Google’s Foldable Fails Big Once Again: Almost Catches Fire This Time

Known YouTuber JerryRigEverything recently shared a new video where they put the Pixel 10 Pro Fold through his extreme durability test. He claimed that Google’s most expensive smartphone might be the weakest foldable phone he has ever tested. Starting with the IP68 rating, Google impressed with the first ever smartphone with a dustproof design. But in the video, Zack noted that the display is dustproof; however, the hinge is “definitely” not, as you can hear a nasty crunch, which likely caused finer particles to make their way inside the folding mechanism.

Things also get worse when we get to the bend test. Despite the structural weakness caused by the antenna lines near the hinge on its predecessors, Google decided to change nothing with its latest Pixel 10 Pro Fold. So unsurprisingly, the device snapped on this antenna line when pushed to its limit. In comparison, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 received plenty of praise during this test, with an impressively tough design.

All of this leads to the worst part of this video, where the $1,799 Pixel foldable starts smoking after the battery integrity gets breached during the bend test. JRE states that he subjects all of the smartphone to the same level lof torture, but this is the first time in his decade long stress testing career that a smartphone from a major brand has actually blown up.

The Red Magic 8 Pro was among the first flagships to pass JerryRigEverything’s test in 2023. Now, the YouTuber has tested the latest Red Magic 9 Pro for its durability. The Red Magic 9 Pro has proven to be among the first gaming flagships in 2023 that appear to have passed JerryRigEverything’s test.

The latest gaming powerhouse appears to be reliable, as revealed by the results of the tough and demanding durability test. Despite being subjected to intensive scratch, burn, and break tests, the phone’s screen remained sturdy throughout. After the first two phases of the process, the gaming smartphone’s 6.8-inch screen remained stable.

However, at a level, deeper grooves were visible. But the phone’s screen exhibited exceptional heat resistance.The YouTube video shows an excellent perspective on the smartphone’s under-display camera component.

The Red Magic 9 Pro (review) front camera survived the heat and is undoubtedly an improved model that seems to outperform certain flagships, including the Z Fold. During testing, there were a few possible issues with the transparent panel of the RedMagic 9 Pro void colorway. However, its inbuilt ventilation system and the 3.5 mm audio jack are two of its weak points.

The Red Magic 9 Pro also showed some outstanding bend test results. During the bend test, the display of the smartphone remained unaffected. The smartphone has set the standard for gaming devices to be introduced next year because it has survived rather well. It continues to be Red Magic’s greatest product to date in the category.

Red Magic fans may relax in the meantime knowing that the 9 Pro appears to be clean as it is robust, with its strengthened active cooling system and steel frame appearing to be especially resistant to bending.

Despite all the advertising claims about its titanium build quality and durability, the latest Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max has failed the durability test done by popular tech YouTuber, JerryRigEverything. The iPhone 15 Pro Max became the first iPhone to fail the durability test this decade. 

For context, the last iPhone which failed the durability test was the iPhone 6 Plus which was released back in 2014, which at that time, the iPhone 6 Plus was marred by scandals by the general public and tech enthusiasts alike, known most popularly as #BendGate, whereby the iPhone 6 Plus was known to bend in half in pockets or with extensive force applied due to its weaker aluminium build quality. 

Since the #BendGate fiasco, Apple has since improved the build quality of its iPhones with much stronger materials, such as the stronger 7000 series grade aluminium, surgical-grade stainless steel, and this year, Aerospace-grade Titanium for the iPhone 15 Pro series.

However, despite the claimed stronger materials in the iPhone 15 Pro series, in his latest YouTube video, JerryRigEverything has put the latest iPhone 15 Pro Max smartphone through his durability test gauntlet to find that the device is not as durable as the marketing would lead buyers to believe.

The iPhone 15 Pro Max passes the scratch test, which means that the Ceramic Shield glass on the iPhone starts scratching at Level 6 with deeper grooves on Level 7 on the Mohs scale of durability. However, upon starting the bend test, the iPhone 15 Pro Max immediately cracks in less than 5 seconds into the test with minimal pressure applied.

The crack happened immediately at the back of the device whereby the back glass is shown to be completely cracked with glass coming out. The camera island glass cracked in the test as well, showing that the rear glass panel is definitely not pressure-resistant in real-life scenarios such as accidentally dropping the iPhone onto the floor or sitting on the iPhone on the couch.

Jerry is shocked at the poor durability of the iPhone 15 Pro Max and concludes that the iPhone 15 Pro Max has indeed failed his durability test. He advises that if the iPhone 15 Pro Max glass does indeed crack, users should send the device for repair for 200 USD at the Apple Store.

He also tested the standard smaller iPhone 15 Pro at the end of the video, and thankfully, unlike its bigger sibling, the smaller iPhone 15 Pro passes his durability test unscathed with no defects or cracks.

Foldable smartphones are known to offer some innovative tech but also have its own share of drawbacks. These models are typically classed among the most expensive mobile devices and are not very durable either. But while the pricing issue will likely take some time, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 takes on the latter notion with its Herculean build.

Is the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 just built different?

In a recent JerryRigEverything video, the South Korean tech giant’s Galaxy Z Fold 5 garnered a positive review in the durability test. The video shows Zack putting the foldable phone through a number of different endurance tests. This ranges from a scratch test, a dust folding test, and a burn test. The Galaxy Z Fold 5 survived all of these tests and managed to work normally for the most part.

However, the most interesting part of the video was the bend test. To check if the ultra-premium device can survive bending in the opposite direction, Zack bent the device when it is closed and opened. This is the test that the Google Pixel Fold and the Motorola Razr+ didn’t survive. On the other hand, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 managed to get through this test without breaking a sweat.

The device didn’t break from anywhere or face any major crack or snap. So safe to say, this foldable phone will not let you down. In his own words, the device defies all expectations since its beyond what Samsung intended the phone to survive.

Foldable smartphones are still a niche category in the market and many still worry about their overall durability. However, it seems like the latest Razr 40 Ultra from Motorola is surprisingly stronger than it looks.

Moto Razr 40 Ultra Durability Test: Does it Survive?

In the latest JerryRigEverything video, the company’s flagship foldable smartphone was put through a number of grueling tests. This included the scratch test, burn test, and even the bend test. Starting off with the scratch test, we see that the Moto Razr 40 Ultra screen started showing visual signs of scratches quite easily even at levels 2 and 3. However, the outer panel did a much better job, lasting till round 7.

In the burn test, the outer panel again outlasted the primary flexible screen by surviving till 20 seconds. Meanwhile, the inner screen lasted just 6 seconds. During the scratch test, the device had its power and volume buttons scratached, but these still performance normally. To test the IP52 rating, Zack also covered the foldable phone with a lot of dust. But this didn’t seem to affect the device’s folding mechanism at all.

For the final test, the Moto Razr 40 Ultra was put through the bend test to test its durability. The smartphone’s flexible panel help up since it managed to not break or show any issues. However, the outer panel’s glass was completely shattered. Despite all of this abuse, the device still performed normally.

The latest video from Zack Nelson, the popular tech YouTuber behind the JerryRigEverything channel has been highly anticipated. Since the YouTuber is finally testing the OnePlus 11 to see if the company’s latest flagship phone snaps for the third time.

For those unaware, the OnePlus 10 Pro and the 10T model that launched back in 2022 both failed the bend test of Zack’s bend test in the durability video. Both devices snapped in two and the new change in camera design was found to be the primary cause behind this structural issue. However, it appears that the Chinese smartphone maker managed to break this curse, with its latest premium grade handset barely surviving the test.

Looking at the video, we can see the OnePlus 11 being put through the usual scratch, burn, and bend tests that we know JerryRigEverything channel to showcase. The device expected as one would expect for all the tests except the bend one. This was the “moment of truth” part of the video as we can see the device clearly flexing to the point that its rear panel starts cracking up. However, unlike the two models that launched before it, the OnePlus 11 held onto its structural integrity.

Although there were some key points to note in the video. First of all, the scratch test on the display area right above the under screen fingerprint scanner usually doesn’t affect the functionality. But the scratches on the 11 model caused the sensor to be unable to rear Zack’s finger entirely. Notably, the OnePlus 11 showed the most sign of distress in the area right below the camera module. In other words, this region is still prone to cracks and bending related issues than other parts. Despite all this, it is still great news that the brand did not strike out on the third flagship phone in a row.

The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is the latest flagship device from the tech giant. While some may be disappointed with the similarity in design to its predecessor, the Galaxy S22 Ultra, Samsung has made some noteworthy refinements that are truly impressive. Whilst the camera setup and the design are the major overhauls this year, one of the major changes is the seamless process of removing the battery, a feature that many tech enthusiasts have been waiting for.

YouTuber Zach from JerryRigEverything put the Galaxy S23 Ultra to the test and was pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to dismantle the device with just one hand. In the past, removing the battery from a smartphone was a difficult task, with manufacturers using a lot of adhesive to hold the battery in place. This meant that professionals and novices alike had to use various tools and alcohol to soften the adhesive and carefully remove the battery without rupturing it.

However, with the Galaxy S23 Ultra, Samsung has made this process much simpler. By only requiring the removal of the front glass assembly, wireless charging coil, screws, and ribbon cables, the 5,000mAh battery can be easily accessed and removed in just seconds. Even non-professionals can remove the battery with ease, Zach stated in his video.

While there was a small hiccup during the teardown process where Zach almost tore off the ribbon cable, he claimed that Samsung’s implementation of this change was worth the wait. He even stated that he had been waiting for eight long years for Samsung to make this small but significant improvement.

Nonetheless, the presence of pull-out tabs in the less expensive Galaxy S23 and S23 Plus models gives hope that Samsung will make this feature standard in all of their smartphones, including the highly anticipated Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 set to launch later this year.

The latest smartphone to get deconstructed by Zack for his YouTube channel, JerryRigEverything was the Nubia Red Magic 8 Pro. It has a host of top-of-the-line features at a fraction of the ‘flagship smartphone price’. Surprisingly, it fared quite well during its teardown. 

Upon removing the back cover using heat and suction, the transparent glass was removed, revealing a very interesting design. The phone has an array of RGB LEDs for aesthetic purposes. Interestingly, the phone has T3 screws instead of regular Philips Head screws for aesthetic reasons. The lower loudspeaker is attached to the bottom plastic section of the phone. The upper segment has two parts, the portion containing the upper loudspeaker and the other containing the air duct channel. The metal-air duct channel acts as a heatsink and gets cooled by the air on top of it, thanks to the 2000 RPM cooling fan. The casing is somewhat meshed in order to prevent dust and debris from entering the device, however, it’s definitely not built to keep water out. 

The phone has a dual-cell battery. It was removed without any fuss, with one battery connector unplugged. Zack pointed out that the unplugged connector might be for the China-only variant of the smartphone, which charges at 80W instead of the standard 65W. The camera was still plugged into the motherboard when it was removed, which was interesting. The back of the phone was rich with copious amounts of thermal paste, and a massive copper vapor chamber to regulate the heat. The 2MP macro camera was a little separated from the rest of the camera unit. Apart from the headphone jack at the top, the bottom half housed another vibration motor, making it clear that the device has two vibration motors, possibly for gaming.

The fins on the fan blade are made of translucent plastic. The square contact pads rest on the motherboard of the device. Lastly, the edge-to-edge OLED display was pretty interesting. When the light was shone through the camera unit and light sensors that sit underneath the pixels, the camera sensors were able to compensate for the yellow shift from the lens. When Zack put the phone back together after an intense teardown, the Nubia Red Magic 8 Pro still turned on and functioned perfectly in spite of the destroyed cooling system.

Galaxy S23 Ultra is one of the latest flagship smartphones on the scene right now. With all Samsung is doing to push the phone through heavy marketing, Zack from JerryRigEverything provided an initial review of the device after surface-level durability tests, ahead of the official teardown. The tests brought Galaxy S23 Ultra’s structural prowess to light. 

Zack starts off by highlighting the fact that the Galaxy S23 Ultra packaging is made of a 100% recycled paper box. Since Samsung brags about how it uses sustainable materials in its products, Zack takes a dig at the phone’s color tone. Where the bold print suggests that ‘natural dye’ is used for the device’s color, fine print suggests that only 10% of it is natural. It is even more amusing to see Zack further scratch away (no pun intended) at the device’s glass panel. Where Samsung markets the display as being made out of recycled glass, Corning data reveals that the glass is only 22% pre-consumer recycled glass. 

The glass begins to scratch with materials at a Mohs level of 6 and shows deeper scratches at level 7 — exactly the same results he got from the S22 Ultra last year. The dye scrapes off from the sides when scratched, and the metal side buttons are removable. Once Zack snaps the S-Pen, he elaborates on how it functions. After talking a little about the camera setup, which is undoubtedly the biggest improvement from last year, Zack subjected the screen to a heat test using a lighter. The phone handled the heat quite well, not crumbling even after 60 seconds of constant flame. Lastly, the Galaxy S23 Ultra passed the bend test with flying colors, being labeled as “structually sound” by JerryRigEverything. 

The Galaxy S23 Ultra sports a tall 6.8-inch AMOLED display. This panel features a QHD+ (3,088 x 1,440) resolution with a dynamic refresh rate that can go from high 120Hz to even as low as 1Hz thanks to its LTPO technology. The Galaxy S23 Ultra’s display is one of its notable aspects and offers a high 2,000 nits of peak brightness, which is more than the 1,750 nits offered by its predecessor. This panel features Corning’s Gorilla Glass Victus 2, as described previously. It is equipped with Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC. This processor is paired with either 8GB or 12GB of RAM and 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB of internal storage. It features a quad camera setup: 200 MP primary sensor + 10 MP (periscope telephoto) + 10 MP (telephoto) + 12 MP (ultrawide), while on the front, there is a 40 MP (wide) camera.

Almost a month after its official launch, the Google Pixel 7 Pro has made it to popular YouTuber JerryRigEverything’s chopping block for a durability test. And spoiler alert: the device has some serious structural problems.

The Pixel 7 Pro is entirely constructed out of recycled aluminum, as demonstrated in the JerryRigEverything video. The phone looks classy and gorgeous because the side frame is made of metal and not plastic. However, the video does point out that the bump on the rear camera is a concern.

Google Pixel 7 Pro durability test

The display, which is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus, served as the starting point for the durability test of the Pixel 7 Pro. We find scratches at level 6, similar to the majority of phones, and deeper markings at level 7. This confirms the phone does indeed have scratch-resistant glass, which is often expected from a flagship product these days.

The second portion of the video demonstrates the Pixel 7 Pro’s metal frame, which also houses the power and volume rocker controls. The back camera bump is also constructed of metal but has been painted to give it a distinctive dual-color tone design. However, the core issue is that the bump quickly scratches even after a very brief contact with keys, coins, or any other pocket things. Particularly after paying a premium fee, this looks terrible.

The glass on the back panel is also prone to scratches, and they are very noticeable. The burn test is the next step. Under a flame from a regular lighter, the pixels of the OLED panel burn at the 20-second mark and don’t return to normal. The display is still operational, though.

The bend test comes next in the video. Even though the phone doesn’t bend and split in half, we can hear fractures near the camera bump, and the antenna line flexes somewhat, leaving a permanent bend on the Pixel 7 Pro. This means it’s best to use the phone with a case because the phone’s frame around the camera isn’t very sturdy.

Earlier this year, the OnePlus 10 Pro went through a disastrous durability test where it snapped in two during the bend test. So naturally, one would assume that the company’s second flagship model of this year, the OnePlus 10T, would arrive with improvements in design. Well, you might be disappointed.

The popular tech YouTuber JerryRigEverything shared a new video in which he put the OnePlus 10T model to the durability test. In the video, he put the smartphone through the usual durability tests like scratches, flames, bend, and even a bend test. Unfortunately for the Chinese smartphone maker, its first flagship of this year failed the bend test and had snapped in two.

The YouTuber pointed out that the cause for this is likely structural point of failure beneath the camera module. So, one would naturally assume that the company made changes to this design to improve its structural integrity. However, this scene was almost perfectly mirrored with the OnePlus 10T model as well. The smartphone’s display did survive the level 6 of the Moh’s hardness scale on the front and back, and the flame tests did not leave any permanent mark on the OLED display either.

However, the disappointment surfaced during the bend test. Here, the 10T model snapped in the exact same way as the previous 10 Pro. The frame cracked right under the camera module under pressure. The video showed that Zach was able to completely tear down the smartphone apart from his bare hands. He managed to separate the display from the chasis and even remove the cameras from the device as well. In other words, an impromptu tear down video during a durability test.

Foldable smartphones are still a long way from becoming mainstream but continue to grow more popular as their design and build quality improves. Samsung reported it sold four times as many foldables in 2021 as it did in 2020, which is a clear indication of their success. Of course, OPPO didn’t want to be left behind in the competition and came up with an extremely compelling foldable offering of their own called the Find N. Being priced at around $1,500, many would naturally want to know how durable the thing is, and that’s where JerryRigEverything comes in.

As usual, the durability test video kicks off with a scratch test, and that’s something the exterior of the OPPO Find N simply aced. The Gorilla Glass Victus used on the outside is no joke and rates 6 on the Mohs hardness scale, meaning you should be able to keep both keys and phone in your pocket sans worry — although that’s definitely not recommended.

The hardness seems to be equal on both the front and rear of the phone but the textured glass back feels especially tough, actually wearing down the razor used to scratch test it.

Unfortunately, the same does not hold true for the inside of the OPPO Find N, which out of necessity is made of an odd combination of plastic and glass. To protect the glass underneath, a thin plastic film has been applied on top, meaning the inner display can be scratched even with your fingernail (like the case with any other foldable). While this may sound worrying, you should fare just fine — unless you’re planning on using the inside display panel as a nail filer.

Moving on to the bend test, the OPPO Find N once again surprises, failing to show any signs of damage despite Zach bending it the wrong way with all his might. OPPO says that it has used a ‘Flexion Hinge’ made up of 136 components and it’s pretty clear that the mechanism is built as tough as a tank.

Finally, the OPPO Find N is nearly buried in dirt to check if grains interfere with all of its moving parts. Even when repeatedly opened and closed with dirt rubbed onto the hinges, the foldable smartphone folds and unfolds without the slightest creak.

All in all, OPPO has outdone itself here despite the Find N being its very first foldable offering, and we see a bright future ahead for such devices.

China-based ZTE recently launched its ZTE Axon 30 smartphone which comes with an under-display camera sensor for offering a true full-screen experience to users. This also marks the second such smartphone from the company.

The major difference between the in-display camera technology used in this model and in the last year’s phone is the display quality. The Axon 30 comes with a screen offering about 400PPI pixel density, almost double the pixel density on last year’s Axon 20. As for the durability, JerryRigEverything has put it to the test.

First of all, the front-facing camera, which is housed under the display, is pretty much invisible, unlike its predecessor. This is because of the high pixel density display. However, the camera performance isn’t as good as the regular camera sensor.

The phone’s display, when exposed to flame for about 20 seconds or more, forms a white-colored spot forming, which appears to be permanent given that the company has opted to use an OLED panel.

In the scratch test, the screen starts showing scratches at level six while deeper grooves on the display start forming at level seven. The screen area on top of the camera sensor is also immune to minor scratches. The in-display fingerprint sensor keeps working properly even after level seven grooves.

The smartphone is built using plastic but the power button and volume rocker keys are metallic. The camera module on the back is protected by a layer of glass and the separating the camera module from the back cover is made of metal.

The ZTE Axon 30 also passed the bend test, which is surprising given how much the phone bends. While bending the phone backward, there was a sound of something breaking inside but the device kept performing normally. Overall, the build quality is quite good for a smartphone costing about $500.

OnePlus is no longer a brand that offers just premium flagship smartphones but also has a lineup of budget smartphones under OnePlus Nord branding. The OnePlus Nord N200 is the latest device in this series, priced at around $240.

With such low pricing, it’s obvious that the company compromised on some aspects of the smartphone. However, it seems that the device is good enough to survive JerryRigEverything’s durability test.

It’s noteworthy that during the bend test, something inside the phone seems to have snapped but what exactly happened has not been revealed by the YouTuber yet and for that, we will have to wait a bit longer. However, after the test, the device seems to be working properly even if something has broken internally.

In the scratch test for the display, the screen starts showing scratches from level 6 while level 7 starts having deeper grooves on the display panel which isn’t bad. This indicates that OnePlus opted for a glass display instead of a plastic panel.

The frame of the OnePlus Nord N200 is made up of plastic which can easily be scratched or cut off using a sharp object. Not just the frame, other components of the smartphone placed on the sides of the phone, including the volume button and a fingerprint scanner are also made using plastic materials.

The phone’s back panel, which appears to be made up of glass with a matte finish, is also made up of plastic, prone to scratches. The display of the smartphone survived the burn test. Although the screen went black for a certain area due to it, it started working again after a few seconds without any issues.

The Black Shark 4 has just been spotted in a recent teardown video. The device was taken apart, which revealed key parts and components of the latest gaming smartphone from the brand.

In a new video from JerryRigEverything, we can observe the internals of the device as Zack methodically breaks down the handset. Since it has a plastic rear panel, the gaming smartphone is easier to open, using heat to get past the adhesive. One of the first thing that can be seen after removing the back panel is the shoulder mounted buttons that works through a magnetic mechanism. As the device is a gaming handset, we can also find a heat pipe that helps dissipate heat that seems to be aluminum rather than copper.

The Black Shark 4 is powered by a large 4,500mAh battery pack that comprises of two separate cells that are combined together. This is easily removed via pull tabs and disconnecting the wires. Zack even disconnects and removes the camera module of the device, including its primary and wide angle lenses. Taking a closer look at the magnetic system for the side mounted trigger buttons, these require three different pieces that move the mechanism that is powered by a magnet.

The Black Shark 4 is a relatively affordable gaming smartphone that starts from under 500 US Dollars. During the teardown Zack also added that its predecessor had one of the most complex internal housings, while this year it had a lot more streamlined and easier teardown experience overall. Lenovo launched the Legion Dual Phone 2 on Thursday as a successor to the Legion Dual Phone that was announced last year as the brand’s first gaming phone. The Legion Dual Phone 2 is targeted at gamers and that is reflected in the design which makes the phone look like a futuristic handheld gaming rig. But how durable is the device?

Well, JerryRigEverything has provided us an answer, thanks to Lenovo who sent him a unit for the usual scratch, burn, and bend tests. The Legion Dual Phone 2 was able to withstand the scratch test which reveals the presence of a solid glass over the display and a metal frame. The phone also didn’t perform badly on the burn test as the screen began changing color after 33 seconds under the flame and didn’t fully recover after the flame is extinguished.

However, the bend test is where things went south for Lenovo’s flagship gaming phone. It took only a slight pressure applied by Zack Nelson for the phone to snap into two just by the side of the secondary display. As stated earlier, the Legion Dual Phone 2 utilizes a metal frame and one would have expected it to more solid but that didn’t out to be the case, apparently due to the dual battery design it utilizes.

The phone actually snapped along the antenna band line that is made of plastic. The same thing happened when the reviewer applied pressure on the other side of the secondary display. it snapped along the antenna band line. Perhaps, Lenovo will have to reinforce that area but the phone is reportedly on sale already in China.

Although it is unlikely that anyone would go snapping his/her device in the real sense, the device is supposed to have a much studier frame that can withstand such stress. If a user accidentally sits on it while in the back pocket, a similar thing can happen.

Overall, the Legion Dual Phone 2 is a good phone specs-wise and even in terms of the design. We can’t say the same thing about its durability but expect Lenovo to do something about that.  We’ll keep you updated on this issue if any new development pops up. Meanwhile, check out the video below.

OnePlus recently launched its next-generation flagship lineup, the OnePlus 9 series and the top-end device in the series is the OnePlus 9 Pro. Soon after the announcement, JerryRigEverything shared a video showcasing the phone’s durability test.

To protect it from scratches, the phone comes with a screen protector pre-installed. After removing the film from the top, it started scratching from level 6 while deeper grooves started forming at level 7, which is pretty standard.

The device also comes with an optical in-display fingerprint sensor and even after scratching the screen at level 7, the sensor works fine without any issues, which is impressive but not surprising for a flagship device.

The OnePlus 9 Pro has a metal build and the buttons on the phone are also made up of metal, making the device more durable than the plastic body. Further, the phone is rated IP68, making it water and dust-resistant.

The highlight of the device is the camera module for which the company has partnered with Hasselblad this time. There are four sensors on the back, along with an LED flash, and it’s good to see that scratching the camera module doesn’t affect the phone.

The final test performed on the device was the bend test to check the phone’s durability. It was tested by trying to bend the smartphone both inwards and outways. The device survived both tests without any issues, not even a crack.

ASUS launched its fourth-generation gaming smartphone — ASUS ROG Phone 5 series earlier this month. The lineup includes three devices — ROG Phone 5, ROG Phone 5 Pro, and ROG Phone 5 Ultimate.

Now, YouTube channel JerryRigEverything conducted a durability test of the ASUS ROG Phone 5 but to the surprise of many, the device failed the test. A premium high-end gaming smartphone, which is made for rough usage, should have better durability.

When Jerry tried to bend the smartphone, without applying the full force, the phone’s vibratory went haywire and the bottom of the display started facing issues. A little more bend on the front made the display stopped working. When the phone was bent on the back, the glass-coated back panel cracked and the phone was dead.

However, the phone survived a few other tests, including the scratch test and the heat test. But it ultimately failed the durability test given that the smartphone was dead after performing the bend test on the device.

The ASUS ROG Phone 5 series come powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SoC paired with LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 storage. The standard and Pro model max at 16GB RAM and 512GB internal storage, while the Ultimate version comes with a whopping 18GB RAM, similar to the RedMagic 6 Pro Special Edition.

On the front, the phones in the lineup come with a 6.78-inch FHD+ Samsung Super AMOLED Display (E4) with up to 144Hz refresh rate, 24.3ms touch latency, 300Hz touch sampling rate, and an in-screen fingerprint sensor.

As for the optics, the devices feature a triple camera setup on the back consisting of a 64MP Sony IMX686 primary sensor, a 13MP ultra-wide unit, and a 5MP macro shooter. There is also a 24MP front-facing camera for selfies and video calls.

The devices run the latest Android 11 operating system out-of-the-box with both ZenUI and ROG UI on top. The phones are powered by a dual-3000mAh (6,000mAh) battery with support for 65W fast charging and Qualcomm Quick Charge 5.0.

The Google Pixel 5 series is the company’s 2020 flagship lineup. While the search giant claims that the device is made out of metal, a recent durability test video revealed that the metal is actually buried under layers of plastic.

Known YouTube tech based content creator, JerryRigEverything, took to hunting down this metal that Google promised. In the video, we can observe him stress test and scratch test the Pixel 5. Apparently, the YouTuber wanted to find out for himself whether the company’s claims of using 100 percent recycled aluminum was true or not. Notably, since the Pixel 5 supported wireless charging, the claims from Google of an all metal device was already under scrutiny.

Apart from the power button, the rest of the smartphone is covered by layers of plastic. Google calls this finish, “bio resin,” which is just another name for plastic alloy. But, the device does have metal underneath all of these layers, although, one would have to dig around considerably. The video also reveals that once you go deep enough, you finally hit the wireless charging coils and the battery right underneath it.

Unfortunately, digging too deep had the YouTuber hit the battery, which caused fumes to come out of the rear. So, we advise you to not try this at home. To sum things up, Google did manage to make the device feel like metal, but its all just a clever trick that hides those fancy layers of plastic. You can check out the video yourselves above.

In the video, the two iPhones were subjected to the scratch test on the Mohs scale of hardness. While the Ceramic Shield screens have better shatter resistance, scratches does appear by level 6 but it is less noticeable. Another notable finding was that the iPhones survived a 50 second lighter test, which caused no permanent damaged either unlike any other smartphone with an OLED panel.

This might be another additional protection from the ceramic molecules on the display’s glass, although, that is just a speculation. Overall, the Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max and iPhone 12 mini performed quite well and received praise for their durability. These handsets didn’t bend either, meaning, the Cupertino based giant placed an emphasis on the devices’ structures and build quality.

Microsoft recently launched its much-awaited Surface Duo smartphone which comes with dual displays and is powered by the Android operating system. The device has already passed JerryRigEverything’s Durability test and today we will be taking a look inside the device, thanks to the teardown video.

The first thing you notice about the phone is the dual displays and holding them together is the hinge. JerryRigsEveryhting says that the hinge on the device is pretty awesome and offers 360-degree functionality.

Removing the display panels showcases the phone’s internals. You will notice that the device packs two batteries — one larger that covers the majority of the space and another smaller one, which cannot be easily replaced by the user.

Once the batteries are removed, the area is covered by a layer of graphite tape, removing which shows copper foil underneath for heat dissipation. The frame for the hinge is made of up metal and connecting both the displays is a metal wire stip that runs through hinges, ensuring durability when the folded.

Internally, the Surface Duo seems pretty good in terms of make and build but has room for improvement when it comes to repairability. JerryRigEverthing has given a thumbs up for the device in his teardown video.

The Microsoft Surface Duo has also proved its durability. It emerged as one of the best foldable smartphones available in the market right now as it could be bent to the back and front without damage to the screen.

Apple has apparently made no structural improvements with its 2020 iPad Pro since the previous generation. The Durability test from JerryRigEverything saw the latest iPad snap and break just as easily as its 2018 counterpart.

The Cupertino based giant has seemingly skipped any improvements to the build quality, with the 2020 iPad Pro having the same structural flaws as the 2018 model. Similar to the previously launched iPad, the latest version also has the exact same weak point, which is near the microphone that is on the side. During the bend test, the 2020 iPad Pro snapped just as easily as the older variant.

In the video, the YouTuber tested the Magic Keyboard as well, which was found to be pretty durable and rigid. Although, it does arrive with a sizeable price tag. OnePlus smartphones have typically passed the durability test set by JerryRigEverything, and so did the OnePlus 8 Pro. In the video, he can be seen scratching the device in different areas like the screen, metal frame, rear camera module and even the cover. Similar to most phones with Gorilla Glass protection, the screen passed the scratch test until level 6 and managed to still retain functionality.

Although, it was impressive that the soft metal cover on the rear held up quite well, being wear resistant. The OnePlus 8 Pro was also subjected to a burn test that had the device survive again, but with a small white spot where it was directly subjected to the high temperatures. Notably, this also marks the first time an OnePlus device has been rated IP68 for water and dust resistance officially.

The final hurdle the premium grade flagship had to pass was the bend test, which it survived once again. For a high price tag starting from 899 US Dollars for the OnePlus 8 Pro, decent build quality and endurance is to be expected.

Xiaomi‘s Black Shark 3 Pro has just undergone a teardown from JerryRigEverything, the popular YouTube tech content creator. The new video shows an interestingly unique internal design and layout of the device and also highlights the big heat pipes that help keep the gaming smartphone cooler.

Peering into the insides, the Xiaomi Black Shark 3 Pro has two thick copper heat pipes that are connected to the metal shields on top of the CPU. To even get to this point, one must remove the bow tie shaped back panel, a design that has never been seen before. Notably, most smartphone OEMs follow relatively similar internal layouts, as they are the most efficient ways to pack in all the hardware.

However, we have to keep in mind that gaming smartphones require a few additional touches for thermal performance, so a unique new design is welcomed as well. Right off the bat, the back panel is noticeably smaller considering a few of the outer designs meld into the battery pack (referring to the angular design on the back). To remove the motherboard or even reach the battery pack, the front display had to be unmounted as well.

Typically, most, if not all internal components can be found or removed from just the rear panel, but this unique layout manages to utilize the smartphone’s angular design to a great degree. Once the motherboards is out, the most notable aspect are the two thick copper heat pipes that wrap around both sides of it. This essentially completely covers the processor and other crucial parts enabling better thermals.

On the other hand, Xiaomi uses twin battery pack systems that surround the motherboard on both sides. This means that Xiaomi charges both the batteries separately to achieve the advertised 65W fast charging rates on the Black Shark 3 Pro. Xiaomi Mi Note 10 is the latest installment in the Chinese tech giant’s popular Mi Note series. This family of smartphones generally targets the mid rage segment and has been generally successful due to attractive prices and specs. Now, the latest Mi Note 10 has undergone a rigorous durability test from renowned YouTuber JerryRigEverything, known for smartphones breakdown and durability tests.

According to the tests, the Mi Note 10’s body, which is protected by Corning’s Gorilla glass, fared well in the scratch test. Up until the 6th level, both the rear panel and display were unharmed, although the Mohs scale at level 6 managed to leave a mark on both sides. The camera was also placed under similar rough testing and was found to be relatively well protected. Meaning, the camera module glass will not be harmed by every day use.

In another test, the screen was also subjected to a heat test by a small fire from a lighter. The Mi Note 10 survived this test as well. Due to its aluminum frame, the scratches from the box cutter were noticeable, but only due to excessive force being applied.

Asus Zenfone 6 is one of the best smartphones in the affordable flagship segment right now. The phone comes with powerful internals and more features than what’s usually found on higher-end flagships. But the flip camera, without a doubt, is its biggest attraction. However, flip cameras aren’t always durable, which is why it’s important to see whether the Zenfone 6 is built to last. That’s exactly what JerryRigEverything checked in his recent video.

JerryRigEverything confirms that the Zenfone 6 has an all-metal design. This is why the phone passed his bend test pretty easily. It didn’t even flex a bit in the bend test which was a very good sign. Also, the Zenfone 6 passed the standard scratch and burn tests comfortably. So, no real issues in these departments.

However, the real test was always going to be the phone’s flip camera. JerryRigEverything tried to twist the camera setup, stop it in between retraction, scratch it, and even banged it on the desk a couple of times. None of these actions seemed to have affected the phone’s camera setup. However, it is worth noting that the motor that drives the flip camera isn’t very powerful, so you can easily stop it mid-way with your hand or any other object. You’ll soon get a notification that the camera setup is obstructed and it goes away once you allow it to move freely.

Just like the OnePlus 7 Pro, Asus Zenfone 6’s flip camera will retract automatically in case of accidental drops. The retraction process is much faster in such a scenario ensuring that the camera is pushed back into its housing before it hits the ground. It is indeed a very useful feature to ensure minimum damage to the camera setup.

Unfortunately, with a flip camera, the Zenfone 6 isn’t waterproof. So, make sure to keep the phone away from water at all costs.

Overall, it looks like Asus has made a solid flagship once again. So, cast away your worries as the Zenfone 6 is built to last.

We have seen him tear apart a lot of phones in 2018 and now its time to check out the most durable smartphones of the year. He just released his Smartphone Durability Awards 2018 edition and we’ve got no major surprises here. According to him, the most durable smartphone of 2018 was a special phone, the Kyocera Duraforce Pro 2. Well, it’s not really a surprise, given that the phone was meant to be a rugged device. If you are wondering which is the best budget durable smartphone, that award goes to the Nokia 7 Plus. In general, Nokia phones have fared very well in his tests and it’s no surprise that the same phone gets another award, best repairable phone of 2018.

Coming to the worst performers, the iPhone XS Max was the least repairable phone of 2018. In fact, he added that if you broke the glass on the back of the phone, it would cost you $599 (~ one 8GB OP6T) to get it fixed! Coming to the least durable phone, that award went to Mate 20 Pro and the P20 Pro models since they both were the only ones to crack in his bend test.

When a new smartphone is launched, there are several benchmark tests that are used to test the performance of the smartphone. When it comes to testing the durability or rather build quality, there is only one name which pops up and that is Zacks Jerry who runs the YouTube channel JerryRigEverything. Presently, the YouTuber has uploaded a video of the Huawei P20 Pro durability test.

Zacks Jerry’s durability tests usually includes a scratch test, bend test and burn tests. During the scratch test, the P20 Pro’s screen scratches only with a level 6 Mohs pick, and at level 7 there’s a deeper groove. Huawei fits the P20 Pro with a plastic screen protector from the factory, but it wasn’t advertised as having a Gorilla Glass on top of the display panel. The screen protector is just the generic tempered glass. The glass seems not to be strong enough as the P20 Pro’s front glass panel got cracked during the bend test. But then, the device isn’t anticipated to go through such extreme traumas during normal usage. Besides, the crack seems to have started from the faulty line created during the scratch test and it is just the glass that got affected and not the AMOLED panel underneath.

The Nokia 3310 (2017) shares some visual similarities to the original version but what most people want to know is if it is equally durable. YouTuber JerryRigEverything who is famous for putting phones through durability tests got his hands on a unit and the outcome is pretty interesting.

The Nokia 3310 (2017) has a 2.4” 240 x 320 display, 16MB of built-in storage and a microSD card slot. There is a 2MP rear camera with LED flash, Bluetooth 3.0 and a 1200mAh battery that can last up to 31 days on standby. It comes with the famous Snake game and you can install more from the Opera app store. The Nokia 3310 (2017) is available in select markets for now for about €50.

The BlackBerry KEYOne is now available for purchase in different markets. The TCL made phone has gotten mixed reviews but most people are pleased with the physical keyboard. However, there seems to be an issue with the build quality of the phone.

YouTuber, JerryRigEverything found out in his durability test that the screen of the KEYOne comes off easily. Turns out that the only thing holding the screen in place is the cable from the motherboard. No adhesive, no glue, no sticky tape.

A search on Google later revealed complaints from different owners. Small drops to the floor and the screen pops off. One user even says he woke to see his screen and come off on its own.

There is a chance that the issue is limited to a certain batch that didn’t get glued while passing through the production line. Sadly, there is no way to find out if your phone is affected unless your screen falls off when it drops.

JerryRigEverything advises that you invest in a case with a lip that wraps around the screen.

Less than a year after the launch of the Moto G4 and its siblings, Lenovo decided it was time for an upgrade, and that’s how the Moto G5 and Moto G5 Plus were born. Announced at MWC 2017, the Moto G5 is the smaller of the two.

The Moto G5 can be said to be a mixed bag of upgrades and downgrades. First, the overall design now looks like that of the Moto Z released last year. The rear camera has changed from the pill-shape design to a circular one. The back plate is made of metal and the battery is now removable. The display has been cut down to 5.0-inches but the resolution remains the same at 1920 × 1080.

Unlike, the G4  from last year the G5 now has a fingerprint scanner. The reduction in screen size resonates in the battery capacity too as it is now 2800mAh instead of 3000mAh.

But what does all these changes mean for the durability of the Moto G5? Surprisingly, it holds it’s own when YouTuber JerryRigEveryting put it through his cringe-worth durability test. It even outperforms the HTC U Ultra Which costs more than 4x its price.

Even with its low price, this is a strong device. If  you want a device that is not expensive, runs nearly stock android and doesn’t sacrifice quality for price, the Moto G5 is the phone to go for.

When you purchase a phone, you expect it to be able to survive the occasional falls and scratches. But how do you know a phone is durable? You can’t go buying a phone just for the sake of knowing how durable it is unless you are JerryRigEverything.

Popular Youtuber, JerryRigEverything whose real name is Zack puts the Honor 6X through a durability test. The results are astonishing.

First let’s run through the specs of the device. The Honor 6X is a mid-range dual camera phone with a 5.5-inch 1080p display. It has 4GB/3GB of RAM and 64GB/32GB of built-in storage. There is a 12MP and 2MP camera combo on the rear for depth of field images and an 8MP shooter in front. Huawei has equipped it with a fingerprint scanner on the rear and a 3340mAh battery. The Honor 6X comes with Android 6.0 out of the box but will be upgraded to Android Nougat.

Back to the test. First on the list is the scratch test. If you noticed, I didn’t mention any form of protection for the display above. No Gorilla Glass nor Dragontrail Glass. The result shows that you will be wise to invest in a tempered glass as the display starts scratching from level 4. Do make sure that the screen protector covers the front camera too.

The scratch test also includes the glass covering the rear cameras which fares well, and the fingerprint scanner which fails to work anymore.

Next is the bend test. The Honor 6X uses a combination of  metal and plastic for the rear. The plastic is to allow for network signals and absorb shocks and the metal to……in this case serve as decoration. Apart from the metal scratching easily, it also does nothing to protect the phone during the bend test. The reason according to JerryRigEverything is because the metal plate is not screwed to the phone at all. During the bend test, the LCD actually shattered way before the front glass did. So if you accidentally sit on the Honor 6X, it is very possible to have a damaged LCD and a perfectly alright front glass.

Jerry’s advice after the test is to invest in a screen protector and a case to protect your device or purchase the Honor 8. You can watch the full video below but expect to cringe during some scenes.

The Xiaomi Mi Mix has been on sale for about two weeks now and those who were able to snag a unit during the extremely short flash sales have started receiving their phones.

The Xiaomi Mix is a fragile phone and this is due to its lack of bezels on three sides and its ceramic body. So you have to be very careful if you own one as chances of it surviving a drop is very slim. So at what height does the Mi Mix crack? YouTuber, JerryRigEverything has decided to find out for us in his drop test.

First he mentions that in his durability test of the phone, the Mi Mix’ ceramic body is pretty strong, scoring almost 8 on the scale of hardness. The first drop test is from a height of 6 inches and the Mix survives without a scratch. The second drop test cranks it up to 1 foot and it still doesn’t shatter even though the fall causes it to bounce off the concrete and flip over.

The straw height that breaks the Mix’s back is 2 feet and to be honest it may have survived the fall if it had landed face flat and not on the top right corner. The fall chips out the ceramic and leaves two cracks that run  across the whole length of the display.

So the advice is to make sure you do not drop your Mi Mix or invest in a bumper case that can absorb shocks most especially at the corners. Below is the full video of the drop test

The first test the Mix was subjected to was the scratch test and that is done with the help of picks that helps determine the degree of resistance the device can endure when it is scratched. The test result places the Xiaomi Mix at the same level with most modern flagships. The analyst also subjected the camera lens, the display to different test involving the use of heat as well as physically bending the phone to see the degree of strain it can withstand.
