Samsung’s Now Brief feature, introduced with the Galaxy S26 as part of its Galaxy AI push, sounds like one of those ideas that should just work. Your daily info, neatly summarized in one place. Weather, reminders, news, a few suggestions. It’s all there on the home or lock screen. In practice, though, it’s been a bit of a mixed bag.

Now Brief pulls together updates from different sources and presents them as a daily snapshot. You’ll see things like weather, calendar reminders, screen time summaries, and sometimes recommendations from apps like YouTube. There’s also some customization, with categories like health, travel, and traffic. But from what many users are saying, the experience isn’t always as “smart” as it sounds. News can feel outdated, suggestions miss the mark, and a lot of it overlaps with apps people already check directly.

Where things get more interesting is in a setting called “Get richer insights.” This is where Samsung leans more heavily into personalization, with toggles for services like YouTube and Gemini. Turning these on is supposed to improve recommendations. More relevant videos, better suggestions tied to your habits or plans.

But there’s a catch, and it’s not a small one. Enabling these options means sharing a fairly wide range of data with Google. That can include things like your schedule, reminders, bookings, browsing activity, and even the kind of videos you watch. The idea is to give the system more context, but it also means handing over a deeper look into your daily routine.

Samsung does make it optional, and the basic version of Now Brief works without enabling these features. Still, it raises a familiar question. How much personalization is worth the trade-off? For some, the added convenience might be useful. For others, it may feel like more access than they’re comfortable giving up.

Either way, it’s a reminder that smarter features often come with a bit of fine print.

AI has become one of the biggest selling points of Galaxy smartphones over the past few years. In fact, all the launch events for the last two generations of Galaxy S and Galaxy Z series flagships focused heavily on how these devices aim to make life easier through AI-driven features. On the other hand, the list of hardware improvements has been relatively short in those releases. This has also raised concerns about Samsung potentially charging for the very features that were highlighted as the key selling point of these devices.

The brand initially promised to keep Galaxy AI features “complimentary through 2025,” a statement that didn’t clearly explain what would happen beyond that period. It made headlines and, quite reasonably, sparked concerns among Galaxy fans who were convinced by, and grew to rely on, these features.

Now, Samsung has finally clarified its future plans regarding the key selling point of its phones. The Galaxy AI landing page has been updated with a footnote stating: “Galaxy AI basic features provided by Samsung are free. Future releases may include enhanced features or new services that are offered on a paid basis. Different terms may apply for AI features provided by third parties.”

Samsung hints at plans to charge for some advanced AI features

Samsung is likely to push more advanced — and possibly more convenient — AI features going forward that make Galaxy phones smarter. However, the statement also hints that the brand plans to eventually charge for some advanced and potentially niche AI features. The upcoming Galaxy S26 series, for instance, is expected to focus heavily on proactive, on-device AI.

“Galaxy AI basic features are those services listed under ‘Advanced Intelligence’ in the current Samsung Services Terms and Conditions,” the company further explained in the footnote.

Under “Advanced Intelligence” in Samsung’s Terms, the basic, free Galaxy AI features include communication tools such as Live Translate, Interpreter, Chat Assist, and Transcript Assist, along with productivity-focused features like Note Assist, Writing Assist, Browsing Assist, Now Brief, and Photo Assist.

While the “basic” Galaxy AI features are now confirmed to remain free indefinitely, Samsung’s decision to potentially charge for future AI capabilities could signal a broader industry shift. After all, it’s common for smartphone brands to take notes from each other’s playbooks. How the “AI features” category evolves by the end of the year will be worth watching.

It’s also worth noting that some features powered by Google Gemini, such as Gemini Live, fall under the “AI features provided by third parties” category, meaning different terms could apply to them.

Samsung has just announced a Galaxy Event that will take place on September 4. According to the official announcement, the event will showcase the latest AI experiences and several new Galaxy devices.

While Samsung has not explicitly named those devices, it says there will be new premium AI tablets and a new member of the Galaxy S25 series. It doesn’t take long to realize the brand is actually hinting at the Galaxy S25 FE and the Galaxy Tab S11 series that have been in the leaks and rumor mill for a while now.

Both the Galaxy S25 FE and Galaxy Tab S11 series will come with Android 16-based One UI 8 right out of the box. This also means the S25 FE will get the One UI 8 before other Galaxy S25 models, which are currently on One UI 7 and are scheduled to receive a stable One UI 8 update sometime in September.

Another plus point for the Fan Edition model is that it will get an additional major upgrade. So, while the Galaxy S25 FE will receive OS updates all the way up to Android 23, other S25 models will remain stuck on Android 22.

Besides new Galaxy hardware, a significant portion of the Galaxy Event will focus on Galaxy AI. However, it’s unclear whether the brand will unveil new Galaxy AI features or simply highlight the existing Galaxy AI features that are already available on the Galaxy S25 series and Galaxy Z Fold 7. The latter seems more likely as One UI 8 has already debuted on the Galaxy Z Fold 7, and the next major upgrade isn’t coming anytime soon.

When Samsung first started talking about “Galaxy AI,” I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect. The term “AI” gets thrown around a lot these days. Sometimes, it’s just another buzzword for features we’ve had for years. 

But after actually using a Samsung phone with Galaxy AI built in, I’ve realized that some of these tools are not only useful but also surprisingly easy to fit into everyday life. They’re not gimmicks; they actually help.

So instead of giving you a technical breakdown, I want to walk through the features that stood out to me the most, the ones I keep going back to. Here are all of them.

Live Translate

The first time I used Live Translate on a call, I was a little skeptical. I was talking to a friend who isn’t comfortable with English, and I figured the translations might be clunky or slow. But the feature actually worked surprisingly smoothly.

Here’s how it works. While you’re on a call, you can activate Live Translate by pressing on the Call Assist menu that appears on top of the in-call menu. You can now select the language you want your conversation to be translated into. And this way, both sides of the conversation get real-time translations. 

I speak in English, and the other person hears it in their preferred language. When they reply, I see their words translated into English on my screen.

It’s not perfect; sometimes the translations can be a little stiff, but it’s good enough to keep the conversation flowing. The best part is that it all happens directly on the phone, so you don’t need a separate app running in the background.

For me, this has been one of the most impressive Galaxy AI features. It’s practical and removes a real barrier when you’re talking to people who speak different languages.

Circle to Search

Even though it’s incredibly simple, Circle to Search is one of the features I use the most. We’ve all been in situations where we spot a product, a place, or even just a random object while scrolling through social media that makes us curious. Circle to Search makes it incredibly easy to learn more about those things.

You just hold down the home button and literally draw a circle around whatever’s on the screen. Instantly, Google pulls up results about that item, no need to type anything, no need to open a browser separately.

I used it the other day while scrolling through Instagram. Someone was wearing a jacket I liked, so I circled it, and within seconds, I had links to where I could buy similar styles. Another time, I used it on a picture of a dish I didn’t recognize, and it showed me what it was and even gave me recipes.

It feels like a small feature, but the way it integrates into daily use makes it one of the most natural AI tools Samsung has added.

Chat Assist

Messaging is probably a big part of everyone’s daily life in 2025, but sometimes you want your words to come across differently depending on the situation. That’s where Chat Assist comes in handy.

I tried it while drafting an email, and the tool offered to rephrase my text in different tones. If I wanted it more professional, it cleaned up my wording. If I wanted it casual, it relaxed the tone. 

You may still want (or need) to tweak the message here and there to add your personal touch, but it’s a huge time-saver. And since everything happens within the keyboard itself, you don’t have to switch apps either.

Note Assist

If you’ve ever recorded a lecture, an interview, or even just a long voice note, you’ll know how messy it can be to go back and figure out what was said. Samsung’s Transcript Assist has been surprisingly useful here.

The feature can clean a transcript within seconds and can even summarize the main points. What surprised me most was how accurate it was, even with multiple people speaking.

It’s not just for professionals either. I’ve used it to capture personal notes, like when I had a long conversation with a relative about a family function or gathering. Having it written out makes it so much easier to revisit later.

Generative Edit

Samsung has built some AI smarts into its photo editor as well, and while I usually don’t bother much with editing, I ended up using these tools more than I expected.

The standout for me is the ability to remove unwanted objects. I might not be wrong in saying that Samsung currently has the best generative fill for object removal. 

You’ve probably seen some reels or shorts where Samsung’s generative AI reconstructs an entire face even when it’s partially covered, while Apple’s AI often struggles in the same scenario. That’s how good it is.

Another neat trick is resizing or moving objects within a photo. At first, I thought it might look fake, but most of the time, the edits are seamless. If you post a lot on social media, these tools can save you from retaking shots over and over.

A few things I’ve noticed

After using these features for a while, there are a couple of things to take notes of. First, most of them require an internet connection since the AI runs partly on Samsung’s servers. That means if you’re offline, you can’t rely on them. 

Second, the accuracy can vary. Live Translate works best with major languages, but it’s less reliable for rare ones. Similarly, generative edits in photos sometimes leave small glitches.

But overall, these aren’t deal-breakers. The important thing is that the features save time and effort in real situations.

Samsung has finally cleared the air around the future of Galaxy AI, its growing suite of artificial intelligence tools found across Galaxy smartphones, tablets, and wearables. After months of speculation over whether these features would eventually be paywalled, the company has now confirmed which parts of Galaxy AI will remain free — permanently.

In a statement shared with Android Police, Samsung said all AI features developed in-house and preloaded on Galaxy devices will continue to be free forever. These tools, introduced with the Galaxy S24 lineup in early 2024, include things like Live Translate, Note Assist, Generative Wallpapers, Audio Eraser, Object Eraser, and Writing Assist — all designed to make communication, productivity, and photo editing more intuitive. They’re deeply integrated into One UI 7, One UI 8 and are available across newer models such as the Galaxy S25, Z Fold 7, and Watch 8 series.

But it’s not all built by Samsung

Galaxy AI also taps into Google’s Gemini platform for some advanced features, including voice-activated actions and advanced image editing. These Gemini-powered tools are free for now but may eventually require a paid subscription, as they fall under Google’s control. Google’s Gemini Advanced tier already offers premium access to more powerful capabilities — such as video generation — a sign that some parts of the Galaxy AI experience could be monetized in the future.

Samsung had previously added a disclaimer stating that Galaxy AI features would be free “until the end of 2025,” which led to confusion among users. It now appears that this language was primarily aimed at covering any changes Google might make to its own services, not Samsung’s. With over 400 million Galaxy AI-enabled devices expected by the end of this year, the company seems keen to reassure users that core features aren’t going anywhere — or going behind a paywall.

Samsung’s latest clarification draws a clear line: tools made by Samsung will remain free, while Google’s more advanced AI services may eventually come at a cost.

Have you seen Galaxy AI features functioning on older and non-eligible Galaxy devices? Apparently, Samsung has too—just they weren’t happy about it.

Samsung Internet, the default web browser for Galaxy phones and tablets, offers some helpful AI features such as web page summarization, translation, and Read Aloud, which are only available to a handful of recent devices. But someone actually found a way to enable the Browsing Assist features of Samsung Internet even on entry-level Galaxy phones. Unfortunately, this new way of experiencing the Browsing Assist lasted only slightly over a week, as the South Korean giant fixed its mistake, releasing a new update for its Samsung Internet browser.

Now, there’s only one way to access Browsing Assist

It was technically possible for all Galaxy devices with the browser to perform the AI features, as all the processing can be offloaded to the company’s cloud servers. The browser reportedly didn’t have any hardware limitations for the Browsing Assist features in place, which made it possible to enable them on non-eligible devices by simply changing some settings in Samsung Internet’s debug menu.

With Samsung Internet version 28.0.0.59, the company has reportedly fixed this, making it impossible (or much harder) for older devices to access the features. It leaves only one way to experience the features—upgrade to a newer, and possibly more expensive, Galaxy phone that’s eligible for the features.

This move may come across as anti-consumer, especially since older phones could run the features. But it’s not entirely black and white. Supporting millions of extra cloud-based requests might not be feasible for Samsung.

And let’s not forget—this is the same brand that switched to a 3A cable to bundle with its latest flagships, which is a downgrade from the S24 series’ 5A cable.

One UI 7 is one of the biggest software upgrades for Galaxy devices in recent years. It was released with the Galaxy S25 series at the Galaxy Unpacked event in January. The newest flagship phones running One UI 7 pack a host of software goodies, including several Galaxy AI features such as Now Bar, Now Brief, and more. Since these features were unveiled alongside One UI 7, many (including some of us at Gizmochina) assumed they would also roll out to older Galaxy devices with the update. But that won’t be the case as some Galaxy AI features may remain exclusive to the Galaxy S25 series.

Sally Jeong, EVP and Head of Framework R&D at Samsung MX, revealed some interesting details about the One UI 7 software in a recent interview published by Samsung Indonesia. She said that planning alone took more than two years before development even started. This is probably the biggest reason behind the significant delay in the release and rollout of One UI 7. 

During the interview, Sally was asked about the role of NPUs and GPUs in powering these new AI features on the Galaxy S25, and the response was quite surprising. Samsung’s AI features can be divided into two categories: those that rely on on-device hardware and those that rely on the cloud. Sally said the “Personal Data Engine” in One UI 7 that powers features like Now Brief requires advanced chipsets and hardware like the Snapdragon 8 Elite on the Galaxy S25 series.

Sally also mentioned that cloud-based AI features, such as Circle to Search, are easier to roll out to a wide range of Galaxy devices. But for deeper on-device AI experiences, powerful hardware is required. This means some AI features that require extensive on-device processing might not come to older Galaxy devices after installing One UI 7.

The Samsung executive didn’t specify which Galaxy AI feature won’t make the cut to older Galaxy devices, nor did she reveal details about the ineligible devices. Now Brief could be one of them, which has, so far, not been seen in the One UI 7 betas for the Galaxy S24 series, as spotted by Android Police.

We’ll get to know more as and when One UI 7 starts rolling out, which is already too delayed. Samsung still hasn’t announced the rollout plans. If leaks are anything to go by, we shouldn’t expect it anytime soon, at least before April. You can read more about it in our One UI 7 section.

The Samsung Galaxy S25 series offers some impressive photo editing features, and two that often get compared are the Galaxy AI Eraser and the Object Eraser. Both aim to remove unwanted elements from your photos, but they approach the task differently. So, which one is better? After spending considerable time experimenting with both, I’m here to share my insights and help you decide which tool is right for you.

Understanding the tools

Both the Galaxy AI Eraser and the Object Eraser can produce good results. However, the key difference lies in how they achieve those results. The Object Eraser, a more traditional approach, essentially tries to patch or clone pixels from the surrounding area to fill in the gap left by the removed object. It’s like a digital version of using the clone stamp tool in Photoshop.

The Galaxy AI Eraser, on the other hand, leverages the power of generative AI. It doesn’t just copy pixels; it understands the context of the image and generates new content to seamlessly replace the removed object. This makes a significant difference, especially when dealing with complex backgrounds or objects. 

Comparing the results

To illustrate the difference between the Galaxy AI Eraser and the Object Eraser, I’ve included three images above. The first is the original photo. The second demonstrates the result achieved with the Galaxy AI Eraser, and the third shows the image after using the Object Eraser. As you can see, the AI Eraser typically achieves a clean removal in just one or two attempts, while the Object Eraser often requires a few more steps to reach a comparable result. This efficiency highlights the power of generative AI.

The AI Eraser “understands” the image context in a way traditional object removal tools simply can’t, allowing it to seamlessly reconstruct the missing areas. It’s also important to note that because the AI Eraser generates new content, the resulting image is marked with a watermark indicating “AI-generated content.”

How to access Galaxy AI Eraser and Object Eraser

To access the Galaxy AI Eraser, open an image in the Gallery and tap the Galaxy AI icon. Then, draw a lasso around the area you want to edit. Once selected, you can move or delete it as needed. As can be seen in the first image of this post, it provides the “Sketch to Image” option, which can be used to leverage the power of generative AI to add new elements to the image.

Galaxy AI can also be used in a couple of other ways to enhance the image. When you open an image within the Gallery and swipe up, it will suggest some AI-driven options to modify the image. For instance, swiping up on the above image brought up four options:

• Remaster: Enhances the overall quality of the image, often improving brightness, contrast, and sharpness. 
• Live Effect: Adds dynamic effects to the image, such as light trails or motion blur. 
• Erase Reflections: Specifically targets and removes unwanted reflections from the image.
• Background Effect: Allows you to change or blur the background of the image.

Accessing the Object Eraser

The Object Eraser can be accessed by opening an image from the Gallery and hitting the four dots icon. Apart from erasing certain portions of the image, it provides some other options like Erase Shadows and Erase Reflections.  

Tips for Best Results

Here are a few tips to maximize your success with both the AI Eraser and Object Eraser:

• For complex removals, start with the AI Eraser. If the result isn’t perfect, you can then use the Object Eraser for fine-tuning.
• Zoom in for precise selections, especially when using the Object Eraser. Accurate selections are key for seamless results.
• Don’t be afraid to experiment! Both tools are forgiving—if you’re not happy with the result, you can undo the changes or save a copy. If you’ve made multiple edits to the same image, you can always tap “Revert to original” from the three-dot menu at the top-right corner to restore the original version.
• Remember that the AI Eraser generates new content, so the results might sometimes be unpredictable. Always review the edited image carefully.

Samsung’s Galaxy AI has recently expanded its language capabilities to include 16 languages. Global collaboration and partnerships with academic institutions have made this significant achievement possible. A key player in this development was the Samsung R&D Institute India-Bangalore (SRI-B), the company’s largest research center outside of Korea.

Samsung Galaxy AI now supports Hindi language

According to Samsung, SRI-B led the development of the Hindi AI model, a complex undertaking due to the language’s numerous dialects, tonal variations, and frequent mixing with English words. The team tackled this challenge by utilizing a combination of translated and transliterated data, along with the expertise of native linguists, to ensure the AI accurately captured the unique phonetic structure of Hindi.

The Vellore Institute of Technology played a crucial role in providing a vast amount of curated audio data, including conversational speech, words, and commands, which was essential for incorporating Hindi, the fourth most spoken language globally, into Galaxy AI.

The collaborative efforts extended beyond India, with SRI-B working closely with other Samsung research centres worldwide to bring Vietnamese, Thai, and Indonesian to the Galaxy AI platform. The expanded language support in Galaxy AI, accessible through features like Live Translate, Interpreter, Note Assist, and Browsing Assist, enables users to enhance their language skills even offline.

In related news, Samsung will hold its next Unpacked event on July 10 for multiple markets. The event is expected to see the arrival of several new devices, such as the Galaxy Z Fold 6, Z Flip 6, Galaxy Watch 7, Galaxy Watch Ultra, Galaxy Buds 3 series, and Galaxy Ring. One of the major highlights of the event will be that these devices are expected to offer an enhanced experience of the Galaxy AI, which was introduced with the Galaxy S24 series of smartphones at the beginning of this year.

Best Features in One UI 6.1

AI features are the major highlights of One UI 6.1, but there are some cool non-AI features you’ll also want to explore.

1. Circle to Search: Circle anything on your screen to search it using Google without opening a different app. The results appear on the screen.

2. Live Translate: Choose the language you and the person on the other end understand, and let Galaxy AI do the magic. The voice translation happens in real time.

3. AI Wallpaper: Generate stunning wallpapers for your home screen and lock screen using Galaxy AI. The limitation is that you can’t enter a prompt but must choose from the available keywords.

4. Generative Edit: Galaxy AI gives you suggestions to enhance photos and videos. You can move, remove, or resize people and objects in images and then fill in any missing places.

5. Notes Assist: The Notes app in One UI 6.1 can auto-format notes into headings and bullet points and summarise them. It can also help you translate notes and fix spelling mistakes.

6. Browser Assist: It can summarise long web pages into short paragraphs and bullet points to help you understand the content in a few words. You can also translate them into the language of your choice. Browser Assist only works with Samsung Browser.

7. Chat Assist: It can help you change the tone of your texts and check grammar and spelling. It works with any texting apps, such as Gmail, WhatsApp, and Telegram, but you must have the Samsung Keyboard as your default keyboard.

8. Battery Protection: One UI 6.1 offers three different levels of battery protection: Basic, Adaptive, and Maximum. Basic protection keeps your device charged between 95% and 100%, while Adaptive protection pauses charging while you’re asleep and completes it just before you wake up. Maximum protection limits the maximum charge to 80% for better battery health.

9. More Lock Screen Widgets: There are additional lock screen and AOD screen widgets in One UI 6.1. The new widgets include Weather, Samsung Health, Battery, Reminder, Calendar, and Clock.

The Galaxy AI feature is arriving on older devices with the One UI 6.1 update. It is set to roll out for Samsung smartphones and tablets that were previously launched. So here’s a list of all the eligible devices:

In a surprising turn of events, Samsung has now confirmed that select Galaxy smartphones from 2021 and 2022 will receive the One UI 6.1 update alongside some Galaxy AI features. The news comes after earlier rumors suggested these devices might miss out on the AI functionalities.

There is a caveat, however. The 2021 flagships, including the Galaxy S21 series, Galaxy Z Fold 3, and Galaxy Z Flip 3, will gain access to a limited set of AI features. 

These features are Google Circle Search and functionality likely referring to Chat Assist, codenamed “Magic Rewrite” in the announcement. Chat Assist allows users to adjust the tone and style of messages through the Samsung Keyboard.

The 2022 flagships, which include the Galaxy S22 series, Galaxy Z Fold 4, Galaxy Z Flip 4, and Galaxy Tab S8 series, will however receive a wider range of Galaxy AI features.

Yet, they will miss out on the Instant Slow-mo feature which enables users to slow down videos by long-pressing the screen. 

According to a Samsung Korea community moderator, the hardware limitations of the Exynos and Snapdragon chips used in these pre-2023 devices prevent them from supporting Instant Slow-mo.

Here’s a breakdown of the devices receiving One UI 6.1 with Galaxy AI features:

Wow, what is he/she wearing in the video? Which gadget is on his desk? How can I get the same product? If you ask the same questions while watching Instagram Reels or videos on YouTube or other platforms, thank Samsung for this AI feature.

To use the Circle to Search feature, long press the home button or the navigation bar button, and use your finger or s-pen to circle an object on your screen. You can also tap on a specific object to use it. The best part is that you get the results in the same window. There’s no need to leave the app.

You can also tap on text to copy or translate it. This feature has many use cases, and it’s definitely a great addition to One UI 6.1.

2. Powerful AI Image Editing

The One UI 6.1 upgrade has brought several amazing AI image editing features to the built-in Gallery app, helping you get a perfect shot.

Open the Gallery app, tap on an image, and hit the edit (pencil) icon. Now, click the Galaxy AI icon in the lower left side, and then the AI magic comes into the picture. 

You can rotate the image and tap Generate to fill the portion outside of the frame. It can take a few seconds. Galaxy AI was able to fill the remaining portions with accurate colours in most pictures during my tests.

Got an unwanted object ruining your photo? No worries. Galaxy AI can remove it and smartly fill the removed portion. You can even resize and move objects.

You can press and hold an object to save it as a sticker. You can also paste it to a different image.

3. Instant Slow-Mo Videos

Any video in the Gallery app can be instantly converted to a slow-mo video in One UI 6.1. AI does the magic here by analyzing existing frames and generating new frames to make the video look smoother.

To use this feature, open the Gallery app, tap on a video, and hold on to it. The video starts playing in slow-motion.

Tapping the pencil icon at the bottom gives you more options. You can choose from different slow-mo speeds, select a specific portion from the video to convert slow-mo or save the slow-mo video to your device.

4. Texting Gets a Major Upgrade

Samsung Keyboard gets interesting AI features with the One UI 6.1 update. You can now change the tone of your texts and check the spelling and grammar.

Want to sound like a cool guy or maintain a professional tone while chatting with your boss? Galaxy AI has got you covered.

Open a texting app (WhatsApp, Messages, etc.), and write in your style. Now, select the texts, tap on the AI icon in the keyboard layout, and choose Writing style. Galaxy AI will rewrite in multiple tones. Choose the one you like and send it to the other person.

When sending professional messages or emails, you can use the Spelling and grammar feature to not get embarrassed later.

These AI texting features only work with the Samsung Keyboard, so that’s a prerequisite. You can also use them on any texting apps, such as WhatsApp, Telegram, Gmail, LinkedIn, and Messages.

5. Real-Time Call Translation

Samsung phones with Galaxy AI features can translate calls on the go. This impressive AI feature translates your voice into a selected language and sends that AI-processed voice to the listener. All this happens in real time.

The tech community has highly praised this real-time call translation AI feature, as it can greatly remove the language barrier. What’s more interesting is that the other person doesn’t need a Samsung phone.

This feature is excellent for people and businesses with international clients.

6. Intelligent Notes App

I use Samsung Notes quite extensively, and the integration of AI features has made my life a lot easier. It can format my long notes into headers and bullets for better readability, summarise big paragraphs, and correct spelling.

The new Notes app in One UI 6.1 can also translate texts into different languages.

To use it, open the Notes app, tap on a note, and click the Galaxy AI icon to see the AI features.

If you take a lot of notes on the Samsung Notes app, you’ll love these AI integrations.

These are the 6 best AI features I like in One UI 6.1. I really wanted to include the Generative AI Wallpaper feature in this list, but it has very few options for creating a wallpaper of your choice.

One UI 6.1 also offers an Intelligent Samsung Browser that can summarise and translate web pages. It can save you a lot of time. The latest One UI skin also has a feature to show lock screen wallpaper on the Always on Display (AOD), but this feature is exclusive to the Galaxy S24 series and won’t come to older Galaxy devices.

Samsung introduced a range of AI features on the Galaxy S24 series as a part of the Galaxy AI umbrella. These features will also be included in the One UI 6.1 update for owners of the Galaxy S23 series, Galaxy S23 FE, Fold 5, Flip 5, and Tab S9 series.

But there were rumors that the Galaxy S22 series, Samsung’s 2022 flagship lineup, wouldn’t receive this AI upgrade. However, recent statements from Samsung executives suggest that there might still be hope for the S22 family.

TM Roh, President of Samsung’s Mobile Division, mentioned during a general shareholders’ meeting that the company is actively exploring ways to bring Galaxy AI to older devices.

The challenge seems to lie in the fact that while some Galaxy AI features depend on cloud processing, others rely on on-device processing. And the Galaxy S22 series might lack the necessary hardware capabilities to support these AI features.

However, despite sharing the same chipsets as the S22, the S23 FE is expected to receive Galaxy AI features with the One Ui 6.1 update. So chipset shouldn’t specifically be an issue for the Galaxy S22 series, although Roh didn’t delve into the specifics.

Still Roh emphasized that overcoming these limitations will require “a lot of effort,” but Samsung is committed to investing resources to make it happen.

Whether the Galaxy S22 series will eventually gain these AI features remains uncertain. But learning that Samsung is not ruling out the hope entirely is certainly promising.

In another interesting development, TM Roh also confirmed that Samsung is working on its innovative foldable and rollable devices. 

Roh’s statements suggest that Samsung is evaluating the commercial viability of such form factors and working to secure necessary patents for their development to progress.

Samsung Galaxy S24 users may soon find themselves facing charges for certain AI functions, as reports indicate that Samsung-authorized experience stores in China have received notices about the same. The notice specifies that AI features, in collaboration with WPS, will start to incur charges after July 30, 2024.

You’ll need to pay for WPS AI features on the Galaxy S24 series after July 30

Users who purchase the Galaxy S24 before this date and login to WPS can avail themselves of 180 WPS AI rights for free, valid for seven days. However, after July 30, users will need to subscribe to continue using these AI functions, with pricing options ranging from 118 yuan (~$16) per year to 15 yuan (~$2) per month for continuous monthly subscription.

The collaboration between Samsung and WPS for AI functions brings about this new charging model, signaling a shift in how these features are monetized. Notably, other partnerships with Meitu and Baidu did not receive similar charging notifications, suggesting a selective approach to fee implementation. Additionally, some AI functions independent of third-party applications remain unaffected by these changes, demonstrating a nuanced approach to charging users for AI services. However, both Samsung and WPS didn’t reveal anything about the charging policies, when asked about the charging notices.

The Galaxy AI features of the Samsung Galaxy S24 series that are designed to enhance user experience include AI-driven input, translation, recording, note-taking, and camera functionalities. Most of these AI functions in China are provided by domestic manufacturers like Baidu, contributing to a tailored experience for the market. For instance, Baidu’s domestic Wenxin large language model enables advanced call and translation functions, intelligent summarization, and innovative search capabilities through gesture-based interactions.

Furthermore, Samsung has introduced a newly upgraded Note Assist to Samsung Notes, enhancing productivity and convenience for users. This feature enables content translation, refinement, summarization, and intelligent typesetting. Moreover, real-time speech-to-text transcription, multi-lingual translation, and speaker differentiation capabilities are integrated into the device-side AI, facilitating efficient communication and organization. The core Galaxy AI features such as Live Translate have not yet entered the era of subscription-based AI services. We will need to see if Samsung decides to charge for the server-side Galaxy AI features at some point in the future.

Photo Assist provides tools for editing photos, such as removing objects, resizing images, and erasing reflections. The company has stated that the Galaxy S23 series (including the S23 FE), Galaxy Z Fold 5, Z Flip 5, and Galaxy Tab S9 will eventually receive these AI capabilities. Looks like the company has taken the first step to preparing this rollout for smartphones.

The company has seemingly updated the Samsung On-Device Resource app on the Galaxy Store whose description suggests new AI features will make use of it.

The app, which previously managed speech-to-text functionality for Bixby and the Samsung Keyboard, now provides the processing power for several of the S24’s new AI features. 

For instance, the app includes features for real-time call translation and converting voice recordings to text. Now that the app is available on older flagships like the Z Fold 5 and S23 means that the One UI 6.1 update might be coming soon.

Whether Samsung will include these AI features directly within the One UI 6.1 update or release them separately remains to be seen. 

However, things don’t look promising for users of the Galaxy S22 series or older Samsung flagship devices who want to access the new Galaxy AI features. The new Samsung On-Device Resource app update is reportedly only available on the mentioned older models, leaving the S22 series potentially without access.

Though the Galaxy S24 series arrives with some notable hardware upgrades, the primary highlight of these smartphones is Galaxy AI. Samsung has introduced a range of useful software features utilizing artificial intelligence.

One of these features is ‘Instant Slow-mo’. It can convert any regular video into a slow-motion video. 

This feature has been now confirmed for a handful of older phones and tablets.

In an official community post, Samsung has revealed that the Instant Slow-mo feature will be available for the following older devices.

• Galaxy S23 Ultra
• Galaxy S23 Plus
• Galaxy S23
• Galaxy Z Fold 5
• Galaxy Z Flip 5
• Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra
• Galaxy Tab S9 Plus
• Galaxy Tab S9

Additionally, the company has disclosed that the feature will be compatible with more video types. Currently, it is limited to 8-bit videos ranging from 720p to 8K resolution. Also, only the .mp4 file format is supported for now.

But shortly, it will be not only compatible with 10-bit videos but also with 480p resolution and .mov extension.

Samsung says that the feature works only on devices featuring at least a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC or a newer flagship chip. Therefore, don’t expect it to arrive on even older smartphones and tablets.

The Instant Slow-mo feature is expected to roll out for the aforementioned devices with the One UI 6.1 update. Previously, the company had revealed that the latest One UI will be pushed to eligible devices by the end of H1 2024.

Users who have already paid $799 for their phone might be disappointed if they lose critical functions a year later, but that is currently a concern for 2025.

Samsung‘s latest Galaxy S24 series isn’t just about its powerful features – it’s also introducing exciting new AI capabilities, known as Galaxy AI. This collection includes various AI-driven features like Circle Search, Live Translation, and a Chat Assistant. 

Samsung has announced that this new technology is powered by Google Cloud‘s advanced AI. Specifically, the S24 series will use Google’s Gemini Pro and Imagen 2 on Vertex AI, leveraging the power of the cloud for enhanced performance on their smartphones.

Gemini Pro is particularly adept at handling and integrating different types of data, such as text, images, and videos. It will be embedded in native apps like Notes, Voice Recorder, and Keyboard, enabling them to improve over time. 

Besides these capabilities, Gemini Pro ensures critical aspects like security and privacy are well managed, as stated in the press release.

The Imagen 2 on the S24 series is a top-notch Diffusion model from Google for turning text into images. It’s used in the S24’s Gallery app for smart photo editing.

Samsung is also testing Google’s Gemini Ultra, a powerful tool for complex tasks, and using Gemini Nano, a smaller version for everyday phone tasks. This is similar to what the Pixel 8 Pro does, like giving smart replies to messages and improving videos and photos taken in the dark. Samsung is one of the first to try Gemini Ultra, which will later be available to more developers and businesses.

Janghyun Yoon, the Corporate EVP and Head of the Software Office of Mobile eXperience Business at Samsung expressed his excitement about the Galaxy S24 series being the first to incorporate Gemini Pro.

Google Cloud’s CEO, Thomas Kurian, highlighted that Samsung developers would benefit from the platform’s high-end infrastructure and versatility, which allows them to bring these AI features to Samsung users.

Samsung has finally confirmed that its next Galaxy Unpacked event will be held on January 17 in multiple markets. The event will see the arrival of the Galaxy S24 series of flagship phones and the Galaxy AI. Samsung Galaxy S24 series preservation benefits confirmed

Samsung has confirmed pre-reservation benefits for the upcoming Galaxy S24 series in India. Customers can pay a fee of Rs 1,999 (~$24, refundable amount) to pre-reserve the Galaxy S24 series and unlock extra benefits worth Rs 5000 (~$60). By doing so, individuals can be among the first to own the Galaxy S24 series and may also receive early delivery through Samsung Live.

The benefits include an upgrade program for old phones with the best exchange value, getting devices in special colors, and a Smart Club membership offering a Rs 5,000 welcome voucher and 2 percent loyalty points via the Samsung Shop App. Additionally, there’s a “Buy More, Save More” promotion, providing a 5 precent discount on the total purchase when two or more eligible products are bought together.

As per reports, the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24 Plus will be available with either the Exynos 2400 or the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip, depending on the market. On the other hand, the Galaxy S24 Ultra is expected to feature the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 in all markets.

The Galaxy S24 series will run on One UI 6.1-based Android 14, which will bring support for Samsung’s generative AI feature, dubbed Galaxy AI.
