The holidays are over but the deals are not. Motorola is running a limited time discount on three (or four) of its phones. If you are on the search for a new phone to begin the year, you should check out these Moto Z2 Play, Moto G5 Plus and Moto X4 deals.
Starting with the Z2 Play, Motorola has slashed $100 off the price of the 64GB model bringing the price down to $399.99 from $499.99. The price cut applies to both the gold and gray variants.
The Moto G5 Plus has also gotten a price cut but on both storage variants unlike the Z2 Play. The 32GB variant is down by $20 while the 64GB edition gets $40 off bringing them to $209.99 and $259.99 respectively.
The Moto X4 is the other phone getting a deal. However, the deal varies depending on if you are purchasing the regular version or the Android One model.
The regular Moto X4 is $50 off and will sell for $349. The Android One version which doesn’t have Alexa installed gets $75 off and that brings the price down to $324.
The deals for the Moto Z2 Play and regular Moto X4 will end January 20 while the deal for the Moto G5 Plus ends January 13 and the Android One Moto X4 ends on January 15.
As expected, Sony has today announced three new entry-level and mid-range devices at CES 2018 in Las Vegas. The devices include Xperia XA2, XA2 Ultra and L2.
While the design of the phone appears similar to its predecessor, there are many welcome changes. The rear camera module, which used to take the top-left corner space, has now been moved to the centre-top. The fingerprint sensor has also found a place on the back panel.
For the XA2 series, the company has ditched MediaTek processor and has instead opted for Qualcomm‘s Snapdragon 630 chipset. While the Xperia XA2 features a 5.2-inch Full HD display, its bigger sibling XA2 Ultra comes with a 6-inch Full HD display.
The Xperia XA2 packs 3GB RAM and 32GB of internal storage, along with a microSD card slot for further expanding the storage capacity. On the other hand, the Xperia XA2 Ultra comes with 4GB RAM and two variants based on the internal storage — 32GB and 64GB. This one too comes with a microSD card slot for storage expansion.
Sony has always focused on the camera performance for the Xperia series and the XA2 and XA2 Ultra are no exception. Both devices feature a 23-megapixel camera sensor with f/2.0 aperture, hybrid autofocus and support for 4K video recording and 120fps slow-motion shooting.
On the front, the Xperia XA2 comes with an 8-megapixel ultra wide fixed-focus camera for taking selfies and video calling. The Xperia XA2 Ultra features a dual-camera setup on the front with an 8-megapixel camera sensor and a 16-megapixel camera sensor with less extreme FOV, 16:9 aspect ratio, autofocus, and optical image stabilisation (OIS).
Both devices are running Android 8.0 Oreo operating system out-of-the-box. While the XA2 is powered by a 3,300mAh battery, the XA2 Ultra is fuelled by a 3,580mAh battery. Both phones support Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 3.0 fast charging technology.
Along with the XA2-series, the company also announced a new entry-level phone — Sony Xperia L2. It features a 5.5-inch HD display with 1280 x 720 pixels screen resolution. It is powered by a 1.5GHz quad-core MediaTek MT6737T processor, coupled with 3GB RAM and 32GB internal storage with support for expanding storage using microSD card.
There is a 13-megapixel rear camera and an 8-megapixel front-facing camera. The phone features a fingerprint sensor on the back, same as XA2-series. It runs Android 7.1 Nougat operating system and is fuelled by a 3,300mAh battery.
The Sony Xperia XA2 and XA2 Ultra will be available from February 2018 while the Sony Xperia L2 will be available for purchase in late January. However, the company has not yet revealed pricing information.

Each of these SoCs have octa-core architecture and has a dedicated chip for artificial intelligence and deep learning. The first difference that is possible to notice is the clock frequency. Exynos 8910 has the highest max frequency, but Snapdragon 845 has a max frequency of 2.8 GHz for each of its cores, while Exynos 9810 has a 2.9 GHz frequency only for 4 cores. Kirin 970 has the lowest frequency with 2.4 GHz. Each SoC has a modem that can reach a download speed of 1.2 Gbps, but Exynos 9810 has the highest upload speed with 200 Mbps.
On the other hand, the Snapdragon 845 has a GPU that’s likely better: the Adreno 630. Further, Snapdragon 845 will probably provide more modding options. If I had to pick one, I would personally choose the Snapdragon 845 by Qualcomm, but that is mostly for personal tasks, as Samsung Exynos 9810 is as excellent as its opponent. I define Kirin 970 slightly inferior to both its opponents, but note that Huawei devices with this processor are more affordable.
Exynos 9810 vs Snapdragon 845 vs Kirin 970: Summary
DJI has announced a successor to its Osmo smartphone stabilizer. Called the Osmo Mobile 2, the new stabilizer brings a couple of new features at a much cheaper price.
Hand-held stabilizers are not new. They are pretty useful for shooting shake-free videos and come in handy for both amateurs and professionals.
One of the main upgrades in the DJI Osmo Mobile 2 is the ability to allow you mount your phone in portrait mode. To shoot in portrait in the original model, you had to hold the stabilizer in a horizontal position.
The Osmo Mobile 2 also comes with an in-built 2600mAh battery (18650 LiPo) that should last up to 15 hours on a single charge. That is a significant upgrade to the original which uses replaceable 1225mAh batteries that last about 4.5 hours.
The new version also charges faster in just 2 hours via micro USB and can in turn charge your phone via a USB port at the back (5V/1.5A). It is also lighter at 485g, thanks to the switch to “high performance nylon” from the nylon and magnesium alloy of the original.
To sum it up, the Osmo Mobile 2 will sell for just $129 when it goes on sale. Compare that to the original’s $299 launch price, though you can now purchase it for $199.
Earlier, we reported that Meizu is gearing up to launch Meizu Pro 7 phone in the Indian market. Now it seems that the company is finally ready to bring it to the Indian shores.
According to the report, Meizu Pro 7 will be launched in India later this month. However, there is no exact timeline available for the launch. The report further suggests that the device will be priced under Rs. 30,000 (approximately $473) in India.
In November last year, the company teased the launch of a “Pro” smartphone, without revealing the phone’s name. The image posted by the company on the social media website stated, “it’s time for you to become a Pro! Stay Tuned! #BeAPro.”
The Meizu Pro 7 was originally launched in China in June last year, along with Meizu Pro 7 Plus. However, the Pro 7 Plus will not be launched this year, according to the report. The Pro 7 features a unique secondary AMOLED display at the back which shows time, notifications, weather, and also serves as a selfie screen for taking portraits from the rear camera.
The device features a 5.2-inch Full HD Super AMOLED primary display with 1920 x 1080 pixels screen resolution. There is also a 1.9-inch Super AMOLED secondary display with screen resolution of 240 × 536 pixels and 307ppi pixel density.
Under the hood, the Meizu Pro 7 is powered by 2.5GHz MediaTek Helio P25 octa-core processor along with Mali-T880 GPU, 4GB RAM, and 64GB internal storage. The other variant of the phone comes powered by 2.6GHz MediaTek Helio X30 deca-core 10nm processor with PowerVR 7XTP-MP4 GPU, 4GB RAM and 128GB internal storage.
There is a dual camera setup at the back, featuring two 12-megapixel sensors with one being a monochrome lens and other being RGB lens, along with f/2.0 aperture, phase detection autofocus, and LED flash support. On the front, there’s a 16-megapixel camera sensor with f/2.0 aperture.
The fingerprint sensor is embedded in the phone’s home button and the device comes with USB Type-C port. Other connectivity options on the device include 4G VoLTE, WiFi 802.11 b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.2, and GPS. The device is fueled by a 3,000mAh battery that comes with a support for mCharge fast charging.
Xiaomi‘s 2016 Mi Mix is credited to have spurred a shift to 18:9 full-screen smartphones and it wasn’t much of a surprise when the company released the Mi Mix 2 in continuation of the full-screen trend. The Mix 2 features much more reduced bezels than the Mi Mix and retains the 18:9 aspect ratio.
The Mi Mix 2 starts at 3299 Yuan (∼$506) for the base model with 6GB RAM + 64GB storage. While the higher 8GB RAM +128GB storage variant goes for 4,699 Yuan ($724). Just four months after its launch, the Mi Mix 2 variants have had their prices slashed by 300 Yuan ($46) on Taobao (Tmall) in China. This 300 Yuan discount sees the prices going down to 2999 Yuan ($462) for the 6GB RAM variant and 4,399 Yuan (~$677) for the 8GB RAM variant. We don’t know the reason for the price slash but it looks like a temporary offer that could elapse soon. Nevertheless, the price slash is suggestive that the device may soon see its price getting more competitive on all major sales channel as the day goes by. Quite curiously, you could get it for even less outside China as GearBest recently offered the 6GB Mi Mix for $439.99 with coupon. But ordinarily, it is listed for $462, at par with the Tmall price. Who’s waiting along with me until the base variant is priced at $350-$400 before picking up a unit? That might happen sooner than we expected.
As a reminder, the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 features a 5.99-inch FHD+ display with a resolution of 2160 x 1080. It is powered by a Snapdragon 835 chip with an Adreno 540 GPU. The processor is backed by a 6GB RAM on some models while there are three storage versions; 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB. There is also an 8GB RAM + 128GB Special Edition. The Mi MIX 2 packs a single 12MP Sony IM386 sensor at the rear as well as a 5MP selfie camera. There is a 4,400mAH battery under the hood with QC 3.0 and a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. There is also dual WiFi band support and it supports 43 bands, 22 of which are LTE bands, including band 20. The Mi MIX 2 runs on MIUI 9 based on Android Nougat, is available in black only except for the Special Ceramic edition.
Update: Here is a coupon code for Xiaomi Mi Mix 2: 1BGMix264, $35 off, here is the buy link: Banggood

Google could not find success when it attempted to commercialize Google Glass in 2012 because of its costly price tag and complicated distribution procedure. Companies who are looking to launched AR enabled smartglasses have learnt from the failure of Google Glass which indicates that we may soon see a new market for it in future.
Apple is expected to debut its smartglasses in 2020. Analysts are of the view its popularity could be higher than the iPhone. Travers is of the view that Amazon may release its own Alexa and AR enabled smartglasses in the near future.
Since last year, Amazon has been making its Alexa assistant available on non-Amazon devices. By making its personal assistant available on numerous third-party devices will allow the retailer giant to generate good revenue since it can drive users to make purchases on Amazon.

Samsung has announced a surprise package for CES 2018, its first actually because we believe more are on the way. The product is a 146-inch Modular TV which utilizes microLED technology to produce its pictures. The smartTV dubbed The Wall brings to mind the innovative canvas-like smartTV called The Frame which the tech giant launched last year. The microLED technology which the TV uses to produce its pictures is based on Samsung’s Cinema Screen technology, designed for movie theaters. This isn’t Samsung’s largest TV panel as the tech giant launched a bigger 170-inch smart TV at CES 2016.
As stated, The Wall comes in a 146-inch size (diagonal) and this is the house size version but it can get even bigger as it uses a modular design. Samsung hinted that users can add or remove modules to make their TV bigger or smaller in any configuration, thus removing previous limitations on screen size. The tech giant was quick to note that the increase in size comes with zero impact on the performance of the display.
The Wall MicroLED TV uses an array of millions of individual tine LEDs to create images, quite different from the traditional LED-based LCD TVs which use a liquid crystal layer and an LED backlight. This technology bears similarity to the one used in scoreboards and jumbo screens, but it is scaled for home use.
Samsung introduces a 146-inch modular, MicroLED based TV it calls The Wall. Now we're left to guess what's Beyond The Wall. pic.twitter.com/SrwFFPjNke
The MicroLED technology at play on the monstrous-sized TV also has the potential for infinite contrast just like OLED TVs because each LED can turn on and off individually. The smartTV can also achieve a massive 2000 nits brightness, arguably higher than any LED LCD we’ve seen. Samsung is yet to disclose the TV’s resolution but it can achieve DVI-P3 color. There is no word yet on the pricing or availability but Samsung revealed that the MicroLED TV will ship this year.

Microsoft is yet to release an official statement on whether it will be launching its own smartphone in the near future. However, recent patent filings for smartphone/tablet hybrid from the company have suggested that the company may introduce the highly anticipated Surface Phone soon. It appears that the company is really working on a Surface Phone as an engineer from Microsoft China has accidentally confirmed its existence.
On a Chinese Q&A site, a user had complained on the poor integration of the Cortana assistant on Android. An engineer with a Microsoft owned account replied on it by saying that the reason behind it is the lack of permissions available on Android platform.
Well, the only place it can currently work fine is on Microsoft’s Windows 10 OS. The engineer went on to say that the Cortana would be working perfectly on the Surface Phone. However, he was quick enough to edit his answer to add that he is not sure whether the Surface Phone exists.
Rumors have it that the Surface Phone could be codenamed as Andromeda. It may feature a large display that will allow users to use it as a tablet. The folding mechanism on it may also make it possible to use it like a smartphone. Some reports claim that company may debut the Surface Phone later this year.
Do you think that Microsoft will re-enter smartphone business with a better product to take on the likes of Apple, Samsung and Google? Share us your views by adding your comments below.
Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is about to kick-off and we are expecting some major announcements in terms of new technology. In line with that, Vivo has officially announced that it will be showcasing a phone with a new fingerprint sensor technology at the event on 10th January.
Going by the teaser image released by the China-based smartphone manufacturer, it is clear that the company is planning to showcase a phone with under display fingerprint sensor technology.
With full-screen displays going mainstream, the demand for the fingerprint sensors embedded under display has intensified. For devices will full-screen display, the under display fingerprint sensor is believed to be the most convenient way to unlock devices, instead of a standalone sensor placed on the back side of the phone, or embedded on the home button.
Recently, Synaptics launched Clear ID FS9500 optical in-display fingerprint scanner for smartphones, marking a milestone in fingerprint sensor technology. Xiaomi has announced a new version of its crowdfunded product, the Soocare X3(Soocas) electric toothbrush which was first launched in July 2016. The new edition is a lite version of the original model and as would be expected, it comes with a slightly reduced 169 Yuan (~$26) price tag. he major difference between both versions lies in the slightly smaller battery capacity this new model packs.
The Xiaomi Soocas X3 Sonic Electric ToothBrush Lite Edition is also manufactured by Chinese innovative startup Soocare Cassels founded in 2015 and is tipped to take on Philip’s Sonicare line up of electric toothbrush with its quality products. The new Youth edition adopts a similar design as the first-generation model, utilizing a simplistic design. The handheld device uses a magnetic levitation acoustic wave motor with a swing speed of up to 37200 times per minute which spins the bristle. The gadget motor also has a torque output of 230 gf.cm which makes it continue swinging strong. The cleaning efficiency is at least 180 times that of the manual toothbrush which can only achieve a swing speed of around 100-200 times per minute.
Furthermore, the bristle of the toothbrush is said to be made by US company DuPont and is a 0.152mm thin soft bristle which has a 3D design that fits well into the teeth surfaces and interproximal spaces. The Youth version of the Soocare Electric toothbrush also features a body and chassis that is IPX7 waterproof certified and can be washed and cleaned after use directly under running water without fear of damage.
The Xiaomi Soocas X3 Sonic Electric ToothBrush Lite Edition also comes with Bluetooth connectivity which will able it to connect to your smartphone via the Soocare X3 app. The app displays the battery power percentage and other parameters. The device packs a slightly smaller 800mAh battery when compared to the 1000mAh battery which the first-gen Soocare toothbrush has and herein lies the major difference between both models. The 800mAh battery can last up to 18 days of use, lower than the 25 days the standard edition can last. It also comes with USB charging support and can be charged using a power bank.
No word yet on the availability but we expect it to go on sale soon in China. Since the first standard edition is available on several online retailers, this product will definitely find its way onto their platforms soon.
