Xiaomi have once again surprised everybody by announcing their foray into the tablet market with the release of the Mi Pad. An impressive device which seems to be able to compete directly with the iPad, rather than just emulate it. The specs are exciting in themselves, with the inclusion of the NVIDIA Tegra K1 quad-core 2.2GHz processor, a Kepler GPU with 192 CUDA cores, 2GB of RAM and a 7.9 inch 2048 x 1536 resolution display. There are two versions available, one with 16 GB internal memory and one with 32GB, and this space is expandable to up to 128GB with MicroSD card support. The battery is a Li-Po 6700mAh battery with 11 hours of multimedia usage supported. The operating system is the Android 4.4.2 Kitkat. The rear camera is 8MP and the front-facing sensor is 5MP. The tablet itself measures 202 x 135.4 x 8.5mm and weighs 360g. There are numerous colours available; green, blue, pink, yellow, white and grey.
So how much does all this hardware, wrapped up in a beautifully designed shell cost? Surprisingly little if the expectations are to be believed, just $138USD for the 16GB version and around $170USD for the 64GB. All this is going to happen on July 1st in China, and it remains to be seen whether the Mi Pad is to feature in Xiaomi’s expansion to overseas markets any time soon. With the Mi Pad’s excellent design and specifications, it would surely be well-received wherever it is made available.
LG has announced the new smarthwatch products at Google I/O conference that held at San Francisco. LG G Watch smartwatch was becoming the hot rumors and now LG has officially announced this stuff at Google I/O.
Xiaomi’s founder Lei Jun is certainly making a name for himself as China’s answer to Apple’s Steve Jobs. Xiaomi’s products are widely held to be good value, built well and of excellent design. Also impressive is the company’s attitude to customer feedback, with the crowdsourcing of ideas which provide the basis for the design features they offer. The customer feedback is highly valued and when used to give the customers what they want they also make them feel like an important part of the process.
Once a new handset is announced, customers express their intent to buy on social media, giving the company an excellent idea of how many handsets they need to produce but also makes sales extremely fast. When the MI 3 was launched Xiaomi used this sales format to sell 100,000 handsets in just 83 seconds. Pretty impressive stuff.
At Google’s I/O conference, they launched many different products. Among them was an interesting thing called the Android L.
Every time a new version of the Android was launched, Google would talk about its camera specs, processors, etc. In short, they usually put an emphasis on its features. This time, Google talked about its design.
What did this shift in emphasis from features to design mean?
I. It’s not as easy to bring new changes in performance and features
Man’s relationship with cell phones go all the way back to the 90s during the time of black and white phones, but it was not until the release of the iPhone’s iOS, with its touch screen supported functions as well as sensory devices, that this relationship truly changed.
Later, when the Android platform appeared, attempting to copy and improve on the iOS’ strengths such as the desktop.
Over the years, with its many versions, the Android has tried to catch up to the iOS.
Google has added all kinds of personalized features in the Android. Every cell phone manufacturer has scrambled for ideas on how to improve user experience.
Over the last several years, all kinds of excellent third-party apps have been incorporated into the newest Android incarnation. Innovation is no longer difficult, but to actually create new practical features, and not just gimmicky ones, has become very hard. At the same time, the iOS has also studied the Android’s strengths and has also copied the most useful ones. As a result, both the iOS and Android are becoming more and more similar.
It’s no longer possible to be creative with making new apps and features.
II. In the era of homogenization, design is the best competitive strength
Apps and all other kinds of cell phone feature are being gradually homogenized. Third-party softwares are getting homogenized as well. The only way to improve user experience is by focusing on the device’s design.
Google’s designs have not been the best, especially the 4.x. Whether it’s the menu bar or icons, the design of Google’s interface cannot compare with the iOS’. This time, they finally dropped the design style used by engineers and have worked painstakingly to design the public version. Improvements have been made on the color scheme, font, and animated transition. These improvements should provide a much better user experience.
III. Challenge on design
For cell phone manufacturers and app developers, new designs mean that they would have to choose the right components all over again.
Cell phone companies will have to look at how to combine their style in designing their own UIs and Apps with Google’s new style. Because of the “flattening” of the iOS, it takes a longer time to develop new Apps. It will only be worse with the path the Android is taking in the way it’s designed.
On the early morning on June 26 (Beijing time), Google will hold its annual I/O conference in the United States where they may launch the long-anticipated Nexus Tablet, new portable devices, and even the devices in the rumored Silver line which is supposed to replace the Nexus. However, what the users are mostly interested in is the Android 5.0.
It’s been three years since Google first released the Android 4.0 in 2011. Even though there have been several updates since then (4.0 to 4.4), there have not been any revolutionary changes in this platform, so many have high hopes for the Android 5.0. Here are several expectations we have about the 5.0.
“Flattening” and new UI
Ever since Microsoft used the Metro interface for the Windows Phone and Windows 8, flattening has become the biggest trend in the industry right now. Apple’s iOS7, 8, and even the Mac’s Yosemite interface joined in. Several Android phone manufacturers have also begun to “flatten” their own systems. We can confidently say that they will apply this to the Android 5.0 as well.
It’s also important to consider that Google usually follows new designs for the Android’s UI when they do massive upgrades. As a result, some massive changes may be made for the Android 5.0’s UI. These changes could be done to “flatten” the 5.0. They could also be just to improve user experience.
64-bit
The use of 64-bit processors is one of the most important selling points for the iPhone 5S. Even though it has received nothing but mockery from the industry, many consumers are still satisfied with it. Soon, Qualcomm, MediaTek, and other companies also released 64-bit processors which many refuse to admit that they want. The problem is that right now, the Android system’s support for 64-bit CPUs is not that great. If you want bring out the potential of these new CPUs, then, you need to upgrade the operating system. The Android 5.0 offers a very good opportunity.
ART
ART mode is one of the new features added by Google to the Android 4.4. It can effectively improve the performance of the operating system and solves Android’s lack of fluidity problems. Considering compatibility issues and other problems, many manufacturers chose to forgo it when upgrading. To solve this problem, Google may unofficially allow the use of ART for the Android 5.0 and we might say goodbye to the Dalvik virtual machine.
A better App store
Due to several reasons Google’s official app store, Google Play, has not been that popular in China, but this does not diminish its relevance as Google’s official online store. Compared to its competitors, the Google Play is not that complete yet and still lacks many important features. An App store is an important part of an operating system’s ecosystem, so it’s important to improve it and fix its problems. We can probably expect a better App store from the Android 5.0.
Better virtual keys
More and more Android devices are starting to abandon real-life keys and are turning to virtual ones, but right now, the Android system’s virtual keys still offer a very terrible user experience. There are times when you may not find it when you need it, and other times when you want to close it from the screen but cannot. When other manufacturers produce virtual keys, the attitude they profess is completely different from the strategy they come up with. Google will have to be consistent in their attitude and actions.
Improvements on their tablets
Tablets are a very important part of Mobile devices, but Android’s tablets have yet to receive much attention. Google stopped follow this concept after problems of fragmentation with the Android 3.0 which was especially designed for tablets. As a result, today, Google still applies phone designs for Tablet interfaces and this has resulted in poor user experience. If Google wants to provide superior operating systems for tablets, then they should add tablet-related improvements to the 5.0.
These are our expectations for the Android 5.0. If they come true, then users should be very pleased with the new Android. As a very liberated and creative enterprise, Google may deliver a big surprise for us. Nevertheless, we can only find out two days from now.

July 1st sees the release of Xiaomi’s Mipad, which is the company’s attempt to break into the tablet industry. It is powered by an NVIDIA Tegra K1 processor and has a display of 2048 x 1536. As regards the OS, it is running a custom app known as MIUI on top of Android. It is rumoured that the Mipad is to be one of the first to contain the NVIDIA quad-core ARM Cortex-A15 processor, boasting 192-core graphics. Other than this impressive addition, there is 2GB RAM, 16 GB of internal memory, 8MP rear camera, 5MP front-facing shooter, 802.11ac WiFi connectivity, Bluetooth 4.0, stereo speakers and a 6700mAh battery.
So is this a good effort? Well when you consider that the price is only $240, the Mipad is excellent value for a reasonably well-equipped piece of kit so should prove popular even in such a competitive market. It is as yet uncertain if the Mipad is set for release outside of China however
There are plans to roll out the Xiaomi Redmi Note across Honk Kong, Malaysia and Singapore over the next month. The Note version is larger than the Redmi, has twice the RAM (2GB) and double the onboard storage (8GB). The Note has an octa-core Mediatek MT6592 1.7GHz processor, a 5.5 inch display 1280 x 720 resolution, 13MP rear camera, 5MP front shooter and dual SIM capacity. It is is powered by Android 4.4.2 but has Xiaomi’s MIUI feature over the top. All this in sleek and shiny white plastic will be available in Honk Kong on June 27th for HKD $1239, in Singapore availability is from July 8th and costing S$199 and then in Malaysia from July 22nd for RM509. These prices amount to approximately USD$157.
Also, Xiaomi will be launching the Redmi 1S on July 8th in Malaysia for RM409. This is the sequel to the Redmi, having similar specs but 8GB or onboard storage and a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor.
Xiaomi will also launch the sequel of the Redmi, the Redmi 1S, on July 8 for RM409 ($126) in Malaysia. The phone has similar specs to the Redmi, including a 4.7-inch display with a 1,280×720-pixel resolution, but runs off a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor and has 8GB of onboard storage. It will be interesting to see how well these quality affordable devices fare overseas.

Google has presented a preview of the next generation Android software at its I/O developer conference. It has been described by Google’s Engineering Director Dave Burke as “the biggest release in the history of Android”. The interface has been given a new look, with the result being something Google are referring to as Material Design. The interface has been designed to give the impression of depth as well as colour and has been designed to work across all devices, not just Chrome and Android, giving users a smooth transition between products and a complete experience.
The use of “nest scrolling”, which sees items shrink and disappear, and the use of light and shadows are what helps to create the impression of depth and the digital material is said to expand and reform according to your instincts about how to move items and what items can be moved. There are a lot of new features to look forward to also:
Notifications will now be accessible from the lockscreen, and the notifications themselves will be organised according to what the user is most likely to want to see.
The authentication process is now more intelligent; the software will first attempt to find out if you’re in a known environment or if you are holding it from nearby devices or the smartwatch on your wrist. If your device isn’t persuaded by your surroundings, it will ask you for a PIN.
The keyboard UI interface has been overhauled and a “do not disturb” feature has been added.
The performance is being enhanced also, by the Android Extension Pack providing better graphics and there are new battery saving measures, which provide extensive statistics about battery use and a power-saving mode.
It all sounds very exciting, let’s hope the practice can meet the expectations.
Introduction: When the HTC M8 first hit stores, it received rave reviews, but because of its high price, HTC decided to release the M8Sw. This new phone is covered with a plastic case and replaced the M8’s UltraPixel camera with a 13mp camera. Its CPU was upgraded to the Snapdragon 801 and its price in China Unicom’s official online store (10010.com) as 2999 RMB. We recently managed to get our hands on the M8Sw’s China Unicom version and today, we’ll try it out.

The designs of the M8Sw’s receiver and speakers are completely different from the original’s.
The M8Sw is made of plastic while the original is made of metal. The former is listed as costing 2999 RMB in China Unicom’s website while the M8 costs up to 5299 RMB (851.21 USD

Both use the HTC sense 6.0 which is modeled after the Android 4.4.
The HTC M8Sw, with its Snapdragon 801, got 36000 in its benchmark test while the M8 only got about 28000.
The Snapdragon 801 has a frequency of 2.5GHz while the M8’s Snapdragon 800 only has 2.3 GHz. Furthermore, both have 2GB RAM.
The HTC M8Sw follows the HTC M8’s design with plastic instead of metal, lowering the price to 2999 RMB. The CPU was upgraded to the Snapdragon 801 making it more powerful than the HTC M8. It also supports China Unicom’s 4G internet with speed that goes up to 100Mbps as well as dual-SIM.
UMI Mobile announced that they would lower the price of their Big Red Bull phone from 1399 RMB (224.72 USD) to 999 RMB at their official flagship stores.
The UMI Big Red Bull’s operating system is the Aliyun 0S. It has a 6.44-inch 1080p LTPS display screen. Its CPU is the MTK’s quad-core MT6589T and it has 2GB RAM, 32 GB ROM, an 8mp/13mp HD camera, and a 4180mha battery. It supports WCDMA+GSM dual-SIM. However, UMI dropped NFC for the Big Red Bull but it still supports OTG, a gyroscope, and a noise-cancelling dual-microphone. It uses LDS antenna architecture and Yamaha audio chips.
The Big Red Bull is a transitional work of UMI like the UMI CROSS. Not only does it have strong features but there are clear improvements in their craftsmanship.
The Honor 6 uses the Kiring 920 which is made up of four A15 cores and four A7 cores. Its GPU is the Mali-T628. This phone also sports a 5-inch 1080p touch screen, with 3GB RAM and 16/32GB internal memory space. It also has a 5mp/13mp dual-camera. Its operating system is the Android 4.4.2 and is powered. Lastly, it’s powered by a 3100 mAh battery.

This week’s blogging news sees Xiaomi’s massive price cuts defended, JD.com promoting themselves on a motor scooter and the bitter rivalry between the major players Tencent and Alibaba/UCWeb being played out in various short articles.
Xiaomi’s CEO Lei Jun was in defence mode on his microblog this week; trying to persuade people that the huge price cut was not a last ditch attempt at meeting its own sales expectations. Xiaomi has cut the price of its third generation model by 25%, and this is rumoured to be because of the need to clear excess inventory and give the firm a chance of meeting their target of selling 60 million smartphones in 2014. Lei’s blog responses were apparently amused by the insinuations but there was no direct denial to any of the claims except to say that Xiaomi is aggressively expanding capacity to meet demand. Although with the huge competition from the many new high quality and cheap smartphones, it seems plausible that Xiaomi are beginning to feel the strain and possibly take steps to compete more effectively.
JD.com spent the week waxing lyrical about its annual promotional event which took place on June 18th; featuring some memorable photographs of JD’s founder Richard Liu delivering products around Beijing on a motor scooter. The first event of this kind took place in 2010 and this year JD reported its order intakes had doubled from last year’s figures. Liu’s personal blog was strangely silent regarding the promotion, but other JD executives were sufficiently indulgent about it on their microblogs. Vice President Xu Lei, apart from hyping JD’s own promotional event, pointed out the other companies who used June 18th as a day for promotion. Suning and Alibaba representatives were tweeting about their own events so it seems June 18th is becoming a major sales event for all.
Also, there has been much cynicism regarding the role of Tencent in bringing about a record fine for piracy for rival company Alibaba in relation to the recently acquired UCWeb web browser. It has been reported that Tencent was a major force pushing for the fine of 260 million yuan. He has been roundly criticised by executives of both Alibaba and UCWeb, which seems a little odd given that piracy is something that harms all of the big players and all stand to benefit from harsh sanctions in the end.
Considering the powerful handheld devices available these days, it is strange that it has taken so long for the streaming capabilities of the average homeowner to catch up. It might have just happened, however, Xiaomi’s 4K Mi TV2 is now available and it contains a groundbreaking component. Broadcom’s 5G Wifi chip is actually capable of providing the speed, bandwidth and range to achieve seamless connectivity with other devices, online mobile gaming and HD-quality streaming.
This kind of technological breakthrough could herald a huge increase in demand for smart TVs, with Gartner2 reporting that 85% of all LCD TVs will be Smart TVs by 2018, and it is the synchronisation of devices that is demanded the most from new technology, so the 5G capability is bound to be a popular advancement. It is something of a match made in heaven if the spokespeople are to be believed, with Broadcom Senior Director Alex Chou effusing “By combining our cutting edge technology with their own design expertise,Xiaomihas raised the bar for smart TV performance and delivered a remarkable new home entertainment experience to the China consumers.”It certainly is cutting edge technology, with the 5G performing up to 3 times faster and with six times more power than the earlier 802.11 version, it provides 8 times the capacity and broader coverage with improved reliability. This gigantic stride forward, when coupled with Xiaomi’s design and value is certainly a product worth investing in.
Oppo are making quite a name for themselves, they have very competitive products in all ends of the market from budget to top-end and are establishing themselves as quite a powerhouse. This Oppo Find 5 mini is a mid-spec phone for the mainstream sector and it contains many of the build and design qualities that make Oppo devices so appealing, compensating for the lower specifications of hardware. We spent the day with the Oppo Find 5 Mini and this is how it went.
The phone looks very impressive, the packaging is plain but the phone itself is striking: small and light without feeling flimsy. The buttons are well-designed and the phone is easy to grip. The 4.7 inch screen means the phone fits comfortably in hand. The qHD display is not perfect but coupled with the IPS it is a pretty good effort, and the display is good overall, with no visible pixellation and striking colours.
The hardware is a bit of a disappointment, most notably the MediaTek MT6582 quad-core chipset and 1GB of RAM means the phone lacks power compared to other smartphones of its market. That said, it is able to run the Colour OS, with the only noticeable drop in speed occuring when switching between power-heavy apps and games.
The camera possesses some nice features, the rear is 8MP and has auto-focus, HDR and Panorama shooting modes. The photograph below was taken with the Find 5 Mini and it is of perfectly acceptable quality for the price.
The Find 5 Mini is on the market at a reasonable Rs 19,990 competing with the likes of the Sony Experia M2 Dual, it remains to be seen which of these is the best bet for your money, we haven’t seen enough of the Find 5 Mini yet to be sure.
