Xiaomi Rekindles Its U.S Market With The Mi Electric Scooter & Mi Powerbank Pro

Xiaomi, and indeed almost all Chinese manufacturers, eye the U.S market due to its lucrative outlook. Xiaomi had announced and even rolled out some of its products in the U.S market via Amazon. While that partnership is still on, Xiaomi may have come up with a new strategy that would likely increase the level of awareness regarding its products and thus save the company the huge bill that would have been incurred on running series of advertisement.Xiaomi Logo

Xiaomi calls the program its key opinion leader program and it revolves around two products- the Mi Electric Scooter and Mi Power Bank Pro. The tech giant makes the products available to selected YouTubers who then create a video showcasing the features and real-life performance of the products. The gamble was said to have paid off as the campaign resulted in 15 million social media impressions generated by DJ Paris Hilton, Miss Universe Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters, and fashion blogger Bryan Boy. Now, the Chinese company has taken it a notch higher, partnering with prominent YouTubers such as Wolfie, Wongfu Productions and Austin Evans to lead a new charge. Both products are included in the video created.Xiaomi product USA

The Mi Electric Scooter was released sometime in 2016 with a portable design which allows it to be folded when transporting it. The Scooter is presently on offer at Amazon for $499 which curiously, is cheaper than what you would find on online retailer GearBest presently. On the other hand, the Mi Powerbank pro is on sale on Amazon for $26.26. This model comes with a USB cable having a Type A connector which can be interchanged with a USB 2.0 connector. We are pretty certain this strategy will rake up more sales for Xiaomi and indeed, create some much-needed awareness about Xiaomi ecosystem products. Check out the videos below.

ZTE’s Recent Patent Filling is For Yet Another Smartphone With Two Display Notches

Chinese smartphone maker ZTE may be battling for survival presently as a result of the ban imposed by the U.S authorities but that won’t make us forget that the company is innovative. Here’s one of its innovations even though some will smirk at it. A recent patent application filed by ZTE for a smartphone having dual display notches have just been uncovered. The patent was actually filed on September 13, 2017, with China’s State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO), which is an indication that the Chinese OEM was actually tinkering with the idea of implementing a design with a cut out on the display.ZTE Patent

The notch display design is turning out to be a fan favourite as more and more phone makers are in the process of adopting the design style. Samsung recently filed two patents before China’s SIPO and one of them is of a device with a notch design. In this case, the ZTE model design has two notches, one at the top of the display and another at the bottom. The cut-out at the bottom features a home button and is far wider than the one at the top. The notch at the top is just like that of the Essential Phone, only wide enough to accommodate the front camera. This differentiates this new patent from the dual notches-packing ZTE Iceberg patent which had wider notches both at the top and bottom edges of the display.

No back to reality, ZTE may not release the smartphone anytime soon, considering the sanctions imposed on the company by the United States government. If at all ZTE plans to launch this model, it isn’t expected to release it until mid-2019 at the earliest. For now, it is just a patent that might not see the light of day.

Huawei Reportedly Developing Its Own OS In Case Its Gets U.S Ban

The recent ban imposed by the U.S authorities on ZTE from using American products and services seems to have opened the eyes of Chinese OEMs to the grave dangers inherent in relying on U.S technology. The ban would not only see ZTE not using Qualcomm chips but may lose its license to use Google’s Android operating system for smartphones.Huawei

It was reported recently that Huawei is facing a similar probe relating to possible violation of Iran sanctions. The Chinese smartphone and telecommunications equipment manufacturer has denied any wrongdoing. However, according to several sources, Huawei has commenced developing and perfecting its own mobile OS should the U.S government eventually find the company culpable and wield the sledgehammer. One of the sources disclosed that the Chinese giant started to build its own operating system after the US government commenced an investigation against it and ZTE in 2012.

The mobile phone operating system is dominated by Android OS and Apple’s iOS, with both accounting for 99.9% of the global market, according to an estimate by research firm, Gartner. There have been several attempts to break this duopoly by various tech companies. Microsoft attempted to do this with the Windows Mobile OS but that didn’t fly. Samsung has the Tizen OS which it backs heavily but is actually owned by a consortium of tech companies apart from the Korean giant. In the days of yore, Nokia had the Symbian OS and later MeeGo but all those were later jettisoned.

Read Also: After ZTE’s Ban, U.S. Probing Huawei For Possible Iran Sanctions Violations

The Android ecosystem and iOS have to their advantage, a large number of supported apps, without support for cross-platform applications. In other words, Android apps can’t run on Tizen OS unless the user installs an emulator. This is something that has hindered the growth of Samsung-backed Tizen OS. With the millions of apps available to iOS and Android users, it will likely take years before a new OS would fly because Huawei would need to get developers to develop apps that would be compatible with its OS. Moreso, this would affect the patronage of Huawei’s products in the global market. Who wants a smartphone not running on Android OS except Apple fanboys? However, it is always good to break a monopoly. Who knows, we might just be staring at a revolution in the mobile OS market.

Chinese Phone Shipment Slumps To Its Lowest Level Since 2013

China is the biggest smartphone market globally and it is no coincidence that majority of the top OEMs globally are Chinese companies. The Chinese smartphone market holds lots of potentials but that doesn’t mean it won’t get saturated. In fact, analysts had long warned that the Chinese market would reach its saturation point soon, considering the rate new models are being introduced into the market by OEMs. That long-anticipated growth crunch may have arrived. A research report by Canalys has shown that shipments by Chinese phone makers dropped by 21  across the industry fell by 21 percent year-on-year in Q1 2018.Chinese smartphone shipments Q1 2018

The report hints that the total number of phones shipped in China fell short of the 100 million mark in a quarter and this is the first time the market was witnessing such slump since 2013. Out of the top 10 phone vendors in China, eight were hit by annual declines in shipments with Gionee, Meizu and Samsung shrinking to less than half of their respective Q1 2017 numbers. Only two, Xiaomi and Vivo recorded a Year on Year increase in their shipment volumes.Chinese phone shipment Q1 2018

If you are a fan of Xiaomi, it may interest you to note that the company was able to post a positive momentum despite the slump. Xiaomi’s shipments grew by 37% YoY to reach 12 million. The growth was enough for the brand to climb up to the fourth positive, beating Apple to it. However, the revenue doesn’t reflect that as the sales relied heavily on the Redmi models which are not so profitable. Huawei maintains its lead on the market, according to Canalys and is closely followed by BBK-pair OPPO and Vivo.

Read More: Xiaomi Turned 8 in April: We Pick The Top Smartphones From The Company Till Date!

Interestingly, the top four Chinese smartphone vendors account for a huge 73% of all shipments, which Canalys believes is bad for consumers and smartphone enthusiasts in China. This sort of situation could stifle innovative brands like Meizu, Smartisan, 360 Mobiles, Red Pepper and others out of the market. As for the slump in gross shipment, we don’t believe doomsday is here already but it could be as a result of the low number of phones that were launched by the brands in the first quarter. We expect a rise in shipment in Q2 when a number of models, including flagship models, would be launched.

Meizu 15 Plus vs Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S: Specs Comparison

If we exclude some Huawei devices, Chinese flagship smartphones are always way cheaper than the other handsets from mainstream brands like Samsung and Apple. Meizu 15 Plus and Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S are the emblems of this category of mobile devices and they can offer impressive specs without making your wallets empty. If you are looking for a refined high-end device these two models are surely among the best choices, but which is the very best one for your particular need? Let’s find it out with a Meizu 15 Plus vs Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S specs comparison highlighting strong and weak points of each handset.

While both Meizu 15 Plus and Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S offer original and premium aesthetics (and it is not easy to find such beautiful Chinese devices), the first important gap between these handsets can be found in the displays. Meizu 15 Plus has a definitely better panel with a Quad HD resolution providing a higher level of detail and the Super AMOLED technology which has more brilliant colors and deeper blacks.

When it comes to hardware, Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S is the winner. With its Snapdragon 845 chipset, up to 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal storage in the most expensive version, the latest Xiaomi flagship has the best hardware profile you can expect from a mobile device in 2018. This obviously results in outstanding performance in every kind of use. Cameras should be pretty much comparable: both the handsets feature a great dual cam setup. Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S is able to capture incredibly detailed photos in every environment and it is currently in the top 10 best camera phones ranking by DxOMark (Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S review here!).

We will be able to tell you more about the Meizu 15 Plus when we will test its camera thoroughly but that’ll take some time as it has just been announced. Considering that it includes the Sony IMX380 sensor from Huawei P20 (the best camera phone alongside P20 Pro) and an amazing 20 MP selfie camera, it should deliver good performance. There is just 100 mAh of difference between the battery, but Xiaomi Mi Max 2S may last more (it reaches the end of a working day with 20-25% of remaining charge) due to its efficient components.

Go for the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S if you are looking for the best design (metal frame + ceramic back) and performance, while if you want a device which is more comfortable to use and provides an outstanding multimedia experience (and you also want to save some money), choose Meizu 15 Plus.

Oppo A3 Is Official: A Cheaper R15 With Helio P60 and Ultra-Narrow Bezels

If you thought Oppo R15 and R15 Plus would be the only upper-midrange smartphones from the company in 1H 2018, then you have been proved wrong. Oppo A3 has just been made official and you can consider it a sort of affordable version of the R15. Indeed, its specs sheet is not so different from the latest Oppo release, and neither is its design. The handset comes with an incredibly high screen-to-body ratio and ultra-narrow bezels on each side.

oppo a3

There is a chin, but it is very thin, and there is also a small notch on the upper part of the front panel which contains the earpiece and the front camera. Oppo A3 measures 156 x 75.3 x 7.8 mm and weighs 159 grams. It has a back with a diamond-like texture. The back cover seems to be made of glass, while the frame is made of aluminum. The display has a size of 6.2 inches with 19:9 aspect ratio and a Full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2280 pixels. On the hardware side, the mid-ranger has an octa-core Helio P60 chipset, which is the most powerful SoC unleashed by MediaTek in 2018.

The device also comes with a satisfying amount of RAM (4 GB) and a massive internal storage of 128 GB. With Oppo A3, you won’t get a dual camera setup, but there is still a decent 16 MP main camera with a bright f/1.8 aperture. The front snapper has a resolution of 8 MP and a f/2.2 aperture. The camera department is surely the biggest disadvantage of the A3 over its older sibling, the R15. The operating system installed is Android 8.1 Oreo customized with Color OS in the 5.0 version. Oppo A3 has been launched in the Chinese market in four hues: Black, Silver, Pink and Red, with a price tag of CNY 2,099 which roughly translates into $332/€374.

Alibaba’s Jack Ma Urges China, Japan & Others to Develop Local Chip Industry to Stop Reliance on U.S Companies

Alibaba’s co-founder Jack Ma has made a case for nations around the world including China, Japan and others to develop their own semiconductor technology in order to whittle down the U.S’ stronghold on the global chip market. The Chinese billionaire and entrepreneur made this call while speaking to students at the Waseda University in Tokyo, Bloomberg reports.AliBaba

According to Jack Ma, 100 percent of the market for chips is controlled by Americans and this was as a result of the fact that they were the early movers. He also raised a fear that only brings to mind ZTE‘s recent ban by the U.S government. The Alibaba co-found wondered what would happen if the U.S chipmakers decided to stop selling. Jack Ma also elaborated on his company’s growing interest in chips which saw the e-commerce giant acquire local design-house Hangzhou C-Sky Microsystems Co. The Alibaba CEO  said he’s motivated in part by a desire to make chips that would be cheap, efficient and available to all. He said his company has invested in five semiconductor firms in the past four years.

The view expressed by Ma is similar to those expressed in the recent past by Chinese business chieftains and politicians alike. Fellow Chinese internet company Tencent Holdings’ founder Pony Ma is also envisaging a world-class domestic chip industry as tensions rise with the U.S., the global leader in cutting-edge semiconductor technology.

The action taken against ZTE may have kickstarted a revolution which could see the Chinese semiconductor industry becoming independent and viable. The feud is at the heart of Beijing’s existing plan to shell out some $150 billion over 10 years to achieve a leading position in chip design and manufacturing. In the long run, U.S companies such as Qualcomm, Broadcom, Intel and others will be the biggest losers, considering the important place Chinese companies sit in their supply chain.

Xiaomi Temporarily Halts MIUI 9 Updates, MIUI 10 Expected Soon?

Xiaomi has announced that it is suspending MIUI 9 Beta ROM updates after April 27  and would instead focus on optimisation from then on until June. The company first unveiled MIUI 9 custom ROM in July last year and since then there have been regular updates which include closed beta (releases every Tuesday) and public beta (releases every Friday). But now, an admin on the MIUI forum has informed fans that the MIUI team will release the last Development/Alpha ROM 8.4.26 and then there will be no update for a couple of weeks in order to achieve better system stability and optimisation.MIUI 10

This also affects the MIUI Global Beta ROMs as well but just for a week. From the look of things, it has more to do with allowing more time for optimisation than because of the upcoming MIUI 10. In another light, it could be that the company is planning to commence the Closed Beta programme for the MIUI 10, hence the suspension of MIUI 9 update. Xiaomi announced it had started working on MIUI 10 custom ROM in January this year. Since then, no official announcement has been made regarding its rollout itinerary. But we believe the tech giant has something in the works and it is believed to be based on Android Oreo. So, it has got to be fast about it since Android Oreo will soon get a successor.

Nokia X/X6 Hands-on Photos Reveal Appear; Release Date Could be May 16

HMD Global is yet another company that has been inspired by iPhone X’s design.
