Now, the series is heading to other markets starting with China and the first device is the yet-to-be-announced Galaxy F52 5G.

An official poster for the Galaxy F52 5G was shared on Weibo a few days ago by a user that goes by Instant Digital. The image shows the phone in two color variants – Black and White. It also reveals that it will be available for pre-order starting on Thursday, May 20.

According to the Weibo user who shared the poster online, he was already aware the Galaxy F52 5G would be released in China as far back as December 2020 judging from a screenshot of an earlier Weibo post.

It has been reported that the Galaxy F52 5G will have a 6.57-inch FHD+ LCD display with a hole punch at the top right corner of the screen. It will have a Snapdragon 750G processor powering it, 64MP quad rear cameras, a 16MP selfie camera, and a 4350mAh battery with support for 25W fast charging. These occurrences happened suddenly and people have already started going on Weibo, a Chinese microblogging website, to share their incidents.

Earlier this week, a Weibo user shared his experience with his Galaxy smartphone bricking while he was just using it. The device apparently crashed suddenly with a black screen that sometimes also led to gibberish and garbled characters being displayed. The bricked smartphones also get stuck on infinite restart animations and are locked in the reboot sequence.

Images shared by Samsung users that are suffering from this issue have also revealed that people can occasionally get stuck in a mode similar to a PC’s Bios mode. Once this screen is displayed, the handset no longer responds and cannot be used anymore, essentially bricking them. From the various online reports, the affected handsets include, Galaxy S8, Galaxy S9, Galaxy S10, Galaxy A60, and even the latest flagship Galaxy S20 series.

Editor’s Pick: Samsung announces mid-range Exynos 880 SoC with integrated 5G modem

Notably, an image depicted a Samsung demo smartphone in a physical store also being bricked. Thus, it seems that the entire Samsung lineup in China may be affected by this unusual bug. Chinese Samsung users have also theorized that it could’ve been caused by a server hack in the region, but that is still unconfirmed. As of right now, no official solution has been provided by the South Korean tech giant. Although a few interesting rumors are being circulated online.

According to one user, the issue may have been caused by the smartphone’s lock screens. Apparently, the lunar calendar for April hadn’t been calculated correctly by Samsung’s inbuilt systems, causing the devices to brick at certain moments. The timing of the malfunction is still random. Third party calendar applications are not affected by the bug and do not cause the crash. As of right now, Samsung has yet to give an official solution for the bricked phones.

Previously, Samsung Electronics had already sent 200 engineers to the Xian plant last month. Furthermore, the new workers being sent to China will be exempted from the mandatory 14 days of isolation. This is made possible through the new “fast-track” entry, which was approved between South Korea and China. Although, these workers will be quarantined for at least three days and testings to ensure there are no positive infection cases being brought in.

At the moment, the Xian plant is Samsung’s only chip factory in an overseas land. This plant makes 3D NAND flash memory and is set to receive an additional 8 billion US Dollars in funding for further expansion. The plant located in the Guangdong province of China first started producing phones on December 1992. It is presently the only functional Samsung production plant in China and around June this year, the company scaled down production at the plant with reports of workers getting laid off.

The steady rise to prominence of local phone manufacturers in China signalled the decline of Samsung phones in what was one of its strongholds. Samsung controlled more than 20% share of the market in the hay days but as Chinese brands continue to surge in growth, the Korean company continued to lose market share. The local OEMs like OPPO, Vivo, Xiaomi and others were able to gain ground against the global market leader by offering premium models at affordable prices. Samsung’s market share in China was below 1% as at the end of 2018.

EDITOR’S PICK: First Samples from the 108MP Mi Mix Alpha is here & we are not impressed!

In recent times, Samsung has made efforts to reclaim its lost glory in the Chinese market and other markets like India where Chinese OEMs have grabbed a chunk of the market share for her hands. The company recently shifted its focus to the midrange segment with the Galaxy A series and other premium but affordable models. The Korean tech giant is also exploiting the use of ODM to manufacture its phones for the local market in a bid to cut the cost of production and thus bring down the retail price. The Galaxy A6s and A9s were the first devices to be manufactured by an ODM.

Samsung still continues production of smartphones in its plants in Thailand and Vietnam, though. However, it remains to be seen if there would be any chance of a return to China in the future. Time will tell.

The Samsung W2019 is the latest in Samsung’s W-series clamshell phone exclusive to China. The phone was seen on TENAA a few weeks ago but only images and a few specs were revealed. A lot of hands-on images have also surfaced on the web.

In the past year, the W-series has served as a sort of testing ground for some features Samsung later adopted for its other flagships. For example, last year’s model was the first to have a camera with a variable aperture. We haven’t heard of any special feature this model will have. However, images have confirmed that it will come with dual rear cameras like the Galaxy Note9 and the Galaxy S9+.

The Samsung W2019 will have dual 4.2-inch screens, a Snapdragon 845 processor, and a 3,000mAh battery. It will also not have an audio jack like the W2018.

However, recent reports have revealed that the South Korean tech giant is working on a strategy to dethrone Xiaomi in the country. In China too, Samsung is now aggressively employing its new strategy of targeting the mid-range smartphone market to regain its lost glory. In Q4 2017, it was ousted to 12th position in terms of smartphone market share in China. However, a fresh report reveals that its new strategy has allowed the company to reenter the top 10 list.

One of the reasons why the company lost its market share was that it continued to sell high-end phones with hefty price tags whereas Chinese counterparts started selling flagship phones with cheaper pricing. The Galaxy Note 9 that arrived in China with a starting price of 6,999 Yuan (~$1,006) was met with lukewarm response soon after its launch. Also, Chinese smartphone OEMs also began offering flagship features on mid-range smartphones.

The South Korean company has recently launched the quad camera Galaxy A9s and Galaxy A6s with respective starting price of 3,499 Yuan (~$503) and 1,799 Yuan (~$259). The budget-friendly Galaxy A6s is reportedly receiving better market response in China. In additional to selling high-end phones, Samsung is now focusing more on the mid-range and low-end market in China. Also, the company is now selling phones customized for the Chinese market.

According to Sino, Samsung sold 1.23 million units in China in Q3 2018. In Q1 2018, the company’s market share declined to 0.8 percent, but in Q3 it has moved has increased to 1.1 percent. This has allowed the South Korean company to move to 9th position in China. The lack of Samsung phones in the mid-range market allowed Chinese brands like Huawei, OPPO, Vivo and Xiaomi to gain market share quickly.

A deal would see Samsung phones bearing the company’s logo but manufactured by Wintech. Of course, the models will have to meet Samsung’s quality standards.

Related: Samsung’s Market Share in China & India Declining Steadily

This move could be as a result of the company’s declining market share in China. Such a move could also result in Samsung models becoming competitively priced since parts will be sourced locally. It would also reduce the manufcaturing cost Samsung incurs while it diverts its attention to planning a recovery pathway for its Chinese business. However, Samsung is yet to confirm if a deal is on the way. The company did acknowledge, though, that it has been considering introducing the ODM system not only in China but also in other countries when needed.

Soon after, the Note 9 went up for pre-order on JD.com. Unlike other Chinese companies who allow free reservations on the site for sale, you had to pay 99 Yuan (~$14) in order to pre-order the device. Turns out, not many are willing to shell out the pre-order deposit for the new Note 9 on JingDong.

There are currently four variants of the Galaxy Note 9 on JD.com available for pre-order: 6+128GB storage option in three colors (Black, Blue, Copper) and 8+512GB option in one color (black). So far, the listing has received less than 1300 pre-orders for the device on the site. Considering the usual demand for a flagship like the Note series, this is definitely a lukewarm response from Chinese customers. The Frost Blue color seems to be the most pre-ordered variant on the site with over 500 registrations.

Samsung has been struggling in China in the past few years and this is yet another example of the company’s flagships failing to garner enough attention from customers in China. The Galaxy Note 9 is one of the most powerful handsets of 2018, however, apart from its innovative S Pen, the phone doesn’t have much to distinguish itself from the competition. Even Samsung’s variable aperture tech is coming on the upcoming OPPO R17 Pro flagship which is going to be much cheaper at launch.

RELATED: Xiaomi or Samsung, which company is leading the Indian smartphone market?

Considering the hefty 6999 Yuan price tag for the Note 9, customers can go for a cheaper yet powerful option like the innovative full screen OPPO Find X (starts at 4999 Yuan ~$756) or the Huawei P20 Pro with triple cameras (starts at 4999 Yuan ~$756). Unless Samsung decides to slash down its price to somewhere near to its Chinese competitors, it will be tough for the Note 9 to do well in the highly competitive Chinese market.

The company may soon shut down one of its two smartphone factories established in China, according to the latest report from ETNews and The Investor. From what an anonymous company executive has just declared, the production in this facility, which is located in Tainjin, Northern China, has already been reduced. The Korean giant is expected to suspend its operation in the factory within a year before shutting it down forever. Identified as Tianjin Samsung Telecommunication, this manufacturing plant was established in 2001 and big profits came from its production.

The facility kept growing up until 2013 when it registered more than 15 trillion won sales, which roughly translates into $13.2 billion at the actual exchange rate. But after 2013, it started to decline with 11.41 trillion won (about $10 billion) in 2014 and just 6.93 trillion won ($6.1 billion) in 2015. Given this big decline, it is easy to understand the reasons why Samsung has decided to close it, even after seventeen years of activity. Currently, the company is not performing well in the Chinese market due to the strong presence of Chinese brands. At the moment China is dominated by Huawei, which has recently passed Apple and reached the second place in the global smartphones market.

Rising labor costs and the shift of Samsung’s manufacturing base to other Asian countries (such as Vietnam and India) should also have contributed to this hard decision. After shutting down this manufacturing plant, there will be only one Samsung smartphone factory left in China, which is based in Huizhou (south-eastern China).

What do you think about the future of the Korean giant in the Chinese market? Will it ever recover the lost ground or Huawei and other Chinese company will gain even more popularity?

The girl’s father claimed the Galaxy Note 4 smartphone he bought in August of the previous year from a retailer had an expanded battery which then exploded while being charged on the bedside table. Samsung’s China office reportedly offered the family £1,189 (10,000 RMB) to cover the girl’s medical bills. The last is yet to be heard of the incident as Feng Yue’s father has filed a civil suit against Samsung in the Xiqing District Court of Tianjin.

The lawsuit had as defendants Tianjin Samsung Communications Technology Co., battery maker Samsung Vision Limited and a distributor Guizhou Flerida Technology company as well as the third-party supplier from whom the ill-fated phone was purchased. The lawsuit seeks to get Samsung as well as the other three co-defendants to compensate the little Feng Yue for the disability caused by the incident. It also seeks to get the Korean tech giant and others to cover the cost of her treatment in its entirety. These are all summed up to about 1.6 million yuan (~$248,000).

Before now, Feng Lingling who is the father of the victim had tried to get Samsung to compensate her for the damages but Samsung had hinted that the battery which was inside the Galaxy Note 4 wasn’t manufactured by it. The Note 4 explosion was clearly traced to the battery. In this case, it may be a lengthy legal tussle for the family to get anything out of Samsung.

According to data compiled by Strategic Analytics, the Korean tech giant saw its share in China’s smartphone market slide to 0.8% in the fourth quarter of 2017 from a lofty of 20% share it commanded five years ago. The data also revealed Samsung shipped 9.8 million smartphones in China in Q4 2017 and this is noted to be the first time the Korean giant’s quarterly shipments fell below the 10 million-unit mark.

A breakdown of the statistics reveals that Sammy’s market share in China fell from 3.1% in the first quarter of 2017 to 2.7% in the second quarter and it went further south to 2% in the third quarters. For the entire 2017, the Korean vendor had a 2.1% share in China, which is just about one-fifth of the figures it posted in 2013. This year may not see an improvement despite the launch of the Galaxy S9 models as the company’s market share is expected to remain at 0.8% in Q1 2018. The hefty price tags of the models are likely going to discourage a lot of fans in China from picking up one. The midrange market has also slipped out of the grip of the Korean phone maker.

Related: Xiaomi & Samsung in Subtle War of Words Over Who Sold More Units in Q4 2017 in India

The same thing applies to India where the company also face stiff competition in the midrange segment from Chinese OEMs like Huawei, OPPO, Vivo and Xiaomi whose smartphones have equally high quality and are better priced than Samsung models. The company has been the top phone maker in India for six years but last year saw Xiaomi outperform the tech giant in the fourth quarter. Samsung share also fell from26.2% to 23.9%. Samsung still remains the largest smartphone maker globally but observers are of the opinion that the global market leader faces the prospects of a further drop in the Indian and Chinese market in the near future.

According to a recent market study carried out by Strategy Analytics, the South Korean held on to 12th spot in China in the fourth quarter of 2017. Currently, the only foreign company that has managed to get listed in the top 10 smartphone brands in China is Apple that is now holding on to 5th position after Huawei, OPPO, Vivo and Xiaomi. The research also reveals that Samsung’s market share has declined to 0.8 percent in the said quarter.

Between 2011 and 2013, Samsung was the number smartphone brand in China. However, local brands have managed to surpass Samsung’s popularity in the recent years. Analysts are of the view that some of the reasons that has led to declining of Samsung’s market share in China are its inability to meet the demands of consumers in China while local brands proactively launch cheaper smartphones, recalling of Galaxy Note 7 and the recent political tension between Seoul and Beijing.

On March 6, Samsung had introduced the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ smartphones in China. It has even signed up popular young actors from China, Zhu Yawen and Jing Boran to endorse the Galaxy S9 duo. The South Korean company is hoping to gain some market share through the arrival of S9 and S9+ in China.

The 64 GB and 128 GB Samsung Galaxy S9 models are respectively priced at 5,799 Yuan (~$922) and 6,099 Yuan (~$970). On the other side, the 64 GB, 128 GB and 256 GB Galaxy S9+ variants respectively cost 6,699 Yuan (~$1,065), 6,999 Yuan (~$1,113) and 7,599 Yuan (~$1,209). In order to attract Chinese customers, it comes with enhanced video, audio apps and personalized emojis to attract social media users in China.

A recent report had revealed that Samsung is working on improving its market share in China. In 2017, it had replaced local heads and operations were streamlined. The company also plans to concentrate more on targeting users who purchase high-end smartphones. However, it won’t be easy for Samsung to regain its popularity in China as Huawei, OPPO, Vivo, Xiaomi and OnePlus are all selling flagship phones with cheaper pricing.

At a shareholders meeting yesterday, DJ Koh who is Samsung’s chief of mobile division, apologized to shareholders for the company’s failure in the Chinese market. Samsung’s market share in China currently sits under 2% and none of its phones are on China’s best selling phones of 2017.

Samsung has made some changes which may help it turn things around. Local heads were replaced last year and operations are said to have been streamlined. It also plans to focus more on customers who want to buy high-end phones. It has also signed partnerships with popular Chinese companies like WeChat, Baidu, Alibaba, and Mobike among others.

There is no saying if these steps will turn their fortunes around. If Samsung is targeting the premium market, it will be going head on with brands like Huawei, Xiaomi, OPPO, Vivo, and OnePlus. Some of these brands also make phones for the mid-range categories and are also competitors in other key markets.

Recent research data shows Samsung ranked 9th in the third quarter with a 2% share but that is expected to drop to 1.6% by the end of the year. A previous market survey of the second quarter had revealed that the South Korean company’s market share has dropped to such an extent it is on the sixth position in the list of top smartphone brands in China.

Read More: Report: Samsung Still Struggling In China After Note 7 Debacle

The reason for the global tech giant’s decline is attributed to the new market trend in China which shows that customers prefer buying cheaper smartphones from local brands. It wasn’t always so, as Samsung was once a dominant force in the Chinese market. In 2015, Samsung’s China market share reached 20% but right now, we see the rise of cheap and premium-looking smartphones, some mid-range devices. The rise of Chinese OEMs like Huawei, Xiaomi, OPPO and Vivo is responsible for the decline of the Korean giant. The duo of Samsung and LG may further experience a decline in their market share unless they get more competitive against these Chinese firms.

This is said to have become worse since the Galaxy Note 7 explosion issue which happened last year. Samsung has successfully staged a strong rebound with the Galaxy S8 and S8+ and recently announced the Galaxy Note 8 in New York. Even though the Galaxy Note 8 is yet to go on sale, the reviews it has got shows it is a worthy replacement for the Galaxy Note 7.

The statistical report credited to be from the Korea International Trade Commission (KITA) showed that Samsung sold 48 million smartphones in China in the second quarter of this year which ended in June, as more customers seem to go for cheaper local brands over Samsung’s high-end devices. The company’s Q2 performance meant it ranked in the sixth position in China.

Samsung’s rival, Apple held onto the top spot with 171 million shipments and the tech giant is followed in quick succession by Huawei, OPPO, Vivo and Xiaomi respectively. Huawei was able to claim the second spot with 132 million units while OPPO came in in third with 124 million units shipped in Q2 2017. Vivo recorded 108 million smartphone sales to occupy the fourth spot and finally, Xiaomi shipped 68 million units in the quarter under review. The report attributed the rise of the Chinese smartphones to their moderate prices and high build quality which provided amazing value for money. About 63% of the smartphones sold in China in Q2 were said to be said to be low- and mid-range products with a price tag of less than 2,000 yuan (~US$305.60).

In addition, the report also revealed that about 63% of the smartphones sold in China in Q2 were low- and mid-range products with a price tag of less than 2,000 yuan (~US$305.60). Premium phones priced around 4,000 yuan or more only accounted for only 6.4 percent of the total second-quarter sales, with iPhones taking up a large chunk of that figure.

Read More: iPhone 10th Anniversary Edition Case Possibly Leaks Official Name

The report enjoined Samsung to ramp up efforts to restore customer confidence in its smartphones as only 7.2% of Samsung phone owners in China repurchased Samsung products in the second quarter. This way lower than 53.4% for Apple iPhones and 25-26% for Oppo and Vivo. Even though Samsung remains the world’s number 1 smartphone maker, it has to put in more efforts to regain customer confidence in its brand and establish a base of loyal customer again in the world’s second largest economy.
