Google Pixel 8 series finally gets support for display output via USB-C

Pixel devices have lacked the support for display output via USB-C for years. Now with the Android 14 QPR3 Beta 2 update, Google has finally enabled DisplayPort Alternate Mode on the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. It enables you to cast your phone’s display on a bigger screen.

Although most of the Pixel devices from the past have offered USB-C 3.1 or above (the hardware requirement to transmit video via the USB-C port) Google has kept the feature disabled up until this point. Back in October last year it was possible to use the feature on Pixel 8 through projects like GrapheneOS. Now Google has finally baked the feature to a stage where you don’t need to modify the system to use DisplayPort Alternate Mode.

When you connect your Pixel 8 or Pixel 8 Pro to an external display, a prompt should pop up asking whether you’d like to mirror to an external display. if you go ahead, the contents of your smartphone screen appear in the middle of the monitor with the wallpaper filling the rest. Reportedly, a revamped “Desktop Mode” interface is under development and is currently hidden behind flags. Meanwhile, older Pixel devices can still enable and use this DisplayPort feature through Magisk module. The process involves installing Magisk Manager, downloading the DisplayPort Magisk Module, and flashing it via the tool. You reboot the phone and you should be good to go.

Notably, Samsung devices with the required hardware have had this feature since 2017. It is called Samsung DeX and offers a more desktop-like interface. Besides the use of USB-C, Samsung has even managed to transmit the data wirelessly, making it even more appealing to one who needs it. Android’s built-in desktop mode has reportedly been under development since Android 10. When or whether Google will offer an equivalent still remains a question.

POCO F6 could be launched soon

In recent days, there has been a flurry of rumors surrounding the much-anticipated POCO F6, with leaked specifications shedding light on the potential improvements over its predecessor, the POCO F5. The GSMChina team has managed to uncover some key details about the device, including the use of Qualcomm’s powerful SM8635 SOC.

POCO F6 coming soon

POCO F5 boasted a Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 SOC, essentially a refurbished SM8475, which was a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1. Renowned for delivering an exceptional gaming experience and enhanced imaging capabilities, the SM8475 left users impressed. Now, the POCO F6 is expected to take a step further by incorporating the yet-to-be-officially-announced SM8635 SOC. The official unveiling of the SM8635 is anticipated on March 18, and POCO F6 series is expected to launch in April.

Leaked information indicates that POCO F6 has made its mark in the IMEI Database, unveiling model numbers “24069PC21G” for the global version and “24069PC21I” for the Indian version. Notably, the POCO F6 is expected to be available in various regions, excluding Japan. An interesting twist lies in the expectation that Redmi Note 13 Turbo will precede POCO F6’s release, set to be introduced in the Chinese market with the model number “24069RA21C“. POCO F6 is speculated to be a rebranded version of the Redmi Note 13 Turbo.

Furthermore, the codename for the POCO F6 has been revealed as “Peridot.” Drawing inspiration from the yellow ruby, also known as Zebercet, Peridot is a type of olivine mineral with the intriguing alternative name of “snake stone.” This codenaming tradition aligns with Redmi Note series devices, which are typically named after gemstones.

While expectations are mounting for POCO F6 to be officially unveiled in April, it’s worth noting that these launch dates are not official information, but estimates provided by industry insiders. As March progresses, Redmi Note 13 Turbo is expected to make its debut, setting the stage for the unveiling of POCO F6.

Volvo Could Solve The Biggest Problem with EVs without You Having to Pay Even $1

The popularity of electric vehicles is surging, with a noticeable increase in EVs on the roads today. However, this growth creates some challenges. Not enough charging stations and slow charging times, compared to filling up with gas, can cause long lines at charging stations.

While manufacturers are developing fast charging technologies to address this issue, the problem persists due to both higher costs and a lack of widespread solutions. Fortunately, Volvo and Breathe are collaborating to accelerate electric vehicle charging, offering a promising step forward. Here are the details…

Volvo Teams Up with Breathe for Faster Charging Technology

While brands like Tesla and BYD often dominate conversations about electric vehicles, the market is highly competitive. Traditional automakers like Volvo, with a rich history dating back to 1927, are now major players in the EV market. However, as I mentioned above, one big problem with electric cars is that they take a long time to charge. To fix this, Volvo is teaming up with a British company called Breathe Battery Technologies.

Volvo and Breathe are collaborating on new battery management technology. This technology could charge Volvo’s electric vehicles up to 30% faster than current models. Charging times may be reduced by 15-30%. Best of all, Breathe’s technology works with Volvo’s existing electric vehicles without needing hardware changes. This also means that the cost shouldn’t increase much, if at all.

Who knows, maybe Volvo could even add this battery technology to existing EVs on the road. Imagine if your two-year-old car could suddenly charge 30% faster with just a small upgrade! After that kind of experience, wouldn’t you be more likely to buy your next car from Volvo? Of course, this is just speculation for now we’ll have to wait and see what Volvo decides.

Let’s say you aren’t that into EV technology, and this news hasn’t caught your interest. But maybe this statement from Ann-Sofie Ekberg at Volvo will change your mind. According to her, Volvo doesn’t want to keep this technology all to themselves. This means other car brands could use Breathe’s battery management too. And because it works with very low power, we might even see it in your smartphones, tablets, and laptops someday.

Both Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 and Dimensity 9400 scored higher than Apple A18 Pro in Geekbench multi-core test

As we are approaching the release date of the iPhone 16 series, Apple’s A18 Pro chip, that will power the iPhone 16 series is also entering the discussion. Previously it was reported that the A18 Pro offers significantly improved single-core performance. Now tipster @negativeonehero on X now reports that the multi-core performance of Apple’s upcoming A18 Pro comes with only a 10% improvement, which is reportedly inferior as compared to two of the next generation Android flagships – the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 and Dimensity 9400.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 and Dimensity 9400 outperformed the A18 Pro by more than 2000 points in multi-core

According to @negativeonehero, the A18 Pro scored around 8200 in Geekbench multi-core test. In comparison, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 and the Dimensity 9400 scored 10628 and an even higher 11739 points respectively. While scores vary slightly each time you test, this is still a significant difference to neglect and may actually enable the next generation of Android flagships to have a higher peak performance capability as compared to the iPhone 16 Pro models.

Speaking of the single core scores, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 achieves a whopping 3500 points in single-core, which is, again, slightly higher than the 3,300 of the A18 Pro. As compared to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, which reaches around 2200 points in Geekbench single-core, the 3500 figure (or even the 2845 shown in the image), if true, will be a significant improvement in performance. The Dimensity 9400 also offers a nearly 20% improvement in both single and multi-core scores as compared to the Dimensity 9300.

However, all of the chips we are talking about are under development at this point and will be released towards the end of 2024. There’s still ample time for Apple, Qualcomm, and MediaTek to make adjustments. Notably, industry experts believe that Apple has intentionally restricted the performance in multi-core operations prioritizing battery life.

Samsung might soon launch a rectangular Galaxy Watch: Report

Samsung has long favored circular designs for its Galaxy Watch series, but that might change soon. According to a report from SamMobile, Samsung might change its status quo and launch a rectangular Galaxy Watch.

Samsung rectangular Watch
Samsung Galaxy Gear. Image: Wikipedia

For those unaware, Samsung’s journey into smartwatches initially began with rectangular designs. In 2013, the company launched the Galaxy Gear smartwatch with a 1.6-inch rectangular display.

The company then followed it with a Gear 2 and Gear Live which also maintained this form factor. However, in recent years, Samsung shifted its focus to round smartwatches and has been refining the design over time.

But if the new report is anything to go by, there might soon be a return of rectangular shapes for Samsung’s smartwatches. SamMobile’s report says the “ idea is enthusiastically being considered internally and it’s very much on the cards that the switch is going to happen.”

Yet, it is still uncertain whether this change will debut in the upcoming Galaxy Watch 7 or the generations after that. Implementing such a significant change would undoubtedly require time for optimization across both hardware and software.

While your personal preferences may lean toward either rectangular or circular designs, a rectangular display in a smartwatch offers practical benefits over its circular counterpart.

Unlike circular screens that often crop content at the edges, a rectangular display offers more usable screen real estate. That means you can see and interact with notifications in a better way, and it’s also easier to navigate with other UI elements.

Apple, which is possibly Samsung’s main competitor in the wearable space, has achieved success with this approach in its widely popular Apple Watch lineup.

“Cheetah X1” chip teased for Infinix Note 40 series ahead of March 18 launch

Infinix is launching the Note 40 series globally on March 18 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The lineup will consist of four new devices — the Note 40, Note 40 Pro, Note 40 Pro 5G, and Note 40 Pro Plus 5G.

Leading up to the launch, the company has now started teasing the features of the Note 40 series on its social media channels.

The company’s latest teaser on X/Twitter reveals that the Note 40 series smartphones will feature an in-house Cheetah X1 chip.

The X1 is essentially a power management chip that forms the foundation of the new All-Round FastCharge 2.0 technology in the Note 40 series. However, the company has yet to share full details of its new charging technology.

Infinix Note 40 Series Specifications (Rumored)

But it is confirmed that the Infinix Note 40 Pro Plus will be the company’s fastest-charging phone yet. A leak last week revealed that the smartphone will have at least 100W fast wired charging support.

While Infinix has previously demoed charging technology of up to 260W, none of the company’s launched phones have reached the three-digit charging figure. So the Note 40 series will have the fastest charging support in Infinix smartphones thus far.

Additionally, the Note 40 Pro Plus 5G is also rumored to feature new MagCharge wireless charging support. Yes, it’s like the MagSage charging for iPhones if you’re guessing.

As for the other devices in the series, the Note 40 is rumored to be powered by the MediaTek Helio G91 chipset and will feature a 5000mAh battery. Meanwhile, the Pro variant is said to feature the Helio G99 chipset and will also come with a 5000mAh battery.

Earlier this week, the Note 40 Pro 5G appeared in a Google Play Console listing, revealing details such as a Full HD+ display, a Dimensity 7020 chipset, 8GB of RAM, and Android 14.
