First Xiaomi Car gets final pricing, set to debut next year; claims supplier

Since Xiaomi’s announcement of its entry into the automobile industry, anticipation has been growing among industry experts and consumers alike. The progress of Xiaomi’s first car model has been a subject of interest, and recent reports suggest significant developments. According to CNMO, a supplier involved in the project has claimed that pricing for Xiaomi’s first car model has been finalized.

Steady Production Progress and Upcoming Testing Phases

FAW Fuwei Automotive Parts Co., Ltd., based in Changchun, confirmed their active engagement with Xiaomi’s car project and disclosed that several of their subsidiaries have joined Xiaomi’s car purchasing team. This development indicates significant progress in the collaboration between Xiaomi and its suppliers.

Earlier, a social media leak suggesting a starting price of 149,900 yuan ($20,777) for Xiaomi’s car had sparked discussions. However, Wang Hua, the head of Xiaomi’s public relations, clarified that this information was false. It was traced back to a self-media report from May 2022 that was mistakenly amplified by the Xiaoice virtual assistant.

The production of Xiaomi’s car is reportedly advancing steadily. In May of this year, Lu Weibing, Xiaomi’s partner and president, shared that the car project was progressing smoothly and had entered an accelerated development stage. The car was spotted being tested in the snow with founder Lei Jun back in January this year. More summer and winter testing are scheduled to be conducted this year. According to the plan, the Xiaomi car is scheduled to be officially launched in the first half of 2024.

Xiaomi Group recently released its financial report for the first quarter of 2023, which included updates on its innovative businesses, such as smart electric vehicles. Despite a decrease in total revenue compared to the same period in 2022, the company’s adjusted net profit witnessed a notable increase.

China Imposes Export Controls on Critical Semiconductor Materials, Escalating Trade War

In an intensifying trade war between China and the United States, Beijing has taken a significant step by imposing export controls on two crucial raw materials essential to the global chipmaking industry. Gallium and germanium, strategic elements used in semiconductors, have become the latest targets in China’s escalating battle for dominance in the semiconductor sector.

The move announced abruptly on Monday, is seen as China’s second major countermeasure against the tech war, following the May sanctions on Micron Technology, one of America’s largest memory chip manufacturers. Industry analysts at Jefferies believe this action is in response to the potential tightening of the US ban on AI chips.

The announcement has sent shockwaves through global supply chains, as companies caught off guard by the restrictions scramble to secure alternative sources of these vital materials. Not only the semiconductor industry but also electric vehicle manufacturers are concerned that curbs on rare earth exports may be the next step in China’s trade retaliation.

The export controls on gallium and germanium products, slated to take effect from August 1, pose a significant threat to the global chipmaking ecosystem. These metals are integral to the production of semiconductors, which are the backbone of various industries, including technology, automotive, telecommunications, and more. With China being a major player in the semiconductor supply chain, disruptions to the availability of these raw materials could reverberate across the global market.

The ongoing trade war between the world’s two largest economies has witnessed a series of retaliatory actions and countermeasures. However, the imposition of export controls on strategic materials crucial to the semiconductor industry marks a significant escalation in tensions. The repercussions of this move could potentially lead to further disruptions in global supply chains, forcing industries to search for alternative sources and further raising concerns about the future of the semiconductor landscape.

As the trade war continues to unfold, all eyes remain on the actions and reactions of both China and the United States, as well as the impact they will have on various sectors heavily reliant on semiconductors and the critical technologies they enable.

Let’s take a closer look at the details.

Keychron Q9 Plus brings serious customizability

The Keychron Q9 Plus comes with a minimalistic design. It is a 40% keyboard, which means it has a smaller layout than a traditional keyboard. The Q9 Plus also has two space keys, which is something you don’t often see in a regular keyboard. The body of the Q9 Plus is made of CNC aluminum, which makes it sturdy and durable. The Gasket Design central suspension fixed structure design is a new type of keyboard mount that is designed to provide a more comfortable and flexible typing experience.

The Keychron Q9 Plus mechanical keyboard comes with two sets of keycaps: one set for macOS and one set for Windows. The keyboard also supports QMK / VIA open-source key change, which allows you to customize the keymap and program keys to your liking.

The key caps on the Q9 Plus are made of ergonomic OSA PBT ball caps. PBT is a type of plastic that is more durable than ABS, the material that is typically used for keycaps. OSA keycaps are also designed to be more ergonomic, with a spherical shape that is supposed to be more comfortable to type on.

The Keychron Q9 Plus mechanical keyboard is available in three switch bodies: K Pro brown switch, red switch, and banana switch. These are all mechanical switches, which means that they have a spring inside that makes them click or clack when you press them. The Q9 Plus also supports hot-swapping and comes with south-facing RGB lighting effects. In the upper right corner of the keyboard, there is a stepless knob that can be used to adjust the volume.

The brand is expected to debut two devices at this event, the Honor 90 5G and the Honor 90 Pro. Ahead of the launch, the brand teased that the Honor 90 5G will feature an “enhanced display”.

Honor

Although the teaser hints at a curved display and rounded edges, it doesn’t provide detailed information about the display itself. Thankfully, the device has already been released in China, granting us access to all the information we need.

What’s special about the Honor 90 5G’s display?

The Honor 90 5G boasts a 6.7-inch OLED display offering an FHD+ resolution of 2664×1200 pixels. Notably, it supports a refresh rate of up to 120Hz and reaches a peak brightness of 1,600 nits. Android 14-based MIUI beta now available for these Xiaomi phones

Xiaomi has released MIUI 14 for most of its eligible devices. However, not all of these updates are based on Android 13. Some popular Xiaomi smartphones still run Android 12 as the underlying operating system, even though they have the latest version of MIUI. While these users wait to get the Android 13 update, Xiaomi has announced the Android 14-based MIUI beta for three of its popular flagships. Here are the details.

Xiaomi 13 and 13 Pro getting Android 14 but not the 13 Ultra

According to the official announcement, Xiaomi is now seeking beta testers to try out the MIUI based on Android 14. The company has decided to offer early access to the software for users of Xiaomi 13, Xiaomi 13 Pro, and Xiaomi 12T. It is surprising to see that Xiaomi has not included its latest ultra flagship, the Xiaomi 13 Ultra (review), in the roster. Notably, the Xiaomi 12T Pro is also missing out.

Xiaomi is currently recruiting beta testers for the MIUI 14.1 update, which is expected to be released in stable form later this year. The company is looking for only 2000 users for each of the above-mentioned devices. Also, selections will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Xiaomi notes that beta testers should be willing to go to the local Xiaomi service center if devices can’t be turned on after updating.

Most importantly, the company will only accept applicants running the Global ROM of the devices. Other versions such as Europe and Indian builds will have to wait. To check your version, go to settings and then the About phone section of your device.

It appears that, similar to MIUI 14, the upcoming MIUI 15 will also be based on both newer and older versions of Android—Android 13 and 14. Recently, alpha builds of the software were spotted on the Xiaomi server, indicating that the development is going strong.
