Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus leak reveals 10% overclocking & 30% rise in energy efficiency

Qualcomm had just announced earlier today (19th May 2022) that it will be holding a new Snapdragon event in China on May 20. In this conference, the company plans on unveiling its next gen flagship mobile chipset, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+. However, prior to this event, a new leak has revealed some interesting details regarding this chipset, so lets have a look.

Qualcomm
Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+

The chipmaking giant’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus (SM8475) is based on a 4nm process. This chipset is will apparently feature an overall boost in performance thanks to a 10 percent overclocking. The processor will still retain the “1+3+4” core cluster architecture, which consists of a Cortex X2, Cortex A710, and the Cortex A510. According to a known Weibo tipster (a Chinese microblogging website), the CPU and GPU of architecture are still the same, but with an improvement of energy efficiency of 30 percent.

Qualcomm

Similarly, its power consumption has also be lowered by 30 percent as well. In other words, along with the 10 percent improvement in performance, this chipset will also have better endurance overall. The tipster added that this is the only official data as of right now, although, the actual performance of the mass produced Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ chip is still unknown. For those unaware, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ will replace the existing Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and will soon be featured in upcoming flagship smartphone models from various brands.

Glitch in Huawei’s AppGallery lets users download paid apps for free

If you follow the tech industry, you’re probably aware that Huawei is in a lot of trouble. The company was subject to a US trade ban in May 2019, which prevented it from working with some of its long-term partners including Google. This means Huawei phones cannot access Google services such as the Play Store. So, the company had to create its own alternative to the Google Play Store called “AppGallery”. However, it is reported that AppGallery is facing a certain glitch that allows users to download paid apps for free.

huawei appgallery

This vulnerability/glitch has been discovered by Dylan Roussel. He found that the API of Huawei’s AppGallery offers no protection for paid applications. It is reportedly possible to obtain a genuine APK download link for premium apps without even having to pay for it.

To make sure that it wasn’t the issue with just one particular app, Russel tried downloading multiple apps and he was successful each time. However, one game he downloaded had a license verification, which he failed to pass.

Russel even emailed Huawei informing them about the issue and offered them 5 weeks to fix it. Now it has been 13 Weeks and the vulnerability still persists. So, he decided to disclose it publicly.

Huawei’s ignorance can have a grave impact on the earnings of developers who have published their apps in Huawei’s AppGallery. Not only that, but this issue also invites app piracy. Attackers could exploit the API to download a huge number of premium apps without even visiting the AppGallery.

If you’re an app developer with a paid app published in Huawei’s AppGallery, it is advisable for you to implement additional means of protection to your application through DRM, like the AppGallery DRM Service.

Samsung is known as the undisputed king of software updates because the company promises to provide 4 years of updates to all the Galaxy smartphones. True to its words, the South Korean tech giant is now reportedly delivering stable Android 12 updates to the two mid-range phones, dubbed Galaxy A22 and Galaxy A41. The new update includes a new UI design, upgraded stock apps, some new functions, and enhanced privacy and security.

The Android 12 update for the Samsung Galaxy A22 and Galaxy A41 smartphones apparently comes with firmware versions A225FXXU3BVD8 and A415FXXU1DVDB, respectively. It is now being rolled out in Russia and is expected to expand to other nations in the coming weeks.

Samsung Galaxy A22

As reported by Sammobile, the Android 12 update for the Galaxy A22 includes a redesigned UI with the Color Palette feature, improved widget designs, more lock screen widgets, and improved Dark Mode. The Galaxy A21 also receives upgraded versions of Samsung’s stock apps, including Bixby, Bixby Routines, Calendar, My Files, Samsung Internet, and Samsung Keyboard. The Camera and Device Care applications have also been tidied up. The update also carries the April 2022 security patch.

The publications revealed that the Android 12 update for the Samsung Galaxy A41 also includes the April 2022 security patch, which is said to address 88 privacy and security flaws.

Samsung has improved the privacy and security of both smartphones by introducing features like Privacy Dashboard, and quick setting toggles to enable or disable camera and microphone access. Moreover, the company has also added privacy indicators for camera and microphone usage.

What’s surprising is that the Galaxy A22 will also receive an Android 13 update at some point next year, however, Android 12 marks the endgame of updates for the Galaxy A41.

If you own the aforementioned Galaxy smartphones and live in Russia, you can download the latest update by going to Settings > Software update > Download and install. Samsung will release the update in more regions in a few weeks.
