Last week, HMD Global announced it has begun rolling out the Android 10 stable update to the flagship Nokia 9 PureView. The Nokia 9 PureView is its second phone to get the Android 10 update after the Nokia 8.1. The Android 10 roll-out has been pretty slow for a company that has received praise for being great at software support. It appears HMD Global listened to complaints and has decided to speed things up seeing has it has just been announced that Android 10 is now rolling out to the Nokia 7.1.

The update brings exciting features such as smart replies, new notification customizations, more control over location data, dark mode, and new gesture-based navigation.

The Nokia 7.1 was announced in October 2018. It has a 5.84-inch 1080 x 2280 display with a notch at the top and a thick chin. The phone is powered by the Snapdragon 636 processor with 3GB or 4GB of RAM and 32GB or 64GB of expandable storage.

There is an 8MP camera inside the notch while a 12MP + 5MP dual-camera setup sits on the back. The Nokia 7.1 packs a 3060mAh battery with support for 18W fast charge. It also has NFC, a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner, and an audio jack.

When it launched, it ran Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box and later got updated to Android 9 Pie. HMD Global promises two years of OS upgrades and 3 years of security updates, so we expect the Nokia 7.1 will get Android 11 too since that should be released within its second year of life.

Based on the Android 10 roadmap, the Nokia 6.1, Nokia 6.1 Plus and the Nokia 7 Plus are next in line to get updated. Let’s see if HMD Global can pull off one more device update before the year ends.

Even though it is a midrange device and usually mid-rangers come with average displays, HMD Global put many efforts on the display found on the Nokia 7.1. It is not just a classic IPS panel with the Full HD+ resolution, but it has the HDR10 technology for better color reproduction, something that you can rarely find on devices with such an affordable price. It is a compact display, smaller than most of the actual midrange devices, so it is also easy to use with one hand. The second place goes to the AMOLED panel found on the Oppo K1, that also integrates an in-display fingerprint reader. Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 has just an average IPS panel just like most of the midrange phones, so it is nothing special.

Specs & Software

If you are looking for the phone with the best performance you should choose either the Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 or the Oppo K1. I would choose the first because Oppo K1 lacks a micro SD slot to expand the internal storage. It is powered by the Snapdragon 660 chipset that is one of the best midrange SoCs out there. And it also comes with up to 6 GB of RAM, just like the Oppo K1. Nokia 7.1 is inferior due to its lower-end Snapdragon 636, but unlike its opponents, it comes with Android One instead of a customized user interface, so it is still very smooth and reliable.

Camera

Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 is equipped with an impressive sensor on the rear and it wins the camera comparison. It boasts the latest 48 MP sensor by Samsung that is able to capture a lot of detail, even with low light. Right after the Redmi Note 7, we want to award the Oppo K1 for its outstanding 25 MP selfie camera. Nokia 7.1 is a good camera phone as well and its dual rear camera with Zeiss optics and dual pixel autofocus clicks very sharp and bright shots, but its selfie snapper is just an average front camera.

Battery

After launching the Nokia 7.1 at a launch event in London last month, the company had said that the phone would soon be made available in the Indian market. Well, today, HMD Global has officially launched the Nokia 7.1 in India.

Priced at Rs. 19,999, which roughly converts to $287, the Nokia 7.1 will be available for purchase in India from 7th December. It will be available through Nokia’s own online store as well as other leading mobile retailers across the country in two colors — Glossy Midnight Blue and Gloss Steel.

There are also several offers associated with the purchase of Nokia 7.1 in India. Airtel is offering 1TB of 4G data for plans starting at Rs. 199. On the other hand, the postpaid users get 120GB of additional data along with three months of Netflix subscription and one year of Amazon Prime subscription for selected plans.

To recall, the Nokia 7.1 features a 5.84-inch Full HD+ “PureDisplay” with 19:9 screen aspect ratio and a notch on top. The company claims that the PureDisplay’s internal HDR can convert the SDR content into the HDR in real-time.

Under the hood, the device is powered by Qualcomm‘s mid-range Snapdragon 636 octa-core processor, which is claimed to deliver 40 percent improved performance over its predecessor Snapdragon 630. It is coupled with Adreno 509 GPU and comes in two models — 3GB RAM and 4GB RAM.

However, the company has only launched the 4GB RAM model in India, which packs 64GB of internal storage. It also comes with a microSD card slot that enables storage expansion up to 400GB.

For photography, the phone comes with a new Zeiss imaging solution, featuring a dual camera setup on the back that’s stacked vertically in the top-center position. It comes with a 12-megapixel primary sensor and a 5-megapixel secondary sensor for depth sensing.

The camera comes with features like True Life HDR, Bokeh mode, Pro Camera mode, Livestream functionality, and Bothie. On the front side, it comes equipped with an AI-backed 8-megapixel snapper for taking selfies and video calling.

The Nokia 7.1 is a part of Google‘s Android One programme and runs Android 8.1 Oreo operating system out-of-the-box. The Finnish company has promised the Android Pie update by the end of this month and future updates for two years.

At the early part of October, HMD Global expanded its smartphone catalogue with the addition of the Nokia 7.1. The model was yet another Snapdragon 636-powered model and it came in 3GB+32GB and 4GB+64GB memory options. Well, that is on paper and n some region but apparently, HMD only made the lower 3GB+32GB version available in Europe.  The news making the rounds is that the 4GB RAM and 64GB storage variant will be available to buyers in Europe from this Friday.

Nokia 7.1 adopts a design that isn’t very much different from that of the Nokia 6.1 Plus (X6). It has a notch on top of the display but at the rear, there is a dual camera setup instead of a single sensor.  The device features a 5.84-inch Full HD+ “PureDisplay” with a 19:9 screen aspect ratio. The Nokia 7.1 runs on Android 8.1 Oreo under Google’s Android One program and comes with a promise for monthly security updates for three years after its launch.

On the camera end, the Nokia 7.1 packs a 12MP+5MP dual camera setup at the rear with Zeiss optics. The camera comes with features like True Life HDR, Bokeh mode, Pro Camera mode, Livestream functionality, and Bothie. HMD Global’s Nokia 7.1 and Xiaomi‘s Mi A2 Lite are the latest phones to receive the Android Pie update. While HMD Global specifically announced that the update has begun rolling out to the Nokia 7.1 globally, Xiaomi didn’t make an announcement and the update seems to be rolling out to just a select few at the moment.

For the Nokia 7.1, the update is 1.3GB in size and it brings a new system navigation, adaptive brightness, adaptive battery, and November’s security patch.

The update for the Mi A2 Lite is about 1002MB and also brings the same features the Nokia 7.1 is getting in addition to FM radio. According to XDA Developers who first reported the Mi A2 Lite was already getting the update, one user who lives in Poland already received the update.

Both the Nokia 7.1 and Xiaomi Mi A2 Lite are Android One phones and they run a stock-like version of Android. However, the Nokia 7.1 is the more expensive and more powerful version of the two. It sells for more than double the price of the Mi A2 Lite.

Rumors have it that the Nokia X7 will be the smartphone that HMD Global will be announcing through an unveil event in China on Oct. 16. In the recent past, the images and entire specifications of the smartphone have surfaced through its TENAA telecom authority listing. Fresh renders of the Nokia X7 have surfaced today. The new leak also reveals the pricing and release date of the Nokia X7.

Just as the TENAA listing had revealed, the new leak states that that the Nokia X7 would be coming with a 6.18-inch TFT LCD screen. The notched display will produce Full HD+ resolution of 2246 x 1080 pixels. A 20-megapixel camera and an earpiece are housed inside the notch of the Nokia X7. The company’s brand name can be seen on the bottom bezel of the phone.

The Snapdragon 710 chipset that includes a 2.2 GHz octa-core processor will be fueling the smartphone. According to TENAA, the smartphone will be coming in two RAM and storage models such as 4 GB RAM + 64 GB storage and 6 GB RAM + 128 GB storage. It will be coming with Android 8.1 Oreo OS preinstalled.

There is a ZEISS branding between the 13-megapixel primary sensor and 12-megapixel secondary sensor placed on the backside of the Nokia X7. The LED flash is placed on the left side of the dual camera system. The device is packed with a 3,500mAh battery.

A fingerprint scanner resides below the dual camera unit of the Nokia X7. The buttons for controlling volume and power are placed on the right side of the phone. The hybrid SIM tray is provided on the left side of the Nokia X7.

A 3.5mm audio jack is positioned on the top edge of the Nokia X7. An external speaker, a USB-C port and a microphone seems to be available on the bottom edge of the smartphone. The TENAA listing of the phone had revealed that the Nokia X7 would be landing in China in colors like red, silver and blue. The handset measures 154.8 x 75.76 x 7.97mm and it weighs 178 grams.

The Nokia X7 that features 6 GB of RAM and an inbuilt storage of 128 GB carries a price tag of 2,699 Yuan (~$390). There is no information available on the pricing of the 4 GB RAM and 64 GB storage model. The leak reveals that the Nokia X7 will be available for buying from Oct. 23. Outside of China, the handset is expected to sell with Nokia 7.1 Plus moniker.

Also, it appears to be the very same Nokia TA-1131 smartphone that was certified by TENAA around two weeks ago.  Hence, it is now being that the Finnish firm may announce the Nokia X7 smartphone on Oct. 16.

The Nokia X7 teaser image reveals that it will impress the audience with low-light photography prowess. There is no information available on the pricing of the Nokia X7. The 32 GB storage + 3 GB RAM and 64 GB storage + 4 GB RAM editions of the Nokia 7.1 were introduced with respective pricing of $349 and $400. The Nokia X7 is expected to debut with Nokia 7.1 Plus moniker outside of China. HMD Global will be holding a launch event in India tomorrow. The winner is Xiaomi Mi 8 SE even when it comes to hardware and performance. It features the octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 chipset which is the best option in the Android market if we exclude the 800 series found on the best flagship phones. So it provides the smoothest and fastest performance in every scenario. Unfortunately, this device does not have a micro SD slot unlike its opponents, but it is available with up to 128 GB of internal storage. Nokia 7.1 is the only device to have Android One installed,

Camera

If you are going to get one of these handsets, do not expect a huge camera quality. When it comes to cameras, these devices are just normal mid-rangers. This does not mean that their cameras are disappointing as they are much more than sufficient, but they are far from flagships. These devices feature similar camera specifications, so we can not choose a winner until we test Nokia 7.1 which is still not available to purchase.

Battery

Given its bigger body, Huawei Honor View 10 Lite has also a bigger battery than its concurrence. It features a lithium unit with a capacity of 3750 mAh which is able to last more than Nokia 7.1 and Xiaomi Mi 8 SE and their below-3200 mAh batteries. However, you will need some more time to fully charge it as it does not features a very fast charging technology.

Price

Judging from the overall specification and prices of these phones, I would definitely pick Xiaomi Mi 8 SE due to its better display, compact dimensions, and higher performance. After a few months of silence, HMD Global just announced a new smartphone: Nokia 7.1, with midrange specs at a modest price. Among the latest important smartphones launched in the last period in the same price range, there are Huawei Mate 20 Lite and Huawei Honor Play, which are two of the best Chinese choices in the global market if we exclude Xiaomi devices. Here we will compare their specs and potentialities.

Nokia 7.1 vs Huawei Mate 20 Lite vs Honor Play

Design

I like Nokia 7.1 because besides being original, it is a very compact phone and it fits very well in a pocket. It comes with a glass back, a notch and the Gorilla Glass 3 protection and it is the most interesting when it comes to aesthetics and build quality. I put Huawei Mate 20 Lite at the second place, but it is still a very original device with elegant looks, while Honor Play is just a classic metal unibody handset.

Display

Nokia 7.1 has definitely the most interesting display as it supports the HDR10 technology for richer colors. However, note that this is also the smallest panel of the trio as the other two devices have a wide 6.3-inch screen which could be more comfortable for advanced users.

With the actual price, Nokia 7.1 does not convince me so much like other HMD Global’s devices and I believe there is something better, such as Honor Play, in this price range. You should choose it if you want the best performance, while if you care more about the cameras, then go for the Huawei Mate 20 Lite. Nokia 7.1 starts from €319 (which roughly translates into $367), Huawei Mate 20 Lite can be purchased for less than €400 or $460 (even €350 thanks to street prices) and Honor Play currently costs about €320 or $360. Before being the winner of this comparison, the Honor Play is also the most convenient device you can get in this trio. As expected, at a launch event in London, UK, HMD Global announced its brand new Nokia 7.1 smartphone. It comes with a familiar all-glass exterior that we’ve seen on recently launched budget phones by HMD Global.

The Nokia 7.1 features a 5.84-inch Full HD+ “PureDisplay” with 19:9 screen aspect ratio with a notch on top. The company claims that the PureDisplay’s internal HDR can convert the SDR content into the HDR in real-time.

Under the hood, the device is powered by Qualcomm‘s mid-range Snapdragon 636 octa-core processor, which is claimed to deliver 40 percent improved performance over its predecessor Snapdragon 630. It is coupled with Adreno 509 GPU and comes in two models — 3GB RAM and 4GB RAM.

The 3GB RAM model packs 32GB of internal storage while the 4GB RAM model comes with 64GB of onboard storage. Both the models feature a microSD card slot, enabling you to further expand the phone’s storage capacity up to 400GB.

In terms of photography, the phone comes with a new Zeiss imaging solution. The Nokia 7.1 has a dual camera setup on the back that’s stacked vertically in the top-center position. It comes with a 12-megapixel primary sensor and a 5-megapixel secondary sensor for depth sensing.

The camera comes with features like True Life HDR, Bokeh mode, Pro Camera mode, Livestream functionality, and Bothie. On the front side, it comes equipped with an AI-backed 8-megapixel snapper for taking selfies and video calling.

Just like every other Nokia smartphone, this one too is a part of Google‘s Android One programme. The phone runs Android 8.1 Oreo operating system out-of-the-box. The Finnish company has promised the Android Pie update by the end of this month and future updates for two years.

There’s a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor for added security. Connectivity options on the device include Dual 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 ac (2.4GHz + 5GHz), Bluetooth 5, GPS + GLONASS, Type-C 2.0, and NFC. The phone drives power from a 3,060mAh battery with support for fast charging.

The Nokia 7.1 will be available in two color options — Gloss Midnight Blue and Gloss Steel that has a copper accent.  It’ll be available for pre-order in the European market from tomorrow and will start shipping later this month. HMD Global, the Finnish company behind the Nokia branded smartphones, has sent out media invites for a launch event scheduled to take place on 11th October in India.

While the company has not mentioned which device is plans to launch, it’s believed that HMD Global is planning to launch the Nokia 7.1 and the Nokia 7.1 Plus (aka Nokia X7) in the Indian market. It’s noteworthy that both the smartphones are expected to launch globally on 4th October.

The Nokia 7.1 Plus is rumoured to feature a notched display, just like the Nokia 5.1 Plus and the Nokia 6.1 Plus. On the other hand, the Nokia 7.1 is expected to come with a normal display, without any kind of notch.

The Nokia 7.1 could feature a 6-inch screen that will carry support for an aspect ratio of 18:9. It is rumoured to be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 710 processor along with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage.

It’s bigger variant, the Nokia 7.1 Plus, is also speculated to be driven by Snapdragon 710 12nm chipset, coupled with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. We are also expecting a bigger display and higher capacity battery for the Plus variant.

Both the smartphones will be a part of Google‘s Android One programme, and thus, there’s a possibility that the phones could be running the latest Android 9.0 Pie operating system out-of-the-box.

A new Nokia phone with a model number of TA-1131 has received approval from the TENAA Chinese authority. The TENAA listing of the TA-1131 does not feature its images, but its entire specifications have been listed. The specifications of the smartphone suggest that it could be the Nokia X7 smartphone for China. Outside of China, the handset is likely to debut as Nokia 7.1 Plus.

According to the TENAA listing of the Nokia X7, it measures 154.8x x 75.7 x 7.97mm and weighs 185 grams. Its color variants are red, silver and blue.

The handset is fitted with a 6.18-inch display that produces Full HD+ resolution of 2246 x 1080 pixels. The screen resolution of the phone indicates that it features a notched display.

The Nokia TA-1131 is powered by an octa-core processor that clocks at 2.2 GHz. The handset is heavily speculated to arrive as the first Nokia phone with Snapdragon 710 chipset. The 64 GB edition of the smartphone features 4 GB of RAM and higher 128 GB variant has 6 GB of RAM.

The back panel of the Nokia X7 features 12-megapixel + 13-megapixel dual camera setup. The front notch includes a 20-megapixel selfie shooter. The handset is preinstalled with Android 8.1 Oreo OS. According to Roland Quandt, one of the top leakers with a great track record, the Nokia 7.1 will have 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. It will be available in Steel or Blue and have a €399 (~$462) price tag. The price tag is high but it is the same as that of the Nokia 7 Plus when it was announced this year.

The Nokia 7.1 will come with a Snapdragon 710 processor, dual rear cameras, a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner and a display without a notch. A recent report has revealed that HMD Global is prepping up to debut Nokia 7.1 and Nokia 7.1 Plus smartphones on Oct. 4. The Nokia 7.1 is expected to arrive with a notch-less screen whereas the 7.1 Plus will be equipped with a notched display. Like the recent Plus models from the company, the Nokia 7.1 Plus is expected to release as Nokia X7 in China. Freshly leaked hands-on photos of a new Nokia phone has surfaced today. Since the images only reveal the rear side of the phone, it is difficult to identity whether it is a Nokia 7.1 and Nokia 7.1 Plus.

The new images reveal that the handset is equipped with a glass rear and a metallic frame. It features vertical dual camera setup followed by a fingerprint reader on the upper half of the rear panel.

In the above image, the alleged Nokia X7 can be seen in silver white color. The rear design of the phone is not very different from the Nokia X6.
