Smartphones Banned from Schools in Bid to Improve Learning

Smartphone addiction is a major problem in our society. Many of us are constantly checking our phones, even when we should be focusing on other things. This is especially true for children and teenagers, who are often more interested in their phones than their schoolwork. The Dutch government is taking steps to address this problem. Starting in January 2024, smartphones, tablets, and smartwatches will be largely banned from classrooms in the Netherlands. This is a positive step that will help students focus on their studies and learn more effectively.

Dutch Government Takes Steps to Protect Students from Smartphones

The Dutch government has announced that smartphones, tablets, and smartwatches will be largely banned from classrooms in the Netherlands from January 1, 2024. The ban is the result of an agreement between the ministry, schools, and related organizations. Education minister Robbert Dijkgraaf said in a statement that the ban is necessary to protect students from distractions and to help them focus on their studies. “Mobile phones are a disturbance, scientific research shows,” he said. “We need to protect students against this.”

Smartphones ban in Netherlands

The ban will only apply to smartphones that are not specifically needed for lessons. For example, smartphones can still be used for lessons on digital skills, or by students with medical conditions or disabilities. Schools will be responsible for enforcing the ban. However, if the ban does not yield enough results by the summer of 2024, legal rules will follow.

The rule banning phones in Dutch schools may be new, but it’s already common in many other parts of the world. When I was in high school, phones were also prohibited where I lived. And since then, the use of phones and social media has only increased. According to Common Sense Media, the average teenager now spends about 7 hours and 22 minutes on their phone every day. That includes time spent on social media, texting, gaming, watching videos, and using apps. The CDC recommends that children and adolescents aged 5-17 limit their screen time to 2 hours per day.

OnePlus Fold’s actual name might not sound very chic

A OnePlus foldable has been long overdue, especially now that every other Android brand has launched one. It seems we’ll be getting the OnePlus folding phone in August. But there haven’t been many leaks related to the device, leaving everything to assumptions, including its actual name. Some say it will be called the OnePlus Fold, while others christen it OnePlus V Fold. Now, a popular tipster suggests that OnePlus is going to throw us a curveball by calling the phone something out of the ordinary.

“OnePlus Open” sounds more like a magic spell

Max Jambor says OnePlus is taking a different approach to the name of its first foldable phone. Instead of calling it the OnePlus Fold, the company is apparently going with the name OnePlus Open. This is an unusual choice, but it could be a way for OnePlus to differentiate its foldable phone from the competition. If you don’t like the name, you’ll be relieved to know that the company also considered other names, such as OnePlus Wing, OnePlus Edge, OnePlus Prime, and OnePlus Peak (you read that right).

OnePlus Open

Although the moniker may not sound very chic, it’s still better than the conventional “Fold” and “Flip” names. A recent report revealed OnePlus could launch its first foldable sometime before or on August 19.

Rumors suggest the foldable will get an 8-inch QHD+ foldable OLED primary display along with a 6.5-inch FHD+ OLED secondary panel. It wouldn’t be unwise to assume the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC on the device. There are also reports that the foldable could be a rebranded Oppo Find N3, which should remain exclusive to the Chinese market. The OnePlus foldable is also said to support wireless charging.

Peugeot Cycles launches three new e-bikes designed for urban transit

The two-wheeler arm of Stelantis brand Peugeot has unveiled three new urban-focused e-bikes to accommodate varied interests. Each of the three new Peugeot Cycles models is designed to meet the needs of city dwellers of different hues and pockets. They are worthwhile options for those seeking to make the transition to two-wheeled sustainable mobility.

Peugeot Cycles

Electric bicycles continue to catch the fancy of a growing segment of both the urban and rural population in many countries. These urban mobility solutions have become very popular in parts of Europe and Asia, as well as a growing presence in the US. It is reported that more than 5.5 million e-bikes were sold in Europe alone last year, reflecting an 8.6 percent growth.

The electric bicycle industry in Europe has become the gold standard for measuring safety compliance in other markets. This has seen an influx of manufacturers into the European market, while also spreading to other markets.

Peugeot Cycles e-bike

Peugeot Cycles boasts a long record of performance in the two-wheeler industry. The bicycle subsidiary of French automaker Peugeot has been manufacturing bicycles since 1885. It has continued to catch the fancy of a large segment of the cycling public and its latest offerings expand this position.

The three new electric bicycles are targeted at urban dwellers who want to remain mobile at any time. The new e-bikes come with several tech features and can be paired with Peugeot’s proprietary smartphone app. This allows users to configure the settings of their bikes to suit their immediate needs.

Peugeot cargo bike

The Peugeot Digital E-Bike comes with an angular, boxy, and step-through frame. This gives the e-bike a unique utilitarian design, complemented by sleek handlebars and a prominent back sweep. This enables the rider to have a comfortable, upright seating position while on the go. It features a mid-drive motor connected to a low-maintenance belt-drive system.

The Peugeot Digital e-Longtail is a long-tail cargo e-bike. This offers extra carrying capacity for commuters but it retains the agility and nimbleness of a commuter e-bike. It has a long wheelbase for added stability and it can accommodate two kids aside from the extra cargo. The Peugeot Digital e-Front Load is a full-blown cargo e-bike. Peugeot Cycles says it is ideal for both family and business use, as it can take up to three kids aside from the cargo. The Digital e-Front Load uses a mid-drive motor connected to a chain drive system.

Peugeot Cycles is silent on the release and availability details of the new e-bikes. It is however expected that these models will enter the European market before possibly spreading to other regions. Pricing details for the e-bikes are also lacking at this time.

Instagram Threads to soon add basic features like Search, Hashtags, Following Feed

Elon Musk’s draconian policies on Twitter made the platform limiting for users, which gave rivals like Meta an opportunity to launch an alternative. Threads by Instagram is the latest attempt to challenge Twitter’s Dominance, and unlike previous attempts such as Truth Social and Koo, it is gaining traction with users. However, Threads is not without its flaws. The platform lacks some basic features like search, hashtags, and a following feed. Meta has said that it plans to add these features in the near future.

New features could make Threads a worthy Twitter rival

Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, said that the team behind Threads is working to add the missing basic features to the platform. These features include search, hashtags, a following feed, graph syncing, and diverse support. Mosseri also said that messaging may be enabled soon, but he did not give a specific timeline.

Instagram-Threads-App

The platform has been criticized for its lack of features, and these additions will make it more competitive with other social media platforms, especially Twitter. It is worth noting that Threads has received a solid headstart. The platform has already surpassed 30 million signups, and it was the top free app in Apple’s App Store as of Thursday morning. However, it remains to be seen whether Threads will be able to maintain its momentum.

Threads’ tight integration with Instagram has been a major factor in its success. Users can simply link their Instagram account to Threads, and they’ll be able to start sharing content with their friends and followers right away. This makes it easy for people to get started with Threads, and it also helps to retain users who are already on Instagram.

Gizmochina is now on Threads! Follow us to stay in touch and get the latest news from the tech world.

Samsung Health Beta App Suggests That The Brand May Potentially Launch Galaxy Ring

Back in 2015, Samsung filed a patent for a smart ring. This was years ago and now a new leak has reignited the topic. The South Korean brand trademarked for various smart ring monikers like Galaxy Ring earlier this year along with applying Samsung Circle, Samsung Index, and Samsung Insight monikers this week. The company might be working on a smart ring after all. Read on to know more below.

Samsung Health beta app reveals Galaxy Ring support

Earlier today, Samsung released a new beta version of the Health app. A Reddit user spotted ‘Ring Support’ in the Feature list on the app. However, the app does not reveal any additional details. But the listing and Samsung’s Galaxy Ring trademark does suggest that the company might introduce a smart ring in the future. If the brand does not launch its own smart ring, the Ring support mentioned in the Health beta app could indicate compatibility for smart rings made by other brands like Oura.

The so-called Galaxy Ring could come with health-tracking features similar to the Galaxy Watch series. The Galaxy Ring trademark at the Korea Intellectual Property Rights Information Service (KIPRIS) classified it as a smart device for measuring health indicators and/or sleep in the form of a ring.

This is not the first time we are learning about Samsung working on a smart ring. A patent application from 2015 revealed that Samsung’s smart ring could be used to control smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, and smart home devices along with offering better health-tracking results. We will have to wait and see about the South Korean brand’s plans to launch its first smart ring.

Buniac said that Motorola aims to double its volumes in India within this year and increase them by four times by 2026. In order to achieve these growth goals, Motorola is making significant investments in research and development in several countries, including India.

“We’ve seen our sales double compared to last year calendar year, in the online space. This year calendar we are doubled in terms of in terms of sell-out. And in terms of sell-ins, we’ve seen a 57% of the same calendar year, at a premium to the market which means a 43% growth for us, since the industry declined,” he said.

However, Motorola’s operations in India are quite challenging, particularly due to the presence of Chinese smartphone manufacturers, who pose a significant threat by holding almost a 70% market share. As you may know, companies like Xiaomi and Oppo pay great attention to India, even owning brands specific to the region like Redmi. Consequently, competition in the entry-level and mid-range device segments is incredibly intense. Unfortunately, the premium segment, priced from 30,000 RS and above, isn’t much different and is primarily dominated by Apple, Samsung, and OnePlus.

The company will need to execute its strategy effectively in order to achieve its goals. However, if it succeeds, it could become a major player in the Indian smartphone market.

TSMC anticipates minimal impact from China’s export controls on Rare Metals

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), announced that it does not expect China’s recent export controls on gallium and germanium to directly affect its production. The Chinese Ministry of Commerce and Customs revealed on Monday that starting from August 1, a license would be required for the export of these rare metals due to security concerns related to the ongoing trade dispute with the United States.

TSMC, a crucial supplier for major tech companies like Apple and Intel, expressed confidence that these export restrictions would not have a direct impact on its operations. While the company did not elaborate on potential long-term indirect consequences, it stated that it would closely monitor the situation. TSMC the chip manufacturer with the biggest contracts worldwide, controls over half of the global output of silicon wafers, a vital component in semiconductors used in various applications ranging from consumer electronics to military systems.

The announcement by the Chinese government came as tensions between China and the United States continue to escalate. Beijing’s decision to restrict exports of gallium and germanium, two metals widely used in semiconductors and electric vehicles, is seen as a response to U.S. export restrictions aimed at limiting China’s access to critical technologies used in artificial intelligence.

Despite the geopolitical tensions, TSMC’s Chairman, Mark Liu, sought to allay concerns and highlight the potential role of Taiwan’s chip industry in improving relations between the two superpowers. Liu argued that if Taiwan’s chip industry thrives, it would have a positive impact on geopolitics. He emphasized that both China and the United States understand the indispensability of TSMC’s chips, which could lead to a more cautious approach in their actions. Liu expressed hope that TSMC and Taiwan’s flagship chip industry could contribute to stabilizing the tension between the two global powers.

Taiwan, a significant chip producer, plays a crucial role in the global supply chain, providing chips for smartphones, cars, and even military aircraft. With TSMC at the forefront, the island nation has emerged as a key player in the semiconductor industry. The company’s optimistic outlook regarding the impact of China’s export controls reflects its confidence in its ability to navigate the complex geopolitical landscape while maintaining stable production.
