EMUiI8 was released a couple of months back and has been updated to EMUI 8.1, announced with the Huawei P20. As a matter of fact, the P20 will be the first model to run EMUI 8.1. The new update seems to have added this new feature called Huawei Share which allows users to share files across systems.Huawei EMUI 8.1

Huawei Share is a file sharing feature which effectively turns the smartphone into a file server as long as it is on the same computer LAN  or other mobile phones can access the files on the phone, whether Windows, MAC or Android, as long as they can support the SMB protocol. Server Message Block (SMB) operates as an application-layer network protocol mainly used for providing shared access to files, printers, and serial ports and miscellaneous communications between nodes on a network.EMUI 8.1

OnePlus 6 Will Be Waterproof, Teaser Suggests

More and more manufacturers are adding waterproofing on their major flagships in the past few years. However, this was also a major feature that was missing on OnePlus’ flagships, at least until now. But that’s going to change. OnePlus has just released a brand new teaser for its upcoming OnePlus 6 flagship and it kind of confirms that the new device will be waterproof.

This is definitely welcome news for fans who desperately wanted this feature. Samsung and Sony flagships have always been waterproof but it came at a price. Their top-end models cost upwards of $700, which doesn’t exactly make them affordable. On the other hand, the OnePlus 6 is expected to retain the affordable price tag, which gives customers a solid choice for a waterproof / water resistant flagship without having to shell out a lot of money.

Unfortunately, the teaser doesn’t say anything about the IP rating of the handset. So, we don’t know whether it will be IP57 like the P20, or IP67 like the P20 Pro or even IP68 like the Galaxy S9. Irrespective of the rating of the new flagship, it does offer a sense of relief to buyers who don’t want to worry about accidental splashes ruining their $500+ smartphone.

Earlier this month, Oppo launched its latest smartphone in the Indian market — Oppo F7. Now, the China-based company has announced a new variant of the phone — Oppo F7 Diamond Black Special Edition.

This new special edition smartphone comes with bumped up RAM and storage capacity. The Diamond Black edition was announced during the Oppo F7 launch event but the company had not revealed availability information at that time. Oppo had also announced Solar Red variant, which is yet to go on sale.

The Oppo F7 Diamond Black Special Edition priced at Rs. 26,990 (approximately $412) and will go on sale in India from 21st April through online retailers Flipkart, Amazon India and Paytm Mall as well as the company’s official stores across India. To compare, the standard variant is priced at Rs. 21,990 (approx. $336).

Oppo F7 Diamond Black Special Edition

The Oppo F7 Diamond Black Special Edition comes with a diamond-like finish on the back side, which sets it apart from the standard edition. The phone comes with a 6.2-inch Full-HD+ Full Screen 2.0 display with screen resolution of 2280 x 1080 pixels and 19:9 aspect ratio. This is the first smartphone from Oppo to feature a notched display.

Under the hood, the smartphone is powered by MediaTek Helio P60 64-bit octa-core processor clocked at 2GHz, along with 6GB RAM and 128GB internal storage. It’s noteworthy that the standard edition of Oppo F7 comes with 4GB RAM and 64GB onboard storage.

Connectivity options on the device include 4G VoLTE, Bluetooth 4.2, microUSB port, and 3.5mm headphone jack. The phone runs on Android 8.1 Oreo operating system based ColorOS 5.0. The device drives power from a 3,400mAh battery.

Samsung Patents A Notch Display Design, May Debut on the Galaxy S10

Smartphone manufacturers are gradually going ballistic with the adoption of the notch display design that was first seen on the Sharp Aquos lineup. The Essential Phone 1 also utilised the notch design which involves making a cut-out at the top of the display. More recent is the iPhone X and since Apple utilised this design on its flagship, the design seems to have gone viral. The roll call now includes the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2s, Huawei P20, OPPO R15 and the upcoming OnePlus 6. Leading phone maker Samsung may join the fray soon, that is if the latest design patented by the company is anything to go by.

Samsung has filed a patent for a design which may likely be used on the Galaxy S10. The design shows the top bezel cut-out that houses the front camera and sensors. That isn’t all Samsung patented. There is a second patent for a design which is completely bezel-less with barely a frame around the display.Samsung bezel-less display patent

The smartphone design patent with a bezel-less screen comes with a single rear camera and no rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. It, therefore, implies that the device may likely pack an under-display fingerprint sensor. The design doesn’t also include a front camera and we believe Samsung will find a place to tuck in the front camera and other sensors that would be at the front.

Flipkart, the Indian eCommerce marketplace, is teasing new announcements on 17th April that the company says will “disrupt the mobile phone landscape.”

The company is gearing up to launch a new phone on its platform as well as a ‘big’ brand exclusively on its marketplace. Further, the company will also be unveiling a new value-added service for the phone.

Rumors suggest that the announcement could be related to the upcoming Huawei P20 series launch in India, which Huawei has been teasing. However, it seems unlikely given that the P20 is a high-end smartphone series and with Flipkart teasing to disrupt the market, the phone is likely to be a mid-range device.

Flipkart Big Announcement Tease

Another possibility is the next-generation Moto G-series smartphones from Lenovo-owned Motorola. The company is expected to launch Moto G6 lineup as well as Moto E5 lineup pretty soon. Motorola has scheduled a launch event on 19th April in Brazil, where it is expected to launch the Moto G6 series smartphones.

Flipkart’s philosophy of customer centricity and long-term partnerships has transformed the way India buys mobile phones. We are proud to enter into an exclusive partnership with a tech giant to disrupt the mobile phone landscape in a big way. Get ready for 2 big announcements soon.”

The value-added service teased by the Indian eCommerce company on its ‘BigAnnouncement’ landing page seems to an insurance coverage as Flipkart is promising that prospective customer of the upcoming phone will get extensive insurance coverage so that they can live with less worry about protecting the device from any physical damage.

Xiaomi Wireless Charger Unboxing & Teardown – What Lies Inside?

During the launch of the Mi Mix 2s on March 27, Xiaomi also unveiled a new Mi wireless charging pad which works for the Mi Mix 2s and other phones like the Galaxy S series and iPhones supporting wireless charging. For the avoidance of doubt, the Mi Mix 2s is the first Xiaomi model to feature support for wireless charging.Xiaomi Wireless Charger

The Mi Wireless charging pad utilises the popular Qi wireless charging standard. It uses the normal 5W rating and a 7.5W fast charge rating and has a 5V 2A and 9V 2A rating. The wireless charger also comes with protection from extreme temperatures and high current as well as foreign body detection.

The Xiaomi Wireless charger is only indicated for use on the Mi Mix 2s, according to the product details on the body of the packaging box. The retail box only houses the wireless charger and a quick starter guide. There is no data cable or an adapter inside

Design wise, the wireless charging dock comes with a white coloured body devoid of any text. The shell is made of plastic while the upper surface is covered with a  layer of thick silica gel through a process similar to secondary injection moulding. As a result of the silica gel, the surface is soft to touch with the hand. It also gives it an anti-slip feature both at the top and bottom but the bottom one uses a rubber pad to create an anti-slip feature. The charging pad is potable with a radius of 47mm and thickness of 12.44mm. It uses a USB-C input interface and supports 5V2A / 9V2A input. There is also a green indicator light at the side of the wireless charger. The light stays on during normal charging while it flashes when the device is in protection mode.Xiaomi Wireless Charger

Coming to the teardown, the wireless charging pad is held together by four screws. The screws are hidden under the for rubber pad at the base. Opening up the device reveals a very simple build. The top aspect could be seen with a plastic outer body and the silicon gel surface in the middle moulded with the plastic. The bottom surface is entirely composed of plastic material. All the parts are mounted at the bottom of the cover. Xiaomi Wireless Charger

The internal components consist of a PCB board and a metal heat conducting block underneath. The conducting block spreads the heat and distributes it to avoid accumulation of too much heat. The internal is translucent and this is achieved using a black light-proof adhesive sheet underneath to prevent light leakage. The USB type-C female port is firmly welded at four different points to the PCB. The metal heat sink is fixed by clips to the PCB  and has screw points which hold it to the plastic casing.

The charging coil is located at the middle, just above the PCB and it is soldered to the borad at two points. There is also a temperature sensor which detects high temperature and the charging pad goes into protective mode. The temperature probe is placed in the middle of the coil to measure the temperature. The coils have a high saturation degree of solder joints, flat side-mount chip LEDs, and the temperature sensor pad is glued to avoid vibrations.Xiaomi Wireless Charger

In all, the Xiaomi Wireless Charger has a minimalist and simple design and for a device that measures up to Apple’s wireless charger 7.5W fast charging output, the device is nicely priced at 99 Yuan ($15). We feel it is worth buying since its usage is broad and not limited to the Mi Mix 2s.

Nubia Red Magic Gaming Phone Invites Come In The Form Of Supply Crates

Gaming phones are the new trend in the market and the Chinese are making sure that they are on top of this trend. After the launch of the Xiaomi backed Black Shark gaming smartphone, another Chinese company, Nubia, is all set to unveil its own gaming smartphone — the Nubia Red Magic Phone. The launch is on April 19 and the company has started sending out invites to the media. What’s interesting about these invites is how they look.

Nubia Red Magic Invite

The Nubia Red Magic Gaming phone invite comes in the form of a supply crate from the popular game Rules of Survival: Battle Royale. If you haven’t played this game before, then know that during gameplay, multiple supply crates drop in from the sky that helps users gather ammo and other gadgets in order to increase their chances of survival. The supply crates in the game look like the invite above.

Once you open the invite, you’d find a scroll with the code: 0008,4767,7621,0008,2052,3172. Chinese media has already decoded it and it says, “No Red Magic Survive”. Don’t go by its literal meaning as it kind of means ‘Be the Best’. So, this is a way to keep the media interested in the April 19 event.

nubia red devil

The company has already started teasing the phone and we have also got a first glimpse of the handset thanks to a image shared by one of its executives. Expect powerful hardware, next-gen cooling technology, and features that ensure high frame rate during gameplay on the new Red Magic Phone.
