Why Aluminum is a Better Fit for the iPhone 17 Pro

Apple’s return to aluminum for the iPhone 17 Pro addresses many of the issues titanium created. Aluminum conducts heat far better than titanium, making it a better choice for managing the heat generated by the new A19 Pro chip and the vapor chamber cooling system. This change improves thermal performance and allows Apple to include a larger battery.

Aluminum also reduces production complexity. It is easier to machine, faster to produce, and more cost-effective at scale. The material aligns better with Apple’s environmental goals, as aluminum has a smaller carbon footprint than titanium. Apple’s partnerships with low-carbon aluminum smelters and its efficient recycling processes make aluminum a sustainable choice for the company’s carbon neutrality targets.

Aluminum also enables new design possibilities. Unlike titanium, which limits anodization options, aluminum allows for a broader range of colors. The iPhone 17 Pro introduces new finishes, including dark blue and orange, which were not feasible with titanium. This change gives Apple more flexibility to appeal to users who value customization.

Was Titanium Ever Worth It?

Titanium provided real benefits, but they were marginal for most users. While it improved durability and reduced weight, these advantages mattered less to people who used protective cases. Titanium may have been marketed as a futuristic material, but its real-world impact was limited. Apple’s iPhone 15 led global smartphone sales in the third quarter of 2024, with the iPhone 15 Pro Max and iPhone 15 Pro close behind, based on data from Counterpoint Research. This quarter is notable as it’s the first time the Pro models made up half of all iPhone sales during a third quarter.

Samsung’s Galaxy S24 stayed in the top 10 for the third quarter in a row, and it’s the first time a Galaxy S model has been in the top 10 since 2018. Altogether, the top 10 models made up 19% of all smartphone sales worldwide in Q3 2024.

Apple held four of the top 10 spots, while Samsung had five, and Xiaomi held one. This lineup hasn’t changed much since last year, showing that consumer preferences are fairly steady.

One clear trend is the growing interest in high-end smartphones, as seen by the smaller gap between the base and Pro iPhone models. Apple’s marketing, payment options, and trade-in deals have helped make the latest iPhones more available to a wider range of buyers, especially in growing markets.

Samsung’s Galaxy S24 also saw good results, partly due to a focus on GenAI features that appealed to buyers. The Galaxy A series, known for its affordable pricing and long software support, took four spots in the top 10, mainly due to its popularity in growing markets and focus on affordable models.

Xiaomi’s Redmi 13C stayed in the top 10 because of its low price and better features compared to the earlier Redmi 12C model.

Overall, the iPhone 15 series led the global smartphone market in Q3 2024, driven by strong demand and new features. Samsung’s Galaxy S24 and Galaxy A series also performed well, helped by their brand reputation and range of products.

Apple has permanently slashed the prices of the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max for the first time in India. The Cupertino-based tech giant follows the tradition of discontinuing the flagship models with the launch of the new generation. The current generation is due to get their successors in September. The reduction in prices of the iPhone 15 Pro models is likely attributed to the import duty rate cut from 20 to 15 percent by the Indian government at the recently announced budget session. 

iPhone 15 Pro, Pro Max get a price cut in India

Apple has slashed the prices of the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max in India by Rs 6,000. This is applicable to all storage configurations of the device. The brand has not explicitly revealed the reason behind the price cut. The revised pricing is also visible on the company’s official website. It’s worth noting that the prices could be even lower at Apple Authorised Resellers and third-party stores. 

The iPhone 15 Pro now starts at Rs 1,29,800 for the base 128GB variant down from Rs 1,34,900. Meanwhile, the 256GB and 512GB are now available for Rs 1,39,800 and Rs 1,59,700 compared to their original retail prices of Rs 1,44,900 and Rs 1,64,900 respectively. The 1TB variant of the smartphone can be purchased at Rs 1,79,400 instead of Rs 1,84,900. 

As for the iPhone 15 Pro Max, the 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB configurations now retail at Rs 1,54,000, Rs 1,73,900, and Rs 1,93,500 respectively. They were previously available for Rs 1,59,900, Rs 1,79,900, and Rs 1,99,900. 

Going by the aforementioned revised pricing, the iPhone 15 Pro has become cheaper by up to Rs 5,500 whereas the prices of the Pro Max have dropped by up to Rs 6,000. 

Should you wait before purchasing the iPhone 15 Pro, Pro Max?

With the festive season around the corner, we would recommend holding off buying any iPhones even after the price cut. The devices could be even available for cheaper during the sale season along with lucrative bank offers. Many authorised resellers are selling the Pro models at a slightly cheaper price than Apple’s store and website. There could also be an exchange bonus with the trade-in value of your old iPhone depending on the retailer and the timing. Additionally, the iPhone 16’s launch in September means that the current-generation non-Pro models will also get an official price cut.

One of the noteworthy features in the new update is the introduction of more charging limit options for iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro users. In addition to the existing 80% limit aimed at extending battery lifespan, users can now choose from 85%, 90%, and 95% limits through a convenient slider control.

Previously, iPhone 14 Pro and earlier models were limited to the single 80% charging limit option. It’s important to note that this expanded charging limit feature remains exclusive to the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro series for now.

Apple also released the developer preview beta update (internal version number: 22A5282m) for iPhone users today. The public beta is expected to arrive next month, with the full system rollout planned for this fall.

Reliable Apple leaker Majin Bu is back again with a new leak of the iPhone 16 Pro, this time comparing it against the 15 Pro. 

The tipster has shared new images of a dummy iPhone 16 Pro against the 15 Pro and the most noticeable difference between the two models appears to be the screen size.

The iPhone 16 Pro is expected to boast a 6.3-inch display compared to the 6.1-inch offering on the iPhone 15 Pro. While the increase isn’t drastic, it should provide a slightly more expansive viewing experience.

Previous leaks also suggest slimmer bezels for the iPhone 16 Pro, thanks to a rumored Border Reduction Structure (BRS) technology. However, since the leaked dummy doesn’t have a functional screen, it’s impossible to confirm this detail definitively.

The camera system seems to be another key area of improvement. The iPhone 16 Pro is rumored to sport a bigger sensor compared to the iPhone 15 Pro.

More significantly, the leaks point towards the inclusion of two new cameras: a 12MP periscope telephoto lens with 5x optical zoom (borrowed from the iPhone 15 Pro Max) and a 48MP ultrawide camera. These upgrades may propel the iPhone 16 Pro to the top of the best camera phone lists for 2024.

The leaked images also reveal a dedicated capture button, a rumored feature that has been gaining traction. This button is expected to combine a physical press with touch sensitivity, mimicking the experience of a traditional camera shutter button. It might even offer additional functionality like zoom control.

A new rumor from Weibo tipster Instant Digital claims that the iPhone 16 Pro will offer a brighter display as compared to the iPhone 15 Pro. According to the leak, the manual or typical peak brightness will be 1200 nits, which is 20% higher as compared to the 1000 nits rating of the iPhone 15 Pro.

The leak also claims that the phone will offer 1600 nits of “excitation” brightness. It is a bit confusing as both the iPhone 14 Pro and 15 Pro already go up to 2000 nits in High Brightness Mode (HBM). As 9to5Mac noted, the iPhone 15 Pro hits 1600 nits of peak brightness while showing HDR content. If that’s true, then the “excitation 1600 nit” could refer to the maximum brightness while displaying HDR content, meaning it stays the same.

The tipster Instant Digital reportedly has a mixed track record for Apple-related rumors. He has reportedly provided accurate information a couple of times in the past, which includes the launch timeline of last year’s Yellow iPhone 14, the frosted back glass of the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus, the Apple Watch Series 8 being a minor refresh, and more, support for Spatial Video in iPhone 15 Pro, and more.

For those unfamiliar, modern smartphones are programmed to hit different peak brightness levels based on different lighting conditions. While there can be different terms, the concept is pretty simple. The “Manual” or typical peak brightness refers to the max brightness that the phone will hit in indoor (not too bright) lighting conditions. The next is HBM (High Brightness Mode) which allows a higher brightness in strong outdoor lighting conditions. In addition to all these, some modern smartphones enable a crazy high “local peak brightness” for HDR content. In this case, only a small portion of the display reaches the high brightness level based on the content.

It’s not entirely clear what the term “excitation 1600” refers to in this leak. Nevertheless, the manual peak brightness, which has now been increased, remains practical for most of the time.

Aside from the flagship Panther Gold 18K, other models in the collection start at more accessible price points, with the Wonderful Orchid iPhone 15 Pro beginning at $9,630. Each purchase from the “Garden of Eden” collection comes with a complimentary heart-shaped AirTag, which can also be bought separately as a fashionable accessory for bags.

These models are all Limited Edition, with the Panther Gold 18K variant having only 14 units available, while the other models are limited to 99 units each.

Caviar, known for its extravagant craftsmanship, launched several distinctive products earlier. MrMacRight conducted performance tests comparing the iPhone 15 Pro, M1 iPad, and M2 iPad with a focus on “Resident Evil 4: Remastered.” The results, as uploaded in a video, indicate that the iPhone 15 Pro struggled to deliver a satisfactory gaming performance. The game, running at a resolution of 1560×720 with MetalFX sharpening technology enabled, consistently fell short of the capped 30 FPS (frames per second) on iOS.

While simpler scenes maintained a relatively stable frame rate, reaching close to 30 FPS, more intense scenarios such as combat caused a significant drop, plunging below 25 FPS and, in some instances, as low as 20 FPS. The graphics experienced severe stuttering during these moments, substantially impacting the overall gaming experience, particularly when using a sniper rifle.

In contrast to Resident Evil Village’s successful adaptation to the iPhone, the iOS version of Resident Evil 4 Remake lacks customizable settings and relies on preset graphics. Notably, the much-anticipated ray tracing feature, previously emphasized by Apple, is notably absent.

One prominent factor contributing to the iPhone 15 Pro’s subpar performance is likely heat dissipation issues. The device experienced rapid temperature increases during testing, triggering a reduction in frequency limit and exacerbating stuttering problems. Interestingly, while the iPhone 15 Pro faced challenges, the iPad Pro equipped with the M2 chip showcased superior performance. Running the game at a higher resolution with a more stable frame rate, the iPad Pro emerged as a more reliable option.

Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) reports a notable increase in panel shipments for the iPhone 15 series. The data reveals a 16% growth in panel deliveries compared to the iPhone 14 series during the same period through October and 21% growth than the corresponding period for the iPhone 13 in 2021.

Pro iPhone models’ dominance in panel shipments

DSCC’s findings point to the growing popularity of the iPhone 15 Pro models, particularly in October. The Pro variants secured an impressive 71% share of the total panels shipped, which is a significant increase from the 65% share recorded in September.

Notably, the higher starting price of the iPhone 15 Pro Max, priced at $1,199 with 256GB of storage, compared to its predecessor, the iPhone 14 Pro Max at $1,099 with 128GB of storage, has influenced the Average Selling Price (ASP). The ASP of the iPhone 15 series registers a 5% increase compared to the iPhone 14 series. This reflects a willingness among consumers to opt for higher-storage variants.

Samsung Display (SDC) continues to be a pivotal player in Apple‘s supply chain, contributing significantly to the iPhone 15 series panel shipments. Accounting for 81% of panels shipped from June to October, SDC remains a reliable and consistent supplier for Apple. This trend aligns with previous years where SDC played a key role in delivering panels for all four iPhone models in 2023, 2022, and 2021.

However, other panel suppliers have entered the scene lately. LG Display (LGD) started shipping displays for the iPhone 15 Pro Max in September, securing an 18% share for that model through October. Additionally, China’s BOE entered the supply chain last month, contributing with a 1% share for the iPhone 15 series.

Pro iPhones are getting increasingly popular among people

DSCC Senior Research Director, David Naranjo, highlights a trend where iPhone 15 Pro models are gaining increased popularity. Naranjo states, “Panel shipments for the iPhone 15 Pro models account for a higher share versus the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro models during the June – October period.” Cumulatively, the iPhone 15 Pro models hold a 64% share, surpassing the 54% share recorded for the iPhone 14 series and iPhone 13 series during the same period.

In summary, the latest data suggests an increased demand for the iPhone 15 series, driven by the popularity of its Pro models.

JD.com (Jingdong), a leading online retailer, is providing heft discounts on the Apple iPhone lineup. These limited-time offers are changing now and then.

Yesterday, the vanilla iPhone 15 with 256GB storage was discounted by ¥1,201 (~$165). But today’s deal has listed it at ¥851 (~$115) off, including the plus model. Similarly, there’s a ¥800 (~$110) discount on iPhone 15 variants as well.

These offers are available on a first-come first-serve basis. Also, not every color and storage version is discounted.

Caviar, a company known for its luxurious and unique custom smartphone designs, has announced a new collection of iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models inspired by outer space. The UFO collection features three designs: Alien, Astral, and Starship.

The Alien version features a titanium case with a stylized image of the Predator on the back. The back also incorporates fragments from the Murchison meteorite, a 7 billion-year-old meteorite that contains amino acids, the building blocks of life.

The Astral design features a titanium case with a stylized image of the Milky Way galaxy, made of 24-carat gold. The back also incorporates fragments from the Moon, Mars, and the Muonionalusta meteorite. The latter was found in Sweden in 1906 and is one of the oldest meteorites found to date.

The Starship design—as implied by the name—is inspired by a spaceship. The titanium back of the Starship model is adorned with a Star Destroyer from Star Wars, but perhaps to avoid royalties, it is simply referred to as a futuristic spaceship. As usual, the Caviar models are technically identical to the regular iPhone 15 Pro, although neither wireless charging nor MagSafe is likely to work due to the titanium back.

All three designs in the UFO collection are limited editions. The Alien design is limited to 15 units, the Astral design is limited to 24 units, and the Starship design is limited to 99 units. 

Caviar’s UFO collection is a unique and luxurious way to own an iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max. However, it is important to note that the prices are very high. The Alien design, for example, costs $9,000, which is more than three times the price of a standard iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Apple unveiled the iPhone 15 lineup last month. The latest iPhones have been on sale across the world for about four weeks now.

That’s enough time to understand the preliminary supply and demand of these smartphones. Thanks to an analyst, we have a brief idea regarding the performance of the latest iPhones in India.

Recently, Abhilash Kumar, an analyst at TechInsights, shared his thoughts on the supply and demand of the iPhone 15 series in India.

He says that as per estimates from TechInsights, out of all four new iPhones, the regular iPhone 15 is the highest-selling model in India. It is followed by the most expensive model — the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Whereas the iPhone 15 Plus has the least demand, however, it is well received compared to the iPhone 14 Plus whose release was delayed by a month last year. Thus, the iPhone 15 Pro sits comfortably in the third place.

Despite the huge demand, the waiting time for the base iPhone 15 is just about 1 week, as a result of local assembling earlier than the previous year. On the other hand, the waiting period for iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max is close to 3 weeks or more.

The iPhone Pro models are still exclusively manufactured in China. While the iPhone 15 Plus will reportedly be assembled in India starting this quarter.

Additionally, Abhilash notes that the demand for the iPhone 15 Pro Max is high in India though it is $720 more expensive than in the US. He mentions features like 5x tetraprism zoom camera, titanium frame, and USB Type-C as the driving factors.

In a brief conversation with us, Mr Kumar disclosed that he personally believes upper-class Indians as the target audience for the iPhone 15 Pro series. So a ₹20,000 (~$240) price difference between the Pro and Pro Max just for a longer-range zoom camera does not bother them. 

Hence, the most premium iPhone model is in more demand in the country, preceded by the standard model.

The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max have been criticized for their poor thermal management and throttling under sustained load. But a new software update from Apple seems to have fixed these issues. 

Apple released the iOS 17.0.3 update for new iPhones earlier this week. After testing the iPhone 15 Pro Max with this new iOS version, Chinese reviewer “Ah Zheng Is Very Hard” found that the phone’s performance and thermals have improved significantly.

For instance, the GPU score on Geekbench 6 increased from 27,163 on iOS 17.0.2 to 27,381 on iOS 17.0.3, while CPU scores largely remained the same. This may not seem like a big difference, but gaming performance has definitely improved.

Playing Honor of Kings on the iPhone 15 Pro Max with iOS 17.0.3 resulted in an average frame rate of 116.9 frames per second (FPS), while the same game yielded 105.4 FPS on iOS 17.0.2. Last year’s iPhone 14 Pro Max averages 103 FPS on iOS 17.0.3, for comparison.

Likewise, the phone’s temperature while playing the game also dropped around 1°C on the back and 0.6°C on the front. Other games, such as Genshin Impact and NiShuiHan, also ran cooler after the update, with temperature differences of over 2°C. However, the reviewer didn’t share the frame rate numbers for these two games.

Apple’s iOS 17.0.3 update seems to have improved the thermal management and performance of the iPhone 15 Pro / Pro Max. If you have an iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max, we certainly recommend updating to iOS 17.0.3 to enjoy the improved performance.

Apple seems to be expediting the process of solving issues that have been plaguing iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max variants since they went on sale. Owners all over the world have been reporting overheating and discoloration problems in their units. The Cupertino-based tech giant recently acknowledged the discoloration issue on this year’s Pro models. Now, in an interview with Forbes that is a major relief to users, Apple has revealed that a fix is incoming for the iPhone 15 Pro’s overheating problems. 

iPhone 15 Pro models getting a software update to fix overheating

The iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max are powered by Apple’s A17 Pro processor. It is a powerful chipset that comprises six-core CPU and a six-core GPU. The processor is also capable of running console-level games like Resident Evil, Assassin’s Creed Mirage, and more. 

The Cupertino-based tech giant added that it has identified a few things that cause the iPhone 15 Pro to become warmer than expected. It may run like that for the first few days after setting up or restoring because of the intense background activity. In simple words, the new device works overtime and over temperature to redownload all the data from the previous phone as fast as possible. 

That’s not all. Apple also added that it has spotted a bug in the iOS 17 that is impacting users and will be fixed via a software update. Additionally, any updates to third-party apps is also causing the system to overload.

Apple’s acknowledgment of overheating issues squashes any assumptions of any fault in the iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max. Users won’t have to face this for a long period. Apple also reassured that iPhones and iPad’s long-term performance won’t be affected as they have built-in protections to prevent overheating. 

If the temperature inside increases beyond the normal range, it protects its components by regulating the temperature.

Certainly, overheating is causing serious problems that hinder usage. Users complain about the phone entering protection mode and stopping the charge due to heat while charging. Of course, not every user experiences this issue. However, the number of complaints suggests there might be a problem with the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max models using the A17 Pro.

Ming-Chi Kuo, a well-respected Apple analyst, has weighed in on the overheating issues that some iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max users have been experiencing. He believes that the problem is more likely due to design compromises aimed at reducing the phone’s weight, rather than the new 3nm chip.

Specifically, Kuo points to the new titanium frame as a potential culprit. Titanium is lighter than stainless steel, but it is also a worse conductor of heat. This means that the iPhone 15’s new frame may not be able to dissipate heat as efficiently, which could lead to overheating. Kuo also suggests that using a case on the iPhone 15 could help to reduce overheating by providing a barrier between the phone’s frame and the user’s hand.

However, none of these are permanent solutions. Therefore, if you’ve purchased a new iPhone 15 Pro and are disappointed due to overheating issues, it would be beneficial to discuss this with Apple.

The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max have been plagued by overheating issues since their launch. But now users are reporting that their phones are also developing swollen batteries.

A Redditor with the username u/Leather_Cheerio_402 posted an image of their iPhone 15 Pro with a swollen battery that was causing the display to bulge. The user said that they had only had the phone for a few days and noticed the problem when they tried to install a case. 

"Picked up the phone on Monday and didn’t notice it then," the iPhone's owner explain in the Reddit post. "Put on a case a couple days ago and noticed it didn’t fit right. Was going order a new case but then realized the phone is actually swelling. Still works for now."

Perhaps the most interesting thing is, that they took the phone to an Apple Store but were told that they would need to take it back to Verizon, where they had purchased it. The iPhone community has criticized Apple for this response, saying that the Genius Bar should have been able to help the user, regardless of where they bought the phone.

Thankfully, the owner later mentioned in the thread that Verizon had agreed to swap the unit. This is the first case of an iPhone 15 Pro with a swollen battery and it is not clear what is causing the phone to develop swollen batteries. 

It is important to note that this is just one isolated incident and we do not know what caused the battery to swell. However, it is something to keep an eye on, especially if you are experiencing overheating issues with your iPhone 15 Pro. 

Also, if you notice that your iPhone 15 Pro battery is swollen, you must stop using it immediately and contact Apple or an authorized service provider. Swollen batteries can be dangerous and can cause fires.

Apple has implemented QR codes on iPhone screens to improve production quality and reduce material waste. These QR codes are engraved on each screen and enable Apple to closely monitor and evaluate the screen quality from suppliers Lens Technology and Biel Crystal. This innovation has reportedly reduced material waste from 30% to 10%, according to a report by The Information.

Implementing QR Codes to Scrutinize Production Quality

The tech giant has invested heavily in an innovative barcode initiative for its iPhone screens. They’ve placed two barcodes on each screen, one on the inner edge of the bezel and another tiny one measuring 0.2mm at a different location. This initiative has significantly reduced screen defects from 30% to 10%, leading to substantial cost savings for Apple. It has also given Apple better control over production quality, preventing suppliers from charging for supposed faulty screens.

Apple initially faced challenges when trying to attach QR codes to iPhone screens, as it weakened the displays and caused cracks during drop tests near the code location. However, they overcame these problems by developing new scanning methods and using microscopic lenses to avoid excessively deep etchings in the glass.

The QR codes on iPhone screens serve distinct purposes: the smaller one investigates screens reported as faulty, while the larger one identifies truly faulty displays, specifying the supplier and potentially narrowing down to specific production batches. This advancement has improved production quality and reduced waste, reflecting Apple’s strategic commitment to maintaining stringent quality control.

According to AppleInsider, both display firms have faced allegations of using forced labor, with Apple accused of not addressing these claims adequately. However, Apple continues to monitor the firms and their manufacturing issues.

Apple has officially confirmed that the iPhone 15 Pro models without a case may discolor the titanium frame but only temporarily. This is caused by the oil from the user’s skin. 

The Cupertino-based tech giant has updated its ‘Cleaning your iPhone’ support document on its official website. It includes instructions on how to clean, disinfect, and maintain the original look of the iPhone. Apple states that ‘the oil from your skin might temporarily alter the color of the outside band’ The company recommends users to wipe the frame with a soft, damp, and lint-free cloth to resotre the iPhone’s look. The device should also be cleaned immediately if it comes in contact with anything that causes stains or other damage. 

For those unaware, Apple sells a premium polishing cloth on its website. It is now compatible with the iPhone 15 series. The polishing cloth features a soft, non-abrasive material to eliminate discoloration. Additionally, it’s worth recommending iPhone 15 Pro users to avail a protective case for any discoloration issues as the device would be regularly exposed to the natural oil of the skin.

Apple recently introduced its iPhone 15 Pro series smartphones, featuring significant updates such as switching the stainless steel frame for a new titanium frame, a USB-C port, and a cutting-edge A17 Pro chip produced using TSMC’s advanced 3-nm process. However, reports from various sources have emerged, indicating that the iPhone 15 Pro series devices are experiencing severe overheating issues.

Initial speculations and explanations pointed towards TSMC’s challenges in achieving high yields with their 3nm chips as the root cause, suggesting that Apple had to settle for lower-quality chips for this year’s Pro lineup. Nevertheless, prominent industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has now indicated that the heating problems are unrelated to TSMC’s 3nm technology and are instead originating from a different source.

As per Kuo, “the primary cause of the heating issue is more likely the compromises made in the thermal system design to achieve a lighter weight such as the reduced heat dissipation area and the use of a titanium frame, which negatively impacts thermal efficiency.”

To elaborate further, it appears that Apple may have made trade-offs in the thermal system design to prevent the iPhone 15 Pro models from becoming too heavy. When compared to the previous iPhone 14 Pro model, Apple successfully reduced the weight of the iPhone 15 Pro model by 19 grams. The modifications to make the phone lighter could be responsible for the heating issue, especially when combined with the new titanium frame.

Kuo predicts that Apple will likely address the issue with a software update. However, this could result in a tradeoff, potentially reducing the performance of the Apple A17 Pro chip to keep temperatures in check. Kuo also cautions that if Apple doesn’t effectively tackle this problem, it could have a negative impact on iPhone 15 Pro series sales over its lifespan. The more pressing question, though, is how such an issue managed to slip through the prototype testing phase.

According to the market research company Counterpoint, Apple is forecasted to secure 7% of total smartphone sales in India between July and December 2023, which is an uptick from the 5% share observed in the previous six months. This doesn’t come as a surprise for the company. Last year, Apple opened physical stores in India and increased the number of marketing campaigns in the region. Given this, we can presume the US tech giant’s rise was anticipated.

Let’s also not forget that Apple is making efforts to produce in India. Thus, it wouldn’t be wrong to say that the brand’s value is on the rise in various categories. Apple’s newest iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models, set to be available for purchase on Friday. Nabila Popal, Research Director at IDC, emphasized the rapid growth of the premium smartphone domain in India, saying:

“The premium smartphone market in India has surged from a mere 0.8% of the entire market in 2019 to an impressive 6.1% in the first half of 2023. Apple’s triumphant run is majorly responsible for this upswing.”

In the segment dedicated to smartphones priced above $800, Apple is already reigns supreme in India. The company held an astounding 67% market share in the first half of the year, based on data from IDC. Samsung, one of its primary competitors, lagged behind with a 31% share. The iPhone 15 Pro is shaping up to be a powerful device, but it may come at a cost: overheating. New reports suggest that the phone’s A17 Pro chip, manufactured by TSMC is prone to overheating, even with regular use.

The A17 Pro is Apple’s and in fact world’s first 3nm chip. While this contributes to increased performance, it also seems to be causing the chip to overheat. Tipster Revegnus tweeted back in March that TSMC was struggling with the 3nm process, and as a result, Apple may have lowered its standards for the A17 Pro chip. This means that Apple may have accepted chips that otherwise would have been rejected.

Recently, Revegnus also shared a heatmap of the iPhone 15 Pro that shows the area around the A17 Pro chipset is unsurprisingly the hottest with temperatures reaching 48 degrees Celsius or 118.4 degrees Fahrenheit.

Youtuber Vadim Yuryev believes that Apple increased the wattage of the A17 Pro chip to achieve the benchmark results it wanted, but this increase in power consumption may lead to lower battery life and also cause the phone to heat up more quickly.

Since the iPhone 15 Pro heats up so quickly, it eventually throttles the phone’s performance to prevent damage to its internal components. Also, when the phone can get as hot as 118.4 degrees Fahrenheit it is hot enough to cause a first-degree burn. This is especially concerning because the iPhone 15 Pro doesn’t have a cooling solution.

Reviewer TechTablets has also confirmed that the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s A17 Pro throttling is bad. He says that it took just 2 minutes to lose almost 25% of performance, and after 20 minutes of GPU load, performance had dropped to almost 34%. However, he did note that the benchmark scores are rather impressive for a mobile chipset.

In short, the iPhone 15 Pro seems to be a powerful phone, but it may come at the cost of overheating and throttling. So if you’re planning to buy the latest Pro models, you may want to wait for more reviews to see how this affects the phone’s performance in real-world use.

The iPhone 15 Pro, which features a new titanium frame and curved edges, may be more prone to cracking than the iPhone 14 Pro, according to a drop test conducted by YouTuber Sam Kohl.

In the test, Kohl dropped the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro from a variety of heights and angles. While both phones survived the first few drops, the iPhone 15 Pro sustained major damage after being dropped from a height of six feet onto concrete. The phone’s display cracked and the back glass shattered, and it was no longer functional.

The iPhone 14 Pro, on the other hand, was still fully functional after being dropped from the same height. It sustained some minor scratches and dings, but the display and back glass were intact.

Kohl concluded that the iPhone 15 Pro’s curved edges may be more to blame for its fragility than the titanium frame. He suggests that folks who typically go caseless may want to reconsider with the new iPhone. You can watch the video below:

But it’s important to note that drop tests are not always scientific, and the results can vary depending on a number of factors, such as the surface the phone is dropped onto and the angle of impact. 

Drop tests, generally done by brands, are conducted in controlled conditions, with devices being dropped from different heights and onto a specific surface. Despite all the advertising claims about its titanium build quality and durability, the latest Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max has failed the durability test done by popular tech YouTuber, JerryRigEverything. The iPhone 15 Pro Max became the first iPhone to fail the durability test this decade. 

For context, the last iPhone which failed the durability test was the iPhone 6 Plus which was released back in 2014, which at that time, the iPhone 6 Plus was marred by scandals by the general public and tech enthusiasts alike, known most popularly as #BendGate, whereby the iPhone 6 Plus was known to bend in half in pockets or with extensive force applied due to its weaker aluminium build quality. 

Since the #BendGate fiasco, Apple has since improved the build quality of its iPhones with much stronger materials, such as the stronger 7000 series grade aluminium, surgical-grade stainless steel, and this year, Aerospace-grade Titanium for the iPhone 15 Pro series.

However, despite the claimed stronger materials in the iPhone 15 Pro series, in his latest YouTube video, JerryRigEverything has put the latest iPhone 15 Pro Max smartphone through his durability test gauntlet to find that the device is not as durable as the marketing would lead buyers to believe.

The iPhone 15 Pro Max passes the scratch test, which means that the Ceramic Shield glass on the iPhone starts scratching at Level 6 with deeper grooves on Level 7 on the Mohs scale of durability. However, upon starting the bend test, the iPhone 15 Pro Max immediately cracks in less than 5 seconds into the test with minimal pressure applied.

The crack happened immediately at the back of the device whereby the back glass is shown to be completely cracked with glass coming out. The camera island glass cracked in the test as well, showing that the rear glass panel is definitely not pressure-resistant in real-life scenarios such as accidentally dropping the iPhone onto the floor or sitting on the iPhone on the couch.

Jerry is shocked at the poor durability of the iPhone 15 Pro Max and concludes that the iPhone 15 Pro Max has indeed failed his durability test. He advises that if the iPhone 15 Pro Max glass does indeed crack, users should send the device for repair for 200 USD at the Apple Store.

He also tested the standard smaller iPhone 15 Pro at the end of the video, and thankfully, unlike its bigger sibling, the smaller iPhone 15 Pro passes his durability test unscathed with no defects or cracks.

The iPhone 15 hit store shelves worldwide on Friday, drawing large crowds at Apple stores. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has now shared his thoughts on the performance of the new iPhones and how Apple’s Q4 2023 is expected to go.

According to Kuo, the new iPhones are selling well, and Apple is likely to have a strong fourth quarter in 2023. That’s all thanks to higher-than-expected iPhone sales—especially for the pricier models—and increased shipping capacity compared to last year.

Kuo estimates that Apple will ship 35 million units of the iPhone 15 Pro Max in Q4, up from 28 million units of the iPhone 14 Pro Max in the same period last year. He expects this model to be the primary growth driver for Apple during the quarter.

The iPhone 15 Plus is also performing well, despite an initial order quantity that fell short of demand. Apple ordered fewer models than expected based on early sales results hunting stronger demand for this particular model as well. This mirrors a similar trend from the previous year, where the iPhone 14 Plus faced shipping delays but ultimately sold more than anticipated.

In contrast, Kuo states that the standard iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro have not met expectations, potentially leading to order cuts if Apple does not adjust their prices. Although it is unlikely that Apple will lower the prices of these models, there may be increased promotional incentives offered to boost sales.

Despite some challenges with certain models, Apple’s success with the more expensive variants is a positive trend for the company. It will be interesting to see how Apple’s actual performance aligns with the predictions of industry analysts in the coming months.

The Apple iPhone 15 series was finally unveiled recently. The 2023 iPhone lineup is currently available for pre-order and the brand is even bringing discounts for the new smartphones. Apple India has announced discounts for the new iPhone 15 series along with some older iPhone models, so here are all the details.

Apple iPhone 15 series

The Cupertino based giant is offering up to 6,000 INR discount on the iPhone 15 lineup. So now, the Apple iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus are getting a discount of 5,000 INR. Meanwhile, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are also getting a 6,000 INR discount. In other words, the iPhone 15 now starts from 74,900, while the iPhone 15 Plus starts from 84,900 INR. The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max will have an effective price tag of 128,900 INR and 153,900 INR respectively.

Fresh offers on iPhone 14, iPhone 13, iPhone SE, and Others

Apple India isn’t offering discounts exclusively on the iPhone 15 lineup but even some older iPhones and some Apple Watch models. The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus will see a 4,000 INR discount, while the iPhone 13 price tag is lowered by 3,000 INR. The last iPhone model on discount is the iPhone SE, which is discounted by 2,000 INR. Apple’s Watch Series 9, Watch Ultra 2, and Watch SE now feature a 2,500 INR, 3,000 INR, and 1,500 INR discount respectively.

Keep in mind that these discounts are available through HDFC bank cards and the devices are set to be sold on 22nd September 2023.

Apple’s New iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max Are More Repairable and Affordable

Apple recently introduced its new iPhone 15 series at the Wonderlust event. As with every year, the models that garnered the most attention were the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. However, these models stand out not just in terms of technical specifications, but also in internal design, compared to the standard members of the 15 series.

Apple specifically worked to make the devices easier to repair and opted for a more repairable internal design. The company particularly redesigned the frame, allowing for the back glass panel to be easily removed from the devices. As expected, repair costs have changed with easy to repair design.

Apple has updated its U.S. website to reveal the repair fees for the iPhone 15 models. For back glass damage, the company will charge $169 for the iPhone 15 Pro and $199 for the iPhone 15 Pro Max. In contrast, the repair fees for the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max are set at $499 and $549, respectively.

This means there is a 63.4% decrease in repair costs between the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro models, and a 63.5% decrease between the iPhone 14 Pro Max and iPhone 15 Pro Max. As a user of the iPhone 14 Pro Max, I’m disappointed that this change came a year late, but ultimately, the fact that repairs will now be much cheaper is great news for all of us.

The Apple iPhone 15 series finally went official last week, with pre-orders already being live. The first sale of the device will kick off later this week, and now, we finally have some information regarding the battery and charging specs of the 2023 iPhone lineup.

The Cupertino based giant is known to be secretive regarding the battery and charging specs of its products. But thanks to a Chinese regulatory database, these details have been revealed. According to the regulatory listing, the base iPhone 15 model is powered by a 3,349mAh battery pack that feature 12.981Wh charging speeds. The iPhone 15 Plus houses a large 4,383mAh battery pack that supports a wattage of 16.950Wh.

On the other hand, the iPhone 15 Pro houses a 4,383mAh battery pack while the iPhone 15 Pro Max will be powered by a 4,422mAh battery. The former features a 12.70Wh speeds, while the latter comes with 17.109Wh wattage. This is in contrast to previous rumors, which hinted at Apple raising the charging speeds of the higher-end Pro models to 27W. But the Chinese regulatory listing reveals that the iPhone 15 Pro models retain the same charging speed as last year’s iPhone 14 Pro lineup.

It was revealed that the iPhone 14 Pro models could be charged up to 27W thanks to Apple’s 30W USB-C power adapter. So we can assume that the new iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max will also feature these charging speeds.

The iPhone 15 series has finally arrived, and it comes with a number of new improvements over the previous models. One of the most notable changes is the switch to a USB-C port. This is a welcome change for many users, as it means that they can now use the same cable to charge their iPhones and other devices, such as their laptops and tablets.

That said, the iPhone 15’s charging speeds are still slower than most Android phones. However, its USB-C port can now output significantly more power than the Lightning port. In fact, it can output up to 4.5 watts, which is more than 15 times the power output of the Lightning port.

In comparison, the iPhones with Lightning port could only output a maximum of 0.3 watts of power. The higher power output means the iPhone 15 can now power a wider range of accessories, such as external storage drives and other devices that require more power. It can even be used to charge other devices, such as AirPods and headphones.

The iPhone 15’s USB-C port also offers faster data transfer speeds than the Lightning port. For example, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max support fast USB 3.2 Gen 2 speeds up to 10 Gbps when using a USB 3 cable. This means that users can transfer files between their iPhones and other devices much faster.

In addition, the iPhone 15’s USB-C port supports DisplayPort for up to 4K HDR video mirroring and output to external displays. This is a significant improvement over previous iPhones, which were limited to 1080p video mirroring with Lightning adapters.

iPhones have been compatible with 5G since the iPhone 12 series was released in 2020. Since then, Apple has been steadily improving the iPhone’s 5G performance. Now, it’s been reported that the iPhone 15 Pro’s 5G modem chip is up to 24% faster than the previous generation.

This report comes from SpeedSmart, an internet speed measurement tool. SpeedSmart tested the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max’s 5G communication speeds on major American carriers AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon. The report reveals iPhone 15 Pro had faster 5G communication speeds on all three carriers, with download speeds improving significantly.

Among all, Verizon’s network experienced the most significant improvement, with the iPhone 14 Pro averaging 195.83Mbps download speed and the iPhone 15 Pro reaching an average of 243.06Mbps. This is an improvement of 24% in download speed. 

On T-Mobile, the iPhone 15 Pro demonstrated 22% improvement with the fastest average 5G download speeds at 300.92Mbps. And on AT&T the download speeds are  14.6% faster averaging at 204.34Mbps. That said, upload speeds saw little change across all three major carriers.

The improved 5G performance is due to an upgraded modem in the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models, as suggested by the SpeedSmart. Although Apple has not officially disclosed the modem in these devices, SpeedSmart suggests that the Pro models utilize Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X70 modem, which offers three main advantages:

• Significantly lower power consumption
• Better 5G carrier aggregation capabilities
• Better connectivity when the iPhone is further away from a cell tower

With these benefits in tow, SpeedSmart’s tests show that the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max offer up to 24% faster 5G speeds than the iPhone 14 Pro lineup.

While there are rumors of Apple developing its own in-house 5G modems, the company has extended its modem supply agreement with Qualcomm until 2026. This means that Apple may not introduce its own modem technology until a few more generations of iPhones.

Apple launched the iPhone 15 series last week. The entire lineup comprising of the standard, plus, pro, and pro max variants are up for pre-orders in many countries around the world. Apple will start shipping the pre-booked units from September 22. Both the non-pro and pro models pack significant upgrades compared to their predecessors. It seems that the iPhone 15 series has received a great response from customers. However, this has resulted in an unfortunate development. The high demand has led to delayed shipments of orders. 

iPhone 15 series pre-order shipments delayed

Apple started taking the pre-orders for the iPhone 15 series just yesterday. Within a short span, the high demand for the latest-generation flagship phones has led to many buyers reporting a delay in the shipment of their orders. The estimated shipment dates have slipped to as far as mid-November as per Apple’s website for the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Mark Gurman reports that the delivery times are increasingly getting delayed for the iPhone 15 Pro Max. It is delayed by up to 8 weeks in India, 6-7 weeks in China and Canada, and 7-8 weeks in the UK. The delayed orders are applicable for both home and in-store pickup deliveries. Apart from the Pro models, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus are also getting delayed by up to 2 weeks in some markets. 

Apple’s Pro iPhone variants are exclusively manufactured in China. Hence, it does not have any other avenue to ramp up production. This could also lead to a further delay if the demand for iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max continues to surge. Additionally, the latest offering’s titanium frame and A17 Pro based on a 3nm process is already challenging to manufacture. The regular non-pro iPhone models are made in India and Vietnam too, hence mitigating their supply issues.
