Xiaomi has finally unleashed the much-expected ceramic version of the Mi Mix 2, nearly two months after the flagship model was announced. The Mi Mix 2 comes in two versions, a ceramic version with an aluminium alloy frame and a full ceramic version. What just got released is the full ceramic version and you know what, it comes with a mammoth 8GB RAM and even the internal memory is 128GB. As a result of the design and ramped up memory, the version clutches a higher 4699 Yuan ($706) price tag.

The Mi Mix 2 Ceramic version is available in the traditional black colour and also has a White colour variant. which is a rare addition. Recall that Xiaomi had also released a White coloured variant for the Mi Mix at CES 2017 and the wide acceptance of that colour edition may have spurred the release of the same variant for the Mi Mix 2.  Apart from the paint job, the White variant also comes with a couple of tweaks, like having a 18K gold ring around the rear camera and fingerprint sensor also mounted at the rear.

Apart from the gold-plated ring, the entire body is covered in ceramic which has gone through a number of tests to ensure that it meets the desired standard. The body has been subjected to a temperature test of up to 1400°C while also subjected to a strength test of up to 240 tons. As for the packaging, it comes in the same packaging box as the 6GB RAM version and inside the box, you’ll find the Mix 2, a charging adapter and USB cable.

Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 is no doubt the company’s main flagship for 2017 even though some were left disappointed due to the fact that the device didn’t meet their expectation. The Mi Mix 2 ceramic white variant has again been spotted online in the hands of well-known lady tech analyst Sun Changxu. At the same time, a Weibo user also disclosed that the Mi Mix 2 8GB RAM version would soon go on sale and would be available not just in Ceramic White but the black Ceramic version will also get an 8GB RAM version. The Ceramic white edition is said to have been manufactured by being subjected to a temperature as high as 1,400 degrees centigrade within a 7 days period. The process is a complicated one but the product is a beautiful finishing.

The Ceramic version may likely be released well in time for the 11.11 sales promotion which is usually a big one for Xiaomi. November 11 is the date. As for the price, the 8GB RAM version will be priced at about 4699 Yuan (around $700).

Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 opened up for reservation on the same day it was launched in China. In just one day, the reservations had hit over 250,000 in less than 24 hours after it was launched. Two days after, the reservations have already surpassed 700,000 on Xiaomi’s Mi Mall and stood at 705,434 as at the time of filing this report.

The Mi Mix 2 reservations only opened on Mi Mall and there are no indications when the device will be available on other channels. While not all the reservations will transform to real sales, the figures show the level of interests the device commands. The Mix 2 will go on sale on September 15 and we still expect the sales to be a record breaker. he reservations will be opened until September 15 and we expect the figures to surpass 1 million persons. It remains to be seen if there is enough stock to prevent long queues of persons waiting to buy the Mix 2.

As a reminder, the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 features a 5.99-inch FHD+ display with a resolution of 2160 x 1080. It is powered by a Snapdragon 835 chip with an Adreno 540 GPU. The processor is backed by a 6GB RAM on some models while there are three storage versions; 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB. There is also an 8GB RAM + 128GB Special Edition. The Mi MIX 2 packs a single 12MP Sony IM386 sensor at the rear as well as a 5MP selfie camera. There is a 4,400mAH battery under the hood with QC 3.0 and a rear mounted fingerprint sensor. There is also dual WiFi band support and it supports 43 bands, 22 of which are LTE bands, including band 20. The Mi MIX 2 runs on MIUI 9 based on Android Nougat, is available in black only except for the Special Ceramic edition and it starts at 3299 yuan (∼$506) for the base model with 6GB RAM + 64GB storage.

Xiaomi has already officially revealed that its flagship Mi Mix 2 will be launched on September 11 which is barely a week away. It is already a regular in leaks and rumors that the Mi Mix 2 will utilize a Snapdragon 835 processor but this goes to confirm that indeed Qualcomm’s latest chip would be found on board the Mix 2. Apart from confirming the chipset, the Weibo post also teases the Mix 2 as coming with full-screen 2.0. The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 is billed to be launched on September 11 and already Xiaomi has released an official poster which confirms that. Ahead of the launched, what could be termed the biggest leak of the Mi Mix 2 has appeared online and it brings along with it a wave of listed specs the device is expected to pack.

The leak comes in form of the Mi Mix screenshot displaying the about phone section and thus revealing a lot about the flagship model. One aspect that would come as a surprise is that the Mi Mix 2 is listed as packing a Snapdragon 836 processor. The SD 836 has featured in several rumors and is actually being expected as a slight upgrade of the SD 835 but no one would have thought the Mi Mix 2 would be among the first, that is if it will not be the first flagship model to utilise the chip.

Apart from Snapdragon 836 processor, the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 is revealed to run on Android’s latest OS – Android 8.0 Oreo with a touch of MIUI 9. Other details we can scoop from the leaked screenshot include a 6.2-inch display with a resolution of 2960 x 1440pixels as well as a 4,400mAh battery and 256GB storage. The screenshot also reveals the Mi Mix 2 will come with 20MP rear camera, perhaps on its main sensor because the Mix 2 is expected to pack a dual camera setup at its rear.

Just last week Xiaomi Mi Mix designer Philippe Starck thrilled us with a concept video of the Mi Mix 2. The video proved to be a very popular one, amassing over 115k views especially due to its full-screen design which is touted to have even lesser bezels than the Mi Mix. Since then more leaks of the device has been making the rounds but leaked photos have been lacking. But now, the rear cover of the Mi Mix 2 has leaked purportedly from the supply chain.

There is no way for us to verify if the casing is actually for the Mi Mix 2 but it indeed looks like one for a phablet device and the design resembles the Mi Mix’s rear cover with two vertical openings another for an LED flash at the side of the first opening. If the Mi Mix 2 will be featuring a dual camera setup which is the rave of the moment, then there isn’t room for a rear fingerprint sensor which suggests the use of a front in-display fingerprint sensor or the 3D face recognition technology Xiaomi is rumoured to be developing for use on its flagships. But these are just openings, so we cannot determine if it is going to house a camera and fingerprint sensor or dual cameras.

The cover is coloured in white and the glossy look makes it look like it has a ceramic body. But the two screw ports by the side of the USB Type-C port suggest this could be having a metal body since the Mi Mx doesn’t have such screws. There is a rumour already that the Mix 2 will be ditching the use of ceramics which usually slow down the mass production process.

As for the specs, the Mi Mix 2 is expected to feature a 6-inch JDI display with a Snapdragon 835 processor onboard. The device is said to feature a 12MP Sony IMX386 sensor at the rear which should be more powerful than the not-so-inspiring 16MP OV16880 sensor on the Mi Mix. The Mix 2 will, however, feature a 5MP OV5675 sensor for selfies and a 3,400mAh battery. The flagship is expected to be launched on September 12 but no word from Xiaomi on that just yet.

If this is true, it means the device will be dropping sooner than expected but it also supports talks of Xiaomi hoping to use the sleekly designed Mix 2 to grab some market shares from Apple by releasing the model at the same period the iPhone 8 will be launched. Already, we recently saw the Mi Mix take a cut in its price up to 500 Yuan and that could indicate the Mix 2’s launch is very close.

There is going to be a second memory variant that would have 8GB of RAM and a whopping 256GB storage inside, according to the latest details. That also doesn’t sound ridiculous as the Chinese industry is gradually shifting towards 8GB RAM sized flagship models. The details also include that the Mix 2 will come with a price tag of 3,999 Yuan (around $599) for the 6GB RAM variant and 4,999 Yuan (~$749) for the 8GB RAM variant.

It is no longer news that Xiaomi will be launching its next generation Mi Mix 2 this year and that the device is already in the works with Phillipe Starck still providing the design. Details of the device have been very scarce in coming as Xiaomi has maintained a long silence about it, perhaps with the intention of springing a surprise. We already know, though, that the Mi Mix 2 will come with a high screen to body ratio and recently a photo shared by Lei Jun suggests that the device will adopt a similar 18:9 aspect ratio used on the Galaxy S8.

The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 renders have allegedly popped up online from China and one of the things that need to be noted is that there will likely be a variant sporting a Bright Silver body just like the Mi 6 did. The Mi Mix 2 is also said to come with an enhanced display with the screen-to-body ratio said to be as high as 95%. Apart from that, the renders also show the device as coming with well-rounded edges and a nearly bezel-less design. Bezels will only be present on the bottom edge with the other aspects completely bezel-less and curved on all the display edges.

We only get to see the front aspect of the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 from the renders so, we still don’t know if there is a rear fingerprint sensor but there are speculations that Xiaomi may not feature an in-display fingerprint sensor if the device is released this year. The Mi Mix features a virtual navigation key and also will use a Cantilever piezoelectric ceramic technology which replaces the traditional earpiece due to the absence of bezels.

Xiaomi is said to partner with AAC technologies who will develop a better, new generation technology known as AAC actuator which would be used for the ear piece sound output. The AAC actuator is said to achieve a better screen sound, especially at low frequency. It also works better with the 3GPP standard. The source of this leaked details also tips that the flagship model may be released around September, at the same period the iPhone 8 is coming out, obviously to grab some market shares from the Apple flagship due to its price tag which is expected to be less than iPhone 8’s. The price is rumoured to be up to 4999 Yuan (around $750) but this is just a speculation, nothing of such has been officially revealed. We expect more leaks to emerge as the month rolls by.

Xiaomi took the smartphone industry by storm last year when it announced the bezel-less Mi Mix concept phone actually went commercial unlike other concept devices. The Mi Mix was a mixture of innovative technology right from the ceramic body to the display to the earpiece and others. Due to the 91.3% screen-to-body ratio and teh absence of bezels at the top, Xiaomi had to come up with some innovation to place the selfie camera, ear piece and proximity sensor.

Thus, the Mi Mix uses a Cantilever piezoelectric ceramic technology which replaces the traditional ear piece.  The technology utilizes the process tht transmits electric signal from the digital to analog converter to the piezoelectric ceramic which turns the electric signal to mechanical energy which vibrates the phone’s frame and the vibration reaches the ear through the screen.

Although the piezoelectric ceramic technology is an innovative one, user experience hasn’t been all that positive and Xiaomi is likely to replace it. There are indications that the Xiaomi MI MIX 2 which is expected to launch this year will bring a different innovation in its ear piece sound aspect. This was said to have been disclosed by industry analyst Sun Changxu on WeChat recently. According to the lady tech analyst, Xiaomi will partner with AAC technologies who will develop a better new generation technology known as AAC actuator which would be used for the ear piece sound output. The AAC actuator is said to achieve a better screen sound especially at low frequency. It also works better with the 3GPP standard.

Ever since Xiaomi hinted that the next generation Mi Mix 2 would still be designed by acclaimed French designer – Philippe Starck, we have been inundated with fan-generated concept renders of the device which gives an idea of some of the features the Mi Mix 2 would come with.

Some of the concept renders are based on rumored features of the upcoming device. As always, the final product may end up not having the same design as the concept renders but apart from the fact that they are a delight to behold, some of the features on the concepts may find their way into the actual device.

A new concept video render of the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 has appeared online, putting on display some innovative features of the Mix 2. Already, the Mi Mix 2 is rumored as coming with a 93% screen-to-body ratio and that is well-represented in the video. But perhaps, the latest feature we are seeing in a Mi Mix 2 render is the 12MP front camera which slides in and out of the back of the device. This is likely due to the high screen-to-body ratio with little bezels at the top for the camera module to be located there.  It is unclear whether Xiaomi would adopt such innovation considering it doesn’t look too feasible.

The Mi Mix 2 is rumored to come with a dual rear camera setup but this render doesn’t capture that. Instead, there is a single rear camera just like on the Mi Mix with the rear fingerprint sensor sitting just under the camera. The LED flash is by the side of the camera.
