The latest model will obviously cost you more as it’s the best Apple has to offer. So if you want something slightly more affordable, the iPad Pro M4 is the one to go for. 

It’s tough to tell which one sounds better unless you’re an absolute audiophile. And more importantly, you can get the M4 at discounts and offers, which is what matters for most people.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra

Samsung follows a similar strategy to Apple. The Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra also uses a quad-speaker setup, but this time, the speakers are tuned by AKG and come with Dolby Atmos support. 

As a result, you can expect clean vocals and a good sense of separation, especially if you tweak things through Samsung’s audio presets and EQ.

Pair the audio with a massive 14.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X screen, and the Tab S11 Ultra feels like a straightforward alternative to the iPad Pro for people living inside the Samsung ecosystem. It’s just a solid multimedia machine that also happens to handle multitasking well.

There’s nothing flashy about how the speakers are presented, but they’re consistently good, and that’s often enough.

Lenovo Tab Plus

This is where things start to look different.

The Lenovo Tab Plus makes a trade-off most tablet makers avoid—it gives up slimness for better sound. 

Lenovo Tab Plus has a unique, thick bump on the back which houses an enormous (by tablet standards) eight-speaker JBL-tuned system. And its specs alone sound ambitious.

It has four matrix tweeters and four force-balanced woofers delivering 26W of stereo power from a large 22cc speaker box. As one can expect, the setup delivers a whole different kind of audio experience. 

The sheer number of drivers and the large acoustic volume mean it can push out sound with significant volume and minimal distortion, even when pushed close to the limit. 

The compromise is the design. That speaker hump is noticeable, but Lenovo has thoughtfully placed a kickstand in it. As a result, you can place it on a surface level and enjoy your shows and movies without the worry of holding its heft. 

Xiaomi Pad 7

The Pad 7 from Xiaomi is another entry on our list of best-sounding tablets. It is equipped with four speakers, Dolby Atmos support, and Hi-Res Audio certification. For most people, that means solid clarity, decent stereo width, and enough volume for daily use.

There’s also a “200% volume mode” that boosts loudness well beyond the default limit. You might rarely need to use it, but it’s there if you need it.

As a side note, the China-only Pad 7 Ultra steps things up with four woofers and four tweeters, but since you probably can’t buy it easily outside China, the regular Pad 7 is the more practical option to talk about.

OnePlus Pad 3

The OnePlus Pad 3 is a great device for multimedia consumers. It has a big 13.2-inch display at 3.4K resolution, 144Hz refresh rate, and brightness goes high enough for outdoor viewing. 

But the speakers are what keep it in this conversation. Like some of the others here, OnePlus uses eight drivers—four tweeters and four woofers—to create a clean, well-balanced stereo image. It doesn’t try to overdo bass, but the mix has enough weight to make movies more interesting.

It also has a big 12,140 mAh battery and 80W fast charging support, so you can binge-watch without worrying about running out of power.

Honorable mention

Google Pixel Tablet with Speaker Dock

The Pixel Tablet is an interesting case of turning a tablet into a multimedia machine. The tablet itself has quad speakers, but what makes it unique is the optional speaker-dock accessory.

The dock features a 43.5mm full-range speaker that delivers noticeably better, room-filling sound with crisp treble and richer bass. 

When docked and locked, the tablet automatically switches into “Hub Mode,” which makes it more than just a tablet. You can display Google Photos albums as a screensaver when it’s not in active use.

It also provides full access to Assistant for playing music or videos, controlling smart home devices, and getting information through voice commands. 

The Pixel Tablet is also the first tablet to act as a Chromecast receiver, so you can cast music and videos from your phone or other devices directly to the docked tablet’s screen and speaker.

However, its main downside is longevity. The Pixel Tablet was launched in 2023, and the company hasn’t released a successor yet. It’s only guaranteed to receive Android version updates until at least June 2026 and security updates until at least June 2028. So you have to keep that in mind.

Apple’s new iOS 26 may look like an ordinary version jump on paper, but it signals something bigger: a fresh chapter in how iPhone software looks, feels, and acts. You can call it the most ambitious refresh to iOS in years, one that goes beyond cosmetic polish and taps into Apple’s evolving vision for AI and real-time interaction.

Apple announced iOS 26 this week at WWDC 2025, and no, you didn’t miss iOS 19 through 25. The company is aligning version numbers across its platforms, giving us iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS 26, and so on, to match the year. That alone speaks to Apple wanting its entire ecosystem to feel more cohesive. But the real story here is what’s inside.

iOS finally feels alive again

If there is one visual change you’ll notice first, it is the new Liquid Glass design. Inspired by the glassy, layered aesthetic of visionOS, Liquid Glass introduces an entirely fresh material to iOS. Everything from app icons to widgets to system controls now appears as if crafted from translucent glass, subtly refracting and reflecting what lies beneath. It makes static elements like the Lock Screen clock feel dynamic, adapting fluidly to images and space. Move your iPhone and spatial wallpapers respond with a 3D parallax effect that adds depth and dimension.

This marks an interesting evolution when viewed against iOS’s design history. Earlier versions of iOS, especially from iOS 1 to iOS 6, used a skeuomorphic design style. This approach mimicked real-world textures and materials, with many UI elements featuring a glassy, shiny, or 3D-like appearance. Buttons often looked like polished glass or plastic with highlights and reflections.

Starting with iOS 7 in 2013, Apple moved to a flat design under Jony Ive’s direction. This stripped away most of the skeuomorphic textures in favor of a flatter, more minimal aesthetic, using bright colors and simple icons. Subtle translucency effects, such as frosted glass in the Control Center and Notification Center, remained but were far more restrained.

Now, Apple has reworked app interfaces to take full advantage of this new Liquid Glass material. Safari flows edge-to-edge, shrinking tab bars to reveal more content. In apps like Music, News, and Podcasts, floating tab bars expand or shrink depending on your interaction, keeping content front and center. The Camera app also adopts a streamlined layout with hidden controls, allowing you to focus more fully on your shot.

Apple is also giving third-party developers access to Liquid Glass APIs, meaning your favorite apps could soon match this dynamic look and feel.

Apple Intelligence

Apple Intelligence isn’t entirely new, it first arrived in iOS 18. But in iOS 26, it has grown into a much smarter and more integrated part of the iPhone experience. Live Translation now works seamlessly across Phone calls, Messages, and FaceTime, translating both audio and text in real time, entirely on-device. No cloud required. You can hold a phone conversation in two different languages and both sides will follow along effortlessly.

Visual Intelligence takes the concept of Google’s Circle to Search and gives it an Apple spin. You can take a screenshot of anything — a social post, an event flyer, a product you like and ask ChatGPT questions about it or search similar items on Google or Etsy. It also recognizes event details and can suggest adding them straight to your calendar.

Apple Intelligence also now powers smarter Shortcuts and Writing Tools, auto-summarizes order tracking emails, and lets users create Genmoji, custom emoji built by combining their favorite icons and descriptions. The result is an AI layer that feels more capable and present in your day-to-day iPhone use.

Everyday apps get sharper, smarter

iOS 26 breathes new life into core iPhone apps too.

The Phone app now screens unknown calls for you. Your iPhone will answer first, ask who is calling and why, and show you the info so you can decide to pick up or ignore. Hold Assist will stay on hold for you, notifying you when a real person joins the call.

Messages gains message screening for unknown senders, typing indicators in group chats, and AI-suggested polls. You can even set AI-generated custom backgrounds for your chats.

Music gets lyrics translation and AutoMix DJ-style transitions. Maps adds Visited Places to help you track your favorite spots and suggests optimized routes for your commutes. Wallet now gives you real-time flight updates with airport maps and Find My integration.

And yes, gaming gets love too: the new Apple Games app pulls all your titles into one hub, helps you discover new ones, and shows you what friends are playing.

Designed for today’s Apple ecosystem

iOS 26 also brings its Liquid Glass aesthetic and smarter interactions to CarPlay, AirPods, and beyond. CarPlay Ultra now takes over your car’s entire display system, including climate and vehicle controls, giving you a unified, Apple-powered in-car interface.

For AirPods, you get studio-quality audio recording and even a new camera remote function that lets you snap photos or start recording with a press of the AirPods stem.

The bottom line

Apple just rolled out iOS 18.4.1, and this isn’t your usual bug fix update. This mid-cycle release tackles two critical zero-day vulnerabilities that Apple says were used in “extremely sophisticated” attacks against specific, high-profile iOS users. The update also spans iPadOS, macOS Sequoia, visionOS, and tvOS, reinforcing just how widespread the threat might be.

The first vulnerability, tracked as CVE-2025-31200, affects Apple’s Core Audio framework. Discovered by Apple in collaboration with Google’s Threat Analysis Group, the flaw allowed attackers to execute arbitrary code simply by tricking a device into processing a maliciously crafted media file. That’s a big deal, especially since Core Audio is baked into every Apple device.

The second, CVE-2025-31201, was found internally by Apple. It targets a lower-level security safeguard known as Return Pointer Authentication Code (RPAC). This system is designed to block attackers from injecting malicious code into a device’s memory. The exploit reportedly allowed attackers with read/write access to sidestep these protections entirely.

Apple hasn’t confirmed who’s behind the attacks or how many users were hit, but Google’s involvement hints at possible state-backed operations. This wouldn’t be the first time, Apple has long been in the crosshairs of sophisticated spyware operations targeting activists, journalists, and dissidents.

This update also quietly fixes a rare wireless CarPlay issue affecting certain vehicles, which some users had flagged as more than just an inconvenience. If you’re on an iPhone XS or newer, or using recent models of iPads, Macs, or Apple TV, you’ll want to update now.

Apple has now patched five zero-days in 2025 alone. The message is clear: even the most locked-down ecosystems aren’t immune to evolving threats, and updates like these aren’t optional.

A recent study by Boston-based cloud security firm Lookout has revealed that iOS devices face a higher risk of phishing and web content threats compared to Android devices. The study, which analyzed data from the third quarter of 2024, uncovered significant trends and alarming statistics regarding mobile security threats.

Rising threats and increased phishing attempts

Lookout’s Threat Lab researchers reported a 17 percent rise in enterprise-focused credential theft and phishing attempts compared to the previous quarter. Additionally, there was a 32 percent increase in the detection of malicious apps. One notable finding was the greater exposure of iOS devices to phishing and web content threats. Specifically, 19% of enterprise iOS devices encountered at least one mobile phishing attack in each of the first three quarters of 2024, whereas the figure for Android devices stood at 10.9 percent.

The evolving mobile threat landscape is a growing concern as cybercriminals increasingly target mobile devices during the early stages of their attacks. Lookout’s research highlights the need for heightened vigilance and robust security measures to protect sensitive data on mobile platforms.

Moreover, Lookout’s Threat Lab has recently uncovered two critical families of mobile surveillanceware, linked to advanced persistent threat (APT) groups operating out of China and Russia. These discoveries underscore the sophistication and persistence of cyber threats targeting mobile devices.

The iPhone or iPad used for the update must be logged in with the same Apple ID associated with the Apple Developer Program registration. This requirement applies to future iOS and iPadOS versions, as configuration profiles will no longer provide access to developer previews and public betas.

Huawei‘s HarmonyOS operating system has achieved a major milestone in the Chinese market, according to data from research firm Counterpoint Research. In the first quarter of 2024, HarmonyOS surpassed Apple‘s iOS for the first time, becoming the second-largest mobile operating system in China.

The report highlights a significant rise in HarmonyOS market share, jumping from 8% in Q1 2023 to 17% in Q1 2024. Over the same period, iOS’s share declined from 20% to 16%. 

This is the first time since the first quarter of 2019 that iOS has seen a decrease in market share during the first quarter in China. The report partly attributes this decrease to the launch of new 5G smartphones from Huawei, which directly compete with Apple’s products.

HarmonyOS’s growth is not limited to China though. Globally, its market share doubled year-on-year, reaching 4% in Q1 2024, while Android and iOS both saw slight declines from 78% and 20% in Q1 2023 to 77% and 19%, respectively.

Despite this, Android managed a month-on-month rebound in Q1 2024. However, iOS’s share decreased from 23% in Q4 2023 to 19% in Q1 2024. According to Counterpoint, this dip is likely due to the seasonal fluctuations typical of iPhone releases.

HarmonyOS, on the other hand, is experiencing strong 5G adoption. According to Counterpoint, the adoption has increased from 9% in Q1 2023 to 50% in the first year this year. The report further suggests that as Huawei is currently focusing on localizing its supply chain, the trend is expected to continue.

Counterpoint’s findings align with a forecast report by TechInsights released in January 2024, which predicted HarmonyOS would overtake iOS and become the second-largest smartphone operating system in China by the end of the year.

Apple is planning a major update for its iPhone operating system, iOS 18, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. He says that the update could be the “biggest” software update in the iPhone’s history. 

Gurman shared this news in the subscriber-only Q&A section of his Power On newsletter. 

“I’m told that the new operating system is seen within the company as one of the biggest iOS updates — if not the biggest — in the company’s history,” he wrote.

Although he didn’t reveal many specifics about the features of iOS 18, he mentioned plans to share more details in the future.

But there are a few changes we are already expecting on the iOS. One of the anticipated features is support for Rich Communication Services (RCS) — a messaging standard that will allow for better communication between iPhones and Android devices. 

In November 2023, Apple announced its intention to support RCS in the Messages app on the iPhone starting “later” in 2024. And the timeframe likely coincides with the launch of iOS 18.

With RCS support, iPhone users will be able to send high-resolution photos and videos, enjoy read receipts and typing indicators, and even participate in group chats with both Android and iPhone users.

Moreover, Apple is also said to be working on generative AI technology and according to Gurman it “should improve how both Siri and the Messages app can field questions and auto-complete sentences.”

Gurman notes that Apple is also exploring integrating similar AI features for various other apps, including Apple Music, Pages, Keynote, and Xcode.

Likewise, according to The Information, Apple is planning to integrate large language models into Siri, which would allow users to automate complex tasks with deeper integration into the Shortcuts app. This feature is expected to be part of an iPhone software update in 2024, likely iOS 18.

These are just a few of the rumored features that are expected to be included in iOS 18. We expect more details to be revealed soon.

Starting in March this year with the release of iOS 17.4, Apple will allow third-party app stores on iOS for the first time. It will also allow developers to opt out of Apple’s in-app payment system. This means that iPhone users won’t be limited to getting apps solely from the Apple App Store, marking a major shift in how apps are distributed on iPhones. Apple has made such a significant change in response to the Digital Markets Act (DMA) in the European Union.

Apple confirms new fee structure for EU developers

Before the implementation of DMA, Apple charged a 30 percent commission rate for most App Store purchases, like app downloads and in-app items. However, smaller developers earning less than $1 million yearly were allowed to pay just 15 percent.

In the EU, Apple is changing the fees for iOS apps. Developers can now choose between a 17 percent commission (plus 3 percent if using Apple’s payment system) or a 10 percent commission (plus 3 percent) for small businesses, a significant cut from the previous 30 percent.

In addition, there is something called the Core Technology Fee (CTF) of €0.50 per annual install for high-volume apps (over one million installs per year). The CTF is charged per customer account for the first install within a year. Most developers won’t pay this fee, as it applies to a small percentage of apps.

Developers can now distribute apps outside the App Store, but the CTF still applies if they reach the volume threshold, regardless of the marketplace. The monopoly on in-app purchases is no longer there, with a 3 percent fee if developers choose to use it. Alternative app marketplaces must also pay the CTF for downloads. In addition, Apple will also have a stand on which app stores can be made available on its App Store.

Nikita Bier, co-founder of social-media start-ups Gas and tbh, said if a developer makes $10 million in sales, Apple’s cut under the new structure would be $6.2 million annually. After accounting for assumed expenses and taxes, the developer’s take-home amount would be $2 million, which is only 20% of their sales.

Bier highlighted that for many apps, especially those making less than $0.57 per user, the new fee structure may result in negative earnings, meaning the developer would owe money to Apple rather than making a profit. This has led Bier to state that, given these conditions, they would refrain from launching an app in Europe.

Although this issue seems to be affecting BMW users, there is a small difference. In BMW models, the NFC feature is also disrupted along with the phone, unlike in General Motors where this technology remains unaffected. As one post from “caduceus26” says, “Happy to know that it isn’t just me. My iPhone 12 Pro Max worked perfectly (every time) in my ’23 Chevy Traverse. I went to the iPhone 15 Pro Max about 6 weeks ago and the feature broke just as described in other comments: Charge for a few seconds and then stops – case on or off yields same results. I am currently on iOS 17.1.1 and have taken every update since the phone was purchased on 10/8/23.”

Some users have even taken their cars to the service center, suspecting a problem with their vehicles. However, no issues were found. Complaints have also been conveyed to Apple, but the company has not yet made any statements on the matter. Nevertheless, a resolution to the problem is expected shortly with the iOS 17.2 update.

The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max have been criticized for their poor thermal management and throttling under sustained load. But a new software update from Apple seems to have fixed these issues. 

Apple released the iOS 17.0.3 update for new iPhones earlier this week. After testing the iPhone 15 Pro Max with this new iOS version, Chinese reviewer “Ah Zheng Is Very Hard” found that the phone’s performance and thermals have improved significantly.

For instance, the GPU score on Geekbench 6 increased from 27,163 on iOS 17.0.2 to 27,381 on iOS 17.0.3, while CPU scores largely remained the same. This may not seem like a big difference, but gaming performance has definitely improved.

Playing Honor of Kings on the iPhone 15 Pro Max with iOS 17.0.3 resulted in an average frame rate of 116.9 frames per second (FPS), while the same game yielded 105.4 FPS on iOS 17.0.2. Last year’s iPhone 14 Pro Max averages 103 FPS on iOS 17.0.3, for comparison.

Likewise, the phone’s temperature while playing the game also dropped around 1°C on the back and 0.6°C on the front. Other games, such as Genshin Impact and NiShuiHan, also ran cooler after the update, with temperature differences of over 2°C. However, the reviewer didn’t share the frame rate numbers for these two games.

Apple’s iOS 17.0.3 update seems to have improved the thermal management and performance of the iPhone 15 Pro / Pro Max. If you have an iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max, we certainly recommend updating to iOS 17.0.3 to enjoy the improved performance.

Despite all the advertising claims about its titanium build quality and durability, the latest Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max has failed the durability test done by popular tech YouTuber, JerryRigEverything. The iPhone 15 Pro Max became the first iPhone to fail the durability test this decade. 

For context, the last iPhone which failed the durability test was the iPhone 6 Plus which was released back in 2014, which at that time, the iPhone 6 Plus was marred by scandals by the general public and tech enthusiasts alike, known most popularly as #BendGate, whereby the iPhone 6 Plus was known to bend in half in pockets or with extensive force applied due to its weaker aluminium build quality. 

Since the #BendGate fiasco, Apple has since improved the build quality of its iPhones with much stronger materials, such as the stronger 7000 series grade aluminium, surgical-grade stainless steel, and this year, Aerospace-grade Titanium for the iPhone 15 Pro series.

However, despite the claimed stronger materials in the iPhone 15 Pro series, in his latest YouTube video, JerryRigEverything has put the latest iPhone 15 Pro Max smartphone through his durability test gauntlet to find that the device is not as durable as the marketing would lead buyers to believe.

The iPhone 15 Pro Max passes the scratch test, which means that the Ceramic Shield glass on the iPhone starts scratching at Level 6 with deeper grooves on Level 7 on the Mohs scale of durability. However, upon starting the bend test, the iPhone 15 Pro Max immediately cracks in less than 5 seconds into the test with minimal pressure applied.

The crack happened immediately at the back of the device whereby the back glass is shown to be completely cracked with glass coming out. The camera island glass cracked in the test as well, showing that the rear glass panel is definitely not pressure-resistant in real-life scenarios such as accidentally dropping the iPhone onto the floor or sitting on the iPhone on the couch.

Jerry is shocked at the poor durability of the iPhone 15 Pro Max and concludes that the iPhone 15 Pro Max has indeed failed his durability test. He advises that if the iPhone 15 Pro Max glass does indeed crack, users should send the device for repair for 200 USD at the Apple Store.

He also tested the standard smaller iPhone 15 Pro at the end of the video, and thankfully, unlike its bigger sibling, the smaller iPhone 15 Pro passes his durability test unscathed with no defects or cracks.

Apple has released a new security update for its iPhone, iPad, MacBook, and Apple Watch to address two zero-day vulnerabilities. Zero-day vulnerabilities are security flaws that are unknown to the software vendor and have not yet been patched. This makes them a serious threat, as attackers can exploit them without any resistance from the software.

The vulnerabilities addressed in the latest update are CVE-2023-41064 and CVE-2023-41061. They allow attackers to install malware on a device by loading a malicious image or attachment. The malware can then be used to steal data, track the user’s location, or take control of the device.

These vulnerabilities were first reported by the Citizen Lab, a spyware research group, at the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy at the University of Toronto. Citizen Lab says that the vulnerabilities were being used to install NSO Group’s Pegasus mercenary spyware onto the iPhone. Not in the know, Pegasus is a powerful spyware tool that infects a phone and sends back data, including photos, messages, and audio / video recordings.

So it’s recommended that all users update their devices to the latest version of iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and watchOS as soon as possible. The updates can be downloaded from the Settings app. 

This is the second zero-day vulnerability that Apple has patched in recent months. In July, Apple released an update to address a zero-day vulnerability that was being exploited by attackers to install malware on iPhones and iPads.

The frequency of zero-day vulnerabilities is increasing, and it is important for users to keep their devices up to date with the latest security patches. By doing so, they can help to protect themselves from these serious threats.

A new report from GreenSmartphones has revealed that Android users encounter fewer usability issues than their iOS counterparts, suggesting Android may be a more intuitive operating system. The report analyzed search engine data, tracking the number of times users of both systems searched for help with basic operations such as screen recording, screenshots, and location sharing.

Debunking Myths: Android vs. iOS in Common Operations

The findings indicated that iPhone users in the United States searched for assistance with these basic functions approximately 358,000 times per month, a staggering 58% more often than Android users. In particular, the largest discrepancy was seen in searches for “how to erase all content and settings,” with iOS users searching six times more frequently than Android users.

The survey compared 12 common operations, and Android outperformed iOS in ten out of these twelve areas, with fewer users needing to look up instructions. Android only fell behind iOS in taking screenshots and scanning QR codes, where iOS appeared more intuitive to users.

On average, there were 226,000 monthly searches made by Android users for help with basic tasks compared to 358,000 for iOS users, a difference of 58.41%. This is despite the nearly equivalent user base size for both operating systems in the U.S.

Although the longstanding debate over the superiority between Android and iOS continues, with arguments for Android’s flexibility and customization against iOS’s speed and long-term security, this study suggests that Android may be easier for the average user to operate.

The research was based on analyzing Google search volume in the United States over the previous 12 months and used the same keyword format for both operating systems to maintain consistency.

At the WWDC 2023, Apple took the wraps off its highly anticipated mixed reality headset, Vision Pro, along with the 15-inch MacBook Air powered by M2 chip.

The Cupertino-based technology giant also showcased the latest operating systems that the company will release later this fall and has confirmed the list of devices that will be left behind.

The company has announced the iOS 17 operating system for Apple iPhones and confirmed that the iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and iPhone X won’t be getting this newer version of the software. The update requires the smartphone to be running the A12 Bionic chipset or later.

The older smartphones that are eligible for the iOS 17 include iPhone XR, XS, XS Max, and iPhone SE (second generation). Similarly, those using the iPhone 5th generation or the first generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro won’t be able to install the new iPadOS 17.

With the newer version of the operating system, Apple is bringing features like Live Voicemail transcripts, the StandBy display mode, and better autocorrect, among others.

Some of the features coming to the iOS 17 include Smart Home Lock Screen which can turn iPhone into a “smart-home display” when not in use. It can show various information, including calendar appointments, weather data, notifications, and more. There’s also Contact Posters that allow users to customize how they’re represented on other people’s phones.

It is also bringing Live Voicemail to transcribe voicemails in real-time. For safety, there’s Check-In, a feature that will let users automatically notify family and friends when they have made it home safely. iOS 17 also introduces a new Journal app for sourcing memories using people, places, activities, music, and photos that users can add to daily journal entries.

Apple Maps Lock Screen directions could get a new look in iOS 17

Apple is reportedly working on a new Apple Maps Live Activity feature for the Lock Screen in its upcoming iOS 17 update. This claim was made by a Twitter user named @analyst941. The leaker, who has shared similar leaks in the past, stated in their post, “Love it or don’t, Apple doesn’t care – this is the new Maps ‘Live Activity’ for Lock Screen (all iPhones). – Seamless transition when unlocking. – View notifications over the map by swiping up as usual. – Shows most Lock Screen elements until unlocked (except widgets as far as I know).”

Up until now, people using the Maps have always had to keep the app open to track their destination. With this updated Lock Screen design, users will be able to minimize the Apple Maps display to the size of the music player widget, and a single tap will quickly expand it to full size. Although the Lock Screen Map display won’t be interactive, it will dynamically update to show users their current location and navigation directions.

What users are really curious about is whether this feature is limited to Apple Maps or not. As you know, although Apple has made significant progress in the field of maps, it still lags behind Google Maps and even Yandex. For this reason, many iPhone owners prefer alternative apps instead of the default Apple Maps. Q1 Smartphone Sales in China Decline for Apple and Android Competitors

China is the world’s most populous country. As a result, securing a leading position in such a massive market is the dream of every smartphone manufacturer. Both Apple and other Android smartphone manufacturers are working diligently to sell more devices in the country. However, looking at the situation in the first quarter of 2023, both Apple and Android brands experienced a decline.

Apple, the top-selling brand in the first quarter, secured a 20% market share. However, its overall shipments in China fell to 13.3 million units, a 3% decrease compared to the same period in 2022. Other leading brands in the market also saw a decline in sales, causing total smartphone shipments to drop by 11% year-on-year, amounting to 67.2 million units. This marked the lowest quarterly total since 2013.

Although Apple remained the best-selling brand during this period, its total market share fell by 3 percentage points compared to the previous year. Android brands Oppo and Vivo, which follow Apple as the second and third best-selling brands, experienced shipment reductions of 10% and 7%, respectively.

Honor and Xiaomi Corp, companies that specialize in more affordable phone models, faced even more significant declines in their sales. Shipments for these companies dropped by 35% and 20%, respectively, suggesting that consumers were hesitant to make phone purchases, even at lower price points.

China’s GDP grew by 4.5% in the first quarter, surpassing expectations. Policymakers in Beijing are currently working on strategies to further stimulate demand. Despite this, economists anticipate that the majority of Chinese consumers and businesses will continue to spend cautiously throughout the year.

Apple has been forced to disclose the monthly active user count of its App Store in Europe in order to comply with the EU’s Digital Services Act. The disclosure revealed that the iOS App Store has 101 million users in Europe, while iPadOS has 23 million, indicating the immense popularity of Apple’s mobile devices in the region.

iOS App Store boasts 101 million active users in Europe

While the Mac App Store has 6 million users, the tvOS App Store has 1 million, and the watchOS App Store has less than 1 million users, Apple’s disclosure highlights the dominance of its mobile devices in the European market. In addition, less than 1 million people in Europe use Apple Books and Podcasts for paid subscriptions each month, according to Apple’s report.

The EU’s Digital Services Act aims to regulate “very large online platforms”, which are defined as platforms with over 45 million monthly active users. While Apple considers each operating system’s App Store as a separate platform, only the iPhone iOS App Store is classified as a “very large” online platform, with over 101 million monthly active users in Europe alone.

In response to the Digital Services Act, Apple has pledged to “adjust” all its App Stores in Europe to comply with the regulations, even though the law only requires compliance for the iOS App Store. The regulations set by the DSA include protecting children from advertising, limiting the spread of misinformation, and more, aligning with Apple’s goal of protecting consumers from illegal content.

However, the Digital Markets Act, another EU regulation, may force Apple to support alternative app stores and app sideloading on the iPhone, at least for its European customers. This could potentially have a significant impact on Apple’s app store revenue, as the company currently takes a 15%-30% commission on all app sales and in-app purchases made through its platform.

With further regulations on the horizon, it remains to be seen how Apple will adapt to the changing landscape of the digital marketplace.
