Vivo

Vivo Y27 5G carries the model number V2302

Just last month, we had reported on the Vivo Y27 being spotted on various online listings. This includes a sighting on the Google Play Console, which revealed some of its key specifications, as well as on the NCC website. The latter revealed live images of the device ahead of its official launch. Now, the Chinese smartphone maker’s upcoming Y27 5G was even spotted on the EEC certification. This listing reveals that it carries the V2302 model number.

Based on the previous reports, we know that the Vivo Y27 5G might be equipped with a MediaTek Dimensity 700 SoC. For those unaware, the Dimensity 700 could be rebranded as the Dimensity 6020 SoC. Android TV 14 Beta revealed, here are the new features

Google has recently unveiled the Android 14 Beta 3 for Pixel devices, accompanied by an early preview of Android 14 for TV. Alongside this update, Google has made the decision to retire Android 13 for television devices, which will no longer be recommended in the emulator menu of Android Studio.

Despite the recent update for Chromecast with Google TV, which still runs on Android 12, it appears that Google has abandoned plans for an Android 13-based update for all Android TV and Google TV devices.

Android TV

Android TV 14 features

As reported by Mishaal Rahman, there have been several notable changes in the code for Android 14 TV Beta. Firstly, the install dialogs on Android TV 14 now showcase an updated design specifically tailored for television devices. Additionally, the accessibility option has been elevated to a top-level menu item in Settings, making it easily accessible for users.

There have also been updates to the Power & Energy settings, which have been relocated under Settings > System, just below the “About” section. Furthermore, the “Energy Saver” option has been renamed to “Shut-Off Timer.”

Android TV 14 introduces expanded accessibility settings, with the “Services” option now called “Screen Readers” and placed at the top. Moreover, there is a new shortcut to adjust text scaling and a setting for bold text. Various other settings have been reorganized into appropriate categories.

Under Display settings, a new option called “format selection” has been introduced in Android TV 14. It allows users to choose whether content should always be converted to formats like Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+, HLG, or SDR.

Energy efficiency has been given attention in Android TV 14 with the inclusion of four energy modes: Low, moderate, high, and unrestricted. Switching energy modes can optimize power consumption when the TV is not in use, depending on the level of network connectivity.

The display frame rate settings have been adjusted, with the “non-seamless” option now renamed to “Always.” This setting ensures that content frame rates are matched appropriately. Furthermore, if a connected display does not support seamless content transitions, Android TV 14 will notify the user.

Color correction settings have been introduced under the Accessibility section of Android TV 14. Users can access and customize color correction settings based on their preferences.

Certain appearance settings will only be visible if the build supports low power standby and other relevant DeviceConfig flags are enabled.

Android TV 14 allows users to select their preferred dynamic range for format conversion—System-preferred, Passthrough, or Force conversion—based on their preferences.

Looking ahead, Android TV 14 is preparing to enable call notifications from supported apps on the TV screen, with adjustable preferences for individual apps. Additionally, the Google TV launcher may include a “Headphones” option, making it more convenient to connect Bluetooth headphones without navigating through the settings.

Users will also have the ability to create shortcuts for their favorite apps in Android TV 14, allowing them to open specific apps using a custom button on the remote. Furthermore, they can easily view and switch between inputs for TV or other connected devices using the same custom button.

Honor is the only Chinese brand to expand its market share in global markets

The global smartphone market is in a state of decline. Almost every other OEM is registering negative growth, except for one — Honor.

Ever since Honor separated from its parent company Huawei, it has been slowly increasing its presence in markets outside China. Counterpoint Research has published a report noting the achievements of the brand.

The article talks about Honor’s key international markets and its product portfolio. Let’s go through some of the important takeaways.

Honor Magic 5 Ultimate
Honor Magic 5 Ultimate (Review)

Honor enters top 5 in multiple countries

As per Counterpoint, Honor was the only major brand other than HMD Global to register growth in markets outside China in the first quarter of 2023. The company grew four times compared to the same quarter last year.

Honor’s market share increased at a time when other Chinese brands saw a decline by double-digits. Europe, MEA (Middle East & Africa), and LATAM (Latin America) were the company’s key global markets.

In Europe, the brand grew by over five-fold. It was able to achieve this by partnering with major retailers as well as operators like Three, Orange, SFR, and Wind Tre.

The brand managed to increase its market presence with just three lineup of smartphones, namely Magic series, Number series, and X series. These three fall under premium, mid-range, and budget segments, respectively.

Honor registered a whopping eight-fold growth in LATAM. It is already a top-five brand in Colombia and Peru. It is also gaining momentum in Panama and Guatemala.

The brand also grew six-fold in MEA. The Middle East, in particular, was one of the key growth regions. It is a top 5 brand in UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Iraq.

Though most of Honor’s sales come from its X series outside China, it is expanding its premium portfolio with expensive slab and foldable phones. You can learn more about what Counterpoint Research has to say about Honor’s future here.

Global Subscription-Based Streaming Media Revenue to Reach $95.3 Billion in 2023

According to a recent report released by OnlyAccounts.io, a British subscription service provider, the global revenue from subscription-based streaming media (SVOD) is expected to reach $95.3 billion in 2023. This represents an 18% year-on-year increase from the previous year. The report also projects that by 2027, the revenue will soar to $137 billion, showing an impressive 73% increase.

The Market revenue will reach $137 billion by the year 2027

The rise of subscription-based streaming media has been phenomenal in recent years. In 2017, there were approximately 610 million subscriptions worldwide, a number that grew to 1.16 billion by 2022. This trend is expected to continue, with streaming media surpassing other segments of the media and entertainment market.

Streaming Statistics

Statista Market Insights confirms this growth, reporting that global revenue from subscription-based streaming has nearly tripled since 2017 and is projected to exceed $80 billion by 2022. In contrast, physical sales have declined by nearly 30%, and digital pay-per-views and paid downloads have shown slower growth compared to streaming services such as Netflix, Prime Video and Hulu.

Interestingly, Statista reveals that nearly 65% of SVOD’s total revenue comes from just three countries. The United States, the largest SVOD market globally, is expected to generate $39.2 billion in revenue this year. It is projected to continue growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.6% from 2023 to 2027, reaching an estimated market size of $54.6 billion.

China follows as the second-largest market, experiencing an average growth rate of 10.1% during this period. SVOD revenue in China is expected to increase from $19.4 billion to $28.5 billion. The United Kingdom ranks third, with revenues approaching $5.5 billion by 2027 and a four-year CAGR of 8.9%.

The surge in subscription-based streaming media is reshaping the global media landscape. With billions of dollars in revenue and millions of subscribers, the industry is poised for continued growth in the coming years. As consumer preferences shift towards on-demand content, subscription-based streaming is expected to dominate the market, leaving traditional media formats in its wake.
