Apple’s latest iPhones are clearly driving momentum in the premium smartphone segment, even as the broader market deals with supply issues and softer demand in lower price categories. New data from Counterpoint Research shows the top 10 best-selling smartphones made up 25% of global shipments in Q1 2026, marking the highest first-quarter concentration the firm has recorded so far.

Leading the rankings was the iPhone 17, which alone accounted for 6% of global smartphone shipments during the quarter. The iPhone 17 Pro Max and iPhone 17 Pro followed closely behind, giving Apple the top three spots overall. The report reflects how strongly the company’s latest lineup has resonated across multiple regions.

Part of the iPhone 17’s success seems tied to Apple narrowing the gap between the standard and Pro models this year. The base variant now starts with 256GB storage, features a 48MP main camera setup, and finally brings a smoother 120Hz ProMotion display to non-Pro buyers. Those upgrades appear to have made the regular model far more appealing to mainstream users who previously leaned toward older Pro devices or skipped upgrades entirely.

Counterpoint says the device posted double-digit year-over-year growth in markets including China, the US, and South Korea. Analysts also pointed to Apple’s ecosystem advantages, trade-in offers, and brand loyalty as key reasons behind the lineup’s strong performance, despite ongoing memory component shortages affecting the wider industry.

Samsung, meanwhile, secured five places in the global top 10, mostly through its entry-level Galaxy A-series phones. The Galaxy A07 4G emerged as the company’s best-performing Android phone, particularly in regions such as Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East where affordable devices continue to dominate volumes. The Galaxy S26 Ultra reportedly saw solid early demand too, though it missed making the list.

Xiaomi also held onto a spot in the rankings with the Redmi A5, showing continued strength in budget-focused markets.

For now, Apple’s iPhone 17 lineup and Samsung’s Galaxy A-series appear to be setting the pace at opposite ends of the market. That’s why we have phones like the Vivo X300 FE and the Apple iPhone 17 that offer high-end hardware while keeping the overall footprint relatively manageable.

On paper, both devices sit in a similar size class, both use 3nm chipsets, and both bring 120Hz OLED displays. And they are even priced similarly, just below $800. But if you look closely, they take noticeably different approaches to things like cameras, battery life, software, and even basic hardware priorities.

Here’s how these two phones compare.

Size and design

At first glance, the Vivo X300 FE and iPhone 17 look like they belong to the same category. The Vivo measures 150.8 × 71.8 × 8 mm, while the iPhone 17 comes in slightly smaller at 149.6 × 71.5 × 8 mm.

However, the two phones have notable differences in weight. The Vivo X300 FE weighs 191 grams, while the iPhone 17 is lighter at 177 grams. That 14-gram difference can make the iPhone feel a bit easier to hold over long periods.

Both phones use glass on the front and back with aluminum frames. Apple uses its Ceramic Shield 2 protection on the front glass, while Vivo sticks with a standard glass front. 

The iPhone 17 carries IP68 certification for immersion up to 6 meters, while the Vivo X300 FE has both IP68 and IP69, which also covers high-pressure water jets but only guarantees immersion up to 1.5 meters.

Displays are similar, but not identical

The Vivo X300 FE has a 6.31-inch LTPO AMOLED display with a resolution of 1216 × 2640 and a pixel density of around 461 ppi. Meanwhile, the iPhone 17 features a 6.3-inch LTPO Super Retina XDR OLED panel with 1206 × 2622 resolution and about 460 ppi.

Both support 120Hz refresh rates, which is notable since Apple only recently began bringing ProMotion-style refresh rates to its non-Pro lineup. Where they diverge is in brightness and display features.

The Vivo X300 FE claims up to 5000 nits peak brightness, while the iPhone 17 lists 1000 nits typical brightness, 1600 nits high-brightness mode, and up to 3000 nits peak. Apple also supports HDR10 and Dolby Vision, along with an anti-reflective coating.

Performance and chipset

Both phones are powered by new 3nm processors, but they come from different worlds. The Vivo X300 FE uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 5, featuring Oryon V3 cores and an Adreno 829 GPU. Meanwhile, the iPhone 17 runs on the Apple A19 chip.

Memory configurations include 12GB of RAM on the X300 FE, while the iPhone 17 features 8GB of RAM. Both are paired with either 256GB or 512GB storage.

Of course, raw specs rarely tell the whole story. Apple’s control over both hardware and software means the iPhone often performs smoothly even with less RAM. Meanwhile, Android flagships typically rely on larger memory pools to manage multitasking.

Software

As always, the biggest talk comes down to the software. The Vivo X300 FE runs Android 16 with Vivo’s OriginOS 6 interface on top. The company promises up to five major Android upgrades, which is a relatively long support window in the Android ecosystem.

The iPhone 17 runs iOS 26, with updates expected for many years beyond its launch. Apple’s software experience tends to emphasize consistency and ecosystem integration. Android phones, including Vivo’s, offer more customization and flexibility.

Cameras

The Vivo X300 FE wins in terms of optics with its triple-camera system. It has a:

• 8MP ultrawide camera

The inclusion of a periscope lens means the X300 FE can offer true optical zoom beyond the main camera.

On the other hand, the iPhone 17 has a dual rear-camera setup:

• 48MP main camera
• 48MP ultrawide camera

Apple doesn’t include a dedicated telephoto camera on the base iPhone 17, which means zoom photography will likely rely more on digital cropping.

However, the iPhone supports Dolby Vision HDR recording and multiple frame-rate options up to 4K at 60fps. Vivo supports 4K recording as well, but Apple typically focuses more heavily on video features. 

For selfies, Vivo includes a 50MP front camera, while the iPhone 17 has an 18MP ultrawide camera paired with a 3D depth sensor used for Face ID.

Battery and charging

Vivo wins in hardware in this department, too. It has a 6500mAh battery, significantly larger than the 3692mAh battery inside the iPhone 17. The former charges at 90W wired, 40W wireless speed, and also supports wireless charging. 

Apple’s charging system is slower by comparison. The iPhone 17 supports wired charging capable of reaching 50 percent in around 20 minutes and 25W wireless charging through MagSafe or Qi2.

Connectivity and extra features

Both phones support modern connectivity features such as Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0, and a wide range of global navigation systems. The Vivo X300 FE also includes an infrared port. 

On Apple’s behalf, the iPhone 17 includes Ultra Wideband support, satellite communication for emergency services, and deeper integration with Apple services like Find My. 

For biometrics, Vivo uses an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner under the display, while Apple relies on Face ID with its front-facing 3D sensor system.

Two different interpretations of a flagship

The Vivo X300 FE and iPhone 17 are roughly the same size and price, but they are two very different ideas of what a compact flagship can be.

Vivo is heavy on hardware with a larger battery, more RAM, faster charging, and a dedicated telephoto camera. The iPhone focuses more on software integration, camera processing, and ecosystem features.

Apple’s iPhone 17 series appears to be selling strongly in China, based on recent figures shared online. The lineup launched in September 2025 and, so far, seems to be outperforming rival flagship phones from China by a wide margin.

According to data posted by tipster Ice Universe on X, Apple has sold around 17.27 million units of the iPhone 17 series in China through the second week of January 2026. The number reportedly includes the standard iPhone 17 as well as the Pro and Pro Max models, covering a period of less than four months.

By comparison, sales of competing flagship series are significantly lower. The Xiaomi 17 lineup, including the Xiaomi 17 Ultra, is said to have reached about 3.08 million units. The Huawei Mate 80 series follows with 2.06 million units, while the Vivo X300 and Oppo Find X9 series trail further behind at roughly 1.16 million and 0.91 million units, respectively.

If accurate, the figures suggest that Apple’s latest iPhones have sold more units in China than all major domestic flagship series combined over the same timeframe. While the data is unofficial, it points to strong demand for iPhones in the premium segment, at least for this generation.

Many attribute the momentum to a more competitive base iPhone 17, which received larger upgrades than usual. The Pro models also saw design changes, which may have helped sustain interest at the higher end.

The China numbers broadly line up with wider industry expectations. Forecasts from late 2025 indicated Apple could ship around 247 million iPhones globally, slightly ahead of Samsung’s estimated 241 million Galaxy devices.

With new flagships expected later this year, including Samsung’s Galaxy S26 series, it remains to be seen how long Apple can maintain this pace.

Apple’s iPhone 17 lineup is getting plenty of attention for the usual stuff—large camera deco, unibody design, another chipset bump, and some issues with the anodized aluminum—but one of the more interesting changes is the one most people won’t even see. The phone is running on Apple’s new N1 networking chip, the first time the company has replaced the Broadcom parts it used for years. And based on fresh numbers from Ookla’s Speedtest data, that change is already showing up in real-world results.

Ookla pulled together crowdsourced Wi-Fi 7 performance from a wide mix of devices: the Pixel 10 series, Samsung’s Galaxy S25 lineup, and a handful of Snapdragon- and Dimensity-based phones including the vivo X200 Pro, Oppo Find X8 Pro, and the Huawei Pura 80 family. What surprised a lot of people is how well the iPhone 17 is hanging with (and sometimes beating) these Android flagships, even though this is Apple’s first attempt at building its own networking silicon.

Compared to the iPhone 16, the jump is clear—roughly a 40% boost in overall network performance. Globally, Google’s Pixel 10 still squeaks ahead with a slightly higher median download speed, but the gap is tiny. And when you look at the slower end of results—the speeds people hit in crowded apartments, cafés, airports—the iPhone 17 actually comes out looking stronger. It manages to hold onto more bandwidth when things get messy.

North America is where the difference shows the most. It has the highest Wi-Fi 7 adoption right now, and in that sample, the iPhone 17 posts peak speeds around 416 Mbps. That’s a hair above the Pixel 10 Pro (411.21 Mbps) and well ahead of Samsung’s S25 (323.69 Mbps). The high-end numbers tell a similar story: Apple is almost brushing 1 Gbps at the 90th percentile, which is impressive for a first-gen custom chip.

One weird wrinkle: the N1 still tops out at 160 MHz channel width, even though Wi-Fi 7 goes up to 320 MHz. On paper, that should hold Apple back. But Ookla’s data suggests that whatever Apple is doing under the hood is making up for the narrower channels, at least for now.

Wi-Fi 7 is still new in most of the world—only a small percentage of users in Europe and Asia are actually running it—but Apple clearly sees this as a long-term play.

It took seven generations for Apple to give the iPhone a real redesign. The iPhone 17 series, especially the Pro and Pro Max, introduces a new camera plateau layout that finally sets it apart from years of lookalike predecessors.

The changes aren’t just on the outside. There’s plenty of new happening under the hood, too.

While the standard iPhone 17 doesn’t look much different from its predecessor, it probably brings the most meaningful set of upgrades. The kind that finally fixes a lot of small annoyances and smooths out the rough edges from last year’s model. So if you are considering an upgrade, here’s why should get iPhone 17 over iPhone 16.

Display that refreshes at 120Hz, finally!

The most noticeable difference between the iPhone 16 and iPhone 17 is the display. The iPhone 17 finally moves to an LTPO Super Retina XDR OLED panel, which has so far been reserved for Pro models until now. The screen can now refresh between 1-120Hz and also supports Always on Display. 

Apple has increased the iPhone 17’s screen size slightly to 6.3 inches (vs 6.1 inches on iPhone 16), and the bezels have been reduced for a higher 90.1% screen-to-body ratio. The difference isn’t dramatic but noticeable when you hold the phones side by side.

The peak brightness has increased from 2000 nits (HBM) on the iPhone 16 to 3000 nits peak on the iPhone 17. Apple has also added an anti-reflective coating that cuts glare. Camera upgrades 

Apple didn’t change the look of the dual-camera setup, but what’s inside has improved. The iPhone 17 now carries two 48-megapixel sensors, one wide and one ultrawide, compared to the iPhone 16’s 48MP + 12MP pairing.

The difference here isn’t just numbers. The ultrawide camera on the iPhone 17 uses a larger 1/2.55″ sensor, which should technically improve light capture and reduce noise in darker scenes.

At a glance, the two phones look almost identical. Both have flat aluminum frames, glossy glass backs, and the same minimalistic look Apple refuses to abandon. But the iPhone 17 is slightly taller, 0.2mm thicker, and 7 grams heavier at 177g. The new device is also available in three new shades, Mist Blue, Sage, and Lavender, except the usual Black and White. 

Battery and charging improvements

Battery upgrades are often understated, and that’s the case here, too. The iPhone 17 packs a 3692mAh battery, up from 3561mAh in the iPhone 16. That’s not huge, something nonetheless. 

Charging, however, is where the iPhone 17 feels more modern. It now supports PD3.2 (with AVS) charging, which can reportedly juice it to 50% charge in 20 minutes. Wireless charging also reaches 25W for both MagSafe and Qi2 standards, offering 50% in about 30 minutes.

The iPhone 16’s wireless charging speeds topped out at 15W for Qi2, which felt slow by 2024 standards. The iPhone 17’s improvements bring it closer to the charging experience Android phones have offered for years.

Connectivity and ecosystem

On the connectivity front, the iPhone 17 has quietly moved to Bluetooth 6.0. Both support Wi-Fi 7, but Apple expands location support in the iPhone 17 with NavIC compatibility. The rest of the connectivity suite, including dual eSIM support, UWB (generation 2), and satellite messaging, remains the same. 

Pricing and storage

Apple dropped the 128GB base variant this year. The iPhone 17 starts at 256GB with 8GB RAM, while the iPhone 16 began at 128GB. However, the good thing is that it starts at the same price as last year’s model. That is $799. 

So, Should You Upgrade?

If you already own an iPhone 16, upgrading to the 17 might not be essential. But if you’re coming from an older model, or are deciding between the 16 and 17 today, the choice is clear. The iPhone 17 simply aligns better with modern expectations: smoother screen, stronger glass, better cameras, and faster charging. The Xiaomi 17 lineup launched in China on September 25 with strong buzz, but fresh analysis suggests sales momentum may already be slowing. According to Ming-Chi Kuo, shipments for the Xiaomi 17 series are now expected to come in below those of last year’s Xiaomi 15, with weaker-than-expected demand for the base model dragging the numbers down.

Xiaomi introduced three models this year—the Xiaomi 17, 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max—highlighting Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, larger batteries (up to 7,500mAh), and Leica’s camera tuning with 16.5EV dynamic range. The Pro and Pro Max also brought standout touches such as a 2.9-inch rear AMOLED “Magic Back Screen.” Early response was positive, with strong pre-orders and launch-day excitement.

But Kuo’s latest survey points to a downward revision in shipments, with estimates cut by around 20% from the initial 10 million target. That would put total sales below the Xiaomi 15 series’ roughly 8 million units. The key challenge is the standard Xiaomi 17, which was expected to contribute more than half of overall shipments but is instead accounting for only 15–20% of demand.

At the same time, Apple’s iPhone 17 appears to be eating into Xiaomi’s base-model sales in China. Unlike previous years, Apple’s entry model has reportedly received stronger-than-expected uptake thanks to upgrades such as a 120Hz display.

If National Day Golden Week (October 1–7) fails to reverse the trend, Xiaomi may resort to price adjustments to stimulate sales. For now, Pro and Pro Max models are holding steadier, but they’re unlikely to offset the weaker base model.

Kuo notes the outlook applies only to China, where Xiaomi holds about 15% of the premium market. Globally, only the Xiaomi 17 and a rumored Ultra are expected to launch, which could help limit the impact of this slowdown.

Now, Xiaomi is the latest brand to hop on this trend with the upcoming HyperOS 3. Even the name is quite familiar, as Xiaomi’s iteration of the Dynamic Island will be called Xiaomi Super Island. This feature would allow for small window multitasking, up to three active islands, and more.

Liquid Glass on the Xiaomi 17?

This one is more of a speculation rather than a confirmed aspect. When iOS 26 was first showcased, the new Liquid Glass UI elements were a major highlight. It was quite polarizing to the community as some loved it, while others hated the Windows Vista inspired look. But a leak from June hinted that the latest Android 16 OS based HyperOS 3 custom skin might be taking another inspiration from Apple.

A leaked screenshot of the HyperOS 3 UI revealed a familiar liquid glass like design. This can be seen with the frosted blur effects and glossy icons on the transparent glass-like search bar. Although, rather than going for an over the top look, Xiaomi might be focusing on a subtle depth to focus on readability. We can expect this UI aesthetic on more elements.

Xiaomi 17 Pro Max makes it rather obvious

Ignoring the new HyperOS 3 software features like the liquid glass and Xiaomi Super Island, there’s a much more obvious inspiration that Xiaomi is taking from the newly announced iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max. The next gen flagships from the Chinese tech giant are literally borrowing the name now, too. Early rumors had claimed that there is a new Xiaomi 16 Pro Max model in the works.

But the latest announcement confirming the Xiaomi 17 moniker basically confirms that Xiaomi wants to take the iPhone 17 series head on. Based on what we know so far, the upcoming premium phones are expected to include the base Xiaomi 17, Xiaomi 17 Pro, and Xiaomi 17 Pro Max. The last model seems like a direct competitor to the iPhone 17 Pro Max, and was recently leaked with a dual screen design.

Samsung’s Galaxy S26 series is still months away, but the first leaks are already sparking debate among fans. While most expect charging speeds to improve, a new report claims the Galaxy S26 Pro and Galaxy S26 Edge will stick with the same limitations as their predecessors.

The information comes from Ice Universe, a tipster with a solid track record, who posted on X that both the S26 Pro and Edge will once again be limited to 25 W wired charging. That figure hasn’t changed in years, despite a steady increase in battery capacities across its lineup.

According to previous leaks, the Galaxy S26 Pro will feature a 4,300 mAh battery, up from 4,000 mAh on the S25. The S26 Edge is tipped to include a 4,200 mAh cell, up from 3,900 mAh on the S25 Edge. These larger capacities may extend runtime, but they also mean longer downtime, since charging speeds remain unchanged.

With much of the Galaxy S26 Pro’s design reportedly unchanged from last year, an upgraded heat dissipation system also seems unlikely. This suggests the phone won’t be able to draw more power from the 25W adapter than the S25, as doing so would raise battery temperatures to unsafe levels.

Apple’s iPhone 17 series reportedly supports 40 W wired charging, and even the lighter iPhone Air model is said to offer 27 W. Chinese competitors, meanwhile, often push speeds well beyond 100 W. In this context, Samsung’s decision to hold back on faster charging feels conservative.

Interestingly, the Galaxy S26 Ultra may break away from this pattern. The flagship model is rumored to jump from 45 W to 60 W charging, creating a sharper gap between the Ultra and the other models.

All four models may get 120Hz displays

If you were hoping for ProMotion and always-on display on last year’s iPhone 16 or 16 Plus, you were out of luck. That might finally change this year. 

The iPhone 17 and 17 Air are rumored to support a 120Hz refresh rate. It’s still unclear if Apple will limit the base models to fixed 120Hz while reserving variable refresh (and always-on display) for the Pros. Either way, it’s better than the 60Hz panels that feel outdated on a $799 phone in 2025.

Apple also seems to be testing a new anti-reflective, scratch-resistant coating for all iPhone 17 displays. Not much has been confirmed, but it’s being described as tougher than Ceramic Shield.

Minor design changes, but more uniform materials

Design-wise, the iPhone 17 will likely look similar to recent models, but with some subtle changes. According to reports, Apple is moving back to aluminum for all devices, not just the entry-level ones. 

That’s interesting considering how much marketing was put behind titanium on the iPhone 15 Pro. The switch may have less to do with aesthetics and more to do with manufacturing consistency (or cost).

The iPhone 17 Pro models are also expected to shift the rear camera design to a horizontal aluminum bar that spans the top portion of the device. Meanwhile, the base iPhone 17 and the Air will reportedly maintain simpler, smaller camera modules with fewer sensors.

iPhone 17 Air’s tradeoff

There’s one obvious downside to making a phone thinner: battery capacity. The iPhone 17 Air is rumored to ship with a 2,800mAh battery, significantly smaller than the iPhone 17’s reported 3,500mAh. 

Apple seems to be aware of this and is expected to mitigate it with a combination of software optimizations (possibly in iOS 26), a power-efficient A19 chip, and even a return of the long-dead battery case accessory.

Still, anyone hoping to get all-day battery life in a super-slim phone should manage expectations. In exchange for the thinnest iPhone ever, you’re likely sacrificing longevity.

Chips and performance

On the processor side, Apple will again split its chips between tiers. The iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air are likely to run the A18 Pro chip—carried over from the iPhone 16 Pro—while the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max will get the new A19 Pro, built on a more efficient 3nm process.

The Pro models may also include 12GB of RAM for the first time. The increased RAM will contribute to enhancing Apple Intelligence and other AI features’ performance. 

Meanwhile, all models are said to include Apple’s in-house C1 modem, which first appeared in the iPhone 16e. 

Cameras upgrades 

The headline camera improvement this year will be on the Pro models. Both are expected to feature a 48MP telephoto lens with a 3.5x zoom (down from 5x last year).

The reduced optical zoom might be seen as a downgrade, but the idea is to deliver better framing and cropping for typical use cases like portraits. Apple will likely pitch this as more practical than its prior approach.

All models will reportedly get a new 24MP front-facing camera. That’s double the resolution of last year, and enough to maintain quality when zooming or cropping. 

Video might get its moment too. The iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max could finally support 8K video capture. Apple reportedly tested this for the iPhone 16 Pro, but it never shipped. Given that competitors like Samsung already offer this, Apple may have finally decided to close the gap.

The usual launch timeline

If you’re considering waiting, here’s what you should expect. Apple will likely unveil the iPhone 17 lineup in the second week of September, followed by preorders on that Friday and availability a week later. 

The timeline hasn’t changed much in years, and unless something major disrupts production, this year shouldn’t be any different.

Final thoughts

The iPhone 17 doesn’t appear to reinvent the smartphone, but it does reshape Apple’s lineup in a few key ways. The iPhone 17 Air could replace the Plus model and set the tone for a new design era. 

The base models may finally get high-refresh displays. And Apple is pushing more advanced features—like 8K video, new wireless tech, and upgraded cameras—deeper into the Pro tier.

For users still on an iPhone 13 or earlier, the jump will be noticeable. For those with a recent iPhone 15 or 16, the appeal might be less obvious, unless you’re waiting for a thinner, lighter model or always-on display on something other than a Pro.

The bottom line is that if your current phone works fine and you’re even slightly curious about Apple’s next design phase, waiting for the iPhone 17 is probably the smarter move.

In fact, the 5.5mm-thin iPhone 17 Air is rumored to include a battery as small as 2,800mAh.

To put that into perspective, the 5.8mm Galaxy S25 Edge—featuring the latest and most efficient Snapdragon 8 Elite chip—packs a relatively larger 3,900mAh battery. Compact smartphones have made a comeback in recent months. For a long time, this segment was primarily dominated by offerings from Samsung, Apple, and Google.

In recent years, Xiaomi entered this category with its base flagship model. A few months ago, Vivo also joined the list with a “mini” version of its flagship phone. More recently, OnePlus made its entry into this segment with much fanfare.

As we are only halfway through the year, several more compact smartphones are expected to launch. Let’s take a look at the anticipated models.

Upcoming Compact Smartphones

Vivo X200 FE

The Vivo X200 FE is expected to be released in global markets in July. According to the information available, the device will be a rebranded version of the Vivo S30 Pro Mini, which was recently launched in China.

For context, the design of the S30 Pro Mini is reminiscent of the iPhone 16. However, the IP69-rated handset is built around a slightly larger 6.31-inch display compared to the iPhone’s 6.1-inch screen. The 1.5K (2640 x 1216 pixels) OLED display on the Vivo supports up to a 120Hz refresh rate.

Internally, the phone features a MediaTek Dimensity 9300 Plus chip and a 6,500mAh silicon-carbide battery with support for 90W wired charging. It also comes with a versatile camera system, which includes: a 50MP Sony IMX921 primary sensor, a 50MP Sony IMX882 3x telephoto shooter, an 8MP ultrawide unit, and a 50MP front-facing camera with autofocus.

Google Pixel 10 and Pixel 10 Pro

The Pixel 10 series is expected to be unveiled in August. The base model and the Pro version will continue to feature a compact form factor.

The duo is anticipated to sport a 6.3-inch OLED display. Much like their predecessors, the standard Pixel 10 will likely offer an FHD+ resolution, while the Pixel 10 Pro is expected to have a higher 1.5K resolution.

Both models will be powered by the new Tensor G5 chip; however, they are said to feature different camera systems. For the first time, the standard variant will reportedly include a third telephoto sensor, though its other sensors will be a downgrade from the previous generation. The Pixel 10 Pro, on the other hand, is expected to retain the same camera hardware as its forerunner.

Apple iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro

The iPhone 17 lineup is expected to be unveiled in September and will reportedly feature a new design. As usual, the standard and Pro models are said to retain their compact form factor.

Their display sizes are anticipated to increase from 6.1 inches to 6.3 inches. In a significant upgrade, the base iPhone 17 will also support a 120Hz refresh rate (ProMotion) for the first time.

The smartphones are expected to be powered by the A19 series of chips and are also rumored to include an upgraded 24MP front-facing camera.

The duo will be accompanied by two larger models: the iPhone 17 Pro Max and a new, thinner iPhone 17 Air.

Xiaomi 16

The Xiaomi 16 series is expected to launch in September, a month earlier than its predecessors. The standard model will continue the tradition of being a compact smartphone, marking the fifth consecutive generation to do so.

According to leaks, the handset will be built around a 6.39-inch display and will be powered by the upcoming Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 chipset.

Notably, the device is rumored to include a large 7,000mAh silicon-carbide battery. For comparison, the current-generation Xiaomi 15 has a 5,400mAh cell.

The rear camera system will reportedly consist of three 50MP sensors, offering wide, ultrawide, and telephoto perspectives. Finally, the phone is expected to ship with HyperOS 3, based on Android 16.

Vivo X300 Pro Mini

The Vivo X300 Pro Mini is anticipated to be released in October. It will be the company’s third compact smartphone, following the X200 Pro Mini and S30 Pro Mini.

The device is expected to feature a 6.3-inch display with an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor. A large 7,000mAh silicon-carbide battery will power the handset.

The phone is also tipped to retain a periscope telephoto camera alongside an ultrawide unit. Unlike its predecessor, it will also offer support for wireless charging.

While they look nearly identical to the current MagSafe charging pad introduced with the iPhone 16 series, these chargers pack a punch with support for the Wireless Power Consortium’s Qi 2.2 standard, rolled out earlier this year. Qi 2.2 brings beefier 50W charging, sharper magnetic alignment, and better efficiency, and Apple’s new chargers are certified to hit 45W (15V × 3A) when paired with a compatible USB PD charger.

This is a big leap from the iPhone 16’s 25W wireless charging cap, hinting that the iPhone 17 series might crank up both wireless and wired speeds—currently also stuck at 25W for wired charging. Faster charging means less time tethered to a cable, a win for users juggling busy days. The longer 2m cable option also adds some flexibility for desk or bedside setups, while the 1m version keeps things compact. For context, the Galaxy S25 series supports 15W wireless charging, and its successor might retain the same.

With the iPhone 17 expected to debut in September 2025, these chargers could ship alongside it, possibly sold separately. Apple is doubling down on MagSafe’s magnetic precision, which snaps perfectly onto compatible iPhones. Apple is giving the iPhone lineup its biggest design makeover in years. The upcoming iPhone 17 series, especially the Pro models, is expected to feature a wider rear camera bump that stretches farther across the back of the phone.

The camera lenses will still be aligned on the left, but the LED flash, microphone, and LiDAR sensor could move to the right. There’s also some debate about whether the phones will have a dual-tone design on the back. Some leaks claim it’s happening, others say it’s not.

But this isn’t just a one-off redesign. After several years of playing it safe, Apple appears to be shifting gears starting in 2025. 

According to a fresh leak out of China, the company is planning major design changes every year for at least the next three iPhone generations.

Punch-holes, under-display sensors, and the road to iPhone 19

Well-known tipster Digital Chat Station reaffirms reports of a camera module redesign in 2025 iPhones in their latest leak. Then, in 2026, Apple is reportedly turning its attention to the front of the phone. 

The leak claims the iPhone 18 series will ditch the familiar pill-shaped module for the front camera and Face ID. It will be replaced by a cleaner punch-hole cutout for just the selfie camera.

And where does Face ID go? According to the leak, Apple’s long-rumored under-display Face ID tech could make its debut here, moving the entire system under the screen.

If that wasn’t ambitious enough, a bigger change might come in 2027. The iPhone 19 series is said to be Apple’s first true full-screen iPhone with no notch, no cutout. This means both the Face ID sensors and the selfie camera would sit under the display.

Rumors of a notchless iPhone have been around for a while, but this is the first time we’re hearing a clearer timeline. Of course, pulling off back-to-back design overhauls isn’t easy, even for Apple.

Under-display cameras still have a long way to go. Android brands like RedMagic have been experimenting with the tech for years, but image quality has yet to match what a traditional camera can do. So if Apple ships it in the iPhone 19, it’s possible there will still be trade-offs.
