Microsoft Surface Phone Appears In Windows 10 APIs, Allegedly Coming With LG Display

Since the failure of Windows-powered phones, several patents and leaks hinted at the existence of a Microsoft Surface Phone. Even the Redmond giant implicitly confirmed its intention to come back in the mobile devices market multiple times. Now, new references to the upcoming phone appeared in a leaked email, a tweet by Panos Panay and even some APIs in the latest Windows 10 preview. Starting from the APIs: they refer to applications which can adapt their user interface and features depending on the position of the hinge. According to the code found, there will be five modes: closed, concave, convex, flat and full.

This confirms the existence of a foldable device, and according to the latest patents and leaks, Microsoft Surface Phone will probably be a foldable device. The mail confirms that it will be a pocketable device, so there are no doubts it will be a phone-sized device. It will belong to a brand new category of devices fostering innovation, coming under the Andromeda project. A new revolution may be incoming, just as the first Surface convertible tablets. Note that Surface tablets have successfully created a new category of devices which many people are using instead of classic laptops because of their versatility.

Even Apple has copied Microsoft with its iPad Pro line-up supporting detachable keyboards and a stylus. Microsoft Surface Phone is also expected to come with stylus support: it would make it the only non-Samsung Galaxy Note device to support a pen for handwriting and drawing. Further, Panos Panay has published a tweet two days ago which implicitly hints at LG supplying the displays of the new foldable Microsoft Surface Phone. The post contains a caricature of Panos Panay made by LG and a hinged photo frame. Make your own conclusions.

Cubot Power Review – Surprisingly Solid 128GB Smartphone with Good Camera!

Cubot has made quite a few phones over the time and the Cubot Power is one of the latest offerings. In fact, this is one of the most powerful budget phones the company has ever made. The key specs include 128GB of storage, 6GB of RAM and a massive 6000mAh battery and the phone costs just under $220. Learn more in the full Cubot Power Review.

VIDEO

[embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JBlCnIUj0mQ[/embedyt]

UNBOXING

The phone ships with some paperwork, USB cable, a power brick and a soft TPU case.

DESIGN

Cubot Power is a nice looking phone, the device feels nice in the hand and the overall build quality is pretty good. However, I wish it was made of more premium materials. For example, the frame feels quite solid but I think it is made of plastic, just like the glossy and cheap-looking backplate. The buttons are okay but they feel a bit cheap as they are made of plastic too.

The phone is a bit thick and heavy since it has a massive 6000mAh battery that lasts for a long time. The best result I could achieve was 13 hours of screen-on time and that involved taking a lot of pictures, using the maximum screen brightness setting a lot and so on. It takes about 1 h 40 mins to fully charge the battery with the supplied fast charger.

I found the display to be pretty nice overall and sunlight legibility is above average.

There is just a single camera system on the back but the phone uses a high-quality Samsung sensor. The fingerprint reader is quite accurate but as usual, there is a slight delay between unlocking and the time the display lights up.

Now a few features in a nutshell: the phone has a 13MP selfie shooter, LEd notification light, a headset jack, and a hybrid dual sim card slot. The loudspeaker quality is not really good. The sound is tinny and flat.

HARDWARE

A huge selling point of the Cubot Power is an impressive sheet of specifications.

In terms of gaming performance, it’s the usual case with the Helio p23 processors. It’s possible to play most of the 3D games but you should expect to see some skipped frames and a bit of stutter here and there. That’s the case with games like Asphalt extreme or Shadow Fight 3. If you play Pubg on medium graphics, you should expect to have quite a bit of lag and stutter.

USER INTERFACE

One of my favorite features of the Cubot Power is stock Android 8.1 user interface. There is no bloatware, no gimmicky features and most importantly, the overall performance is just great. The phone feels nice and smooth all the time even after installing quite a few apps. I’m really happy with a clean and fast user interface.

CAMERAS

I didn’t expect that but I am happy to say that the image quality is pretty good overall. I believe this is the best camera phone Cubot has ever made as the pictures usually come out nice and detailed and even dynamic range is handled well. Obviously, there is a bit too much visible noise in some of the shots etc but that’s nitpicking.

Low-light image quality is not the best but again, it’s surprisingly decent for a sub 200 dollar phone.

Selfies could look a bit sharper but they will do the trick for social media.

[embedyt]https://youtu.be/c9p0069nHIE[/embedyt]

1080P video quality is quite good. However, there is no CAF and the footage is quite shaky.

[embedyt]https://youtu.be/_k5FO4HbnLk[/embedyt]

1080p selfie video looks pretty good too and the sound recording quality is decent.

CONNECTIVITY

I didn’t have any issues in the connectivity department. The signal remained strong all the time and call quality is decent. Also, GPS is accurate to use. The phone has a gyroscope among other sensors.

CONCLUSIONS

Overall, Cubot Power is a pretty good budget phone. Even though it’ not perfect, it exceeded my expectations.

I like that the phone ships with 128GB of storage and 6GB of RAM. I also enjoy stock Android user interface performance has been good. You also get excellent battery life and surprisingly good cameras for the price of the phone.

Now the shortcomings. The phone feels a bit plasticky even though the build quality is good. Also, the loudspeaker could be better and finally and you may see a few skipped frames and stutter in the latest 3D games.

At the end of the day, none of those budget phones is perfect but Cubot Power is a pretty solid phone as you get a lot of value for the price, despite a few shortcomings.

Honor Note 10 May Be Coming Soon With Huge 6.9-Inch AMOLED Display

Given that we can do almost everything we do on a PC on a simple psmarthone, advanced users are always in demand for big displays. The Honor Note series is the line-up containing the biggest phablets of the Chinese company, but last year, there were no devices from this series launched in the market. Now, it looks like the company is planning to switch from the Note 8 to the Honor Note 10 directly as a photo leak has just revealed the existence of a new big Honor phablet.

Recently, we learned that Samsung supplied new panels to Huawei for a phablet. The panels had a size of 6.9 inches and the Super AMOLED technology. After this news, everyone thought the panels belong to the upcoming Huawei Mate 20 which will be probably launched in October. But according to leaks, a Honor device codenamed Ravel is coming with a 6.9-inch display, and that is probably the Honor Note 10. Further, Honor’s president has recently revealed on Weibo that the company is planning to release a bigger version of the Honor 10 that he has been using for a while.

honor note 10

Given that Honor Note 10 will probably be a bigger variant of the H10, we expect it to come with a flagship-level Kirin 970 SoC, an octa-core chipset by Huawei running at a max frequency of 2.4 GHz. It will also come with an 18:9 or 19:9 display. Its predecessor, the Honor Note 8 had a 6.6-inch panel in the classic 16:9 format with a Quad HD resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels. Just like the upcoming device, even the Note 8 had a Super AMOLED display, and this makes the hypothesis even more reliable. It came with 4 GB of RAM and 32, 64 or 128 GB of internal storage depending on the chosen configuration, while on the back side it had a single 13 MP camera with a f/2.0 aperture and OIS.

Meizu X8 Price Will Be Competitively Priced Between 1500-2000 Yuan: CEO

Meizu will launch a new line-up of flagship phones in August: Meizu 16 and 16 Plus; but they will not be alone. Together with them, there will be the Meizu X8, a potential king of quality-price ratio. According to new declarations from the company’s founder and CEO Jack Wong, also known as Huang Zhang, the upcoming upper-midrange device will cost between 1500 and 2000 Yuan.

Meizu 16 Leaked Image

From what the founder said, the 1500 Yuan price tag is referred to the variant with 6 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage, while the higher 2000 Yuan price tag refers to the version with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB ROM. 1500 Yuan roughly translates into $226/€194, while 2000 Yuan is equivalent to about $300 or €258. It is a killer price if we consider that Meizu X8 will be equipped with the Snapdragon 710 SoC by Qualcomm.

In case you don’t know, Snapdragon 710 is the first chipset from the new 7xx series and it is the most powerful one by Qualcomm if we exclude the 8xx series. So, it is an upper-midrange SoC superior to Snapdragon 660. Note that prices refer to the Chinese market, so expect an increase when Meizu X8 will launch in the global market. Meizu 16 and 16 Plus instead should be equipped with the Snapdragon 845 which is definitely the best Qualcomm processor.

Check Out This Meizu Phone With Dual Screens That Was Never Launched

Meizu released the flasghip Pro 7 with a secondary display at the back panel but it seems that design featured on the Pro 7 wasn’t what the company had lined out initially.Meizu

A new Meizu phone prototype has been spotted online. Well, it isn’t exactly new since it is a phone Meizu developed in 2016. The design includes a circular secondary display at rear panel which displays time. The device is said to also pack a Samsung Exynos 8890 chipset but had an expensive price tag of more than 3000 yuan and so it didn’t see the light of day.

The Meizu model doesn’t have a full screen design as it wasn’t popular back then. Secondary display on the Pro 7 didn’t really turn out to be popular so we might not see this design on a Meizu phone in the future. Check out the pictures from below and drop a comment on what you think about the design.

Meizu 16 Gets 3C Certification

The Meizu 16 is scheduled to launch in August and Meizu is bent on keeping to the release schedule. So it doesn’t come as a surprise to see the device has gotten its 3C certification.

The phone has been seen on the 3C website with model number M882Q. The Meizu 15’s model number is M881Q, which further confirms that the M882Q is its successor. If Meizu is following this numerical order for the model number, then the Meizu 16 Plus should have model number M892Q. The certification doesn’t reveal much except for supported bands though.

Meizu 16 3CC

Meizu’s CEO says the Meizu 16 will come with a Snapdragon 845 processor with copper tubes heat dissipation system, an 18:9 display, and an in-display fingerprint scanner. Leaked images also show that it has dual rear cameras. It will also come with up to 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage

Meizu M6 Note Now Down To ¥699 (~$105)

The M6 Note was Meizu’s comeback phone for 2017. The mid-range phone helped it win back its fans following the disappointing Pro 7 and Pro 7 Plus.

The Meizu M6 Note originally launched for ¥1099 (~$166) for the 3GB + 16GB model, ¥1299 (~$196) for the 3GB + 32GB model, and ¥1699 (~$256) for the 4GB + 64GB model. Meizu also announced a 4GB + 32GB model for ¥1499 (~$226). A couple of months later, Meizu slashed their prices by ¥200 with the base model selling for ¥899 (~$136).

Meizu M6 Note JD

Right now, Jingdong is selling the 3GB RAM + 32GB ROM variant for ¥699 (~$106), making it one of the cheapest Snapdragon 625 phones in the market.

The M6 Note may not have an 18:9 display like most phones do today, but it is full HD. It also has impressive dual rear cameras, a 16MP selfie camera, and a more than sufficient 4,000mAh battery. The phone also scores points for design.

Heard the name KaiOS before? If you haven’t, there is no need to be ashamed but we are sure you know a phone that runs it. The Nokia 8110 4G is an example of a phone that runs KaiOS – a Linux-based OS for feature phones with smartphone features.

KaiOS

Google already dominates the smartphone world with its Android OS but it wants its services on feature phones too. So, both companies (Google and KaiOS) are working together to bring services like Maps, YouTube, Search, and Google Assistant to phones running KaiOS.

The device is presently on reservation in China and would go on sale on July 3. Interestingly, the reservation has seen a massive surge and as at the time of filing this report, it stood at over 1.67 million persons.

Although not all persons who made reservations would end up buying the phone, the figure is unprecedented for such a customised device. German Student Invents Phone Casing That Pops Out Automatically Like An Airbag When Dropped

One of the major build issue smartphone users have had to grapple with is the penchant for the screen to get damaged when the phone is dropped on a hard surface. One of the most effective ways of dealing with this is through the use of Corning Gorilla Glass and other glass protection in the market. However, that doesn’t offer 100% guarantee against screen damage.adcase

A German university student, Philip Frenzel, may have come to our aid in this regard with his simple but effective invention. The student came up with a phone case which he called “active damping” case (Adcase) which has spring horns that sprout when the phone is dropped so that the phone lands with a jaunty bounce. Frenzel is an engineer at Aalen University in Germany and his idea won the top award from the German Society for Mechatronics, which considered projects from students all over the country.

The design involves a casing with a set of eight thin metal curls that normally lie flat inside the case. The metal curls pop out and curl up in opposite directions, protecting the edges of the phone from impact and softening the blow considerably compared to hitting a concrete floor. The springs can easily be folded back into their holsters when you pick up the phone. Also, we don’t know if there are preventive measures in place that would stop the device from popping out when the phone is inside the pocket or bag. But we believe there are measures to forestall such.

The innovative Adcase may soon meet with us as Frenzel has already applied for a patent, and even printed T-shirts with a catchy logo. The casing might get launched on the crowdfunding platform – Kickstarter soon, who knows?

Mysterious Motorola Phone Leaks Without Notch

On August 2, Motorola will hold an event where it is expected to launch two new smartphones. We should finally see the flagship Moto Z3 as well as the Motorola One Power, the successor of the Moto X4 with Android One inside. Now, it looks like the former U.S. company acquired by Lenovo may launch another phone at the event. Two photos of a mysterious smartphone by the company have just surfaced online. The devices shown resembles the One Power, but it has some differences. First of all, it does not feature a notch like the Motorola One Power, but it seems to have a display with an 18:9 aspect ratio.

motorola

It has a design composed of a glass back and an aluminum frame, and it sports a dual camera setup on the rear side which is placed vertically. There seems to be a circular fingerprint reader on the rear side, with the company logo embedded. The front panel has moderately narrow bezels around the display with the company branding on the lower part. Given the design of the device, we may be probably talking about a mid-ranger. We doubt it will be a flagship since there is already the Moto Z3 coming soon.

motorola

This mysterious Motorola phone may be either a device with a Snapdragon 6xx or 710 SoC or just a variant of the One Power, given its similarities with the upcoming Android One device. The One Power will come with a notched design, a chin and a vertical dual camera setup with a LED flash in the middle. The Moto Z3 instead should come with the octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 to compete with the Galaxy S9 series and all the other best flagships in the market. We will know everything about the upcoming devices on August 2, in the official event which will be held in Chicago.

Huawei P10 Lite and Mate 10 Lite Start Updating To Android Oreo

Finally, even Huawei P10 Lite and Mate 10 Lite have started updating to Android 8.0 Oreo. The news comes from Germany where some users are getting the OTA notification asking to update their devices. According to reports, the new firmware carries the build number WAS-LX1A 8.0.0.362 (C432) for the P10 Lite and RNE-L01 8.0.0.330 (C432) for the Mate 10 Lite. The update weighs about 2.5 GB if you are going to update from a stable firmware, but if you adhered to the beta testing phase you will just have to download 500 MB. The official changelog is consistent, just as every major update. Important improvements have been implemented in the user interface, as well as improvements related to artificial intelligence.

huawei-p10-lite-shimmer-blue-01

Now, the operating system has a faster boot phase and also better performance, even though these devices still did not receive the update containing the new GPU Turbo technology. The PrivateSpace app and the overall security of the operating system have been improved as well, and smart tips have been implemented to inform the users about useful features of the EMUI. It is now possible to sync more information from LinkedIn to email and calendar and there is also a reinvented settings menu.

Among the other important adds, there is a recycle bin in the gallery app that contains the deleted photos and it keeps it there for up to 30 days. Now, Huawei P10 Lite and Mate 10 Lite can connect to 2 Bluetooth devices at the same time, while it was not possible in the previous version. Given that the update has rolled out to German units of Huawei P10 Lite and Mate 10 Lite, we expect it to expand to all the units of the handsets very soon. Note that these devices have also been confirmed to get the GPU Turbo technology in the coming months: it will improve graphics performances and reduce power consumption.

After Razer, Xiaomi, Nubia and ASUS, even Huawei is planning the release of a phone dedicated to gamers. The President of the company’s Consumer Business Jim Xu has just revealed it in an interview, and he has also confirmed that the phone will be officially unveiled in the second half of this year. He did not reveal anything about its specs sheet, but we think it will surely be something different from the Honor Play, especially for the aesthetics which should look different from a typical phone, just like the Xiaomi Black Shark and ASUS ROG Phone.

Honor Play 01

We only know one thing about this device: it will be equipped with the GPU Turbo technology. In case you have never heard about it, GPU Turbo is a technology which is able to improve graphics performance by up to 60 percent via software. Further, it can reduce energy consumption by up to 30 percent. These are great advantages when it comes to games as they are the most resource-demanding activities you can do on a phone (alongside multi-tasking). Given that it will be a gaming phone, we expect the upcoming Huawei device to pack the most powerful Huawei SoC.

We are referring to the octa-core Kirin 970 or even the upcoming Kirin 980 which is expected to debut on the Mate 20 series. Another element which could be present on the flagship is a wide display with a Full HD+ resolution and a high refresh rate. And, obviously, we expect to see a big amount of RAM and much internal storage. We will probably learn more about the upcoming gaming smartphone in the following weeks and we will keep you updated.

Huawei Will Launch A Gaming Phone This Year & A Foldable Device in 2019

Huawei‘s huge investment in R&D has started yielding positive results in terms of the quality of smartphones the company has been churning out in recent times. At the Asian MWC Shanghai 2018, the company rolled out its 5G plans and it includes a 5G smartphone for 2019. That may likely be the first mobile phone to pack 5G technology. As interesting as it sounds, that isn’t the only awesome device which the Chinese market leader has got in the works.

The company has now revealed that it is also working on releasing a gaming smartphone which should arrive at the end of this year. Recall that Huawei announced a new GPU Turbo technology that is capable of boosting performance significantly on a variety of smartphones when gaming. That apparently isn’t enough as the company may likely come out with something that takes advantage of the GPU Turbo technology but also has enough firepower to deliver an extreme gaming experience. We’ll be on the lookout for this one which will take on the ASUS ROG, Razer phone, Nubia Red Magic and Xiaomi’s Black Shark gaming phones. The list of gaming phones is really growing. Isn’t that awesome?

In addition, Huawei also announced that it has plans to launch its own foldable phone. This is a direct response to Samsung’s own planned foldable device which is expected to debut next year. This is no doubt efforts in the right direction to help the company move past Apple once again into the second spot in term of global shipment. The company is also readying the Mate 20 series which would debut later this year.
