India restricts import of laptops, tablets, servers to boost local industry

The Indian government has implemented restrictions on the import of personal computers, laptops, and related items to promote domestic manufacturing and reduce reliance on imports, particularly from China. The move comes as part of the government’s efforts to bolster the electronics sector and encourage local production through its production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme.

The Vision Behind India’s Self-Reliance in Electronics

The new restrictions require companies to obtain a valid import license for importing laptops, tablets, all-in-one personal computers, and ultrasmall form factor computers. However, individual consumers are exempted from the licensing requirement for single laptop or tablet imports through e-commerce channels.

There are exceptions to the licensing requirement, including imports for research, testing, evaluation, and repair purposes. Laptops and computers used as essential parts of capital goods are also exempt.

This move may impact companies like Apple, Samsung, and Acer, as they might need to increase their manufacturing and assembly operations in India to continue serving the market. Depending on the implementation of licensing norms, there could be price changes for consumers.

The government’s aim is to reduce dependence on a single country (China) for imports and provide secure digital access to India’s growing number of digital citizens. The initiative seeks to boost local industry and make the nation self-reliant and competitive in the global tech market. Industry experts believe that trusted partners will receive valid licenses, ensuring unrestricted access to reliable brands for consumers.

Desperate Attempt: Man Caught Smuggling 68 iPhones Taped to His Body

We all dream of owning the latest technology products at an affordable price, but this isn’t always possible. The different rules and tax systems of various countries can make this especially more difficult. For example, we mentioned a while back that Turkey is selling the most expensive iPhone in the world, and thanks to taxes, was making even more money than Apple. However, such situations equally increase interest in smuggling. Recently, In China, authorities arrested a man who was attempting to smuggle 68 iPhone across the border. Here are the details…

Man’s Odd Walking Raises Customs Officers’ Suspicions, Leading to Discovery of 68 iPhones

Smuggling is a serious issue in every country around the world. Sadly, China is not an exception. Recently, a man attempted to secretly bring 68 used iPhones into the country. According to a report published by the authorities, on the night of July 31st, this man, who was wearing a dark-blue short-sleeved shirt, tried to cross the border. He picked the “No Need to Declare” lane at the border checkpoint.

However, his walking was weird. He was moving in a very stiff and heavy way. This caught the attention of the customs officers, so they stopped him. After checking him carefully, they found something surprising. The man had 68 old iPhones taped around his waist, tummy, and legs. The case is currently being handled further in accordance with the stipulated regulations.

Although this situation quite surprised us, it is not that shocking for the customs officers. The people working there almost encounter similar cases every day. For instance, we previously mentioned the man who was caught trying to enter the country by stuffing 48 CPUs into his shoes. Although we can understand the need to avoid expenses, you should pay your taxes, otherwise, you can be punished by the law.

Foxconn Invests $600 Million, Creates 13,000 New Jobs in India to Expand Production Facilities

If I asked you which country is at the heart of technology, you’d probably say the USA or China. In fact, this answer was correct until recently. However, after the Covid-19 pandemic, another country was added to the list.

Companies, realizing the dangers of relying on a single region for production, started to set up factories in India, which is already a large market for tech giants. One of these companies, Foxconn, has decided to invest $600 million into a phone and chip project in India.

Foxconn’s India Investments Reflect Growing Importance of the India in Global Tech Supply Chain

Foxconn continues to invest in India without slowing down. The company, which has been producing a portion of iPhone and AirPods in the country for some time, is now investing $600 million in India. What’s more, this isn’t just one project, the company has two different projects in mind. The first of these is valued at $360 million and will focus on producing smartphone parts. This single project alone is expected to create 12,000 new jobs in the country.

Foxconn

Also, there’s a second project. Foxconn and Applied Materials are spending $240 million to build a factory for making chip tools, creating 1,000 new jobs. This big investment is part of Foxconn’s plan to spread out its business across the world and make more kinds of products. It also matches India’s goal of bringing more high-tech manufacturing into the country. Foxconn and Applied Materials didn’t provide more details about their projects in India.

However, as we mention above, this is not the first investment for this company in the region. Foxconn previously partnered with an Indian company, Vedanta, to build a chip and display factory in India. But Foxconn left that project last month. We don’t know why the $19.5 billion deal was cancelled. Still, looking at the new investments, we can say that the company’s thoughts about India have not changed and the cancellation did not stem from this.

TikTok’s parent company ByteDance sued for collecting face scans & other sensitive data on CapCut

ByteDance, the parent company behind the popular TikTok app, was recently hit with a lawsuit that claimed that it is non-consensually collecting users’ biometric data. The lawsuit alleged that the illegal data privacy breach was from the company’s CapCut app.

Yet another data privacy breach from ByteDance

For those unaware, CapCut is a video editing application that has over 200 million active users. But apparently, this platform is collecting their sensitive private information without their consent. The lawsuit was filed in Illinois and claims that CapCut is violating the state’s Biometric Information Act. This breach is from collecting data like face scans and voice prints without informing the users.

ByteDance Sued

Apart from biometrics, the app was reportedly collecting other private information like user location, gender, date of birth, and even gaining access to photos and videos. The primary focus of this invasive data collection is likely in regard to targeted ads. The lawsuit adds that the app is capable of even gaining access to the MAC address and SIM serial number as well. Apparently, CapCut’s privacy policy was intentionally designed to make it harder for users to understand.

In other words, the CapCut users aren’t giving their consent in a proper manner. ByteDance is also behind TikTok, which has faced various accusations over data privacy. Some reports have claimed that it is even harvesting user data in the US, in service of the Chinese government.

Why is this a big deal?

At the moment, Discord on Xbox only enables voice chats and the screen-sharing feature that is enjoyed on PCs was not available. This feature has been highly requested by Discord users on consoles. Since the features first dropped, it allowed users to share their screens and games on Discord servers with friends. And now, the streaming feature is finally making its way to Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and Xbox One.

How to stream Xbox Games on Discord

As per the official blog, the Xbox users will first need to link their Xbox and Discord accounts via Discord on a smartphone or desktop. Head to ‘Settings’ and then ‘Connections, where you’ll find the option to connect the Xbox and Discord accounts. Following this process, return to Discord on Xbox and look for the option to “Stream your game” when sitting in a Discord Server or DM.

Notably, the Nitro members of Discord can also avail special benefits on the console as well. This includes 60fps streaming on 1080p resolution. Meanwhile, free members only get access to 720p resolution at 30fps. Keep in mind that streaming also takes resources, which can either impact gaming performance depending on the title you’re playing. In these situations, the resolution of the stream and its frame rate will likely drop. A good and stable internet connection is also required to get the full benefits.
