Mi Love: Indonesian Couple Names Their Daughter “Xiaomi”

Xiaomi‘s fan base is sweeping rapidly through the whole of Asia, America, Europe and even Africa. This is evident in the large reception which greets the opening of a new Mi store in any of the countries in these regions. Globally, the fan base on the Mi Forum has seen an exponential increase over the years. Some of the fans have different ways of showing their love for the Mi brand. However, we don’t think we have seen any display of Mi love which compares to what a couple in Indonesia did by naming their child Xiaomi.Xiaomi-logo-featured

We are not sure if they even know the right pronunciation of the word or its meaning but as a manifestation of their love for the innovative Mi brand, they gave their daughter who was born in August 2017, the name. Don’t think this is another hype, the disclosure was made by XIaomi’s global VP Wang Xang and he shared a picture of the child’s birth certificate along with the news. The identity of the couple was also revealed as Fredi Yana (27) and Delima (25), residents of Abungjayo Village, Abung Selatan, North Lapung. The father, Fredi is said to have been a huge fan of the Mi brand since 2016. Coincidentally, the name Xiaomi means Small Rice in Mandarin and rice is the staple food of most Indonesian families.

We don’t think we are ever going to see this having a bandwagon effect. Or perhaps, would you name your child Xiaomi? For a thousand dollars I wouldn’t but maybe there are hundreds of fans out there who would do it, even at no cost.

Sino Market Research Releases Q1 2018 Sales Report For China: OPPO On top!

Research firm Sino market research has released its sales estimation for Q1 2018 for China’s smartphone market. The report shows BBK subsidiary company OPPO has once again mounted a comeback to the top spot. OPO grabbed the most market share to emerge as the number one brand for the first quarter of 2018. The report also ranked the top six contenders to be OPPO, Vivo, Apple, Huawei, Honor and Xiaomi.

The first quarter is usually a quiet time for OEMs since a number of the phones were launched in March when the first quarter was almost wrapping up. OPPO had released its OPPO R15 smartphone quite early and that could have impacted on  its Q1 sales. Vivo also has a couple of models out in Q1.

OPPO shipped a total of 18.52 million units in the first three months of the year while Vivo followed closely with 17.34 million units. Apple had a promising start to the year in the World’s largest mobile phone market with a total Q1 shipment of 16.8 million units. Chinese tech giant and market leader, Huawei shipped 14.42 million units and its Honor brand had a total shipment of 14 million units. Xaomi completed the top 6 list with a total shipment of 12.37 million. Other brands on the list include Meizu at number 7 with 3.91 million shipments, Gionee at number 8 with 2.39 shipments while Samsung is at number 9 with a mere 2.14 million shipments.

However, these are just numbers, Apple is number one in terms of gross revenue due to its high unit price point. Apple is followed by OPPO, Huawei, Vivo and Honor. For online sales, Honor topped while Xioami is second, Apple is third, Huawei fourth and Meizu completes the top 5. Honor’s online sales were pegged at 8.954 billion Yuan, only lower than Apple’s. Nevertheless, with an increase in the number of phones released this second quarter, there is likely going to be a major change in the ranking for the second quarter.

OnePlus 6’s Glass Body Teased Officially in a New Image

Recent reports have revealed that the upcoming OnePlus 6 will be coming with a revamped design compared to predecessor OnePlus flagship phone. OnePlus CEO Pete Lau had already confirmed in the previous month that the OnePlus 6 will be equipped with a notched display for delivering better viewing experience to its users. He has also released some other teasers that have confirmed the rear design of the phone and the existence of 3.5mm audio jack. As it can be seen in the below image, the corners of the OnePlus 6 are rounded. The bottom edge of the phone does not feature u-shaped antenna band that can be seen on OnePlus 5T and OnePlus 5 smartphones. Also, the rear panel seems to be slightly curved towards the edge. The translated text that accompanies the image on Weibo states that it has a transparent appeal and offers good hands-on experience.

The OnePlus CEO had recently stated that OnePlus 6 has a glass body and the new image also confirms a glass rear for it. Lau has said that the company tested 70 kinds of glass before finalizing on the best one for the OnePlus 6. Also, the back panel has five layers of nanocoating instead of three which allows it to sport a stronger impression of depth. Also, the glass body is expected to deliver certain waterproofing too.

First Meizu 15 Camera Samples Are Here & They Are Pretty Good!

Meizu announced the Meizu 15, 15 Plus and M15 models on Sunday and they feature powerful specs and an impressive design. However one of the most important features of any smartphone is its camera and in this article, we are going to focus on its rear dual cameras. We have the Meizu 15 with us right now and its already going through our review process. You can check out our hands on with the device here.

Meizu 15 hands on (2)

The Meizu 15 comes with a 12MP IMX380 1.55um primary sensor along with a 20MP IMX350 secondary sensor for 3x lossless zoom. Other features of the camera include 4-axis OIS, multi-frame synthesis tech for better low-light shots, scene recognition, and panorama mode. The front camera is a 20MP sensor with portrait mode.

We spent a few hours with the Meizu 15’s camera and so far, it has managed to impress us. The saturation levels are good and hence the colors pop out well, daylight pictures have good clarity and details, and the camera app manages to focus on the objects pretty quickly.

Meizu 15 Camera Samples 12

Low light photos are also good. The multi-frame synthesis technology kicks in as soon as the lighting conditions become dull and the resulting images are bright, with good saturation levels. We did find a bit of noise when the light was really low, for example, in the image above, it was nearly midnight and the only light available was via the lanterns (it was cloudy with no moonlight) that were lit up. Still, the colors and the overall photo came out quite decent. It does look a bit unclear, but that’s probably because we were still in Wuzen and were in a bit of a hurry to get a few quick samples. But things are much clearer when you take your time and shoot an image patiently, like in the image down below.

Meizu 15 Camera Samples (25)
Night Photography from Meizu 15

The Meizu 15’s camera managed to capture this image above pretty well. You might have seen the same scene from other cameras, so you’d know what I’m talking about here. For example, this same view taken at night from the Mi Mix 2S is down below. The Mi Mix 2S is definitely brighter, which is clearly visible from the lit up parking lot, but the Meizu 15 seems to be slightly sharper. The time at which the two pictures were taken are a bit different, but it should give a fair idea about their low light shooting capabilities.

xiaomi mi mix 2s cam sample (16)
Night Photography from Mi Mix 2S

One interesting thing about the Meizu 15’s camera app is that at extremely low light images, the flash pops up even when you have turned it off. For example, in the below image of the book shelf, we had switched off the lights in the room, which means it was pitch dark. Considering the lack of light, Meizu 15’s camera turned on the flash to ensure that we got some details. The resulting image looks pretty good.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t sunny in Wuzen, China when we took the phone out for samples. That’s why you won’t find any brightly lit samples or even ones where we can check out the phone’s dynamic range prowess. But we do have the phone with us right now, which means a thorough camera review is underway. Meanwhile, you can check out the rest of the samples from the Meizu 15’s camera down below.

Primebook Laptop Will Turn Android Into A Desktop Experience For A Few Bucks!

With Android smartphones getting popular every day, a lot of people prefer to have Android as the operating system of their PC. Chromebooks with Chrome OS are a perfect alternative to Windows 10 as it can run Android apps thanks to the Play Store support, but they do not run Android. An Indian company has just announced a new laptop which runs Prime OS, an operating system based on Android. It is not the only PC which can run Android, but it will surely be among the most affordable ones. The laptop is called Primebook and it has been showcased in Hong Kong.

Given that it is a laptop, it runs a custom Windows-like user interface which makes comfortable to use the PC with a mouse and a keyboard. It has a Windows-like desktop, an app launcher, and even the multi-window feature which allows opening several apps on the same screen. It is also possible to re-size every single window, just like Windows 10 does. Primebook also supports games: they can be played by using the mouse or the keyboard instead of the touchscreen, even if they do not support the input from external peripherals. Indeed, it is possible to assign the touch screen input to single keys or the mouse.

Even though Android P is coming soon, PrimeOS is an operating system still based on Android Nougat, but according to the company developers are already working on an update to Android Oreo. The main specs of the Primebook include the presence of a 13-inch display showing images at a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels. On the hardware side, there is a mid-range Rockchip RK3288 chipset paired with 2 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage. The notebook also features a big 10.000 mAh battery. The connectivity side includes a micro SD reader, an HDMI port, two USB 3.0 ports and a 3.5 mm jack. There is still no info about its launch in the market and its listing price, but given its components, it will surely be a cheap device.

DxO Labs Reportedly Having Deep Financial Troubles But DXOMark is Unaffected

DXOMark is gradually emerging as a worthy benchmark for cameras with its test results being bandied about whenever a new flagship phone is released. Some still dispute the authenticity of its results especially the Apple fanboys who may not agree that there are Android phones which trumps the latest iPhones in the camera aspect. Presently, the Huawei P20 Pro beat the Galaxy S9 and other to emerge as having the best-rated cameras.

This article isn’t about DxOMark, though, but about its former parent company DxOLabs. It is reported that DxO Labs is in financial trouble in its native France. DxO Labs makes image editing software such as DxO PhotoLab and the DxO One camera add-on for iPhone and Android. But now, sources suggest the company is bankrupt and is now in receivership. A letter which a customer was sent by the French company read thus;  (translated from French):

“Hello sir,

In fact, the company has recently been placed under a regime of judicial administration, the time to reorganize.

Although we can not comment on this situation, we can nevertheless assure you that the company is absolutely not in liquidation and that we are confident that our customers will not be affected by this procedure.”

Apart from the letter, a second evidence was shown and it is a legal notice (also translated from French) which talks about a judgment “declaring the opening of a bankruptcy proceeding.” It’s possible the translation might have distorted the meaning of the statement but it is likely that all is not well with the company. This will, however, not affect DXOMark since it is no longer a part of DxO Labs.

360 Mobiles Launching a New “Flagship” Phone in May

360 Mobiles is known for the sleek designs of its smartphones. The Chinese tech giant ventured into the full-screen segment with the launch of the 360 N6 Pro in November 2017. Barely five months after, it has emerged that the company is planning to release yet another premium smartphone. The screenshot of a laptop screen with a powerpoint document affixed with 360’s logo recently appeared online.

The PPT document showed the new 360 Mobiles flagship model is already being mass produced. The mass production started on April 18 while the finishing touches will be put in place by May. The source also hinted that the 360 Mobiles phone will be released in May which is next month.360 Mobiles

There are no further details about the device at the moment. But recently, an unknown 360 model running Snapdragon 670 chip was spotted on GeekBench. The company has since distanced itself from the chipset the device runs. However, the device will likely not use a Snapdragon 630 chip since that was used n the 360 N6 Lite. A lower Snapdragon 626 chipset may also likely not be used on the device. Thus, the buck still falls on the Snapdragon 670 chipset. We can’t say for sure but other specs details revealed on GeekBench include 6GB of RAM, and Android 8.1 Oreo operating system. We expect the device to also come with cost-effective pricing just like previous N-series models but the tipster claims the model will be more expensive than previous N-series models.

OnePlus’ Pete Lau Explains the Firm’s Design Philosophy & the OnePlus 6 Design

OnePlus has already unmasked the design of its next flagship – the OnePlus 6 and the design screams “Apple”. Well, not entirely but the OnePlus 6 is expected to feature a notch design at the top of its display. The design has been met with lots of criticism from fans and this had prompted OnePlus’ CEO Pete Lau to make some clarifications on why the company had to settle for a notch design despite the disapproval of such by the majority of its fans. oneplus

Pete Lau has now released yet another essay which explains the company’s overall design philosophy. The CEO began with an insight into the major feature of a product which in his opinion is burdenless user experience.  Pete Lau believes excellent industrial design should give people a sense of ease, which is best embodied by a burdenless feeling. The drive to achieve this is a long process which, according to the CEO, requires work on a daily basis to refine the subtle details, even if those details may seem minor.

By the way, Pete Lau also hinted that he isn’t only the CEO of OnePlus but also the product manager.  So, he is in a good position to discuss. Curiously, the philosophical analysis talked about pursuing an “honest design” which will perfectly serve the function of the product and even embody the product itself rather than tacking on additional elements just for the sake of hype. While we tend to agree with the CEO, the statement seems to sacrifice innovation on the altar of “honesty”. Ironically, the OnePlus 6 is having a design similar to the iPhone X. While we look for the perfect smartphone, users are also known to gravitate towards innovation just like the full-screen revolution ignited by the Xiaomi MIX and fuelled by the Galaxy S8.Oneplus 6 design

Pete Lau further created a controversy with his opinion on the smartphone design which we ordinarily see as something that should be different from the other smartphone, at least to some extent. The OnePlus CEO thinks we misunderstand industrial design. He opined that a truly good design does not deliberately pursue the exaggeration of the external form but may even extend to a prioritization of the internal form: the material, the craftsmanship, and the tiny details. With this kind of opinion, we’ll agree with the CEO that as the CEO and product manager, his greatest responsibility for the product lies in making tough but ultimately necessary decisions. I the long run, if the decisions are well-founded with principled reasoning, the end result will stand up on its own. Afterall, every decision the company claims it makes is based on countless rejections, resulting in a quick, continually iterative process.

The essay also touches on the OnPlus 6 design which he said also went through a similar process of continual iteration before reaching its current state. The company maintained its signature horizon line and precise curve to the back of the device which has remained as important elements of OnePlus’ design language right from the OnePlus One to the OnePlus 5T. He again reiterated that the device will come with a glass body. The company’s design team tested over 70 glass prototypes before selecting the best one and the device will have 5 layers of Nanotech Coating instead of 3 which give the back of the device a stronger impression of depth.

Both Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 and Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro have exactly the same display size and resolution, but at least on paper, the M1 has a slightly better display due to its 85% NTSC color gamut and 1500:1 contrast. When it comes to the hardware side, it is the same in both models, but Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 also features a micro SD dedicated slot which is not present on the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro: so you can use the dual SIM slot and the micro SD at the same time. While Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro comes with a customized UI (MIUI 9), Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 offers a stock Android experience (based on 8.1 Oreo), unlike all other Zenfones. Cameras have similar specs, but even though we did not test Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1, we believe Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro should shoot slightly better photos.

On the opposite side, Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 has a bigger battery with a huge capacity of 5000 mAh. Not only will Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 last longer than its opponent on a single charge, but it may also be the phone with the longest battery life among devices from mainstream brands.

The launch price of Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 in China is about $165/€134 for the 3/32 GB version, $195/€159 for the 4/64 GB configuration and $225/€183 for the 6/64 GB variant. Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro has been introduced in the Chinese market with a price tag of about $218/€177 for the 4/64 GB version and $265/€216 for the 6/64 GB configuration. On paper, Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 wins this comparison with its monster battery making the big difference along with a pure Android experience.
