But now, Derick Gant credits his Apple Watch for saving his life after he suffered from a stroke. He was exercising outdoors when the stroke hit, causing him to experience a fall.

Thankfully, Gant was wearing his Apple Watch, which managed to detect the fall and offered to call emergency services. While Derick initially brushed off the fall, he couldn’t feel his legs or arms after a few minutes. This prompted him to reach out for help. After a short wait, paramedics came to treat him. But the Apple Watch not only managed to detect the fall, it also automatically sent out alerts of the incident to Gant’s emergency contacts.

Derick, a 57 year old man, managed to make a full recovery within a year, but thanked his Apple Watch after the entire ordeal. The stroke was caused by his pre-existing medical conditions, which impacted the oxygen delivery to his brain. In a similar incident, a senior citizen was also saved by the fall detection feature in the UK.

Despite Apple agreeing to settle this lawsuit, it has officially stated that it strongly disagrees with the claims made in the lawsuit. But the company “agreed to settle to avoid further litigation.” Furthermore, the exact amount of payments made varies since it depends on the number of people who come forward with their claims. However, we can expect early Apple Watch users to get around $20 to $50.

The AFib history feature is designed to observe a subject’s AFib burden weekly estimate before and after using a cardiac ablation device during a clinical trial.

The Apple Watch AFib History feature regularly checks the user’s heart rhythm for signs of AFib. After a week of checking, it estimates how often your heart was beating irregularly while wearing the Apple Watch. The AFib detection software is also designed to be used as a biomarker test to help evaluate estimates of AFib burden as a secondary effectiveness endpoint in clinical studies to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of cardiac ablation devices. These are important emerging devices that could significantly reduce the burden of the atrial fibrillation condition on a patient.

It is noted that atrial fibrillation can be detected by several traditional methods including using the ECG or even a home blood pressure monitor. There are also some smart wearable devices apart from the Apple Watch that are capable of detecting atrial fibrillation.

This shift from LTPS to oxide in the driver transistors translates to these display-pixel-connected transistors being made from oxide. LTPO OLEDs utilize oxides to minimize leakage current, and this new approach signifies a broader application of oxides within the display. Technical issues ended Apple’s 3-year Android watch experiment

In response, Apple publicly disclosed that it had considered making the Apple Watch compatible with Android smartphones. However, this idea was ultimately abandoned due to technical challenges.

Apple revealed that it spent three years exploring the feasibility of an Android-compatible Apple Watch. Nevertheless, the company decided to scrap the project because of technical limitations.

The disclosure aligns with earlier reports by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who discussed both technical hurdles and business considerations influencing Apple’s decision. 

Although the chance of Apple making its watches compatible with Android seems slim, the US lawsuit might make the company reevaluate its decision. Apple might need to explore new ways to enable the compatibility.

No doubt, there’s an advantage for consumers if all devices, regardless of brand, could seamlessly work together. However, Apple’s strength lies in its tightly integrated ecosystem. Users greatly appreciate the seamless connection between iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and other Apple products.

There’s some good news for Apple Watch users in the US who miss the blood oxygen monitoring function. As per recent developments, there is a chance for its return, though the timeline is quite uncertain – and possibly very long.

Apple is trying to appeal the ban, which may result in a sooner reinstatement

Remember when Apple was sued by Masimo for infringing the pulse oximetry technology used to measure blood oxygen levels? This decision affected the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2. Documents from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) indicate Apple can potentially resume selling Apple Watches with the blood oxygen feature by August 2028 at the latest. This coincides with the expiration of the patent Apple was found to have infringed upon.

However, this isn’t the only factor at play. Apple is actively appealing the ban imposed by the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC). If their appeal is successful, the blood oxygen functionality could return sooner than August 2028.

The whole situation is further complicated by the lack of a settlement between Apple and Masimo, the patent holder. As of now, a licensing agreement seems unlikely. Reports state that Masimo’s CEO remains open to discussion but hasn’t engaged with Apple yet.

That’s not all. Masimo is raising concerns that Apple might enable the blood oxygen function on jailbroken iPhones through software updates. They’re advocating for stricter restrictions, ideally at the hardware level, to prevent this possibility. This fiasco might end up costing Apple billions of dollars since Apple Watches are some of its most popular products next to the iPhones and Macs. Fortunately, during a conversation, she shared her situation with a friend who convinced her to see a doctor instead of ignoring the warning. It turned out to be the right decision.

After visiting the hospital, Luebke learned that she was diabetic, and her blood sugar levels were critically high. Reflecting on the situation, she said, “If I had waited until the weekend, I probably wouldn’t have survived. If I hadn’t received the notification on my watch, that would have been the end.”

Luebke’s story is an example of how even simple technology like the Apple Watch can play a crucial role in early detection of health issues and saving lives. Tony Jauncey, an 82-year-old man from Kidderminster, UK, found a lifesaver in his Christmas gift, an Apple Watch, after being hit by a car on January 19, 2024. The incident, which took place at a painted roundabout intersection, left him with significant injuries, including a broken collarbone and cracked ribs.

He was unable to move or cancel the alert, which led to the prompt action by the watch

Jauncey was crossing the street to get to his car parked at a local supermarket when a car, not adhering to the roundabout rules, struck him. Despite the common belief that roundabouts are safer, this unfortunate event proves that accidents can still happen.

The moment he was hit, Jauncey’s Apple Watch kicked into action. It detected his fall and automatically asked if he needed to call emergency services. Unable to move or cancel the alert, the watch called for help on its own. This quick response brought the needed assistance to Jauncey at a critical time.

The driver involved in the accident stopped immediately to help, and, luckily, three off-duty nurses were close by to offer first aid until the emergency services arrived. This collective effort, along with the smartwatch’s timely alert, played a vital role in Jauncey’s survival and recovery. The doctor, Rashid Diaz (43 years) is employed by the Hereford County Hospital, England, and was on a Ryanair flight from Birmingham, England to Verona, Italy on January 9, 2024. During the flight, an elderly woman became short of breath and Diaz volunteered to help after a crew member asked if there was a doctor on the flight. The woman was reported to be initially unresponsive to Riaz’s questions, but the doctor, after learning that the woman had a history of heart problems, requested the flight attendant’s Apple Watch. He used the Apple Watch to monitor the sick woman’s blood oxygen levels using the gadget’s blood oxygen app, which indicated low oxygen saturation.

Apple Watch has turned out to become one vital wearable device

Riaz then asked the flight crew for an oxygen cylinder which assisted him in stabilizing the woman’s oxygen saturation until the plane landed in Verona. The woman thereafter received additional medical assistance and was reported to have recovered quickly. Dr. Diaz stated that he used a lot of his learning during the flight on how to use the Apple Watch. He also stressed that it is a lesson in how we can improve in-flight journeys with such basic gadgets that can help in emergencies. It can be detected by carbon monoxide detectors in the home but Miss Nasatka did not have a carbon monoxide detector at home at the time of the incident.

The SOS message was immediately acted on by the authorities and firefighters arrived at Miss Nasatka’s residence and dragged her out of bed to safety. Michael Gallegos, A Wichita, Kansas resident, credits his still being alive to his Apple Watch. He said that he received a low heart rate notification from his Apple Watch. This indicated and alerted him that his heart rate had fallen below 40 beats per minute for more than 10 minutes. The watch also detected an irregular heart rhythm while Gallegos was sleeping. This vital information was then shared with his son Nick via Apple Health’s notifications. The son then took his dad to a health facility where doctors identified an undiagnosed heart condition. Michael Gallegos was then fitted with a pacemaker. The doctors said he was pretty lucky and Michael has thanked his son for getting him the Apple Watch. Nick subsequently sent an email to Apple CEO, Cook to thank him for the Apple Watch and share the story.

The second Apple Watch story is connected with 68-year-old Christopher Oakley from Asheville, North Carolina. He credited his Apple Watch for providing heart data that helped to explain what he had experienced to his doctors. It was concluded, after an analysis of the Apple Watch data, that Oakley had suffered a minor heart attack.

The Apple Watch showed that Oakley’s heart had been racing at 121-151 almost all night long. That information, according to Oakley, was lifesaving, as he had to undergo emergency double bypass surgery. Christopher Oakley also sent an email to Tim Cook. He stated that he appreciated all the work Cook and his team have put together to create a product that saves lives.

Both emails got a quick response from Tim Cook who thanked both Michael Gallegos and Christopher Oakley for sharing their stories. He also expressed his happiness that both men were kept alive through the treatment that they received.

Apple said earlier today that it will stop selling the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 in the United States from December 21. The sources who talked to Bloomberg stated that engineers are reportedly changing how oxygen saturation is calculated and how users receive the data. These adjustments are likely to eliminate technology that is purportedly infringing on Masimo patents.

This action aligns with Apple’s announcement that it is “pursuing a range of legal and technical options” to ensure that sales of Apple Watch can get back on track as quickly as feasible. Hardware covered by Masimo’s patents powers the Apple Watch blood oxygen sensor, and Masimo thinks that a software update won’t be sufficient to resolve the patent infringements. According to Masimo, “the hardware needs to change,” as reported by Bloomberg.

However, the company appears to believe that a software-based solution will be enough, as a representative informed Bloomberg that it is working on submitting a workaround. Given that Apple will need to test the modifications, it seems doubtful that a software update will be released before the end of sales. Updates to the hardware would take at least a few months.

Now, the company has taken the initiative to prepare for compliance with the ITC’s ruling, even if the White House has until December 25 to decide. The Watch Series 9 and the Watch Ultra 2 will no longer be available for purchase at stores in the US from December 21 at 2:00 PM Pacific Time. Additionally, online sales will also stop after December 24.

However, The Apple Watch SE will still be available in other nations in addition to the Apple Watch as it is not equipped with a blood oxygen sensor. The business plans to appeal the ITC’s decision to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit on December 26 if a motion to reconsider is not given.

A Presidential Review Period is in progress regarding an order from the U.S. International Trade Commission on a technical intellectual property dispute pertaining to Apple Watch devices containing the Blood Oxygen feature. While the review period will not end until December 25, Apple is preemptively taking steps to comply should the ruling stand. This includes pausing sales of the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 from Apple.com starting December 21, and from Apple retail locations after December 24. The decision does not impact sales of the devices in other countries at this time.

Apple's teams work tirelessly to create products and services that empower users with industry-leading health, wellness, and safety features. Apple strongly disagrees with the order and is pursuing a range of legal and technical options to ensure that Apple Watch is available to customers. Should the order stand, Apple will continue to take all measures to return Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 to customers in the U.S. as soon as possible.

Apple’s plans to introduce a micro-LED Apple Watch have been delayed due to manufacturing challenges, according to a new supply chain report. As per the report, LG, Apple’s main supplier for microLED displays, is working hard to make microLED panel production more feasible.

TrendForce, a market research firm, said last month that the delay is due to challenges in the complex manufacturing process. The original release date was 2025.

Apple Watch with Micro-LED Display Delayed

MicroLED displays are a promising new display technology. However, one of the main challenges to mass production is the high cost, which is due in part to low yields. The microscopic size of the LEDs makes the manufacturing process of Micro-LED displays more complex, which results in a significant number of defective units.

As mentioned earlier, LG is said to be working to address this issue. The company has reportedly found a solution to rectify the defects in microLED panels, but implementing this fix is currently expensive. 

In a bid to optimize the production processes, LG has taken steps to secure 14 patents from the Taiwanese company Ultra Display Technology. These patents, all granted in the United States, are concentrated on refining the positioning of microLED chips for higher yields.

The woman hopes her story will convince others to consider availing themselves of technology for enhanced health and fitness. She says the Apple Watch can be helpful in a health sense. She was able to discover that she had a blood clotting disorder that never manifested itself before the incident. The Apple Watch can measure your heart rate for 24 hours and it can recognize irregular patterns when the user is asleep. If the heart rate is elevated during rest periods, the smartwatch can trigger an alert to the user.

Watkins was roused from her sleep by the Apple Watch’s alert of a heart rate of 178 beats per minute. She then sought medical attention where she was told that she had a condition called saddle pulmonary embolism.

The condition limits blood flow throw both lungs and a 50% fatality rate is reported for the ailment. Watkins was able to get treatment and she is happy that her sleep was routed by the smartwatch on that day. She feels that the outcome could have been fatal if she was not wearing a smartwatch.

The Apple Watch has already been accredited for helping save many lives over the last couple of years. And just recently, another life was possibly saved after the smartwatch helped a female identify a potentially life threatening health issue.

Apple Watch notified the woman regarding her unusual heartbeat

The story this time is about a 29 year old Kimmie Watkins from Ohio, US. She recently talked about her ordeal and shared how the Cupertino based giant’s Watch helped save her life. Kimmie said that she had been feeling lightheaded and tired quite often but couldn’t pinpoint the actual reason. She decided to simply sleep it off, thinking it was just caused by her skipping meals. On the other hand, the Apple Watch remained vigilant and mapped her heartbeat throughout her nap.

After around 90 minutes, she was awoken to an alert which notified her that her heartbeat had been too high for an extended period of time. In other words, there was something wrong with her. The Watch tracked a heart rate spike of up to 178 beats per minute, which is quite high for someone at rest and not in the middle of an intense physical activity. Following this warning, Watkins sought medical help and the doctors revealed that she had a saddle pulmonary embolism (SPE).

Simply put, its a medical condition that is said to have a fatality rate of 50 percent and is basically a blood clot. According to Dr. Richard Becker, a cardiologist at the University of Cincinnati’s College of Medicine, this was the “most severe and life threatening of all because it’s a blood clot that saddles both the blood vessel to the right lung and to the left lung.” Watkins is currently under treatment and is on the road to recovery. Back in October 2022, Apple Watch had helped save a 12 year old girl from cancer, and earlier this year, a man was saved a from a potentially life threatening internal bleeding as well.
