OnePlus V Fold and V Flip Trademarked At CNIPA

OnePlus is reportedly working on two foldable phones. Back in August last year, Pete Lau subtly hinted at the devices. Now, the brand has trademarked two foldable phones with the China National Intellectual Property Administration. The filing is confirmed to still be active. The names of the trademarked devices are the ‘OnePlus V Fold’ and ‘OnePlus V Flip’.

The trademark listing by CINPA does not reveal any information about the OnePlus foldables. However, it confirms the names of the devices. The OnePlus V Fold and V Flip names resemble Samsung’s naming convention for its foldable phones i.e Galaxy Z Flip and Z Fold. The names of the OnePlus foldables also give us an idea that one device may have a clamshell design while the other will convert into a tablet.

OnePlus has been expanding its product portfolio lately. The brand announced monitors in India last month and is set to launch its first-ever tablet and mechanical keyboard at a global event next week. OnePlus’s sister company OPPO entered the foldable smartphone segment way back in 2021. The latter also unveiled the Find N2 and Find 2 Flip last month in China. Additionally, both brands including Vivo are owned by BBK Electronics. OPPO and Vivo also offer foldable smartphones in China. Hence, it only makes sense for OnePlus to enter the foldable market.

OnePlus co-founder Pete Lau oversaw the development of OPPO’s Find N folding smartphone in 2021. Since OnePlus and OPPO offer similar flagship devices, it could be possible that the OnePlus V Fold and V Flip could be identical to the Find N2 and N2 Flip.

Huawei May Soon Be Cut Off From Key Tech From US Suppliers Like Intel

Huawei has already faced various sanctions from the US government over the last couple of years. But it appears that the restrictions from the Biden administration might be getting even tighter around the company.

As of right now, the Chinese tech giant has US export restrictions around current gen and core technologies like 5G. Although, the US Department of Commerce had recently began granting licenses to some America based firms to sell certain products and technologies to the company. Back in 2020, Qualcomm was allowed to sell 4G enabled smartphones chips to Huawei. But now, it appears that this might soon be reversed.

Huawei

A Commerce Department spokesperson has stated that officials are “continually assess our policies and regulations”. It appears that some officials in the Biden administration are pushing for ban on all sales to the company, which has long been rumored to have ties with the Chinese government, and by its extensions, the Chinese military as well. This news also arrives as the tensions between the US and China has been on the rise, as the former looks to hamper the latter’s advances in the tech field.

In response to this, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated that Beijing “is gravely concerned about the report”. He further added that “China is strongly against the US’s abuse of state power to hobble Chinese companies by stretching the concept of national security”. It remains to be seen when and how these tougher restrictions would be implemented, so stick around for more updates regarding this matter.

Apple Sells 2 Million iPhones In India in Q4, 2022: CMR

Earlier this month, it was reported that Apple exported iPhones worth $1 billion in a month from India. Now CyberMedia Research has shared data on iPhone shipments clocked by Apple in the fourth quarter of 2022 i.e. the period between October to December.

As per the report, Apple India shipped two million iPhones in Q4, 2022, a sequential increase of 18 percent. However, year-on-year shipments during the fourth quarter declined 7 percent. The iPhone 14 series was the most sold iPhone model with a huge 59 percent market share during the three months. The iPhone 13 followed behind with 32 percent sales.

Apple also had its best year in India in 2022. It recorded an 11 percent year-on-year growth in shipments and secured its highest-ever market share of 5.5 percent. This is attributed to local manufacturing and marketing efforts like cashback and instalment plans. Apple still grew in 2022 despite declining Q4 shipments YoY and QoQ compared to 2021.

According to experts Apple is expected to sell even more devices in 2023 compared to 2022. The higher demand for the iPhone 14 Pro models have been noted but supply chain constraints impacted Apple’s performance. However, the aggressive marketing and promotions as well as the festive season sales drove the sales of older iPhone models including the iPhone 13.

Additionally, Apple has been aiming to make India as its manufacturing hub for iPhones. Due to geopolitical concerns between China and US as well as the COVID-19-induced supply chain disruptions, the Cupertino-based tech giant is on a path to diversify its production outside China. As per past reports, Apple is expected to manufacture 20 percent of iPhones in India in the next 2-3 years.

Razer Edge Teardown Reveals a Quick Look At Qualcomm G3X Gen 1 Chip & Cooling Fan

Razer’s new Android-powered gaming handheld, the Razer Edge, was launched earlier this January. With its launch, the company is back in the smartphone game. This device boasts a sleek design, as seen in the newest teardown video by PBKreviews. It is essentially a tablet with a detachable Razer Kishi V2 Pro controller, and when clubbed together, it offers a compact, Switch-like gaming handheld device that can play Android and cloud-based games. What sets the Razer Edge apart from a smartphone is the absence of a rear camera. The only camera is located on the front – along the edge of the display, making it suitable for landscape use.

The early stages of the teardown revealed a card slot, which can accommodate both a nanoSIM and microSD card. The device comes in two models — Razer Edge (Wi-Fi) and Razer Edge 5G. The teardown video also highlighted the missing mmWave antenna found in the 5G model since the device in the video featured Wi-Fi 6E connectivity.

The Edge features a combination of passive and active cooling. As seen in the teardown video, a graphite film is placed on the plastic back panel, while mesh-covered vents and a small fan inside work together to pull heat from the chipset. A vapor chamber on the other side of the board expels heat through the display. Concluding the teardown, PBKreviews gave the Razer Edge a repairability score of 6.5/10, citing the limited availability of replacement parts as the main complaint.

Under the hood, the device is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon G3X Gen 1 processor, which is built for gaming purposes and promises active cooling during prolonged game sessions. The Razer Edge is currently the only device in the market to be powered by this new chipset. The device packs 8GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 128GB of UFS 3.1 internal storage, which can be further expanded up to 2TB using a microSD card. The Razer Edge Wi-Fi model is priced at $399.99, while the 5G model is priced at $599.99.

Rumors: Apple Might Not Launch a Folding iPad Even in 2024

As per past rumors, Apple was supposed to be working on a foldable iPad to be launched in the year 2024. Previously, it was speculated that the Apple foldable iPad might replace the iPad Mini lineup. Recent reports, however, have indicated that Apple’s iPad updates will be delayed until the end of 2024, with the launch of a new iPad Mini 7 and a foldable iPad to fill the gap.

Apple Folding iPad

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo is known for his accurate predictions of Apple product releases using supply-chain data. However, Mark Gurman from Bloomberg has shared his own insights, contradicting Kuo’s predictions slightly. According to Gurman, 2023 will be a “light year” for iPads, with no foldable iPad in sight. He believes that the long-awaited OLED iPad Pros will be introduced in 2024, along with upgrades for the base iPad and iPad mini

Past reports have stated that the 20-inch foldable device will offer a screen size of 20.25 inches when unfolded. When folded, it will offer a 15.3-inch screen size. The report also stated that Apple will only release foldable devices after engineering OLED panels into its lineup. Since Apple hasn’t incorporated OLED displays into their iPads yet, it might take a fair amount of time before they unveil a folding iPad.

Gurman’s information is believed to come from his contacts within Apple and the supply chain, and while he often aligns with Kuo, this time, he disagrees. Despite years of speculation and hints, it is still unclear if Apple will ever release a folding device, as the market for such products is still limited. Furthermore, Apple is known to improve on its existing technology before launching a product in the market, so we can expect the same for its first folding device.

Nothing Phone (2) Coming Later This Year, Will Be More Premium Than the Phone (1)

Back in December, Nothing CEO Carl Pei stated that Nothing Phone (2) won’t be launching anytime soon. He added that the brand won’t be like other OEMs on the market that churn out dozens of products a year, and would rather focus on the Phone (1) and the development of its software.

As one can expect, this statement left many fans and potential customers waiting for the Phone (2) disappointed. However, in a recent interview with Inverse, Nothing’s founder clarified that the Phone (2) will indeed be launching in 2023.

Noting
Image source: Zana Latif on Unsplash

Pei confirmed in the interview that the Phone (2) will debut in the US. The launch of the phone is likewise expected for “late 2023.” As we know, Nothing’s philosophy revolves around providing a better experience software-wise than its Android competitors, who usually chase after hardware specifications. But this time, the upcoming Nothing smartphone is said to be a high-end model. This suggests that the phone might cost more than its predecessor did. Pei did not provide any details, however, enough hints were given to confirm that the Phone (2) will have a better spec sheet than its predecessor. “We’re developing a smartphone that’s more premium than the Nothing Phone (1) and software will be a big focus area for us,” Pei said.

When asked if the Phone (2) will compete against flagship devices like the iPhone 14 Pro, and the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, Pei said “I think the market and the industry have moved a lot since those days. For us, the Phone (1)’s spec sheet was pretty usable in terms of user experience,” Pei says. “Mobile chipsets have really improved over the last 7–9 years. That’s why I want to avoid calling the Phone (2) a flagship because that would mean that the Phone (1) was not a flagship. Within our own portfolio of smartphones, the Phone (1) was very much a flagship in terms of the amount of care we put into the product. That’s why I used the word ‘premium’ [to describe the Phone (2)] instead, which signifies that it’s a more premium step up, but it’s still a flagship just like the Phone (1).”

Although the device is still under development, we can expect it to be more expensive, and more decked out spec-wise. No design changes were mentioned in the interview, which could mean that Nothing could be sticking to the semi-transparent body and Glyph interface for the time being.

A massive Leviathan Axe from the God of War game has made an appearance next to the London Eye. Fans can expect to see similar marketing pop-ups to come across Europe this week.

This marketing push comes just after the release of the new DualSense Edge controller and ahead of the much-anticipated launch of the PlayStation VR2 on February 22nd, retailing for $549.99. This upgraded VR headset boasts an OLED screen, a 110-degree field of view, 4K HDR support, and the capability to run games at up to 120Hz for an even smoother gaming experience. With over 30 games, including Gran Turismo 7, Resident Evil Village, and Horizon Call of the Mountain, set to release in the launch window, the VR2 will surely be something to watch out for.

iQOO 12 Likely to Support Faster Wired Charging, Wireless Charging

In December 2022, iQOO unveiled the iQOO 11 and iQOO 11 Pro smartphones. The brand is now said to be working on the iQOO 12 lineup. In a new Weibo post, tipster Digital Chat Station (via. TechGoing) has seemingly shared the first details about the standard iQOO 12.

The iQOO 12 series should be launching by mid-2023 in the home market. The lineup will probably consist of the iQOO 12 and 12 Pro. These devices are expected to replace the iQOO 11 and 11 Pro, which supports 120W and 200W fast charging, respectively. The iQOO 11 Pro also supports 50W wireless charging. The iQOO 10 and 10 Pro models also offered the same charging capabilities. Here is a look at what to expect from the iQOO 12 lineup’s charging capabilities.

As can be seen in the screengrab above, the tipster has mentioned the charging capabilities of an upcoming flagship phone. While he has not explicitly mentioned the name of the device, he seems to be talking about the vanilla iQOO 12. He revealed that the device will arrive with an upgraded charging solution.

It seems that the iQOO 12 will support either 120W or 200W wired charging. There is a possibility that it could be somewhere between those numbers, such as 150W or 180W. While the predecessor Pro models supported wireless charging, none of the brand’s previous standard flagship phones did.

iQOO 11

The tipster has said nothing about the other specs of the iQOO 12 or the charging capabilities of the iQOO 12 Pro. In all likelihood, the Pro model will continue to support 200W wired charging and 50W wireless charging. Hopefully, the rumor mill will shed more light on the iQOO 12 series in the coming weeks.

LG to Launch Gram 17 Ultrabooks With RTX 3050 on February 1

LG has finally revealed the much-awaited launch date and price of its latest Gram 17 laptops. The latest iteration of this popular lineup of lightweight laptops will hit the market on February 1st. Earlier this year at the CES 2023, LG also showcased updates to its Gram series, including the Gram 17. The Gram17 now features a variable refresh rate, Dolby Atmos support, and 13th Gen Intel processors. This new series has been dubbed the “LG Gram Pro,” but it will simply be listed as “LG Gram 17” on LG’s website.

It appears that LG will launch two models. The cheaper variant will feature an NVIDIA RTX 3050 GPU, 16 gigs of RAM, and 1TB SSD. On the other hand, the higher-end variant will feature the same GPU but 32GB RAM and 2TB SSD. Both aforementioned models will be powered by Intel Core i7-1360P processors.

Other Gram models, in 16-inch, 15-inch, and 14-inch sizes, are also set to receive upgrades later this year. These new models, which include the 17Z90R, 16Z90R, 15Z90R, and 14Z90R, aim to provide users with a balance of performance and portability. Equipped with the latest Intel Evo platform, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 GPU, 13th Gen Intel Core processors, LPDDR5 RAM, and Gen4 NVMe SSD, these laptops will be capable of handling demanding tasks with ease, LG claims. Despite their lightweight design, the new Gram laptops boast a large battery capable of providing over 20 hours of video playback on a single charge.

It’s worth noting that the new Gram 17 is different from the iridescent-finished Gram Style and the 16-inch Gram UltraSlim, which were also unveiled at CES earlier this year. While those models may be eye-catching, it’s the tried and tested Gram 17 that may be the more practical and reliable choice for many customers in 2023. The laptops can be purchased via LG’s official website and selected retail outlets post-launch. The base model will be priced at $1999, whereas the higher-end option will be priced at $2299.
