Xiaomi Surge S2 Specifications Leaked, Likely to Power Xiaomi Mi 6X and Debut at MWC 2018

In February 2017, Xiaomi had debuted the Mi 5C smartphone. What’s special about this smartphone is that it is powered by Xiaomi’s in-house chipset called Surge S1. The rumors that had surfaced in the latter half of 2017 had claimed that the company is working on the Surge S2, the second-generation edition of its chipset. Fresh leaks suggest that the Chinese manufacturer will launch the alleged Surge S2 chipset at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2018 in the next month.

Surge-S1

After the launch of the Surge S1 chipset, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun had claimed that the company will continue to develop more chipsets in future. It is now speculated that the Surge S2 will be a powerful chipset unlike the Surge S1 that had powered the mid-range Xiaomi Mi 5C. Rumors have it that the Surge S2 that is based on TSMC’s 16nm manufacturing processor features an octa-core processor. It reportedly features four cores of Cortex A73 that clocks at 2.2 GHz and four cores of Cortex A53 that processes at 1.8 GHz.

The other rumored features of the Surge S2 include Mali G71 MP8 graphics, UFS 2.1 storage and LPDDR4 RAM. Also, it does not carry support for CDMA network. These specifications suggest that the performance of the Surge S2 will be on par with Kirin 960 chipset by Huawei.

Apple May Upgrade Some iPhone 6 Plus Owners To iPhone 6s Plus

Just before the end of 2017, Apple revealed that it purposely slowed down older iPhones to prevent the batteries from shutting down abruptly. Expect owners to get mad at the revelation. In order to placate users, Apple announced it had reduced battery replacement costs from $79 to $29. However, iPhone 6 Plus users may be getting a better deal.

iPhone 6 Plus

An internal Apple memo sent to authorized service providers last week revealed that iPhone 6 Plus owners may get upgraded to the iPhone 6s Plus. The reason for that, according to Macrumors who first reported the news, is likely due to a shortage of iPhone 6 Plus replacement batteries.

An earlier report already revealed that Apple has stopped manufacturing the iPhone 6 Plus. Since it would take some time to restart production of the phone and battery, Apple will substitute the phone for the iPhone 6s Plus instead.

However, this will only go on until the end of March 2018 as battery replacements are expected to be back in stock by April. There is still no info as to how Apple will determine if you get the upgrade or which models of the phone are eligible.

Galaxy S9 May Feature Samsung’s New ISOCELL Sensors That Shoot FHD Slo-Mo At 480fps

Last year, Sony’s Xperia XZ Premium flagship launched with a camera that could record slow-motion HD videos at 960fps. Although it could only record in that mode for a few mili-seconds. Samsung’s Galaxy S9 series may be coming with slo-motion at a higher resolution albeit at a slower frame rate.

Samsung today unveiled its new ISOCELL sensors that can record slo-motion videos at 1080p resolution but at 480fps. This is half the frame rate of the Xperia XZ Premium but at a higher resolution. There are speculations that the sensor should be able to shoot slo-mo at 720p/960fps too.

Samsung ISOCELL Low-Light

Slo-motion recording is not the only feature of Samsung’s new ISOCELL sensors. Low-light photography is set to get better too. The sensor uses Bright’s Tetracell technology which combines four-neighboring pixels to serve as one large pixel. It will also use a Smart WDR feature to take multiple exposures in a single shot. This results in a picture with greater detail for both light and dark areas.

Samsung ISOCELL Fast Focus

Focusing gets a boost too. The new ISOCELL sensor features advanced PDAF such as Dual Pixel and Super Phase Detection (Super PD) sensor. These sensors can identify the distance of fast-moving objects even in low-light conditions. There is also a 3-stack Fast Readout Sensor for high-speed capture in FHD video.

Alleged Nokia 10 Schematics Leak Showcase A Revolver-Like Rear Camera (6 Sensors)

While we are waiting for the alleged Nokia 9 to show up at MWC 2018 in Barcelona, the first rumors about Nokia 10 have already started to surface. The first image regarding this device has been posted on Baidu: it is a schematic image which shows the rear camera of the alleged flagship that will be launched by HMD Global in H2 2018. According to the image, the handset sports a revolver-like camera which is composed of six sensors in a circular configuration. At the center of the circle, there seems to be a LED flash, while each of the sensors seems to be coupled with a secondary flash LED.

nokia 10

Under the incredible camera setup of the Nokia 10, there is a fingerprint reader which makes us think that it will be not embedded in the display through the latest chip announced by Synaptics. Note that this is not an official image and we cannot guarantee its authenticity. In fact, it would really be hard to get a design like this in a commercial smartphone, but it’s definitely worth checking out the schematics of such a design.

If such a design exists, then the lens should obviously be co-developed with Zeiss, as the company has collaborated with Zeiss since the age of feature phones and it has renewed the cooperation in the second half of 2017. Other rumored specs of the alleged Nokia 10 include the presence of an 18:9 display with narrow bezels, just like most of the most important flagships launched in the last year.

Under the hood, the phone is expected to feature an octa-core Snapdragon 845 SoC, which is the most powerful mobile chip launched by Qualcomm. It is composed of 8x Kryo 385 CPUs running at a max frequency of 2.8 GHz and an Adreno 630 GPU. It also has a dedicated module for artificial intelligence and machine learning, and it includes a Qualcomm Snapdragon X20 LTE modem which can reach a max download speed of 2.2 Gbps.

Well, this Nokia 10 back schematic is definitely something that’s out of a dream concept design. So, do you think such a design is possible in a real smartphone?

New Xiaomi Mi 7 Render Reveals Bezel-Less Design And Dual Rear Cameras

Xiaomi has confirmed to participate in the upcoming Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The company is expected to launch its upcoming flagship phone — Xiaomi Mi 7 at the event.

While it is known that the company’s upcoming flagship phone will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 processor, nothing has been confirmed about the physical design aspects of the device.

Recently, a shady render of the phone appeared online through a Nigerian website, however, we couldn’t confirm if it was genuine or not. Now, a new render of the phone has appeared online, which is quite different from the earlier image.

Xiaomi Mi 7 Render Leak

The newly leaked render shows the phone with a bezel-less design, similar to what we saw on Xiaomi’s Mi MIX 2. The bezels are extremely thin on the three sides — left, right and bottom. However, the bezel is a bit thicker on the top side, mainly to house camera, earpiece and other sensors.

The back panel reveals that the phone will come with a dual camera setup and a dual-tone LED flash. The camera module has been placed on the top-left corner. There is also a fingerprint sensor placed at the top-centre position. At the bottom part, there’s Mi branding.

The recently leaked render suggested that the phone could have a glass back panel. This is in line with earlier reports which said that the phone is likely to come with Wireless Charging support — the first for the China-based smartphone manufacturer.

There are also reports making rounds which suggests that the Mi 7 will be the first device from Xioami to have Artificial Intelligence capabilities for the rear camera to offer stellar photography experience. According to the rumours, the phone will come with 6-inch AMOLED display with full-screen 18:9 aspect ratio.

The Xiaomi Mi 7 is said to come equipped monochrome + RGB dual camera system. It is likely to feature a 12-megapixel Sony IMX380 sensor and a 20-megapixel Sony IMX350 sensor. Last month, during the announcement of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 processor, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun said that the company’s upcoming flagship will be powered by the same chipset.

Along with Mi 7, the company is also expected to launch Mi 7 Plus at the Mobile World Congress. However, the company has not yet officially confirmed this. So, we’ll just have to wait for the Mobile World Congress to kick-off.

Google Fuchsia OS Shown Running on Pixelbook

Back in 2016, news of a new Operating System by Google surfaced on the internet. Called Fuchsia, the OS is based on a new microkernel called Zircon instead of Linux like Android and ChromeOS. There were reports that Fuchsia would replace Android but Google has not confirmed that.

Fuchsia OS on the Pixelbook

Fast forward to January 2018; Google released a guide on how to run Fuchsia on the Pixelbook and the team at Ars Technica made a video giving us a look at the new operating system.

The over 8-minute long video shows a number of features most of which are not working since the OS is unfinished. However, there are some pretty cool features.

On the lock-screen, there is a Fuchsia logo at the top left corner that lets you switch between phone mode and laptop mode. You can also switch the orientation from portrait to landscape or vice versa when in phone mode.

There are a number of buttons at the bottom right corner such as Login, Wi-Fi, and Guest. Ars Technica says only “Guest” works. Click on it and you get taken to the homescreen.

Fuchsia OS Homescreen

The homescreen is sort of a blend of Google Now and your regular homescreen. Above the Google search bar are icons for time, date, WiFi (doesn’t work), and battery level (works). There is also a Fuchsia button which opens up a quick settings panel.

The OS also supports split-screen multitasking in both vertical and horizontal modes as well as a new tab mode.

Most of the features do not work but you get an idea of what is to come when Google eventually finishes it. However, there are reports that this may not happen soon.

Upcoming Sony Xperia Smartphone With 5.7-Inch Display Hits FCC

Sony, the Japan-based manufacturer which recently launched its entry-level and mid-range phones at the Consumer Electronics Show, is expected to launch a range of phone under its Sony Xperia branding this year.

While we have seen a lot of leaks surrounding Sony Xperia devices, a new phone from the company with the model number ID PY7-21831A has surfaced online as it passed through FCC. While FCC listing usually does not reveal anything about the phone, this one reveals that there won’t be a 3.5mm audio jack on this device.

Sony Xperia FCC listing

If this turns out to be true, then this could be the first phone from the company to ditch the 3.5mm audio jack. As there’s very low possibility that Sony could drop the audio jack in a mid-range device, this upcoming Sony phone could be the Xperia flagship device.

Sony Xperia FCC listing (cables)

The schematic image in the FCC listing reveals the use of a combined USB / headphone jack cable connection. Furthermore, the attached document also highlights the dimensions of the phone with 152.79 x 72.42 mm, and a 5.7-inch screen diagonal display. However, it is not yet known if the display carries the regular 16:9 aspect ratio of the trending 18:9 aspect ratio for full-screen displays.

Sony has confirmed that it is holding a press event at the upcoming Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. At the event, the company is expected to unveil its new devices, including the Xperia XZ Pro. According to the latest reports, the XZ Pro is expected to come with a 4K OLED display.
