Nothing Phone (2) Launched with a Familiar Design, Improved Cameras, Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC

After months of teases, Nothing has announced the debut of its second smartphone—Nothing Phone (2). The new device is a considerable update over last year’s Phone (1), bringing a new and powerful Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chip under the hood. You get essentially the same design as the original model with notable changes in the Glyph interface. The Carl Pei-led startup has improved the cameras of its newest phone and has upped the price as well. Read on to learn more.

Design and Display

As mentioned, Nothing Phone (2) will look a lot like the Phone (1). You get a transparent back with an LED lights interface. However, there are also slight changes when you compare it to the older phone. For one, the selfie camera cutout on the display moves from the left side to the center. The Glyph interface on the device has also been reconfigured and it can now do a lot cooler tricks. The smartphone gets a 6.7-inch LTPO AMOLED display that offers a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate, a 1080 x 2412 resolution, and 1600 nits peak brightness.

Specifications

Nothing Phone (2) gets a significant hardware boost as compared to the original model. Replacing the older Snapdragon 778G+, the company has packed the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC on the device. This 4nm processor offers solid performance and balanced thermals. The device gets LPDDR5 RAM and USF 3.1 storage.

The rear camera department now features a 50MP Sony IMX890 main camera sensor with optical image stabilization (OIS) and in-sensor zoom. This is the same primary sensor as the OnePlus 11. There’s also a 50MP ultrawide cam that uses the same Samsung JN1 sensor. For clicking selfies, you get a 32MP Sony IMX615 front-facing camera with electronic image stabilization (EIS).

Nothing Phone 2 white

The device packs a 4,700mAh battery, which supports the same 33W wired and 15W wireless charging. On the software front, the device runs Nothing OS 2.0 based on Android 13. The new software brings new widgets, theme colors, folder layouts, and illustrated covers.

Pricing and Availability

Nothing Phone (2) is now available for pre-order. The phone will be offered in white and dark grey colors, and will start at $599 for the 8GB RAM + 128GB storage model. There is also a 12GB RAM + 256GB storage model available for $699, and a 12GB RAM + 512GB storage model for $799. Open sales will begin on July 17.

Samsung to improve low-light camera performance in upcoming Galaxy S22 update

Samsung Galaxy S22 series users have voiced concerns about the performance of the primary rear camera in low-light conditions, particularly when capturing neon signs or other light sources. In response to these complaints, Samsung acknowledged the issue in March and assured users that a software update was in the works to address the problem. Initially slated for an April release, the update was delayed but is now expected to be included in the upcoming software update.

Galaxy S22 series

Software Update in the Works

Samsung recently confirmed that the development of the software patch is complete and it will be rolled out as part of an upcoming software update. As the July 2023 security patch has already been released for the Galaxy S22 series, users anticipate that the fix for blown-out neon signs will likely arrive in the August 2023 security update.

Samsung Galaxy S22 low light camera update in the works

The announcement was made on the Samsung Community Forum for Korea, where a moderator responded to a user’s inquiry about the update’s status. The moderator stated that the patch will be released in the next software update, although a specific date has not yet been determined. Samsung has assured users that they will be promptly informed once the software update date is confirmed.

In addition to concerns about neon signs, users have also reported noise in images taken in low-light conditions, particularly when capturing the sky. It is hoped that the forthcoming update will address this issue as well.

Overall, Samsung aims to improve the low-light camera performance of the Galaxy S22 series through an upcoming software update, providing users with enhanced image quality and a more satisfying photography experience.

Just last month, we also reported on the Apple Sale Days promotional event where the cost of the device fell to its then-lowest 67,999 INR.

Apple

Samsung Galaxy S23 series picking up July 2023 security patch in Europe

We are 10 days into July and Samsung has started to push this month’s security patch to eligible devices. As usual, the latest Galaxy S23 flagships were one of the first to pick up the update in the US last week. Now, the company has started to expand the availability of the July 2023 security update in other regions, starting with Europe. It brings a number of security and bug fixes to the Galaxy S23 series. Here are the details.

Galaxy S23 phones get security fixes with the new update

As reported by Sammobile, the Galaxy S23 units in Europe have started to receive the July 2023 security patch. The software update is said to be available throughout the old continent with version number  S91xBXXS3AWF7. The security patch comes packed in a 429.68MB size and apparently fixes over 90 security flaws found in the previous version. It should make it to other regions in the coming days.

Galaxy S23 featured

It seems the update does not bring any major features or improvements. It shouldn’t be surprising since it was only last month when Samsung released a “super” camera update for the S23 series, which addresses night mode, and autofocus among other issues.

Samsung Galaxy S23 users in Europe should be getting an OTA notification for the update. If not, they can head to Settings and Software Update and tap Download and Install to install the update on their phones.

The Korean company may also allow S23 users to test the new One UI 6 based on Android 14 very soon. Reports suggest the beta program for the software will commence in less than a month, presumably before the Unpacked event scheduled on July 26.

M3-Powered iMacs Reportedly In Works, 32-Inch Model May Debut By 2025

Last month, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman revealed Apple’s product roadmap for the rest of this year and the first half of 2024. He added that two new iMacs will be coming this year and a 32-inch iMac is also reportedly in development. Now, Gurman has revealed some more details about the iMacs. Read on to learn more about the story below.

Apple working on new iMacs

Apple’s iMacs are quite popular due to their minimalistic design with an all-in-one setup. However, there is only one model that is available and it is already aging. It is the 24-inch iMac from 2021 that is powered by the dated M1 processor. It hasn’t been long since Apple already discontinued the 27-inch iMac and iMac Pro.

In the latest development, Gurman reveals that Apple is working on more powerful versions of the iMac. These will include the current 24-inch iMac with the M3 chipset making it a significant upgrade over the M1 variant. The other iMac is said to be even more powerful with a larger 32-inch screen. It is said to be similar to Apple’s Pro Display XDR and feature an IPS LCD panel with a 6K resolution and 10-bit colors. Both M3-powered iMacs are reported to leverage TSMC’s 3nm process instead of the current 5nm process offering better performance and power efficiency.

The 24-inch iMac was supposed to arrive in the second half of this year, however, it is now predicted to debut early next year. The wait gets even longer for the 32-inch iMac with Gurman saying that it could arrive in late 2024 or even in 2025. He added that the design process for the bigger iMac is just getting started.

Tata to become first Indian iPhone manufacturer as Wistron deal nears completion

Tata Group is on the verge of acquiring Wistron Corp’s Karnataka factory, a facility that assembles iPhone 14. Should the acquisition be successful, Tata will become the first Indian company to produce iPhones, not just for the domestic market but also for global distribution. The deal, which is expected to be finalized by August, is a part of India’s drive to establish itself as a leading player in hardware manufacturing, a vision championed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s made-in-India initiative.

Apple iPhone 13

India’s Drive to Become a Global Hardware Manufacturer

The Karnataka factory, currently valued at $600 million, has a workforce of over 10,000 employees. As part of an existing contract, Wistron is committed to delivering iPhones worth $1.8 billion in the current fiscal year through March 2024. The plan also includes expanding the workforce threefold in the next year. Tata Group has reportedly agreed to honor these commitments.

The acquisition is significant in the context of shifting global manufacturing dynamics, as many tech firms are seeking alternatives to China for their high-end device assembly. Apple, in particular, is turning its attention to India as a new production hub. The move aligns with India’s aggressive tax incentives to promote the domestic manufacture of electronics, including smartphones.

Moreover, India has attracted other major smartphone manufacturers such as Samsung, Xiaomi, and Vivo, to establish local production facilities. Smartphone exports from India, which include iPhone exports, have reportedly increased by 128% in April and May of this year. Despite Vedanta’s failed joint venture with Foxconn for a semiconductor project, India’s ambition to bolster its domestic electronics industry remains strong, with Tata’s imminent acquisition playing a vital role.

Apple supplier Foxconn eyes India’s chip subsidies after pulling out from Vedanta deal

Known Apple supplier Foxconn is apparently eyeing the chipmaking subsidies being offered by the Indian government. The news arrives soon after the company pulled out of its multi-billion dollar deal with Vedanta for a chip manufacturing partnership.

Foxconn seeks chip subsidiaries to expand in India

After the deal with Vedanta was terminated, it appears that the contract manufacturer is planning on using the incentives being offered in India to set up a new semiconductor unit in the region. Foxconn stated earlier today (11th July 2023) that it is working on applying under the Modified Programme for Semiconductors and Display Fab Ecosystem in India. This is the sizeable 10 billion US Dollar incentive that helps lower the capital costs for semiconductor and display manufacturing projects by up to 50 percent.

Foxconn

As per their official statement, “We have been actively reviewing the landscape for optimal partners. Foxconn is committed to India and sees the country successfully establishing a robust semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem.” Notably, the company’s recent split with Vedanta also deals a hit to the Modi government which has been pushing for semiconductor production within the country.

But while the Foxconn-Vedanta deal fell apart, the former is still looking to expand in India by setting up its own semiconductor and display manufacturing unit. Furthermore, the company is also in talks with partners that are both domestic and international to make semiconductors in the region for products that include the growing EV market (Electric Vehicles).

Alleged Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 hands-on images leaked

Ahead of Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Unpacked event on July 26th, hands-on images of the Galaxy Z Fold 5 have surfaced online, providing a closer look at the device’s design. While the leaked images show similarities to its predecessor, the Galaxy Z Fold 4, there are a few subtle refinements worth noting.

Galaxy Z Fold 5 Highlight Subtle Design Refinements

The photos showcase the Fold 5’s cover display, back, and the redesigned hinge, which now allows the device to close fully flat. Although the overall appearance remains similar, keen observers will spot slight modifications in the rear camera setup, featuring a larger lens protrusion and a separate LED flash.

One image reveals the inner folding display; however, its quality makes it difficult to determine if the crease is visible. It’s important to note that the leaked unit appears to be a test model, as it features several identifying labels on both the front and back. The images were obtained by a Redditor who claims they were shared by someone looking to sell the unit.

Galaxy Z Fold 5 hands on image

In terms of design, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 seems to focus on subtle enhancements rather than major changes compared to its predecessor. Notably, Samsung has worked on making the device appear thinner when closed and has introduced a zero-gap hinge for improved aesthetics.

While external design updates are limited, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 is expected to offer notable internal improvements. Reports suggest a switch to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy chip, delivering faster and more efficient performance, along with speedy UFS 4.0 storage. The device is expected to feature a primary 50MP camera, a 12MP ultrawide camera, and a 10MP telephoto camera featuring 3x optical zoom.

Global PC Shipments Decline In Q2, 2023 But Apple Registers Double Digit Growth

The second quarter of the year ended last month. Now, global markets intelligence firm International Data Corporation (IDC) has shared results of global PC shipments in the second quarter of this year i.e the period from April to June. The personal computing market experienced a significant decline over-on year in Q2, 2023. However, the contraction is lesser than Q1, 2023. Read on to know everything below.

PC market experiences a decline in Q2, 2023

Global PC shipments Q2, 2023

In Q2, 2023, the global PC shipments dipped 13.4 percent YoY basis. This is far lesser than a 29 percent contraction in Q1 this year. The market saw a sixth consecutive quarterly decline. IDC attributes this to factors like macroeconomic headwinds, weak demand, and a shift in IT budgets. The weak demand also resulted in higher inventory.

As for OEMs, Lenovo, Dell, and Acer registered double-digit declines in Q2, 2023 compared to the same period last year. Only Apple registered growth. Lenovo still led the market with 14.2 million shipments and a 23.1 percent share. HP came second with 13.1 million units sold and a 21.8 percent share. Dell was third on the list with 10.3 million shipped devices and a 16.8 percent market share. Apple bagged the fourth spot by selling 5.3 million units and having an 8.6 percent share of the market. The Cupertino-based tech giant also grew 10.3 percent year-on-year basis. Acer was the fifth on the list with a 3.2 percent market share.

IDC reports that Apple had a favorable YoY comparison as the company faced supply issues during 2Q22 due to COVID-related supply constraints. On the other hand, HP dealt with an oversupply of inventory in the past year and has now approached normal levels.
