With a thrust of 2,678 tons, it will be capable of launching spacecraft weighing at least 27 tons towards the Moon.

China’s plan for its first crewed lunar landing involves two Long March 10 launches from the Wenchang Space Launch Center. The first launch will carry the lunar landing module, while the second will deliver the crewed spacecraft. Once in lunar orbit, the two vehicles will dock, allowing astronauts to board the landing module for their descent to the lunar surface. After completing their mission, the astronauts will return to the lunar orbiter via the landing module and ultimately back to Earth.

China Mobile’s experiment extended beyond basic performance verification. By employing a single-wavelength 800Gbps wide-spectrum optical transmission system, they successfully conducted a 20km single-core fiber bidirectional 128Tb/s ultra-large capacity transmission test. This achievement demonstrates the feasibility of deploying anti-resonant hollow-core fiber in complex network environments.

Another key aspect of the test involved constructing the first hybrid optical cable using both anti-resonant hollow-core and solid-core fibers. This cable successfully met basic mechanical property standards for stretching, flattening, bending, impact, and torsion.

The experiment faced an unexpected challenge – Typhoon Malis struck Shenzhen and Dongguan during the laying phase. Despite these harsh weather conditions, China Mobile, alongside domestic industry partners, conducted the first-ever test of anti-resonant hollow-core fiber cable technology in a complex pipeline network environment. This resulted in the completion of a hollow-core optical cable for a typical financial dedicated line route within the Greater Bay Area, offering a potential 30% reduction in optical link transmission delay.

While the test results are promising, China Mobile acknowledges the need for further advancements. Nonetheless, their success in decomposing biodegradable plastics, such as polyester-polyurethane (PUR), and commercially available mixtures of polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT) and polylactic acid (PLA), offers significant hope for a more sustainable future.

the researchers believe that these microbes’ ability to break down plastics may have been influenced by their natural adaptation to break down cutin, a protective layer found in plants that shares similarities with plastic polymers. This fortuitous connection between the microorganisms and the plant polymer cutin has paved the way for their enzymes to target plastic polymers, providing a starting point for further exploration and innovation in plastic waste management.

Although this discovery is merely the tip of the iceberg, it signifies a significant milestone in our quest to combat plastic pollution. The Jellyfish moves with the help of Electrodes

The artificial muscle is a bag of oil surrounded by electrodes. When the electrodes are energized, they discharge into the surrounding seawater, which pushes the oil in the oil pockets back and forth, causing the robotic jellyfish to create a flapping motion. This movement generates currents around the jellyfish, sucking up small particles from the seabed, which can be used to remove debris from fragile marine environments such as coral reefs.

What’s more exciting is that the robot jellyfish mimics the movement of real jellyfish in nature, which flap to catch food and obtain nutrients. Unlike other methods that can harm marine organisms, the robotic jellyfish has almost no noise, coupled with its non-contact method, which ensures no negative impact on the marine environment and organisms. It can also collect some fragile biological samples, such as fish eggs. The robot jellyfish can also perform a grasping motion when two actuators approach each other in a pincer-like gesture. With this ability, two robots can work together to pick up more complex items, such as face masks, from the ocean floor.

The only limitation of the current robot jellyfish is that it needs to be connected to a wire for power supply. But scientists are working on solving this problem, and they have installed batteries and wireless communication devices on a sample and let it swim freely in a pond on the Max Planck campus in Stuttgart. In the next step, they plan to add the function to change direction.

He further added that this arrives as the Chinese smartphone maker is entering its second stage of growth. Earlier this week, Tianma Microelectronics announced at the Wuhan Tianma G6 Industrial Base, that it has signed a new partnership deal with Xiaomi Corp. With this new agreement, both companies will seek to study and develop new display technologies through a new joint laboratory.

This new facility will feature independent labs, which will rely on the Chinese tech giant’s vast resources in consumer electronic products and Tianma’s innovative platform for the next generation of display technology (Via PanDaily). Some of the objectives of the joint laboratory includes research and development into new display technology, along with study and verification of equipment and materials related to these new technologies.

Furthermore, the new lab will also work directly with upstream and downstream of the industrial chain to improve its R&D capabilities. The goal is to develop new slim, lightweight, portable, and energy efficient display panel technology and to commercialize the mass production of this as well. Cheng Wei, Executive Vice President of Tianma Microelectronics, stated that the new joint lab enables the company to gain access to the industry chain ranging from the market, to terminals, and even parts manufacturers as well.

In other words, it will accelerate the development cycle of new display panels and bring new technologies into the market faster. For those unaware, the smartphone maker and Tianma Microelectronics maintain a close relationship with one another, with the latter supply the displays used in a number of the former’s smartphones and smart wearable products as well. Earlier this week, Xiaomi had shared its latest financial report. This revealed that the company’s research and development department currently employs 13,919 members, with more than 500 of these members working on the company’s car project.

According to a new report, the near 14,000 member strong research and development department accounts for around 44 percent of the company’s total number of employees. Previously, we had also reported on the Chinese tech giant had officially registered its first automobile unit, with Lei Jun (Founder and CEO of the brand) leading the division with over 300 employees. The newly established smart electric vehicle business is also wholly owned by the company, while a second automobile unit was also established just a couple of days prior.

Furthermore, the financial report also reveled that the company’s EV business is progressing smoothly and that the first mass produced car will be launched in the first half of 2024. This is in line with our previous report from back in October. To further supplement its future plans of launching fully self driving cars, the brand had even acquired an autonomous driving based startup called Deepmotion in August 2021. With the world facing a shortage of semiconductors amid a booming demand for chips, MediaTek is apparently seeking to invest over 100 billion New Taiwan Dollars (roughly 3.5 billion US Dollars) in research and development this year.

The move from the chip making giant arrives to improve the competitiveness for the coming years in the consumer technology and semiconductor industries. The company stated that it had invested about 77 billion New Taiwan Dollars (roughly 2.75 billion US Dollars) back in 2020 on research and development, and it is planning to cross the 100 billion mark this year. This would also marked the highest investment from the company so far.

Furthermore, this is also indicative of the company’s growing investment each year into R&D, as it had previously raised its spending by 22.6 percent back in 2020 over 2019. As per an ITHome report, the hike in investment figures also arrives as a majority of the R&D expenses are related to remuneration of personnel related to research and development.

Notably, MediaTek had also achieved a milestone last year, with its revenue crossing the 10 billion US Dollar mark for the first time back in 2020. This is now followed by the company recently announcing that it will be raising its production capacity in an attempt to further grow its revenue, with a targeted rise of 40 percent year on year in 2021.

Apple has recently announced that it has plans to raise its investment in Germany. The company seeks to increase its corporate spendings in the region, and invest 1.2 billion US Dollars in its silicon design center that is situated in the country.

According to a TechCrunch report, the Cupertino based giant announced that it would set up a new facility in Munich in the nation. This site will be called the European Silicon Design Center, which will have a focus on 5G and also explore future wireless related technologies. The company also added that Munich is also its largest engineering hub in Europe, with over 1,500 engineers working there at the moment. Notably, Apple has even put together a particular team that will be working on power management chips.

In other words, about half of all engineers of the company that are working on power management are currently in Germany. Furthermore, the team in Germany is also expanding into chip design technologies beyond power management. The company is planning on investing 1.2 billion US Dollars over the next three years on a new building and its related research and development investments.

Notably, the smartphone maker is also working with Qualcomm for the 5G modems used in the iPhone 12 lineup. China is planning on increasing its investment into its annual research and development by 7 percent every year, over the course of a five year period. The government made the announcement last week, in its report from the Fourth Session of the 13th Nationa People’s Congress.

According to a Reuters report, the Chinese government will be increasing its spending on basic research by 10.6 percent this year alone. The surge in investment also showcases the nation’s commitment to further advance its tech sector, which arrives due to the various clashes between China and the US, and other nations as well, over technology policies. The local government also highlighted that it will focus on seven ey segments in its five year plan.

These areas include, ‘next-generation artificial intelligence, quantum information, brain science, semiconductors, genetic research and biotechnology, clinical medicine and health, and deep space, deep sea, and polar exploration.’ Furthermore, it further added that it would also seek to establish more national laboratories to research quantum information and artificial intelligence as well. Additionally, the government will be encouraging companies to open up data in areas ranging from search, e-commerce, along with social media as well, to support third party data services.

It would also focus on improving its channels for domestic companies going public. On the other hand, the government would be supporting foreign funded companies to set up their own research and development centers in China as well. A few other areas it seeks to expand on are the electric vehicle sector and 5G networking. The nation is aiming to achieve 56 percent 5G penetration within the next five years.

Earlier this week, Lei Jun, the Founder of Xiaomi Corp, stated that the company has invested over 10 billion yuan (roughly 1.55 billion US Dollars) on research and development last year. The senior official also said that the brand is now planning on raising the investment by 30 to 40 percent for this year.

According to an ITHome report, the Founder made the statement after being asked about the investment the Chinese tech giant plans on making for research and development this year. Lei Jun said that the company will continue to maintain its high investment into technology research and development for this year. Furthermore, Xiaomi will be further raising the investment by up to 30 to 40 percent in 2021.

This would have investment reach somewhere between 13 billion to 14 billion Yuan (roughly over 2 billion Yuan). Additionally, Lei Jun also added that the company will also be focusing on recruiting engineers this year. As per the official statement, Xiaomi will be hiring around 5,000 employees in 2021. The senior executive was also asked by the Mi MIX 4 as well. However, the he refrained from providing any details regarding the device.

Although, Lei Jun state that the device is currently in the works and is one of the tasks being handled by its research and center department. Qualcomm has just announced that it is planning on building a new research and development center to push 5G innovations. This center will be situated in France and arrives after the company met with the local government’s officials.

As per an official Qualcomm announcement, Cristiano Amon, CEO elect and President of the company met with Agnès Pannier-Runacher, minister delegate for the industry in the French Government. This new research and development site will be a part of the company’s extensive R&D network and will also play an integral role by bringing in employees from the region to help develop 5G technology for the various markets across the globe.

The new 5G research and development facility also builds on “Qualcomm Communications SARL’s strong presence in France.” For those unaware, the chipmaking giant already has established facilities in the region for over 20 years. The new center is located in Lannion in Brittany and Issy-Les–Moulineaux in the Paris-Region. For those unaware, Lannion is a center for telecoms engineering excellence and a European technology hub.

John Smee, Vice President of Engineering in Qualcomm stated that “France already has a leading technical engineering infrastructure in place, so it is a natural fit for this new 5G R&D hub. The 5G R&D team will be working on advanced systems engineering to help define the future of 5G and beyond – and the new center is a tremendous opportunity for the individuals involved and for the company.”

Earlier this week, a new report had surfaced that stated that OnePlus and OPPO have merged their respective research and development departments into one. Both brands have now merged their R&D but will still offer unique features and software.

As per a new report, an insider source from OPPO had told DoNews (Via ITHome) that the research and development departments for both Chinese smartphone makers have now been merged. Reportedly, both companies had made this as early as December 2020. In other words, either companies’ R&D is no longer separate, although, both OEMs would still offer unique software and features and the merger is not mirrored at the product level.

TSMC has apparently made another major breakthrough in its research and development process. This time the world’s largest contract chipmaker has made strides in the development of its 2nm architecture that will be seen in processors in the near future.

According to a PatentlyApple report, sources from its supply chain have revealed that the upcoming 2nm process will adopt a new multi-bridge channel field-effect transistor (MBCFET) architecture unlike the fin-type field-effect transistor (FinFET) architecture used in the 3nm and 5nm processes. This development also marks TSMC making another progress far ahead of its competition at the moment, like Samsung.

A TSMC official also stated to a publication that “We are optimistic that the yield rate of risk trial production in the second half of 2023 will reach 90%, which will help us continue to win large orders from major manufacturers such as Apple and Huida in the future.” Furthermore, the company plans on reaching mass production capabilities sometime in 2024.

Huawei has brought in is research and development team from Russia to join in the development of the company’s proprietary operating system, dubbed HarmonyOS (or HongMengOS in China).

According to a GlobalTimes report, the Chinese tech giant’s Russian R&D team has around 1,500 staff in cities including Moscow, St. Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod, and Novosibirsk. This Russian team has been in close contact with Huawei’s development partners to help the research product be “more compatible with Huawei’s mobile ecosystem.” Earlier this month, the company had announced HarmonyOS 2.0, with its beta arriving in December 2020 and smartphone roll out sometime in 2021.

Xiaomi-backed Roborock, which is known for making smart cleaning robots, has announced that it has completed the Research & Development work for its commercial cleaning robot and now it is in the testing phase.

The commercial shipping robots from the company mainly target shopping malls, large supermarkets, office buildings, airports, and other large indoor spaces. The company expects the demand for commercial sweeping robots to rise with increasing labor costs.

As per the report, it seems that the company will be making the commercial devices on a pre-order basis and Roborock has two primary OEMs carry this out — Xinwangda and Dongguan Great Wall.

Roborock has also made a few customized sweeping robots for Xiaomi, including the Mijia Sweeping Robot 1S. It is the first Xiaomi ecological chain company to get listed on the Science and Technology Innovation Board.

Samsung is apparently raising its efforts into research and development for its semiconductor business to pursue its vision of new K-Chip technology. The South Korean tech giant has already planned academic partnerships and collaborations across its home country.

Scientists have developed a new form of bandage which is capable of diagnosing bacterial infections by changing color. It also administers early medication that can potentially help combat antibiotic resistance in cases of infection and save thousands of lives.

The new ‘smart’ bandage can detect which bacteria are present in the body and releases early medication to prevent further symptoms. According to researchers in China, this development could lead to the ‘rational use’ of antibiotics. To elaborate on this, antibiotics are generally prescribed as a precaution until an infection is cured. However, this leads to bacteria becoming immune or resistant to certain antibiotics, which in turn makes it hard to cure an ailing patient.

Thus, the smaller dosage at an appropriate time frame can reduce needless overdose of antibiotics and make the phenomenon less frequent, as drugs nowadays are accelerating the process of immunity for bacterias. Currently, 700,000 deaths worldwide have been attributed to antibiotic resistance, making it one of the largest threats to global health, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

Hence, tools like the new bandage which reduces the need for precaution and helps in the early determination of the infection may lead to more lives being saved in the future. Early testing of the bandage was done of mice that were infected with either drug-sensitive or drug-resistant Escherichia coli (E.coli) bacteria. The researchers then administered a material that can assess microenvironments, i.e, detect the bacteria on their wounds.

If the tests were on the drug sensitive E.coli, then the bandage turned green to yellow and released an antibiotic that killed the bacteria. On the other hand, if the drug-resistant bacteria were tested, the bandage turned red after coming into contact with an enzyme specifically produced by the drug resistant Escherichia coli. After this, the researchers exposed the bandages to light to release a chemical that weakened the bacteria to make them more vulnerable to medicine.

Timing is key when sensing and treating the bacterial infection, as a quick diagnosis can speed patient’s recovery and reduce the risk of spreading antibiotic resistant microbes. Notably, the new bandage is supposedly a low cost alternative to traditional methods of diagnosing and can rival even the more expensive and time consuming instruments used today.

Charles Lieber, the head of Harvard’s Chemistry Department, has been arrested after the was found to have lied to the authorities regarding his involvement with China’s program to recruit foreign researchers.

The investigation against Lieber has uncovered an affidavit that contained his contract with the program, Thousand Talents, which offered him a monthly salary of $50,000 and annual living expenses of more than $150,000 over the course of three years. Furthermore, he had also been offered upwards of $1.5 million by the Chinese GOvernment and the Wuhan University of Technology (WUT) to conduct research at the university and setting up a lab.

Charles Leiber is a prominent figure in the scientific community and is one of the biggest names that the US authorities have ever arrested for stealing research for foreign nations. Till date, most cases of arrests have generally been in cases against scientist that are collaborating with China. Now, China’s Thousand Talents program which aims to acquire leading scientists that “can enhance China’s high-tech industries and emerging disciplines” has recently come under US authorities attention.

Leiber is also a renowned professor at Harvard and a leader in nanoscience and nanotechnology related research. Allegedly, he signed an agreement with WUT to conduct research and development of nano-wired lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles. This agreement was taken on Harvard University’s behalf which is out of Lieber’s authority. In other words, he undertook a deal in Harvard’s name and worked for a Chinese organization.

The affidavit also claims that Lieber misrepresented his work to Harvard and had lied to the Department of Defense and National Institutes of Health, which also fund Lieber’s research group at Harvard. This funding requires full disclosure regarding foreign collaborations that Lieber did not follow through on. Currently, Lieber is under paid administrative leave but is not allowed on campus grounds, for now.

“The charges brought by the U.S. government against Professor Lieber are extremely serious. Harvard is cooperating with federal authorities, including the National Institutes of Health, and is conducting its own review of the alleged misconduct,” according to a statement by Harvard. The implications of Lieber’s actions are severe as the tensions between the US and China are at an all-time high. The investigation is still underway to root out more violations and acts of misconduct.

OPPO is known for its focus on research and it has decided to take it a level higher by establishing a research and development institute with branches across the globe.

A report from Chinese media iFeng.com, says the headquarters of the OPPO Research Institute will be based in Shenzhen with branches in Beijing, Shanghai, Dongguan, Yokohama (Japan), and Silicon Valley (US). The institute will focus on three things – software, hardware, and standards. It will also conduct research on 5G, AI, image processing, and the use of new materials.

There was an official opening ceremony of the institute on March 29. In attendance, were the CEO Chen Mingyong, and senior vice president Zeng Yuanqing. It was also announced that the dean of the institute will be Mr. Liu Chang.
