After reviewing quite a few Leagoo phones, I have an opinion that the company usually makes decent phones for a bargain price. The Leagoo S8 aims to continue that tradition by offering premium full-screen design and a lot more for just about $130. Learn more in our full Leagoo S8 review.

UNBOXING

The phone ships with all the usual stuff and some extras include a pair of earphones and a soft TPU case.

DESIGN and DISPLAY

The Leagoo S8 is yet another budget phone that has a full-screen design but I have to tell you that this is one of my favorites since the device just feels nice in the hand. That brilliant 5.7” HD+ display with 18:9 aspect ratio and tiny side bezels make the phone narrow and comfortable to hold even though the device is taller than phones with 16:9 aspect ratio displays. The panel itself is great but I wish it was a little bit brighter.

The build quality is solid and the phone looks premium thanks to the metal frame with nice buttons and glass backplate.

The Leagoo S8 is one of those rare budget phones that has a dual camera setup both on the back and on the front.

Now a few features as quickly as possible: the fingerprint scanner is accurate but the display could light up faster, there is a front-facing LED flash for selfies and another LED for notifications.

Finally, the loudspeaker quality does not really impress like on most of the budget phones.

HARDWARE and PERFORMANCE

As most of these budget phones, the Leagoo S8 ships with good specs for the price.

I like that gaming performance is pretty good even in the highest graphics settings, which is always impressive on any budget phone. However, the Leagoo S8 gets hot on the upper portion of the phone very quickly.

BENCHMARKS

USER INTERFACE

When it comes to the user interface, the phone runs Android 7 with the Leagoo’s skin on top of it. I don’t like the fact that they took away the app launcher and for some reason, Leagoo added their own Play Store that I didn’t really use. As for added features, there aren’t too many to talk about. You can customize the navigation bar, switch on/off LED notification light and that’s about it. You can also choose from quite a few different themes, wallpapers or change the transition effects. As for the day to day performance, the Leagoo S8 is a fast phone as I’m yet to see it lag or stutter.

IMAGE QUALITY

The overall image quality is pretty good given the fact that I could only test the camera on a dark and cloudy day, meaning that the lighting was poor. The dual-camera setup may be fun to play with for some time but the camera’s software simply draws a circle around the center of the image, meaning this is not the best-looking bokeh effect.

Selfies look pretty good in daylight and the front facing LED flash is pretty powerful in lower lit environment.

The 1080p video quality is just mediocre. What is a bit frustrating is that the audio is being recorded to the right channel only.

Selfie camera is able to shoot videos only in 480p, meaning that the quality of the footage is kind of poor.

CONNECTIVITY

In terms of connectivity, I can’t really complain. I found the call quality and signal reception to be quite good and other connectivity options work fine.

The phone ships with 12 sensors including the gyroscope, so you are all set if you want to use the device with VR headsets.

BATTERY LIFE

A 2900mAh power bank assures a pretty much standard battery life. I could get over 5.5h of screen-on time but this measurement is always subjective, so your results may vary.

It takes about 1.5h to fully charge the phone with the supplied fast charger, which is a great result for a budget phone. However, the phone still uses the micro USB port, not the USB type C.

CONCLUSIONS

Overall, the Leagoo S8 shapes up to be one of the better all-around budget full-screen phones out there. Sure, it has a few minor caveats to consider like poor audio in video recording mode, micro USB port instead of the USB Type C but in general, this is a solid and nice-looking phone that is not going to break your bank.

DESIGN

The first thing you notice about the phone is that its compact. And not just compact according to 5.5-inch standards, it’s as small as a 5-inch smartphone. For example, comparing the 5-inch Redmi 4A with the 5.5-inch KIICAA Mix reveals that the phone is only as tall as the 4A. It does compensate the larger screen size with a few additional mm in width, but overall, it’s one of the most compact 5.5-inchers that you’ll find in the market. Given its $110 pricing, this is really a commendable feat.

One hand operation is going to be easy with its compact form factor and 157 g weight. The overall design is pretty simple. Buttons on the right are tactile and responsive, the bottom features USB Type-C port and a speaker, on the left you have the dual SIM hybrid slot and on top you have the earpiece. Yes, this brings us to one of the biggest design flaws in the KIICAA Mix. The earpiece, which traditionally lies on the front, is shifted to the top to accommodate the bezel-less design. But this results in bad call quality. I mean, you can hardly hear what the person on the other side is trying to say. It’s that bad! I have been using the phone for more than a week and I always had to ask the person calling on my phone to call back on my second number. You can’t have a conversation lasting more than a couple of minutes on the KIICAA Mix, and even if you try hard enough, you’d start missing a lot of sentences in between. 

Moving on, the front features a fingerprint embedded home button and it’s as good as other phones in this segment. It’s actually a multi-purpose button that acts as a home button, back button, and a recent apps button.

Apart from the earpiece, rest of the design is pretty solid. It’s actually a shame that the ear piece is this bad. The compact form factor makes this phone a very comfortable handset for everyday use. It’s really hard to find an equally compact 5.5-incher anywhere near this price, especially with FHD 1080p display. 

DISPLAY

The display is kind of a surprise. Considering its $110 price, when I got the Leagoo KIICAA Mix review unit, I expected an average screen with dull levels of saturation. That wasn’t the case with the phone. The phone has a vibrant display, which is nearly bezel-less on three sides. It’s a FHD 1080p panel and the overall quality is better than the similarly priced Redmi Note 5A.

The brightness levels are good and even outdoor visibility is satisfactory. Thanks to this 1080p display panel, watching videos on the screen is a pleasure. 

At this price, it’s really hard to find a better screen.

PERFORMANCE

The MT6750T octa-core chip manages to handle everything with ease. The UI is snappy and apps open up pretty quickly. For some reason, youtube took more time to load than the Snapdragon 425 powered 5A, but in most cases, the KIICAA Mix was faster to open up applications.

Games like subway surfer run with ease, but what’s really impressive is that even higher-end graphic games like Modern Combat 5 run well with minimal lag on the device. Considering how the same game lagged on the Redmi Note 5A, I would have to say that the graphics performance of the device is pretty good. 

In short, the performance of the $110 Leagoo KIICAA Mix is quite impressive for its price! Plus, you get ample 32GB of storage for all your videos and docs.

SOFTWARE

The Leagoo KIICAA Mix runs on Android 7 Nougat and the overall UI performance is smooth. Unlike other companies who have moved towards stock Android UI, Leagoo has a customized launcher, which I’m not a big fan of! There’s no app drawer and the overall UI is quite different from vanilla Android experience. It’s not too bad, but I always prefer stock Android over custom launchers, and I wish the company would have opted for a simple setup. That said, you get used to the UI quickly and its something that won’t bother you in the long run.

CONNECTIVITY

Connectivity wise, everything is good. Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS, all have solid coverage. But speakers are a let down. The sound output is low and the quality is mediocre. Plus, there’s no headphone jack and you have to live with the provided USB Type-C earphones, which suck. The sound comes out hollow and its noway near to the good quality 3.5mm headphones that we are used to. Now I might be a bit too harsh in saying that the provided Type-C headphones suck, but the company didn’t even provide a 3.5mm to Type-C connector inside the box. So, even though its as good as other stock headphones that you get with cheap phones, you can’t use any other headphones, simply because there’s no connector. I feel the company could have included the adapter to make things a lot easier. 

BATTERY

The 3000mAh battery is not very large, but it manages to power the device for a day. Moderate usage ranging from watching a few videos, playing a game and browsing on 4G brought the battery down to 10% by the end of the day. But that’s pretty decent. The phone also charges pretty quickly – it goes from 10% to 100% in less than 1.5 hours.

CAMERA

I always tend to keep camera at last for local Chinese phones, simply because they tend to suck. Things are the same in this Leagoo KIICAA Mix review because the phone, as usual, comes with issues like slow focus, unusable portrait mode, and dull colors ruining the camera experience. That said, I could take a few decent shots a couple of times, but the results are never consistent. There’s nothing more to elaborate about the camera, so its best to look at the provided samples to check out its quality. Be advised, it’s just average.

CONCLUSION

To sum up, the Leagoo KIICAA Mix is a fantastic phone with a couple of big flaws. I loved the compact body, its vibrant display and snappy performance, but things like bad call quality and no headphone jack does ruin the experience. In many ways, the phone could have outdone the Redmi Note 5A which is currently one of the best 5.5-inchers in the price range. But it’s the simple things like call quality and headphone jack that matter the most to a regular user and if that’s flawed, it’s really hard to recommend the phone for everyday use.

Sony is the supplier for the f/2.0 13MP and f/2.2 2MP sensors on the rear. The sensors are stacked vertically on top of one another with a dual LED flash above and a fingerprint scanner below.

The LEAGOO S8 has a built-in 3050mAh battery with support for 5V/2A quick charge via a micro USB port. There is a hybrid dual SIM tray (micro and nano) positioned at the top of the phone. There is Bluetooth, WiFi, and OTG support.

The S8 Pro on the other hand has a 5.99-inch 2160 x 1080p display. It has a Helio P25 chip paired with 6GB of LPPDR4X RAM and 64GB of internal storage.

The S8 Pro has dual rear cameras. One is a 13MP sensor from OmniVision and the other is a 5MP camera from Samsung. Up front is a single Samsung 13MP sensor for selfies.

It appears all three will be powered by MediaTek’s new MT6763 processor. This is an octa-core chip built using the 16nm process. It is clocked at 2.0GHz and consists of 8 Cortex-A53 cores paired with a Mali G71 MP2 GPU. RAM will start at 4GB and max out at 6GB and it will be paired with 64GB and 128GB of storage respectively.

Images provided of the KIICAA S8 look good. It uses on-screen buttons and its fingerprint scanner is placed below the dual camera setup which has a familiar design.

For approximately $100, you get a phone with a dual-curved screen, 2GB RAM and a MT6737 SoC. Other specs include a 13MP rear camera, an 8MP front shooter, dual SIM LTE and a 2000mAh battery. At the Global Sources Electronics Show last month, Leagoo announced it’s new phone, the M5 Edge. We got to learn of all the details especially its 3D Edgeless display which Leagoo says has an 80% screen-to-body ratio. However, we didn’t get to see a live image of the device.

Thanks to Twitter user @jorkerlee who posted real images of the device, we now have a good idea of what to expect when it launches.

The Leagoo M5 Edge has a dual-curved HD display. Although Leagoo said the phone will be available in Champagne Gold and Obsidian Black, the unit in the image is silver.

The front of the phone looks nice but the lower bezel is pretty huge, leading us to doubt the 80% screen-to-body ratio. The dimensions on the official website states that the phone measures 140 × 68.3 × 8.5mm. So we decided to do the math and came up with 72% instead. That’s a significant difference and we hope Leagoo clears the air on that.

We think the front bezels could have just been made smaller since the fingerprint scanner is positioned at the back and the battery is just 2000mAh.

The M5 Edge has a 13MP rear camera with a slight hump. Right below it is the LED flash and the fingerprint scanner. There are also holes drilled at the bottom for the speaker. The front camera is an 8MP  77.9° wide-angle camera.

The Leagoo M5 Edge is powered by a MT6737 SoC paired with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. There is microSD card support and dual SIM slots. It runs Leagoo’s Freeme OS 6.0 which is based on Android Marshmallow. Official launch is said to be next month but there is still no specific date yet.

The Global Sources Electronics Show is  the largest electronics sourcing show and its second phase, Mobile Electronics is the biggest trade show in the world. Held twice every year (April and October) at the AsiaWorld-Expo in Hong Kong, the show brings together lots of manufacturers and suppliers of electronics. This year’s edition has Chinese manufacturer, Leagoo present at the event and they have seized the opportunity to announce a new phone, the Leagoo M5 Edge.

Leagoo says the M5 Edge is their first bezel-less smartphone. It has what they call a 3D Edgeless display which has received several patents. From the promotional images provided, one can see that the M5 Edge’ display is curved on both sides like that of the Samsung S7 Edge. The back is made of metal and cut using the CNC technique giving it perfect round edges at the corners.

Leagoo M5 Edge Specs

The M5 Edge has a 5-inch 720p display with an 80% screen-to-body ratio and a ppi of 294. There is a Mediatek MT6737 quad-core processor under the hood. The RAM is 2GB and storage is 16GB but can be expanded via a MicroSD card (128GB max).

There is a 13MP f/2.0 shooter on the back and an 8MP f/2.4 77.9° wide-angle sensor for selfies. Powering the Leagoo M5 Edge is a modest 2000mAh battery. There is dual SIM support, LTE, and Bluetooth 4.0 and the phone runs Android Marshmallow with Leagoo’s Freeme OS 6.0 on top.

The M5 Edge is available in Champagne Gold and Obsidian Black. However, Leagoo has not yet revealed the price neither have they announced a date of release.

Leagoo has been in the market for the past few years, building a reputation as an affordable smartphone maker. I personally have been checking out the devices from this brand for the past couple of years and so far the company has done a decent job of releasing value for money smartphones. A few months back, Leagoo released one of the best entry-level handsets in the market, the Leagoo M5 Plus and today, I have finally got my hands on the M5 Plus for a review.

In the Box:

Before we start this Leagoo M5 Plus review, I will have to mention that the phone came with all the usual stuff that you get in a smartphone box. So, there’s the phone itself along with the charger, scratch guard (already installed on the display) and a manual in English. It is worth noting that you get headphones in the box as well, which isn’t good, but it’s still a bit decent than other stock headphones provided in the box.

DESIGN

Earlier, budget segment offered very little when it came to built and looks. However, things have taken a turn for the good in 2016, as now we have phones that compete with the likes of the premium segment despite having a cheap price tag. Leagoo M5 Plus comes in the above category and I must say that the company has done a wonderful job with the phone’s design.

The Leagoo M5 Plus is built using a combination of metal and plastic, which has become a norm these days. The quality of workmanship is top notch and plastic as well as the metal parts feel premium. Even in the front, thanks to the 2.5D curved glass, the M5 Plus manages to grab your attention. So, you will definitely be happy with the phone’s looks.

The phone is beautiful and heavy. Now, the latter part is pretty evident in your everyday usage as it weighs more than many other mid-range smartphones in the market today. While 170 grams may not be too heavy for some, it definitely takes some time getting used to. And if you are someone who texts while lying on the bed, make sure you never lose grip as the phone meeting your face won’t be a pretty sight.

The buttons are on the right, made out of metal that blends well with the metal frame. They are built well and feel tactile. There’s a camera on the front and a few sensors, and at the bottom of the display, you have three capacitive buttons. The left side of the phone is clean, the top features a 3.5mm headphone jack while at the back, you have a standard MicroUSB port.

I got the white model and the back texture is glossy. But it’s not the gloss that attracts fingerprint. So, your fingerprints won’t become a part of its subtle texture. The single LED flash, camera, speakers, as well as fingerprint are located on the back.

One thing to note in the Leagoo M5 Plus is that it’s back panel is fixed firmly. I found it hard to get the back panel off to access the SIM card and MicroSD slots.

PERFORMANCE & BENCHMARK:

The Leagoo M5 Plus comes with MT6737 1.3GHz quad-core chip which is the latest entry level chipset from the company. It’s a decent processor for an entry level device and manages to sail through the Freeme OS without major hiccups. For $90, that’s pretty decent. Opening up apps usually take a second, which is also decent.

In the AnTuTu benchmark, the phone scores: 28942

The phone runs on FreemeOS and I have to say that it does a pretty decent job powering the UI. It’s easy to work with stock UI because it’s lighter but with FreemeOS, there are a lot of themes, icons, and animations that the phone has to power, and it’s good to see MT6737 manage this well. It may not be the smoothest UI implementations on a phone in the segment, but I personally felt very limited lag on the device.

I have tried streaming youtube videos on the device and it was pretty smooth. The app opens up quickly and the video loads almost instantly as well. As for the browsing experience, it takes a second or two to load the entire page but once it’s loaded the scrolling and pinch to zoom all work smoothly. I had only a few tabs open on Chrome and switching between them didn’t bring any issues or lag.

One feature I was particularly impressed about the Leagoo M5 Plus was its fingerprint sensor. Once I saved my fingerprint, the phone unlocks with a touch on the sensor almost instantly. Given that it is such a cheap smartphone, I am definitely impressed by its super fast sensor.

CAMERA:

Camera is never usually the selling point of low-cost Chinese smartphones, but in the past few months things have seen a bit of an improvement. Of course, it’s nowhere close to what you get from $200+ smartphones, but for a couple of occasional shots, the Leagoo M5 Plus should be enough.

What I personally found was that the 13MP camera at the back of the phone captured just average photos. Most of the times the images were slightly washed out and the colors were dull. I, personally expected the camera to perform better, at least in terms of color reproduction, but was disappointed on most occasions. And when you manage to get good colors on the image, the sensor for some reason decides not to focus properly resulting in grainy and unfocused images.

Moral of the story: You need very good lighting to capture decent images with the M5 Plus. Unfortunately, I wasn’t very lucky to get extremely good lighting in my pictures, which is why the rear camera samples don’t look too good.

Now, this should give you an indication that the M5 Plus is also not a selfie expert. But I managed to get a couple of decent ones with a little bit of effort.

BATTERY:

Battery is yet another area where the Leagoo M5 Plus doesn’t shine too much. Well, this isn’t exactly surprising given that you get a small 2500mAh battery inside, which really brings you to the big questions — why is the phone so heavy?! For such a small battery phone, it’s really a pity that the M5 Plus weighs so much. The body isn’t beautiful enough to justify its weight.

Despite its small battery, note that the phone lasts about a day, thanks to the efficient MT6737 quad-core chip inside.

CONCLUSION:

If it was early 2016, the Leagoo M5 Plus would have been something that I could recommend. Heck, if they managed to bring down the weight of the phone, I would have considered the phone. But with the phone being unnecessarily heavy along with the less than impressive camera, it’s very hard to recommend the Leagoo M5 Plus. It’s yet another story of what could have been a great smartphone ruined by small factors.

Despite the above-mentioned issues, I would not take away its positive points. The Leagoo M5 Plus comes with attractive and appealing looks, the freemeOS can be called as visually pleasing for most users and finally, the fingerprint sensor works great. Yes, it’s fast and accurate almost all the time.

If you are ready to ignore the fact that the phone is super heavy, the Leagoo M5 Plus turns out to be a decent entry level handset.

Leagoo M5 Review: DESIGN and DISPLAY

The Leagoo M5 is a very well-built phone. It uses a solid metal frame that goes all around the device and tactile metal buttons. Honestly, the phone feels a lot sturdier than some more expensive devices out there.

Although the backplate is glossy and it attracts fingerprints and smudges, it still feels high quality.

Since it is a $60 phone, we don’t have neither notification LED light nor backlit capacitive buttons but a 5” 720p display is sharp enough for the daily use.

Also, the phone is very compact but it is kind of on a heavy side as it weighs 180g.

We have an 8MP camera and a fingerprint sensor, which are installed in a high-quality metal frame. Speaking of that fingerprint sensor, it is not the fastest I’ve seen but it definitely gets the job done and it works straight from the standby mode. Also, you can use the fingerprint sensor as a touchpad. The ability to scroll through the menus is one of my favorite features.

It’s not that easy to remove a backplate but underneath it, you can find 2 SIM card slots, microSD card slot and a removable 2300mAh battery.

I was fairly impressed by the loudspeaker quality. Sure, it is not the best but it is better than a lot of phones that costs as twice as much.

Leagoo M5 Review: HARDWARE and PERFORMANCE

For $60, the Leagoo M5 has some pretty good specs. The phone ships with the quad-core Mediatek 6580A chip, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of expandable storage.

The 3D gaming performance is surprisingly good. The Asphalt 8, which is one of the most versatile games to test the phone’s performance runs absolutely fine on the medium graphics.

Having reviewed quite a few phones made by Leagoo, I knew what to expect. The Android 6 based user interface is highly customized. The app tray is gone but there are quite a few features and customization options. Some of them may look a bit gimmicky but others are actually pretty useful.

Most importantly, the phone has been fast and fluid even after installing quite a few apps.

Leagoo M5 Review: IMAGE QUALITY

You should never expect great-looking images from the phone this cheap and the Leagoo M5 is no exception. Sure, you can get some decent images that are usable for social media but nothing more.

Same can be said about the front facing camera.

I didn’t have any issues with neither of the connectivity options except for the fact that it takes a bit longer to get the GPS position lock.

A 2300mAh does not really sound impressive. The battery will get you through the day if you are not a heavy user only. That translates to just over 3 hours of screen-on time.

Leagoo M5 is a very solid phone for just $60. Sure, it is not a perfect device but even with a few shortcomings, it can be highly recommended if you are in the market of a super cheap smartphone for under $60.

There have been minor rumors going around recently about a new smartphone from the Chinese company Leagoo, called as the Leagoo M5. Now, we have a few more details to add about this upcoming device.

The new image reveals that the Leagoo M5 will come with a metal frame. We are not quite sure whether the body is made out of plastic or glass. But what we do know is that the phone will be compact, since it is expected to come with a 5-inch display. The compact and slim body should be good enough for one-handed operation. The volume buttons and the power button are all located on the right side of the device, while the USB port is situated at the bottom. This should mean that the speakers are located on the back of the phone.

As for the specs, the Leagoo M5 is said to come with 2GB RAM and 16GB ROM. The company will be using the FreemeOS 6.0 on the device, which is based on Android 6.0. We have no idea about the CPU inside, but it should be an entry level mid-ranger. While we don’t see it in the picture, at the back, the phone is also said to come with a fingerprint sensor, which has become a standard feature among Leagoo smartphones recently.

The price is said to be reasonable, but we have no official figures as of now. Stay tuned for more details in the coming days.

Once you pick the phone up, you’ll notice that it is huge do to it 5.5” display, large top and bottom bezels and rectangular shape. I don’t have the biggest hands in the world and thus, the phone is not really comfortable to hold.

Speaking of display, it is pretty good considering the fact that it has a 720p resolution and the price of the device. The panel is bright, has good viewing angles and it is sharp enough.

On the top we have a 5MP camera and some other usual stuff.

On the bottom, there are nicely backlit capacitive keys. The home button serves a notification light too. 

The backplate is made of plastic and it has a somewhat perforated surface.

In fact, you can easily remove it and underneath you will find two SIM card slots with only 3G support, a microSD card slot and a removable 3000mAh battery.

As for camera, we have 13MP shooter with an LED flash. 

The sides sport some nice looking metal elements. As for buttons, the power button feels a bit mushy. You need to press it a little harder to make it work.

Overall, the phone looks nice, it has a great build quality but I didn’t find it very comfortable to hold in the hand and the power button could be more tactile.

Leagoo Alfa 1 has a quad-core MTK6580 chip clocked at just 1GHz, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of expandable storage. 

When it comes to 3D gaming, the performance is actually not bad. Sure, the graphics don’t look stunning but you can still have an enjoyable gaming experience with just a few skipped frames and occasional stutter.

When it comes to the user interface, we have a highly customised version of Android 5.1.

There is no app tray but there are plenty of customisation options, e.g. you can choose from a variety of themes, some nice looking widgets, tweak various settings and so on.

There are some added features too. Just to name a few, we have plenty of gesture and motion controls, which actually work great. One of my favourite built-in apps is the security locker, which simply allows you to lock certain apps.

Overall, the UI is working fine. It is fast despite all those added features. Well, I had a few minor hiccups but nothing major.

As for the loudspeaker, it is surprisingly good and to be honest it is one of the best I’ve heard in a device that does not even cost $100.

However, the 1080p video playback is really laggy and it is almost impossible to watch videos stored on internal storage. I tried a few different players to confirm that.

The image quality is really good for a phone this cheap. Most of the shots have a decent amount of detail and the colour reproduction is good.

The quality decreases with a lower amount of light but you can still get some okay looking photos unless you take pictures in really dark environments.

The video quality is poor but it is on par with any other phone in this price range. See a video review for a video sample.

All the connectivity options like Wifi, Bluetooth and even GPS work fine but I the earpiece could be slightly louder.

The battery life is actually a bit of a letdown. The 3000mAh unit should be enough to power up a 5.5” 720p display but I could get just over 3 hours of screen-on time with a mixed use of the device.

Leagoo Alfa 1 is a pretty good phone if we consider a price of under $100. 

It has a good build quality, decent display, feature-rich and fluid user interface, a great loudspeaker and a good camera.

However, I’m not a huge fan of phone’s rectangular shape as it makes the device uncomfortable to hold in the hand. Also, the power button takes some time of getting used to as you need to press it little harder than usual to make it work. In addition, a laggy video playback is kind really disappointing.

One of my biggest complaints is the battery life. It is not the worst I’ve seen but just over 3 hours of screen-on time does not sound impressive.

Overall, Leagoo Alfa 1 is a decent offering and it may actually surprise you that it does not even cost $100. However, make sure to take the shortcomings into consideration before making a buying decision.

To be honest this is the first time I am reviewing the Leagoo phone and it made a great first impression by a nice looking box and a great overall presentation.

Everything’s packed neatly and the contents include the USB brick and a charging cable, OTG cable, a pair of headphones, SIM ejector pin, instruction manuals and a screen protector. That’s quite a bundle, I would say.

When it comes to the design, we are looking at a very sleek and premium feeling device, which is very well made and it uses metal and glass sandwich construction. Also, it is quite a compact phone due since it carries only 5” display.

The front is covered with the Gorilla Glass 3 and on the top we have an LED, which can light up in 3 different colours, earpiece, a generous 13MP selfie camera and front firing LED flash.

Leagoo implemented a physical home button, which also doubles as a fingerprint scanner and it is said to be covered with the saphire glass. We also have two backlit capacitive keys next to it.

The back is also covered by the Gorilla Glass 3 but it is a fingerprint magnet as all glass surfaces.

As far as optics, we have a 16MP shooter with dual LED flash.

The Leagoo Elite 1 has a quality metal frame and on the right we have a bunch of controls, which include a volume rocker, power key and guess what, there is a camera shutter button but it only has one stage.

On the left there is a dual SIM or a combo of one SIM and the microSD card slot.

On the top there is a headset jack and on the bottom you can find a mic, a speaker grill and the USB port.

Overall, I have to say that this is a one premium looking phone with very good build quality that can rival much more expensive phones as Leagoo Elite 1 costs just below $200.

When it comes to the display, we have a 5” 1080p IPS panel, which is nice and sharp to look at but I found colours to be on a colder side for my taste.

When it comes to the UI, we have a highly customised version of Android 5.1.

First of all, we don’t have an app tray but we have a bunch colourful icons and if you don’t like them, you can change the whole theme by simply pinching in on the display. Speaking of themes, you can download more of them on the dedicated online store.

Also, we have lots of animated widgets like the music player or gallery.

Whether you like gesture or motions controls or not, Leagoo  included a bunch of them, which are divided into different settings menus for some reason. Usually, I only use double tap to wake feature but I tried a few others and they work pretty good.

When it comes to the fingerprint security, the setup is pretty straightforward but I can’t say that the fingerprint scanner is the fastest one. Yes, it is pretty accurate (although not the most accurate) but it just takes time to recognise your fingerprint. Another  con is that it does not work straight from the standby mode.

Overall, the UI is fast on the daily use but you may see some choppiness in animations there and there if you are scrolling through menus very fast. However, it is far from a deal breaker.

The Leagoo Elite 1 uses an octa-core MTK6753 chip with the clock speeds of 1.3GHz, 3GB of RAM and 32GB of expandable storage. Well, we’ve seen these kind of specs on a bunch of China phones lately but it all comes to the right implementation. 

Luckily, the phone manages to handle 3D games very well. Honestly, there were just a few minor skipped frames but there is nothing worth complaining and you may get almost stutter free performance.

When it comes to the multimedia consumption, the loudspeaker is ok but there is nothing to be impressed about. It lacks depth and the sound is a bit tinny but ohh well, this is what you usually get for this price.

The sound via earphones is also okay but it is not stellar.

Despite lots of customisations in the UI, Leagoo decided to go with the stock Mediatek camera app we’ve seen on a lot of phones and I  guess it’s ok.

When it comes to the actual quality of the images, the 16MP camera is capable of producing some sharp looking photos with a good amount of details, natural colour reproduction and great contrast.

However, the sensor is having a hard time dealing with direct sunlight rays and some of the pictures have softer focus on the corners.

As usual, the quality declines when the sensor does not get as much light but the Elite 1 is not that bad performer. Well, it is not great either as the images have quite a lot of noise, not that much details and the camera does not always illuminate the scene to make it more visible. Still, this phone is a bit better than lots of phones I’ve tested in this price range.

When it comes to selfies, the camera is inconsistent. Sometimes, you can get a decent looking photo but the problem is that sometimes camera struggles focusing right, which leads to blurry images.

Leagoo Elite 1 is a one pleasant surprise, to be honest with you. The company is pretty serious about the presentation and it can be seen from the packaging to the design and the materials used in this phone.

It is a premium looking device that is compact and the Elite 1 has a feature-rich UI, which is running smoothly most of the times, a well-optimized processing package, which leads to a good gaming performance. Also, the phone has a pretty good but not perfect camera.

However, the Leagoo Elite 1 has a slow yet accurate fingerprint scanner and the battery life does not impress.

Other than that, the phone is a good offering considering the price if you don’t mind a few shortcomings… and if you choose the Elite 1, no one will think this is a sub-$200 phone.

Next up in the list is the recently announced Zeaplus M4. This is another beautiful looking phone as it is the clone of the popular Xiaomi Mi4 flagship. So, if you like the Mi4, the Zeaplus M4 should definitely be on your list.

Those who hate smooth back texture on their phones, can take a look at the Cubot S200 smartphone. Unlike the M4 and the Neo M1, the S200 comes with a rough back panel, which makes it easier to hold the device. It may not be as pretty as the above two, but we know there are some buyers who will like its design.

If you are looking for something more powerful, then you can go for the new THL T6 Pro. It comes with a Mediatek MT6592m Cortex A7 processor clocked at 1.4 Ghz. This should give you more than enough power to run any apps or games on the device without any lag. For RAM, you get 1GB and for storage, you have 8GB internal with MicroSD card expansion support.

On the back there’s an 8MP camera which clicks decent pictures while on the front, there is a 2MP sensor. The screen is of 5 inches like the earlier listed models and comes with 720p resolution. Battery is a bit of a disappointment, as it comes with only 1,900 mAh capacity Li-Polymer battery. But even with 8 cores, the device should survive a day, owing to the less powerful power efficient Cortex A7 processor.

Design wise, the device has nothing new to offer, but the it feels well built and the power of 8 cores should definitely attract a lot of new users to the company.

5. THL 4000

Cubot S200 isn’t the only smartphone in town with a large battery. In fact, if you are looking for a device that will really last for more than a day, even with heavy use, then the THL 4000 is perfect for you. The THL model makes up for what its elder brother THL T6 lacked, with a large 4,000 mAh battery (hence the Name THL 4000!). This is really the most you can get on a smartphone under $100.

So, you must be wondering why didn’t we list it ahead of the S200. Well, the reason is simple. Apart from the large battery, the THL 4000 is a very average phone Although the basic package remains the same – MTK6582 1.3Ghz Quad Core processor + 1GB RAM + 8GB ROM, the camera sensor and the display are much smaller than what you get from the earlier listed devices. For example, you just have a 4.7 inch screen with 960 x 540 qHD resolution. Rear camera is of 5MP and the front camera is of 2MP.

However, for a smaller camera sensor and display, you have to shell out a lot less than other phones in its class. Usually, you will have to pay around $99 for the THL 4000, but you can get it for $91 from Comebuy for a limited period. There’s also an option to ship it from German Warehouse.

Don’t have $100 to spend on your next smartphone or looking for an extremely cheap back up smartphone? We have a device which satisfies this need too. We present the cheapest smartphone in the list, the Cubot 168. Its less than $80 but only sacrifices in some areas to get to this price tag.

For example, the display remains at 5 inches like most other phones in the list, but the resolution is reduced to qHD i.e. 960 x 540 pixels. Also, the battery is small and at 1,900 mAh capacity, it should barely last you an entire day. However, other than this, the features are the same as the S200. So you have a MT6582 Quad Core processor, 1GB RAM and 8GB internal storage with a MicroSD card slot. Camera too remains the same at 8MP rear sensor and 5MP front sensor.

So, the choice is simple. If you are short on cash and are looking for a cheap smartphone, Cubot S168 should serve you well.

Let me remind you that you have a powerful Quad Core processor as well as a decent display in this phone, so things are not as bad as you may think. Its just that you have better options out there, all for less than a $100 which makes this device look a bit weak.  But for $80, we think you get much more than your money’s worth.

 7. KingSing S2

If you didn’t like the design on the earlier listed phones, there’s a very good chance that the KingSing S2 won’t disappoint you. This is because, S2 is a clone of one of the most beautiful smartphones currently available in the market. the LG G3. It even features the same rear volume and power buttons like the G3.

The build is quite solid with a glossy back cover (unlike the metal finish on the G3) and looks wise, you will be impressed for sure (for a device of this price). Surprisingly, there’s even a heart rate sensor on the device, which although isn’t very accurate, it could be something that you can boast about your $100 smartphone.

Inside, the specifications are pretty average. You get a Quad Core 1.3GHz MTK6582 processor with 1GB RAM and 8GB storage with memory card slot. Like most other models, you have a 5 inch display up front, but unfortunately, the resolution is just qHD i.e. 960 x 540 pixels. For camera you have 8MP sensor at the back and a 2MP sensor up front. The battery is also decent, a 2,000 mAh capacity(though we would have loved atleast 2,300mAh), which with the power efficient processor and the lower resolution screen should be just enough to last an entire day.

So, the only reason you would choose this device from other rivals in the market is because of its design. But, there’s one more incentive. The KingSing S2 is available at Giztop for just $89, cheaper than most other phones in the list.

8. Elephone G5

All the phones we have covered till now feature 5 inch screen or less. But those who are looking for something bigger, can go for the new Elephone G5 smartphone.
