Chinese smartphone maker UMIDIGI has launched a new budget smartphone, the A9 Pro. Touted to be a pro in camera, the device has a Sony sensor on both the rear and front camera setups. The phone starts at an aggressive price of $119.99 and will go on sale from October 16 at 00:00 PDT.

UMIDIGI shared a product video along with a press release to highlight the features of the A9 Pro. The device looks just like any other entry-level UMIDIGI smartphone. The company says it is a direct successor to the UMIDIGI A7 Pro that launched a few months back. The new budget smartphone will be available on AliExpress starting from October 16th. The device is priced aggressively at $119.99 as opposed to $199.99 for the 4GB/64GB variant, while the 6GB/128GB variant is priced at $139.99

UMIDIGI A9 Pro Specifications

The entry-level device features a 6.3-inch FHD+ display with 2340×1080 pixels and 2.5D glass a water-drop notch. The power and volume buttons are on the right, while the left has a dedicated shortcut key(Temperature measurement/PTT) and SIM Card slot. The rear panel has a fingerprint sensor and a quad-camera layout. Powering the device is Mediatek Helio P60 SoC along with Mali G72 MP3 GPU. The device is available in two storage variants- 4/6GB LPDDR4x RAM and 64/128GB UFS 2.1 storage respectively.

At the back, it has a rectangle camera layout with four sensors. The main lens is a 48MP f/1.79 Sony sensor. However, this is found only on the 6/128GB variant. The 4/64GB model has a 32MP Sony sensor. Other lenses are the same on both which include 16MP 120° FOV ultra-wide, two 5MP depth, and macro sensors. Front has a 32MP selfie shooter.

Additionally, A9 Pro also has an infrared sensor on the rear panel to measure the body temperature of people without touching them. Other features include 4G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.2, GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, 4,150mAh battery with 10W charging via USB-C. The device comes in Forest Green and Onyx Black color options.

The phone ships with all the usual items that come with any device. It’s worth mentioning that you get a fast charger out of the box.

Umi Plus E Review: DESIGN and DISPLAY

When it comes to the design, we are looking at the all-metal phone (except for the top and bottom parts for antennas).

The build quality has actually improved over the regular Umi Plus. Now I don’t have any complaints as the buttons do not rattle. Well, the only thing that some users may not like is the sharp edges on the backplate. Also, the backplate attracts fingerprints and smudges very easily, which is unusual to metal surfaces.

We have a 5.5” 1080p display, which is pretty sharp, vibrant and it is a nice panel overall.

A nice touch is a customizable LED notification light, which sits next to the 5MP camera, and navigation buttons. You can choose between the on-screen keys and the capacitive keys, and change the position of them.

I love the fact that physical home button can be just tapped as it serves as a back key. Also, it has a fingerprint scanner. It is quite accurate but sometimes the display may light up a bit slower if you unlock the phone straight from the standby mode. A customizable shortcut button is a pretty nice idea but it would have been nice if it worked from the standby mode.

As for the camera, we have a 13MP Samsung shooter with a dual tone dual-LED flash.

The loudspeaker sound quality is now better than the Umi Plus but it is still kind of mediocre. I would love to hear some more rich tones.

The sound quality via the headset jack is pretty good for the price of the phone and that is thanks to the built-in Hi-Fi audio chip.

Umi Plus E Review: HARDWARE and PERFORMANCE

As far as the specs go, the Umi Plus E is just a beast. It has an octa-core Mediatek Helio P20 chip with the clock speeds of 2.3GHz, whopping 6GB of RAM and 64GB of expandable storage.

The gaming performance is great. I played some games like Asphalt 8, Nova 3 on the highest graphics and the Umi Plus E handles them absolutely fine. Also, I didn’t notice any overheating issues even after 30 mins of gaming.

Umi Plus E Review: USER INTERFACE

The Umi Plus E ships with the pretty much stock-looking Android 6.0.

There are not too many features to talk about except for those I have already mentioned (customizable navigation bar and LED notification light). Most importantly, the Umi Plus E is fast on the daily basis and you can keep a lot of apps opened thanks to 6GB of RAM. Finally, I didn’t have any issues with the phone’s daily performance no matter what I did with it and that is really impressive.

Umi Plus E Review: IMAGE QUALITY

IT IS HIGHLY-RECOMMENDED TO DOWNLOAD FULL RESOLUTION CAMERA SAMPLES TO SEE THE ACTUAL IMAGE QUALITY. THE PICTURES UPLOADED ON THE WEBSITE ARE 50% SMALLER IN RESOLUTION.

The camera department is where the Umi Plus E could be better. Keep in mind that I tested the phone on a cloudy day but it’s winter time… You can get some decent-looking photos and I see an improvement over some previous Umi phones. However, the daylight images could have more detail and sharpness. Also, the colors look a bit washed out in some of the shots, the dynamic range and white balance adjustment is not always accurate.

The low-light camera performance is not so great either even for a $200 phone. The images lack in detail, there is a lot of noise and a visible purple tint in most of the shots.

The selfie camera is okay and it will do the trick for social media. However, I would love to see some more sharpness and detail in the photos.

When it comes to video, the footage does not really look good. You can now shoot in 4k resolution but it looks like just an upscaled 1080p video. The major problems here are the aggressive color and auto-exposure shifting. Also, the footage could look sharper and there could be less noise.

Umi Plus E Review: CONNECTIVITY

When it comes to connectivity, the Umi Plus E performs great. I didn’t have any issues with the GPS accuracy, Wifi or call quality.

Umi Plus E Review: BATTERY LIFE

When it comes to battery, Umi Plus E is a great performer as it ships with a beefy 4000mAh unit. I could get over 6 hours of screen-on time on a daily use, which is a great result. Also, the phone ships with the fast charger and I was able to fully charge the phone in around 1:30 mins.

Umi Plus E Review: CONCLUSIONS

Umi Plus E is another phone from China that aims to deliver a lot of value for about $230. It definitely succeeds in a lot of ways.

The Umi Plus E is a really powerful phone and that translates to a great day-to-day and gaming performance.

Also, the device has a nice and sharp display, the user interface is simple and fast, the phone is nicely designed and uses premium materials in the construction.In addition, the battery life is great and you can charge it up fast.

On the other hand, the camera still remains the weakest point of the Umi smartphone. While it is not terrible, we have some strong competitors that produce better quality images and videos.

At the end of the day, Umi Plus E is probably the best Umi smartphone I’ve tested and it seems like a very solid phone for the price if you don’t mind just an average camera performance.

Umi, which has changed the name to UMIDIGI, has been known for producing quite a lot of smartphones but the company also makes other gadgets. We just came across their brand new Bluetooth speaker that costs just about $33. Learn more in our full review.

UNBOXING

The speaker comes in quite a nice box. Inside of it, you can find some paperwork, AUX cable and the micro USB cable.

DESIGN

The very first impressions you’re going to get is that the speaker is very tiny and lightweight.

It is made entirely out of aluminium and the build quality is top-notch. Also, the buttons feel nice and tactile.

On the bottom, we have a silicone pad to prevent the speaker from sliding on the table.

Overall, this speaker definitely exceeded my expectations in terms of the build and the overall looks and feel.

PAIRING

Pairing the UMIDIGI Bluetooth speaker is very easy as the pairing mode turns on automatically once you power on the device. All you have to do is turn on the Bluetooth on your smartphone and select it. All other times the speaker will connect to your smartphone automatically in just a second.

SOUND QUALITY

For such a tiny speaker, the sound quality is pretty good. If you have tested hundreds of speakers like me, you will not be surprised that these tiny cheap speakers can sound pretty well.

The UMIDIGI speaker has a decent sound quality with some rich tones and clear vocals. Also, there is a decent amount of bass. However, the sound gets distorted quite a lot at the highest volume settings.

TEST NOTES

The built-in battery allowed us to listen to music for about 7 hours, which is a decent result.

The built-in mic lets you use the speaker for handsfree calling. The call quality is pretty good as we were able to make a clear conversation.

CONCLUSIONS

Overall, the UMIDIGI Bluetooth speaker is a pretty good device for the price. We cannot say that this is the only speaker you should check out in this price range but the UMIDIGI speaker has a premium design and build, it sounds pretty well and we did not have any connectivity issues.

Therefore, we can recommend this speaker to buy, even if it is not the only great option for this price on the market.

The first time we came across the Helio X27 chip was in a yet-to-be released LeEco phone called the LeEco Dual 3. Now Mediatek has taken the covers of the processor and it’s now official. But even though it was first spotted on a LeEco phone, it appears Umi will be the first to launch a phone with the new processor in the form of their Umi Z.

It is no surprise that Umi will want to be the first manufacturer to release a phone with the new chip seeing as they did the same with the Helio P20 sporting Umi Plus E and according to sources Mediatek is more than happy with the success of the phone, so why not partner with them again on their next device?

Umi is calling the Umi Z their annual ultra-flagship device but apart from the fact that it might be the first device to feature the new chip, every other detail about the device is still unknown.

Judging from the upgrades the Helio X27 is offering over other chips, we expect the Umi Z to have a better battery life and probably sport dual cameras since it now has an upgraded Imagiq image signal processing processing solution. The new upgrade combines color and mono cameras depth-of-field applications into a single ISP aimed at both quality and functionality for photography.

When it comes to the main camera, there is a 13MP shooter with f/2.0 aperture and dual tone dual-LED flash. The fingerprint sensor is accurate, it works straight from the standby mode but the display is a little slow to react at times.

The loudspeaker quality is just average and the volume output is kind of low.

The sound via the headset jack is not bad at all for a budget phone and that its thanks to the built-in Hi-Fi audio chip.

When it comes to hardware, Umi Max comes with some specs we have seen on quite a few China phones.

The device sports and octa-core Helio P10 chip, 3GB of RAM and just 16GB of expandable storage.

The gaming performance is good but only if you play games on medium graphics.

What I like about Umi phones is that they ship with nearly stock-looking Android 6.0 with just a few added features.

One of the key features is that you can choose between physical capacitive buttons and the on-screen navigation keys, and you can switch the position of them.

Most importantly, the user interface is fast and I didn’t have any lag or hiccups.

Umi Max Review: IMAGE QUALITY

The daylight image quality is mediocre. Sure, you can get some decent-looking images with this phone but usually, the colours are a bit off, the dynamic range adjustment is poor and there could be more detail.

As for low-light camera performance, it is okay for a $150 phone but it is definitely not the best in class.

As for video, the quality of footage is okay but it could definitely look sharper.

The selfie camera can take images that are for sure usable for social media needs.

Most of the connectivity options are fine but the GPS is not always accurate e.g. if you use it outside the city like I did.

A 4000mAh battery performs well. To be honest, | could not squeeze it out in one day and I would say that the Umi Max should last you 2 or even 3 days of normal usage.

That translates to over 7 hours of screen-on time, which is a very good result.

Umi Max Review: CONCLUSIONS

Umi Max aims to bring you a premium design, some nice features and simplicity in one package. It definitely succeeds in some ways but fails elsewhere.

We have an all-metal design, nice and sharp display, clean-looking and fast user interface and some welcome customization options. Also, a beefy battery will keep the lights on for a quite a bit of time.

On the other hand, the buttons of the phone rattle quite a bit, the 3D gaming is only possible if you set graphics to medium in some games. Also, the camera is a department where Umi needs to step their game up. Sure, you can get some nice-looking images with this phone but more often than not, you will not be happy with the results.

At the end of the day, Umi Max is not a bad phone but it is not the best-in-class either. It has some nice features that make a phone a compelling offering but shortcomings are to be taken into consideration too.

The very first thing you are going to notice is that the device has a fantastic build quality for the phone this cheap.

It uses a solid metal frame, tactile metal buttons and rounded edges that definitely help with the grip.

The phone has a 5” 720p display, which may not sport the highest resolution but it is sharp enough for the daily use.

The capacitive buttons are not backlit but we have a notification LED light that most of the cheap phones lack.

One annoying thing is that the backplate is very hard to remove and I suggest using a credit card to do that. Under the hood, you can find 2 SIM card slots, microSD card slot and a removable 2050mAh battery.

The loudspeaker quality is just average as on most of the cheap phones.

The Umi London sports a quad-core MTK6580 chip, 1GB of RAM and 8GB of expandable storage.

These are definitely not the flagship-grade specs but the phone is doing an okay job handling some 3D games like Asphalt 8 on the medium graphics. Well, there are quite a few skipped frames and a bit of stutter but you can still enjoy playing the game.

The phone ships with the stock-looking Android 6.0, which has a few added features like a bunch of different gesture and motion controls. Most of them are gimmicky to me but the ones I usually use work fine.

Sometimes it may take a bit longer to load an app or switch between different apps but in general, the user interface performance is pretty good for a $69 phone. However, you may have a little bit of random stutter if you install a lot of apps, so keep that in mind.

Umi London is yet another cheap phone from China but it has a very good build quality and it actually looks quite premium for just $69.

The phone also rocks a pretty good display and Android 6.0 with some extra features out of the box.

However, you have to know that you may have a little bit of stutter if you install a lot of apps on the phone. Also, both cameras are quite terrible, and the battery life is just average.

All in all, Umi London is a premium-looking cheap Android phone that has quite a lot to offer but it has a few shortcomings that justify a low price of the device.

UMi is one of the few Chinese companies who have managed to consistently release some interesting mid-range smartphones in the past few months. The UMi Super and the UMi Max, both are pretty good phones, but if you were hoping to find something more pleasant to the eyes, then the upcoming UMi smartphone should be something that could interest you.

We have got the first pictures of the unnamed UMi flagship. While the phone is not yet released, we can see that the company seems to have taken inspiration from the gorgeous Galaxy Note 7 for this phone’s design, with some even calling it the Note 7 Mini. What we know at the moment is that the phone will be smaller than the Galaxy Note 7. It will be made out of a single piece of aluminum, with a slim body. All the ports, including the USB and headphone jack seem to be located at the bottom.

The fingerprint sensor will be located up front, and will be oval in shape. To be honest, the phone in the pictures looks quite premium. Hopefully, we will be able to get more details about this UMi flagship in the next few days.

Two days ago, Umi uploaded a video on Youtube of two women; one using the Umi Max and the other using an iPhone 6s and put them through a 5-hour battery test.

The test covered chatting (15 mins), camera usage (15 mins), web browsing (30 mins), E-book reading (30 mins), offline video watching (30 mins), phone calls (30 mins), gaming (30 minutes), music (1 hr), and instagram ming (1 hr).

Umi says at the end of the test, the Umi Max still had 45% of charge left while the iPhone 6s’ battery level was at 35%. Both phones had full charges before the test.

While the Umi Max clearly wins, it’s important to mention some important specs of both phones. The Max has a 4000 mAh battery, a 5.5” FHD screen, 3GB of RAM, and a Helio P10 SoC while the iPhone 6s has a 1715 mAh battery, a 4.7” 1334 x 750 screen, 2GB of RAM, and Apple’s A9 processor.

With less than half of the Umi Max’s battery, I don’t think the 6s did badly even though it has a smaller screen with a lower resolution.

Umi has had it going well this year following the release of the Umi Super but they are cooking up something to challenge OPPO’s R9 in foreign markets. The OPPO R9 was instrumental in cementing OPPO’s spot in the top 5, selling over 700 million units in 88 days.

But while it has done very well in China, it has not really gotten positive reviews outside. Some people have complained about the fact that it runs the older Android Lollipop 5.1 which is based on Color OS. Others have complained about the design similarities to the iPhone 6S most especially the rose gold version and also the high price.

Umi believes it can take on the OPPO R9 with the Umi Max. A few details of the Umi Max says it will run Android 6.0 Marshmallow, have a USB Type-C port, Helio P10 SoC, a beautiful design, and a battery and price worth looking forward to.

We can clearly see that Umi is set to iron out the issues wrong with the R9, but a quick tip here. Android 6.0 is nice, but if the company promises Android Nougat and delivers, it will go a long way in increasing sales.

As far as design, the phone is well constructed and it feels premium due to its all-metal build.

The usual buttons are nice and tactile and they do not rattle. What is interesting is that we have an extra button and you can programme it to open up certain apps. Unfortunately, this button does not wake up the phone from standby mode.

We have a USB C port for charging, which sits next to the loudspeaker. The sound quality is pretty good but it lacks depth. Also, I found the maximum volume to be too low.

As far as the audio quality via the 3.5mm headset jack, it is great and that is thanks to the embeded Hi-Fi audio chip. The sound is rich and clear, it has a good amount of depth. Finally, the volume output is loud.

The 5.5” display is very sharp with natural looking colors and it is a great panel overall. Also, the display is covered with Gorilla Glass 3.

We have a 5MP selfie shooter on the top and on the bottom there is a capacitive home button, which also acts as a customizable LED notification light. Also, you can choose either on-screen navigation buttons or capacitive buttons.

A 13MP Panasonic camera along with dual LED flash is here for picture taking. Right below we can find a fingerprint sensor, which is quite fast, accurate and it works straight from the standby mode. However, I found the display to respond slower than usual if you unlock the phone very quickly several times in a row.

Overall, Umi Super feels great in the hand and it feels like a premium phone due to its metal build.

Umi Super Review: HARDWARE and PERFORMANCE

Umi Super ships with an octa-core Mediatek Helio P10 chip with the clock speeds of 2GHz, 4GB of RAM and 32GB of expandable storage. These are pretty good specs for the price of the phone, to say the least.

The gaming performance is decent if you play games on medium graphics. If you set graphics to maximum, you should expect a lot of stutter and skipped frames.

When it comes to the user interface, we have a nearly stock-looking Android 6.0 UI with just a few added features and customization options. I love the fact that you can switch the positions of navigation buttons and do some other things to customize the phone.

Most importantly, the UI runs fast and I didn’t have a single hiccup in more than a week.

Umi Super Review: IMAGE QUALITY

A 13 camera can take pictures really fast.

The daylight image quality could be pretty good as the phone can take some nice photos but… I noticed that there are a lot of images with soft focus on the left side or on the corners of the picture. Hopefully, this is something Umi addresses in a future software update.

A good thing is that macro shots turn out to look pretty good with nice details and bokeh effect.

The low-light shots can sometimes look okay but I noticed that a purple tint kicks in some situations.

A 5MP selfie shooter is not the best out there but it will do the trick for social media.

A 1080p video quality is just okay as the footage could look sharper and have more detail.

I didn’t have any connectivity issues with the phone as the signal reception was good and the call quality was decent. Also, the Wifi worked fine and the GPS was accurate.

Umi Super Review: BATTERY LIFE

4000mAh battery is one of the strong points of the device. Also, it comes with a fast-charge support and I could fully charge the phone in just under 1h and 30 mins.

As for day-to-day use, I could constantly get around 6 hours of screen-on time on a mixed use.

On the days that I used the phone more heavily, I could still get 4.5h of SOT (gaming, using the phone as a wifi hotspot etc.), which is a good result.

Umi Super Review: CONCLUSIONS

Umi did a great job with its Super phone. The device is well built, it feels premium and it has a sharp display. Also, the UI performance is snappy and the battery, that could be recharged fast, performs great. In addition, I love some extra features like a customizable button and pulsing notification LED light.

However, the camera performance is just mediocre (it could be pretty good but the soft or uneven focus on the corners of the image kind of ruins things up). Also, the display could light up faster once the fingerprint has been recognized at times (especially if you unlock the phone very quickly several times in a row).

All in all, Umi Super is probably the best Umi’s phone yet. It does most of the things right but it falls short in a few departments that hopefully will be improved with the future software updates.

UMi seems to be doing well with its new smartphones. The UMi Touch was a pretty good mid-range device, with powerful features and a large battery that gave it an edge over others. Now, the company has announced a toned down version, called the UMi Touch X which aims to satisfy the needs of the budget large battery lovers.

The UMi Touch X brings the same metallic design of the Touch, featuring up to 95% CNC Cut aluminum metal. It features smooth curves to make sure that the phone fits well in hand. This design particularly comes in handy because of the large battery inside. The Touch X comes with a 4000mAh battery which could increase the weight, but the overall 8.5mm thin body and curved design help in the ergonomics.

Another highlighted feature of the UMi Touch X is the FHD display. Yes, the phone sports a 5.5-inch FHD 1080p panel with 2.5D arch corning gorilla glass 3 for the best viewing experience in the segment. At the back, the phone comes with an 8MP Sony IMX 219 camera sensor, which the company claims is better than most 13MP cameras. UMi TOUCH packed with a 4000mAh internal big battery, from the spec it says 15 days standby time.

Here we took one out for test to see what is the real capacity inside the UMi TOUCH.

• Battery number: SHT-436588PL
• Size: 4.5mm
• Label capacity: 3800~4000mAh
• Input: 4.35V

Test procedure:

1. Charge battery: Charging in 0.2c constant current till 4.2v, then set to constant voltage, current should be smaller than 0.1c, cut off the current immediately after fulling charge.
2. Let it sit for 5 mins
3. Release battery: release battery in 0.2c constant current till it finish
4. Let it sit for another 5 mins
5. 24 hours Circulate testing from step 1 – step 4

Analyzing Results
First test result doesn’t count in the report, the second and third run test result show the difference capacity based on different temperature.

After 24 hours testing result:

Battery release test result Graph 1 : Different color represent different temperature,  result shows battery capacity at almost 4400mAh when fully charged, and 3200mAh when battery is 100% released.

Here is what it looks like when Graph 1 zoom in, look at line 25°(in pink) and -10°, from 99% – 100% released, battery capacity would be test as it’s between 3200mAh – 3300mAh. Look at line 0° (in green) , battery would be test as 3400mAh more or less and at 50°(in purple), battery would be 3600mAh more or less.

Normally we will only see the result tested at 25 degree as it’s the regular temperature. According to the result, the first thing we learn from this test is that battery’s actual capacity would be changed based on different temperature and the current capacity when testing, as well as tester machine and electronic current.

The second thing we learn is that, after 24 hours charging and releasing, we see that UMi TOUCH’s battery could reach up to 4400mAh and as low as 3200mAh. During the testing mostly it shows 3800 – 4000mAh. So the number stated at UMi TOUCH battery is reasonable.

We have been hearing about a rumored smartphone from UMi called as the UMi Touch X. It was said that the phone was going to be bezel-less. Now, we have new information which states that the UMi X is actually going to be called as the UMi Super and will come with much more than a bezel-less display. The upcoming device is now said to come with dual cameras at the back, a feature which only the top smartphone makers can boast of.

2016 seems to be the year of dual cameras, with this particular setup being seen on a number of smartphones lately. Dual cameras did see some popularity a couple of years back, but it soon faded away. Now, looks like manufacturers are all set to give this setup a second try, making it much better than before.

Along with the new name and the features, we also have the first image of the UMi Super. As you can see, the company seems to be experimenting with a different design than smartphone manufacturers like Huawei and LG. Instead of placing the two cameras parallel to each other, UMi Super comes with two cameras, one below the other. In between, we can see what should be a dual tone flash. Apart from the interesting dual camera design, rest of the looks seem to be similar to the recently launched UMi Touch.

Placing two cameras at the back is not an impossible task, but getting them to work together to capture the best possible images and videos is something that’s going to be a challenge for UMi. We will have to wait and see how the dual cameras on the UMi Super will work together to take pictures.

We love Mediatek SoCs for their cheap pricing and competitive performance. However, one of the biggest drawbacks of MTK based smartphones is the lack of software support. Even the latest smartphone from UMi, the UMi Touch features a MediaTek MT6753 chipset under the hood. However, that reportedly won’t be a hindrance for the company for developing CM13 for the device.

UMi is said to be working on the Android 6.0.1 based CM13 release for the UMi Touch, which would be welcome news for all Touch users. According to the company, it has finally come to an agreement and has received codes to work on the CyanogenMod OS 13.

The company seems to be focused on software updates for its new device. We have already seen the two updates for the UMi Touch within two weeks of launch via OTA. But don’t expect the CM13 OS to be released for the device very soon. While the company has not given us a time frame for the new release, we’ll probably have to wait for a few weeks at least to hear more about the OS.

Unlike some local Chinese smartphone companies, UMi seems to be spending some time developing the ROMs for its new devices. The company had promised earlier to provide timely updates for improving the overall software experience of the device and recently, the company started updating the UMi Touch to a new version. This makes it the second update for the device since its launch a few weeks back. The new update will upgrade the software to UMITOUCH.V3.03_20160409. Like the upgrade number suggests, the update started rolling out yesterday.

If you are wondering how to update your smartphone, just go to Settings > About Phone> Wireless Update > Check For Updates > Update. It’s as simple as updating any other Android smartphone, so shouldn’t be a problem for most users.

So, here are the three major improvements as revealed by the company that you will see in the new software version for the UMi Touch.

1. Optimize battery management software to improve the durability of the battery. Take you to experience the power of 4000 mAh, 24 hours 4G browsing, 60 hours 2G call time, 92 hours music playback, 15 days standby time.
2. Improve reaction speed of camera.  Take you to experience a much better 13 megapixal SONY IMX 328 CMOS, speed focusing and taking pictures.
3. Optimize the camera effect. Take you to experience a much better 13 megapixal SONY IMX 328 CMOS, stable imaging Pixel rate up to 280.8MHz 2D noise reduction.

The company urges users to immediately update their smartphones to the new version for a better experience. Further, it reveals that there are more updates on the way with better optimizations.

As for the specs, the UMi Touch comes with a 5.5-inch FHD display with a front placed fingerprint sensor. There will be 3GB of RAM, 16GB of expandable storage, 13MP Sony IMX328 camera, dual SIM support with 4G LTE and 4000mAh battery. It will be running the new Android 6.0 version out of the box.

UMi Touch is already available for pre-order via various retailers. If you were waiting for the gold version of the handset, then we have some good news. According to the latest information, the UMi Touch Gold variant will be up for pre-order very soon. If the information is correct, pre-orders for the gold version will start from April 12.

People love the gold and the rose gold variants, so it’s good to see that the Touch comes in the gold shade. The phone sports a metal unibody design which looks pretty sturdy and good looking. UMi has decided to compare the Touch’s camera with that of the Redmi Note 3 and the Xiaomi Mi 5. The comparison isn’t very thorough, but it shows a couple of pictures from the UMi Touch in direct comparison to the ones taken from the other two Xiaomi handsets. From the basic comparison, we could say that the UMi Touch managed to take darker photos with reasonable level of details, sometimes even better than Redmi Note 3. The noise was kept to a minimum in pictures where the light was not sufficient. But only after a good review from our side can we decide on the quality of the camera on the Touch.

UMi has also revealed some details on the camera UI of the device. The design is simple with 7 panes, the default one featuring a virtual shutter, flash trigger, HDR, Auto capture with gesture “Yeah” and front camera key. On top of the interface, there is the Panorama mode, picture in picture mode and the default mode. Swiping to the right brings you the choice of 9 filters with live preview. The phone can also take 1080p videos at 30fps.

UMi TOUCH turned out a real surprise and it easily ended up being one of the strongest recommendations we’ve made this season.

The affordable fella is made of metal, packs a 5.5 inch 1080p LTPS display, and runs on the Octa-core 3GB RAM. But the biggest highlight of its specs sheet is the beefy 4000 mAh battery.

The UMi TOUCH has been enhanced with the latest Android 6.0 Marshmallow core. This version of the launcher promises significant battery life optimization.

The life test video was done by 5hours heavy using mode and 10 hours standby mode, from 97% to 42% left. What I have done during this 5 hours? 30mins web browsing – 4% usage

30mins online video playback – 5% usage, it’s a okay number, 1 hour music playback – 8% usage, it’s reasonable, 1hour gaming – 10% usage, not bad! 30mins book reading – 4%, also quite reasonable, 1 hour wechating (Chinese what’s up) – 3%, that’s alright, nothing special 30 mins taking pictures & video recording – 10%, if you are photo shot lover, take a look at this number to see if it’s enough for you. 30mins talk time and so on –  spent about 8%, this could be better though.

Additionally, we did another 10 hours standby, I was sleeping when testing, which is about 3% usage. So we are happy to say UMi TOUCH could easily live up to two days use! Everybody love to have a big battery smartphone, however, we don’t want to carry a “power bank” like phone all the time. UMi TOUCH has been thoughtfully designed to keep the slim body as well as a 4000mAh big battery. You no longer need to choose between big battery or beautiful design body. For the past few days, we have been seeing reports about the upcoming smartphone from UMi called as the UMi Touch. The phone comes with a metal unibody design and the company is marketing it as your first choice of a metallic flagship. Well, the design seemed to be quite good in the pictures and from the video released by the company today, the phone also seems to be well built.

From the video, we can see that the UMi Touch will come with a CNC aluminum metal body and curved edges for better grip. The phone features a front-facing fingerprint sensor embedded into the home button, which has kind of become a trend among recent smartphones.

At the back, you have the UMi branding along with the camera and the dual LED flash. All the buttons are located on the right side of the device. This seems to be the final production sample of the UMi Touch and so far it looks pretty good. As for software, we can see the phone uses a UI close to stock. But the final optimized version loaded on the retail units could have some changes.

Coming to the specs, the UMi Touch flagship comes with an octa-core processor with 3GB of RAM on board and 16GB of expandable storage. The phone looks large in the video, owing to its 5.5-inch FHD display. However, to power the device, you also get a large battery, of 4000mAh capacity.

The UMi Touch will retail for a price tag of $149.99, which is pretty aggressive. The company will officially launch the device on March 20 and you will soon be able to pre-order the device via various resellers. Microsoft emphasized that due to the shared codebase between devices, its core apps will be very similar in functionality on phones, desktops, and tablets, albeit with design tweaks made for each form factor.

The camera app that’s bundled with Windows 10 on all smartphones as well as UMi TOUCH will be based on the enhanced Lumia Camera app recently brought to Windows Phone 8.1 Lumia devices. It’s been praised for some helpful features, like automatic HDR along with easy 4K video shooting, so that could be a nice upgrade over what some manufacturers might’ve included instead.

UMi says is possible to have Windows 10 pre-install and let users have it out of the box for UMi TOUCH. But of course it’s based on the number of demands.

The design of the Umi Iron Pro is very similar to the one we’ve seen on the regular Umi Iron. The phone made of metal, it is well constructed and feels great in the hand.

The 5.5” display does not make this phone the most compact out there but it is not that huge either.

On the top we have 8MP shooter along with the front firing LED light and some other usual stuff.

On the bottom there is a very nice looking pulsing notification LED light, which can be highly customised and it has various colours. Also, there are on-screen navigation buttons.

The back is made of metal and it is identical to the Umi Iron except for the fingerprint scanner. The setup of it was a bit annoying and it took much more time in comparison to some other devices. The good point is that once the you register your fingerprint, the scanner works pretty well and you can also unlock your phone straight from the standby mode.

As far as optics, we are looking at 13MP camera with dual tone dual LED flash.

On the bottom there is a speaker grill.

The buttons are placed on the left side and I’m not a huge fan of it as I am used to pressing keys on the right side but this may be my personal preference. On the right side there is a dual nano SIM card slot and one slot also doubles as microSD storage expansion option.

On the top there is a headset jack and on the bottom you can find a USB Type-C port.

Overall, Umi Iron Pro is a well designed phone and it sports a great built quality. Also, it definitely looks premium considering the price of the device.

Umi Iron Pro Review: DISPLAY

As far as display, we are looking at 5.5” panel, which is quite bright, it has good colours and it is a great panel overall. However, the phone ships with some sort of anti-glare screen protector, which I definitely recommend removing as soon as you start using the phone as it distorts the view.

When it comes to the UI, Umi Iron Pro runs on Android 5.1 out of the box with a light Umi’s skin on top of it.

The day-to-day performance is nice and smooth even after installing lots of apps.

The key features would be some customisation options of the LED light, which is really cool and I believe each manufacturer should include that.

Also, there are some gesture controls, which work pretty well but they are not the fastest I’ve seen.

Besides the fingerprint security option, Umi offers iris scanner feature, if you really care about it. It may be cool to play with it for a few times but in general, it doesn’t make a lot of sense to me as it takes too much effort unlocking the phone and you simply look weird. Well, it’s just my opinion.

Umi Iron Pro Review: HARDWARE and PERFORMANCE

Umi Iron Pro sports an octa-core MTK6753 1.3GHz 64bit CPU, 3GB of RAM and 16GB of expandable storage. 

This combo of hardware looks pretty good on paper but disappoints when it comes to graphically intensive games. 

Playing Asphalt 8 on the highest visual setting is literally impossible. Once you change the graphics level to medium, it is possible to play it but there are still quite a few skipped frames and stutter. 

Overall, this phone is definitely not for hardcore gamers. 

Umi Iron Pro Review: MULTIMEDIA

Consuming multimedia is a pretty good experience. As usual, there are no issues watching Full-HD content and while the loudspeaker is not the best I’ve heard, the sound that is coming out of it is pretty good.

As far as sound via earphones, it is pretty good too. However, the thing I hate most is the fact that you hear some kind of weird beep sound once hit volume up or down… and it happens randomly.

Umi Iron Pro Review: CAMERA

As far as camera, we have a pretty much stock looking Mediatek app. What’s funny is the fact that you can select the image size up to 20MP while the sensor itself is just 13MP.

As far as the image quality, daylight pictures turn out to be pretty good. There is a reasonable amount of details, colour reproduction is mostly natural and dynamic range is okay.

However, as soon as the sensor does not get a lot of light, some more noise creeps in. Still, you may get some pretty good looking pictures. Also,  I was quite impressed by the quality of some macro shots.

When it comes to the low-light images, the camera software tends to brighten up the scene, which is okay but it leads to a ridiculous amount of noise. Well, most of the images will be usable for social media but others may even look like painted.

As far as selfie camera goes, you can only take a decent shot with plenty of lightning. Otherwise, you will get a blurry shot witch will also lack in details.

As far as video, the quality of footage is okay but it is not very  impressive. There is an average amount of details and the video looks quite shaky. See the video review for a video sample.

Umi Iron Pro Review: CONNECTIVITY

All the connectivity options work well. However, the in-call volume could be a tad louder.

The battery capacity varies from 3100mAh to 3300mAh, which is quite interesting. The phone will get you through the day as I was able to achieve almost 4 hours of screen-on time while using the device mainly for basic tasks.

Umi Iron Pro Review: CONCLUSIONS

Umi Iron Pro is another attempt by the company to win the consumers’ hearts. Did they succeed?

To some extent yes. The phone has a great metal design, good build quality and it feels great in the hand.

Also, Umi Iron Pro sports a pretty good display, the UI performance is mostly fast and fluid, the fingerprint scanner works well.

While the camera is not bad but it is far from perfect and the quality of images will mostly depend on the lighting conditions.

Also, if you are a hardcore gamer, Umi Iron Pro is definitely not for you unless you are okay with a laggy 3D gaming experience.

All in all, Umi Iron Pro is a decent device for the price $180 but you may also want to check out what the competition has to offer in this price range.

The phone has 5.5″ display and it makes the phone quite huge but it is easily manageable in one hand due to great ergonomics of the device.

On the front we have an 8MP shooter, LED flash and other usual stuff. On the bottom we have on-screen navigation keys. Also, there is a nice looking skyline-type pulsing notification LED light.

As the name implies, the phone is made almost entirely of metal (except for the top and bottom parts for antennas). I have to say that the choice of metal definitely makes the phone look and feel great in the hand.

As far as optics, we have a 13MP Sony IMX214 sensor, which is accompanied by dual tone dual LED flash. Right underneath it there is a fingerprint scanner. It was a bit cumbersome to setup but it works quite well in real life.

Umi Iron Pro: FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Overall, Umi Iron is well constructed device and I see an improvement over the older Umi Iron in terms of the precision in the build quality. For example, the top and bottom parts, which are made of plastic, are perfectly aligned with the metal backplate. The same goes for the sides and other parts of the phone. All in all, Umi Iron has an impressive build quality and great choice of materials especially if we think of the price point of this phone.

I have already spent a few days with the device, installed all the usual apps, played with the camera etc. So far, the performance has been good. However, I need to spend a bit more time with the phone (as usual) to tell you my final thoughts.
