Meizu has officially released a new Developer version of its Flyme interface, version 6.7.8.22, with a couple of new features. The most spectacular feature which the new update brings is a kernel upgrade of some models to Android 7.0/7.1 Nougat.

Meizu Flyme 6 was initially released based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow at a time Android Nougat was already launched and now an update to Android Nougat is coming when Google just released Android 8.0 Oreo. However, good thing it is coming but it will only be available for the Meizu Pro 6 Plus, Pro 6, Pro 6s, Pro 5, MX6, Meizu E, M3 Max, M5 Note and M3 Note. It could be noticed that all the models are smartphones released within the last two years. The oldest is the Pro 5 released in September 2015 but the company did not reveal the reason for this.

Other models such as the MX5, MX4, MX4 Pro, Meizu X, Meizu U20, U10, and several others also got upgraded to the same Flyme 6.7.8.22 Developer ROM but their System kernel was not upgraded to Android Nougat.

The new Android 7.0 / 7.1 kernel brings some improvements in the system update speed and application installation speed. It also brings onboard several changes to the camera, system, connectivity, and basic settings of the Flyme OS including support for a number of new features such as payment authorization for several services via the fingerprint sensor, among others. Do note that this is the developer ROM, so all the features may not be fully functional on all the models but Meizu is working to fix all bugs before rolling out a Stable ROM.

Not too long after we reported that the ZUK Edge was being given a lifeline in form of Meizu’s Flyme 6 OS, another ailing model has got a similar treatment. Surprisingly, it is another Lenovo model, this time around the Moto models. Meizu has revealed that its developers have concluded works on a Flyme 6 third party ROM that is compatible with the Moto X Style, Moto X Pro which isthe international version of the Nexus 6,. Other compatible models include the Moto X Force, and Moto X 2014 (second gen Moto X).

Meizu only last month hinted that it would be making its Flyme 6 OS available for use on third party smartphones with the OnePlus 3T, ZUK Z2, Nexus 6P and a few others joining the early birds. Although Moto phones come with their own custom UI, the features on the Moto UI isn’t up to that on the Flyme OS. The Flyme OS is outed as one of the best custom ROM around.

On its part, the Flyme 6 comes with a number of cool features which includes a new search feature which allows users to search for answers on the internet via their phone’s camera. Meizu has released a new update to its Flyme 6 OS ushering in the Flyme 6.1.0.0A version. The update brings a number of new features to some specific models like the Meizu Pro 6 Plus, Pro 6, Pro 6s, Pro5, MX4 Pro, MX6, MX4, M5 Note, M3 Note, M2 Note, M1 Note, U20, U20, M3X and more. The newly launched Meizu E2 is not included in the update at its own update is expected in mid-August.

The new update will start pushing to the models via OTA update but the OTA update will not push to the Developer version and version version. The update is available for download from the Flyme official website. The next developer version is scheduled for release in mid-June. Also, users of models running on Flyme 4, Flyme 4.5 will need to upgrade to Flyme 5 in order to receive the new version by OTA push.

The highlights of the new functions which the new version brings to the table includes that the screen recording function now supports sound unlike befor when it only supported video recording without sound. The update also optimise the system stability and power consumption. Other features include April 2017 Android Security Patch applied, deleting of screenshots after being shared and optimise the quality of Wechat window video. Meizu has announced the release of its Flyme 6 OS for third-party models just as the company was tipped to do. The company has officially revealed the list of models that would support the package and really, it is a surprise package. The first batch of the models includes the OnePlus 3T just as rumoured. Smartphone models like the Nexus 6P, ZUK Z2, Xiaomi Mi 3, Mi Note (high-end version). Redmi Note 3 (high-end version), Redmi Note 2, Nexus 6 and several other models are also among the first batch.

Already, firmware for eight different models is available for download on the Meizu Flyme website. These eight models are the first batch of a long list of devices can be flashed to the Flyme 6 ROM. Here’s a list of the models and the download link. Installation is by flash recovery and there is a tutorial up on the blog. However, as you’d know by now, flash recovery is not something you do without prior knowledge or else you could permanently brick your device.

It is interesting to note that most of the models on the list are powered by a Qualcomm processor at a time Meizu uses MediaTek chip on its models. It is possible Meizu is trying to consolidate on its recent settlement with Qualcomm with this move. It could also be due to the superior firepower of the Qualcomm chip which would allow the Flyme OS lag on the models it is flash into.

Meizu last week announced that it is opening up its Flyme 6 interface so that it can be installed on third-party smartphones bringing the intuitive skin and features of its latest Flyme OS  which is based on Android Marshmallow. Although the company stated that it will officially announce the list of models that would be supported due to compatibility issues, rumours are making the round that the OnePlus 3T will be among the models which would get to be able to use the Flyme 6.

Users in the OnePlus community are said to have received the Meizu Flyme 6 test news that the OnePlus 3T will be opened for Flyme 6 beta tomorrow by 10 AM. This would make the OP3T the first third-party smartphone to get the Flyme 6 if it turns out to be true. That would likely be officially known in a couple of hours from now when Meizu is expected to make the announcement.

Meizu has announced via a Weibo post that the latest version of its custom OS, Flyme 6 has now been adapted for use by other phone models and the company would be releasing the list of supported models on May 9. Already, the company has made the Android Marshmallow with Flyme overlay available on file sharing website Github.

It is not uncommon for custom ROM developers to adapt their ROM for third-party brands. Xiaomi currently does that for its MIUI ROM. The Flyme code can be injected into the native system’s framework and can enable the phone’s user to run their device entirely on Flyme 6 or enable some Flyme features on their devices. However, in this case, developers may need to independently adapt and continue to maintain and ensure synchronization updates for their our models.

Meizu announced a new version of its Flyme OS last year. Two months later, a stable version was released for eligible devices. Today, a new update for Flyme 6 has been released and it brings a number of new features.

The major feature in the update is the new screen recorder which has been updated to version 2.0. Previously, users could only record without any accompanying sound but the new update now records audio alongside the video.

Other features in the new Flyme update includes a new file management system, an improved update system that guides you in case you wish to downgrade your phone or switch from a beta version to a stable version of the OS.

Meizu has also removed the pop up reminder that comes up on your screen when the battery level is less than 30%. Instead of interrupting what you are doing, the system automatically switches to power saving mode.

Meizu announced a new version of its own android based OS during the launch of the Meizu M5 Note. The new OS called Flyme 6 will be coming out of closed beta tomorrow and in addition to the numerous new features already listed, a new feature called Time Machine will be making its way to the OS.

According to Meizu, Time Machine will let users retrieve accidentally deleted contacts. The feature will let you access deleted contacts data as far back as two years (the data starts recording from the day you start using the feature). So two years from now, you should still be able to access contacts deleted between now and December, 2018. To make use of the feature, users will have to got to Settings > Data Cloud Sync > Time Machine.

Meizu also says they have optimized the contacts synchronization speed by up to 65% and reduced traffic consumption by up to 66%. So a 300 contact phone-book should synchronize in about 9 seconds.

The advent of Chinese phones changed the smartphone market in no small way. Starting first as shameless rip-offs of other popular brands, they have now evolved into more refined devices that boast important features missing on the brands they used to imitate in the past. Most, if not all of these features are software-based and are built into the UI of each manufacturer.

Xiaomi’s MIUI is in its eight iteration already and offers tons of features but how does it compare against Meizu’s recently announced Flyme 6 UI or Huawei’s EMUI 5? Can anyone of them even stand against Smartisan OS 3.0?

Home Screen

All four UIs lack an app drawer by default, leaving you with an homescreen packed full with all your apps. If you are coming from an iPhone this shouldn’t be an issue for you, however those switching from Samsung, LG, Motorola, Nexus or HTC phones will have a hard time adapting to this and might be forced to install a launcher with an app drawer. However, EMUI 5 has an additional setting that lets you choose app drawer mode.

From the image below, there is no much difference between MIUI and EMUI apart from the bottom row of icons which are lower in MIUI and still have texts beneath them. For Flyme OS, the icons are a bit bigger and are more spaced, making them cover more than half of the whole screen.

Smartisan OS on the hand differs completely, as its homescreen is filled with apps that reach the top of the screen, making it feel like you are still using an iPhone.

Another major difference is that while the other three UIs have texts beneath their icons, Smartisan OS gives you the option to toggle it on or off. This gives it a neater and more matured look compared to the other three.

Notification Drawer/Quick Settings Menu

The notification drawer and quick settings menu differ for each UI. Flyme 6 and MIUI 8 both use a single page system where you have the quick settings shortcuts at the top and notifications at the bottom. MIUI 8 is however more colorful and has more features such as a search box at the top.

EMUI and Smartisan OS use a two-page system which presents your notifications on one page and quick settings shortcuts on the other.  You can flip between both pages via a single tap.

Recent Apps Menu

The recent apps interface is another place where the UIs are different. Flyme 6 uses a 3D carousel design to list the recently opened apps and Smartisan OS uses a flat card system (four apps per screen). MIUI 8 and EMUI 5 both use the same 2D flat design but in a different way. Instead of grouping them in fours like you have in Smartisan OS, they are arranged in a horizontal line which you can scroll through. MIUI 8 even has the option to shrink the cards into small icons in case you do not want to get a preview of what is currently running in each app.

Special Features

Each UI has a unique feature of its own. Flyme 6 lets you customize what mode (a total of three modes) your phone unlocks to depending on the fingerprint you use to unlock the phone. MIUI on the other hand let’s you use two accounts for the same app on a single device, so you can have two Whatsapp accounts, two Facebook accounts, and two twitter accounts and so on and so forth. EMUI 5 does the same (App Twin) but is limited to only Whatsapp and Facebook.

MIUI 8 also let’s you create a second space on your phone which you can switch to with the tap of a button. This second space can consist of apps you use for work and you can customize what apps and files you want to show up from the main space.

EMUI’s version of second space is called PrivateSpace and works more or less the same way as that of MIUI 8. While split-screen multi-tasking just came to stock android, it’s been available on some other Android UIs like Samsung’s TouchWiz and now, EMUI 5. We believe the split-screen feature will be available to all the devices getting the EMUI update irrespective of their android version.

Smartisan OS has its own special features too. There is a built-in screen recorder which even lets you annotate the video while recording. You can also use the front facing camera to record yourself in case you are making a tutorial video. Smartisan OS also has a feature called Big Bang which is basically like Google’s Now on Tap though not as feature rich.

Meizu announced the sixth iteration of its Flyme OS during the launch of the Meizu X phone. Although it is still in a closed beta stage, some early testers already have their hands on it and have decided to share some of the new features of the new Flyme 6 OS.

According to the testers, there is no much difference in the way the new Meizu OS looks. However there are lots of big changes in how it functions.

The first on the list is the new feature of the fingerprint scanner which unlocks the phone into any of three preset modes such as normal mode, guest mode, and privacy mode. What Meizu has done here is take advantage of the multiple fingerprints unlock feature and extra functionality. So you can register your left thumb to unlock the phone into guest mode; your left forefinger into private mode, and the right forefinger unlocks the phone into normal mode. There is still child mode included too and the option to hide apps.

Flyme 6 OS now has a new artificial intelligence system called One Mind which studies the habits of the users after a while and speeds up the launching of frequently used apps by up to 200%.

The new OS also allows you to monitor secure payments carried out on the device. There is remote assistance functionality, cloud services management, screen recording, and a bunch of new camera features.

Flyme 6 will be available on more than 20 devices and should be released as an open beta on December 20.

Among the series of teasers Meizu employed in sending out invites for its upcoming November 30 conference, there is one containing the “Make 6 Great Again” mantra. This is in reference to the release of a new Flyme 6 operating system. The new user interface would probably be pre-installed on the Meizu X which would be announced same day.

Now, images of the Flyme 6 user interface have leaked online revealing the refreshing looks of the new operating system which would likely be based on Android Marshmallow. The images shows the Flyme 6 would bring an entirely different visual experience. There is a change in the looks of the status bar and it now looks similar to that of Apple’s iOS 10. The music player and voice assistant interfaces are also shown to have gotten new looks.

The images are just two, so its likely the Flyme 6 would adopt an entirely different look in many aspects. We’d get to see that when the OS is unveiled.
