Microsoft’s long-term ambition to make Windows on ARM a viable mainstream platform got a serious push when Qualcomm introduced the Snapdragon X Elite. 

Designed from the ground up for performance laptops, it brought 12 Oryon CPU cores, competitive integrated graphics, and a range of connectivity and AI features that finally gave ARM-based Windows devices a fighting chance. 

Now we are looking at what its successor will bring in terms of upgrades, and we may finally have some first details. 

Snapdragon X2 Elite in testing with 18 cores?

According to tipster Roland Quandt, the unannounced SoC, tagged with the part number SC8480XP, is undergoing internal testing with up to 64GB of RAM. This 64GB configuration is likely to be reserved for a top-tier version of the chip and reportedly has 18 CPU cores, compared to the current X Elite’s 12. 

Moreover, previous leaks say that the silicon will have a SiP (System-in-Package) design that bakes RAM and storage directly onto the processor package. This will offer faster data access and better thermal performance, but might not offer much in terms of modularity.

Apart from the X2 Elite, we are also expecting the Snapdragon X2 Plus chip to succeed the X Plus. Qualcomm is set to host this year’s Snapdragon Summit on September 23 in Hawaii.

It will announce the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 at the event. But we are also expecting some details about the upcoming PC chips. Whether or not Qualcomm will announce X2 Elite or X2 Plus remains unclear.

Acer has just announced a bunch of new PCs with cutting edge hardware. The Acer Predator Orion 3000 is a desktop PC, while the Predator Helios Neo 14 AI and Predator Triton 15 AI are powerful gaming laptops. But alongside these models, the company has also unveiled Aspire 16 AI laptops that offer impressively long battery life across latest gen Intel, AMD, and Snapdragon platforms. So let’s check it out.

Acer Aspire 16 AI launch: What makes it special?

Acer has built the Aspire 16 AI with new and efficient processors that promise great battery life while not compromising on performance. The Intel variant arrived with up to a Core Ultra 7 258V, which is paired with Intel Arc graphics. Acer promises up to 26 hours of battery life on this model. Meanwhile, the AMD option features either the Ryzen AI 7 350 or Ryzen AI 5 340 processors. This is coupled with Radeon 860M and Radeon 840M, respectively.

Lastly, there is the ARM based Snapdragon version which includes the Snapdragon X platform. The most notable aspect of this model is its impressively long battery life of 27 hours. The new Aspire 16 AI sports a tall 16-inch OLED WUXGA+ display with a 120Hz refresh rate and 500 nits of peak brightness. Although, the Qualcomm option skips the OLED display for an LCD WUXGA panel that can be opted with 100 percent sRGB or 45 percent NTSC color gamut.

All Aspire 16 AI laptop can be paired with up to 32GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 1TB of PCIe Gen4 SSD storage. These also support microSD expansion. A sizeable 65Wh battery pack powers this model. Connectivity options include USB 3.2 Type-A, USB-C, HDMI 2.1, a MicroSD slot, and WiFi 6E/7. Acer Aspire 16 AI runs on Windows 11 OS, with the AMD options featuring Microsoft’s Pluton security chip and facial recognition. The Snapdragon variant gets the basic Windows Hello.

Other notable AI powered features include PurifiedVoice, LiveArt, and Copilot+ Hotkey. Acer is set to launch the Aspire 16 AI in the Snapdragon option in July for a starting price tag of 749 Euros. On the other hand, the AMD and Intel variants will go on sale in August. Team Red options will start from 999 Euros, while the base model of Team Blue versions costs 1,049 Euros.

I was present at a recent event at the Croma retail store in Juhu, Mumbai, where Senior Vice President and General Manager of Compute and Gaming, Kedar Kondap, announced Qualcomm’s first Snapdragon Experience Zone in India. After the event, I had the chance to talk to about the existing Snapdragon X lineup, which includes three options: Snapdragon X, X Plus, and X Elite.

The discussion covered how the Snapdragon X series caters to different user needs, with AI integration via the NPU ensuring minimal battery drain even with on-device LLMs. Kedar emphasized clear product naming, India’s rapid AI adoption, and future possibilities, including ARM-powered desktops and more affordable Snapdragon-powered PCs as adoption increases. The conversation also touched on GPU performance, with Qualcomm prioritizing AI and battery life over high-end gaming graphics.

To ensure you get meaningful insights from the interview, we have divided the conversation with Mr. Kedar into five clear sections.

Battery Life is a Key Priority For Laptops

Battery life remains an important factor for today’s professionals. According to Kedar, Snapdragon understands this need, further explaining that “market research consistently shows that battery life is a top priority for PC buyers.” This consumer insight has shaped the fundamental design approach of their X Series processors.

For example, I have reviewed the VivoBook S15 Co-pilot PC powered by Snapdragon X Elite, which delivers impressive stamina, “achieving 9 to 10 hours of usage” during typical workdays. This represents a significant advancement compared to many traditional x86 laptops that require more frequent charging during intensive tasks.

Snapdragon ensures that even users who are not yet interested in on-device AI can still benefit from superior power efficiency. Kedar highlights, “Even if they’re not immediately convinced about generative AI, they’ll still benefit from the superior battery performance.”

Snapdragon Chips Integrate AI Efficiently

One of the major concerns with on-device AI processing is its potential impact on power consumption. However, Snapdragon addresses this by integrating an NPU (Neural Processing Unit) across its entire lineup. For those who don’t know, NPU is dedicated to handling AI workloads efficiently, reducing the burden on the CPU and GPU. This enhances performance and power efficiency, enabling smoother AI-driven tasks.

Kedar explains how this design choice enhances efficiency: “Leveraging our mobile heritage, we’ve been able to offload many applications to the NPU, which actually improves efficiency and reduces the impact on battery life when using on-device LLMs.”

Elite Series comes in Performance Tiers with Clear Positioning

To ensure clarity for consumers, the Snapdragon X series has a straightforward product lineup:

• Snapdragon X Elite – The highest performance tier
• Snapdragon X+ – Mid-tier, offering a balance of power and efficiency
• Snapdragon X – The entry-level option

Kedar confirms, “We want consumers to easily understand the tiers. X Elite represents the best performance, followed by X+ and then X.”

Despite offering high-end AI capabilities, Snapdragon has ensured price accessibility. Kedar states, “With prices starting around $600 for the Snapdragon X, we ensure consumers can access high-performing laptops with excellent battery life and AI capabilities across the entire product stack.”

Snapdragon X Series’ GPU Performance is Good for Everyday Tasks

While Snapdragon GPUs are not designed for high-end gaming, they offer strong performance for everyday applications, including casual gaming and AI-driven tasks.

Kedar emphasizes, “Our GPUs are excellent for casual gaming, standard applications, and even AI generation.” However, he acknowledges that Snapdragon is not targeting professional gaming:“For high-end professional gaming, a dedicated gaming GPU would be more suitable.”

This makes Snapdragon-powered PCs ideal for professionals, students, and general users who prioritize battery life and AI capabilities over extreme graphics performance.“

Future Outlook and Market Expansion of X Series Chips

Snapdragon is making significant strides in expanding its X Series lineup, with growing adoption across manufacturers. Kedar highlights, “We’ve already announced over 70 or 80 devices, either launched or in development, featuring Snapdragon processors.”

As more manufacturers integrate Snapdragon X chips, prices are expected to become more competitive, making ARM-powered PCs a mainstream choice.

Snapdragon-powered laptops are gradually becoming more affordable, with Snapdragon X-powered models like the Acer Swift Go A14 and Asus VivoBook 16 priced at Rs 50,000 and Rs 65,900, respectively.

Additionally, Snapdragon is expanding beyond just laptops, with mini desktops and small form factor devices already announced at CES 2024. This signals potential entry into the desktop market in the near future.

Conclusion

Snapdragon X drops on February 24

To recall, the chipmaking giant expanded its Snapdragon X lineup with the new Snapdragon X. This is the base model in the series, being an entry level SoC alongside its already popular Snapdragon X Plus and Snapdragon X Elite processors. With this chipset, Qualcomm aimed on better penetrating a wider range of laptops in the market. The Snapdragon X was made to target both the budget friendly and mid range options.

In one of its official teaser posters, the brand announced that the new Snapdragon X platform for AI PCs will be launching in the Indian market on 24th February 2025. This processor was first announced for Windows PCs for laptops from brands like Acer, ASUS, HP, Dell, and Lenovo which cost under $600. But unfortunately, it is still unclear which laptop model will feature this new budget AI chip in India.

Based on the earlier release, the Snapdragon X features eight CPU cores clocked at up to 3.0GHz. It has a total memory cache of 30MB and is based on the ARM architecture, just like its elder siblings. The Snapdragon X features an Adreno GPU that can deliver up to 1.7 TFLOPS, which is sufficient for light gaming, older titles, and other common tasks. However, one of its main advantages is the dedicated NPU that outputs 45 TOPS of AI performance, making it compatible with Copilot+ features. So this new chip could offer a breath of fresh air in the budget laptop segment in the Indian market.

ASUS introduced the Zenbook A14 (UX3407QA-PS76) at the CES 2025 tech show, which was held at the start of the month. As part of the Qualcomm Snapdragon X Series, it offers a balance of performance, long battery life, and seamless connectivity, making it a good choice for customers who are looking for something similar to a Macbook Air that runs Windows. The laptop is now available to buy in the US.

ASUS Zenbook A14 features

The Zenbook A14 weighs 2.18 lbs (998 grams), making it one of the lightest 14-inch laptops available. This is due to its Ceraluminum chassis, which is 30% lighter and three times stronger than standard aluminum. The laptop has an Iceland Gray finish and measures 12.23 inches in width, and 8.42 inches in depth, with a thickness of 0.53 to 0.63 inches.

Powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon X1 processor, the Zenbook A14 is designed for efficiency. Its 70Wh battery supports up to 32 hours of video playback on a single charge. A dual-fan cooling system helps maintain performance while keeping noise levels low.

The Qualcomm Hexagon NPU enables AI-driven tasks with up to 45 TOPS (trillion operations per second). It is also equipped with the Snapdragon Seamless technology that allows for smooth file transfers, screen mirroring, and easy switching between Snapdragon-powered devices.

The Zenbook A14 includes Adaptive Lock, which secures the screen when the user steps away, and Adaptive Dimming, which adjusts brightness based on activity. For security, it has the Microsoft Pluton chip, which provides additional protection against cyber threats. It uses a 14-inch OLED NanoEdge display that features a 1920 x 1200 resolution with 100% DCI-P3 color gamut and a 60Hz refresh rate.

As for audio, it has Snapdragon Sound technology onboard to improve voice calls and audio playback by reducing background noise. The laptop has 32GB of LPDDR5X RAM for smooth multitasking and a 1TB PCIe 4.0 SSD for fast storage and quick access to files.

The Zenbook A14 supports Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 for fast wireless connections. It includes:

However, their high price has kept them out of reach for many. This may soon change, as rumors suggest a more affordable Snapdragon X chip is on the way.

The Snapdragon X lineup began with the “Elite,” a premium chip designed to compete with Apple’s M-series processors in high-end laptops. These devices typically cost over $1,200, limiting their appeal to casual users. 

Qualcomm later introduced the “Plus” variant, which lowered laptop prices to around $1,000. Then in September, they also unveiled a more budget-conscious version of the Snapdragon X Plus, finding its way into devices like the Lenovo IdeaPad 5x 2-in-1, which launched at a cool $849.

An even more affordable Snapdragon X chip

And it now seems Qualcomm plans to offer even more affordable chips for Windows laptops. During a recent Investor Day presentation, Qualcomm teased an “entry-level” Snapdragon X chip aimed at sub-$700 Windows laptops. Qualcomm hopes this new addition will make Snapdragon X technology accessible to a broader audience.

Details about the chip’s performance remain sparse. Qualcomm has confirmed it will include the same Neural Processing Unit (NPU) found in higher-end models. The NPU enables the impressive battery life and AI features these processors are known for. 

This also means laptops powered by these chips will feature Copilot+ PC branding, which requires minimum specs such as 16GB of DDR5 RAM and 256GB of SSD storage. These features are likely to appear even in more affordable devices.

However, it’s unclear what sacrifices will be made to hit the lower price point. Reduced CPU cores or slightly downgraded graphical performance could be potential trade-offs. 

Qualcomm hasn’t announced a release date yet, but with CES 2025 just around the corner in January, the event seems like a likely stage for its debut.

While it started with bold efficiency claims from the company and ended with positive reviews regarding battery life, detailed information about the chipset was scarce until now.

In the latest news, Snapdragon X Elite’s kernel images and module distribution map have been exposed and compared with Apple M4, which leads to some surprising discoveries.

Snapdragon X Elite is only slightly larger than Apple M4

The Snapdragon X Elite has a core area of ​​169.6 square millimeters, which is almost exactly the same as the Apple M4. However, the Snapdragon chip is based on TSMC’s 4nm process while the Apple M4 is based on TSMC’s 3nm process.

So the Apple M4 can pack more transistors per square millimeter compared to the Snapdragon X Elite, which uses TSMC’s 4nm process. For those unfamiliar, as processes shrink, the space between transistors decreases, allowing more transistors to fit in the same die area. Therefore, the Apple M4 is likely to have a higher transistor count despite the similar core area, which suggests better performance and energy efficiency as compared to Qualcomm’s offering. But surprisingly, the difference in performance and energy efficiency doesn’t seem to be that big.

Notably, while transistor density is a big factor, architecture, design choices (e.g., number of CPU cores, cache size, clock speeds), and optimization also significantly impact performance. For instance, the design of the individual cores and the use of AI accelerators also matter.

A much larger CPU cluster and a relatively compact GPU

The Snapdragon X Elite is equipped with up to 12 Oryon architecture CPU cores, codenamed Phoenix, with a single area of ​​2.55mm2. This is slightly smaller than the Apple M4’s 3mm2 performance core and is exactly the same as the A16’s performance core. Each core has 192KB of L1 instruction cache and 96KB of L1 data cache, while every four cores share 12MB of 12-way L2 cache (36MB in total), with a single group area of ​​6.1mm2.

While the CPU cluster occupies significantly more space, the Adreno X1 GPU turns out to be only 24.3mm2, which is 25% smaller than that of Apple’s M4.

Qualcomm‘s foray into the Windows on Arm (WoA) laptop market with the Snapdragon X series has garnered significant attention since its launch on June 18th. 

Data from performance testing platform Geekbench reveals over 81,000 tests conducted globally in the past month, with 6.5% stemming from Snapdragon X devices. While this trails established players like Intel and AMD, it’s a respectable showing for a newcomer.

The Snapdragon X’s standout feature is its energy efficiency, heavily promoted by both Microsoft and major PC manufacturers. Benchmark tests consistently show laptops powered by the Snapdragon X achieving over 15 hours of battery life, which is impressive.

Additionally, Snapdragon X laptops are the first devices certified for Microsoft’s Copilot+ productivity suite, potentially offering improved workflow features.

However, the Snapdragon X launch hasn’t been without its hiccups. The highly anticipated Windows Recall feature was scrapped before release due to privacy and security concerns. 

Snapdragon X Elite notebooks also faced compatibility issues with apps due to their ARM architecture, and their integrated graphics performance lags behind Intel’s Arc offerings. Software developer support for the processor’s on-device AI processing also remains in its infancy, limiting the Snapdragon X’s AI capabilities.

Despite these challenges, the arrival of Snapdragon X presents a positive development for consumers. Similar to how Apple’s M-series chips disrupted the laptop market, the Snapdragon X pushes established players like Intel and AMD to innovate and deliver more powerful notebooks.

While the Snapdragon X currently doesn’t meet the needs of power users, we remain hopeful that Qualcomm will continue to make advancements. If the platform can address its existing issues, the future of the notebook processor market could see a compelling three-way battle for dominance.

Microsoft has finally announced the 7th Edition Surface and 11th Edition Surface Pro laptops in the Indian market. These laptops feature Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon X Elite and Snapdragon X Plus processors and offer Copilot+ support as well. The latest Surface series was first announced back in May, and it’s now arriving in India.

The Surface Pro (2024) is the latest top end laptop from the American tech giant. It packs a 2-in-1 design since its Surface Pro Flex Keyboard is detachable. There is also a customizable haptic touchpad and integrated pen storage. The laptop is equipped with either the Snapdragon X Elite or Snapdragon X Plus with Qualcomm Hexagon NPU. The company claims that the 11th Edition Surface Pro is 90 percent faster than the Surface Pro 9.

These processors are paired with up to 32GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 1TB of removable Gen 4 SSD storage. Connectivity options include two USB 4 ports (supports up to three external 4K displays), WiFi 7, optional 5G support, and Bluetooth 5.4. The front sports a 13-inch display, which can be upgraded to an OLED panel with HDR support. It runs on the Windows 11 Home operating system out of the box.

Buyers also get a 10-megapixel camera on the back, while the front houses a quad HD front camera with AI effects. For audio, you get 2W stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos support. A 39W power supply powers this device, although the Surface Pro supports up to 65W charging. Microsoft has made the notebook using 72 percent recycled materials and replaceable components.

Microsoft’s Surface 7th Edition laptop arrives with a 13.8-inch or 15-inch PixelSense touchscreen display that offers a 120Hz refresh rate, Dolby Vision IQ, and Adaptive Color technology. Under the hood, these devices are equipped with the Snapdragon X Elite or Snapdragon X Plus chips along with the Qualcomm Hexagon NPU. On a single full charge, the brand claims that the laptop can last for up to 22 hours on the 15-inch variant and up to 20 hours on the 13.8-inch option.

It also supports up to three external 4K displays like the Surface Pro. The processor is paired with up to 32GB of RAM and 1TB of removable Gen 4 SSD storage. The smaller 13.8-inch variant has a 39W adapter and the 15-inch option costs a 65W adapter. On the front, you get a Full HD Surface Studio Camera with AI effects. There is also an Omnisonic Speakers and Dolby Atmos.

Both of these variants support the Copilot+ PC features with a dedicated key on their keyboards. Is Snapdragon X Plus better than M3 in efficiency?

In a battery life and efficiency test from Alex Ziskind on YouTube, we get a fair idea of how the new Snapdragon chips perform in the real world. He approached the test with realism in mind to get a more accurate representation of what we can expect from these laptops. This test included coding, listening to music, and even certain intensive tasks. Alex took into account the different battery sizes of the laptops.

In the initial efficiency test measuring “Battery Drain vs Work Done”, the M2 MacBook Air was the most efficient, while the M3 MacBook Pro and M2 Max variants also saw impressive performance. On the other hand, the Surface Laptop 7th Edition outperformed other Snapdragon X Elite and X Plus powered laptops like the ASUS Vivobook S 15, Dell XPS 13, and Galaxy Book 4 16 Edge. It is worth noting that this efficiency test was more focused on intensive tasks that pushed the CPU cores.

In the automated workflow test to recreate a more realistic scenario, Ziskind reran the test playing YouTube videos occasionally, between writing and running the codes. This was a prolonged test with all laptops set to high performance. Surface Laptop 7 13 (X Plus) led the pack with the highest average efficiency, with the M3 MacBook Air 13 being the runner up.

The Snapdragon X Elite variant of the Surface Laptop 7 13 came in third, and performance much better than the Galaxy Book 4 Edge 16 and VivoBook S 15. The VivoBook S 15 OLED with 16GB of RAM, 1TB of SSD storage, Windows 11 Home, and the Snapdragon X Elite processor costs 124,990 INR (roughly 1,497 US Dollars).

To recall, the Vivobook S 15 sports a 15.6-inch ASUS Lumina OLED display with a 3K resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate, 600nits of peak brightness, 100 percent DCI-P3 color gamut, and a 16:9 aspect ratio. You get an FHD webcam with an IR sensor for added security on the front. Under the hood, the Snapdragon X Elite is paired with its Adreno GPU. Snapdragon X Elite vs Apple M3: Geekbench

Geekbench is a popular benchmark to test the CPU performance of chipsets. When both the chips were put to the test, the Snapdragon X Elite was able to score 2,753 points in the single-core test, whereas the M3 chip surpassed it by scoring 3,021 points.

However, the multi-core result is in favor of Snapdragon, and that too by a good margin. The Apple M3 managed to pull off 11,566 points, while the Snapdragon X Elite scored 14,151 points in the multi-core test on Geekbench 6.

The Apple M3 gets an edge over the Snapdragon X Elite in the single-core test. But the Snapdragon X Elite stuns the M3 chip in the multi-core test by leading with a big margin.

Snapdragon X Elite vs Apple M3: CineBench

CineBench is another popular benchmarking platform to access a computer’s CPU and GPU capabilities using real-world 3D rendering tasks.

The Snapdragon pulls off 1,738 and 13,487 points in the single-core and multi-core tests, respectively. Apple M3, on the other hand, has scored 1,892 points (single-core) and 10,394 points (multi-core).

The CineBench results are similar to that of Geekbench’s. Again, the Snapdragon X Elite leaves behind the Apple M3 by a big margin in multi-core tests while achieving a nearly same single-core score.

A higher multi-core core suggests that the Snapdragon X Elite might do a better job than the Apple M3 when doing tasks that require more than one core, such as video editing, 3D rendering, etc.

Snapdragon X Elite vs Apple M3: 3D Mark WildLife Extreme

3D Mark WildLife Extreme measures the GPU performance of a device. It’s a demanding test that uses features like high-rendering graphics, more complex geometry, and advanced graphics techniques.

On the 3D Mark WildLife Extreme benchmark, the Snapdragon X Elite has scored 6,260 points, whereas the Apple M3 gets 8,284 points.

The test suggests Apple M3-powered computers have better GPU performance than Snapdragon X Elite-powered computers. Keep in mind that 3D Mark WildLife Extreme focuses on short-term performance.

Snapdragon X Elite vs Apple M3: Gaming Test

Apple M3 achieves higher average frames per second (FPS) in all tested games. It clearly outperforms the Snapdragon X Elite. This means you’ll have a better gaming experience with Apple M3-powered Macs than with Windows computers powered by Snapdragon X Elite.

Snapdragon X Elite vs Apple M3: Battery Efficiency

Qualcomm claims 2X battery life on a laptop powered by the Snapdragon X Elite than one powered by the Intel Core Ultra 7 155H. It’s probably the best power-efficient chip for Windows, but how does it compare with Apple M3?

In the battery test performed by a popular YouTuber, Dave2D, the Asus Vivobook S15 (with 70 Wh battery pack) lasted for 10 hours and 26 minutes under light load, close to the MacBook Air M3 (11 hours and 18 minutes).

Tom’s Guide reports a drop from 100% to 47% after 12 hours of mixed usage (Photoshop, 20+ Chrome tabs, music, and hours of Netflix). This is a rare battery life seen on Windows laptops. It was only offered by Apple Silicons.

Final Thoughts

Qualcomm’s X Elite early reviews are very promising. It offers great performance, NPU capabilities, and battery life.

Apple Silicons finally have a strong competitor. This is the beginning of a new era for Windows, and it’s very exciting. It will also be exciting to watch what Intel and AMD have in store to remain top choices among Windows buyers.

Over the last couple of months, various PC brands have unveiled new laptops that feature Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite chip. This processor was launched last year and promised to offer impressive energy efficiency, great performance, and advanced AI capabilities. So here’s a list of all the notebooks from various brands that feature this chipset.

Acer

Back in May 2024, Acer unveiled the Swift 14 AI which is a new laptop model. This features Qualcomm’s high-end laptop chipset, the Snapdragon X Elite SoC. It arrives with a 14.5-inch screen with a 16:10 aspect ratio and a 120Hz refresh rate. The symbols on the trackpad and the laptop’s display lid are illuminated when Microsoft Copilot is being used. This model was announced for a 1,099 US Dollar price tag and is set to go on sale in August 2024.

ASUS

ASUS also has its very own Snapdragon X Elite offering. The company unveiled the Vivobook S 15 OLED last month. Previous iteration of this model ran on the Intel Meteor Lake-H chipset, but now, it also comes with the flagship ARM chipset for notebooks. This model is the brand-new ASUS AI PC, bringing a personalized AI experience based on the needs of the user. As the name suggests, it sports a 120Hz OLED HDR display.

Dell

Dell recently expanded its laptop offering with a new range of laptops with new Snapdragon X series chips. These models span across XPS, Inspiron, and Latitude series that target various needs and budgets. While the XPS 13 and Inspiron 14 Plus are powered by the Snapdragon X Plus, the Latitude 7455 and Latitude 5455 models have the Snapdragon X Elite options as well. The Latitude 7455 sports a QHD+ touchscreen display and cutting-edge Qualcomm Wi-Fi 7 technology, with optional 5G network support for seamless connectivity. These are set to launch later this year.

HP

Earlier today (19th June 2024), HP unveiled two new AI-powered laptops in India. This is the new EliteBook Ultra and the OmniBook X which first launched in the global market earlier this year. Both of these offer Snapdragon X Elite processor with Adreno graphics.

The duo comes with a dedicated NPU to accelerate AI related tasks locally on the system. HP’s Snapdragon X Elite powered notebooks feature the PolyCamera Pro which offers virtual interactions and AI filters like spotlight and auto framing. HP’s EliteBook Ultra has a 1699 US Dollar price tag, while the OmniBook X costs 1,149 US Dollars.

Lenovo

Similar to HP, Lenovo also has two notebooks that feature Snapdragon X Elite. This includes the Yoga Slim 7x 14 Gen 9 and the ThinkPad T14s Gen 6. The former is a thin and light notebook that weighs 1.28 kilograms, while the latter is built for working professionals and also has an ultra light weight of 1.24 kilograms. The Yoga Slim 7x 14 sports a 14.5-inch 3K 90Hz OLED panel.

Meanwhile, the ThinkPad T14s Gen 6 sports a 14-inch WUXGA (1920 x 1200) IPS panel. Talking about the pricing, the Yoga model is currently on pre-order on Lenovo’s website for 1,289 US Dollars. The upcoming ThinkPad option is also on pre-order on the brand’s website for 2,699 US Dollars. There is also a Yoga Air 14s Q8X9 in the works with the same chipset.

Microsoft

Microsoft unveiled two Copilot+ PCs in the market, which include the Surface Laptop 7th Edition and Surface Pro 11th Edition. These are powered by the Snapdragon X Elite and X Plus chips. The Pro model is expected to offer a 120Hz OLED panel and both entries may come with an overhauled design, thin bezels, and more improvements.

Samsung

The South Korean tech giant just announced its first Snapdragon X Elite laptop this week. It is the new Galaxy Book 4 Edge, which features a 14-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2x touchscreen display. This model promises to offer great battery life and portability for those who need performance on the go. It promises to offer up to 18 hours of battery life on a single full charge. It has a starting price tag of 1,349 US Dollars and is available for purchase.

While several brands have launched their Copilot+ PCs with the ARM-based Snapdragon X Elite processors, we have yet to see detailed reviews on their performance and battery life.

However, one Reddit user, u/caponica23, got their hands on the Samsung Galaxy Book 4 Edge early and shared some initial findings in an extensive thread. And the performance of the Snapdragon X Elite chip seems disappointing, falling short of Qualcomm’s marketing promises.

The laptop achieved a Geekbench single-core score of 1829 and a multi-core score of 11379 while running on battery power. Plugging it in offered minimal improvement, with scores of 1841 and 11537, respectively. However, these figures are significantly lower than Qualcomm’s press event claims of 2977 single-core and 15086 multi-core.

The user attributes the low benchmark scores to the CPU not reaching its advertised boost clock speeds. The Reddit review notes that the Snapdragon X Elite chip on the Book 4 Edge runs at 2.52GHz speed at maximum, which is much lower than the 4.0 GHz advertised by Qualcomm. 

A thread on X (formerly Twitter) by user INIYSA suggests that the PC might be throttling the CPU for thermal and battery management. Other laptops running Snapdragon X Elite models on Geekbench also show similar disappointing single-core scores in the 1700s-1800s range. 

The X user compared the X Elite’s single-core performance to that of the iPhone 12 Mini, noting that it is even slower than the 4-year-old A14 chip.

With Qualcomm’s review embargo still in place, it is uncertain if a firmware update will address these performance issues before official reviews are released.

Gaming performance was equally underwhelming at first. According to the user, Resident Evil 7: Village ran at 1080p with only 40-50 FPS and severe frame drops, even with AMD’s FSR in performance mode. However, the user later reported that a new update fixed the GPU issues, and the game now runs at 60-100 FPS with no frame drops.

The update seems to have resolved the GPU performance lag, so we are hopeful that another update could improve the processor performance to match Qualcomm’s promises. Otherwise, the initial benchmarks for the Snapdragon X Elite raise serious concerns about its capabilities in Windows on ARM devices.

Arm argues this violates Qualcomm’s contractual obligation and seeks to prevent the use of these Nuvia designs.

Qualcomm has been instrumental in building the Windows on Arm ecosystem. They’ve facilitated the development of native apps like Chrome and Slack, crucial for the platform’s success. Some speculate that Arm’s lawsuit aims to eliminate Qualcomm and replace them with their own Cortex designs, potentially benefiting from higher licensing fees with companies like MediaTek. This aligns with Arm’s past preference for companies using their pre-designed Cortex cores.

Despite the legal battle, the Snapdragon X-series launch is expected to proceed on June 18th with products from major manufacturers like Microsoft, HP, Dell, and Lenovo. The NPU of the Snapdragon X Elite X1E-80-100 achieved a score of 1787 in the UL Procyon AI test. This handily surpasses the scores of competing processors: the M3 (898 points) and Ultra 7 155H (480 points).

There is a 31% improvement over the Core Ultra 7 155H

Qualcomm claims the Hexagon NPU operates with significantly lower power consumption compared to its rivals. It boasts a 22% reduction compared to the M3 and a 31% improvement over the Ultra 7 155H.

Qualcomm crowns the Snapdragon X Elite with the title of “highest NPU performance per watt.” This translates to an energy efficiency advantage of 2.6 times over the M3 and a staggering 5.4 times over the Ultra 7 processor. While it’s important to note these tests were conducted on Qualcomm reference designs and specific laptops, the results highlight the X Elite’s potential for efficient AI processing.

Qualcomm showcased the GIMP + Stable Diffusion 1.5 raw image processing capabilities of the Snapdragon X Elite. Here, the NPU delivered 3 times the speed compared to the Core Ultra 7 155H, hinting at its potential for real-world applications.

Microsoft recently debuted its new Surface Laptop featuring ARM-based Snapdragon SoCs. These laptops are currently available for pre-order, with shipping starting in July. That means there’s still some time before we can see the real-life performance of the new chipset.

However, hardware enthusiast HXL recently shared benchmarks for the new Surface Laptop powered by the Snapdragon X Elite processor and it shows the processor might hold its own against Apple’s M2 chip. 

The benchmark ran was CPU-Z on a Surface Laptop 7 with the Snapdragon X Elite X1E-78-100 SoC. Since the CPU-Z isn’t available on MacBooks, HXL booted a virtual Windows 11 to run the benchmark.

Note that virtual machines can introduce performance overhead, potentially hindering the M2’s score. So take this data with a pinch of salt. 

The Surface Laptop 7 scored a significantly higher multi-threaded score (7,923.5 points) compared to the M2 in the virtual machine (3,822.3 points), while the M2 held a slight edge in single-threaded performance (749.5 points vs 686.0 points).

Snapdragon X Elite is claimed to outperform current offerings from Intel and AMD. However, this is the first real-world comparison we’ve seen for Apple silicon. 

It shows that Snapdragon X Elite laptops could be a viable alternative for users who prefer thin-and-light designs and extended battery life, while still offering a choice between Windows and macOS.

Qualcomm is also bringing official Linux support for the Snapdragon X processors which will certainly appeal to those who prefer open-source operating systems. 

The benchmark shows that the X Elite could be a strong competitor against Apple’s well-regarded M-series chipset. However, we’ll need to see more data to fully understand how it compares.

The render images of Samsung Galaxy Book4 Edge series were already leaked earlier. Now, materials to be used in Samsung‘s commercial promotions have emerged, revealing many details about the upcoming laptops.

There are two regular Book4 Edge models, one with a 14-inch display and the other with a 16-inch display. Book4 Edge Pro, on the other hand, comes only in a 16-inch model. These laptops have model numbers NP940XMA-KB1DE, NP960XMA-KB1DE, and NP960XMB-KB1DE.

Samsung’s advertisement image reveals that Snapdragon X Elite has 45 TOPS NPU computing power. All leaked ad images belong to the Book4 Edge Pro. The upcoming laptop features a 61.8Wh battery and supports 65W fast charging via USB-C. Samsung promises a 22-hour battery life during a movie playback at 1080p resolution and 150 nits screen brightness.

Additionally, it was already known that the Galaxy Book4 Edge Pro has dual USB-C ports, but newly emerged leaked images revealed that both ports support the USB 4.0 standard. Snapdragon X Elite is powerful enough to support not just one but two USB 4.0 ports.

The Inspiron 14 7441 Plus might be released with Windows 11 24H2 Preview Build installed, and the rumors suggest that this version of Windows will come equipped with AI Explorer and various AI features. Leaked render images reveal that the design of the Inspiron 14 7441 Plus is very similar to the previous Inspiron laptops but with a sleeker and thinner profile. The device features 2 USB-C ports, 1 USB-A port, and 1 microSD card slot, with a fingerprint sensor located on the power button.

Additionally, render images of the XPS 13 9345 have been leaked, showing a similar design to the Dell XPS 13 Plus. According to Windows Report, the upcoming laptop will be introduced with either the Snapdragon X Elite or Intel Ultra processor, as the previous 13 Plus model came with the 13th gen Intel Core i7-1360P processor.

ASUS has revealed details about its first laptop to be powered by the Snapdragon X Elite processor. The ASUS Vivobook S 15 OLED version is slated for launch on May 20 and will join the current model of the laptop that is running on an Intel Meteor Lake-H chipset. The information was contained in an official press release by ASUS. The new laptop is a premium ultra-portable AI notebook and will fully support the latest AI features of ASUS and Microsoft.

The Vivobook S 15 OLED version will likely be unveiled during ASUS’ virtual launch event on May 20, which will be a collaborative engagement between ASUS, Microsoft, and Qualcomm. Microsoft will expectedly announce consumer versions of its Surface Laptop 6 and Surface Pro 10 during the May 20 event.

ASUS says the Vivobook S 15 OLED version is the first new-era ASUS AI PC and it will be a successor to the S 16 OLED. It will provide a personalized AI experience based on the individual needs of the user, according to the company. It has a model number of S5507, with the current Meteor Lake-H processor version of the S 15 OLED having a model number of S5506.

The new ASUS laptop will come with a 16-inch screen and will be larger than current models like the ThinkPad T14s Gen 6, Microsoft Surface Laptop, 6, and a few others that are powered by the same chipset. The ASUS AI PC series lineup of products will also be displayed at the Computex 2024 Taipei Computer Show. ASUS will provide a further update on the upcoming release of the Vivobook S 15 OLED on May 7, as it is yet to provide pricing and availability information for the new laptop.

Microsoft will release the Snapdragon X series-powered Surface Pro 10 and Surface Laptop 6 on May 20. We have been hearing about the development for a while now. But it turns out that Microsoft isn’t the only company to announce their new Windows on Arm machine powered by the new Snapdragon X series chips. ASUS has now officially confirmed that it will join the virtual launch event on May 20, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. PST.

The launch event will be a collaboration between Qualcomm Microsoft and ASUS. Other manufacturers such as Lenovo may also join the event with their contribution to the Windows on Arm platform.

The tagline from ASUS for the upcoming launch event goes “Next Level. AI Incredible.” The company is focusing on “innovative AI functions” alongside improved performance with its new Windows on Arm machine. According to the company, it will be an ‘ultraportable’ premium laptop.

During the virtual launch event, ASUS will be accompanied by distinguished speakers from industry giants such as Qualcomm and Microsoft, who will likely focus on the benefits of the Windows on Arm platform and the inclusion of artificial intelligence in PCs. The event will also share the collaborative efforts of the companies in rejuvenating the Arm-based platform.

For those unfamiliar with the development, there are two new Arm-based processors from Qualcomm – the Snapdragon X Elite and a slightly more affordable Snapdragon X Plus. The X Elite chip equips 12 Qualcomm Oryon CPU cores and the X Plus offers 10 of them. The latter one also runs at slightly lower clock speeds. Based on the benchmark listings we have come across so far and the ones Qualcomm themselves have shown off so far, both the performance and power efficiency look promising.

However, there hasn’t been much information about how (in which setup) the tests were performed and there have also been reports that some of the capabilities the company has shown off could be misleading. Nonetheless, we will soon get to see how the new chips perform in real life as laptop manufacturers power their devices with them.

Qualcomm recently introduced its new Snapdragon X series of processors for Windows on Arm laptops. The company revealed four chipsets in the line, where three of them belong to the Snapdragon X Elite tier while the remaining is the Snapdragon X Plus which will power more affordable Windows laptops.

However, according to industry insider Kamila Wojciechowska (via Android Authority), Qualcomm might have further plans for the Snapdragon X Plus lineup. The tipster says Qualcomm is working on a second and more powerful variant of the X Plus chipset, called X1P-42-100. 

It will feature eight Oryon CPU cores, up from six on the X1P-64-100. Notably, the X1P-42-100 is rumored to lack the four efficiency cores present in its counterpart. 

While this could translate to better performance for the X1P-42-100, it comes with fewer PCIe lanes compared to the X1P-64-100.

The X1P-42-100 is also said to have limitations in video encoding and decoding capabilities, supposedly capped at 4K/30 FPS encoding and 4K/60 FPS decoding. 

In contrast, the X1P-64-100 is rumored to offer 4K/60 FPS encoding and 4K/120 FPS decoding. Many other details about the X1P-42-100, such as CPU clock speeds and GPU specifications, remain under wraps for the time being.

Wojciechowska’s leaks extend beyond the X series, suggesting Qualcomm is also working on a server-grade chipset codenamed “SD1”. The processor is purported to feature 80 Oryon cores on a 9470-pin LGA socket and will use TSMC’s 5nm (N5P) production process.

The leak also suggests that SD1 will support 16 channels of DDR5-5600 RAM, boast 70 PCIe 5.0 lanes, and have the capability to run two chipsets simultaneously. 

Furthermore, Wojciechowska mentions that the SD1 integrates Compute Express Link (CXL) 1.1. However, other details about the silicon are unclear at this stage.

Qualcomm unveiled the Snapdragon X Elite processor in October last year. The chipmaker recently announced an affordable version of the Elite, the Snapdragon X Plus. For those unaware, the company’s Snapdragon X series is for PC platforms and aims to compete against legacy chipmakers Intel and AMD and even Apple’s M-series. Snapdragon X CPU-powered laptops are surfacing in benchmarks in recent times with the latest one coming from Dell. 

Dell Inspiron 14 Plus 7441 appears on Geekbench

The Geekbench listing confirms that Dell is working on a Snapdragon X-powered CPU laptop. The database mentions it as a Dell Inspiron 14 Plus 7441. It reveals a Snapdragon X Elite (X1E80100) processor with cluster 1 comprising of eight cores and cluster 2 of four cores. The CPU is clocked at a base frequency of 3.42 GHz. The laptop is listed with 16GB RAM onboard and runs on Windows 11 Pro OS out of the box. 

In the Geekbench’s single-core and multi-core test results, the Dell Inspiron 14 Plus 7441 scored 1,765 and 4,367 points respectively. The multi-core scores of the laptop are weirdly lower under 5,000 compared to the Microsoft Surface 6 and Samsung Galaxy Book 4 Edge which have the same chipset underneath but ticking at a speed of 4.01GHz.

The Dell Inspiron 14 Plus 7441 is likely tested with incorrect settings or lower power configuration that resulted in much lower multi-core test scores. A higher clock speed would have recorded better performance results. It’s worth noting that several factors affect the benchmark scores. 

Alongside Microsoft, Samsung, and Dell, a Lenovo laptop had also surfaced on Geekbench with Snapdragon X Elite last month.

However, Qualcomm claims the X Plus still delivers 10% faster multi-threaded performance than the Apple M3 and 37% faster performance than the Intel Core Ultra 7 155H, all while consuming significantly less power.

The X Plus offers similar features as the X Elite, including LPDDR5x RAM support, NVMe storage over PCIe Gen 4, UFS 4.0 storage, 5G and Wi-Fi 7 connectivity, USB4 connectivity, and AV1 encoding and decoding for 4K HDR video. Qualcomm has shown off some impressive numbers showcasing the capabilities of its upcoming Snapdragon X Elite chip. The benchmark results Qualcomm revealed to the press hint that the upcoming Windows-on-Arm laptops powered by the Snapdragon X Elite chip will outcompete both Intel processors and Apple’s M series chips.

No details were shared about how they performed the tests, and the comparison charts were unverified

However, the company never provided much details about which setup tested the Snapdragon X Elite chip. “Qualcomm has been far from forthcoming with its curated benchmark results that have been presented to the press,” claims a recent report from SemiAccurate. “Qualcomm benchmarks are impossible to recreate even by class-leading OEM developers.” The charts comparing the performance with its competitors’ offerings were also unverified.

Later on, when device manufacturers got their hands on the new X series chip, they could not even get close to the numbers that Qualcomm showed off to the press. According to SemiAccurate, OEMs first saw numbers not even reaching 50% of the claims. In response to the disparity, Qualcomm engineers blamed poor optimization of Windows-on-Arm and poor cooling of the devices. OEMs couldn’t improve the results much even after working on the cooling solution. A source (anonymous) even compared the Snapdragon X Elite to Intel Celeron chips. For those unfamiliar, these are Intel’s entry-level chips with low power requirements.

Nonetheless, if the X Elite chips are going to be mounted on devices made by the same OEMs that are testing the chips and are going to run Windows, it shouldn’t matter how Qualcomm tested the new Snapdragon X Elite.

The company also avoided answering more technical questions about its upcoming Snapdragon X series. They promised deep technical briefings before the launch, which is scheduled to be somewhere around “mid-2024”.

Qualcomm has also revealed the Snapdragon X Plus, a cut-down and more affordable version of the previously announced Snapdragon X Elite chip. The announcement also reportedly lacked the deep technical elements originally promised, with more time spent on potential camera specs enabled by the SoC than any real technical stats or deep analysis.

On top of that, there’s talk of a Snapdragon X Plus which will be targeted at more affordable ARM-based Windows notebooks.

Now, the company has shared a short teaser video hinting at a major announcement for its Snapdragon X line of processors. The video, posted on the official Snapdragon X account, shows a CPU chipset transforming into a 3D “X” with the caption ” Stay tuned for 4/24.”

Qualcomm didn’t directly confirm the Snapdragon X Elite and X Plus launch in the teaser, but speculations point out that the big reveal will indeed happen on April 24th. 

Adding weight to these speculations is the recent leak of the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 which is rumored to house the Snapdragon X Elite chip. Reportedly, the upcoming Lenovo notebook could be the first to feature Qualcomm’s new SoC.

The Snapdragon X Elite chip is previously touted for its dedicated AI capabilities for PCs, boasting an impressive 45 TOPS of NPU performance. Benchmarks suggest it surpasses Apple’s M3 chip by a significant margin on Geekbench. 

Surprisingly, on Geekbench, it even performed on par with Intel’s Core i7-13700HX, Core i9-13900H, and AMD’s latest Ryzen 9 8945HS mobile flagship.

If these numbers match the real-life performance, Qualcomm’s new SoC could give serious competition to established industry players.

Moreover, Qualcomm recently showcased its prowess in video editing software Davinci Resolve at a demo event. There’s even a rumor of a Windows 11 AI feature that might be exclusive to Snapdragon X Elite-powered devices.

Even though computers with ARM processors are out, x64 software has not disappeared yet. For instance, Apple, despite releasing ARM M series processors, used a translation layer called Rosetta for x64 apps to run on ARM CPUs.

Microsoft claims that its translation layer is working even better than Apple’s Rosetta 2. In fact, a translation layer from x64 to ARM was introduced in Windows over 2 years ago, and it appears that Microsoft is now achieving the desired success with it.

Another piece of information acquired by The Verge is that the Surface 10 Pro and Surface Laptop 6 devices will come with Qualcomm‘s Snapdragon X Elite processor. While it was already announced that these devices would come with Intel Core Ultra series processors earlier, it’s now revealed that there will also be Snapdragon X Elite variants.

The Snapdragon X Elite will not only provide benefits in performance and energy efficiency but will also equip Windows with AI-related features through its NPU. It will enable Copilot to access any context on your computer and provide you with better responses. Moreover, it will be possible to perform image creation on the device using custom image models. Microsoft is labeling its new computers as “next-gen AI Copilot PCs.”

Although a device with Snapdragon X Elite has not been released to the public yet, Qualcomm has already published some benchmarks revealing that it’s better than Apple M2. While it’s claimed that Windows games won’t perform as well, they will at least be running. Microsoft’s devices with Snapdragon X Elite will be unveiled on May 20th.

Last month, a mysterious Lenovo laptop powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite processor appeared on the Geekbench. However, the performance scores revealed by the benchmark didn’t quite meet Qualcomm’s claims for its new ARM chip.

Now, a new Lenovo laptop has undergone Geekbench testing again, but this time under a different model name, 4810UV0100. And surprisingly, the results seem promising this time around.

The latest Geekbench 6 results show a significant 49% performance improvement compared to the previous benchmark result.

The new Lenovo laptop, equipped with the Snapdragon X Elite processor, achieved a single-core score of 2,427 and a multi-core score of 14,254 while operating on a “Balanced” power plan. Score-wise, it’s a substantial gain from 1,628 and 11,392, respectively.

There could be several factors contributing to this sudden surge in performance of the SoC. Geekbench 6 may have made optimizations that work more effectively with this chipset.

Additionally, the test Lenovo laptop might have a refined cooling system resulting in a better score overall. However, it’s important to note that Geekbench’s short test duration may not fully assess the sustained performance capabilities of the device.

Another possibility is that as the Snapdragon X Elite is nearing its release, software tailored for the chipset may have been better optimized.

Qualcomm says the X Elite will come in 23W to 80W power options. The recent benchmark shows the laptop running on a Balanced power plan. So it’s difficult to determine the exact Thermal Design Power (TDP) of the chipset at the moment.

Furthermore, it appears that Lenovo may be testing multiple models with the Snapdragon X Elite chip, as this is the second Lenovo laptop to appear on Geekbench featuring the new ARM chip.

Back in October 2023, Qualcomm unveiled the highly anticipated Snapdragon X Elite. This chipset is claimed to be faster than the Apple M2 Max chipset. Now, we have a better idea of its gaming performance as the chip was recently seen running Baldur’s Date 3.

To recall, Qualcomm promised that the Snapdragon X Elite won’t require porting of x86-based games since they will run smoothly on the ARM chipset. The new processor will be featured on the next gen laptops and the official announcement confirms that it will support most games that are available on Windows PCs. Developers that want to run their games on the ARM processor can either run natively on ARM64, run hybrid on ARM64EC, or run x64 based emulation.

It is worth noting that only the first two options guarantee a better performance overall. For those unaware, the Snapdragon X Elite’s Adreno GPU is capable of outputting 4.6TFLOPs and supports DX12, DX11, Vulkan, OpenGL, as well as legacy support for DX9 and OpenGL 4.6. As per official notes, the chipset was seen offering an 80 percent performance uplift against the AMD Radeon 780M iGPU.

In a video shared by Devin Arthur, we can see the chipset in action running Baldur’s Gate 3. On 1080p resolution, the game was capable of painting a framerate of around 30 frames per second. Unfortunately, the finer graphics settings are unknown. But this does paint a positive picture for gaming on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon powered laptops. The company isn’t claiming a powerhouse in gaming with this chip, but we can expect to see improvements in the performance over time with optimizations and driver updates.

For over a decade and a half, Qualcomm has been chasing the dream of an Arm-based Windows laptop that offers compelling performance and battery life.

Although there have been some small victories along the way, Qualcomm-powered Windows devices have often failed to meet mainstream expectations, leaving Intel and AMD as the dominant players.

However, Qualcomm’s latest entry, the Snapdragon X Elite chip, offers an interesting new promise: the ability to run existing x86/64 games without the need for developers to port them to Arm. If successful, this could be a game-changer for Windows on Arm.

Apple‘s change to M-series silicons has set the bar high in the industry. Their chips have delivered remarkable performance and efficiency gains, even when running legacy x86 software through the Rosetta 2 emulation layer.

Windows on Arm has tried to play catch up, but it hasn’t yet delivered the same seamless experience for everyday consumers. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite looks to change that narrative.

The company says it’s working closely with game developers to ensure their titles “just work” on upcoming Snapdragon-powered laptops.

The key is advanced emulation, allowing x86/64 games to run at near full speed. Qualcomm claims that most games are GPU-bound and that its Adreno GPU drivers fully support modern graphics standards, negating any major performance hits due to emulation.

If Qualcomm’s claims so far are true, Snapdragon X Elite can bring a new era of Arm-based laptops. Of course, there’s some skepticism with unreleased hardware, but Qualcomm’s confidence is certainly reassuring.

But there are some caveats too. There could be issues with games that use kernel-level anti-cheat software or rely heavily on AVX instruction sets. However, if Qualcomm delivers on its promises, Snapdragon X Elite could be a significant milestone for Windows on Arm.

Samsung recently introduced its Galaxy Book 4 series globally, but there seems to be another exciting reveal on the horizon. A mysterious newcomer, the Samsung Galaxy Book 4 Edge, has popped up on the Geekbench benchmarking platform, offering some exciting details about the upcoming device.

Surprisingly, the Galaxy Book 4 Edge packs Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon X Elite processor paired with 16GB of RAM and runs Windows 11 Home (64-bit). 

The benchmark not only confirms that Samsung will be partnering with Qualcomm on laptops but also indicates that the company may not yet be ready to deploy its own Exynos chips for larger devices. It is likely a wise move, given Samsung’s current focus on refining the Exynos line for smartphones.

The Galaxy Book 4 Edge with Snapdragon X Elite achieved impressive Geekbench 6.2.2. scores: 2,706 points in single-core and a whopping 12,646 points in multi-core tests.

While these figures of the Snapdragon X Elite clearly outperform Apple’s M1 and M2 chips, it falls short against the newer M3 (excluding the M Pro line).

However, making a direct comparison between the Snapdragon X Elite and Apple’s M-series chips is a bit tricky in itself. The inherent differences between Windows 11 on ARM and MacOS make it difficult to gauge real-world performance solely based on benchmarks.

Apple’s excellent software optimization for its M-chips gives it an edge over any other PC device. So it remains to be seen if Qualcomm and Microsoft can achieve similar synergy.

Rumors also hint that Qualcomm’s new chip will find its way into Microsoft’s upcoming Surface Laptop 6 and Surface Pro 10. This would position Samsung as a direct competitor to Microsoft’s established Surface line.

Nevertheless, it’s surprising to see Samsung placing trust in Qualcomm for a new addition to its premium laptop lineup, particularly considering Qualcomm’s relatively recent entry into the consumer PC chip market.

Qualcomm introduced the Snapdragon X Elite processor in October 2023, with plans for it to power upcoming Windows laptops in 2024. This processor boasts the custom-designed Qualcomm Oryon CPU, promising better performance compared to its competitors.

However, recent benchmarks of a Lenovo laptop featuring this chip reveal performance scores that fall short of Qualcomm’s initial claims.

In the Geekbench 6.2 tests, the Snapdragon X Elite scored 1,628 points in single-core performance and 11,392 points in multi-core. These scores are notably lower than Qualcomm’s own benchmark results (2,777/14,056 at 23 Watts, 2,966/15,239 at 80 Watts). 

The specific wattage at which this chip operates isn’t specified, but the configuration confirms an 8+4 CPU core setup.

The cause of this underperformance isn’t clear, but the benchmark results point towards inconsistent clock speeds, indicating that the chip might be a pre-production sample in need of optimization.

In separate tests where the chip was evaluated individually, it performed better, achieving a single-core score of 2,574 and a multi-core score of 12,562. This suggests that the Lenovo laptop used for the initial benchmarks may require further optimization.

The tested Lenovo laptop also features an unnamed Adreno GPU, which similarly exhibited subpar performance in benchmarks, likely again due to the pre-production state of the chip. The GPU scored just 10 points in the Geekbench OpenCL benchmark.

The laptop comes equipped with 32GB of RAM and runs on a Windows 11 Pro Insider Preview build.

While the Snapdragon X Elite holds potential for Windows laptops, the initial benchmark results indicate that Qualcomm has some optimization work to do before the chip is ready for market release.

Based on 4nm architecture, the processor bundles 12 high-performance cores clocked at 3.8GHz and a dual-core boost of 4.3GHz. It bundles Qualcomm Adreno GPU with 4.6 TFLOPs and DX12 API support. Its LPDDR5x RAM offers 42MB of total cache and 136 GB/s memory bandwidth for its capacity to support 64 GB memory. Considering the competition, the chipset would offer 50% better performance.

Snapdragon X Elite Specifications

In connectivity, the new chip integrates support for WiFi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4, which is a considerable development over its predecessor that lends support for up to WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1. Interestingly, the Video Processing Unit now supports AV11 encoding and decoding.

Qualcomm’s new processor will offer better power efficiency with similar performance. Like its predecessor, Snapdragon 8cx Gen3, the Snapdragon X Elite will have DirectX 12 support and better computational features than the Xbox Series S, which houses AMD RDNA2 architecture. The Chispet’s AI capabilities also have enormous potential, which can be used to enhance the user experience.

It would be worth waiting for Qualcomm’s summit which is scheduled for October 24 before jumping to conclusions about the Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite.
