OnePlus has begun rolling out an update to the OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T. The update which comes as OxygenOS 5.1 brings both devices to Android 8.1 Oreo.
OnePlus has also included April’s security patch in the update and full-screen gesture support for the OnePlus 5T. There are also a few new additions to the gaming mode and OnePlus launcher.
Android 8.1 brings new features like neural network API which provides apps with hardware acceleration for on-device machine learning. There is also support for Netflix’ picture-in-picture mode.
For OxygenOS features, the launcher can now auto-name folders based on categories. There are also category tags when using the app drawer search function. The latter feature is also available on the OnePlus 3T. OnePlus has also optimized the gaming mode. There is a new power saving mode and network boost for gaming apps.
LG is preparing to launch its new flagship smartphone, which is reportedly named LG G7 ThinQ. While we have already seen lots of leaks related to the phone’s specifications and features as well as images and renders, the new render of the LG G7 ThinQ by @evleaks gives the best view of the phone’s design.
There is a thick metal frame, which reminds us the company’s another model LG G6. The phone also has rounded corners around the phone’s frame. Further, the renders also confirm that the phone’s display will feature a notch on the display — just like most other flagship smartphones launching this year.
The notch consists of a typical sensor, a front-facing camera sensor, and a small earpiece. The smartphone is expected to come with a dual rear camera setup with two 16-megapixel sensors, which will be a step up from the 16-megapixel + 13-megapixel combo setup on the LG V30.
Based on the previous reports, the phone will also come with recording and playback support for HDR 10. The flagship phone is expected to sport an M+ LCD display with a panel said to be “twice as bright as the G6 and significantly more colorful.”
Under the hood, the LG G7 ThinQ is expected to be powered by the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset and have up to 6GB of RAM. The phone is believed to feature an extra physical button to trigger an AI-enabled voice assistant.
The South Korean company has already scheduled a launch event for LG G7 ThinQ on 2nd May in New York, followed by a domestic launch in Seoul on 3rd March. So, it’s just a matter of a couple of weeks before the company officially reveals the pricing and availability details.
OPPO is following the steps of its sister company Vivo. The latter was the first manufacturer to release a phone with an in-display fingerprint scanner but OPPO may be joining the ranks soon.
OPPO has received a patent approval from China’s State Intellectual Property Office for an in-display fingerprint scanner. Photos from the patent documents show that the fingerprint scanner doesn’t only unlock the device but can be used when the phone is unlocked too which may mean support for payments too.
The fingerprint recognition area is pretty small compared to the one on the Vivo Apex.
Motorola is expected to release the Moto E5 series models this year as successors to the E4 series. The Moto E series is the company’s budget series and usually come with an affordable price but quality build. We expect the Moto E5 to launch alongside the E5 Plus. A couple of official-looking renders of the models have surfaced, revealing the design of both the Moto E5 and Moto E5 Plus captured from all angles.
Moto E5
This isn’t the first time we are seeing the press images of the Moto E5 Plus but this time around, the renders come in Graphite and Gold colours. The renders confirm the presence of an 18:9 aspect ratio on the screen and a glossy back. At the rear, there is a fingerprint scanner and a camera module. The camera modules could be confused as housing a dual camera setup but in reality, there is only a single camera. The glossy back finish looks like it could be glass or metal but considering the expected entry-level price tag, it could also turn out to be glossy plastic. According to Geekbench, the Moto E5 will feature a Snapdragon 430 chipset. The device is also expected to sport a 5.0-inch display.
On the other hand, the Moto E5 looks less flashy than the E5 Plus. Its back has a matte finish and the material looks like metal but could actually be plastic. The Mto E5 also comes with a single camera and in this case, there is no confusion about that. The device also packs a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor embedded into the Moto logo.
It remains to be seen when the Moto E5 and E5 Plus will be launched but we believe that won’t be too far away. We also don’t know what price tags they would adopt and the complete specs.
Motorola has scheduled a launch event on 19th April in Brazil, where the Lenovo-owned company is expected to launch its upcoming Moto G6 smartphone series. Now, ahead of that, Motorola has slashed the pricing on its Moto G5S in India.
The Moto G5S has received a price cut of Rs. 4,000 in India, bringing down the phone’s effective price to Rs. 9,999. The phone was originally launched in India in August last year for Rs. 13,999.
The smartphone comes with a 5.5-inch Full-HD IPS LCD display with screen resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels, which is protected by a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass 5 on top. The handset runs on Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 processor and is paired with 4GB RAM and 32GB internal storage.
The device comes equipped with a single rear camera that has a 16-megapixel sensor, with PDAF, f/2.0 aperture, and LED flash. On the front side, it comes with a 5-megapixel camera sensor with a wide-angle lens, LED flash, and f/2.0 aperture.
Connectivity options on the smartphone include 4G VoLTE, dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth v4.2, GPS/ A-GPS, 3.5mm headphone jack, and Micro-USB port. The device runs on Android 7.1 Nougat operating system out-of-the-box. There’s a 3,000mAh battery under the hood which comes with TurboPower fast charging technology.
This price cut for the Moto G5S smartphone comes at a time when Motorola is expected to launch its next-generation Moto G-series devices — Moto G6, G6 Play and G6 Plus at a launch event on 19th April. Along with Moto G6-series, the company is also preparing to launch Moto E5-series smartphones.
Last week, ZTE’s Nubia announced the Nubia Z18 Mini. It is a less-powerful variant of the unreleased flagship which should launch as the Nubia Z18. The launch of the Z18 may not be far off as a flagship Nubia phone has just been spotted on TENAA.
The ZTE phone has model number NX606J and this isn’t the first time we have come across it. About two months ago, a phone with the same model number and powered by a Snapdragon 845 processor was seen on AnTuTu.
[envira-gallery id=”186036″]
The Nubia NX606J has a 5.99-inch display with a 1080 x 2160 display. It is powered by an octa-core processor clocked at 2.649 GHz. This is most definitely the Snapdragon 845 Mobile Platform.
The phone has two variants – one with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage and another with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. There are dual cameras on the rear but TENAA lists only one of them which is the 24MP main sensor. There is an 8MP sensor in front for selfies.
The Nubia NX606J runs Android 8.0 Oreo, has a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner, and packs a 3,350mAh battery.
TENAA has provided pictures of a black unit but adds that there will be a gold unit too. We believe there will be more than two color variants at launch.
The Xiaomi Mi A1, the first Android One phone from the Chinese manufacturer is not available for buying on Mi.com and Flipkart. Hence, the rumor mill has started speculating that the company might have discontinued the Mi A1 and it could be prepping up to launch the Mi A2 as its successor phone. A Xiaomi representative has confirmed that the Mi A1 is not discontinued and the company will soon begin selling it once again. However, the spokesperson did not reveal the exact timeframe of the return of the smartphone.
The Xiaomi Mi A1 was launched in India in September 2017. It is a re-branded version of the Xiaomi Mi 5X that was exclusively made available in China in July last year. The Mi A1 runs on stock version of Android Oreo and does not feature the MIUI 9 skin that is found on the Mi 5X. It was launched with a pricing of Rs. 14,999 (~$228) in India and its price was permanently slashed to Rs. 13,999 (~$213) in December.
Xiaomi will be launching the Xiaomi Mi 6X smartphone on April 25. It is speculated that like the Mi 5X, the Mi 6X will be not available outside of China. However, the same phone running on stock version of Android could be sold in overseas market as Xiaomi Mi A2.
The Xiaomi Mi A2 and Redmi Y2 monikers was spotted in the source code of the Indian edition of Xiaomi’s website. This suggest that the company may introduce the Mi A2 few weeks after the launch of Mi 6X.
Recent reports have revealed that the Xiaomi Mi 6X will be equipped with 5.99-inch FHD+ display, Snapdragon 660 chipset, 12-megapixel Sony IMX486 + 20-megapixel Sony IMX376 dual camera setup and Sony IMX376 20-megapixel selfie snapper. Other specs include Android 8.1 Oreo, 2,910mAH battery and variants like 4 GB RAM + 64 GB storage, 6 GB RAM + 64 GB storage and 6 GB RAM + 128 GB storage.
In related news, Xiaomi is also rumored to be working on a budget phone called Redmi S2 that will be featuring an 18:9 display supporting HD+ resolution, Snapdragon 625 SoC, 12-megpaixel + 5-megapixel dual camera setup, 16 GB storage and 3,080mAh battery.
ZTE and its relationship with the United States just took a turn for the worse and the effect will be massive. The reason for the sour relationship is not unrelated to the sanctions placed on the Chinese manufacturer last year for selling US technology to Iran.
ZTE got fined for its actions and was told to terminate the employment of 4 senior executives and discipline 35 others or risk getting cut off from its US suppliers. However, it only fired the four executives as it revealed in March.
ZTE’s failure to keep to its agreement resulted in the US Department of Commerce announcing yesterday that all American companies are banned from selling components to ZTE for a period of 7 years.
The first American company that comes to mind is Qualcomm which means for the next 7 years, ZTE should not release a phone powered by a Qualcomm chip. While ZTE may look to MediaTek for chips for its mid-range phones, flagships like the Axon 9 which should come with a Snapdragon 845 may be scrapped or delayed due to a redesign if ZTE decides to switch to a Samsung processor or MediaTek chipset.
Unfortunately for ZTE, the processor part is just half of its problems. The US Department of Commerce also banned the export of software which means its devices may not come with Google Play services or receive updates.

Huawei’s sub-brand Honor will be debuting the Honor 10 flagship phone in London on May 15. However, the company will be debuting it first in China on April 19. Well-known tipster Roland Quandt has released some press renders of the Honor 10 smartphone. Also, he has revealed some information on the specifications of the upcoming Honor flagship.’
Quandt claims that the Honor 10 will be available in colors like Black, Teal and a special Bluish-pink variant that shows off a different shade depending on the viewing angle. The rear panel of the phone is made out of glass and it features an aluminum frame. It measures 7.7mm in height and it weighs 153 grams.
The Honor 10 borrows its design from the Huawei P20 flagship phone. Like the Huawei P20, the Honor 10 features a notched screen and a fingerprint scanner enabled home button on the bottom bezel. The only noticeable design change on the Honor 10 is that it features a horizontally arranged dual camera setup instead of the vertical dual camera found on the P20.
The Honor 10 has a 5.84-inch IPS LTPS LCD display that the supports 2280 x 1080 pixels. The screen is laid under a layer of 2.5D glass. The tipster claims that the handset is equipped with 20-megapixel + 24-megapixel dual camera setup, but its TENAA listing had revealed that it features 16-megapixel + 24-megapxiel dual rear cameras. The dual-tone LED flash is positioned besides the dual camera module. Like predecessor models, the Honor 10 lacks Leica branding for its dual rear shooters.
Unlike the main camera, the Honor 10 features the same 24-megapixel front facing camera that can be found on the Huawei P20 series phones. The frontal camera will bear AI capabilities. The TENAA listing of the Honor 10 has suggested that it could be fueled by the NPU enabled Kirin 970 SoC that powers the Honor V10, Huawei P20 and Mate 10 series. Depending on the market, the Honor 10 will be available with 4 GB RAM + 64 GB storage or 6 GB RAM + 128 GB storage. It does not feature a microSD card slot.
The Honor 10 will be running on Android 8.1 Oreo that will be overlaid with Emotion UI 8.1. It will be equipped with a 3,320mAh battery like the Huawei P20. Quandt has not revealed any information on its pricing, but the Chinese media is speculating that 4 GB RAM + 64 GB storage and 6 GB RAM + 64 GB storage and 6 GB RAM + 128 GB storage variants would be respectively priced at 2,499 Yuan (~$398), 2,899 Yuan (~$461) and 3,399 Yuan (~$541). This shows that the Honor 10 will be cheaper than the P20. This could be because it includes a cheaper display and eMMC memory.

Obviously, we expect the gaming phone to be a flagship as video games are the most resource-demanding apps on a smartphone. ASUS announced its latest flagship at MWC 2018: the Zenfone 5z. It boasts a wide 6.2-inch display and a notched iPhone X-like design. Under the hood, it sports an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset and up to 6 GB of RAM.

Huawei did set a target of 20 million units in sales for its latest flagships – the P20 and P20 Pro. The company has headed off to a good start as the sales of both models reportedly generated $15 million in just 10seconds during its first sales. The P20 and P20 Pro went on sale in China last Thursday and as usual, it was sold via a flash sale.
We don’t know the number of units available during the flash sale but for the products to be able to generate up to 100 Million Yuan in sales, the available stock must have been huge. This impressive revenue from the sales of both models gives us an idea of how the models would fare when they eventually become available in other markets. In particular, the P20 Pro is expected to command the larger share of interests as a result of its design and unique triple camera setup.
The Huawei P20 starts at 3700 Yuan while the P20 Pro starts at 4000 yuan. Both models are presently available globally at Huawei authorized retailers and select mobile carriers.
Since after its first debut at the Mobile World Congress, ASUS officially launched the ZenFone 5 for its home fans in Taiwan on April 12. The smartphone was also unveiled in China this week. ASUS ZenFone 5 is no doubt a well-designed smartphone and its sleek design are likely responsible for the huge popularity the device enjoys since it was announced. Here’s are some hands-on/ unboxing pictures which bring to the fore, the Zenfone 5’s design captured from all angles.
As a reminder, the ZenFone 5 has a double-sided glass design. Both are 2.5D curved Corning Gorilla Glass with a metal frame in between them. The Zenfone has a notch display design similar to the iPhone X but the Zenfone’s notch is smaller. The device features a 6.2-inch Super IPS LCD FHD+ display with an aspect ratio of 19:9 and a resolution of 2246 x 1080 pixels. The screen has up to 90% screen-to-body ratio.
