region. The news arrives from five sources close to the matter.

The five people added that the South Korean tech giant is looking to boost its advanced packaging operation whilst building stronger connections with the semiconductor equipment and materials maker in Japan. Furthermore, it would also be the first such test line in the Asian country for Samsung, which is also the world’s largest memory chips manufacturer. This news also arrives as the United States seeks to work together with its allies to counter China’s advancements in semiconductor technology.

Back on Friday, Japan said that it would restrict exports of 23 types of chip making tools, which aligns its technology trade controls with the US’ effort to stop China from building advanced chips. The tech giant is also looking to establish the facility in the Kanagawa prefecture that is near Tokyo. Interestingly, this is also where Samsung has a research and development center.

Unfortunately, finer details regarding the matter like the timeline and investment are still unclear. Although, the total investment would likely be in tens of billions of yens or near 75 million US Dollars. The brand is looking to deepen its relations with the Japanese companies, while also looking at the region for its relatively low labor cost and presence of these chip equipment makers. Simply put, the region offers Samsung access to a local “ecosystem”, as per one of the sources.

Recent reports suggest that Japan is planning to restrict the export of Photoresists to China. This speculative news has led to an increase in the share price of many domestic companies in China that make photoresists. Investors are also rushing to buy companies that possess the technology, tools, and potential to manufacture photoresists, which are needed to make semiconductors. 

Last week, Jiangsu Nata Optoelectronic Material Co saw an increase of up to 34.31 yuan per share. The company specializes in photoresist technology and makes a particular type of photoresist used in semiconductors. Crystal Clear Electronic Material Co, which produces ultra-pure materials for major semiconductor firms like Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp, ChangXin Memory Technologies, and Hua Hong Semiconductor, saw an increase of 7.3% in its share price. Chemical manufacturers Shenzhen Rongda Photosensitive & Technology Co and Shenzhen Tongyi Industry Co gained almost 20% last week. These two companies specialize in making chemicals that are used in chip manufacturing processes.

What is Photoresist and why is it important?

A photoresist is a light-sensitive substance that is used in photolithography technology which is the standard method of printed circuit board (PCB) and microprocessor fabrication. Photoresists are made up of polymers, sensitizers, and solvents. It plays a vital role in manufacturing semiconductors. 

The global photoresist market is dominated by Japanese and American companies. Japan is almost a monopoly in this industry with just four Japanese companies the JSR, Tokyo Ohka Kogyo, Shin-Etsu Chemical, and Fujifilm Electronic Materials, having a combined 72.5% market share. Moreover, the high-resolution KrF/ArF semiconductor photoresists and the advanced EUV photoresist tech are available with Japanese companies only. 

If Japan stops the sale of Photoresists, then it will be difficult for China to manufacture advanced semiconductors. Though China has made huge progress in producing photoresists, it still relies on Japan for advanced technology.  Domestic producers can make photoresists for legacy nodes, but the high-end photoresists must be imported from Japan. 

According to Xuan Jiyou, a researcher at the Kandong Research institute, Even though China has progressed in this field and made breakthrough research in photoresist technology, it will take a long time for the country to produce high-end photoresists on a large scale.

The vehicle flew a pre-programmed route without a pilot at the controls, rising vertically to a height of 30 meters and then circling over the sea at a speed of 36 kilometers per hour for about three and a half minutes. 

Masc’s chairman, Kirino Hiroshi, stated that they aim to turn flying cars into a commercial proposition, and the Transport Ministry noted that this was the first test flight of a manned flying car in an open space in Japan that it is aware of. The future of flying cars is indeed promising, and the successful test flight in Japan is a significant step towards realizing this futuristic vision.

Flying car companies require more time and expertise before they can mass-produce flying vehicles. Design and engineering challenges are not the only problems that the manufacturers of flying cars need to solve. Environmental, regulatory, and safety clearances are also essential factors that need to be taken into account. Issues such as noise pollution, take-off and landing infrastructure, limited carrying capacity, training for new pilots, and high costs present significant obstacles to the widespread adoption of flying cars.

Japan’s Fair Trade Commission recently released a Market Study Report on Mobile OS and Mobile App Distribution, revealing that Google and Apple hold a significant monopoly in the markets for smartphones, mobile operating systems, app stores, and smartwatches, leaving little room for competitors. To address this issue, the regulator has proposed four sets of actions aimed at promoting a healthy and fair competitive environment in the mobile ecosystem.

The first set of actions focuses on preventing self-preferencing, while also ensuring equal access for third-party developers. The regulator suggests measures such as providing equal access to OS functions and advance warning of updates for all developers, not just those working for Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS. Additionally, the report calls for access to third-party payment services for app and in-app purchases.

The second set of reforms aims at improving the portability of user data between operating systems and promoting a healthy competitive environment in the mobile OS and app markets. The report also calls for allowing third-party app stores if they meet certain security and privacy standards, which could be welcome news for companies that have been critical of the rigorous app review process maintained by Apple.

The third recommendation focuses on fairness in making and enforcing rules, calling for greater transparency and advanced notice from Apple and Google when changing rules for developers. The final recommendation promotes competition related to the formation of new ecosystems.

Japan is not alone in its efforts to regulate app stores. Several other major economies, including South Korea, Australia, India, and the European Union, have taken similar steps or are signaling their intention to do so. Samsung has launched a new Galaxy A23 5G. This smartphone has been released exclusively in Japan. It comes with features designed for the Japanese market.

This is not the first time Japan is getting special treatment. Almost all brands, including Oppo and Xiaomi, sell specialized handsets in the country.

The gaming console market doesn’t have as many competitors as the smartphone market, with Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony mostly dominating the segment. And now, a new report suggests that the Switch is by far one of the most popular consoles in the Japanese market.

According to a HKET report, the Japanese game company and console maker sold a sizeable 495,000 units of its Switch models in Japan during the month of September 2022. This marked a significant 131 percent rise year on year. Furthermore, this is also marks the third consecutive month that Nintendo sold more than 300,000 units of its Switch console and marks the 55th consecutive months of dominating the Japanese game console.

To put things into perspective, the Sony PlayStation 5 series models saw a 17 percent fall in sales during the same period. The company only managed to see sales worth 64,000 units, and it appears, that the PS5 sales might have been affected by the recent price hikes. In Japan, Sony has raised the price of its PS5, with the optical drive version now costing 60,478 Yen while the digital version has a 49,478 Yen price tag.

On the other hand, both Nintendo and Microspft has stated that they have no plans on raising the prices of their own respective consoles. Interestingly, Switch sales in the third quarter of this year has risen by 36 percent year on year. Meanwhile, the Xbox Series X and Series X has also seen a massive 167 percent rise in sales year on year and even the PS5 saw an 18 percent overall rise year on year in the third quarter.

Japan is planning on setting up a domestic manufacturing base that will produce cutting edge 2nm process based chips. The country will also be working with the US to help realize these plans by the year 2025.

According to a NikkeiAsia report, Japan is gearing up to join the race in commercializing the next generation of advanced chipsets. Thus, Tokyo and Washington will be providing support to each other through a semiconductor technology partnership. Furthermore, this cooperation will also involve private companies from both countries as well, which will help in research on design and mass production as well. Notably, the TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company) is already on its way to developing mass production technology for its advanced 2nm process.

Meanwhile, Japan is seeking to secure a stable supply of semiconductors through domestic production of next gen chips. At the same time, the partnership with the US might also include the establishment of a new company or Japanese corporations may even set up a new manufacturing hub as well. As of right now, the nation’s Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry is offering subsidies to lower the cost of research and development into advanced semiconductors.

The joint research will begin this year, with a research and mass production center planned to be formed between 2025 and 2027. Notably, the world’s largest contract chipmaker, TSMC, is also setting up a chip fab in Japan’s Kumamoto Prefecture. However, this plant will not produce advanced chips and focus on chip technology ranging from 10nm to 20nm processes.

Sharp, the Foxconn-owned company known for making electronic products, has a smartphone lineup. Today, along with the Sharp Aquos R7 flagship smartphone, it also launched the Sharp Aquos Wish 2 budget smartphone.

Both smartphones have been launched in the Japanese market. As the name itself indicates, the Sharp Aquos Wish 2 is a successor to the Aquos Wish, which was launched in December last year.

The smartphone features a 5.7-inch HD+ display with a 1520 x 720 pixels screen resolution. There are also thick bezels around the screen, especially the bottom bezel.

Under the hood, the device is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 695 processor, coupled with 4GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 64GB of UFS 2.1 internal storage. There’s also support for expanding the storage capacity up to 1TB using a microSD card.

In the camera department, the phone has a 13-megapixel camera sensor on the back panel and an 8-megapixel snapper on the front side for taking selfies and video calling.

It runs the Android operating system out of the box with the company’s own custom user interface on top. The device is powered by a 3,730mAh battery and comes with support for PD 3.0 for fast charging.

The company has added that it has been considerate about environmental protection, and the Sharp Aquos Wish 2 smartphone is made using recycled materials. It says that 35 percent recycled plastic has been used for the shell.

The phone is rated to be waterproof and dustproof and is being offered in four color options — White, Gray, Blue, and Coral. It will be available for purchase in Japan from next month, but the pricing details remain unknown.

Taiwan has just given TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.) the green light for its plans to set up a new chip plant in Japan. The approval was given Taiwan’s Investment Commission earlier this week.

According to TaiwanNews, the Ministry of Economic Affairs’ Investment Commission stated that the Taiwanese chipmaker’s plans were approved since the firm’s semiconductor manufacturing capabilities is still at least a generation ahead of its Japanese counterparts. In other words, the world’s largest contract chipmaker does not face risks regarding its high end chip process technology being leaked to its rivals.

Notably, the new project has TSMC work together with Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation (SSS) in the form of a joint venture as Japan Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing (JASM). The chip site will be situated in the Kumamoto Prefecture and will manufacture the less advanced 22nm and 28nm process based chips that are used in microcontrollers and image sensors. Meaning, the chips being produced will have a wide variety of applications in industries like consumer electronics to even automobiles as well.

As of right now, the initial capital expenditure for the new facility is expected to be around 195 billion New Taiwan Dollars or roughly about 7 billion US Dollars. Furthermore, the project has also garnered strong support from the Japanese government, which is also seeking to strengthen its position in semiconductors at the moment. Out of the 7 billion US Dollars, TSMC is set to invest around 2.12 billion US Dollars, while SSS will invest around 500 million US Dollars in the joint venture. The construction of the site is planned to start next year and is expected to be completed sometime in 2024.

Earlier this week, TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company) has announced that it would be investing a sizeable amount of 7 billion US Dollars for its new chip plant that will be constructed in Japan.

The new chip plant is a major step for the world’s largest contract chipmaker who is shifting its advanced semiconductor production outside of its home country for the first time. Notably, the firm will be investing the large figure along with Sony, who has pledged to invest 500 million US Dollars into this factory as well. As per our previous report. this new chip plant will also be the one that supplies Sony with semiconductors that will be used for its reputed image sensor business.

According to Reuters, the construction of the new chip plant will begin next year, while the production is expected to start by the end of 2024. In a joint statement, Sony and TSMC stated that the “The fab is expected to directly create about 1,500 high tech professional jobs and to have a monthly production capacity of 45,000 12 inch wafers.” Furthermore, the site will also produce 22 nanometer and 28 nanometer chips to address the robust demand for specialty chip technologies.

The project also has great support from the Japanese government, although, whether this support included financial backing is currently unknown. However, we do know that Japanese industry ministry officials are considering this a success since they have sought to bring TSMC’s plant to the country. Amid the global shortage of semiconductors, unsteady supply chains, and even the trade disputes between US and China, the demand for key components for production still grows. So, Japan will likely benefit from this new chip plant.

Earlier this week, Sony confirmed that it was considering a plan to partner up with TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.) for a new chip plant that will be situated in Japan.

According to AsiaNikkei, the Japanese tech giant confirmed that it is considering joining hands with TSMC during a news conference that it held to showcase its earning for the first half of this year. In this conference, the company’s Chief Financial Officer stated that “The stable procurement of semiconductors is a crucial issue amid the chip crunch, and [TSMC’s plant] could be a solution.” As of right now, Sony outsources the production of most of its logic chips that are key components to its image sensors.

Furthermore, the company is also raising efforts in attracting more clients and improve the quality of its sensors to broaden their applications across multiple different product ranges. Totoki further added that the brand will hold discussions with TSMC and Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry for the partnership. This collaboration would bring together Sony’s expertise in Japanese chip operations to the world’s largest contract chipmaker that manufactures chips for giants like AMD, Nvidia, MediaTek, Qualcomm, and others.

While the CFO avoided directly commenting on the investment for this chip plant, he added that “It will be very meaningful for us to further strengthen and deepen our partnership with TSMC, which has the world’s most advanced semiconductor production technology.” For those unaware, TSMC has been planning to open its first advanced chip production site outside of its home country of Taiwan, and will be building a plant in Japan (western Japanese prefecture of Kumamoto to be particular). The construction will start sometime next year and productions are expected to begin in 2024.

TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company) revealed its plans of building its first chip plant in Japan earlier today (14th October 2021). The news arrives as Japan seeks to strengthen its supply chain amid an ongoing global semiconductor shortage.

According to a NikkeiAsia report, the world’s largest contract chipmaker’s CEO C.C. Wei told investors that the firm has received support from both its customers and the Japanese government for this investment. Wei added that the plant will focus on the 22 nanometer and 28 nanometer process technology that can be used across many chip types, ranging from image sensors to even microcontrollers. The construction of the new chip site is planned to start next year, with production scheduled to begin in 2024.

The senior official has yet to disclose the exact size of the investment. Although, the company did share its financial report on the same day, which revealed its net profits for the period between July and September 2021. During this time, the firm saw a near 14 percent rise in net profits as it ramped up the production of processors for the new Apple iPhone 13 series. Furthermore, TSMC’s gross margin was 51.3 percent while its operating margin came in at 41.2 percent.

Notably, TSMC’s shift to Japan marks a major move considering the company had retained its decades long strategy of having its production based in Taiwan. Similar to Japan, the company is also constructing an advanced chip plant in the US as well, in the state of Arizona. Interestingly, a plan for a German site is also being considered as of right now.

Huawei Technologies is apparently seeking to lead the next generation of telecommunications technology. The company aims on becoming a pioneer in 6G networking as the US and Japan also invest heavily towards the next networking standards.

According to a NikkeiAsia report, the Chinese tech giant’s plans to develop 6G also arrives as US and Japan also push ahead with the next gen telecom tech. Furthermore, the company’s CEO and Founder, Ren Zhengfei has asked his employees to “break limits in the sky” and set global standards in the industry. The statement was made when he was speaking to a gathering of the company’s scientists, researchers, and interns last month. As per an internal company document, the senior official said that the brand will continue to develop 5G and AI (Artificial Intelligence) businesses while also moving forward in next generation technology.

Although, the biggest hurdle to its plans is likely the US, which has imposed various sanctions in the past that had essentially crippled its once notable smartphone business. The founder acknowledged the effects of these US trade restrictions but added that “Our research into 6G is preparation against a rainy day, and we aim to seize the ground of 6G patents. We must not wait until 6G becomes viable, as waiting would impose constraints on us due to a lack of patents.”

As of right now, Huawei already holds the largest number of standard essential patents for 5G technology. And now, China is also moving towards 6G technologies, which is one of its key research areas. Meanwhile, the US and Japan are also racing to develop 6G network to better compete against China. At the moment, 6G is still in its very early phases but promises a sizeable number of applications in the future, including opportunities in space research and earth sciences.

Japan Airlines is apparently seeking to diversify its operations and enter into the flying car business in the near future. The company aims to launch its own flying car service in the fiscal year 2025.

According to a NikkeiAsia report, Japan Airlines will start a passenger transportation service that connects commuters to airports and other tourist attractions in the Mie Prefecture and other regions as well. JAL aims to develop the business as a service similar to taxis, which will carry travelers to various locations across the country. Notably, the news arrives amid the automobile industry seeing an increasing focus and competition in the flying car business across the globe.

To launch this service, JAL would also be required to take meet the required safety regulations in Japan. The reports adds that the company will use the aircraft built by Volocopter, which is a German startup that it had invested in back in 2020. This vehicle is a two seater drone type aircraft called eVTOL (stands for electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft), which offers a cruising range of 35 kilometers and can fly at up to 110 km per hour as well.

At the moment, JAL has signed a cooperation agreement with Mie Prefecture to begin trials for the commercialization of this service. The trials conducted include short distance flights of around 20 kilometers, after which, it will move towards mdeium to long distance travels that are between 50 to 150 kilometers. This service is set to begin commercial operations in the fiscal year 2025 and is expected to connect tourist destinations from the prefecture’s main airport in the beginning.

TSMC is apparently planning on entering into joint ventures with certain Japanese companies, including Sony, Toyota, and Mitsubishi. The news arrives after a recent report surfaced that stated that the firm is planning on building a chip production plant in Japan.

According to a UDN report, the world’s largest contract chipmaker is rumored to be in talks to cooperate with Japanese tech giant Sony along with local automobile makers Toyota and Mitsubishi Electric as well. While the company has declined to comment on the matter as of right now, the report added that the firm is expected to focus on setting up a materials research and development center in Japan that could be completed within this year.

Taiwan’s media also reported that TSMC will be establishing joint ventures with Sony, Toyota, and Mitsubishi to build a factory in Japan. These joint ventures will apparently involve investments of up to 1.6 trillion Yen (roughly about 14.4 billion US Dollars). In our previous report, we had said that the chipmaker will be building its new production site in the Kumamoto Prefecture, which is also close to one of Sony’s plants. Furthermore, TSMC has stated that it is setting up a materials research and development center in Japan to expand the research of three dimensional chip materials. According to a NikkeiAsia report, the world’s largest contract chipmaker, who is also a key supplier for the Japanese tech giant Sony, is currently considering building a plant in the Kumamoto Prefecture. At the moment, the firm is evaluating the plan to build a site in western Japan, as per sources close to the matter. Notably, the location of the site would also make the plants close to one of Sony’s plants.

In other words, the latter might receive help from the former to meet the high demand for image sensors, automotive microcontrollers, and other chips as well. One of the sources stated that “TSMC is considering a proposal by the Japanese government to build an advanced chip factory in Japan, though it has not yet fully committed and finalized.” Notably, the plant would TSMC’s first chipmaking site in Japan, with companies from the region accounting for 4.7 percent of its revenue in 2020.

Japanese government wants Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd (TSMC), the world’s leading chip manufacturer, and Sony Group to build the country’s first 20-nanomemter chip plant.

The development, which was first reported by Nikkan Kogyo newspaper, indicates that the investment for building the 20nm chip plant in Japan would be around 1 trillion yen, which roughly converts to $9.2 billion.

If the companies agree to do this, then the factory would be built close to Sony’s image sensor plant in Southwest Japan. The details ceom from a proposal floated by Japan’s trade and industry ministry, says the report.

Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida said that “stable chip supplies are important for Japan to maintain its international competitiveness” but has not commented on this development of building a 20nm chip plant. A ministry spokesman said to Reuters that the report was not true but declined to elaborate.

Simlar to the United States, Japan is also looking for wats to boost semiconductor production in the country to ensure that its companies have easier access to critical components for making devices.

The issues come after the trade war between the United States and China, which resulted in concerns about majority of the chip production in the world is located in Taiwan. The global shortage of chips is also one of the contributing factors for expansion of facilities to other regions to ensure steady flow of critical components.

Apple launched the iPhone 12 series smartphones last year and this time, all the models in the lineup come with support for 5G connectivity. Thanks to this, people are upgrading their devices, resulting in an increase in shipments for 5G phones.

Now, a new report reveals that Apple was the market leader in 5G phones in Japan last year, accounting for almost half of the total shipments. The remaining spots for the top five vendors were filled by Samsung and three other Japanese brands.

Japan recorded a massive 40-fold increase in the 5G shipments in 2020 and is expected to continue the trend this year as well. A report from MM Research Institute, a Japanese ICT market research and consulting organization, claims that the domestic smartphone shipments in Japan increased by 16.9% annually to 32.757 million.

The numbers set a record high shipments as it has exceeded the 32.58 million shipments in the year 2017. This is mainly due to the iPhone 12 series models reaching 11.011 million units, indicating a 40-fold increase (3,993%) from the 269,000 units in 2019.

The company’s share of total shipments also jumped from 1 percent in 2019 to 33.6 percent in 2020. Apple is now leading the Japanese smartphone market, followed by Sharp, Samsung, Fujitsu, and Sony. The US-based tech giant is likely to launch a new Purple-colored iPhone to boost its sales.

Last year, Sony had launched the Reon Pocket wearable air conditioner through crowdfunding and now the Japan-based company has launched a successor of the same, dubbed Sony Reon Pocket 2.

The newly launched product looks similar to its predecessor in terms of design but comes with improved internals. Thanks to the improvements, the company claims that it can offer twice the level of heat absorption, resulting in more powerful cooling.

Sony is also saying that the company has improved the sweat-proofing in the Reon Pocket 2, making it more suitable for light exercise situations. It’s noteworthy that the device is not completely dust and waterproof.

The original model launched last year used silicon but this time, the company has upgraded to SUS316L stainless steel for the temperature cooling surface. This should offer more strength and transfer cooler temperatures more easily to the skin. It also comes with four temperature levels that users can adjust to.

This time, the company has partnered with sportswear brands like Le Coq Sportif, Munsingwear, and Descente to produce a range of golf clothing that features pockets for the wearable device to slot into. For using this device with regular clothes, the company has also designed a neckstrap accessory.

The Sony Reon Pocket 2 measures 54 mm x 20 mm by 116 mm (WHD). It weighs 92 grams, which is just slightly more than the original model’s weight of 89 grams. It is now available for purchase in Japan for 14,850 yen, which is approximately $138. Currently, there’s no information about its availability in other regions.

Sony launched the Xperia 10 III along with Xperia 1 III and 10 III a few days ago. Now, it has revealed a Yellow color variant of the Xperia 10 III in Japan.

Sony has partnered with NTT Docomo Mobile network operator in Japan to announce the new color variant of the Xperia 10 III. This edition is said to be exclusive for Japan and above all, the website listing shows that it’s a color limited only for Docomo carrier users.

Originally, the Xperia 10 III launched in four color options- White, Black, Pink, and Blue. This Yellow color marks the fifth color variant of the mid-range 5G device. Just like the other models, the power button of the Yellow color variant is in a different shade(here, Blue) for identification.

Apart from this, the rest of the device looks the same. As for the specs, the Xperia 10 III marks the entry of 5G connectivity to the mid-range Xperia devices.

Japan is reputed as the country with the highest number of functional vending machines per capita in the world. The country is looking at an effective way of putting its estimated 4.1 million vending machines into the fight against the coronavirus pandemic by selling rapid test kits via the machines.

The move is expected to scale up testing beyond the 40,000 polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests that are being carried out daily across the country. It is also aimed at conserving critical public healthcare manpower that should be deployed to other areas for a more targeted battle against the pandemic.

The citizens had been at the mercy of private healthcare providers as the only alternative for testing before the deployment of the vending machine model. Therefore, vending machines configured to sell test kits are an effective way of avoiding the crowding at public and private healthcare facilities and waiting to be attended to. This was the view of Hideki Takemura, director of the Laketown Takenoko Ear Nose and Throat Clinic which has already deployed seven vending machines in parts of the capital, Tokyo.

According to Takemura, the country was carrying out a very low number of PCR tests which made it difficult to have a true picture of the extent of the pandemic in the country and even affected the recovery effort.

The vending machine model was a huge success at the early stages as the machines had high patronage, and in some cases, had to be emptied of cash and restocked due to the inflow of citizens who needed to be tested. While the vending machines are still popular, there had been a lull in their demand as the country continues to battle another wave of the pandemic.

The process of testing begins when a person purchases the test kit from the machine at about $40, which will then be used to collect the person’s saliva sample and then mailed to the laboratory for analysis.

In a Tweet, Twitter confirmed that From Today i.e., February 17, it will start rolling out the feature in a phased manner. That means it could while to reach everyone as the company completes the testing. Anyway, once received, you can just select a chat in DM(Direct Message) and start recording your voice.

Inside the chat, you will see a ‘Voice Icon’ at the bottom next to the Text Editor section. Clicking on it will start recording your voice. As shown in the teaser below, Twitter is giving just 140 seconds for the Voice message as the limit.

If you recall, Twitter started testing its ‘Spaces’ in India a few days ago. The Beta Testing will include as many as 3,000 more people including India. This is a clubhouse-like alternative voice chat room that is likely to roll out for everyone later this year.

Coming back, after recording it, press the Stop button to save the Audio. This Audio clip will now appear below with a ‘Send’ button to the right and a ‘cancel’ button to the left. You can do press the either to send/discard the voice message respectively.

The companies include those that the government has recognized as processing sensitive technology linked to security. The move also aims at mitigating security risks associated with the on-going US-China trade war.

The report reveals that in a survey conducted, 42 companies out of 96 that responded have diversified or are considering diversifying their supply chains by moving to India and Southeast Asian countries.

Additionally, three companies said that they will have to downsize operations or withdraw from China. Eight companies have said that they are thinking about what to do. 26 companies said that they placed restrictions on joint research with partners that could leak technology while six companies have not taken any action.

The report adds that the businesses started taking such action after it was found that many multinational companies made deals with Chinese factories that have been suspected of imposing forced labor on Uyghurs and other ethnic minorities in China.
