MediaTek Likely To Debut 7nm Flagship Chipsets Later This Year

The Taiwan-based MediaTek Inc. had released the Helio X30 (MT6799) system-on chip built with 10nm FinFET processing technology in Q1 2017. According to industry sources, MediaTek’s Helio P series chipsets will be powering the mid-range and high-end smartphones in the first half of this year. Since the smartphone industry will soon see the advent of the 5G mobile communication era, MediaTek is speculated to launch a flagship smartphone chipset in the second half of this year.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is expected to build at least three new 7nm chipsets for MediaTek. This indicates how determined it is to become the numero uno chipset manufacturing company. As many of its customers such as OPPO, Vivo, Sony, LG and other smartphone makers from emerging nations are getting ready to embrace the upcoming 5G technology, the Taiwan-based chip making company has been actively working on AI enabled chipsets. As mentioned above, the company is heavily pegged to debut new chipsets for flagship phones in second half of this year.

At the beginning of 2017, MediaTek had released Helio X10, Helio X20 and Helio X30 chipsets for high-end smartphones. Even though the Taiwanese firm provided advanced technology at cheaper price compared to rivaling chipset making companies such as Qualcomm, it could not succeed in bagging many customers.

Mediatek Helio P70

The probable reason why it failed to attract major customers like Apple, Samsung, Huawei and Xiaomi is that these companies have been developing their own in-house chipsets for their smartphones. Moreover, most of the leading smartphone vendors are interested in using Qualcomm’s chipsets. This is speculated to be the reason why MediaTek decided to halt the production of its Helio X series chipsets. Also, in order to prevent the gross margins of chipsets from falling down, MediaTek had to stop the related investments in the latter half of last year.

Recent reports have revealed that the upcoming Helio P-series chipsets from MediaTek are the Helio P40 and Helio P70. These 12nm chipsets built by TSMC will be focused on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and facial recognition.

iPhone X’s OLED Display Better Than Galaxy Note 8 In A Screen Burn-In Test

Apple iPhone X is the first phone launched by Apple to sport an OLED display. Its screen has been made by Samsung and it is actually the best display in the smartphone market, according to DisplayMate, which defines it even better than the Samsung Galaxy phones’ Super AMOLED panels. A new test has highlighted that the display of this handset might be even better than we expected. The screen burn-in is the worst problem of OLED displays: in the long-term, images remain permanently impressed on the screen.

iphone x

This is the main concern of the people that choose to move from a phone with an LCD display to an OLED or Super AMOLED one. But even though the iPhone X has an OLED display, it can prevent burn-in for a considerable amount of time. In a burn-in test, an image was continuously displayed on the iPhone X screen, but burn-in effects started appearing only after 510 hours. This is a huge period which makes us understand that it is very hard to see the burn-in effect on the latest flagship by Apple.

Indeed, the same test was performed on Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge and Samsung Galaxy Note 8 and the result being: much fewer hours were necessary to create the burn-in effect, and after 510 hours the burn-in effect was much more visible than the one on the iPhone X. So, you do not have to worry too much about screen burn-in if you decide to purchase an iPhone X unless you keep its display continuously showing the same image for days. If you want to see the complete comparison with all the photos for each phone tested, head to the source link below. Do you like the colors provided by OLED displays like the one of Apple iPhone X or you prefer the classic LCD ones?

Along with the Android 8.1 Oreo, the update for the Oppo R11s also brings a bunch of new features to the device. One of the major highlights of the update is that it brings support for the Dual SIM and Dual VoLTE feature.

Vivo X20 Plus UD Version Passes 3C Certification, Could Be Under Display Fingerprint Model

Vivo has long been linked with the under display fingerprint technology developed by Qualcomm. The prototype was showcased at the Asian MWC 2017 running in an unknown Vivo smartphone. There are indications the version may have been certified in China. A device suspected to be the Vivo X20 Plus Under Display version has received 3C certification.vivo

The smartphone actually is listed as Vivo X20 Plus UD version and it is believed the UD stands for Under Display. Since the device has received quality certification, it may soon hit the market. But is this really the Under display version? We can’t be so sure of that as UD could also mean Underwater Defense, that is a waterproof body and could also mean UpDate. However, a version with under display looks more likely. vivo x20 Plus

China’s 3C listing usually doesn’t show anything regarding the specification of the model, so we can’t say if this is merely an upgraded version of the X20 Plus. But we’ll find out soon, as the latest technology is expected to be showcased at MWC 2018 in a few weeks time. To refresh your memory, the new Under display fingerprint scanner uses Synaptic’s new Clear ID fingerprint technology. According to Forbes, pressing the button present on the right side of a pre-production Vivo phone wakes it and displays an illuminated fingerprint image at the bottom of the screen. Users can simply touch it to unlock the phone instantly. Synaptics has said that its Clear ID in-display fingerprint scanner is designed for bezel-less OLED infinity displays that are found in flagship smartphones such as Apple iPhone X and Samsung Galaxy Note 8.

Sharp Aquos S3 Leaked Image Shows Display Will Have A Notch

It appears that Sharp’s next phone, the Aquos S3 will also feature a notch. However, this time it will be different from that of the Aquos S2 or rather the Essential Phone.

Sharp Aquos S3

A blurred image of the Sharp S3’s front shows a notch not dissimilar to that of the iPhone X. We can make out the front camera which is in the same position as the images on TENAA. There is also a faint outline of some sensors positioned on the left.

Sharp yesterday revealed that the Aquos S3 will launch on January 16 but we expect it to come along with a second phone, the Sharp FS8018. The latter shares a front design similar to the Aquos S2 but a different rear. There is a chance it also has a notch in the display.

Sony Xperia L2’s 360-Degree Renders Reveal its Full Appearance

Sony had debuted the Xperia L1 smartphone at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2017 event in February last year. Speculations are rife that the Japanese tech giant will unveil the Xperia L2 as its successor phone at the MWC 2018 that is scheduled to take place in the next month. Well-known leakster @OnLeaks has collaborated with CompareRaja to reveal the 360-degree renders of the upcoming Xperia L2 smartphone.

Among the Xperia smartphones that were launched in 2017, the Xperia L1 is the cheapest handset. The renders of the Xperia L2 suggest that it won’t be featuring a full screen design. The handset will be measuring 149.9 x 78.4 x 9.8 mm.  Compared to the Xperia L1 that measures 151 x 74 x 8.7 mm, the successor phone is likely to arrive with a slightly taller, wider and thicker chassis.

Like the Xperia L1, the L2 will be featuring a 5.5-inch display. The L1 supports HD resolution. However, there are no details available on the screen resolution of the Xperia L2. The L1 is driven by MediaTek MT6737T chipset and 2 GB of RAM. However, the L2 is speculated to be powered by Snapdragon 630 chipset and 4 GB of RAM. It will come pre-installed with Android Nougat OS. There is no information available on the other specs of the phone.

OnePlus 5T Lava Red Variant Goes On Sale In China Adopting Same Price Tag

OnePlus launched the OnePlus 5T in China on November 28 and the flagship was accompanied by a surprise. The surprise comes in the form of a new Lava Red colour variant designated as its fourth-anniversary edition. Since the launch, the OP5T has only been available in the Midnight Black variant with the Lava Red variant unavailable. However, the cool Red variant has now gone up for sale in China and is listed on OnePlus’ official website serving the Chinese market.OnePlus 5T Lava Red Color Variant

Despite its attractive and colourful paint job, the Lava Red variant still comes with the same price tag as the Midnight Black variant. The OnePlus 5T’s price remains unchanged at 3,499 Yuan. Do note that the new sleek variant is only available in 8GB RAM + 128GB storage and the price is consistent with the top-end Midnight Black-coloured variant. OnePlus 5T Lavav Red sales

Apart from the colour, the Lava Red utilises the same design as the Midnight Black variant. The OnePlus 5T prides itself on having an 80.5% screen-to-body ratio on top of a 6.01-inch FHD+ AMOLED display. The device comes with minimally curved corners (the radius of curvature is smaller than what’s found on devices like the Galaxy Note 8 and Galaxy S8, for example). We should be looking at a better display than the OP 5 especially as we are told the jelly scrolling issue on the OnePlus 5 display isn’t present on the 5T. The device also packs an improved dual camera setup at the rear and as is powered by a Snapdragon 835 chip. The dual-Nano SIM packing flagship gets its juice from a 3300mAh battery with support for DASH fast charge technology. The phone also features the USB Type-C interface and a 3.5mm audio jack.  There are indications the OP5T Lava Red variant could hit India on January 26, meaning it could be made available to buy in other markets outside China.

HTC U12’s Leaked Render Shows Its Design

In this year, HTC had debuted its first U series flagship phone, the HTC U11 in May. The Taiwanese company is expected to announce its successor phone, the HTC U12 in May this year. A leaked render of the alleged HTC U12 has surfaced to reveal its design.

The leaked render shows that just like the U11 and U11+, the HTC U12 will be also arriving with 18:9 aspect ratio display. The screen appears to be surrounded by super-slim bezels. There is a single selfie camera on the top bezel of the phone.

Since the HTC U12 is expected to sport a full screen design, its fingerprint scanner will be placed on the back panel. The volume buttons and the Power key are located on the right edge of the phone. Its bottom edge seems to feature a USB-C charging port. The overall design of the U12 may not be very different from its predecessor.

The rumor mill has recently revealed that the HTC U12 would be equipped with a 4K display. Like the predecessor phone, the upcoming HTC flagship is rumored to feature a metal and glass combination chassis.

htc-u12-leaked-render

The Snapdragon 845 chipset is rumored to power the HTC U12. Apart from the fingerprint scanner, the rear panel of the phone is also speculated to house dual rear cameras. Also, it is unlikely to house a 3.5mm audio jack. All the above rumored features seem to be spot on, but the arrival of 4K display on HTC U12 seems too good to be true.

Since the past few of years, Sony has been selling smartphones with 4K display such as Xperia Z5 Premium and Xperia XZ Premium. Both the smartphones usually function in full HD resolution, but they switch to 4K resolution when 4K content is played. HTC may offer such kind of 4K display on the U12.

All the aforementioned information is preliminary rumors of the HTC U12. The rumor mill is expected to reveal better renders of the phone and detailed information on its specs in the coming weeks. Hence, readers are advised to digest this report with a grain of salt.
