Most phones with failing displays usually end up sitting in a drawer, traded in, or eventually recycled. But one Pixel 8 owner decided to do something much more interesting after his phone developed the now-infamous vertical pink line issue.

Instead of throwing the device away, the Reddit user repurposed the Pixel 8 into a compact retro gaming console connected directly to a TV, complete with wired controllers, active cooling, and a proper console-style interface.

According to the post, the phone itself was still fully functional apart from the damaged display. The owner reportedly approached Google for a repair, but the request was declined. Since the hardware was otherwise perfectly usable, he decided to give it a second life instead.

The setup itself is surprisingly clean. A basic powered USB hub connects the Pixel 8 to external controllers, a mouse, HDMI output, and even a small 50mm cooling fan mounted behind the phone. The fan continuously pushes air onto the rear panel to keep temperatures under control during gaming sessions.

That cooling solution actually matters quite a bit here. Google’s Tensor G3 chip is powerful enough for retro emulation, but it is also known for running relatively warm under sustained workloads. Active cooling helps reduce thermal throttling and keeps performance more stable over longer play sessions.

For the software side, the user installed EmulationStation Desktop Edition (ES-DE), which gives the whole setup a much more console-like feel. Games are organized with cover art, metadata, and menus that resemble a dedicated retro gaming machine rather than a phone running emulators.

The Pixel 8 reportedly handles classic systems comfortably, including older 16-bit and 32-bit platforms, while also managing some more demanding emulators depending on the title and settings used.

One of the more interesting parts of the project is how naturally modern smartphones fit into this kind of role now. With USB-C video output support finally enabled on Pixel devices, a phone with a damaged screen can still function almost like a tiny gaming PC when connected to external peripherals.

Honestly, the setup looks far more polished than most people would expect from what started as a partially broken smartphone. And in a way, it also highlights how much processing power modern flagship phones still retain even after they stop being practical as daily drivers.

2. Google Pixel 8

The Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro give you seven years of software updates, including Android OS, feature drops, and security maintenance releases. The Galaxy S22, on the other hand, only offers four Android upgrades.

The Pixel 8 models have a larger screen with more resolutions and a higher peak brightness. They are powered by Google’s in-house Tensor G3 chip, which has similar performance to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 (the chip inside the Galaxy S22) but has better machine learning capabilities.

3. Motorola Moto G Stylus (2024)

The Moto G Stylus (2024) is a cheaper alternative to the Galaxy S22 Ultra with stylus support. It has a slightly smaller display than the S22 Ultra but bigger than the vanilla S22. However, to bring the cost down, Motorola hasn’t added any protection to either side, and the device also lacks any IP rating.

The Moto G Stylus, though, runs a more recent version of Android out of the box. It’s powered by a Snapdragon 6 Gen 1, which is popular among entry-level phones. The Motorola device has a decent rear camera setup, featuring a 50MP primary sensor and a 13MP ultrawide sensor. For selfies, it has a 32MP camera that can record up to 1080p videos.

The smartphone has decent connectivity features. The battery comes in at 5,000mAh, which should last a day, at least, and supports faster charging than the Galaxy S22.

OnePlus 11 (full review) is another solid alternative to the Galaxy S22. It rocks a more powerful chip, Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, and a bigger AMOLED screen with a higher resolution. The OnePlus smartphone also comes with faster storage and a more recent version of Android OS.

The Hasselblad-tuned camera setup on the OnePlus 11 includes a 50MP primary camera, a 32MP telephoto camera with 2x optical zoom, and a 48MP ultrawide lens. The selfie camera has a 16MP resolution. While the rear cameras allow 8K recording, the selfie camera is limited up to 1080p video recording.

Apple and Samsung have been fierce competitors for years, and hence, it makes sense to include iPhones in the list. And it’s the only non-Android brand if you want to make the switch.

Pixel devices have lacked the support for display output via USB-C for years. Now with the Android 14 QPR3 Beta 2 update, Google has finally enabled DisplayPort Alternate Mode on the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. It enables you to cast your phone’s display on a bigger screen.

Although most of the Pixel devices from the past have offered USB-C 3.1 or above (the hardware requirement to transmit video via the USB-C port) Google has kept the feature disabled up until this point. Back in October last year it was possible to use the feature on Pixel 8 through projects like GrapheneOS. Now Google has finally baked the feature to a stage where you don’t need to modify the system to use DisplayPort Alternate Mode.

When you connect your Pixel 8 or Pixel 8 Pro to an external display, a prompt should pop up asking whether you’d like to mirror to an external display. if you go ahead, the contents of your smartphone screen appear in the middle of the monitor with the wallpaper filling the rest. Reportedly, a revamped “Desktop Mode” interface is under development and is currently hidden behind flags. Meanwhile, older Pixel devices can still enable and use this DisplayPort feature through Magisk module. The process involves installing Magisk Manager, downloading the DisplayPort Magisk Module, and flashing it via the tool. You reboot the phone and you should be good to go.

Notably, Samsung devices with the required hardware have had this feature since 2017. It is called Samsung DeX and offers a more desktop-like interface. Besides the use of USB-C, Samsung has even managed to transmit the data wirelessly, making it even more appealing to one who needs it. Android’s built-in desktop mode has reportedly been under development since Android 10. When or whether Google will offer an equivalent still remains a question.

When Samsung unveiled its flagship Galaxy S24 series earlier this month, one of the announcement that caught everybody’s attention was the Circle to Search feature. Google already confirmed this feature’s arrival in the surprise January Pixel Feature Drop update. Now, the search giant’s flagship Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro phones are getting the Circle to Search feature as confirmed by the company in an official blog post.

Google says that Circle to Search on the Pixel 8 series is now rolling out. Multiple users on Reddit also confirmed that their Pixel 8 and 8 Pro units are receiving the new feature. Some also revealed that Google is not releasing any firmware update. The feature magically appears so it seems to be a server-side switch. Notably, it is also available in multiple regions. 

It also appears that users won’t get any indication if Circle to Search is live on their Pixel 8 and 8 Pro units. One way to find this out is to long press on the home button or navigation bar on their devices. Users can simply start circling or highlighting, scribbling, or tapping the elements/items on the screen. This will throw up search results specific to what the user intends to search. Google also demonstrated in its blog post that Circle to Search can solve queries of items seen on social media to find out more about them. Another use case is easily comparing options of two restaurants by highlighting one of the names while texting and without having to leave the screen.  

The Circle to Search feature makes the process of searching specific things in visual content seamless and convenient. It eliminates the need to take the image and screenshot over to the Google App. It’s also easier and better to use than Google Lens.

Google announced its Pixel 8 series smartphones with a number of new camera features. Notably, some of these features are reserved exclusively for the Pro model, including manual focus, shutter speed adjustments, and ISO controls – or so Google claims.

Interestingly, Kamila Wojciechowska, a well-known tipster shared that she was able to run the Pixel 8 Pro’s exclusive camera features on a Pixel 7 Pro by modding the Pixel 8’s Google Camera APK.

In fact, she made a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter) showcasing those camera features on her 7 Pro. She also mentioned that these features “fully work on any Tensor Pixel, from the 6 to the 7 Pro.” That means, even if you own a Pixel that’s a couple of years old, you can use these features effortlessly with a modded Google Camera Apk.

Some of the camera features that Wojciechowska was able to enable on the Pixel 7 Pro include manual focus with focus peaking, switching between lenses, and changing shutter speed and ISO. 

Focus peaking is Google’s new feature that uses highlighted lines to indicate what’s in focus before you take a photo. But according to Wojciechowska, unlike the Pixel 8 Pro, which lets you set the shutter speed as high as 16 seconds without Night Sight, her Pixel 7 Pro was only able to support shutter speeds of up to 8 seconds—although the camera UI shows 16 seconds. 

Likewise, you can also control both the shutter speed and ISO manually or choose to tweak one of them while the other option remains automatic.

Modding Google Camera is not a new trend in the Android community, as people often prefer Google’s camera app due to its software features and post-processing algorithm. So, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Pixel 8 Pro’s exclusive camera features even on Samsung or Xiaomi phones in the future.

Anyway, Google is also adding some new camera features to both the Pixel 8 (Amazon)  and Pixel 8 Pro (Amazon), such as Zoom Enhance, improved Magic Eraser, Audio Magic Eraser, and Best Take. These features will be available on October 12.

Despite the outstanding photo quality of the Google Pixel 7 series of smartphones, Google’s flagships have long suffered from complaints of poorer battery life and cellular stability than their competitors like Apple, Xiaomi and OnePlus. And the main culprit has always been assumed to be Google’s power-intensive Tensor chipsets manufactured on Samsung’s foundry.

With the recent release of the Google Pixel 8 series this week, Google fans were curious by whether the new Tensor G3 chipset would bring better battery life to the Pixel lineup. However, based on the small fine print on Google’s “Compare Phones” section on its website, it is revealed that the Google Pixel 8 series not only has the same bad battery life as the Pixel 7 series but is also worse than the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro that were released 2 years ago.

As shown in the official fine print above, the latest Google Pixel 8 and 8 Pro’s battery lasted an average of 31 hours from Google’s own internal testing, which makes both devices on par with the Pixel 7a, Pixel 7, and Pixel 7 Pro from last year. In addition, when compared to the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro launched 2 years back, the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro’s battery life is worse because they only last 3 hours shorter than Google’s own Pixel 6 at 34 hours. We compiled a table below to view Google’s claims of average battery life in its Pixel lineup in descending order, alongside the battery capacity of each Pixel smartphone.

For context, external testers like TechDroider on YouTube, have tested the battery life of last year’s Google Pixel 7 Pro against the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, OnePlus 11, Xiaomi 13 Ultra, and Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro Max. Their results on battery life are as shown in Table 2.

As shown, the Pixel 7 Pro is significantly lagging behind its competitors in the battery life department of the premium smartphone market by around 2 hours in battery life. And the battery life result of 8 hours and 13 mins is much shorter than Google’s official claim of 31 hours on the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro.

If Google’s claims of the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro’s battery are true, then the Pixel 8 series has the same bad battery life of “31 hours” as the Pixel 7 and possibly worse battery life than the Pixel 6 series as well.

The highly anticipated Google Pixel 8 series was finally announced after months of leaks and rumors. Now, a new teardown video for the Pixel 8 model has surfaced mere hours after its launch. The video offers us a close look at the new flagship device’s internal, so let’s have a look.

Google Pixel 8 Teardown

The teardown for the Search Engine giant’s Pixel 8 was shared by PBKreviews on YouTube. In the video, the smartphone is disassembled in front of the camera. This also offers a tutorial on how to open up the device. We can see the rear camera sensors once the rear panel is removed, along with the graphite film that helps in dissipating heat. Right underneath this layer is the battery pack, which was a bit tricky to remove due to the adhesives.

Although, the Pixel 8’s camera models were relatively easier to remove. PBKreviews even managed to take out the motherboard of the new smartphone. The YouTuber noted that removing the back panel without damaging the device is difficult. He gave the Pixel 8 a repairability score of 7 out of 10. This score isn’t bad since it means that self repairs are possible, however, it isn’t recommended for inexperienced beginners.

Talking about the device itself, the Pixel 8 is equipped with Google’s Tensor G3 chipset, which is paired with 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB of internal storage. It sports a 6.2-inch OLED display that has a Full HD+ resolution and 120Hz refresh rate. The rear features a 50-megapixel dual camera setup, while the front houses a 10.5-megapixel selfie shooter. Google held its annual hardware event today. As usual, the company debuted the flagship next-generation Pixel 8 series and the Pixel Watch 2. Leaks and rumors revealed pretty much everything about the new arrivals leading up to today’s launch event. The Pixel 8 and 8 Pro arrive as the successors to the last year’s models. The standard variant packs incremental upgrades over its predecessor while the pro model gets some significant upgrades. In this post, let’s take a look at the Pixel 8. 

Google Pixel 8 specifications

The Pixel 8 retains the same design as the previous Pixel phones. However, it has slightly rounded corners and an overall smaller footprint. The device features a horizontal camera bridge with a pill-shaped cutout for the rear camera sensors. On the front, the Pixel 8 features a 6.17-inch OLED display bearing an FHD+ resolution. It offers a 120Hz refresh rate, 2,000 nits peak brightness, and HDR support. There is a centre-aligned punch-hole cutout. 

Google’s Pixel devices are widely known for their photography power. The Pixel 8 has dual rear cameras comprising a 50MP Samsung ISOCELL GN2 primary sensor paired with a 12MP IMX386 ultra-wide-angle unit that also offers Macro focus. There is also an upgraded ToF sensor. Up front, it retains the same 10.5MP selfie snapper. The smartphone is capable of recording up to 8K videos. It packs various features including staggered HDR, Face Unblur, super res zoom, audio magic eraser, and more. 

Under the hood, the Pixel 8 houses Google’s proprietary Tensor G3 chipset based on 3nm architecture. There is also Titan M2 security chip. The smartphone packs 8GB LPDDR5X RAM and up to 256GB internal storage. The retail box of the upcoming Google Pixel 8 was spotted on a YouTube Shorts video (Via TechOutlook). Looking at the leaked image, the retail box confirms the Hazel color option. The packaging also offers us a look at the device from the front, back, and side. The long visor-like rear camera module with the dual camera setup is in clear view, while the front houses a center-aligned punch hole cutout for the selfie camera.

The Pixel 8 retail box is for the Hazel color option, which features 128GB of storage. The official parameters also reveal that the upcoming smartphone will sport a 6.2-inch display (120Hz OLED panel), support 5G sub-6 connectivity, and carry the G9BQD model number. The retail box will come with a charging cable and a Quick Switch adapter as well. Notably, this leak also arrived after we reported on the Pixel 8 Pro unboxing images being leaked.

Based on what we know so far, the Pixel 8 will be equipped with the Tenso G3 SoC under the hood. Google is set to launch the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro on October 4. Leaks about the devices have been circulating for months, and a recently leaked promo video has also revealed some new camera features. Now, a new report suggests that the prices of both devices will increase in the US market.

According to a report by 9to5Google, the Pixel 8 will start at $699, while the Pixel 8 Pro will start at $999. This represents a $100 increase across the board, compared to the starting prices of the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro. Previously, a report suggested that Google is also expected to increase the price of Pixel 8 series devices in Europe.

The price increase comes after Google also increased the price of the Pixel 7a by $50 compared to the Pixel 6a. However, in the case of the Pixel 7a, the price increase was justified by a number of significant hardware upgrades, such as a new camera sensor, a 90Hz display, and wireless charging.

Pixel 8 and 8 Pro are launching on October 4 during the “Made by Google” event. Leaks and rumors have revealed all there is to know about the new smartphones, except for the price. That changes now, as a new report is here with European prices of the upcoming smartphone. It also shares the storage and color options of the two phones.

The Tech Outlook reports, based on info from tipster Paras Guglani, that the regular Pixel 8 will hit the European market in 128GB and 256GB storage options. Google might offer it in Hazel, Obsidian, Rose, and Mint shades. The 128GB model is priced at €874.25 with 23% VAT, while the 256GB version costs €949.30 with 23% VAT.

As per the outlet, the Pixel 8 Pro will be made available in 128GB, 256GB, or a generous 512GB storage option. You will be able to choose from 4 colors, including Bay, Obsidian, Porcelain, and Mint. In the European market, the base variant with 128GB of storage, inclusive of the 23% VAT, is slated to be priced at €1,235.72. The high-end 512GB model will be offered at a price point of €1,461.24 with the 23% VAT. Meanwhile, the 256GB storage variant will be available for €1,309.95, which includes 23% VAT.

As for the specifications, the Pixel 8 is expected to feature a slightly smaller 6.17-inch display. It will offer a resolution of 2400 x 1080 pixels and a maximum brightness of 1400 nits. Additionally, it will include a variable refresh rate that ranges from 10Hz to 120Hz. The folks at 9to5Google citing one of their sources reveal that Google might offer a longer software support for the upcoming Pixel 8 series. The search giant is planning to deliver five years of OS updates for its devices powered by a Tensor processor. The company’s proprietary chipset is already capable of receiving five years of software updates. However, it remains to be seen if the Pixel 6 will indeed receive two years of additional OS updates compared to the guaranteed three years when it launched. 

With the potential extended software support, Google will surpass Samsung’s four-year software update policy. Smartphones don’t become obsolete as many new features are introduced through app updates and Google Play Services. However, longer software support will take Google close to Apple’s policy. For instance, “Hey Google, Reply.” This will trigger a message type command, and using your voice to text, you can draft a message and send it to the person by saying their name. This is a helpful feature because you don’t need to touch the phone to reply. It saves you from the hassle of unlocking the phone and typing to reply.

Rahman also says that it’s not certain if this feature will be there when the phone is first launched. But this reply feature might come later on in an update for Google Pixel phones.

In the renders published by OnLeaks, Mishaal Rahman noticed that the SIM tray of the device was missing. Rahman mentions that if we look at the previous renders published by OnLeaks, for example, the Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 both showed the SIM card slots on the phone’s left side. This means the device might be eSIM only, at least in some regions. For those unaware, the iPhone is the primary device in the US market that uses eSIM. However, Rahman says we should take this information with a grain of salt as the renders could be missing details.

Last month, Android Authority revealed key details about the display and camera specifications of the Google Pixel 8 series of smartphones. In a new report, the publication has revealed new information regarding the battery size and charging capabilities of the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro.

Pixel 8 series battery size, charging speeds

Citing a Google insider as the source, the publication revealed that the Pixel 8 will pack a 4,480mAh battery and support 24W wired charging. In comparison, the Pixel 7 packs a smaller 4,270mAh battery with 20W wired charging.

The Pixel 8 Pro will arrive with a 4,950mAh battery and offer 27W wired charging. To recall, the predecessor model featured a 4,926mAh battery with 23W wired charging. Like the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro, their successors will continue to offer 20W and 23W wireless charging, respectively.

The report also reveals that with the inclusion of the Broadcom BCM4398 chip, the Pixel 8 series will support Wi-Fi 7. The new-generation Wi-Fi connectivity offers faster speeds, stability, and low latency. Furthermore, the ultra-wideband will be available on the Pixel 8 Pro, but the Pixel 8 will not receive it.

Google Pixel devices suffer from limited availability compared to other manufacturers, leading consumers to either buy them from unofficial sources at higher prices or import them without warranty or support. Nevertheless, there are indications that Google might broaden the distribution of Pixel devices.

The publication reported that by comparing the list of languages available on the Pixel 8 and Pixel 7 in the electronic warranty terms, it can be speculated that the official distribution list for the Pixel 8 might expand to include a few more countries like Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, and Portugal.

The report has no information on the launch date of the Pixel 8 series. In all likelihood, it may debut in October, like its previous Pixel phones.

Google is expected to launch its next-generation flagship Pixel 8 series later in October this year. The Pixel 8 and 8 Pro will arrive as the successors to the last year’s Pixel 7 series. Leaks and rumors have started gathering pace about the upcoming Pixel flagships. Now, in a new development, an interesting new feature of the Pixel 8 series has surfaced. 

Pixel 8 series to support external displays 

Android Authority citing a source inside Google reported that the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro may gain the ability to support external displays. This could potentially transform the phones into desktop replacements. 

The report reveals that the feature could work through the default USB-C port. The Pixel 8 series will come with support for USB DisplayPort’s Alternate Mode. Basically, it allows devices to connect to displays via USB-C. USB-C plugs are said to have a lot of connector pins and were designed with versatility and extendibility in mind. They are also able to transmit massive amounts of data. 

The most common alternate mode standards are ThunderBolt and DisplayPort for sharing a device’s screen onto an external and potential display. While USB-C can also support the DisplayPort alternate mode without ThunderBolt, it is said to be less versatile but still a useful option for devices that don’t offer a way to output high-resolution video to an external display. Smartphones do not have the space to accommodate a dedicated HDMI display port. Hence, the USB-C charging port doubling down on its functionality will be quite interesting.

The publication also dived into Google’s code base stating that Google might have the feature in mind for the Pixel 8. Additionally, as per a spotting by Mishaal Rahman, recent Android 14 betas have support for USB-C DisplayPort Alternate Mode and introduced improvements to the desktop mode that was present in the launcher code. 

The support for external displays is not a new feature. Samsung’s DeX mode has been quite popular allowing a desktop experience via a USB-C cable or HDMI adapter. Motorola also has its ‘Ready For’ feature that is similar to DeX. Microsoft also had a mode in its Lumia series phones.

The former will arrive in four color options namely, Haze, Jade, Licorice, and Peony. Meanwhile, the latter will also come in four variants that will include Jade and Licorice as well as Porcelain and Sky options. Keep in mind that there’s a chance that not all of these will be widely launched and availability might also depend on different regions.

Looking at the leaked wallpapers, it appears that Google has decided to retain its wallpaper themes that revolve around different minerals. In other words, it could likely be the work of Andrew Zuckerman again. Based on the historical pattern of Google’s Pixel smartphone launches, it seems likely that the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro will be unveiled during the month of October this year. Earlier this month, Android Authority released a report to reveal the camera specifications of the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. In a new report, the same publication leaked the display specifications of the Pixel 8 duo.

Google Pixel 8 series display specifications (rumored)

The leak reveals that the Pixel 8 will be smaller than the Pixel 8’s 6.3-inch screen. The Pixel 8 Pro, on the other hand, will have a 6.7-inch display like the Pixel 7 Pro. However, while the Pixel 7 Pro came with a curved-edge screen, its successor will have a flat screen. The report further states that the display design of the Pixel 8 series exhibits a slightly less square shape compared to its predecessors, with corners that are slightly more rounded.

To recall, the Pixel 7’s flat 6.3-inch OLED panel offered a Full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels, a 90Hz refresh rate, and 417ppi pixel density. The Pixel 7 Pro featured a 6.71-inch OLED curved-edge display that offers a Quad HD+ resolution of 1440 x 3120 pixels, a 120Hz refresh rate, and 512 ppi pixel density. Both displays support up to 1,000 nits of brightness.

As per the new report, the Pixel 8 will come with a 6.17-inch screen that will offer a Full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels, a higher refresh rate of 120 Hz, a 427 ppi pixel density, and up to 1,400 nits of brightness. For the Pixel 8, Google will be using displays supplied by Samsung and OLED, whereas the Pro model will have display panels from Samsung.

Google Tensor G3 chip performance still falls behind Qualcomm & Apple

Just recently, we had covered a report that hinted at the Search Engine giant’s new Tensor G3 offering notable performance upgrades on the Pixel 8 series. These improvements were in the form of a new redesigned architecture and upgrades to the AI and machine learning capabilities. However, the sighting on the popular GeekBench platform shows that its performance overall is still underwhelming. Looking at the benchmark listing, we can see that the Tensor G3 managed to receive 1,186 points in the single core test and 3,809 points in the multi core tests.

The GeekBench listing was shared by tipster Revegnus who recently shared the specs of the upcoming MediaTek Dimensity 8300 SoC. Furthermore, the Tensor G3 offers a base frequency of 2.15GHz on its 9 cores. These 9 cores consists of 4 cores clocked at 2.15GHz, 4 cores on 3.45GHz, and 1 core that has a 3.02GHz clock speed. There are rumors that the Tensor G3 is based off of the Exynos 2200 SoC from Samsung.

If this news is true, it would seem that Google’s next gen chipset is still around 2 to 3 generations behind other chipsets from tech giants like Apple, MediaTek, and Qualcomm. The tipster himself claimed that this proves why Samsung Foundry is still not up to par. This is likely in comparison to the world’s largest contract chipmaker, TSMC. Keep in mind that synthetic benchmarks aren’t exactly a great indicator of real life performance and user experience and only offers us a glimpse of its actual capabilities.

Google Tensor G3: Everything You Need to Know

The upcoming Tensor G3 has a major upgrade in its CPU block. It is completely redesigned and uses the latest 2022 ARMv9 cores. Google is moving away from the previous generation’s 4+2+2 core setup and adopting a unique nine-core configuration for the G3. This setup consists of four Cortex-A510s, four Cortex-A715s, and a single Cortex-X3. This is designed to provide a significant performance boost.

The chip also includes ARM’s advanced Memory Tagging Extensions, which are designed to help protect devices from memory-based attacks. Additionally, the Pixel 8 will only run 64-bit apps. One of the most significant changes is the addition of a new digital signal processor (DSP). Another major change is the addition of a new UFS controller. UFS stands for Universal Flash Storage, and it is the type of storage used in most smartphones.

The new UFS controller supports UFS 4.0 storage, which is the latest and fastest version of UFS. Google is expected to announce the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro in October of this year. Ahead of the expected launch, the Pixel 8 has received approval from the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC). The certification has seemingly revealed the fast charging capabilities of the device.

Google Pixel 8 bags WPC certification

As can be seen in the screenshot, the WPC certification confirms that the Google device with model number GKWS6 will debut in the market with the Pixel 8 marketing name. As per the listing, the Pixel 8 will not support the latest Qi2 wireless charging, but the older Qi wireless charging standard (version 1.2.4).

The listing reveals that the Pixel 8 will support 12W wireless charging, like the Pixel 7. As can be seen, the listing also has an image of the device, which looks quite similar to its predecessor.

So far, reports have revealed that the Pixel 8 will have a 6.16-inch OLED panel that will support a Full HD+ resolution of 2268 x 1080 pixels. On the other hand, the Pixel 8 Pro will have a 6.7-inch OLED panel with curved edges. The Pixel 8 duo will be powered by the Tensor G3 chip.

The Pixel 8 Pro is said to be equipped with a Samsung GN2 camera, which has a 1/1.12-inch sensor size and a 50-megapixel resolution. The Pro model is also said to be equipped with a built-in thermometer for measuring the temperature of the body and objects. The other details of the Pixel 8 series are under wraps.

Smartphone screen size has been increasing and it’s now almost impossible to find a flagship smartphone that is comparatively smaller in size. But now, amid rumors of a foldable smartphone from Google, it appears that the company is on track to launch a smaller phone.

As per the latest leak coming through Ross Young, the upcoming flagship smartphone from the Mountain View-based tech giant, the Google Pixel 8, will have a smaller display panel.

It is said that the Google Pixel 8 will feature a 6.16-inch display, which is smaller compared to the 6.7-inch display on the Pixel 8 Pro. With the 6.16-inch panel, we expect the company to market it and list it as a 6.2-inch panel.

Further, it is revealed that the display for the upcoming Pixel 8 lineup will be sourced from Samsung, which isn’t surprising given that company’s dominance in the market. It is said that the panel production could begin in the month of May, i.e. next month.

Google Pixel 8 and 8 Pro flagship smartphones are expected to go official in October, but ahead of the official launch, we expect the company to showcase the devices at the Google I/O if the company continues to do what it did last year.

When it comes to their smartphones, Google is quite bad at keeping secrets. The upcoming Pixel 7a recently emerged on eBay revealing its design, while popular tipster OnLeaks revealed 5K renders of the upcoming Pixel 8, and Pixel 8 Pro. It is worth noting that Google will likely be launching the Pixel 8 series in Autumn. Considering we are still in Spring, there is quite some time left in the official announcement.

Now, OnLeaks has shared a close-up renders of both the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, comparing their designs to the Pixel 7 series devices. Upon comparison of photos, it is evident that the Pixel 8 has a wider corner radius than the Pixel 7, resulting in a rounder appearance that is closer to the Pixel 5. Although slightly thicker at 0.2mm, the Pixel 8 has a smaller overall footprint of 150.5 x 70.8 x 8.9mm compared to the Pixel 7 at 155.6 x 73.2 x 8.7mm.

Similarly, the Pixel 8 Pro also boasts a more prominent corner radius than its predecessor, the Pixel 7 Pro. However, the curved display of the Pixel 7 Pro creates an illusion of thinner display bezels, while also contributing to a thinner frame. It is worth noting that both the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro are expected to utilize the Tensor G3, which has been subject to separate leaks.

There is speculation that the Pixel 8 series will be equipped with staggered HDR technology, enabling the capture of both short and long exposure scenes simultaneously. Additionally, the Pro model is rumored to feature an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint scanner.

Earlier today, the Pixel 8 Pro was spotted in leaked CAD-based renders. Now, the standard Pixel 8 has also appeared in leaked renders shared by reliable tipster Onleaks. The images give us a first look at the smartphone. The Pixel 8 series is expected to be showcased at Google’s upcoming I/O Developer conference in May. The smartphones will be released later in October this year as the successors to the last year’s Pixel 7 series. 

The renders reveal the next-generation Pixel 8 with a compact and slim form factor. It looks much smaller than its predecessor. The device has curved edges and the display features a center-aligned punch-hole cutout. The screen is also surrounded by thin bezels. The back panel retains the horizontal camera bridge with two sensors in a pill-shaped cutout and a LED flash located outside. The smartphone has an aluminum frame with power and volume rocker buttons located on the right side. The USB-C port is located at the bottom beside the speaker grille. 

Onleaks reveals that the Pixel 8 will be a compact device because it will feature a 5.8-inch display compared to 6.3-inch on the Pixel 7. Dimension-wise, the upcoming offering will measure 150.5 x 70.8 x 8.9mm (12mm with the camera bump). This 5mm shorter and 2mm narrower than the current Pixel 7. 

As per rumors, the Pixel 8 will be powered by the search giant’s upcoming Tensor G3 chipset. We will know more details about the smartphone at I/O 2023 which kicks off on May 10th.

It’s been a few months since Google launched its Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro flagship smartphones in the market, and now we are getting information about the upcoming Pixel 8 series smartphones.

Although the launch of the upcoming Pixel 8 and 8 Pro smartphones is expected to happen in late 2023, a new report from WinFuture has revealed some key details about the devices.

The report indicates that the Pixel 8 is codenamed Shiba, while the Pixel 8 Pro is codename Husky. This naming convention appears to be in line with Google’s Pixel 7 and 7 Pro, which are codenamed Panther and Cheetah, respectively.

It also comes at a time when there are reports making rounds indicating that the upcoming flagship smartphones from Google will be powered by the company’s Tensor G3 processor, which will be manufactured by Samsung using 3nm process. Further, it is also said that the chipset will be based on Samsung Exynos 2300 SoC.

The upcoming Tensor G3 chip is allegedly codenamed Zuma and will come with the Samsung G5300 modem which is found in the current-generation Tensor G2 processor of the Pixel 7 series.

Coming to the specifications, reports indicate that the Pixel 8 will feature a display with a 2268 x 1080 pixels screen resolution while the Pixel 8 Pro will offer a 2822 x 1344 pixels screen resolution. It further adds that both devices will come packed with up to 12GB of RAM. The screen resolution doesn’t line up with prior Google Pixel devices, so we would advise you to take this with a pinch of salt.

With the launch of the Google Pixel 7 series being just around the corner, we expect to see more rumors and leaks to surface as we get closer to the official release. However, a new report has revealed that the company might already have began work for the chipset that will be featured on the Pixel 8 series next year.

According to a GalaxyClub report, Google and Samsung have been working on an upgraded Tensor chipset. In other words, it might be the successor model that could be called Tensor 3. This third generation Tensor chipset carried the model number S5P9865 and is being tested on a developer board that is codenamed Ripcurrent. For those unaware, the Tensor 2 chipset for the upcoming Pixel 7 series is believed to have a model number S5P9855 and is being tested on a board codenamed Cloudripper.

The new report did not reveal any finer details regarding the Tensor 3 chipset. Although, its safe to assume that it will be more powerful than its predecessors. Furthermore, the partnership with the South Korean tech giant also implies that Google is looking to improve artificial intelligence processing and performance capabilities of the next gen Tensor chip overall.

At the moment, the Tensor chip arrives with some pretty neat features, but they do not rival Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset in terms of raw performance. But, the Tensor chips might soon catch up over the next couple of years. Regardless, having their very own chipset that is designed solely for their Pixel series of smartphones let’s Google customize and specialize the chipset for their own smartphones alone.
