Nothing CEO Carl Pei Poses with a Phone (1) Clone at MWC 2023

The Nothing Phone (1) had launched with a breath of fresh air to a market that many considered to be over saturated with devices that looked quite similar to one another. However, it seems that even this device wasn’t unique for too long.

In a series of tweets, the CEO and Founder of the London based tech firm, Carl Pei, shared images that showed him posing with the Phone (1) and its supposed clone. The senior official of the company spotted the look alike device during the MWC 2023 event, which is being hosted in Barcelona. The device in question is the Unihertz Luna and the images shared by Carl Pei shows an LED design that is clearly inspired by the Glyph interface on the Nothing Phone (1).

Nothing

While its layout isn’t identical, the idea of using long LED strips on the back is clearly inspired by the Phone (1). The Glyph interface functioned by lighting up to inform users of incoming notifications, calls, and more. Although, it is still unclear what purpose the LEDs on the Unihertz Luna serve on the back. Apart from the design, the two smartphones aren’t similar in many other aspects.

The Luna features a Helio G99 SoC, 8GB of RAM, 256GB storage, 18W charging, 3.5mm headphone jack, and even a 108 megapixel primary camera on the rear. Finer details regarding this device is still unclear, but it appears that the company will share the launch date sometime soon. A Unihertz representative at the major event did state that the device will launch in March 2023 and will cost “no more than $300.”

Redmi teases 300W Fast Charging, Charges Phone from 0 to 100% In 5 Mins

Xiaomi is apparently working on surpassing the boundaries in charging technologies again. The company’s budget sub brand Redmi has announced that it is working on a new 300W fast charging tech that will break past all high standards of the market as of right now. So here are all the details.

Interestingly enough, the Chinese tech giant’s announcement for the 300W fast charging technology arrives mere four months after the first brand unveiled the first smartphone that crossed the 200W charging mark. The device in question is the Realme GT Neo 5 (Realme GT 3 in the global market), which supports an impressive 240W fast charging. Now, the Xiaomi subsidiary has revealed that it is working on a device that can charge from 0 percent to 100 percent in just under five minutes.

Redmi

The company teased this technology by using a modified Redmi Note 12 Discovery smartphone that is equipped with a 4,100mAh battery pack instead of the retail model’s 4,300mAh cell. In just 2 minutes and 11 seconds, the device managed to hit 50 percent charge level, with a full charge being reached in just under 5 minutes. Looking at the video teaser shared on Weibo, we can see the device hitting 290W charging rate for about three seconds at its peak.

In other words, it is basically a 300W charger that caps out likely due to safety reasons or battery health protection. The adapter for such an impressive charger comes with double GaN technology, which the company claims has “more than 50 safety protections” despite featuring a compact form factor. But unfortunately, Redmi has yet to announce when it will unveil such a smartphone, but the teaser confirms that the technology is basically ready and we can expect it to hit the market soon.

Samsung Is Working on an AR Based Galaxy Glasses & Galaxy Ring for Health Tracking

Samsung might be planning on launching brand new line of devices that diversify its wearable category outside of its Galaxy Watch series. The company is apparently working on an AR based Galaxy Glasses and even a Galaxy Ring that can track your health.

Samsung

The South Korean tech has filed for two new trademark applications. These trademarks were filed for a Galaxy Ring and a pair of Galaxy Glasses. The upcoming glasses gadget could be similar to the rumored Apple AR/VR headset, meaning, it could also feature either mixed reality or extended reality headset, which was teased during the Galaxy Unpacked event at the beginning of this month.

Furthermore, the company has also been granted the Galaxy Ring trademark by KIPRIS (Korea Intellectual Property Rights Information Service) on February 23. The Galaxy Ring classifications decribes the products as a “smart device for measuring health indicators and/or sleep in the form of [a] ring.” Unfortunately, the KIPRIS application didn’t reveal any other finer details regarding this upcoming device apart from its name. Although, based on the description, we can assume that the Ring will simply monitor wearer’s health and physical activities similar to a smartwatch.

Samsung

On the other hand, Samsung has officially unveiled that it is working on the XR (extended reality) headset at the Unpacked event at February 1. The brand is partnering with Google and Qualcomm to build this headset, and now, the KIPRIS filing does hint that the upcoming gadget’s name could be called “Galaxy Glasses.”

Foldables See Its First Ever Decline in Q4 2022, Galaxy Z Fold 4 Shipments Drop 50%

The smartphone market has been experiencing a remarkable surge in recent years, with the emergence of new technologies and innovative designs captivating consumers around the world. Among the most talked-about advancements is the foldable smartphone, which has seen steady growth in shipments over the past year. However, a recent report by Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) indicates a decline in sales during the fourth quarter of 2022.

Foldable Smartphone Oppo

According to the report, foldable smartphone shipments fell by 48% compared to the previous quarter and 26% compared to the same period in 2021, with a total of 3.1 million units shipped from October to December 2022. Despite this setback, foldable phone shipments for the entire year rose by an impressive 62%, reaching 12.9 million units.

Samsung continued to dominate the foldable phone market in 2022, with an 83% market share. This was a slight dip from the third quarter’s 86% and a significant drop from the 96% share that the company held in the fourth quarter of 2021. The decline was attributed to a 50% drop in the shipment volume of the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4, which were released during the previous quarter.

The report also noted that Apple’s recently released iPhone 14 series overshadowed Samsung’s foldable phones in the fourth quarter of 2022. Huawei and Oppo followed Samsung in the global foldable phone market, while the Galaxy Z Flip was the top-selling foldable phone worldwide, with a 47% market share.

DSCC predicts a continued soft trend in foldable shipments during the current quarter, with a 3% decline in year-over-year deliveries of foldable handsets worldwide. However, this trend is expected to reverse in the second quarter of 2023, with the release of new foldable phones from Samsung and Vivo. Additionally, Oppo and Vivo are set to launch clamshell models in more markets at more affordable prices later this year. DSCC anticipates total foldable shipments to surpass 17 million units worldwide in 2023.

Samsung Display remains the leading display supplier in the foldable phone market, responsible for 81% of foldable displays used in the fourth quarter of 2022, followed by Chinese supplier BOE at 17%. Despite this, DSCC predicts Samsung will maintain or grow its share of foldable display shipments in 2023, with a forecasted growth of over 20 million units in the upcoming year.

In conclusion, while there was a dip in foldable phone sales in the fourth quarter of 2022, the market is expected to bounce back in the coming months, with new models set to be released by major manufacturers. The foldable phone market remains an exciting and rapidly evolving space that will undoubtedly continue to captivate consumers in the years to come.

Mystery Google Pixel Phone spotted at FCC, Could be Pixel 7a

Four variants of an upcoming Google Pixel phone have been found in the FCC certification platform database. The three variants have model numbers, such as  G0DZQGHL1X, and GWKK3. Each one of them has a separate listing at FCC. One of them mentions the model number of the device as G82U8.

The following document submitted to the FCC reads, “FCC ID: A4RG0DZQ (parent model for NFC), FCC ID: A4RGWKK3 (parent model for BT/WLAN) and FCC ID: A4RGHL1X (variant model) use the same identical internal printed circuit board layouts, while the variant models depopulates mmWave related components and populated a different MHB ENDC module, details are available in the operational description.”

Spotify Ditching the Heart for a Plus Button with Enhanced Functionality

Spotify is one of the most widely used music streaming applications in the world. There is a vast selection of music and podcasts to stream on the app. To ensure that users can easily listen to their favorite tracks and episodes on more than one occasion, they can save them directly to their Library. Where users previously tapped the Heart icon to save their songs to their “Liked Songs” list and the “Add to playlist” icon to add tracks or podcast episodes to their preferred playlist, the functionality will now be accessed via a single button, the Plus button.

Spotify Plus Button

Spotify is introducing a more streamlined experience by consolidating the Heart icon and the “Add to playlist” icon into a single symbol for the sake of convenience, it seems. Users can tap the Plus (+) button, and you can save and choose the destination for any song, playlist, or podcast with ease. The company stated that its move is committed towards making it easier for its users to engage with their music and podcasts.

Here are some new ways to use Spotify’s integrated Plus (+) button:

  • Tap to save: To save a song or podcast episode, users tap the Plus (+) button to the right of the title in the Now Playing window. Once they have added their selection to Liked Songs (or Your Episodes), the Plus (+) button will transform into a green checkmark. Users can further change the destination of their saved content by tapping the green check again.
  • Add a whole album to Your Library: With one click of the Plus (+) button, users can add their favorite album, playlist, or audiobook to “Your Library”. Once it has been successfully added, a green checkmark will appear right next to it.

During their user research period, the company found that the new Plus (+) button upgrade saved time and allowed users to add to multiple playlists simultaneously, which is an added benefit. Moreover, saving songs and podcasts makes users more likely to listen to them again, which ultimately results in more streams for the artists and shows people have discovered. Additionally, everything you have already saved to your Liked Songs or Your Episodes will still be available.

This feature will be rolled out to all users globally on mobile (iOS and Android) starting today and will become available to all Spotify users in the coming weeks. Time will tell if users will respond positively to this change since Spotify recently modified their Now Playing UI a bit and not everyone was a huge fan of it.

Ubisoft to Release Nine More Assassin’s Creed Games, Six Currently in Development

Assassin’s Creed is a beloved action-adventure franchise that has been around for more than a decade, and it seems that Ubisoft has no intention of slowing down. According to a recent report from Insider Gaming, the publisher is planning on releasing at least nine more Assassin’s Creed games in the coming years, with six currently in development.

Assassin's Creed

The French game publishing company has released 12 Assassin’s Creed games so far, with the first game released in the year 2007. Some 16 years later, the first of these upcoming games is Assassin’s Creed Mirage, which is expected to be released sometime in August of this year. This game is said to bring the series back to its roots, and fans are eagerly awaiting its release. Interestingly, it will be followed by an Assassin’s Creed VR game, which will be announced at E3 and released in the same year. This is a little reminiscent of Valve releasing a VR sequel to Half-Life, Half-Life Alyx in order to maintain its appeal for its VR fanbase.

The next game, Codename Red, is set to feature ninjas in Japan and will have a strong focus on stealth. It’s rumored to be released in 2024, followed by the multiplayer title Assassin’s Creed ‘Invictus’ in 2025, and Codename Hexe in 2026. Codename Jade is also in development, but its release date is still unknown.

But that’s not all. Ubisoft reportedly has three more Assassin’s Creed games in the planning stages. Each of these games will feature a unique spin on the franchise and different gameplay from other titles. Project Nebula, for instance, will take place in India, the Aztec Empire, and the Mediterranean, while Project Raid will be a PvE-based free-to-play game with 4-player co-op mode. Project Echoes is another multiplayer title in the franchise.

It’s clear that Ubisoft is going all-in on Assassin’s Creed, and fans of the series have plenty to look forward to. The publisher plans to release a new game in the franchise every year, with each major entry significantly different from the last to keep things fresh. With so many games in development, it’s an exciting time to be an Assassin’s Creed fan.

Huawei Watch GT Cyber Unveiled at MWC 2023, Features Unique Customization Options

Smartwatches have become increasingly popular in recent years, thanks to their ability to combine fitness tracking, communication, and timekeeping in a single device. A number of new smartphones and other devices were unveiled at the MWC 2023. The Huawei Watch GT Cyber is one of the latest additions to this market, offering a unique twist on the concept of interchangeable straps. Unlike most smartwatches, which allow you to swap out the straps for different colors or materials, the Watch GT Cyber features a detachable casing, allowing you to completely change the look of the watch in seconds.

Huawei Watch Cyber GT

This innovative design means that there are a total of six different casing and strap options available, split into Sport and Urban collections. The former features a durable fibre-reinforced composite case, while the latter boasts premium stainless steel and ceramic finishes. The interactive watch faces will change depending on which casing you snap on, and it’s even possible to swap out the crown if that is something you want to do.

Aside from its unique design, the Watch GT Cyber boasts impressive specifications. It features a sharp 1.32-inch AMOLED display with a 466 x 466 resolution touch-sensitive panel, and has been through 16 durability tests, the company states. The smartwatch also offers 5ATM waterproofing and has a battery life of up to seven days.

In terms of health and fitness tracking, the Watch GT Cyber features all of Huawei’s TruSeen monitoring, including TruSleep, and offers a range of workout options. It also includes Bluetooth calling and a wrist-based assistant and can be seamlessly paired with Android or iOS phones using the Huawei Health platform.

If you are looking to get your hands on the new Huawei Watch GT Cyber, the availability may vary based on where you live. While the Watch GT Cyber is already available in China and some parts of Southeast Asia, it’s not currently planned for release in Europe or the US. However, if someone is lucky enough to live in an area where the Watch GT Cyber is available, they will find that each box contains one smartwatch module and two casing and strap options, allowing them to enjoy two looks in one box. Additional casing and strap options can be purchased separately from Huawei’s official website.
