iPhone 9 Plus case renders reveal design of the largest iPhone ever

Yesterday, GizmoChina had presented case renders of the upcoming iPhone 9 that will be arriving as an entry-level smartphone with LCD screen. Apart from the LCD iPhone, the Apple is also expected to introduce two OLED iPhones. One of them is likely to succeed the iPhone X from last year and the other one is expected to arrive as the largest ever iPhone. The rumor mill has dubbed the latter device as iPhone X Plus. Sanfeng, a China-based case manufacturing company has started producing case molds for making protective cases for the upcoming iPhones. It has provided GizmoChina with the case renders of the Plus model. Instead of calling it as iPhone X Plus, the case maker has used the “iPhone 9 Plus” moniker for it.

The case renders of the iPhone 9 Plus reveals that it will be sporting the same design as the iPhone X. The frontside of the smartphone is mainly occupied by the edge-to-edge screen that features a notch. All the necessary sensors for 3D facial recognition will be present inside the notch. Rumors have it that the iPhone 9 Plus would be housing a massive OLED display of 6.5 inches inside a body that measures 157.5 x 77.4 x 7.7mm.

Like the iPhone X, the right edge of the iPhone 9 Plus features a power key whereas the left edge has ring/silent switch and the volume controller. The bottom edge of the iPhone 9 Plus is not visible in these renders. It could be housing a Lightning connector placed between the two speaker grills.

Some rumors have claimed the Plus model arriving this year would be housing a triple camera setup. However, the case renders reveal that Apple may stick vertical dual camera setup like the iPhone X.

The case manufacturer did not reveal any details on the specs of the iPhone 9 Plus. Recent reports reveal that the large-sized iPhone could be housing a battery of around 3,000mAh capacity and it could be fueled by the Apple A12 SoC. Since the iPhone X was introduced with a starting price of $999 last year, the iPhone 9 Plus could come with a higher price tag.

Since the case maker has already started producing case molds, its cases for the upcoming iPhones will be available in August just in time for the new iPhones that are pegged to debut in September.

Alcatel 5V is Official: Packs Notch, Dual Cameras, Big battery

TCL has announced a new Alcatel phone. The new device, called the Alcatel 5V, belongs to the 5 series but has better specs and an overall better design than the Alcatel 5.

Alcatel 5V

Design

TCL has joined the notch train with the Alcatel 5V. The notch is fairly wide and is home to the front camera, sensor, and earpiece. The bottom has a bit of bezel but still smaller than what you will find on 16:9 phones.

The rear looks nice and has a similar reflective finish to the Alcatel 3 and Alcatel 3V. The reflective appearance is due to a process called Optical Vacuum Plating. It also has dual rear cameras arranged vertically and positioned on the left. TCL has decided not to copy the iPhone X by separating the sensors. It looks odd but distinct from the plethora of Android phones with iPhone X-styled cameras.

Alcatel 5V Specs

The Alcatel 5V has a 6.2-inch 1500 x 720 display with Dragontrail glass on top. With the notch, the phone has a screen-to-body ratio of 88%.

Powering the device is MediaTek’s Helio P22 processor with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. There is an expansion slot for more storage. The rear cameras are a 12MP 1.25um sensor and a 2MP secondary sensor. Like most manufacturers, TCL has added AI features such as scene detection. There is also Google Lens baked into the camera app. The front camera is an 8MP sensor.

Alcatel 5V cameras

The Alcatel 5V runs Android 8.1 Oreo and packs a 4,000mAh battery. It also has a fingerprint scanner and support for face unlock, though it is called Face Key and is said to scan 106 facial key points and unlocks the phone in 0.5 seconds.

OnePlus applies for trademark for “Warp Charge”, may be replacement for Dash Charge

Following the launch of the OnePlus 6, OnePlus has refrained from using the phrase “Dash Charge” to refer to its fast charging technology or any of its charging accessories. The reason for that is due to a trademark issue in the US and EU. A new trademark filing has revealed what may be the new name for its fast charging technology.

OnePlus Warp Charge

According to a trademark filing in Europe, the new name for OnePlus’ fast charge technology may be “Warp Charge”. The application was filed on Friday, the 13th of July and includes the new logo for the charging technology. It is also said to fall under class 9 of trademark classifications. Items under this class include most of the electronics in use today.

In OnePlus’s application, the trademark will be used for data cables, power adapters, cell phone battery chargers, electrical adapters, chargers for electric batteries and wireless chargers.

You may be wondering why “wireless chargers” is on the list since OnePlus doesn’t have any phone that supports wireless charging neither does it make wireless chargers. Since it is a trademark application, it can as well cover future products.

Samsung Galaxy S10, Note 10 and Galaxy A phones to feature ultrasonic fingerprint scanner

DJ Koh, the head of Samsung’s mobile division has visited Wuhan, China to listen to the voice of Chinese customers. During the meet, he shared couple of new information on the upcoming Galaxy Note 9 and the smartphones that will be arriving next.

Recent reports have revealed that the Note 9’s S Pen will be a versatile stylus since it will carry support for Bluetooth connectivity. At the Wuhan event, Koh revealed that the S Pen will be arriving with many new features including some gaming-related features.

The recently unveiled Vivo X21 and Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition are equipped with optical fingerprint scanner supplied by Synaptics. And the Huawei Mate RS Porsche Design has optical fingerprint sensor manufacturer by Goodix. At the Wuhan press conference, DJ Koh has confirmed that the Galaxy S10 will be coming with ultrasonic fingerprint scanner.

He added that since optical fingerprint scanner does not deliver good user experience, it hasn’t been included on the S10. He said that Samsung could have used optical fingerprint scanner on its smartphones two years ago, but it avoided using it because of poor user experience. By including ultrasonic fingerprint sensor on the S10, the South Korean company wants to deliver better screen fingerprint scanning experience on the S10.

Samsung-Galaxy-S10-concept-design-11-1420x799

Samsung CEO Guo Minghao who was also present at the conference reveled that the ultrasonic fingerprint scanner will be also made available on other Galaxy phones arriving next year. He specifically revealed that the Galaxy A series and Galaxy Note 10 arriving in 2019 will be featuring ultrasonic fingerprint reader.

Samsung has been launching Galaxy A series smartphones in December and January since the past few years. The Galaxy S10 is expected to get unveiled at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in February 2019 whereas the next Galaxy A series smartphones are likely to debut by the end of this year or early 2019. Since they are expected to launch ahead of S10 series, they are unlikely to feature ultrasonic fingerprint scanner because Samsung is reportedly planning to launch S10 series as its first phones with under display fingerprint scanner.

So, there are two possibilities here, the first one could be that Samsung may hold the launch of the upcoming Galaxy A phones and unveil it after debuting the S10 series. The second possibility is that the Galaxy A phones later this year or early 2019 could be mid-range phones and they may not feature under display fingerprint scanner. So, the company may launch some other Galaxy A phone with ultrasonic fingerprint scanner later in the coming year.

As far as Galaxy S10 series is concerned, it is likely to feature three smartphones that will be arriving with different screen sizes of 5.8-inch, 6.1-inch and 6.4-inch. Among these, only the 6.1-inch and 6.4-inch will be equipped with Qualcomm’s ultrasonic fingerprint scanner.

Xiaomi launches the Yeelight Meteorite Induction Ceiling Lamp Mini priced at 99 yuan ($14)

Xiaomi‘s eco-chain company Yeelight has carved a reputation for itself for the wide array of home electric lighting systems including smart light, ceiling lamps, bedside lamps, eye-protection table lamps and others. The company has just launched the Yeelight Meteorite Induction Ceiling Lamp Mini which is similar to the Yeelight induction night lamp which was launched last year. That means the lamp comes with a motion sensor which powers the lamp when movement is detected and then it goes off in the absence of any motion.Yeelight Meteorite Induction Ceiling Lamp Mini

The light is very suitable to light up rooms and passageways so that when the main light is turned off at night, they won’t need to turn the light back on when someone wants to use the restroom or have any other cause to wake off in the dead of the night. It actually is equipped with two sensors, a photosensitive sensor and human infrared sensor. It turns on automatically in the dark only when human body movement is detected. When there is no more movement, the light will automatically go off after 60 seconds.Yeelight Meteorite Ceiling Lamp Mini

The Yeelight Meteorite Induction Ceiling Lamp Mini has a diameter of 25cm and can also be used in the home porch aisle or balcony thus eliminating the need to switch on the light at any time. This will help to eliminate mosquitoes which are attracted by lights at night. It is said to have an anti-mosquito design but we don’t know how that works. Perhaps, the light won’t attract insects and mosquitoes when switched on.
