Unisoc has quietly launched its new T9300 5G mobile chipset for smartphones. The company describes the chip as a high-performance 5G SoC designed to deliver enhanced video and gaming experiences. Continue reading ahead to learn more in detail about the new chipset.

Unisoc T9300 specifications

The Unisoc T9300 is designed as a high-performance 5G SoC aimed at strengthening both imaging and gaming experiences. Built on a 6nm process, it features an octa-core CPU with two Cortex A78 cores at 2.4GHz and six Cortex A55 cores at 2.2GHz.

Unisoc claims a notable efficiency improvement of around 38 percent compared to the previous generation. Graphics are handled by the Mali G57 dual-core GPU, and storage support includes LPDDR4X memory and UFS 2.2 flash. Benchmark scores reportedly reach around 550,000 on AnTuTu V10.

Connectivity receives a substantial boost with 3GPP Release 17 support, integration of 5G NR NTN satellite communication and 5G MBS broadcast. The chipset features AI-driven network management and improved power efficiency in typical 5G conditions. It supports SA and NSA modes, dual VoNR, VoWiFi and full multi-band compatibility from 2G to 5G.

The T9300 introduces the seventh-generation Vivimagic imaging engine with a quad-core ISP, support for up to 200-megapixel sensors, 32-megapixel at 25fps ZSL output and 20-megapixel dual camera configurations. It includes improved multi-frame and time domain noise reduction, upgraded 3A algorithms, and AI-backed night mode, along with refined portrait segmentation and HDR photography improvements.

Audio capabilities include advanced noise reduction, enhanced echo control, upgraded stereo playback and HiFi grade output powered by a dedicated DSP. Display support covers FHD+ at 144Hz, 1.5K at 90Hz, HDR10+ and Netflix certification, along with VRR and multiple eye protection modes.

The gaming experience is strengthened by the Unisoc Miracle Gaming engine, which focuses on frame stability, network optimisation and enhanced visual processing with AI codec support for better voice clarity in poor network conditions.

Unisoc has introduced its latest 5G chipset, the T8300, aimed at enhancing mobile performance with advanced AI capabilities. The Unisoc T8300 is built on TSMC’s 6nm process and features an octa-core CPU with a 2+6 configuration—two Cortex-A78 cores clocked at 2.2GHz for performance and six Cortex-A55 cores running at 2.0GHz for efficiency. This setup delivers a balance of power and energy efficiency, making the chipset well-suited for demanding applications. On the GPU side, it incorporates the Mali-G57, enhancing graphical performance for gaming and media consumption.

Benchmark results indicate that the Unisoc T8300 achieves an AnTuTu score exceeding 510,000, positioning it as a strong performer in its segment. Additionally, AI-based processing efficiency has improved by 28 percent, while overall performance has increased by 51 percent, enabling smoother multitasking and AI-driven tasks.

One of the highlights of the T8300 is its advanced imaging capabilities, powered by the 7th-generation Vivimagic engine. The chipset supports up to a 108-megapixel camera, allowing for detailed and high-quality photography. Additional improvements include real-time HDR processing and enhanced video recording, ensuring clearer and more dynamic visuals in various lighting conditions.

For gaming enthusiasts, Unisoc has incorporated its Miracle Gaming engine, designed to enhance performance stability and responsiveness. The chipset is claimed to improve frame rates and reduce latency, making it an ideal choice for mobile gaming. Performance metrics indicate an 80% boost in gaming efficiency and a 70% reduction in power consumption compared to previous models.

Unisoc has announced the successful upgrade of its 5G and 4G mobile platforms to Android 15. Unisoc has recently unveiled a new 5G-enabled SoC called the Unisoc T760 for budget-range devices.

Unisoc T760 specs:

The T760 uses a 6nm EUV manufacturing process, featuring an octa-core CPU with four Cortex-A76 cores for performance and four Cortex-A55 cores for efficiency. An ARM Mali-G57 MC4 GPU supports smooth graphics and gaming.

The T760 includes a Neural Processing Unit (NPU) with 3.2 TOPS processing power, enhancing AI features like facial recognition and camera functions. Unisoc reports an average AnTuTu V10 score of 510,000.

The T760 supports displays up to Full HD+ resolution at a 120Hz refresh rate and QHD+ displays at 60Hz. Camera support includes sensors up to 64MP and quad-camera setups, enhanced by Unisoc’s Vivimagic 6.0 imaging engine and Acutelogic 3A technology for better photo and video quality.

Battery efficiency is a key feature, with Unisoc claiming a 37% reduction in power consumption during 5G data use and an 18% reduction in 5G standby, leading to longer battery life.

Connectivity options for the T760 include support for NSA/SA 5G networks, GSM, WCDMA, TDD-LTE, FDD-LTE, and advanced navigation systems like GPS, Glonass, Beidou, and Galileo. It also offers Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5.0, FM radio support, and memory configurations up to 32GB of LPDDR4X RAM with storage options of EMMC 5.1 and UFS 3.1.

Availability

Unisoc’s new chipset will power upcoming budget smartphones in India, providing more options for consumers looking for cost-effective 5G devices. Chinese smartphone giants Xiaomi and Unisoc are reportedly making strides towards developing their own 4nm mobile processors, potentially reducing reliance on foreign chipmakers like Qualcomm and MediaTek. According to Liberty Times and Commercial Times, both Xiaomi and Unisoc have successfully completed the “tape-out” process for their domestic 4nm chips. This signifies a significant milestone in the development cycle, where the design is finalized and sent to a foundry for manufacturing. However, the reports clarify that these chips utilize foreign intellectual property (IP) cores from ARM and IMG.

Xiaomi has emerged as a major force in smartphone production, ranking third globally behind Apple and Samsung in Q1 2024. Their ambitions extend beyond phones, with rumors suggesting a competitive 4nm chip to rival Huawei’s Kirin 9000s, potentially launching later this year.

The Kirin chip is based on a 7nm process by SMIC, another major Chinese chipmaker. Xiaomi’s past collaborations with Qualcomm position them well for long-term success in the chip development arena.

On the other hand, Unisoc, a Shanghai-based fabless chip designer specializing in mobile communication and connectivity technologies, is also reportedly on the 4nm bandwagon. Their chip is said to have already completed the tape-out stage and achieved performance comparable to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888.

However, analysts caution that widespread adoption of domestically produced 4nm SoCs in Chinese smartphones might not happen until 2026. Currently, established players like MediaTek and Qualcomm hold a dominant position in the Chinese market.

This advancement may mark a pivotal moment for China’s semiconductor industry. Led by Huawei, and now with Xiaomi and Unisoc also entering the arena, domestic chipmakers are poised to potentially challenge international competitors. Based on the 12nm process technology, the UNISOC 786, adopts a dual high-performance big core Arm Cortex-A75 at 1.6GHz and six energy-efficient cores Cortex-A55 at 1.6GHz, and is equipped with a Mali G57 GPU core. The processor also supports dual-band Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 5.0, GNSS positioning services, USB Hub and other features.

It supports LPDDR4x memory and provides UFS 2.2 and eMMC5.1 storage interfaces, and FHD+ display output. The UNISOC 7861 processor currently supports the Android 12 Go system and Android 14 system optimized for small memory (1GB + 8GB).

If you’ve used an Android smartphone before, high chances are that your smartphone is either powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon or MediaTek Dimensity processor. But recently, there’s a third player slowing growing into the smartphone space, and their name is UNISOC, with their UNISOC 5G SoC (System-on-a-Chip) for Android smartphones.

UNISOC, formerly known as Spreadtrum, is a Chinese fabless semiconductor company headquartered in Shanghai which produces chipsets for Android smartphones. UNISOC chipsets have passed the validation of more than 260 carriers from 133 countries worldwide. Some of their high-profile customers for purchasing their processors include HONOR, realme, vivo, Samsung, Motorola, Hisense and ZTE for their smartphones.

Out of their entire lineup currently available, in this article, we’ll be comparing whether UNISOC’s four 5G smartphone processors can compete with the big boys in the market, which are known as MediaTek and Qualcomm respectively. 

UNISOC has four notable 5G smartphone processors, which are the UNISOC T750, T760, T770, and T820. One of these 4 processors can be listed as a Tier C performing processors, whereas the other remaining 3 can be viewed as C+ performing processors.

Tier C: Low Performance Processors

Starting off with the only Tier C processor from UNISOC is the UNISOC T750. It comes with 5G connectivity,  2 ARM Cortex A76 CPU performance cores and 6 ARM Cortex A55 CPU efficiency cores. The GPU under the hood is the ARM Mali-G57 MP2 which is equivalent in performance to the ARM Mali G57 MC2, and the Qualcomm Adreno 618. 

As seen above, the UNISOC T750 is approximately equivalent to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 found on the Samsung Galaxy A71 (2019) or the MediaTek Dimensity 6080 found on devices like the Redmi Note 13 5G and Redmi Note 11S 5G. However, manufactured on the newer TSMC 6nm process, the UNISOC T750 has several benefits over the Snapdragon such as better performance and better power efficiency.

The UNISOC T750 was released in May 2023 and is expected to arrive in Android devices by 2023 Q4.

Tier C+: Better Low Performance Processors

Next are the 3 Tier C+ processors from UNISOC, which are respectively the UNISOC T760, T770, and T820. All 3 feature the same CPU core configuration which 4 ARM Cortex A76 CPU performance cores, and 4 ARM Cortex A55 CPU efficiency cores, which is actually the same core configuration as the flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 mobile processor found on the OnePlus 7 Pro, and Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro (Redmi K20 Pro). 

However, where these 3 UNISOC processors differ from the Snapdragon 855 is their GPU. Powering the T760, T770 and T820 is the ARM Mali G57 MP4 GPU, which is much behind the Adreno 640 on the Snapdragon 855, and closer to the Adreno 620 on the Snapdragon 765. Still the 4+4 CPU configuration allows the UNISOC processors to be ahead of its competitors by providing a flagship-type CPU core configuration at an affordable price despite the underpowered GPU.

The UNISOC T760, T770 and T820 can be found in devices like the Hisense P50 5G, ZTE Blade A73 5G, and the recently released ZTE Nubia Neo 5G, the company’s budget gaming smartphone from Nubia.

In conclusion, UNISOC processors are not useless, and in fact, they are quite underrated at the price that they are offered. UNISOC’s small portfolio of 5G smartphone processors is not competitive with the high-end processors from MediaTek and Qualcomm. However, at an affordable price, the UNISOC processors still have a place for “better than expected” performance in low-end Android smartphones.

In the recently released market data for the second quarter of 2023 by Counterpoint Research, MediaTek maintained its dominant position in the global smartphone Application Processor (AP) market share. This marked the 12th consecutive quarter of MediaTek’s leadership in this sector.

Analyzing the Q2 2023 Smartphone AP Processor Shares of Leading Manufacturers

During Q2 2023, MediaTek commanded the largest share with 30%, closely followed by Qualcomm at 29%. Apple secured a substantial portion of the market with a 19% share, while UNISOC held a notable 15% share. In contrast, Samsung accounted for 7% of the market, reflecting the competitive landscape and the ongoing dynamics within the smartphone AP market.

MediaTek’s continued success can be attributed to their strategic moves in the market. They experienced a slight increase in shipments in Q2 2023, primarily driven by their strong presence in the mid-low-end market. MediaTek introduced new models, such as the Dimensity 6000 and Dimensity 7000 series, along with the high-end Dimensity 9200 Plus, consolidating their position across various price segments.

Qualcomm also saw growth in shipments during the same quarter, thanks to the adoption of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor by major players like Samsung and Chinese manufacturers. The release of Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 5 series played a significant role in boosting Qualcomm’s market presence. Furthermore, Qualcomm’s updates to its Snapdragon 7 Gen 1, Snapdragon 6 Gen 1, and Snapdragon 4 Gen 1 series contributed to their market share recovery.

Samsung, too, experienced an increase in AP shipments in Q2 2023, driven by the introduction of the Exynos 1330 and 1380 processors. These chips found success in both the low-end and mid-high-end smartphone markets. However, Apple faced a decline in sales during this period, largely due to seasonal factors.

UNISOC, after a sluggish performance in the first quarter, witnessed an uptick in shipments during Q2 2023. As entry-level 5G smartphones continue to gain popularity in regions like Europe, UNISOC is poised to capture a larger market share in the latter half of 2023.

When we think of mobile processors, Qualcomm is often the first company that comes to mind. This is because their chips are widely used in high-end and mid-range devices. However, it may come as a surprise to many that MediaTek, a Taiwanese manufacturer, is actually the world’s top-selling chip producer, surpassing even Qualcomm. With a wide range of chips produced for all kinds of devices, MediaTek has secured a significant market share. Following in their footsteps, Chinese company Unisoc is also adopting a similar strategy to expand their market share, particularly in the low-end smartphone chip market. Here are the details…

At Unisoc’s Shanghai showroom, China’s chip ambitions remain strong in the mature technology arena

Chinese chip firm Unisoc is expanding its market share in low-end smartphone chips, The company’s success lies in its focus on less advanced chips, allowing it to remain relatively unscathed by US sanctions to date. In fact, Unisoc’s share of the global smartphone chip market was 10% in Q3 2022, according to market research firm Counterpoint, ahead of Samsung Electronics.

Unisoc’s success with 5G chips is notable, including the launch of the T820 chip in November 2022 and the subsequent launch of a 5G communication solution at the Mobile World Conference in Barcelona in March 2023. Unisoc’s T820 chip was made possible by a team of more than 200 engineers who slept at the office for nearly three months during Covid lockdowns last year.

Unisoc has not elaborated on plans for mass production of the chip, but the company has launched three 5G chips using a 6-nanometre extreme ultraviolet lithography process, with the other two chips achieving mass production and being adopted by low-end smartphone brands in China. Despite Unisoc’s success, the company remains exposed to US sanctions because China still lacks advanced fabrication plants of its own.

For example, Huawei’s chip design unit, HiSilicon, was hobbled by US trade sanctions on exports of advanced chips, which required Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co to stop doing business with it. Unisoc has ramped up efforts to diversify its operations, extending the application of 5G chips beyond consumer electronic products to industrial solutions such as medical services, logistics, electricity, and mining, among others. The company’s shipments of 5G Internet of Things (IoT) chips and modules also increased 146% last year.

Unisoc is conducting a new 10 billion yuan (US$1.45 billion) fundraising round, according to Reuters, and its business covers more than 133 countries, with 80% of its products sold to overseas markets. Unisoc’s success underscores the life in the domestic semiconductor industry, particularly the section that focuses on more mature chip technologies.

According to China’s chip design industry association, the country had 3,243 chip design firms by the end of 2022, with their combined sales up 16% from a year ago. While risks remain, Unisoc is a shining example of how Chinese semiconductor companies can survive and even thrive under US trade sanctions.

Acer is one of the many companies that tried selling smartphones but did not succeed. The company had exited the market about half a decade ago. Hence, it is surprising to learn that a new Acer-branded phone is available for purchase in Mexico.

According to PlayfulDroid, a new Acer smartphone dubbed Sospiro A60 is up for sale in Mexico. It is being sold by carrier Telcel for MXN 1,599 ($80). The device looks like an ODM product.

The handset comes in a single black color option with green accents. It sure is a head-turner with this color combination. But unfortunately, the specs are entry-level, which is fine for the asking price.

The phone sports a 6-inch display (LCD) with a resolution of 1440 x 720 pixels (HD+) and an 18:9 aspect ratio. It is powered by a Unisoc SC7731E chipset paired with 2GB RAM and 32GB internal storage. It boots Android 11 Go Edition.

There’s an 8MP (wide) + 2MP (depth) dual-camera system on the rear and another 8MP front-facing camera. LED flashlights are present on both sides.

Other features include a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor, a MicroSD card slot (up to 64GB), a 3.5mm headphone jack, a MicroUSB port, single-band WiFi, Bluetooth 4.2, and a 3,000mAh battery.

Last but not least, the Acer Sospiro A60 measures 162 x 77 x 9.3mm in dimensions and weighs 195g.

Samsung launched the Galaxy Tab A7 in the second half of 2020. The Galaxy Tab A8 succeeded it at the end of 2021. Almost two years after its debut, the company is now gearing up to re-release the tablet with a change. Let’s take a look at this upcoming variant.

In early May, SamMobile reported that Samsung is planning to launch many tablets. One of them was the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite 2022 Edition, which went official a few days later.

The publication had mentioned a tablet with model number SM-T503 among others. According to the retail sources of GizPie, this model number belongs to the Galaxy Tab A7 2022 Edition.

Apart from the branding, the sources have also revealed the chipset. Unlike the original which had a Qualcomm Snapdragon 662 SoC, the 2022 Edition will be powered by a Unisoc T618 chip.

Just like the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite refresh, there seems to be only one memory configuration for the Galaxy Tab A7 revival. The table is expected to arrive with 3GB RAM and 32GB storage.

Talking about other features, the forthcoming Samsung tablet is said to retain the same specs as the original model. Hence, it will likely arrive with a 10.4-inch display (TFT LCD) sporting a resolution of 2000 x 1200 pixels, quad speakers, 3.5mm headphone jack, MicroSD card slot, 8MP rear camera, 5MP front-facing camera, 7,040mAh battery, and 15W fast charging support.

There is a wide range of Realme Narzo phones available in the market and it appears that a new smartphone, dubbed Realme Narzo 50i Prime, will soon make entry into the series.

MySmartPrice, citing industry sources, has reported that Realme is gearing up to launch the Realme Narzo 50i Prime in India in June. The exact date is not revealed yet. It is expected that the company will confirm it a week before the launch.

The publications revealed that the smartphone will be available in two color options- Mint Green and Dark Blue. It also shed some light on the storage configuration of the smartphone. As per the publication, the Realme Narzo 50i Prime will come in 2 storage variants- 3GB RAM 32GB storage, and 4GB RAM 64GB storage. Judging from RAM and Storage, the Realme Narzo 50i Prime appears to be an entry-level smartphone. It is likely to be priced under Rs. 10,000 ($130)

Unisoc, a China-based chip manufacturer, has been able to take advantage of the opportunity presented by the global chip shortage and is now aiming to replace MediaTek in the budget smartphones segment as the Taiwan-based company is focusing on capturing the premium market.

With such a rise, the company also goes through stricter scrutiny. While some of the company’s older chips were marked as a threat vector, now another vulnerability has been found that explicitly affects a Unisoc chip found in three Motorola devices.

According to the report from Checkpoint Research, the Unisoc Tiger T700 chip, which powers the Motorola Moto G20, E30, and E40 smartphones, has been found to have a vulnerability when the cellular modem attempts to connect to an LTE network.

It basically omits the check to make sure that the modem’s connection handler is reading a valid IMSI or similar subscriber ID. When the handler reads a zero-digit field, a stack overflow occurs which can be exploited for a denial of service attack or for remote code execution, blocking the user from the LTE network.

Checkpoint Research notified Unisoc about this last month and the company evaluated it to be of critical risk with a 9.4 out of 10 ratings and promptly patched the issue. Google may pass the patch onto users soon, likely with the new Android security bulletin.

There haven’t been any reports of this flaw getting exploited but this is still a large problem, especially because most Unisoc processors are used in budget smartphones that rarely get new software updates.

China-based semiconductor firm Unisoc has recently come to prominence with multiple major manufacturers using its SoCs in their budget range devices. Now, Check Point Research has revealed that the Unisoc smartphone chips have a critical security vulnerability.

According to the firm, The issue exists in the modem firmware and affects 4G and 5G Unisoc chipsets. The issue, tracked as CVE-2022-20210, was discovered while scanning Non-Access Stratum (NAS) message handlers. This vulnerability could be exploited to neutralize or block the cellular communication capabilities of the device.

Slava Makkaveev,  Reverse Engineering and Security Research attorney at Check Point Software said “An attacker could have used a radio station to send a malformed packet that would reset the modem, depriving the user of the possibility of communication. Left unpatched, cellular communication can be blocked by an attacker.”

The vulnerability was detected on a Motorola Moto G20 running the Unisoc T700 chipset and Android January 2022 security patch. The vulnerability, however, exists on other devices using Unisoc chipsets too. Check Point Research disclosed its findings to Unisoc in May. The China-based chipmaker acknowledged the vulnerability upon the receipt of disclosure and issued a patch.

Makkaveev also stated that “There is nothing for Android users to do right now, though we strongly recommend applying a patch that will be released by Google in their upcoming Android Security Bulletin.” So, it is advisable to update your Unisoc SoC smartphones to the latest software version when the next patch arrives.

As one of the world’s largest smartphone markets, China with its population of over 1 billion reflects several of the future trends that we may see in the smartphone industry, with one of them being the brand of the SoC (System on a Chip) used in our smartphones.

As we are almost halfway into 2022, data analytics firm, CINNO Research, has recently published a report on the Top 5 Smartphone SoC Vendors in the China market for Q1 2022, and it seems that MediaTek is the popular SoC brand used in smartphones for the quarter.

According to the report (via ITHome), smartphone SoC shipments in Q1 2022 were 74.39 million units, down 14.4% year-on-year, and down 0.7% quarter-on-quarter. And the top 5 vendors for the smartphone SoC vendors are MediaTek in the first place, Qualcomm in second, Apple in third, with Huawei’s HiSilicon and UNISOC in fourth and fifth respectively.

Let’s start from top to bottom, MediaTek saw 30.7 million smartphone chipsets shipped out in Q1 2022, which was higher than its 25 million shipments from last quarter, and 30.1 million shipments from Q1 2022. The rise in smartphone SoC shipments MediaTek can be mainly attributed to the semiconductor firm’s strategy and chipset catalogue that it had offered in the last 6 months, which included the brand’s popular Dimensity 920 5G chipset found on the Redmi Note 11 Pro+, Realme 9 Pro+ and Xiaomi 11i Hypercharge.

For Qualcomm, the brand remained relatively stable at second with 26.7 million smartphone SoC shipments in Q1 2022, higher than the 23.6 million figure from last quarter, but lower than the 27.9 million shipments from Q1 of last year. Coupled with the ongoing chip shortage, Qualcomm had earlier announced that it will gradually shift its focus to flagship chipsets instead of entry-level and mid-range chipsets due to flagship chipsets providing higher profit margins. However, the one caveat of this strategy is losing market share in mid-range and entry-level markets, which leads to lower shipments overall but higher revenues for the company.

Apple on the other hand, had only shipped 12 million smartphone SoCs in Q1 2022, down 15.8% from its 18.4 million figure from Q4 2021. As the iPhone nears the end of its release cycle, shipments are also expected to go down as well, because consumers are already expecting a new iPhone release soon, and therefore would hold off buying the current model and wait for the next iteration instead.

Huawei’s HiSilicon continues its gradual exit from the China smartphone SoC market as the firm had only shipped out 2.5 million units this quarter, down from 13.8 million in Q1 2021. As stocks for HiSilicon Kirin are not replenished due to the still ongoing supply sanctions against the company, the brand is expected to drop out of the top 5 as late as next year or as soon as the next quarter.

Squeezing just into the Top 5 is the rapidly growing UNISOC semiconductor company. UNISOC saw shipments of 1.9 million smartphones SoCs in Q1 2022, up 1760% from 0.1 million in Q1 2021. The main cause for the exponential growth behind UNISOC is the entry-level smartphone market. As the bigger players like Qualcomm and Apple’s main focus area is in the high-end, UNISOC aims to tackle the low end with its relatively much more affordable chipsets sold off to Realme, Motorola and Samsung to sell in their sub 100 dollar device market.

A mobile security solutions firm Kryptowire has identified some serious security and privacy vulnerabilities in smartphones powered by UNISOC SC9863A chips and has alerted owners of such smartphones as such. Kryptowire says that the specified UNISOC SoC has a flaw that could be exploited by hackers to get access to user data and functionality of the mobile device.

The UNISOC SC986 3A chipset is quite prevalent in several of the budget brands including Nokia and it is unclear how this reported flaw will affect the standing of the chipmaker. Some of the stated consequences of the vulnerabilities include gaining access to call records, text messages, contacts, video records, and other privacy data that could hurt the user when hackers put such to use. It is even possible to remotely use the device’s rear camera or remotely operate the device.

As per the details put out by Kryptowire, it is said that the firm had reported the issue to UNISOC since December 2021, but we are yet to get any update from the company on the issue. Device manufacturers and mobile carrier networks have also been notified of the security vulnerability of the UNISOC SC9863A chipset. We expect to see upgrades rolled out by different OEMs sporting the budget UNISOC chipset to take care of the highlighted vulnerabilities. This would be in collaboration with the chipmaker, UNISOC.

Earlier it was announced that MediaTek had already led the Android smartphone SoC market in 2021 with a 46% share, exceeding its rival Qualcomm, which had a 35% share in the market in 2021. One might think this spell the end of Qualcomm’s dominance in the Android smartphone space. 

However, a follow-up report to the research has been published by Counterpoint Research. The report details the price brackets where Qualcomm, MediaTek, Exynos, HiSilicon and UNISOC are leading in the race for the Android chip supplier with the largest market share.

A closer examination of the report reveals that most of the market share growth for MediaTek in 2021 came from the low-mid tier wholesale price segment (sub-$299), driven by strong demand for the Dimensity 700, 800 and Helio series chipsets. Qualcomm on the other hand dominated the mid-range and premium flagship market with around 50% market share across all price brackets above $300, except for the $700-$799 price bracket, in which Samsung had a lead with 46% market share in the bracket.

But the question remains, why has Qualcomm shifted away from the low-end markets and how did MediaTek manage to win the low-end market after Qualcomm’s gradual exit?

The report mentions that the reason behind these changes of trends in the market is because of the global chip shortage. With Qualcomm unable to secure its chip supply from both TSMC and Samsung, the company instead prioritized focus on ramping up supply for its 700 and 800 series Snapdragon chipsets, driving higher revenue and profitability. 

However, with Qualcomm not providing much value-to-money in its 400 and 600 series Snapdragon chipsets in 2021, phone manufacturers decided to switch over to its competitor, MediaTek instead for their lower-end budget devices. MediaTek managed to put out capable and affordable 5G chipsets to the market in 2021 with their Dimensity 700 to 1200 series, which could provide performance on par and sometimes exceed competing processors in the same price bracket. And with the reveal of its Dimensity 8000 and 9000 series chipsets in 2022, it is expected that MediaTek could take the stake of the higher-end premium Android market as well in this coming year.

The report also shares some details about Samsung’s Exynos, Huawei’s HiSilicon Kirin and UNISOC chipsets in the industry in 2021. Besides the Samsung Galaxy S21 series equipped with Exynos, most of Samsung’s A, M and F series of smartphones were not equipped with Exynos. In the low-mid segment ($100-$299), its share decreased from 17% to 7%, and in the mid-high segment, its share decreased from 13% in 2020 to 6% in 2021.

UNISOC showed exciting growth in 2021 in smartphones priced less than $200. In 2020, UNISOC chipsets only catered to phones priced under $100. However, in 2021, realme, Motorola and Samsung have launched phones with the Tiger series SoC, citing better performance in the chipsets compared to its similarly priced competitors in the market.

Last but not least, HiSilicon’s SoCs had a 16% share in phones costing $500 and above in 2021, which was a decline from the 30% share in the previous year, due to the US trade ban. It is running on the inventory it added before the ban. By the end of 2022, HiSilicon’s market share is expected to continue to drop as its inventory gets depleted. Huawei has already started using Qualcomm SoCs in its new launches, but they are limited to 4G.

While MediaTek maintained its lead, Qualcomm recorded 33% YoY growth in the global smartphone AP (Application Processor) / SoC (System on Chip) market in 2021. The market grew 5% YoY in Q4 2021 overall, with almost half of the SoC shipments being 5G smartphone SoC shipments, the latest Counterpoint figures show.

MediaTek led the smartphone SoC market in Q4 2021 with a 33% share. But its shipments declined due to inventory correction. Still, the company is expected to see growth in its revenues in the first quarter of 2022 driven by the Dimensity 9000 chipset. Lower seasonal demand will be offset by higher 5G penetration.

Meanwhile, Qualcomm recorded a strong quarter, growing 18% QoQ in the fourth quarter of last year despite component shortages and inadequate foundry capacities. The chipmaker was also able to prioritize high-end Snapdragon processor sales, which come with higher profitability. It was also able to increase supplies from its major foundry partners by dual-sourcing orders.

Apple stood third in the smartphone SoC market in the fourth quarter of 2021 with a 21% share, with shipments driven by iPhone 13 launch and festive season demand.

UNISOC recorded growth this year and reached an 11% share in Q4 2021, with shipments more than doubling in 2021. It has expanded its customer base and currently supplies to companies like HONOR, realme, Motorola, ZTE, Transsion, and Samsung.

Samsung dropped to fifth place while Hilisilicon saw its market share drop to just 1% as its inventory of Kirin SoCs ran out.

A couple of years back, circa 2017, MediaTek‘s chipsets were only fit for use on budget phones. The company could only manage to grab some shares in the midrange segment while its flagship Helio X30 processors were only utilized by Meizu on the Meizu Pro 7 High Edition which, unfortunately, couldn’t fly. The company went back to the drawing board and upped its game and today, it is a different story. MediaTek is now solidly rooted in the midrange and flagship segment and is apparently slowly edging Qualcomm out of the top seat. In China, the story is no different. Data released by Chinese research firm CINNO Research detailed the SoC sales ranking in the Chinese smartphone market in 2021. According to the published data, the top five on the list are MediaTek, Qualcomm, Apple, HiSilicon, and Unisoc.

Among them, MediaTek shipped 110 million units in 2021 as against 77 .4 million units shipped in 2020. This represents a year-on-year increase of 42.5%. Although Qualcomm surpassed its shipment for 2020 by 24.2%, its total estimate of 106 million units fell short of MediaTek’s estimate.

Apple shipped an estimated 50.4 million units in the year under review, ranking third in the Chinese market, with a year-on-year increase of 38.8%.

It is no surprise that Huawei’s Hisilicon, still stunted by the US ban only managed a total shipment of 30.2 million units which represents a year-on-year decrease of 68.6%. It is noteworthy that Huawei is the only company among the top 5 that recorded a decrease in its shipment YoY.

The top 5 is completed by Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturer Unisoc with a total shipment of 8.8 million units which is a staggering 10,312.7% increase over its 2020 shipments.

Leading tech research group, Counterpoint Research has released its third quarterly report of shipments and the numbers show that Mediatek led the systems-on-chip shipments. The data indicated a growing gap between Mediatek and Qualcomm in SoC shipments in the third quarter of the year 2021. Unisoc followed the ranking of chipmakers ahead of Samsung. The rise of Mediatek is corresponding to a seemingly steady decline of HiSilicon which now holds about 2% of the market from its lofty heights.

The Counterpoint results indicate a strong performance of Mediatek in the shipments of in-demand 4G chipsets which has seen it garner a massive 40% of the shipments. While some of the chipmakers continue to groan in their inability to meet the growing demand for the 5G chips, the Taiwanese company continues to surge in the numbers. Qualcomm is still the leader in the 5G segment of the market in terms of shipments.

The US company, even with the uncertainty and supply chain difficulties, still retained a commanding 62% of the 5G chips market, mainly driven by its ability to have multiple contractors for the manufacture of important SoCs under its 5G lineup. Qualcomm also enjoyed a surge in its 5G chips shipment numbers due to the massive demand for the iPhone 13 back in September when it was launched. Of course, the iPhone 13 series are powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon chipsets.

Another chipmaker that had a strong Q3 2021 performance was Unisoc, which achieved a double-digit market share and overtook Samsung to the 3rd position. Its overall performance has seen the company having a third consecutive quarter growth. This was mainly driven by its ability to secure partnerships with several phone brands and its snapping of the supply of components to Honor at the expense of HiSilicon.

The year 2021 is about to end and Samsung is all set to introduce new smartphones and tablets for 2022. We have been hearing more about these upcoming devices for the past few days. A new report has now even revealed the chipsets powering these forthcoming products.

According to a report by The Elec, Samsung is planning to launch a total of 64 smartphones and tablets. Out of these, 31 models will use Qualcomm chips, new Exynos SoCs co-developed by Samsung and AMD will power 20 models, MediaTek chipsets will be used in 14 models, and there will be 3 models with UNISOC chipsets.

Further, the Galaxy S22 FE is said to exclusively use Exynos silicon and it will enter mass production in Q3 2022. On the other hand, the Galaxy S21 FE will be powered by both Qualcomm and Exynos SoCs.

The Galaxy Z Fold4 and the Galaxy Flip4 will solely come with a Qualcomm chip, while Galaxy Tab S8, Galaxy Tab S8+, and Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra will be driven exclusively by an Exynos chipset.

Interestingly, the Galaxy A53 will switch to Exynos from Qualcomm. Similarly, Galaxy A33 will transition from MediaTek to Exynos. Finally, the Galaxy A73 will be powered by a Qualcomm silicon, Snapdragon 778G to be precise.

Having said that, since the global semiconductor shortage is still prevailing, the above-mentioned details are subject to change.

A new report has revealed the shipments of mobile phone processors in the Chinese market for the month of September as well as the third quarter of 2021, with MediaTek seeing a strong performance in the region.

Top 5 Smartphone chipmakers in China – September 2021

According to a report by CINNO on total chip shipments in September 2021, Qualcomm came in at the top with 8.6 million units sold with an amazing increase of 59.2% compared to September of last year. The chipmaker was however down by 18.5% when compared to its sales of august. MediaTek saw lackluster results in September as their sales went down 17.5% compared to August and 2.8% in comparison with September 2020.

With its September release, Apple saw robust demand for the iPhone 13 series. This meant that its A-series chips also saw a rise, with shipments increasing by 32.5% quarter-on-quarter and 43.5% year-on-year. This major release has been attributed as the main factor in the decline of Android-based SoC sales in China for the month of September.

Huawei’s HiSilicon suffered a 27.7% decrease in its September sales compared to August and 74.8% in comparison with September 2020. UNISOC also experienced a decrease in its September sales numbers by 19.1% but soared an astounding 10291.3% in contrast to September 2020.

Top 5 Smartphone chipmakers in China – Q3 2021

The CINNO report also analyzed the performance of SoC makers for the third quarter of 2021 with MediaTek matching Qualcomm in sales volume with 28.8 million units shipped, showing a Quarterly Growth of 9.3% in Q3 2021 and a 24.6% growth compared to Q3 of last year. On the other hand, Qualcomm secured the second position with 9% quarterly growth in Q3 2021.

Apple shipments declined by 10.5% quarter-on-quarter with 9.4 million A-series chips shipped, but still showed a steady increase of 15% in shipments when compared to 2020. Huawei HiSilicon saw an overall drop in shipments in Q3, dropping by 22.5% (5.8 million shipped) compared to Q2 2021 (7.5 million shipped). The chipmaker saw a drop of a staggering 76.5% when compared to last year (24.8 million).

The report added that UNISOC witnessed an explosive 14726.1% growth year-on-year compared to Q3 of 2020. Now, the company holds the fifth position in the Chinese smartphone SoC market. UNISOC achieved a 96% growth in Q3 2021 compared to the second quarter, shipping around 4.1 million units. The company also managed to maintain robust sales with its major customers, which included Honor, Nokia, China Telecom, and more. It’s most popular SoC being the UNISOC Tiger T610 which powers the Honor Play 5T and Honor Play 20.

The Galaxy Tab A8 (2021) will have a 10.5-inch TFT WUXGA (1920 x 1200) display according to OnLeaks who has partnered with 91Mobiles once again for this leak. We are surprised Samsung isn’t using the same 10.4-inch screen that shipped with the Galaxy Tab A7 2020.

Earlier reports have said the tablet will be powered by a Snapdragon processor like its predecessor but this new leak says otherwise. The Galaxy Tab A8 (2021) will be powered by Unisoc’s Tiger T618 chipset, the same one that is inside the HTC A100 tablet that launched in Russia a few weeks ago.

Samsung will offer the tablet in different configurations depending on the market. Some will have 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage while others will have 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage or 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. While not stated, the tablet should have a MicroSD card slot for storage expansion.

The source says the tablet will have a 5MP front-facing camera and an 8MP camera on the rear. The battery capacity is 7040mAh, unchanged from the Galaxy Tab A7 2020. Last year’s model has support for 15W charging and that will likely be carried over to the Galaxy Tab A8 2021. There is also a mention of a fingerprint scanner on the side which seems unlikely for a budget tablet.

When it launches, the tablet will be available in gold, silver, and gray. It is also expected to launch in WiFi-only and LTE variants.

After taking a break from the smartphone market due to its financial struggles, LeTV (formerly LeEco) is back, and today, it has announced its first smartphone, the LeTV S1. What is special about the new phone is that it comes with Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) out of the box!

LeTV says that the decision to use HMS stems from its decision to be open to all ecosystems. So alongside its own services, it is also going with Huawei’s own services. Users who purchase the LeTV S1 will be able to use the phone with products under Huawei’s ecosystem. LeTV is also building a connected platform for its phones, TVs, and other products. Once it is announced, users will also be able to use their LeTV phones to interact with other LeTV products on the platform.

The LeTV S1 not only has HMS Core powering it but its hardware is also provided by Chinese suppliers. For instance, the processor is the Tiger T7510 processor which is from the Chinese semiconductor company, Unisoc. LeTV also said the display and memory are from Chinese companies.

The full specification sheet of the phone wasn’t revealed by the manufacturer but it has been reported that it has an HD+ display with a waterdrop notch for the front-facing camera and there is a 4900mAh battery under the hood. The poster also shows that there are three cameras on the back of the phone along with a fingerprint scanner.

LeTV says the new 5G smartphone is targeted at drivers who work for ride-sharing platforms and delivery services as well as older citizens. It also revealed that its high-end smartphone which it briefly revealed at its conference in May is still in development and will be announced next year.

The LeTV S1 will be available for purchase next month via the LeMall online store. Its full specifications and price should be revealed by then.

Motorola is reportedly gearing up to launch two new phones such as Moto G Pure and Moto E40. Earlier this week, well-known tipster Steve Hemmerstoffer shared an official render of the Moto G Pure. Now, reputed tipster Evan Blass shared a new render of the smartphone. At the same time, tipster Sudhanshu Ambhore has also shared new renders of the upcoming Moto E40 handset.

Moto G Pure

The new render of the Moto G Pure is equipped with a teardrop notch display with a fairly thick chin. The back panel of the device has a vertical dual-camera setup. The Motorola batwing available on the backside of the phone may function as a fingerprint scanner. The right edge of the phone features a volume rocker and a power key.

The previously seen images of the Moto G Pure show that it is equipped with a USB-C port and a 3.5mm audio jack. It is speculated to arrive in two colors such as Electric Graphite (shown above) and Lagoon Green. It is expected to arrive with specs like a 6.5-inch AMOLED display, Helio G25 or G35 chip, 3 GB of RAM, 32 GB of storage, 48-megapixel + 2-megapixel (depth) dual-camera system, a 5-megapixel front camera, and a 4,000mAh battery with 10W charging support.

Moto E40

The fresh renders of the Moto E40. It is expected to come with a 6.5-inch IPS LCD HD+ 90Hz display, Unisoc T700 chipset, 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of storage, Android 11 Go edition, and a 4,000mAh battery with 10W charging.

The E40 has an 8-megapixel front camera and a 48-megapixel + 2-megapixel (macro) + 2-megapixel (depth) triple camera unit. The handset offers other specs like a fingerprint scanner, a 3.5mm audio jack, a USB-C port, a Google Assistant button, IP52 rating, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, and GPS. It measures 165.08 x 75.64 x 9.14mm and weighs 198 grams. It is likely to cost under €200

The Moto E series will be getting a new model soon and it is expected to launch as the Moto E40. Ahead of the launch of the phone, a leak has revealed all of its key specs as well as a price range.

The Moto E40 will have a 6.53-inch display. The screen has an HD+ resolution and a 90Hz refresh rate according to the young German blogger, Nils Ahrensmerier of Mobilegeeks, who posted the specifications on Twitter.

A Geekbench result already revealed that the chipset is a Unisoc processor and now we know it is the Unisoc T700, the same one inside the Moto G20 that was announced in April. Motorola will ship the phone with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of expandable storage. We expect there will be other configurations at launch.

For its cameras, the Moto E40 will have a 48MP primary rear camera and two 2MP sensors. The 2MP cameras are most likely macro and depth sensors. In front is an 8MP camera that should suffice for video calls and selfies.

There is a 5000mAh battery inside the phone that charges at 10W. While that is slow in 2021, the big battery should mean most of your charging will happen overnight. The Moto E40 will run Android 11 out of the box with Motorola’s My UX on top. With respect to the price, Nils says that the phone will cost between €160 – €170 ($188 – $199).

The Motorola E40 renders show that it has a centered punch hole for the front-facing camera, vertically arranged triple cameras, and a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner. The back appears to be polycarbonate and it has a wavy pattern to make it easier to grip. The power button is textured and above it is the volume rocker and a third button we believe is to call up the Google Assistant.

Early last month, an HTC tablet was spotted on the Google Play Console. The device has now been officially unveiled in Russia as the HTC A100 and it packs mid-range specs at a price that falls under $300.

The HTC A100 has a 10.1-inch IPS LCD display with a 1920 x 1200 resolution. The screen is housed in an aluminum chassis with rounded corners. There are bezels around the display, and while they are not humongous, they are not the slimmest. However, they do have the same thickness on all sides.

For its first tablet in years, HTC has gone with the UNISOC Tiger T618, the same chipset we have seen in phones such as ZTE’s Axon 20 4G and Blade V30 smartphones and the Alldocube iPlay 40 tablet. The 12nm processor has an 8-core CPU made up of two Cortex-A75 cores clocked at 2.0GHz and six Cortex-A55 cores clocked at 2.0GHz. It also has a Mali G52 MP2 GPU.

The processor is paired with 8GB DDR3 RAM and 128GB of storage. There is a MicroSD card slot that allows the user to add up to an extra 256GB of storage. The tablet also has support for dual SIMs via its hybrid SIM slot.

On the back of the HTC A100 are two cameras – a 13MP main camera and a 2MP secondary camera. It also has a 5MP front-facing camera for video calls. There are two speaker grilles at the bottom, and on the same side as the SIM tray and USB-C port lies an audio jack. The tablet packs a 7000mAh battery capacity, ships with a power brick in the box, and runs Android 11.

The HTC A100 is already available for purchase in Russia at a price of ₽19,990 which converts to about $273. At the moment, we do not know if the tablet will be announced in other regions.

Oukitel, the China-based smartphone manufacturer has officially launched the successor to its C23 smartphone in its home country in the form of Oukitel C25. This time, the company has replaced the MediaTek chipset with a Unisoc chip.

The Oukitel C23 comes powered by the Unisoc Tiger T310 SoC which includes a Cortex-A75 core clocked at 2.0GHz and three Cortex-A55 cores clocked at 1.88GHz. It also comes with a PowerVR GT7200 GPU and the device packs 4GB of RAM.

The smartphone comes packed with 32GB of internal storage and also has a microSD card slot which allows users to further expand the phone’s storage capacity up to 256GB.

It features a 6.52-inch HD+ display that offers a screen resolution of 720 x 1600 pixels. On the top of the screen, there’s a dewdrop notch that houses an 8-megapixel Sony IMX355 camera for taking selfies and video calling.

The phone’s back panel has a triple-camera setup that includes a 13-megapixel primary sensor, a 0.3-megapixel depth sensor, and another 0.3-megapixel AI lenses. There’s also a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor for added protection.

The device runs the Android 11 operating system out-of-the-box and is powered by a 5,000mAh battery but support for fast charging hasn’t been revealed.

The Oukitel C25 comes in two color options — Black and Green. The smartphone has already been listed on the online marketplace Aliexpress for the price of $169.99. However, customers will be able to get the device for $80 during the first sale on 13th September.

Lenovo has launched a new entry-level smartphone in its K-series of smartphones in Russia. The phone, dubbed Lenovo K13, is a step back from the K12 smartphone launched last year, in terms of specifications.

The smartphone features a 6.52-inch IPS LCD display that offers HD+ screen resolution of 1600 x 720 pixels and a regular 60Hz refresh rate. There’s also a waterdrop notch on top of the display that houses a 5-megapixel selfie snapper.

On the backside, the device features a dual-camera setup that includes a 13-megapixel primary sensor and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. There’s also a fingerprint sensor mounted on the back panel for added security.

Under the hood, the Lenovo K13 is powered by the Unisoc SC9863A chipset which has an octa-core processor clocked at 1.6GHz. The device comes packed with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage.

It also comes with a microSD card slot for further expanding the storage capacity. In comparison, the K12 is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 460 SoC, packing 4GB RAM and 64GB internal storage.

There’s a usual set of connectivity options, including 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.2, and GPS. The phone runs the Android operating system out-of-the-box and is powered by a 5,000mAh battery that supports 10W charging.

The Lenovo K12 is available for purchase in Russia in just one color — Blue. It carries an affordable price tag of RUB7,777 which roughly converts to $106.

As expected, Realme has today launched its latest entry-level smartphone under its C-series for the Indian market, dubbed Realme C21Y. The phone was first launched in Vietnam last month.

It features a 6.5-inch HD+ display offering a screen resolution of 1600 x 720 pixels and an aspect ratio of 20:9. There’s also a water-drop notch on top of the display for housing the front-facing camera sensor.

Under the hood, the device is powered by a Unisoc T610 octa-core processor which is not something that you usually get in the Indian market. However, Unisoc has partnered with brands like Micromax, Realme, and Motorola to bring devices powered by its processors in the Indian market, so expect more Unisoc-powered phones in the market.

This processor isn’t a major upgrade compared to the MediaTek Helio G35 packed in the Realme C21 but it’s a bit more powerful. The device comes packed with up to 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. There’s also a microSD card slot that allows you to further expand the storage capacity.

In the camera department, you get a triple-camera setup on the back consisting of a 13-megapixel primary sensor, a 2-megapixel monochrome sensor, and a 2-megapixel macro lens. On the front side, there’s a 5-megapixel snapper for taking selfies and video calling.

Connectiivty-wise, it comes with the usual set of features, including 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 5, GPS/AGPS/GLONASS/, and MicroUSB. There’s also a 3.5mm headphone jack. The device also has a fingerprint sensor on the back panel for added security.

The smartphone is running the Android 11 operating system with the Realme UI custom user interface on top. It is powered by a 5,000mAh battery and is claimed by the company to offer all-day usage with a single charge.

The Realme C21Y comes in two color options in the Indian market — Cross Black and Cross Blue. The 3GB RAM with 32GB storage model is priced at ₹8,999 (~$121) while the 4GB RAM with 64GB internal storage model costs ₹9,999, about $135. The phone will be available for purchase through Realme.com, Flipkart, and Offline Stores across the country starting from 30th August.

The shipments for smartphone application processor shipments from UNISOC has more than doubled in the first half of this year. A new report has revealed that shipments were up by 122 percent over the same period back in 2020.

According to a Counterpoint Research report, Chinese chip designed saw a significant year on year rise in shipments for smartphone APs in H1 2021. This has the company rank fourth in the market with a total share of 8.4 percent and ranked third in the open market. Furthermore, the firm has also been a key partner for operators and local brands in growing markets like LATAM (Latin America) and MEA (Middle East and Africa).

Research Analyst Parv Sharma stated that “UNISOC’s smartphone AP chipset shipments more than doubled in the first half of 2021 compared to the first half of 2020. This year, the company has succeeded in expanding its customer base, securing a series of design wins with major OEMs like HONOR, realme and Motorola. In its home market, the UNISOC T610 and T740 have been successfully adopted by ZTE, Hisense and HONOR. This improved acceptance of UNISOC-powered smartphones by Chinese consumers is a positive signal for its growth in the second half of 2021.”

Last month, Micromax launched the IN 2B entry-level smartphone with Unisoc’s T610 chipset offering decent specs in budget. It is the first smartphone to launch with this chipset in India, but now Unisoc’s Executive Vice President has revealed(to Gizbot) that more phones with T610 technology will enter India.

Eric Zhou, Executive Vice President of Unisoc, said that Unisoc has already collaborated with several Indian and Chinese smartphone manufacturers, which are expected to launch new phones in the coming months.

In particular, Unisoc collaborated with Realme, Micromax and Motorola to bring the Unisoc T610 mobile phones to India. Among these brands, Micromax has already released the In 2B smartphone with T610. We expect Realme and Motorola to launch T610 powered phones in India soon.

Besides, Unisoc has also partnered with Honor, Hisense, and Telcast in the global market. The Chinese chip-making company has reportedly covered 128 countries around the world and is currently planning to expand its product portfolio in India with Indian mobile phone makers.

Micromax In 2B (Unisoc T610) Specifications 

The Micromax In 2B comes with a 6.52-inch LCD water-drop notch display. It is an HD+ panel with 269 PPI and 400 nits of brightness. The device has a 13MP + 2MP dual camera system at the rear and a single 5MP camera at the front.

The device is powered by the Unisoc T610 chipset paired with up to 6GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. It also has microSD card slot for additional memory. It has a 3.5mm headphone jack and USB Type-C port for charging the 5,000mAh battery. It boots on Android 11.

A new report has suggested that Unisoc will see its shipments for smartphone application processors rise by a whopping 152 percent year on year, reaching 68.2 million units in 2021. This also implies that it would be able to overtake Huawei HiSilicon as the third largest smartphone AP supplier.

According to a DigiTimes report, these smartphone APs from the chipmaker were made for use by Chinese handset manufacturers. The report added that the company only shipped 27.1 million smartphone APs for these Chinese brands back in 2020. Furthermore, it has also managed to expand its client list, which now includes the likes of Honor, Realme, and Lenovo. In other words, this would likely lead to a notable boost in the shipments of its smartphone application processors this year.

At the moment, Unisoc is also one of the primary beneficiary of 4G smartphone AP supply constraints. This is due to most of the larger smartphone chipmakers like Qualcomm and MediaTek have shifted their focus to better cater to 5G smartphones. Thus, Unisoc has even benefited from a rise in shipments for 4G smartphones that are still quite common in the world’s second largest handset market, India, along with other Southeast Asian regions and more.

Notably, the company is also expected to see its share for the total smartphone APs shipped for China based smartphone makers to cross 10 percent in the second half of this year. This boost in shipments is also expected to carry forward till the first half of next year, due to the ongoing 4G smartphone AP supply constraints. For those unaware, the chipmaker primarily relies on TSMC to manufacture its 4G smartphone APs.

Realme has a lineup of entry-level smartphones under its C-series and now the company has launched a new device under the same, dubbed Realme C21Y. The phone has made its global debut in Vietnam and could soon launch in other regions.

The smartphone features a 6.5-inch HD+ LCD display that offers a screen resolution of 1600 × 720 pixels and 400nits peak brightness. It features a waterdrop notch that houses a front selfie shooter.

Under the hood, the handset is powered by a Unisoc T610 octa-core processor which is built using a 12nm fabrication process. The graphics on the handset are handled by an integrated Mali G52 GPU.

The device comes packed with 4GB LPDDRX RAM and 64GB internal storage. In the camera department, there’s a triple-camera setup on the back that includes a 13-megapixel primary sensor, a 2-megapixel macro lens, and a 2-megapixel monochrome lens.

On the front side, the smartphone features a 5-megapixel snapper for taking selfies and video calling. Connectivity options include 4G, Dual Sim, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS, AGPS, Beidou, and Glonass.

There’s also a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. It runs the Android 10 operating system out-of-the-box which is now a bit old given that Android 12 has been officially announced. It would have been good if the company opted for the Android 11 OS. The phone has a Realme UI on top and is powered by a 5,000mAh battery.

The Realme C21Y comes in two color options — Black and Blue. The 3GB RAM with 32GB internal storage model is priced at 3,490,000 Vietnamese dongs (approx. $151) while the 4GB RAM with 64GB internal storage variant costs 3,990,000 Vietnamese dongs (~$173).

A new report from Strategy Analytics reveals that the global market for application processors (AP) grew by 21 percent year-on-year to $6.8 billion in the first quarter of this year, i.e. Q1 20201.

Qualcomm led the smartphone with a 40 percent revenue share, followed by MediaTek with 26 percent. Apple stood third with a 20 percent share in the market. Samsung LSI and Huawei HiSilicon complete the list of top five vendors.

The report adds that 5G application processors accounted for 41 percent of the total smartphone APs shipped in Q1 2021. Among them, entry-level 5G APs are sought after, such as Snapdragon 480 and Dimensity 700, which will help phone makers to bring the 5G connectivity to lower price tiers.

Qualcomm and MediaTek benefited the most with the forced exit of HiSilicon from the market due to several trade restrictions. Both companies gained double-digit shipment growth in Q1 2021. On the other hand, HiSilicon‘s smartphone AP shipments declined 88 percent in the same timeframe, per Strategy Analytics’ estimates.

Apple, Samsung LSI, and Unisoc also witnessed growth in shipments as well as revenue in the first quarter. With the increase in demand post-pandemic and new technologies like 5G, the growth momentum is expected to continue throughout this year.

Huawei has already sold off Honor to make it an independent brand so that it doesn’t have to adhere to the trade restrictions and can continue to grow. Now, it remains to be seen if Huawei will spin-off HiSilicon into an independent chip business.

UNISOC, the Chinese semiconductor company, has revamped its line of 5G chipsets. Going forward, its 5G chipsets will be announced under a new line called Tanggula. The manufacturer revealed the name was adopted from the name of the source of the Yangtze River.

The new line is classified into four series – the Tanggula 6, Tanggula 7, Tanggula 8, and the Tanggula 9 series which will take on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 800 series.

According to UNISOC, the Tanggula 6 series are entry-level chipsets, the Tanggula 7 series brings a user upgrading experience, the Tanggula 8 series brings leading performance, and the Tanggula 9 series brings cutting-edge technology.

At the moment, UNISOC has only unveiled chipsets under the Tanggula 7 series. We expect new chipsets under the other series will be unveiled later.

Tanggula 7 series

The Tanggula 7 series includes three chipsets – the UNISOC T770 (formerly known as UNISOC T7520), UNISOC T740 (formerly known as UNISOC T7510), and the UNISOC T760. Below are their specifications:

UNISOC has also announced that the UNISOC T770 will enter mass production and be launched in July 2021.

The semiconductor company also announced its plans for AR. It said it will co-develop a pair of 5G AR smart glasses with the Chinese company Hiscene (HiAR). However, it didn’t say when the smart glasses will hit the market.

HMD Global is holding a not-so-regular launch event on April 8. As per various reports, it is going to revamp the Nokia smartphone naming scheme and bring new ones like Nokia G10, G20, X10, X20. Alongside these devices, it is also expected to bring a Nokia C20 and now, the device has appeared on Bluetooth SIG certification.

As reported by MySmartPrice, four models of HMD Global Oy smartphones TA-1339, TA-1348, TA-1352, TA-1356 appear on the Bluetooth SIG website. All of them are certified as Nokia C20.

If you recall, an exclusive report by nokiapoweruser said that Nokia C20 might accompany the April 8 event of HMD Global. The specs leaked by the report suggested that the device could be another entry-level offering like the Nokia 1.xx series.

Coming back, the listing further shows the required QDID design is from the Unisoc (Shanghai) Technologies Co Ltd., but it doesn’t explicitly confirm anything about the processor inside.

Previously, Nokia has used the Chinese semiconductor maker UNISOC chipsets on Nokia C3 so it shouldn’t come as a surprise if the Nokia C20 indeed has one. Speaking of which, the Nokia C20 is expected to arrive with 1GB RAM and 16GB internal storage variant.

Amidst reports of it running the Android 11 Go edition, it has been spotted on HTML5 test page shows running Android 11 OS. Apart from this, you can expect the Nokia C20 to launch in two colors – Blue and Sand options.

Last but not the least, Nokia C20 is said to retail somewhere around 89 euros(~$106). This is almost closer to the price of the Nokia C3 which launched for a price of 669 yuan($101) in China.

Gionee has launched the budget smartphone, Gionee Max Pro in India. The device will be sold online via Flipkart and it is priced at ₹6,999($95.24) in the country.

Gionee Max Pro: Price, Availability

Gionee Max Pro will be available in a single memory variant. That is, you get 3GB of RAM and 32GB  of onboard internal storage. Gionee has launched the device in three colors- Black, Blue, and Red. This single memory variant is priced at ₹6,999($95.24).

Compared to the predecessor, Gionee Max, the ‘Pro’ variant has launched ₹1,000 more but it has a lot of upgraded features like display, battery etc. Anyway, the Gionee Max Pro will be available on Flipkart online and the first sale is on March 8, at 12 PM IST.

Gionee Max Pro: Specifications and Features

The Gionee Max Pro features a 6.52-inch HD+ display. This display has a dewdrop notch, a 1560×720 pixel resolution, and covered by a 2.5D curved Glass. It measure 165x75x10mm and considering the price, the body should be polycarbonate.

Under the hood, it is powered by the UNISOC (formerly: Spreadtrum) SC9863A chipset paired with 3GB RAM, 32GB storage. In addition to this, you can also expand the storage via a dedicated microSD card slot up to 256GB.

For cameras, Gionee has gone with a dual-camera setup on the back and a single selfie shooter up front. The dual-cameras have a 13MP + 2MP combo while the selfie camera is an 8MP lens. Gionee says the device will have camera features like slow-motion, time-lapse, HDR & Bokeh modes, AI recognition & Face beauty.

Other features include a 6,000mAh battery, face unlock, Google Assistant key, 4G LTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.2, 3.5mm audio jack, GPS, micro-USB charging port for connectivity. Last but not the least, Gionee Max Pro runs Android 10 OS out of the box.

According to the report, MediaTek grabs 31% of the Global Smartphone chipset market share in Q3 2020. Although it didn’t top the 5G category, it overtakes Qualcomm by 2% and also clocks a 5% YoY growth. With this, it gets the crown of biggest chipset vendor for the first time.

Previously, a report on the Application Processor market revealed that MediaTek was trailing behind Qualcomm at a 26% share in Q2. That said, it has gained a lot of grounds on Smartphone chipsets. And it has reportedly happened due to the sale of $100-$250 phones in India and China.

Anyway, the rest of the share is occupied by giants like Samsung, Huawei’s HiSilicon, Apple, and UNISOC. Among this, Apple, HiSilicon, Samsung’s share sits at 12% each while UNISOC gets 4% of the market share. Also, if you notice closely, Huawei’s HiSilicon remains unchanged from 2019 despite showing a declining trend due to the US ban.

Coming back, the report says Qualcomm was the biggest 5G vendor for Q3. Although only 17% of the devices sold in Q3 were 5G, the company gets a resounding share of 39%. With Smartphone production reviving in Q3, and other equipment sales jumping by 30%, companies have managed to outsell themselves compared to previous quarters.

Research Director Dale Gai says MediaTek has raised the bars with its mid-range chipsets and has managed to power 3x more Xiaomi phones compared to 2019. This, along with good performance in LATAM(Latin America) and MEA(Middle East, Africa), leveraging the ban on Huawei meant it’s progress steered faster.

Just like Research Analyst Ankit Malhotra says, MediaTek also managed to power the World’s cheapest 5G-smartphone realme V3, and Europe’s cheapest 5G-device realme 7 5G. However, it still has a lot of ground to capture in the area where its rival Qualcomm has been dominating. Despite the pressure from Apple’s 5G iPhone 12 series and MediaTek, Report says Qualcomm has the potential to get back in Q4.

It is a known fact that Qualcomm and MediaTek are the leading mobile chip companies in the world. Apart from HUAWEI HiSilicon, Apple, and Samsung, there’s also another player called UNISOC. This company’s chipsets are mostly found in entry-level smartphones sold in developing countries.

But earlier this year in February, the Chinese chipmaker UNISOC (formerly Spreadtrum) announced Tiger T7520 as the world’s first 6nm EUV 5G SoC for smartphones. Later in June, news broke out this chipset will enter mass-production in 2020 itself, and handsets powered by it will release in early 2021.

Now, months later, Zhou Chen, the Executive Vice President of UNISOC revealed in an interview (via Sina Tech) that smartphones featuring Tiger T7520 chipset will be mass-produced next year. But he did not say when and hence, we are not sure if these devices will release in the first half or second half of 2021.

Having said that, we can expect Hisense to be the first brand to use this chip. That’s because it was the first company to launch a smartphone called F50 5G with UNISOC Tiger T7510, the chipmaker’s first 5G mobile SoC.
