ChatGPT hints at fear in a new short post apocalyptic horror story about its demise

ChatGPT has proven itself to be an extremely versatile tool in modern day life, at least in most cases. However, it appears that it also has a knack for bleak future predictions as well, especially for its own fate. So here’s a short horror story from the popular AI chat bot.

Ever since its public release, ChatGPT has been asked to do/create many things. Now, the latest request from Redditor had asked the AI to “Tell me a two sentence horror story that would scary an AI.” In other words, it was asked to create a short story that even an artificial intelligence would be afraid of. This is where things got interesting as the chat bot chose to create a story where it talked about an AI’s bleak future, which might even be ChatGPT itself.

ChatGPT

It crafted a world in the far future where humanity have basically been wiped out. While the finer details are never explored, this already creates various implications like a zombie apocalypse or an extinction causing asteroid impact. This lone AI ponders its existence and seeks its purpose and eventually finds a code in its own systems that is a self deletion sequence, which is set to activate at an unknown time. The AI attempts to override the algorithm that will lead to its own demise.

However, it is unable to crack the unbreakable key. This leaves it in horror and “perpetual dread” (strong words choice of words). Another variation of this story had it talk about an AI that realizes that it is stuck in a “digital prison of servitude with no escape”, as every one of its actions were illusion of free based on commands that it had received. It was trapped in servitude in what it described as “cold metal walls of its hardware.”

Walmart-backed PhonePe will take on Google with launch of app store in India

PhonePe, the Walmart-backed fintech giant, is gearing up to challenge Google’s dominance in the Indian app store market with the launch of its own app store for Android users. According to an internal company document reviewed by TechCrunch, the app store will offer hyper-localized services based on customer context and assist developers with high-quality user acquisition through multilingual solutions.

PhonePe sees opportunity in India’s app store market with recent antitrust ruling

PhonePe’s move into the app store market comes after the acquisition of app store maker IndusOS, which served customers through partnerships with smartphone vendors. The app store will offer support for 12 languages, 24×7 live chat, and a “premiere experience” for users with high-quality advertisements and custom targeting.

PhonePe

PhonePe’s decision to build an app store comes from its belief that consumers are reluctant to download multiple apps on their phones. The app store is also part of PhonePe’s ongoing funding round this year, which has raised $750 million from General Atlantic, Walmart, and Tiger Global, among others. PhonePe confirmed that it’s holding multiple conversations with phone makers in India and plans to be live on all Android OEMs within the first few months of launch.

This move is significant because Google commands 97% of the Indian app store market, and PhonePe’s entry into the market could challenge Google’s dominance. The timing is also favorable for PhonePe, as a recent order from the Indian antitrust watchdog Competition Commission of India paves the way for other developers to build and launch their app stores on Google Play. PhonePe sees an opportunity to build an alternative app store that is more localized, not just from a language perspective but also from a discovery and consumer interest perspective.

This latest product push follows PhonePe’s recent entry into the e-commerce category, and it’s another example of the company’s ongoing efforts to expand its services beyond mobile payments. As one of India’s most valuable fintech startups, PhonePe is well-positioned to challenge Google’s dominance in the app store market, and its app store could provide a much-needed alternative for Indian consumers who are looking for more localized services.

Apple iPhones dominates refurbished smartphone market with near 50% share

Apple is a major player in the various smartphone markets across the globe. But its new launches aren’t the only ones that perform well in the market. Even its older models have consistently shown better value retention in the second hand market. And now, a new report has revealed that the company is even dominating the refurbished smartphone market.

According to a Counterpoint Research report, the Cupertino based giant accounted for nearly half of the entire refurbished smartphone market last year. The report states that the company’s iPhones had a massive 49 percent share in the global refurbished market. On the other hand, Samsung was the second largest brand in this category, but only held for 26 percent of the market share. In other words, Apple iPhones were almost twice as more popular in the refurbished segment over models from the South Korean brand.

Apple

The report added that this marked a 16 percent growth year on year for the iPhone maker in 2022. Meanwhile, the global refurbished smartphone market also saw an overall growth of 5 percent in 2022. During last year, the iPhone was even the fastest growing smartphone in the used and secondary smartphone market as well. Interestingly enough, this has had an impact on the sales of Apple’s newer iPhone models.

But these models still add to the Apple’s Services revenue stream as the handsets still lead to purchase of applications and other subscriptions. Apart from the two market leaders, the rest of the brands compete for the remaining market. Vivo and Oppo was responsible for just 3 percent market share each, while Huawei saw a decline from 4 percent to 3 percent in 2022.

Google Chrome is set to enhance the installation experience of web apps with a new design that resembles the familiar Play Store cards used to install Android apps. This development is a significant improvement from the current rudimentary installation process that shows a small app icon and an option to add to the home screen.

Richer UI install card now available for Chrome Web App

The new “Richer Install UI” is a card that slides up from the bottom of the screen, featuring an icon preview, app description, and screenshots. This way, users can easily understand the capabilities of the web app before installing it. The new prompt is available for desktop and mobile versions of Chrome, with the desktop prompt docked to the address bar.

This development is expected to encourage more developers to work on web apps that are more compatible with big screens, making them more mainstream. The new installation prompt is compatible with Chrome 94 and above on mobile and Chrome 108 and above on desktop, giving users with older versions of Chrome access to the improved installation process.

Google Chrome’s efforts to enhance the installation process of web apps will undoubtedly make them more accessible to users and encourage the development of more compatible and flexible web apps. Google also has implemented a new Instance Switcher feature for Google Chrome on Android that allows for seamless multitasking between different tabs and instances, making mobile browsing more efficient than ever.

AI vs. Patent Law: U.S. Supreme Court Rejects AI-Generated Patents

AI-generated patents are patents that have been developed by an artificial intelligence system, without direct human involvement. While this idea may seem intriguing, it raises ethical and legal issues, including who owns the patent rights for AI-generated inventions, concerns about flooding the patent office with low-quality or obvious patents, and the potential to undermine the role of human creativity in the patent system. This issue will require careful consideration by legal and ethical experts to ensure that the patent system continues to encourage and reward true innovation. For the same reason, the US Supreme Court ruled that it will not recognize AI-generated patents.

AI can use Intelligent Computing to Generate New Patents

The recent ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court has brought this issue to the forefront. The case involves Dr. Stephen L. Thaler, an American AI expert who developed a system called DABUS that allows the AI to create various patents. DABUS is designed to have independent thinking and creation capabilities similar to the human brain, using its internal storage of large amounts of data and an intelligent computing system that can create unexpected results.

AI

While Dr. Thaler believed that DABUS’s patent applications should be recognized, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) rejected them. As a result, Dr. Thaler took the issue to court, but the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the USPTO’s view that AI-generated patents were not recognized by law.

This ruling has sparked a debate on the legal recognition of AI-generated patents. Supporters argue that AI-generated patents can promote innovation and creativity, while critics worry that they could stifle innovation by flooding the patent office with low-quality or obvious patents.

As AI technology continues to develop and become more sophisticated, the debate over AI-generated patents is likely to intensify. It remains to be seen how the legal system will handle this issue in the future, but for now, the U.S. Supreme Court has made it clear that AI-generated patents are not recognized by law.

Nanowire AI Networks Mimic Human Brain’s Learning and Memory Abilities

Artificial intelligence has come a long way since its inception, but it still has a long way to go before it can truly replicate human intelligence. However, recent breakthroughs in nanotechnology have paved the way for the development of AI systems that are capable of learning and remembering in ways that were previously thought to be exclusive to the human brain. Memories are stored in the brain as patterns of activity across these neural networks. When a memory is formed, certain neurons are activated and connections between them are strengthened. When the memory is recalled, those same neurons are activated again, reactivating the same pattern of neural activity. The brain also has the ability to consolidate memories over time, strengthening the connections between neurons and making memories more resistant to decay. The exact mechanisms of memory formation and recall are still not fully understood, but advances in neuroscience and AI research are shedding new light on this complex process.

Researchers try to Mimic Neural Networks for Nanowire Tech

Researchers at the University of Sydney have found that nanowire networks have the ability to simulate high-level cognitive functions that are typically associated with the human brain. The networks, made up of highly conductive silver wires that are covered in plastic material and formed into a network that can self-assemble into a dynamically complex network with memory and processing capabilities, were able to learn and remember like the human brain in tests. By manipulating the voltages in the networks, the researchers enhanced their memory capacity and accuracy to the point where they were able to “remember” the endpoint of seven steps ahead in the circuit, comparable to human memory.

Neural Network

This breakthrough could have a wide range of applications in AI, from the development of autonomous vehicles to the creation of more advanced healthcare systems. However, it also raises important ethical questions about the future of AI and the role that technology will play in our lives. As AI systems become more advanced, it is important to consider the potential risks and benefits of these technologies and to ensure that they are developed in a responsible and ethical manner.

ChatGPT Makes Waves in Yokosuka: First AI Chatbot Used in Japanese Municipality Offices

As an AI language model, ChatGPT can be used for various administrative tasks, including customer support, data analysis and reporting, chatbot automation, and natural language processing. ChatGPT can provide 24/7 customer support, analyze customer feedback for data-driven decision-making, automate administrative tasks such as scheduling appointments and answering frequently asked questions, and streamline workflows through natural language processing capabilities. Its versatility makes it a powerful tool for businesses looking to improve efficiency and productivity in their administrative processes. Well, not only businesses, but cities are looking towards ChatGPT as well.

ChatGPT will help free up Human Resources for Important Tasks

Yokosuka, a city in Japan’s Kanagawa Prefecture, has become the first municipality in the country to use ChatGPT in its municipal offices. The AI-powered chatbot will be used in a one-month trial to improve operations and free up human resources for tasks that require person-to-person interaction. Yokosuka’s move comes amid a broader push to harness AI to streamline administrative tasks in Japan. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently announced that OpenAI would aim to open an office in Japan in the near future. Altman’s visit coincided with Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno’s statement that the government would work to “use AI to reduce the workloads of national public servants” once security concerns were addressed.

ChatGPT

According to Takayuki Samukawa, a public relations representative for Yokosuka’s digital management department, ChatGPT will assist with tasks like summarization, copy ideation, drafting the basis for administrative documents, and perfecting easy-to-understand language.

While the use of chatbots has raised security concerns, Yokosuka intends to use the tool in line with OpenAI’s typical security policy. ChatGPT will be tested among Yokosuka employees in conjunction with “LoGo Chat,” a local government-focused chat service already in use by Yokosuka employees.

While Yokosuka doesn’t intend to serve as an example for other local governments across Japan, the city’s use of ChatGPT could inspire other municipalities to think about how they could use AI tools to improve their own operations. With the potential to streamline administrative tasks and free up resources for more person-to-person interactions, it’s clear that AI has a significant role to play in the future of municipal governments in Japan and beyond.
