Galaxy Ring Battery Issue Reportedly Leads to an Emergency Room Visit

Over the last couple of months, the Samsung Galaxy Ring users have reported on battery related issues they’ve been facing. Many of the complaints were related to the battery life of the South Korean tech giant’s first smart ring. But now, the battery issue has even led to a big safety risk. Daniel from Zone of Tech took to X (formerly Twitter) to talk about his unfortunate ordeal with the Galaxy Ring.

Right before he was going to board a flight, his Galaxy Ring had its battery start swelling up. Due to this, he was forced to cancel his flight. However, because of the swollen cell in the ring, Daniel was unable to remove it. While a typical ring can be cut out, you can’t do the same for a smart ring since it houses a battery cell. These can quickly catch fire if the battery wall is breached. So he promptly went to the emergency room in the hospital to find a solution that doesn’t involve cutting.

Daniel stated that the swollen ring stuck on his finger was quite painful, and the bulge made it hard to remove. Such an incident could lead to big health risks, so Samsung should have some form of fail safe or an easier method of removing the ring in such situations.

This is a great way of keeping track of your health, which suits those who do not prefer a smartwatch. However, the patent hints that Samsung might be bringing additional functionality to this formula soon. The patent description and sketches show a smart ring user interacting with other connected devices wireless. It appears that this future Galaxy Ring can communicate between two devices, with the sketches showing a laptop and a tablet.

The patented smart ring can be seen as capable of moving things from one display to another. This functions similar to Apple’s connected ecosystem. Samsung’s S Pen also offered similar functionality, but this appears to be more seamless, especially thanks to the intuitive design of the Galaxy Ring. Samsung expanded its wearable lineup this summer by introducing the Galaxy Ring. As expected, the Ring packs a lot of technology into a small form factor. However, in doing so, it seems that Samsung may not have prioritized making it repairable.

The team at iFixit recently conducted a teardown of the Galaxy Ring and confirmed that if the device gets damaged, it can’t be repaired.

Samsung has taken several steps to make its first smart ring durable. The Galaxy Ring boasts an IP68 water and dust resistance rating, can withstand deep water pressure, and features a Grade 5 titanium frame for scratch and impact protection. 

While all of this is impressive and serves its purpose well, one component that inevitably degrades over time is the battery. And unfortunately, replacing the Galaxy Ring’s battery is a near-impossible feat. The battery is sealed within the device, so it’s inaccessible without destroying the ring itself.

iFixit also shared a computed tomography (CT) scan of the ring, revealing just how tightly packed the internal components are. The long strip on the right side is the battery. Due to its lack of repairability, every Galaxy Ring Samsung sells will eventually become e-waste after its limited lifespan.

Despite its non-repairable nature, the Galaxy Ring packs a surprising amount of tech into its compact form. It features the Nordic Semiconductor nRF5340 system on a chip that has 2x Arm Cortex-M33 cores, paired with 512 KB RAM, 1 MB storage as well as Bluetooth 5.4 connectivity.

Additionally, there’s a tiny wireless charging coil and a battery pack next to it and an NFC tag as well as an antenna for transferring signal between the ring and your paired smartphone.

Samsung has since updated its official website to reflect this broader compatibility, indicating that the company is open to expanding the reach of its innovative wearable. However, iOS users will have to wait a bit longer, as the Galaxy Ring currently does not support iPhones.

That is, Samsung is advising against wearing the Galaxy Ring in certain situations or near specific objects.

According to Samsung’s official support page, the wearable should be kept away from magnets. The page specifically states that “certain features, like step counting, may not work properly if you’re holding a magnet or a magnetic object in the hand wearing the ring.” So, if you work around magnetic fields or simply enjoy playing with fridge magnets, take note of this.

Samsung also recommends removing the Galaxy Ring during weightlifting and other exercises involving machines. The reasoning is twofold: to protect the ring itself and to prevent hand injuries. 

The support page mentions that wearing the ring during weightlifting “could cause hand injuries,” implying that the ring might get caught or damaged during strenuous exercise.

It’s worth noting that similar recommendations have been made for other wearable rings, such as the Oura ring. According to Tech Radar, the Oura ring support page doesn’t explicitly mention magnets, but it does recommend “considering removing” the ring in situations with high friction, including weightlifting.

The Samsung Galaxy Ring, first teased in January, is set for a full launch on July 10th. While details remain hush-hush, a new leak may have shed light on the price of the upcoming wearable.

According to Dealabs, the Galaxy Ring could cost €449 in France. Converted, this translates to approximately $485, £380, and AU$720.

For context, the popular Oura Ring starts at $299, with some models reaching similar price points to the leaked Galaxy Ring. However, Samsung will need a compelling rationale to justify such a price, especially considering there will also be an additional subscription service that could further increase the cost.

The leak also confirms that the ring will be available in France in three colors — black, silver, and gold — and across nine sizes, from US standard 5 to 13. There are also reports suggesting that sizes will be directly proportional to battery meaning users with larger fingers will have a better battery life.

The source also claims that the Galaxy Ring will be on shelves in France starting July 19, following its official unveiling on July 10th. It’s unclear whether this means a nine-day pre-order window or if pre-orders will start on July 19, but a pre-order period beginning on July 10th seems more plausible.

The report doesn’t delve into specifics about the subscription model but know that it’s not a new approach, as Oura, Fitbit, and Apple also offer subscription models for their wearables. 

Such subscriptions often unlock additional health tracking features and detailed analysis. Whether the subscription cost is included in the rumored €449 price remains uncertain.

Samsung is about to launch a wearable smart ring on the upcoming Galaxy Unpacked event, scheduled for July 10. However, a new patent application hints that Samsung is working on another smart wearable ring that has a different design. The patent application was filed at the United States Patent Application Publication in May 2024.

The second-generation Galaxy Ring could pack a display

As you can see from the image above, the new smart ring (probably the second generation Galaxy Ring) will have a flat side on the outer layer while the inner layer will be circular. It is speculated that the flat side of the outer layer will equip a display while the inner side will house the sensors. One of the images also support this speculation, which you can see below.

Additionally, it’s rumored that the second-generation ring could come with two displays: one for app icons and another for showing content or information when an app icon is clicked. Both screens would function together based on user input. However, the patent application images do not explicitly show multiple displays on the device.

The display could help you easily check some key information such as stats of workouts, and heartbeat rate without having to touch your phone. It may inform you about incoming calls and notifications.

It’s also clear from the images that the second-generation ring could have significantly higher internal volume as compared to the first-generation Galaxy Ring. It hints that the next ring will have more resources inside (such as higher battery capacity or additional sensors) for improved functionality.

According to the patent listing, the Galaxy Ring will support Galvanic Skin Response (GSR), SPO2, PPG, and ECG measurement. It will also equip a temperature sensor, acceleration sensor, fingerprint sensor, and a switch. The use of more sensors could be a reason behind increasing the internal volume of the device.

Nonetheless, this device will still need to communicate with the phone and will likely use Bluetooth the connectivity. It’s also speculated that the device could support Wi-Fi, NFC, and MST (magnetic secure transmission) for payments.

According to the patent, this second-generation ring will also come in multiple sizes. There will be 27 ring sizes in South Korea and 65 sizes in the US. Speaking of the launch of the product, it’s still in its early development stage, and whether the company will release the product or not depends on the success of the development. Samsung‘s upcoming Galaxy Ring is expected to be unveiled on July 10th at their Unpacked event. While the company has revealed the design of the wearable, details on its health-tracking features are still limited.

However, an APK teardown of the latest Samsung Health app by Android Authority has shed some light on the Galaxy Ring’s features.

Unsurprisingly, basic health tracking will be a core function. Users will be able to monitor heart rate and stress levels and can view this data directly within the Samsung Health app which has dedicated interfaces for data visualization.

In addition to basic tracking, the Galaxy Ring will also offer more advanced health metrics. The app hints at features like skin temperature measurement and menstrual cycle prediction.

Interestingly, the Galaxy Ring will also be able to detect snores. However, similar to the Galaxy Watch, it seems that you will need a nearby, charging phone.

Snore tracking on the Galaxy Watch uses the phone’s microphone to record audio and timestamps for snoring and heavy breathing events. The Galaxy Ring is expected to work in a similar manner.

That’s it in terms of health-tracking features. So far, we know that the Galaxy Ring will come in nine different sizes, ranging from 5 to 13, with battery capacity varying by size.

Rings in sizes 5 to 7 will have a 17 mAh battery, sizes 8 to 11 will have an 18.5 mAh battery, and the largest sizes, 12 and 13, will feature a 22.5 mAh battery.

Speaking of size, a report from May revealed that if you’re unsure about the perfect fit, Samsung might send you a sizing kit before you finalize your order.

This kit likely includes sample rings in standard US sizes, allowing you to determine which one fits best. Once you’ve found your ideal size, you’ll need to confirm it on the order page before receiving an email confirmation and shipment of your Galaxy Ring.

Samsung has finally confirmed that its next Galaxy Unpacked event will be held on July 10 globally.  The event will be held in Paris, France, and it will be livestreamed on Samsung’s website, Samsung Newsroom and Samsung’s YouTube channel at 3 p.m. CEST, 6 am. PDT, and 9am EDT.

The South Korean company has not confirmed the names of the devices to be unveiled at the next Galaxy Unpacked event. However, it has been confirmed that the new Galaxy Z series will be announced, along with the integration of AI throughout the entire Galaxy ecosystem. As per reports, the brand will announce as many as seven new devices through the July 10 event.

Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6

The Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 are most likely to be the star of the Galaxy Unpacked event. Both devices are expected to come equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy chipset. The Z Fold 6 is expected to boast a lighter and more durable design, potentially featuring a reduced weight compared to its predecessor. The leak comes from renowned tipster Ice Universe. Although he didn’t share much except the image, you can see that the case for the company’s smart ring adopts a fancier design and looks somewhat like a jewelry box.

Reportedly, the charging mechanism for the ring will be similar to the company’s available wireless earphones. However, it’s also possible that the new smart ring will charge wirelessly in the case. The case is also likely to support wireless charging.

According to a previous report, the Galaxy Ring has achieved 9 days of battery life in Samsung’s tests. Notably, different sizes of the ring will come with different battery capacities, and it’s not clear which size in the company’s tests ran 9 days on a single charge. According to the FCC listing of the smart ring, the battery capacity ranges from 17mAh to 22.5mAh.

Samsung has initiated a legal process to obtain a declaratory judgment of non-infringement, essentially seeking legal confirmation that their product (the Galaxy Ring) does not violate Oura’s patents. For those unfamiliar, the Finnish company Oura is one of the key players in the product category.

On page 3 of the suit, Samsung mentioned that they have completed the design of the Galaxy Ring and expect to begin mass production of the product by mid-June of this year. The document also notes that Samsung will make the product available in the US “in or around August of this year.” So we are only two months away from the release of the highly anticipated Galaxy Ring. The company has not revealed in which other countries it will make the new wearable ring available.

Samsung is expected to announce the Galaxy Ring alongside the 6th generation foldables in the upcoming Galaxy Unpacked event, which is reportedly scheduled for July. The company has a track record of announcing the foldables in July and releasing them in early August. So, the suit basically reaffirms the rumors that Samsung will announce the new wearable ring in its Galaxy Unpacked event.

The abilities of the Galaxy Ring are also revealed

The document also reveals some of the health-tracking capabilities of the Galaxy Ring. It notes “Building on its extensive investment in health and fitness tracking technology, including the Galaxy Watch and the Samsung Health app, the Galaxy Ring monitors heart rate, heart rate variability, blood oxygen, movement, and sleep to provide users valuable insights and offer guidance to improve their health and wellbeing.” The total health tracking system will also reportedly offer an “Energy Score” based on the recorded data.

Notably, Samsung may be reserving additional features for the announcement at the Galaxy Unpacked event.

The app has recently updated to a newer version, where Assemble Debug has found strings of code suggesting the development of the “lost mode” feature for the Galaxy Ring.

While the Galaxy Ring is reportedly designed for continuous usage, the Lost mode will still be a helpful feature if you accidentally misplace the ring. Nonetheless, the feature is currently under development and Samsung may or may not release the feature with the final product.

An existing product in the space, the Oura ring does not have a similar feature to help its user find the device. It only enters a Restricted Mode when someone attempts to pair with a new device. The mode allows the user to erase all the information from the ring through the Oura app on the linked device.

The Samsung Galaxy Ring is expected to launch at the company’s second major Unpacked event this year. The company teased the smart ring in January at MWC 2024, but many details about the wearable were still under wraps. Recently, however, an FCC filing has revealed some key aspects of the wearable.

The FCC documents confirm Samsung‘s earlier statement about offering the Galaxy Ring in nine different sizes, ranging from size 5 to size 13. Interestingly, the battery capacity of each ring will vary depending on the ring size. 

According to the filing, smaller rings (sizes 5 to 7) will pack a 17 mAh battery, while sizes 8 to 11 will boast a slightly larger 18.5 mAh battery. The largest rings sizes 12 and 13, will benefit from a more substantial 22.5 mAh battery.

While Samsung previously claimed a battery life of 5 to 9 days on a single charge. Larger rings are likely to achieve the higher end of that range due to their increased battery capacity. 

The FCC filing also revealed the model numbers associated with each ring size:

• SM-Q505: Size 5
• SM-Q506: Size 6
• SM-Q507: Size 7
• SM-Q508: Size 8
• SM-Q509: Size 9
• SM-Q500: Size 10
• SM-Q501: Size 11
• SM-Q502: Size 12

The ring will use Bluetooth Low Energy (LE) for connectivity with the phone. The filing shows the wearable in Black, but Samsung teased the wearable in gold and silver at MWC 2024. That could be the other color options. 

The FCC filing also includes a schematic of the charging cradle for the Galaxy Ring. However, it remains unclear whether different ring sizes will require specific cradles.

The Galaxy Z Flip 6 and the Galaxy Ring have surfaced on FCC listing with some key details. In addition, the upcoming flip phone has also appeared on the PSI Testing and Certification LTD database revealing battery information.

Galaxy Z Flip 6 details:

The listing of the phone (with model number SM-F741U) on the FCC database confirms the use of dual-cell batteries with EB-BF741ABY and EB-BF742ABY model numbers. On the other hand, the PSI listing confirms the battery capacities – 1097mAh and 2790mAh. So the total battery capacity is 3887mAh, which Samsung can market as a 4000mAh typical battery capacity.

For context, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 came with a 3591 mAh battery pack (971mAh + 2620mAh) which the company marketed as a 3700mAh battery.

Now we also know that the phone will support NFC and WiFi 6E, thanks to the FCC listing. Additionally, the UL Demko certification listing confirms that the Z Flip 6 will support the same 25W wired fast charging.

The phone will be powered by a Galaxy-branded Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset (with slightly different clock speeds) and will be paired with 8GB RAM.

Listing for the Galaxy Ring

According to the FCC listing, the Galaxy Ring (with the model number SM-Q503) will be available in sizes ranging from 5-12. 5-7 sizes will equip a 17 mAh battery, 8-11 will get an 18.5 mAh capacity, and the biggest one will equip a 22.5 mAh battery. It will support Bluetooth 5.4 and Bluetooth LE for power-efficient connectivity with your phone. The listing also includes real-life images of the ring from different angles, which you can see above.

As you might know, the Galaxy Ring is expected to be available in nine sizes. However, if you’re unsure about the perfect fit for your finger, Samsung might send you a sizing kit before finalizing your order as per the leaked material.

The kit presumably includes sample rings in standard US sizes, allowing you to determine which one fits your finger best. The leak though doesn’t clarify whether the Galaxy Ring is designed for specific fingers like the ring finger, or if it can be worn comfortably on other fingers too. 

Once you’ve determined your ideal size, you’ll need to confirm it on the order page before receiving an email confirmation and shipment of the Galaxy Ring.

For those who already know their ring size, the process seems more straightforward. You can apparently bypass the entire sizing step and directly order your preferred size without needing the kit.

So if you’re preparing to purchase the Ring, early preparation could be key for a smooth launch day purchase. Samsung hasn’t revealed the launch date of Galaxy Ring yet but it is expected to launch during the Unpacked event which is rumored on July 10.

The prices in other markets like the EU and UK could differ from the stated price band, according to the sources. The projected price of the Samsung Galaxy Ring is at par with that of some competing products already in the market. The Oura Ring, for example, is priced around $299.

As per the latest rumors from Android Authority, the Galaxy Ring will be offered with a subscription service. This will be similar to what is obtained with the Oura Ring, Apple, and Fitbit products. The monthly fee for the optional subscription will be less than $10. It remains to be seen the nature of the subscription service in an already highly competitive space for digital product subscriptions. According to the company’s statement, the ring will offer up to 9 days of usage on a single charge and is resistant to water and dust with its IP68 certification.

Of course, one of the most functional aspects, like other wearable smart devices, is notifications. The Galaxy Ring will notify you of incoming calls, messages, and notifications with vibrations. Although it’s uncertain if everyone wants a vibration on their finger every time they receive an email, we are sure it’s important for some. Additionally, it will have functions such as music control, presentation control, and interaction with voice assistants. The price of the Galaxy Ring has not been officially announced yet, but it is expected to be released in the fall.

Samsung Galaxy XR

Apple recently made a significant impact worldwide with its Vision Pro, which it launched a short while ago. People in many countries, including the United States, can be seen everywhere with this Mixed Reality headset. Of course, Samsung didn’t hesitate to respond, showcasing a headset named XR at MWC 2024.

The product was developed in collaboration with Samsung, Google, and Qualcomm. Although we may not know all the details, we can say that it will come with a micro OLED display and, in addition to 8 cameras, will feature a ToF sensor. Like the Vision Pro, it can be controlled through eye movements, voice commands, or hand gestures. Samsung has officially revealed its Galaxy Ring smart ring at Mobile World Conference 2024. Initially teased during Samsung’s Unpacked event in January, the Galaxy Ring is a health and wellness-focused wearable designed to take on competitors like the Oura Ring.

Features and Design

While Samsung initially shared a few details about the Galaxy Ring, the company has now provided more information. The ring features a minimalist yet substantial design and will be available in platinum silver, gold, and ceramic black color options. 

According to TheVerge, the ring feels light when worn and comes in sizes 5 to 13, labeled S to XL inside. The battery size also varies depending on the ring size, ranging from 14.5mAh to 21.5mAh.

The Galaxy Ring will include a suite of sensors for tracking various health metrics. While Samsung has yet to reveal the Galaxy Ring’s full sensor suite, they are partnering with Natural Cycles for fertility tracking, mirroring a key feature of the Oura Ring.  

You can also expect the usual health features like sleep tracking, heart rate tracking, step counts, and breathing patterns. Samsung says users will also receive personalized health advice based on their sleep data. 

Another unique feature is Samsung’s “My Vitality Score,” designed to measure alertness and provide insights into the wearer’s overall readiness. Feedback will come through “Booster Cards” with science-based tips incorporating sleep and other health data.

Availability, Pricing, and Compatibility

The Galaxy Ring will integrate with the existing Samsung Health ecosystem, including Galaxy Watch devices. While exact pricing remains unknown, the ring is scheduled for release later this year.  

Initially, the Galaxy Ring will be compatible exclusively with Samsung Galaxy smartphones. However, Samsung plans to expand compatibility to other Android devices and potentially iOS devices in the future.

In terms of appearance, the Galaxy Ring’s teaser suggests that it could be black in color. Samsung will confirm the technical details and availability of the Galaxy Ring later this year. It is expected to rival smart rings like Oura and Evie.

Samsung’s next major event this year will be the second Galaxy Unpacked event, which could be held in July for the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and the Galaxy Z Flip 6 foldable phones. There is a possibility that the Galaxy Ring may go official alongside the new foldables.

Samsung might be planning on launching brand new line of devices that diversify its wearable category outside of its Galaxy Watch series. The company is apparently working on an AR based Galaxy Glasses and even a Galaxy Ring that can track your health.

The South Korean tech has filed for two new trademark applications. These trademarks were filed for a Galaxy Ring and a pair of Galaxy Glasses. The upcoming glasses gadget could be similar to the rumored Apple AR/VR headset, meaning, it could also feature either mixed reality or extended reality headset, which was teased during the Galaxy Unpacked event at the beginning of this month.

Furthermore, the company has also been granted the Galaxy Ring trademark by KIPRIS (Korea Intellectual Property Rights Information Service) on February 23. The Galaxy Ring classifications decribes the products as a “smart device for measuring health indicators and/or sleep in the form of [a] ring.” Unfortunately, the KIPRIS application didn’t reveal any other finer details regarding this upcoming device apart from its name. Although, based on the description, we can assume that the Ring will simply monitor wearer’s health and physical activities similar to a smartwatch.

On the other hand, Samsung has officially unveiled that it is working on the XR (extended reality) headset at the Unpacked event at February 1. The brand is partnering with Google and Qualcomm to build this headset, and now, the KIPRIS filing does hint that the upcoming gadget’s name could be called “Galaxy Glasses.”
