Sony looks like it’s preparing its next big step in console graphics, and this time the focus is on AI. PlayStation’s lead architect has confirmed that machine learning-based frame generation feature is on the roadmap. It aims to improve the frame rate without needing a raw jump in hardware power.

The update comes from Mark Cerny, who spoke about Sony’s plans in a recent interview highlighted by Digital Foundry. According to him, Sony has been working closely with AMD under a joint initiative called Project Amethyst. The idea is to co-develop graphics and machine learning tech specifically tuned for PlayStation hardware.

A big part of that effort revolves around AMD’s upcoming FSR Redstone suite. This includes not just upscaling, but also frame generation and something called ray reconstruction. Cerny pointed out that Sony’s PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) already shares core elements with the same tech stack, at least on the upscaling side. So this isn’t a completely separate path. It’s more like an extension of what’s already there.

The key takeaway is that improved AI-driven frame generation is coming, though not anytime soon. Cerny made it clear that nothing new on this front is expected for the rest of 2026. Still, the groundwork seems to be well underway, and both Sony and AMD appear fairly confident about where things are headed.

If this sounds familiar, it’s because we’ve already seen similar tech on PCs, and even on some smartphones. NVIDIA’s DLSS and AMD’s own solutions use AI to generate extra frames between rendered ones, making games look smoother even at lower base frame rates. Bringing that to consoles could help bridge the gap between visual fidelity and performance, especially as games continue to get more demanding.

As for when it actually shows up, there’s no official timeline yet. That said, it’s hard not to connect this with the next generation of PlayStation hardware. Sony’s direction here is pretty clear: lean more into AI to get the most out of its hardware.

Sony just made a new PlayStation announcement that seemingly came out of nowhere. It unveiled the new Pulse Elevate Wireless Speakers as PlayStation branded speakers back in October. Now, the brand has launched a PlayStation Gaming Monitor, marking a new first for Sony.

Sony Quietly Introduces Its First PlayStation Gaming Monitor

The latest hardware announcement from Sony is a new gaming monitor for PlayStation. This new model arrives with a 27-inch IPS LCD panel that has a QHD resolution (1440p) and up to 240Hz refresh rate. Although, the high refresh rate is only available for PC and Mac with VRR support. Meanwhile, the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro only get a 120Hz refresh rate when paired with the monitor.

This makes sense considering how the popular gaming consoles barely hit the triple digit frame rate in most titles. Finer details regarding the display itself, like support for HDR content, are still unclear. However, Sony has confirmed that the PlayStation branded gaming monitor features two HDMI 2.1 ports, one DP 1.4 port, two USB Type A ports, and a single USB Type-C port for PlayStation Link devices. This basically allows the monitor to link with other PS Link enabled products like the brand’s speakers, headphones, and TWS earbuds.

Other notable features include built-in stereo speakers, a 3.5mm audio output, VESA mount compatibility, and the DualSense Charging Hook. This is basically an integrated charging dock that is also retractable. Sony plans to sell this separately from the new gaming monitor, which is set to release in just the US and Japan (for now). Unfortunately, pricing details are still at large but the PlayStation monitor will roll out sometime next year.

Sony has officially named its new fight stick controller, previously known as Project Defiant. The device is now called the FlexStrike and will be on display at Evo 2025 in Las Vegas from August 1 to 3. It is scheduled to launch in 2026. Pricing has not been announced yet.

The FlexStrike is Sony’s first in-house arcade controller. It works with both PlayStation 5 and PC. It supports wired USB-C connections and wireless play using the PlayStation Link adapter. The wireless setup is built to reduce input lag and also supports audio devices like the Pulse Elite headset and Pulse Explore earbuds at the same time.

Players can connect two FlexStrike controllers to a single adapter for local matches. A DualSense controller can stay connected at the same time for menu navigation. A quick press of the PS button can wake the PS5 when the FlexStrike is synced.

The controller uses a digital joystick, eight mechanical buttons similar to the DualSense, and a touchpad. It also includes a lever switch to change directional inputs and a lock button to prevent unwanted presses during a match.

The FlexStrike has a non-slip base and comes with swappable restrictor gates. It includes circular, square, and octagonal gate options, which can be stored in compartments under the base along with the USB adapter. The base covering can be removed to access these parts. The design includes angled surfaces for a more comfortable grip during long play sessions.

A sling carry case is included, and the controller runs on a built-in rechargeable battery. The FlexStrike will be playable at the Arc System Works booth and the Fight Stick Museum at Evo 2025.

Sony debuted the PlayStation Portable (PSP) on 12th December 2004 in Japan. So as we approach the 20th anniversary of the PSP, let’s reflect on how this console shaped the handheld gaming market. It was Sony’s bold entry into handheld gaming, so let’s dive into its history, reception, and legacy.

Sony PSP: What made it special?

At the time of its launch, the Sony PSP arrived with impressive performance despite its form factor. Sony wasn’t the first in the handheld segment, but it brought AAA titles to gamers on the go. Since Sony is known for its exclusives, the Portable has an impressive lineup of games. It has a bar form factor with a 4.3-inch LCD screen that offers 480 x 272 resolution. The PSP offered two should buttons, the four iconic PlayStation face buttons, a directional pad, and several other buttons. This console had a wireless LAN switch, and a USB mini-B port on the top.

Under the hood, the PSP used two CPUs (as a main CPU and Media Engine). These processors were paired with 32MB of RAM (64MB in later models). An 1,800mAh battery pack powers the Sony PSP, which offers anywhere between 3 to 6 hours of gameplay. A console is only as great as the games it offers and the PSP’s lineup did not disappoint. Popular franchises like God of War, Final Fantasy, and Gran Turismo made their way to the device, bringing a console-like experience on the go.

Reception

By the end of its production in 2014, Sony had sold over 80 million units worldwide. This made the PSP a massive success and the only real competitor to Nintendo’s handheld monopoly. During its initial release, the Portable was praised for its stunning display, high quality graphics, and ability to handle multimedia tasks. It was considered a premium device that combined gaming and entertainment. While the PSP had stiff competition from Nintendo’s DS, it managed to carve out a loyal fan base.

Legacy

After the success of the PSP and 10 years of production, Sony decided to bring a successor called the PS Vita (PlayStation Vita). This model came with various upgrades in terms of design and performance, bringing modern features like remote play and digital storefronts as well. Users could now store music, photos, and more. Unfortunately, the more expensive PS Vita was considered a commercial failure for a number of reasons, which we shall get into at a later date.

Sony has yet to release another true handheld gaming console since the Vita. However, rumors have hinted at a planned PlayStation handheld, which can run games natively. Sony may make a surprise announcement after the PSP’s 20th anniversary or later on. But the PSP’s legacy will likely continue on as handheld consoles are becoming popular once again.

Sony Temporarily Halts PS VR2 Production

Although virtual reality has been in the spotlight lately with the Apple Vision Pro, it’s not a new technology for Sony. The company released its first headset as a PS4 accessory back in 2016. While sales weren’t groundbreaking, it showed promise, prompting PlayStation to continue development. This culminated in the February release of the PS VR2, priced at $549.99.

The company confirmed in a blogpost that the Ghost of Tsushima will be ported to PC by Nixxes, which is a studio owned by Sony. This announcement also revealed that the Director’s Cut of the game will be releasing for PCs on 16th May 2024. For those unaware, Ghost of Tsushima is a action-adventure experience that has players take the role of Jin Sakai, who is a samurai that is fighting to protect the Tsushima island during the first Mongol invasion of Japan.

This title was originally released back in 2020 and was a PlayStation exclusive till today. The announcement from Sony adds that the PC port will bring not just the campaign, but also the Iki Island expansion. In other words, the DLC that offers a new location, characters, and enemies is also making its way to PCs this summer. The multiplayer Legend mode is also in the works, and the Kurosawa Mode for a black and white film grain effect inspired by legendary filmmaker Akira Kurosawa will also be bundled at launch.

As of right now, Ghost of Tsushima is already up for pre-orders on Epic Game Store and Steam Store. It has a price tag of 3,999 INR (roughly 48 US Dollars). Early buyers will also get their hands on a bunch of early in-game items as well. This includes New Game+ Horse travel companion, Traveler’s Attire, and Broken Armor dyes from Baku’s shop. Gamers can also look forward to graphics settings, unlocked frame rates, and native mouse and keyboard support.

The information comes from a user who claims to have obtained these details from reliable sources. Here are the key highlights of the leak:

• Viola is fabbed on TSMC N4P.
• GFX1115
• Viola’s CPU is maintaining the zen2 architecture found in the existing PS5 for compatibility, but the frequency will once again be dynamic with a peak of 4.4GHz. 64 KB of L1 cache per core, 512 KB of L2 cache per core, and 8 MB of L3 shared (4 MB per CCX).
• Viola’s die is 30WGPs when fully enabled, but it will only have 28WGPs (56 CUs) enabled for the silicon in retail PS5 Pro units.
• Trinity is the culmination of three key technologies. Fast storage (hardware accelerated compression and decompression, already an existing key PS5 technology), accelerated ray tracing, and upscaling.
• Architecture is RDNA3, but it’s taking ray tracing improvements from RDNA4. BVH traversal will be handled by dedicated RT hardware rather than fully relying on the shaders. It will also include thread reordering to reduce data and execution divergence, something akin to Ada Lovelace SER and Intel Arc’s TSU.
• 3584 shaders, 224 TMUs, and 96 ROPs.
• 16GB of 18 gbps GDDR6. 256-bit memory bus with 576 GB/s memory bandwidth.
• The GPU frequency target is 2.0 GHz. This lands the dual-issue TFLOPs in the range of 28.67 TFLOPs peak (224 (TMUs) * 2 (operations, dual issue) * 2 (core clock)). 14.33 TFLOPs if we ignore the dual-issue factor.
• 50-60% rasterization uplift over Oberon and Oberon Plus, over twice the raw RT performance.
• XDNA2 NPU will be featured for the purpose of accelerating Sony’s bespoke temporal machine learning upscaling technique. This will be one of the core focuses of the PS5 Pro, like we saw with checkboard rendering for the PS4 Pro. Temporally stable upscaled 4K output at higher than 30 FPS is the goal.

Sony recently announced the new PlayStation China Hero Project that is aimed at bolstering the video game development industry in the region. The project is helping in developing multiple titles already. So here’s everything you need to know.

Sony PlayStation China Hero Project

In a new trailer, the company showcased the China Hero Project and also unveiled the nine upcoming games that are being developed. These games are from local video game developers who are using the Unreal Engine, a popular game engine. As of right now, eight of these titles are still under development. With the new initiative, Sony is looking to aid local game developers in China by allowing them to leverage Sony’s global industry resources.

The goal of the project is to allow Chinese devs to create quality games for the gaming audience. Looking at the list of upcoming games, these new titles appear to encompass various different genres. This includes third person hack and slash, horror shooters, action RPGs, 3D side scrolling games, and much more. As of right now, it is still unclear when these titles will be released in the market. One of these titles include “The God Slayer” which is an RPG title that has players explore a fantasy open world and defeat powerful foes to grow stronger.

Some of the other titles also bear some striking resemblance to popular existing games. One appears to be a destiny-like third person looter shooter, while another takes clear inspiration from Soulsborne games from the beloved FromSoftware studio. Most of these games are also derived from China’s rich history and mythology, so its interesting to see the different settings being explored in gaming. Unfortunately, it is unclear whether these games are slated for a global release or if they will remain exclusive to the Chinese region. It’s been a harrowing time for Sony PlayStation owners. Several users reported earlier today that their PlayStation Networks (PSN) accounts have been suspended. What’s more troublesome is that the accounts have been banned without any proper reasoning. Additionally, Sony hasn’t officially acknowledged the matter. It’s unclear how widespread the problem is but it has resulted in confusion and frustration among the affected users. As of writing this post, some users are reporting that their accounts are working again. 

Sony suspends PSN accounts of users out of the blue

Multiple users on Reddit, X, ResetEra forum, and even The Verge reported that PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 owners received suspension alerts for their PSN account. The messages popped up without any advanced notice or clarification resulting in to potential security concerns or glitches in Sony’s network. “This account is permanently suspended from PlayStation Network due to violations of the PlayStation Network Terms of Service and User Agreement,” one message read. 

The suspension of accounts is a grave issue for PS5 Digital Edition owners as the console relies solely on PSN network. Additionally, creating a new account does not transfer the purchased content from old account which means users lose access to it. 

Affected users who contacted PlayStation customer service revealed that Sony didn’t clarify the reason for suspending their account. The company asked users to create a new PSN account. The Japanese brand has not issued an official statement on the matter. There are no posts on the PlayStation support page under ‘important notices’. 

We hope that innocent affected users get their account suspension reversed which seems very likely.

Xbox Game Pass and Exclusive Titles to Embrace Nintendo and PlayStation

This information comes directly from Tim Stuart, the head of Xbox’s finance department, who mentioned during an event this week, “Our mission is to make Game Pass playable on any screen where you can play games. This plan certainly includes Nintendo Switch and PlayStation as well.” While Phil Spencer, the head of Xbox, has hinted at similar intentions before, this is the first time an executive openly mentioned PlayStation by name.

However, Microsoft’s enthusiasm alone isn’t sufficient; cooperation from Sony and Nintendo is crucial, and that may prove challenging. Two main reasons contribute to this challenge. First, games from the Xbox Game Pass library are already available in services like PlayStation Plus and the digital stores of those platforms. This issue could potentially be resolved by allowing only Microsoft games to be included, ensuring console manufacturers don’t lose commissions.

The more significant challenge, though, is the reluctance of Sony and Nintendo to contribute to Microsoft’s profits. Even though Xbox may not approach competition as aggressively as before, its Asian competitors may not share the same sentiment. Consequently, they may hesitate to allow the Game Pass service, fearing it could bring millions of new subscribers and billions of dollars to their rivals.

It’s important to note that these discussions are speculative at this point. Only time will tell whether we will witness such a scenario unfolding in the future.

However, there’s a revived interest in Daredevil: The Man Without Fear, a game that was initially unveiled in 2004 but never saw the light of day.

So, why didn’t Daredevil: The Man Without Fear get released?

Recently, playable demos and videos of the canceled 2004 Daredevil project have surfaced on social media. An engineer who worked at the developer 5000ft shared the demo almost two decades ago. This game, intended for PC, PS2, and Xbox platforms, was a third-person beat ’em up style, but it faced challenges. The demo notes reveal that Marvel decided to cancel the game, feeling it had strayed from the original concept presented by Sony.

Earlier reports hinted that the cancellation was due to employee negligence. Allegedly, some team members didn’t dedicate enough attention to the game and were not consistently involved in the project. While the leaked version available online is incomplete, it offers a glimpse into Daredevil: The Man Without Fear, a game developed two decades ago.

Some users speculate that this leak wasn’t accidental. There are allegations that Insomniac Games might be working on a Daredevil DLC for Spider-Man 2. Notably, there have been encrypted shares related to Matt Murdock (Daredevil character) in the past.

Sony recently announced a new slimmer version of the PlayStation 5, which will come with a beefed-up 1TB SSD. However, gamers shouldn’t expect all of the capacity to be usable for games and apps. According to the recent reports, the new PS5 slim may only have about 808GB of actual usable storage for content and games. Here are the details…

New 1TB PS5 slim may have 808GB of usable storage

The recently introduced PS5 Slim stands out not only for being smaller and lighter but also for its upgraded storage space. As you may know, the original PlayStation 5 has 825 GB of SSD storage. Now, the Slim version reverts to the industry standard of 1TB. However, don’t be misled by the numbers; some storage is required for the operating system and built-in applications. This is why, even though the existing PS5 has 825 GB on paper, only 667 GB of it is usable. This will, of course, also apply to the PS5 Slim.

The recent leaks indicate that the new consoles will have a usable memory of 808 GB. This suggests that the new PS5 slim might offer an additional 141 GB of storage compared to the current PS5 models. Although it’s a letdown that gamers won’t receive the full 1TB of storage, an extra 141GB is certainly a beneficial enhancement, especially considering we’re paying the same price for the version with a disc drive. This will provide gamers with more room to store their beloved games and other content.

It’s also important to note that the new PS5 slim will still support SSD storage expansion. This means that gamers can add their own NVMe SSD to the console if they need more storage space. The new PS5 slim is expected to be released in late 2023. It will be available in two versions: one with an Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc drive and one without.

For those unaware, the Access Controller is a PlayStation 5 controller kit designed to make gaming more accessible. Its keys are highly customizable to meet the player’s diverse needs, helping players with disabilities play games more comfortably and longer.

How will Access Controller work?

The Access Controller will provide users with a customizable analog stick (usually used to steer your character in the game), which can be adjusted using a slider for the player’s comfort. After making the adjustments, you can also hold the analog’s position by pressing the lock button. Secondly, it comes with holes in the base of the controller to attach fasteners, making it safe from accidentally dropping the device. Lastly, you can personalize the whole controller by removing button caps and substituting them, making it easier for players to get used to the device quickly. The company is continuously taking feedback from various organizations and communities to make the controller more user-friendly. This means we might also see more Access controllers in the future.

Phil Spencer, the Microsoft Gaming and Xbox head shared on Twitter that “We are pleased to announce that Microsoft and @PlayStation have signed a binding agreement to keep Call of Duty on PlayStation following the acquisition of Activision Blizzard. We look forward to a future where players globally have more choice to play their favorite games.” The announcement comes amongst fears of anti-competitive practices from Microsoft that were voiced by Sony.

The Japanese tech giant claimed that the American company could pull out the Call of Duty franchise from the PlayStation. However, it appears that this will not be the case. In simpler terms, the gaming industry’s massive shooter series will remain on platforms that it has already existed on, despite Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard. So you can play it on your preferred console, be it Xbox or PlayStation.

The studio behind the FF16 have released a new demo on the PlayStation store, which consists of two segments from the full game. This first segment alone offers 2 hours of gameplay, which is set during a playable prologue of the game. Furthermore, the save data from this segment can even be carries forward to the full game when the game drops later this month. On the other hand, the second part of the demo is another 2 hour long segment.

Although, this part of the upcoming Final Fantasy XVI is more action focused and is based around a mission that shows Clive’s infiltration of a fort. But unlike the prologue, this section of the game’s save data will not be transferred to the final game. This makes sense considering the fact that this part takes place later in the story unlike the prologue. The second segment of the demo is also primarily focused on showcasing the combat of the game and was action packed.

According to Henderson, the game will be exclusive to the PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC platforms. Despite being released in 2020, the latest-generation consoles have not yet achieved the same player numbers as their previous counterparts.

Rockstar is reportedly waiting for these new consoles to attract a larger audience before releasing GTA 6, ensuring a sizable player base upon launch.

In a recent response to the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), Sony expressed its ongoing opposition to Microsoft’s planned acquisition of Activision Blizzard. Sony voiced concerns that Microsoft’s takeover could potentially impact the performance and quality of Call of Duty on PlayStation, resulting in fans switching to Xbox. The fear is that Microsoft could intentionally or unintentionally release a version of the game on PlayStation where bugs and errors emerge only on the game’s final level or after later updates, leading to a loss of confidence in PlayStation as a go-to venue to play Call of Duty.

Sony stated that there would be no viable way for it or the CMA to assess how Microsoft chooses to allocate its resources and the quality/quantity of engineers it devotes to the PlayStation version of Call of Duty to ensure that Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) would be treated fairly and equally. However, degrading the quality of Call of Duty on PlayStation would not be the wisest course of action, as it would likely lead to a bigger backlash against Microsoft and Activision than Sony.

Microsoft, on the other hand, noted in its response to the CMA that it has offered to provide Sony with parity on release date, content, features, upgrades, quality, and playability with the Xbox platform. The catch is that Sony must accept Microsoft’s proposed 10-year agreement to keep Call of Duty on PlayStation, and Microsoft would be willing to agree to a third-party assessor to oversee the platform uniformity for the sake of the game.

In addition, Sony’s letter also reiterated its concern that Microsoft would make Call of Duty a Game Pass exclusive, thus away from PlayStation. However, Microsoft refuted this claim, stating that it made zero business sense to take Call of Duty off of PlayStation.

The CMA is set to make a final ruling on the deal by April 26th. Reports suggest that the European Union is set to give the merger the green light following news that Microsoft will bring Call of Duty and other games to Nintendo and GeForce Now platforms.

Meaning that the Android version may still have some bugs and limitations compared to the versions for other platforms. Therefore, it’s important to check out the release notes before getting started.

To use Vita3K on an Android device, you’ll need a device that’s newer and more powerful than an actual PS Vita. The emulator requires a 64-bit ARM processor running Android 7 or later with support for Vulkan 1.0 graphics. All devices running Android 7 or later should meet these requirements. While the PS Vita was discontinued by Sony a few years ago, used units can still be found for around $130 and up on eBay. Using an emulator to play Vita games on your phone may be a more practical option, even though the emulator is still in its experimental stages.

In order to play games, you’ll need to obtain PS Vita games. If you don’t want to resort to piracy, the Vita3K team suggests using open-source tools for dumping games from cartridges you already own, or playing homebrew games. Vita3K Android is a new and exciting development for fans of PS Vita games, offering a way to play some of their favorite games on their Android devices. However, it is still in its experimental stage, so users should be aware of the limitations and bugs that may come with using the emulator.
