Last month, on 25th October, Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi announced its next-generation Mi MIX series smartphone — the Xiaomi Mi MIX 3. It is the first smartphone to feature a magnetic slider design with a full-screen display.

During the launch, Xiaomi confirmed that it will be releasing a 5G version of the Mi MIX 3 in the first quarter of 2019. With the launch of the 5G model of Mi MIX 3 nearing, details related to the device is now surfacing online.

In the latest development, Xiaomi president Lin Bin posted an image on the Chinese microblogging platform Weibo which teases the upcoming Mi MIX 3 5G smartphone. On seeing the image closely, we can see the Android Pie logo in the top-left corner. In the top-right corner, there’s a 5G signal flag, suggesting that the phone is connected over a 5G network.

The development indicates that the Mi MIX 3 phone’s development is completed and is currently in the testing phase. If everything goes as per the plan, there’s a possibility that we could see the phone launching during CES 2019 in January or MWC 2019 in February.

Apart from Xiaomi, other manufacturers, including Samsung, OnePlus, and Huawei are working on a smartphone with 5G connectivity. OnePlus has also confirmed that it will be among the first to launch a 5G smartphone early next year.

The 5G variant of the Mi MIX 3 is expected to have the same specifications as the original model. The phone features a 6.39-inch AMOLED Full HD+ display with 19.5:9 aspect ratio and a 93.4 percent screen-to-body ratio.

Under the hood, it is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 octa-core processor. It packs up to 10GB of RAM and up to 256GB of internal storage. The Mi MIX 3 is equipped with two magnetic components underneath the display that enables the sliding mechanism. It can be customized for different functions such as accessing the dual selfie camera, answer phone calls, among others.

As for the camera, there’s a dual camera setup on the back featuring a 12-megapixel Sony IMX363 main sensor with f/1.8 aperture and another 12-megapixel Samsung S5k3M3+ secondary sensor with f/2.4 aperture. On the front side too there’s a dual camera setup — a 24-megapixel Sony IMX576 primary sensor and a 2-megapixel secondary sensor.

It is running on the latest MIUI 10 which is based Android 9 Pie operating system and also comes with the company’s Xiao AI voice assistant. The device is powered by a 3,200mAh battery that carries support for Quick Charge 4+ and 10W wireless charging.

Meanwhile, Xiaomi has scheduled a launch event in New York on 8th December. While it’s not yet known what the company is planning to unveil at the event, it is believed that Xiaomi could make an official entry in the US smartphone market with the launch of Mi MIX 3.

OPPO has recently introduced the OPPO A7 smartphone in various Asian markets. It was announced in India on Nov. 22, but the pricing and release date of the smartphone was not confirmed. Fresh information revealed by Mumbai-based retailer Mahesh Telecom the OPPO A7 will be releasing with a price tag of Rs. 16,990 (~$240). The handset is speculated to hit the market on Nov. 27.

The OPPO A7 is a rebranded version of the Realme 2 aimed towards the offline markets. The Realme 2 is exclusively available for purchase. The 32 GB storage + 3 GB RAM and 64 GB storage + 4 GB RAM variant of the Realme 2 smartphone are respectively priced at Rs. 9,499 (~$134) and Rs. 10,990 (~$156).

The official OPPO India site lists the OPPO A7 in variants such as 32 GB storage + 3 GB RAM and 32 GB storage + 4 GB RAM. Probably, the Rs. 16,990 (~$240) pricing leak could belong to the second variant of the smartphone.

Just a day after launching the Redmi Note 6 Pro smartphone in the Indian market, Xiaomi will now start selling the phone in the country from today.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro will be available for purchase in India from today 12:00 PM through online marketplace Flipkart as well as Mi.com as a part of Xiaomi‘s Mi Black Friday Sale.

As for the pricing, the base model with 4GB RAM is priced at Rs. 13,999 (approximately $199) while the 6GB RAM model is priced at Rs. 15,999, which roughly converts to $227. In India, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro comes in four color options — Black, Rose Gold, Blue, and Red.

Xiaomi’s 90 Points launches the solid Popular Leather Bag with a 599 yuan (~$86) price tag

Xiaomi’s ecological chain company 90 Points is well known for its line of sleek bags, luggage and even jackets. The company’s catalogue of products continues to increase with the addition of the 90 Points Popular Leather Bag which has been launched with a hefty 599 Yuan (~$86) price tag.

As the name implies, the 90 Points Popular leather backpack is made from leather. The main body is made of two layers of cowhide (bovine split layer) giving it a crisp shape and rich texture. The part close to the body of the owner is not made from the same leather material, thus enhancing the visual integrity.

The Popular Leather Bag comes with an 18L capacity and has a dimension of 35cmx16cmx40cm, weighing just 1.12kg. The design also includes several storage pockets which makes it a good product for those who’ve got several gadgets they move around with. The main compartment has an internal compartment that can contain a 15-inch Macbook. There is no word yet on the availability of the backpack but it adopts a 599 yuan ($86) price tag.

OPPO R17 Pro confirmed to launch in India on December 4

Recently, OPPO had hinted that it will be launching its first ever R-series smartphone in India. Today, the Chinese manufacturer has sent out media invites for OPPO R17 Pro launch event that will be held in Mumbai, India on Dec. 4. The R17 Pro was announced alongside R17 smartphone in China in August. However, India will be receiving only the R17 Pro model.

The OPPO R17 Pro houses a 6.4-inch waterdrop notch enabled AMOLED screen. It supports 19.5:9 aspect ratio and FHD+ resolution. The large-sized display of the phone offers a screen-to-body ratio of 91.5 percent. Its display is shielded by Gorilla Glass 6. OPPO has embedded a fingerprint reader under the screen of the smartphone.

The R17 Pro is powered by Snapdragon 710 chipset and 8 GB of RAM. The handset features an internal storage of 128 GB. The second SIM slot can be used for adding a microSD card.

The rear shell of the R17 Pro features a dual camera setup followed by a TOF stereo camera. The vertical dual camera module includes a 12-megapixel wide-angle lens and a 20-megapixel sensor with f/1.5 to f/2.5 variable aperture. A 25-megapixel selfie shooter is placed inside the notch of the phone. A 3,700mAh battery that carries support for 50W Super VOOC flash charging. It also includes support for NFC connectivity. The ColorOS 5.2 flavored Android 8.1 Oreo OS is preinstalled on the device.

The OPPO R17 Pro comes in colors like Stream Blue and Condensed Green. The pricing of the smartphone for the Indian market has not been confirmed. In China, the handset is available with a price tag of 4,299 Yuan (~$620, ~Rs. 43,800). The handset may carry a price similar to the OnePlus 6T phone. There is no information on the release date of the smartphone. However, its pre-orders are scheduled to begin on Dec. 1.

Coolpad sues Smartisan over unpaid orders

Just a few days ago, reports of Chinese phone manufacturer, Smartisan, facing financial crises surfaced on the web. While Smartisan’s CEO refuted the statement, a new development which might be proof the company is indeed struggling financially has come to light.

According to cnBeta, a China-based online publication, Smartisan has received a lawsuit from Coolpad over money owed. The lawsuit was filed by Dongguan Yulong Communication Technology Co. Ltd, a subsidiary of Coolpad against Beijing Hammer Digital Technology (Smartisan).

The plaintiff claims it signed a contract with Smartisan to supply mobile phone parts worth over 10 million Chinese Yuan. However, after delivery of the goods, Smartisan is still yet to pay the remaining half of the cost. So far, there has been no response from Smartisan.

If Smartisan is indeed owing its supplier(s), it isn’t out of place to believe the reports that the company is facing financial challenges. As we have seen in the case of similar companies that have exited the mobile business such as LeEco and Gionee, unpaid bills are one of the proofs a company isn’t doing well.

Xiaomi crowdfunds the Xiaojin Smart Foldable Treadmill priced at 1899 yuan (~$274)

The treadmill is one convenient gadget which aids fitness-conscious individuals to get their daily workout, regardless of rain or sunshine. Unfortunately, treadmills are usually large, heavy and not fit for every home. However, Xiaomi recently launched the WalkingPad mini portable treadmill and the product has received tremendous support even on Kickstarter. The Chinese giant has again given a headstart to another Chinese startup with a foldable treadmill. The product is dubbed Kingsmith Xiaojin Smart Foldable Treadmill.

This new treadmill is a bit bigger than the WalkingPad Mini but it equally comes with a compact size an design that looks very much like the regular treadmills. One problem users might encounter with the WalkingPAd Mini is the lack of a handlebar to act as support when the user is running out of steam or if he misses a step. The Xiaojin Smart Foldable Treadmill addresses that, and also provides a digital electronic panel for monitoring the speed and other settings of the treadmill.

The gadget comes with an elastic running board which provides real road running experience. The handle and display panel can be folded into a compact size that can be transported easily. Apart from the display panel, the gadget can also be paired with a smartphone and controlled using the MIJIA app.

The Xiaojin Smart Foldable Treadmill is presently available on crowdfunding for 1,899 Yuan ($273). This is even cheaper than what the WalkingPad Mini is sold for outside China by third-party retailers. The device is expected to start shipping on December 25.

SK Hynix Introduces World’s First DDR5 DRAM Module, Production to Begin in 2020

The current generation of DRAM, DDR4, also known as “double data rate fourth generation” has been around for quite long. The module started to make its way to computers way back in 2014. However, it is only now after four year’s that we’re seeing the very first glimpse of the next generation, i.e. DDR5. SK Hynix, a prominent DRAM manufacturer, has managed to call first dibs on the world’s first 16GB DDR5 memory chip. The chips are also the first DDR5 modules to be compliant with the JEDEC memory standard.

Speaking more about specifications, the new modules are prepared using Hynix’ 10nm fabrication. DDR5 is expected to give much faster transfer speeds, and evidently, the Hynix DDR5 chip can go up to 5200Mbps transfer speeds which is roughly 60 percent faster than DDR4’s 3200Mbps. Furthermore, it will do this consuming 30 percent less power than the previous version. SK Hynix has left out some details including the die size used for the new modules.

The company intends to shore up its DDR5 range with other capacity versions like the 8GB and 32GB. However, the important thing to note is that SK Hynix has only demoed the first chipset. Actual commercial production isn’t expected to start until 2020. It took quite a lot of time before DDR4 RAM modules actually started going mainstream after they were finalized and this is likely to be the case with DDR5 as well.

Apart from SK Hynix, Cadence and Micron have also been working on DDR5 RAM and expecting productions to begin by 2019.

The OnePlus 6T, which is the current flagship of OnePlus, was one of the earliest smartphones to come with Android 9.0 Pie. Even then, OnePlus has continued to keep polishing the software with follow-up updates. The handset is currently receiving OxygenOS 9.0.6 which, apart from usual bug fixes, includes camera optimization, face unlock improvements, and aims to offer a better UI experience.

Design

Huawei Honor 10 Lite is one of the most beautiful and attractive phones thanks to its futuristic and flagship-like design. It has a wonderful glass back available in gradient color variants, as well as a very high screen-to-body ratio thanks to a narrow chin and a waterdrop notch. Oppo Realme 2 Pro is beautiful too, but it is made of polycarbonate, unlike the Honor 10 Lite. Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro has a full metal body which is all but stunning at a first glance.

Display

All average IPS panels, they have nothing special and just an average viewing quality. So do not choose the best smartphone for you by basing on the display. We can just tell you that Honor 10 Lite and Oppo Realme 2 Pro have narrower bezels and smaller notches, so you may like them more.

Specs & Software

Oppo Realme 2 Pro is the phone which performs better thanks to its more powerful Snapdragon 660 chipset. It is a better SoC especially for gaming, and it is paired with up to 8 GB of RAM and up to 128 GB of internal storage on the Realme 2 Pro, while Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro and Honor 10 Lite offer max 6 GB of RAM. Honor 10 Lite is customized by the EMUI based on Android Pie, while Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro and Realme 2 Pro have MIUI and Color OS based on Android Oreo.

Camera

The dual rear cameras of these handsets are more or less at the same levels with bright apertures and a decent level of detail even when light conditions are not the best. The front camera of Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro makes the difference if you love selfies as it is paired with a secondary depth sensor. But overall, it is a draw.

Battery

Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro is much better than Realme 2 Pro and Honor 10 Lite when it comes to battery life because it has a much bigger lithium unit with a 4000 mAh capacity. Further, its Snapdragon 636 is a very efficient SoC and it is optimized in an excellent way.

Price

There is not a clear winner of this comparison and each of these devices is very close to each other. I would personally pick Oppo Realme 2 Pro due to its better performance, but if you want more battery life go for the Redmi Note 6 Pro, while if you are looking for the best design choose Honor 10 Lite. While Honor 10 Lite and Realme 2 Pro start from about €175/$200 in China, Redmi Note 6 Pro costs about €190/$216.

Samsung Galaxy M20 AnTuTu result reveals it will have an Infinity U display

After appearing on Geekbench, Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy M20 has been spotted on AnTuTu and the result reveals an important detail about its display.

AnTuTu is known for disclosing some specs of a benchmarked phone and the Galaxy M20 is no exception. The benchmark result revealed the phone has a 2340 x 1080 display. Is that display resolution familiar?

Yes, it is. That is the resolution of phones like the OPPO F9/F9 Pro, the Oneplus 6T, Realme 2 Pro and Vivo V11 to name a few. And what do these phones have in common save for their resolution? A water-drop notch or as Samsung will call it, an Infinity U display. This means the Galaxy M20 will most likely be one of the first Samsung phones with a notch and to rock the new Infinity display.

The benchmark result shows the Galaxy M20 (SM-M205F) is powered by an Exynos 7885 processor with a Mali-G71 MP2 GPU. It also has 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. There are reports it will also have a 64GB version (probably with 4GB of RAM).

Hands-on images confirm ASUS ZenFone Max Pro M2 has dual rear cameras

Yesterday, the official ASUS Indonesia Twitter account shared a tweet that revealed the ZenFone Max Pro M2 will launch on December 11. The tweet included an image that teased the upper part of the phone’s front and rear. The image confirmed the phone will come with a notch in its display and multiple cameras on the back.

It was erroneously reported that ASUS’s next mid-range phone will have three cameras on the back but images taken from an early review video have now confirmed that the ZenFone Max Pro M2 has dual rear cameras and not triple cameras. These images have shown that the teaser was misleading and rather than a third sensor, what comes next is an LED flash.

Apart from confirming the number of cameras, more details of the phone were also revealed in the video which has now been taken down.

The ASUS ZenFone Max Pro M2 is said to have a 6.0-inch FHD+ display with a 19:9 aspect ratio. Inside the notch are an LED flash, a proximity sensor, and a 13MP f/2.0 camera. The display is reported to be covered in Gorilla Glass 6. There is also glass on the back but there is no confirmation if it is also Gorilla Glass.

Xiaomi Mi 8 discounted heavily on Thanksgiving Day

The fourth Thursday of November is usually marked as Thanksgiving Day in the US and this year’s celebration fell on November 22. The Thanksgiving Day holiday isn’t celebrated in China but Xiaomi is trying to leverage on the publicity to sell its smartphones in China. The company is promoting the Mi 8 (8GB RAM + 128GB storage version) with a price cut of 400 yuan. Thus, the Mi 8 is now available for 2,899 yuan for the 8GB + 128GB version instead of 3299 yuan.

The new price cut may only be valid for only the Thanksgiving Day but we expect Xiaomi to effect further price cuts on this model as well as several others. The device is available on Xiaomi’s official Mi.com website. Apart from the 8GB +128GB version, all other memory variants also received price cuts ranging from 200 yuan to 400 yuan.

The Mi 8 was released in May this year bearing a mammoth 6.21-inch 2.5D Curved AMOLED screen, FHD+ display with 2248 x1080 pixels resolution for an unmatched viewing experience. It is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 Octa-core processor and it uses an Adreno 630 710MHz GPU, under the hood. The device comes with 6GB of RAM and a offers a hearty 128GB of onboard storage so that you can save your favorite content without worrying about running out of storage space. Moreover, it houses a 12MP+12MP dual camera module on the back and houses a 20MP front shooter for selfies. The Mi 8 equally runs on MIUI 10-based Android 8.1 Oreo OS and draws its juices from a 3400mAh battery.
