Oppo F7 Caught Cheating on AnTuTu Benchmark

Benchmarks are not everything in order to evaluate the overall performance of a smartphone, but they represent a basic picture of how a smartphone behaves when it is under load. Well, not in the case of Oppo F7, which has just been caught cheating on benchmarks. According to a blogger from Vietnam, the handset intentionally boosts its performances pushing the limits when the user runs the AnTuTu app.

The blogger has scripted a fake AnTuTu app to prove it: when he ran the app, Oppo F7 has boosted each of the cores in its MediaTek Helio P60 SoC to their max clock frequency (2 GHz) with no regard for thermal thresholds. Thanks to this trick, the device has obtained awesome scores on AnTuTu, beating some of its most important rivals in the same segment.

Oppo F7 has scored 139,475 points and it has totally neutralized Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus with Snapdragon 625, Redmi Note 5 Pro with Snapdragon 636 and even Xiaomi Mi 6X which is powered by the best Qualcomm’s midrange SoC: the octa-core Snapdragon 660. LG K30: New Entry-Level Phone With 32 GB ROM Spotted On T-Mobile’s Website

What Evan Blass revealed almost three months ago has finally come to pass: a new LG entry-level smartphone is making its way to T-Mobile in the US. Right after LG G7’s announcement, the handset has been spotted on a support page of the known U.S. carrier, meaning that the launch should be near. From the specs and renders surfaced, we can easily understand that it will carry a very affordable price tag. The handset has appeared with a full metal unibody design in Black color.

It has pretty thick bezels and a fingerprint reader on the rear side which doubles as a power key. So there is only a volume rocker on the side of the phone. LG K30 has a 5.3-inch display with the classic 16:9 aspect ratio. The resolution is not mentioned but we believe it will either be HD or even lower than 720p. Among the internal components, there is a quad-core chipset running at a max frequency of 1.4 GHz. The name of the SoC is not mentioned in the specs sheet, but judging from the clock frequency and basing on the latest devices released by LG, we should be talking about Qualcomm Snapdragon 425.

The SoC is supported by 2 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage which is possible to expand with a micro SD up to 2 TB. LG K30 has a single rear camera with a resolution of 13 MP and a front snapper with a 5 MP resolution. On the connectivity side, it supports Wi-Fi N, Wi-Fi Calling 2.0, NFC, Bluetooth 4.2 and VoLTE. The battery has a capacity of 2880 mAh (which will be enough for a long battery life in every scenario if well-optimized) and it can be charged through a USB-C port. According to the listing, the battery will be able to last up to 13 hours on a single charge. The device still runs Nougat.

Honor 10 Will Be A Flipkart Exclusive & May Sell For INR 35,000

The Honor 10 was announced in China a few weeks ago. The flagship from Huawei’s sub-brand will be making its way to other regions such as India and the UK.

Honor 10 Aurora

Although Honor has not announced a launch date for India, it has revealed details about availability.

According to the VP Sales of Huawei India Consumer Business Group, P Sanjeev, Flipkart will be their exclusive online sale partner for the Honor 10.

With respect to price, Mysmartprice says the new flagship may be priced around Rs. 35.000 (~$525). In China, the phone sells for ¥2599 (~$408) for the 64GB variant and ¥2999 (~471) for the 128GB variant. So our guess is that the Rs. 35,000 price may be for the 128GB model.

A leaked poster refers to the Honor 10 as the OnePlus killer, if it wants to live up to that expectation, then it will have to sell at a very competitive price.

The Honor 10’s selling point is its camera performance which has been bolstered by AI features. It has a 24MP selfie camera and a 24MP + 12MP dual camera combo on the rear.

Xiaomi Mi 6X vs Redmi Note 5 (China) Camera Shootout: Does Mi 6X Feature A Better Camera?

There are two important smartphones in the lower mid-range segment from Xiaomi in China right now, the Redmi Note 5 and the Xiaomi Mi 6X. Despite being from different lineups, their pricing is very similar. This means that if you are out to buy a brand new Xiaomi smartphone under 2000 Yuan (~$315), then you have to decide between these two handsets (there are more options if you look at older discounted models, but we are not going to focus on them right now).

xiaomi-mi-6x-vs-redmi-note-5-pro-front
xiaomi-mi-6x-vs-redmi-note-5-pro-front

Both are quite different from each other in terms of performance and features, which makes it even harder to decide between the two. Do you go for the performance of the SD660 over SD636 or is camera your ultimate priority or is battery life your most important concern? We try to make your lives a little easier in this article.

Since camera is one of the most important areas in a smartphone, we decided to pit the Xiaomi Mi 6X vs Redmi Note 5 (China) for a camera shootout. In this article, we will compare samples from different scenarios and see how both of them performed using their stock settings.

So let’s get on with the Xiaomi Mi 6X vs Redmi Note 5 (China) Camera Shootout!

Before we start comparing the two samples side by side, I have to add that the results were not exactly what I was expecting. Sometimes the Mi 6X did well while there were other times when the Redmi Note 5 did well. In general, both had similar results in daytime. As for the low light pictures, it’s a totally different story. It will all depend on how you like your low light samples. Just read on and you’ll know what I’m talking about.

Xiaomi Mi 6X vs Redmi Note 5: Daylight Performance

Under good lighting conditions, both the phones managed to do well. The results were quite similar, with the Mi 6X’s sample featuring better saturation and slightly better details.

For example, let’s take a look at the image of the red flower below.

[twenty20 img1=”188766″ img2=”188774″ offset=”0.5″]

The Mi 6X has better colors and slightly better details too. But in general, both the photos look quite similar. So, you won’t get any significant improvement in the day light images from the Mi 6X.

Mi 6X vs RN5 Red Flower 150 pc crop
Mi 6X vs RN5 Red Flower 150% zoom

As you can see in the zoomed in sample, the Mi 6X has managed to capture slightly better details of the anthers of the flower.

Xiaomi Mi 6X vs Redmi Note 5: Portrait Mode

Once again, both the phones manage to capture pretty good portraits. It’s not surprising since the algorithms are the same for taking portrait shots. Even the amount of details captured are quite similar. So there are no significant differences in their quality.

[twenty20 img1=”188767″ img2=”188775″ offset=”0.5″]

Xiaomi Mi 6X vs Redmi Note 5: Selfies

On paper, the Mi 6X has a definite advantage over the RN5 on the front camera end. The former features a 20MP sensor while the latter has a smaller 13MP shooter. In real life, quality difference does exist in selfies with the Mi 6X capturing better saturated samples.

You can see the difference down in the samples below where Shine Wong is testing his selfie skills!

[twenty20 img1=”189363″ img2=”189365″ offset=”0.5″]

Xiaomi Mi 6X vs Redmi Note 5: Outdoor Dull Lighting

Xiaomi Mi 6X seems to have captured slightly better details and lesser noise when the lighting was dull. Even the colors are better on the Mi 6X.

[twenty20 img1=”188765″ img2=”188773″ offset=”0.5″]

For example, take a look at the samples above. The tree on the bottom right corner is definitely greener than the one seen on the RN5 sample. Also, there’s very little noise in the dark areas as compared to the RN5. Here, we can say that the Mi 6X was slightly better than the Redmi model.

Mi 6X vs RN5 Dull Light 100 pc zoom
Mi 6X vs RN5 Dull Light 100% zoom

Xiaomi Mi 6X vs Redmi Note 5: Artificial Light Sample

Indoors, under artificial lights, the Xiaomi Mi 6X manages to capture better colors. The level of details on the Mi 6X were also slightly better, but in some cases, you might find the Redmi Note 5 capturing better details in the sample.

[twenty20 img1=”188770″ img2=”188778″ offset=”0.5″]

For example, in the sample above, the colors are better on the Mi 6X’s sample. However, when you zoom in, you can see that the spots on the dragon fruit were better captured on the Redmi Note 5’s sample. Still the Mi 6X’s sample looks better in general.

Xiaomi Mi 6X vs Redmi Note 5: Super Low Light Sample

When the lighting goes down, the Xiaomi Mi 6X captures brighter photos, with better colors, and details. However, it does come at a cost. Check out the sample below.

[twenty20 img1=”188769″ img2=”188777″ offset=”0.5″]

The book shelf sample from the Xiaomi Mi 6X looks better in terms of colors and brightness, however, it’s evident that there’s a lot of noise in the sample. In comparison, the Redmi Note 5 is darker and the details are lost. Despite the noise, Mi 6X’s sample looks better.

The higher noise is likely because the Xiaomi Mi 6X takes the ISO up to 9600 as compared to 6400 ISO on the RN5.

Xiaomi Mi 6X vs Redmi Note 5: Night Photography

When it comes to the night time photography, once again, noise is evident in Mi 6X’s samples. Look at the samples below.

[twenty20 img1=”188768″ img2=”188776″ offset=”0.5″]

The Mi 6X managed to over expose the buildings in the background to make sure the parking lot was brighter. But this makes the picture quite noisy. Just zoom into the image and you’ll see the high concentration of noise. The Redmi note 5 isn’t quite better,  being darker than the Mi 6X but there’s less noise and slightly better details. Personally, I’d pick the Redmi Note 5’s sample here!

Xiaomi Mi 6X vs Redmi Note 5 Camera Shootout: Conclusion

In short, the better camera hardware on the Xiaomi Mi 6X hasn’t been put to good use. It’s not significantly better than the Redmi Note 5’s 12+5MP camera setup and even in low light situations, where the Mi 6X should have done better, the samples were plagued with noise.

xiaomi-mi-6x-vs-redmi-note-5-pro-back.jpg
xiaomi-mi-6x-vs-redmi-note-5-pro-back

Overall, I would say I’m quite disappointed with Xiaomi’s work on the Mi 6X’s camera for low light photography. If the company manages to limit the noise in the low light samples, things would shift in favour of the Mi 6X. Otherwise, with noisy low light pictures, I’m sure many users would be leaning towards the Redmi Note 5 model for its larger battery and a dedicated headphone jack.

What are your thoughts? Are you okay with the amount of noise in each of the Mi 6X’s low light samples?

Global Tablet Shipments For Q2 2018 Expected To Hit New Quarterly Low – Report

The tablet market is expected to continue its downward spiral in the second quarter of 2018, DigiTimes speculates. As at the end of the fourth quarter of the year, the tablet market had declined year-over-year for 13 quarters straight. In Q4 2017, the shipment dropped by 7.9 percent year-over-year with an estimated 49.6 million units shipped worldwide, compared to 53.8 million units in the same quarter last year.

Xiaomi MiPad

The decline continued in Q1 2018 where the global tablet shipments hit a new quarterly low of 33 million units.  Shipments fell 28.2% sequentially and 14.9% year-on-year. This is due partly to insufficient stimulation from the non-Apple tablets during the traditional off season and partly to white-box makers’ clients adjusting inventory. This fall is expected to go down further to a new low of 31.06 million units in the second quarter, according to DigiTimes Research.

Related: Chinese Tech Analyst Confirms The Xiaomi Mi Pad 4 Is Still In Development

The sharp decline in tablet sales is expected to continue despite Apple launching new iPads for 2018, as Apple has failed to offer sharp price cuts in accordance with market expectations. Apple launched education-use iPads in the first quarter at a unit price of US$299, which come with Apple Pencil and software offering free learning resources and teaching instructions. However, Apple’s tablet shipments in the second quarter are expected to pick up significantly as it is slated to launch new iPad Pro devices for 2018 in the quarter. Amazon’s shipments are also likely to surge in preparations for Amazon Prime Day on July 10. But due to a scarcity of models from other non-Apple brands to support the second-quarter slow season, global tablet shipments from brand suppliers are estimated to see a slight sequential fall of 2.7% in the second quarter of 2018. DigiTimes estimates that the overall second-quarter global tablet shipments will further drop by 6.24% in Q2 to reach 31.06 million units.

Nokia Digital Health To Be Sold To Withings Co-Founder

Nokia plans to sell off its health division called Nokia Digital Health, originally known as Withings before it acquired it. Nest (Google) was said to be interested in purchasing the company but that won’t be the case anymore.

Nokia-Withings

The latest report says that Nokia has decided to sell it to one of the original co-founders of Withings, Éric Carreel. The French engineer was also the founding president of the company.

Nokia hasn’t revealed how much Mr. Carreel will be purchasing the division but it is safe to assume it will be less than the almost $200 million price Nokia paid back in 2016.

We also have no info on the future of products released during the brief period of time Nokia held ownership. Will they be phased out or renamed back to Withings? Time will tell.

Xiaomi Files For Hong Kong IPO, Expected To Raise At Least $10 Billion

After months of speculations and rumours, Xiaomi has finally filed for an IPO in Hong Kong. This marks a big win for the city of Hong Kong which has been trying to lure in tech companies to list in its stock exchange in recent times. In this regard, the city had made a few changes to its rules to allow for companies with multiple classes of shares to raise equity and this change seems to have paid off. It’s also an important milestone for Xiaomi as it opens its doors for public investors.

The IPO filings doesn’t mention the number of shares or the price per share but it is said that Xiaomi could be looking to raise at least $10 billion in its IPO. This should value the company at around $100 billion and it will likely be the biggest tech IPO of 2018.    In its filings, the company has revealed that 30% of the money raised would be used to develop its AI and IoT ecosystem, 30% would be used for R&D, and another 30% for global expansion. The remaining 10% would be used as working capital. Co-founders Lei Jun and Lin Bin will retain control of the company after the IPO through a special class of shares.

After a disappointing 2016, Xiaomi was quick to climb up the smartphone rankings ladder. In fact, yesterday’s Strategy Analytics report revealed that Xiaomi has climbed up to the fourth ranking in terms of global smartphone shipments, beating OPPO in Q1 2018. Sales in 2017 rose to 114.6 billion yuan, while the operating profit tripled to 12.2 billion yuan. The company posted a net loss of 43.9 billion yuan during this period but that was mainly because of pre-IPO preparations like issuing preferred shares to investors, making share based compensations and so on.

Apple Sold 52.2 Million iPhone And Generated $61.1 Billion Revenue In Q1 2018

During the period of January to March, Apple said that it sold 52.2 million iPhone. The company failed to beat the Wall Street estimate of 52.4 million iPhone handset sales during the same period.

Compared to the same period last year, this year’s sales figure is higher. Last year, the company had managed to sell 50.8 million units of iPhone. Commenting on the sales of iPhone X, Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, said, “customers chose iPhone X more than any other iPhone each week in the March quarter.”

Apple posted revenue for its Q1 of $61.1 billion, up from $52.9 billion last year. Wall Street expected $60.8 billion. Average selling prices for iPhone were $728, which is lower compared to the Wall Street expectations of $742.

However, the figure is up more than 10 percent from $655 a year ago, suggesting that the company’s iPhone X, which starts at $999, has helped the company to boost prices. Despite the lower Average Selling Price (ASP), revenue attributed to the iPhone rose 14% year-over-year.

The company said that it also sold 9.1 million iPad during the three month period, which is in-line with forecasts of 9.17 million units. Other products from the company, such as Apple Watch and the HomePod smart speaker were added into the “others” category, which had $3.9 billion in revenue for the quarter.

Apple is said to be focusing on services after witnessing a slowdown in smartphone sales. In the services department, the company reported $9.19 billion during the quarter, higher than the $8.39 billion that Wall Street was expecting.

It seems that the Cupertino-based company will increasingly rely on its services business, which includes the App Store, Apple Music, iCloud and Apple Pay, and other services to bolster its overall results.

Profits were $2.73 per share versus expectations of $2.68 per share, as of Monday, and up from $2.10 a year ago. Apple also predicted revenue of $51.5 billion to $53.5 billion in the June quarter, ahead of the $51.6 billion Wall Street expected.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 Release Date Could be Drawing Near

Earlier in this year, the upcoming Galaxy Tab S4 was found benchmarked with model number SM-T835 on GFXBench and HTML5 which indicated that Samsung is working on a successor edition for the Galaxy Tab S3. The same model number has been certified Wi-Fi Alliance which suggests that the arrival of the Galaxy Tab S4 could be drawing near.

According to the appearance of the Samsung SM-T835 at Wi-Fi Alliance site reveals that it is a tablet device that is preinstalled with Android 8.0 Oreo. Previous reports have suggested that there could be LTE and Wi-Fi only variants for the Galaxy Tab S4. The LTE model could be having a model number of SM-T830. It has been also found that the South Korean company is reportedly testing software builds with version numbers T830XXU0ARDA and T835XXU0ARDA for the Galaxy Tab S4.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 Wi-Fi Certified

The HTML5 benchmarks had also revealed that the SM-T835 is loaded with Android 8.0 Oreo. It had also shown that the tablet’s display will be offering an aspect ratio of 16:10 which indicates that the tablet will deliver good viewing experience while watching movies. It has the same aspect ratio as the first-generation Galaxy S model. The Galaxy Tab S2 and S3 tablets offer 4:3 aspect ratio.

The GFXBench listing of the SM-T835 had revealed that it features a 10.5-inch S-AMOLED display that supports QHD resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels. It is fueled by Snapdragon 835 SoC and 4 GB of RAM. It features a native storage of 64 GB. It has a rear camera of 12-megapixel and a front-facing shooter of 8-megapixel.

The Galaxy Tab S4 may borrow some of the features from the predecessor model. Hence, it may feature AKG tuned speakers, S Pen stylus and keyboard.

Samsung had launched the Galaxy Tab S3 tablet at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2017 in February last year. It is a known fact that the tablet industry is declining. Hence, this could be the reason why the South Korean company did launch the Galaxy Tab S3’s successor at MWC 2018 this year. It is likely that the firm may use the IFA 2018 tech trade show platform that is scheduled to take place in September at Berlin, Germany.

Facebook to Add Dating Service to Attract Young Users

During the Facebook F8 Developer Conference 2018 on Tuesday, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg confirmed that a new dating service will be soon added to the world’s largest online social networking website. The in-app dating feature will be having all the features that are usually found on a match-making app.

Facebook had considering adding the dating feature over a decade ago, but it is only now that the company is making it available to the users. Multiple market surveys have revealed in the recent past that Facebook is mainly used by people who belong to age group of 25 and 55. Hence, the new dating feature seems to be a new strategy by Facebook to attract young users.

Facebook claimed that in the previous month that the time spent by users on the site decline by around 50 million hours a day by the end of 2017. Hence, the whole idea behind introducing the dating feature is to increase the user base among young consumers and thereby compel more people to visit and stay longer on Facebook. According to Mark, there are 200 million Facebook users who have listed themselves as single which suggests that such people will want to use the upcoming dating feature.

Facebook Dating

Here is how to use the dating feature on Facebook:

  1. For dating on Facebook, users will be required to create a new “dating profile” for it. This profile will be only visible to non-friends who are using the dating feature.
  2. Users can then browse the Events and Groups in the city to checkout people who have same interests. For example, if a user attends an event, he/she can select the “unlock” profile option to see potential matches and the people attending the same show will be able to see it.
  3. Facebook will show only those people who share mutual interests and friends. After finding a suitable person to date, he/she may begin a conversation through a special messaging services that supports only text messaging. For security reasons, it won’t allow users to send images or links.

Xiaomi Mi Box Set-Top Box Gets Android Oreo Update

Xiaomi launched the Mi Box set-top box in the U.S in 2016 and the sales have been pretty awesome. The Mi Box launched with Android 6.0 Marshmallow and has not been officially updated to Android Nougat. It is, therefore, an interesting twist that the Mi Box has now reportedly been updated to Android Oreo. A Reddit user has confirmed that his unit got the update and he even shared a screenshot.Xiaomi Mi Box

This is no doubt a good one for the numerous M Box users across the globe. But the thing is, the user who got the Oreo update on his Mi Box had enrolled in the beta program when Xiaomi conducted a search for beta tester last year. The implication of this is that the update is likely only available to beta testers at the moment despite it being a stable build. But it is an indication that the Mi Box users in the U.S and perhaps elsewhere may soon start getting Android Oreo update.Xiaomi Mi Box Android Oreo Update

As a reminder, the Mi Box comes in a compact size just about that of a pocket wallet with some more weight and is coloured in matte black with ports for HDMI, USB, audio and power at the back. What could be said to be the main attraction on the device is its ability to stream 4K video at 60 frames per seconds (fps), something Apple TV cannot do. This 4K streaming ability places the device at par with Amazon TV box and Roku. Thus, Xiaomi claims the Mi Box is the best, most technically advanced streaming box money can buy and it came with a cheap price tag of just $69. The price still hovers around $69 but we recently spotted a seller on Amazon who offers the Mi Box for $39.99. That is the cheapest we have seen so far.
