Kantar Q2 2018 report places the iPhone X as China’s best-seller and Android as the dominant OS

The latest research by Kantar which covers the smartphone distribution in the major markets for the second quarter of the year is out. The report shows that Android is still the leading OS in the smartphone industry in terms of usage. The report also shows that Apple’s iOS has increased by almost 6 percent in its market shares. This can be attributed to the strong patronage in terms of sales the iPhone 8 and iPhone X have enjoyed in the US.

Kantar report also shows that Android has gained more ground in China and Great Britain but has lost a bit in Germany, France, Spain and the US if compared to Q2 of 2017. It shows that Andriod still retains 80.5% in Germany, 61% in the US, 64.5% in the UK and over 80% in Italy, Spain, and China. The Huawei P20 Pro performance in the UK this quarter has been marvellous, and this can also be an attribute of the boost of  Android in the UK. If compared to last year report, Huawei’s UK market share boosted from 2.7% in Q2 of 2017 to 13.7% in Q2 of 2018. Also, Huawei is another major player in the Android’s OS share expansion in China as well.

The most interesting aspect of the report is the disclosure that iPhone X is the best-selling device in China in the quarter under review. This is despite it being several months since the device was launched in November 2017. The report equally shows that Apple is topping the chart, with 8 of its devices among the top 10 best-selling smartphones. Kantar credits this success to a large number of units of the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus sold. Apple also has devices of all ranges such as the low-end iPhone SE all the way to the more expensive iPhone X which helped out.

The leaked casing shows the rear camera will be located at the top left corner while there will be a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor at the middle. The renders also include that of the front and it is still similar to the earlier one, that is a notch design with the notch housing dual camera sensors and the earpiece. The render also shows the device will have the front-facing stereo speaker located at the chin. Proof of Snapdragon 710-powered “Nokia Phoenix” found in metadata

At the moment there are only two Snapdragon 710 powered smartphones in the market – they are the Xiaomi Mi 8 SE and the Vivo NEX A. There are others said to be in development too such as the Meizu X8, a mid-range Pixel phone scheduled for next year, and a Nokia phone codenamed “Phoenix”.

News of the Nokia Phoneix first surfaced in June in a tweet by the popular leaker, Roland Quandt. He also revealed that the device would be released in Autumn/Winter of this year which means we should expect it to launch between September to December. A new info has surfaced that corroborates Mr. Quandt’s leak.

HMD Global working on SD710 smartphone codenamed Nokia Phoenix

A Twitter user named Hikari Calyx (@Hikari_Calyx) disclosed in a series of tweets yesterday that FIH (Foxconn) is developing a new device with codename PNX. FIH is the manufacturer that handles the production of Nokia phones for HMD.

Apparently, there are two versions of the device – one with number 500001828 and the other with the number 500001829.

In a follow-up tweet, he also revealed he found something in the metadata which confirms it is a Nokia device. From the metadata info, it appears the Nokia Phoenix will be available in China (first). It will also come with Android 8.1 Oreo when it launches.

So far nothing is known about the design of the Nokia Phoenix and what its real name is. However, we do have a few guesses of our own. For starters, the Nokia Phoenix may be the Nokia X7 said to be in development.

The new renders of the smartphone revealed that the front will come with a tall full-screen display with 18:9 aspect ratio. While the phone has a taller display and thin bezels on the sides, the top and the bottom bezels are pretty big. On the bottom bezel, there’s Sony branding.

From the images, it seems that the phone will come with a single camera sensor on the back, along with an LED flash. Just below the camera module, there’s a circular fingerprint sensor for added security. On the right side, there’s a volume rocker and power button. There’s a USB port on the bottom and it seems that Sony has ditched the 3.5mm headphone jack.

The glass bodied smartphone has rounded corners, which seems like a welcome design change compared to the usual rectangular slab type design. The phone, which measures 158.3 x 73.08 x 9.9/10.1 mm, is expected to come with wireless charging support.

Previous leaks related to the smartphone revealed that the Sony Xperia XZ3 will come with a 5.7-inch Full HD+ display with 2160 x 1080 pixels screen resolution, just like its predecessor. Under the hood, it’ll be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor coupled with 6GB RAM.

The device will be running Android 9.0 P operating system out-of-the-box and will be powered by 3,240mAh battery with Quick Charge fast charging support.

Various smartphone manufacturers from China have launched flagship phones with notched display design. However, Meizu is the only mainstream smartphone maker that it is yet to debut a phone with notched display. The TENAA images and official renders of the upcoming Meizu 16 and Meizu 16 Plus smartphones confirm that these phones will be arriving with notch-less screens with elongated aspect ratio. Also, both smartphones offer very impressive screen space thanks to the slim-sized bezels around their screens.

The official renders of Meizu 16 show that these phones will be sporting a very thin profile. The fingerprint scanner cannot be found on the front or rear sides of the Meizu 16 series. The reason behind it is that the Meizu has already confirmed that the Meizu 16 and 16 Plus will be equipped under display fingerprint scanner.

Qualcomm Adreno Turbo may be unveiled today to take on Huawei’s GPU Turbo

Huawei took the smartphone industry by surprise when it announced the GPU turbo technology which is a software enhancement to improve the GPU performance on its phones. The technology has started rolling out via updates to old models while new ones are getting launched with the software onboard. That may have rattled Qualcomm to action as the U.S fabless chipmaker seems to be prepping its own answer to Huawei’s GPU Turbo.

Qualcomm has teased the launch of a new product scheduled to hold on July 25. Apart from releasing a teaser poster, the company also released a teaser video on its Weibo page which invariable suggested whatever is coming will be on the software angle. However, it sill not clear what features the new software technology would pack. The video seems to suggest that the software will be on the Snapdragon 845 but we can’t say if it will be limited to its flagship processors or if less powerful SoCs from the Snapdragon 400 and 600 lines will also be compatible.

But except the company will announce a new SoC, the best guess is a software to enhance performance will come. We’ll bring you details as they unravel.

Earlier this year, LG launched two smartphones — LG V30S ThinQ and LG V35 ThinQ as the company’s flagship smartphones. Now, the company is expected to launch the next-generation LG V-series flagship — LG V40 ThinQ later this year.

This development hints that after LG V40 ThinQ, there will be five more smartphones in the LG V-series as the company has now registered a trademark for LG V90 moniker in Mexico. Currently, there’s no more information available regarding the company’s future plan for the V-series smartphones.

LG V30, predecessor of LG V40 ThinQ

The upcoming flagship smartphone is expected to come with an OLED display with over 90 percent screen-to-body ratio and a notched display that users can hide. Further, the device will be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor and will come with the company’s proprietary Quad DAC, and a dedicated Google Assistant button.

Interestingly, the LG V40 ThinQ is expected to arrive with five cameras out of which three will be placed on the back panel. The triple camera setup is expected to include 20-megapixel, 16-megapixel, and 13-megapixel sensors. The device is said to feature a super wide-angle lens and a super-telephoto lens.

There’ll be two cameras on the front for 3D face scanning for the advanced facial recognition feature, similar to what we’ve seen on Apple iPhone X, Oppo Find X and Xiaomi’s Mi 8. The phone is also expected to pack 6GB RAM and 128GB internal storage.
