The product director of the Xiaomi camera department has recently revealed that the company is working on an overhaul/revamp of its Camera UI for smartphones. The official shared two current options, which include sliding gestures alongside swipes to left or right for various functions.

Option A: The first option is a slide out function for the “More” function through a gesture. This allows users to bring up more panels at any time. However, its downside is that it’s a bit harder to get used to, so it can be useful once users are acclimatized to it.

Option B: The second is relatively simpler and will just have an additional tab named “More” added to the UI. This would basically require just a single tap an is a relatively common feature with no visible downfalls.

Notably, Lei Jun, the CEO of Xiaomi, has also reposted the original post through his official Weibo account as well, a Chinese microblogging website. The senior executive even commented on the development and added his own opinions as well. He chose Option B and asked people about their thoughts since it is originally meant to be a sort of an online poll. One of the biggest launches for Xiaomi this year was none other than the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2. The phone undercuts rivals like the Galaxy S8 and the LG V30 by a significant margin, offering a similar full-screen design at a much cheaper price tag. The phone is a beast on paper, powered by the same Snapdragon 835 chip that’s found inside most top-end flagships in the market this year along with 6GB of RAM. While Xiaomi has consistently managed to give us the best specs at the most competitive price tag, one area where the company is still lagging behind mainstream phone makers like Samsung, Apple, and Huawei is in the camera department.

After our initial hands-on with the phone, we were excited to check out the camera at the back of the phone, a 12MP  1.25 µm sensor with PDAF and OIS. This is quite a decent setup, featuring a slightly tweaked primary sensor of the Mi 6 but is it good enough to take on the big players?

Well, not exactly. The 12MP at the back of the Mi Mix 2 is good for most occasions. But often you are left wanting for more details in the pictures. Don’t get me wrong, the Mi Mix 2 has a pretty good camera, but now that it’s a mainstream flagship that’s more like a cheaper replacement to devices like the V30 and the S8, I personally feel the company could have done better.

But as an independent smartphone, the camera samples reveal that the phone manages to do well, with good levels of detail and punchy colors. Even autofocus is pretty quick and impressive. So, you will be able to take great photos, even better than the Mi 6. What’s disappointing though is the lack of the secondary camera for background blur ‘bokeh’ photos. Given that almost everyone has jumped onto the dual camera bandwagon, it was a surprise to see Xiaomi stick with a single camera module on its top-end flagship.

Xiaomi Mi 6 is the company’s third dual camera smartphone and it’s no surprise that the phone is also the company’s best dual camera flagship till date. The two rear cameras on the Redmi Pro were far from impressive but the setup on the Mi 5S Plus turned out to be quite good. The two cameras at the back managed to capture good-looking images especially in broad daylight, but the real difference due to the dual cameras was seen in the low light images. Now, with the Xiaomi Mi 6 camera, the company have taken things to another level, using a similar setup as the iPhone 7 Plus, a 12MP wide angle lens, and a 12MP telephone lens. But does this setup perform better than previous generations? Also, how does it compare to top camera flagships like the Samsung Galaxy S8?

The short answer is, yes, the Mi 6 camera is much better than its predecessors and it does a good job in keeping up with flagships like the Xiaomi Mi 6. However, you do see that the camera on the Mi 6 is not quite as refined as the one on the Galaxy S8. Low light performance is also not as good as the S8. But in most areas, the Xiaomi Mi 6’s dual camera setup manages to keep up with flagship phones that cost almost twice its price.

In fact, you should check out the camera sample comparison between Xiaomi Mi 6 and OnePlus 3T, Huawei P10, and Huawei P9 to see how well it performs.

One of the biggest improvements that you would see in Xiaomi’s dual camera implementation is the video quality. There’s no surprise that Xiaomi Mi 6 captures the best videos in the entire Xiaomi smartphone family. The phone supports 4K, 1080p, and slo-mo videos and it does a fine job in all the three departments. The video clarity is amazing, colors come out well (maybe a tad oversaturated) and the overall quality is good. OIS is decent but if you are capturing the video while walking, the resulting video will be shaky.

Another highlight of Mi 6’s dual camera setup is the 2X lossless zoom. We could see that the zoom clarity is much better than traditional digital zoom.

Overall, for its price, the Mi 6 comes with great dual cameras.

Like expected, Xiaomi has announced a brand new 360° Rotating Mi Home White Smart Camera for 399 Yuan ($60). This is yet another addition to the company’s smart camera lineup which includes action cameras and surveillance cameras.

Thanks to its rotating design, the new camera boasts of the ability to take 360-degree panorama photos, along with 85-degree wide vertical viewing angle. This ensures that the camera covers a wide area for surveillance. Further, the Xiaomi 360° Mi White Smart camera comes with a large f/1.8 aperture lens. The camera can capture videos at a maximum resolution of 1920 x 1080. There’s professional DSP noise reduction technology as well.

If you are looking for a cheap smart camera which can rotate 360 degrees, the Xiaomi Mi White Smart camera can be yours for around $60. Xiaomi officially announced the new generation of the Yi 4K Action Camera today. We already knew a lot about the device thanks to previous leaks, and now, all those details have been officially confirmed. So, the Xiaomi Yi 4K camera will come with the 12MP Sony IMX377 sensor with Ambarella A9SE95 chip, f/ 2.8 aperture and 155 degree wide angle lens. This allows for the camera to capture 4K resolution videos at 30 fps. The battery inside the new camera is also going to be quite large, featuring 1400mAh capacity that will ensure up to 2 hours of continuous 4K video recording. Apart from 4K, you can also record slo-mo videos on the new Yi 4K action camera in 740p @ 240 fps and 1080p @ 120 fps. It also allows for time lapse videos with 0.5 / 1 /2 /5/ 10/ 30/ 60 seconds internals between shots.

The new generation Yi camera will be available in five different colours including gold and rose gold, and supports Bluetooth 4.0 and 5GHz / 2.4GHz dual band Wi-Fi connectivity for high-speed transfer of files between the camera and the connected device. Finally, there’s a 2.19-inch 330 ppi Gorilla Glass Touch screen on board visible from 160 degree angle.

Xiaomi announced the Yi Action Camera last year in March. Now, it looks like the company is going to announce the successor to the device sometime this week.

Our sources have revealed that Xiaomi will announce a new generation model of the Xiaomi Yi Camera this week. Unfortunately, the source didn’t reveal what new features to expect in the upcoming device. So, as of now, all we know is that we will see the new device pretty soon.

The first generation Xiaomi Yi Camera was a pretty impressive action camera, that opened up a new segment of low-cost performance cameras. The Yi camera was launched at just $64 which was almost half of what the cheapest GoPro Hero model retailed at that time. Even in the features department, the camera was impressive sporting a 16MP Sony Exmor R sensor that could shoot FHD 1080p videos at 60 fps. It was light (72 grams) and was waterproof as well (up to 40m) which made it a pretty good first action camera for your adventures.

However, there were a few drawbacks of the device, which we hope that the new generation model could overcome. For example, the software was not as polished as competitors. Also, we would love to see the new Yi Camera come with a larger battery.

We have been hearing a lot about the upcoming Xiaomi Mi 5 flagship smartphone, both from company executives as well as rumors. As of now, the phone is confirmed to feature the powerful Snapdragon 820 quad-core chipset along with 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution display.

The company was quiet about the phone’s camera specs. But now, Xiaomi’s President, Lin Bin has just shared what appears to be the first camera samples from the Xiaomi Mi 5 flagship.

Apart from mentioning that the samples are from Mi 5, we can also see that the weibo post was made using the Xiaomi Mi 5 handset. The two photos were taken on an unknown beach.

As for the pictures, they have turned out to be pretty good. Both the images have pretty good colors and look rich. However, what’s really impressive is that the Xiaomi Mi 5 managed to capture the image of the flying bird without any visible blur. The second image stands out because of its clarity despite the bird being in motion.

These images can be an indication of the powerful camera inside the upcoming Mi 5 handset. The phone must feature fast focus and OIS for taking such good shots of a bird in motion. Rumors state that we can expect a 16MP rear sensor with Laser Autofocus and dual LED flash on board.

Unfortunately, at this moment, we can’t be sure of the camera specs. But what we do know is that the camera inside the Xaiomi Mi 5 flagship will be quite good. Stay tuned for more details.

Yesterday, Xiaomi announced a new teaser for an event to be held on October 19. Like always, the company is counting down the date until the launch and everyday we see some new information about the upcoming product. When the company revealed its first teaser, it said something about a new generation of products.

From the wording we guessed that the upcoming product could be the second generation Xiaomi Mi Pad 2. There were also rumors about the Xiaomi Mi 5 launch, but we think it would be too early to see the device.

To make things even more confusing, the latest teaser from Xiaomi reveals a camera and a lens. These are shown separately, so could Xiaomi unveil a new camera and mountable lens on October 19? Along with the teaser, the company has said that its going to be a new technology. Further it states that 1 + 1 > 2.

Now, these hints are not enough to conclude that we may see a new DSLR like camera launch at the event. It could also mean that the new product is a smartphone with powerful camera capabilities and externally mountable lens.

Well, if Xiaomi follows tradition, it will reveal more information about the product in the coming days. So lets wait for some more teasers before making any final conclusions about the upcoming launch.
