Xiaomi has just learned the importance of using the correct grammar when interfacing with English fans. Some fans took to Twitter to voice their anger over the immediate stock depletion, with one fan even going into the website code, revealing the page was programmed to show Out Of Stock once the Order button was clicked. Wilkin Lee, Sales and Marketing Director of Xiaomi UK clarified in a reply to a tweet that out of the thousands who clicked “Buy” simultaneously, the tie-breaker was done by random selection, even though the Terms & Conditions said winners would be selected on a first come, first serve basis. A complaint was even sent to UK’s regulator of advertising, the Advertising Standards Authority.

Apparently, the fans thought this was the usual flash sale with a sizable available stock. These misgivings have prompted the Chinese giant to issue an open apology. In an official statement, Xiaomi UK disclosed that the team “did not realize that the public associates this term (flash sale) with a very particular type of deal that Xiaomi has run in the past across different global markets, where more than 10 devices were available.”

Despite this hiccup, Xiaomi phones are now available in the UK via the company’s website as well as Carphone Warehouse, Three and other partners. In addition, Xiaomi will open its first Authorised bricks and mortar Mi Store on Sunday at Westfield London.

Global smart speaker shipments grew 197% in Q3 2018, Xiaomi takes the fifth position

A latest quarterly report from research firm Strategy Analytics shows that the global smart speaker shipments grew at an astonishing rate of 197 percent year-on-year, reaching a record 22.7 million units in the third quarter of 2018.

With such growth, it is on track to surpass 100 million units in use during the final quarter of this year. According to Canalys, the market grew 187 percent in Q2 2018, with shipments of 16.8 million units.

David Mercer, Vice President at Strategy Analytics, said:

The number of smart speakers in use globally will crash through the 100 million unit barrier this month and exceed 125 million by the end of the year. The market has reached this key milestone faster than pretty much any other consumer technology device to have launched over the past decade.

In Q3 2018, the category was led by Amazon with over 32 percent market share and 7.2 million shipments. The second position was grabbed by Google that holds around 23 percent market share and shipped 5.2 million units.

Alibaba ranks third with 9.5 percent market share and 2.2 million shipments. Another Chinese brand, Baidu, was the biggest mover in the quarter with an increase in its market share from 1 percent in Q2 2018 to 8 percent in Q3 2018 and 1.9 million shipments.

After Alibaba and Baidu, China-based Xiaomi stands fifth with 8.4 percent market and 1.9 million shipments — same as Baidu. This is a significant increase in shipments from Xiaomi as it reportedly shipped 0.1 million units in Q3 2017. Apple holds the sixth position with 4.8 percent market share and 1.1 million shipments.

China has emerged this year as the second largest market for smart speakers after the USA. Strategy Analytics is forecasting a twelve-fold annual increase in Chinese shipments for the year 2018. The North America market is still being dominated by Amazon and Google in this category.

From the report, it seems that the three Chinese companies — Alibaba, Baidu, and Xiaomi are in a three-way battle to get the pole position in the smart speakers market, with a heavy focus in the Chinese market which is mainly driven by low pricing and heavy discounting.

Huawei to release head-mounted AR glasses within the next two years

In order to deal with future prospects, Huawei is already working quite hard to bring AR, VR to their devices. Previously, they have added AI, AR in their latest flagship Mate 20 Pro. Although it seems Huawei doesn’t want to remain in just apps or smartphones market, they want to enter AR glasses market in the next couple of years. In an interview speaking to CNBC, Richard Yu, CEO of the company’s consumer group said that they are working on AR glasses and it would be ready for commercialization in the next few years.

On a broader perspective, Richard Yu confirmed that Huawei is working to bring AR experience to the next level by introducing wearable spectacles. It will directly resemble AR Google Glasses and Microsoft HoloLens giving a similar experience, but there will be a considerable advancement this time. Many new things have been refined over the past, and we hope Huawei to come up with more useful AR glasses.

Talking about it, Yu said, “With this AR, you can have AR glasses working with phone, maybe you can watch more of a large area.”

Richard Yu added that the AR would not see much use in the beginning but in future, you will see more value for it. It is the sole reason that Huawei has started to implement the new AR, VR techniques in its latest smartphones. Huawei wants users to become accustomed to it before scratching further into the AR.

Honor 10 Lite key specifications leaked; Reservations begin on VMall

The Honor 10 Lite will be officially announced on Nov. 21. The handset has already appeared on TENAA, but its specs are yet to appear on the website of the Chinese telecom authority. Huawei’s sub-brand has already started with the reservations of the smartphone which will continue until its launch date. The reservations page of the Honor 10 Lite has reportedly revealed some of its key specs.

The Honor 10 Lite will be debuting as a lighter version of the Kirin 970 powered Honor 10 flagship phone that was announced in May this year. According to Android Pure, the Honor 10 Lite will be featuring a 5.84-inch display that will carry support for Full HD+ resolution. The Kirin 710 chipset is expected to power the smartphone. The handset is expected to arrive with Android 9 Pie OS along with EMIUI 9.0 preinstalled. The GPU Turbo technology that accelerates the GPU performance will be available on the device.

For shooting selfies, the Honor 10 Lite is expected to feature a 24-megapixel front-facing camera. The back panel of the phone is rumored to be equipped with an f/1.8 aperture 13-megapixel primary sensor and a 2-megapixel secondary sensor. It could be featuring a 3,320mAh battery.

The Honor 10 Lite has already appeared on TENAA with its front and rear images. Apart from dual cameras, the smartphone is equipped with a fingerprint scanner on its back panel. The smartphone is expected to arrive in attractive color gradient options.

Samsung announces Exynos 9820 8nm chipset with NPU and 40% better GPU performance

Today, Samsung has officially unveiled its next-generation mobile chipset — Samsung Exynos 9820 in China carrying a tagline that reads “Extraordinary wisdom, born from the inside.”

The new chipset from Samsung is manufactured using 8nm LPP FinFET process, which the company says consumes 10 percent less power compared to the 10nm process. For comparison, Huawei‘s Kirin 980 and Apple‘s A12 Bionic chipsets are manufactured using the 7nm process.

Samsung Exynos 9820 has a tri-cluster architecture with the fourth generation custom designed CPU cores. It consists of two custom cores for processing power, two Cortex A75 large cores for optimal performance, and four Cortex A55 small cores for greater efficiency.

As per the company, compared to the Exynos 9810, the multi-core performance increased by 15 percent and single-core performance increased by 20 percent. The overall performance of this new chipset is 40 percent better than its predecessor, claims Samsung.

The chipset comes with the Mali-G76 MP12 graphics processor, which has more execution units and double channels. It is claimed to offer 40 percent better performance than the GPU in Exynos 9810 and is also said to be 35 percent more energy efficient. For comparison, the Kirin 980 chipset features Mali-G76 MP10 GPU.

For the first time, the Exynos 9-series chipset from Samsung comes with Neural Processing Unit (NPU) which is said to offer seven times artificial intelligence-based computing power compared to its predecessor.

Coming to the photography, the Exynos 9820 chipset has advanced ISP that supports up to five sensing elements, including infrared sensors for enabling facial recognition. For the front-facing camera, it supports camera sensor of up to 22MP and the same 22MP for the rear camera. It also supports dual-camera setup with a maximum of a 16MP camera sensor. For video recording, the chipset supports 8K 30fps and 4K 120fps and also supports 10bit HEVC/H.264/VP9 codec.

For the display, the chipset supports 4K resolution. As for connectivity, the new chipset from Samsung supports 4G LTE baseband with highest downlink Cat.20 8CA that supports peak speed of 2Gbps and uplink speed of up to 316Mbps. It also supports UFS 2.1/3.0 flash memory and there’s also a hardware-level PUF key management.

The Samsung Exynos 9820 flagship chipset from the South Korean giant will be mass produced by the end of this year and is expected to be used in the company’s upcoming smartphone — Galaxy S10 — which could be unveiled in February next year during Mobile World Congress.

Walter Ji has revealed that Huawei will be focusing on its flagship devices in 2019 and it the company is aiming to launch its first foldable phone with 5G support in the first half of the coming year. The Huawei P20 Pro phone that was released this year is the world’s first smartphone to feature triple rear cameras. In 2019, Huawei will be launching a smartphone with four rear cameras. There is no confirmation on whether it will be available on the Huawei P30 Pro smartphone. Walter Ji has claimed that the company is working on bringing 10x optical zoom support on a smartphone.

Ji is of the view that the 5G will considerably change the smartphone usage as high speed data will allow users to avail content directly from the cloud without the need of downloading. Since 5G won’t be available everywhere in 2019, AI cannot be outsourced to the cloud. Hence, the company is parallelly developing on-device AI through Kirin processor’s NPU unit and cloud AI to make it available to the user at any time. In 2019, AI will play key role in improving photography experience and battery performance on Huawei devices.

Huawei will not be focusing on entry-level segment in 2019. Also, the Chinese firm won’t be launching Android One phones which means that all the Huawei phones coming in 2019 will not deliver stock Android experience.

Few months ago, Vivo had launched the Vivo Y81 smartphone in Asian markets like India and Vietnam. Fresh information shared by 91 Mobiles reveals that the Chinese manufacturer is gearing up to launch its newer variant called Vivo Y81i. The handset is expected to be priced under Rs. 10,000 in India.

The Vivo Y81i is not an entirely new smartphone since it has already gone official in Malaysia in the previous month. The Vivo Y81i is a lower version of the Vivo Y81. It comes with a notched screen and a single rear camera like the Y81 smartphone.

According to the publication, the Vivo Y81i will be featuring a 6.22-inch Full View display that will deliver HD+ resolution. The phone may is expected to deliver a screen-to-body ratio of 88 percent. The MediaTek MT6761 which seems to be a lower version of the Helio A22 (MT6762) is present under the hood of the device.

The SoC will be assisted by 2 GB of RAM. It will include an inbuilt storage of 16 GB. For photography, the handset will be featuring an f/2.2 aperture 5-megapixel selfie camera with AI Face Beauty feature and a rear-mounted 13-megapixel camera. There is no fingerprint scanner on the device, but it carries support for face unlock through the front camera. The handset will be backed by a 3,260mAh battery and it will be weighing 143 grams.

The Vivo Y81i will be loaded with Android 8.1 Oreo OS that will be overlaid with FunTouh OS 4.0 UI. The phone will feature a Motorbike Mode that will assist users to avoid phone calls while riding a bike. The FCC documents reveal that the Nokia TA-1136 has 1 GB of RAM and it includes an internal storage of 16 GB. The FCC listings also reveal that it is electronically same as the Nokia 2.1 variant that has a model number of TA-1084. The Nokia 2.1 that was announced in May this year has 8 GB of ROM. Hence, the TA-1136 that includes double the storage of Nokia 2.1 may hit the market with Nokia2.1 Plus moniker.

As far as specs are concerned, the FCC documents do not contain much information on it. The only additional details that have been found in the FCC listing of the TA-1136 is that it carries support for 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi connectivity. So, there is no dual-band 5GHz Wi-Fi support on the device. HMD Global will be disabling some of the network bands on the device because of which it won’t be available in the U.S.

The Nokia 2.1 runs on Android Go version of Android 8.1 Oreo OS. It features a 5.5-inch display that carries support for HD resolution of 720 x 1480 pixels. The modest Snapdragon 425 chipset that includes 1.4 GHz quad-core processor is the driving force of the smartphone.

The handset is fitted with a front-facing camera of 5-megapixel and a rear shooter of 8-megapixel. Apart from 8 GB of internal storage, the device offers additional space through microSD card slot. It is packed with a 4,000mAh capacity battery.

Essential launches Audio Adapter HD for $149, its second mod for the PH-1

After more than a year since the release of the Essential PH-1, Essential has released the Audio Adapter HD, its second mod for the phone. The first is the Essential 360 Camera, which is the world’s smallest 4K 360° camera.

To put it simply, the Audio Adapter HD adds an audio jack to the phone. A feature believed to be essential but which is missing from the phone. However, the Audio Adapter HD does more than just add an audio jack to your phone.

The adapter has a “high-resolution ESS Sabre DAC (Digital-to-Analog Converter) with hardware MQA (Master Quality Authenticated) rendering for high-res audio on the PH-1“. This means that audio sounds exactly the way it was recorded with no loss of quality whatsoever. Essential says it is the first DAC to have this feature.

The company has now launched the Yang Zi leather sofa set under the crowdfunding platform. It uses American first-layer cowhide, natural fine leather fibre which is soft and comfortable to sit on. The leather has a thickness of 1.3mm-1.5mm. Xiaomi Mi Band 3 NFC update brings support for Chang’An card and add blank card function

On May 31 when Xiaomi announced the Mi Band 3 alongside the Mi 8, the event was full of surprises. First was the Mi 8 Explorer edition with a cool translucent rear panel. The company also announced an NFC version of the Mi Band 3 which can power cardless payments on compatible platforms. It took a long while after its launch for the Mi Band 3 NFC version could become available to buy but it is presently in use. Xiaomi has now announced a new update for the NFC version.

The new update brings two new features, one of which is support for Chang’An card. The card is a universal electronic toll collection system in use in the city of is Xi’an and can be used to pay for various services in the city including utility bills. The second feature is the ability to add a blank NFC card. This would allow the card to be used by a third-party elsewhere.

Apart from these new features, the Mi Band 3 NFC version can be used for contactless payments using Mi Pay in China. Apart from Mi-Pay, the version can be used for bus card and subway ticket payment. The bus card feature will be enabled for use in 167 cities in China, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Wuhan, Tianjin, and several others. Xiaomi released the list of the first batch of bus credit cards that are supported and they are eight in all for now. The NFC version is also compatible with non-Xiaomi NFC smartphones and may likely work with other NFC compatible platforms outside China.

In addition to the bus card payment and other contactless payments that NFC powers, the Mi Band 3 NFC version retains all the features of the standard version. The new version features a 0.78-inch OLED display with a resolution of 128×80pixels. The device offers a battery life of up to 20 days with normal usage. You also get water resistance, heart rate monitoring, sleep tracking, steps counter, sedentary reminder, call and message notification. Design

Vivo Z1 Lite beats almost the whole concurrency with its wonderful design. It has a display with very narrow bezels and a minimal notch, as well as a reflective glass back which is also available in a very elegant gradient hue (Aurora Blue). The second place goes to Honor 8C, while Xiaomi Redmi 6 Pro is definitely less beautiful with its full metal unibody design.

Display

Honor 8C loses the display comparison as its resolution is only HD, while Vivo Z1 Lite wins again for having a Full HD+ resolution, a larger diagonal and narrower bezels. On the other hand, Xiaomi Redmi 6 Pro has a smaller panel which is more suitable for one-handed use. And it features a Full HD+ resolution as well.

Specs & Software

Huawei Honor 8C has the most powerful and recent SoC, so it should be the best one in terms of performance and efficiency, especially if we consider that it has to manage a display with a lower resolution. We are talking about the new Snapdragon 632 chipset which is a toned down version of the Snapdragon 636 found on devices like Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro. However, note that Vivo Z1 Lite comes with max 32 GB of internal storage, while Huawei Honor 8C and Xiaomi Redmi 6 Pro have 64 GB variants. All of these devices have a customized Android version: Funtouch OS for the Z1, EMUI for Honor 8C and MIUI for Xiaomi Redmi 6 Pro. But the latter has an international version called Mi A2 Lite with Android One.

Camera

The most convincing rear camera is the dual setup of the Honor 8C thanks to a brighter aperture which should allow capturing more light. On the other hand, Vivo Z1 Lite is a more interesting smartphone for selfies thanks to its 16 MP front camera which also supports important AI-based features. Xiaomi Redmi 6 Pro has a below-average dual camera which is just sufficient for the price range, and its front camera did not convince us as well.

Battery

The battery is the strongest point of the Xiaomi Redmi 6 Pro. It features a huge 4000 mAh unit paired with one of the most efficient chipsets in the market: the Snapdragon 625. This battery allows achieving a very long battery life: it can last up to two days on a single charge even with a stressed use. But Huawei Honor 8C has a 4000 mAh as well, and it also features a display with a low resolution besides a very efficient SoC. So it can last a bit more in most of the scenarios. Vivo Z1 Lite has a way smaller battery which does not allow it to take part in this fight.

Price

Vivo Z1 Lite just debuted in China with a price tag of €140/$160, Huawei Honor 8C is sold at about €170/$191 and Xiaomi Redmi 6 Pro ranges from €160/$180 to €200/$225 depending on the channel. Even though it has a worse display, I think Honor 8C is currently the phone with the best value for money due to its good camera department, balanced specs, and very long battery life. But there are very marginal differences between these devices, so, whichever you choose, you will make a good choice.

Samsung will unveil its next flagship phones, the Galaxy S10 series in less than five months. And as the date draws closer, so also do the leaks about the devices increase. Fresh details about the Galaxy S10 have surfaced and they reveal some key specs of the phone.

The details were shared on Twitter by Evan Blass (@evleaks) and they cover the display, cameras, and even the phone’s user interface.

The Galaxy S10 will have a hole in its display for the selfie camera. In Evan’s words, it features a “Punch hole” style selfie camera cutout. Going by this, we are pretty sure the phone will make use of the Infinity O display unveiled at the developer conference last week.

Few preliminary Galaxy S10 details:

The hole in the display isn’t the only thing you should look forward to. Evan also said the Galaxy S10 will sport an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint scanner. We can all agree Samsung is late to the party but better late than never, right? Galaxy S8/S8+/Note8 users who plan to upgrade next year can rest assured that the fingerprint scanner is no longer in an awkward position.

Another big info revealed by Evan Blass is related to the camera. The Galaxy S10 will have three cameras on the rear just like the Galaxy A7 (2018) however, the sensors will be different. Unlike the Galaxy A7 which has a wide + ultrawide + depth sensor arrangement, the S10 will have a standard + wide + telephoto setup. This is the same arrangement Huawei adopted for the P20 Pro.

The major aim of Xiaomi‘s smart home brand is to create a connected home where all the gadgets interact and can be controlled from a central hub. The company’s product catalogue already includes several smart home gadgets and each day, more gets added, some under the crowdfunding platform. The latest is the Tinymu smart toilet seat cover with artificial intelligence and Xiaomi’s XiaoAI voice assistance.

This isn’t the first smart toilet seat cover that Xiaomi is launching. It is actually the third of such products. There is the Tinymu smart cover with a lesser 1,199 yuan price tag and a Tinymu smart toilet cover lite priced at 799 yuan. This new version is obviously an upgraded version of the first model with the stand out feature being the artificial intelligence feature as well as the voice assistant. Unfortunately, XiaoAI assistant is still adapted for Chinese speakers only and is yet to get support for English language or any other language. So that function will only be available in Chinese. The voice assistance feature lets users control the gadget using voice prompts to activate certain functions like flushing, switch on the seat heater etc. The smart toilet seat can also be connected to the MIJIA app which will let users control the app. The device also supports wristband user identification for Mi Band series users. Thus, it actively adjusts to your personalized settings (washing position, water temperature, water flow intensity, etc.) without having to adjust the settings repeatedly.

In terms of design, the Tinymu smart toilet seat has an ergonomic 3D curved seat design which is used to make the sitting posture more comfortable. For those who spend so much time on the toilet seat, it will beep when it is seated for 30 minutes. In addition, the seat ring has 3 speeds that can be adjusted to prevent low-temperature burning. The operator panel has a simple interface and has Braille prompts for visually challenged users. In addition, the ceramic heater comes with a dual heating module which is used to instantly heat the cold water to a comfortable temperature, adjust the position of the 11-step nozzle, and cooperate with the reciprocating cleaning mode to expand the clear range and clean more thoroughly. The seat surface comes with imported polyethylene ultrafiltration membrane filter with an effective inhibition rate of 99.9% against E. coli and also solve the risk of contact cross infection. There is an imported deodorant fan which immediately absorbs the unpleasant smell after the user stands up.
