Casio has listed its new AQ-240E series in the US, expanding its Vintage lineup with three models scheduled for April 2026. The range includes the AQ-240E-2A, AQ-240E-4A, and AQ-240E-7A2, all built around a hybrid analog-digital format and a retro-inspired design.

The watches feature a rounded square case that softens the sharper edges seen on older models like the AQ-230. The case measures 40.9 × 35.8 × 8.1 mm and weighs 51 g. It uses a chrome-plated resin case and bezel paired with a stainless steel band with an adjustable clasp. The band fits wrist sizes from 150 to 205 mm.

Each model uses a pastel dial finish. The 2A variant comes with a light blue sunray dial, while the 4A uses a matte orange tone, and the 7A2 features an off-white finish. The dial layout remains consistent across all versions, with two analog hands and a slim digital display positioned at six o’clock. The wide dial uses slim indexes and a clean layout to maintain readability.

The AQ-240E runs on Casio’s Module 5154. Core features include dual time, world time, a 1/100-second stopwatch with a measuring capacity of 59 minutes and 59.99 seconds, daily alarm, hourly time signal, and an auto-calendar that accounts for February with 28 days. The watch supports both 12-hour and 24-hour formats. The analog display shows hours and minutes, while the digital screen displays time, seconds, date, and day.

Accuracy is rated at ±30 seconds per month. The watch is powered by an SR920W battery with an estimated life of about three years. It uses resin glass for protection and offers basic water resistance suitable for daily use.

The design focuses on a retro-modern look with gentle curves and warm tones, combined with a simple rectangular profile. Pricing has not been officially confirmed, but earlier information suggests it will be around $60, in line with existing AQ-240E models.

Casio Pro Trek PRW-B1000B-2 has been announced in Japan and is set to launch in April 2026. The model takes design cues from Yosemite National Park and is built for outdoor use with a focus on durability, navigation, and safety.

The watch is part of the Pro Trek PRW-B1000 Climber Line. It runs on Tough Solar power, which converts sunlight and indoor light into energy for stable operation. It supports Multi Band 6 radio signals and Bluetooth connectivity for automatic time correction, so it always shows the correct time.

It comes with a triple sensor system that measures direction, barometric pressure, altitude, and temperature. The digital compass uses the second hand to indicate north. A location indicator helps with navigation. The small hand at 3 o’clock points toward a saved location, and the LCD shows the distance from the current position. Users can record a location directly from the watch, which helps when returning during a hike or locating a parked vehicle. It is also water resistant up to 100 m and can operate in low temperatures down to -10°C.

When paired with a smartphone app, the watch can automatically correct altitude data, record routes, and show directions to a destination. It also supports route log tracking for activity records.

The design reflects Yosemite’s rocky terrain. The stainless steel bezel has a sharp, multi-sided structure with slits at the corners that represent cracks in rock surfaces. The dial has a layered design for added depth. Large hands and three-dimensional indices improve readability. The small hand at 9 o’clock is shaped like a climbing piton, referencing climbing gear from the 1970s. Large metal buttons and a crown make it easier to operate the watch while wearing gloves.

The case uses flame-retardant biomass plastic and meets UL94 V-0 certification. This means it will stop burning when the flame source is removed and helps reduce fire spread. The band is made from CORDURA re/cor material, which is lightweight, durable, and made from recycled waste. It is also flame-resistant, reducing the risk of damage from sparks during camping or cooking.

The watch is priced at ¥89,100, which is about $561. It is also listed on Casio’s global website, which suggests a wider international release could follow.

As per the latest IDC report, the Indian wearable device market faced another tough quarter, with shipments dropping by 20.7% year-over-year (YoY) to 38 million units in 3Q24. This marks the second consecutive quarter of decline, as brands struggle with shifting consumer preferences, cautious inventory strategies, and fewer product launches.

Smartwatches: A Category in Flux

Smartwatch sales saw a significant 44.8% YoY decline, with shipments falling to 9.3 million units. Despite the festive season, brands primarily focused on clearing older inventory by offering discounts, especially on e-commerce platforms. Interestingly, the average selling price (ASP) for smartwatches rose slightly by 1.4% to $26.2, reflecting a gradual shift toward higher-priced advanced models.

Noise maintained its leadership in the smartwatch category, securing a 27.4% market share, followed by boAt with 16.8%. Titan, however, stood out with a 37.5% growth in market share, driven by its premium positioning. On the other hand, Fire-Boltt faced a staggering 84.1% decline in growth, signaling a shift in consumer loyalty within the competitive segment.

Earwear Sees Slower Decline, TWS Gains Momentum

The earwear category, while also declining, fared better than smartwatches with a 7.5% YoY drop to 28.5 million units. Within this segment, Truly Wireless Stereo (TWS) devices hit a record 73.2% share, highlighting their growing popularity among Indian consumers.

Boult and realme were the standout performers in this category, with impressive growth rates of 55% and 94.6%, respectively. The rise of offline sales also played a crucial role, with earwear shipments to brick-and-mortar stores growing by 9.4%, counterbalancing the 14.4% decline in online sales.

A Shift in Market Dynamics

One of the most striking trends in 3Q24 was the decline in shipments from smaller, long-tail smartwatch brands, including white-label products. After enjoying a massive 328.8% growth in 3Q23, these brands saw a steep 59.1% drop in 3Q24. Analysts attribute this shift to the market’s maturing consumer base, which is increasingly opting for reliable, established brands.

“The smartwatch category is under stress due to a lack of differentiation and a limited number of brands dominating the market. However, we’re observing early signs of consumers leaning toward advanced smartwatches for better health tracking and functionality,” noted Vikas Sharma, senior market analyst at IDC India.

Emerging Categories Like Smart Rings Show Promise

While traditional wearable categories struggled, smart rings emerged as a promising segment, with 92,000 units shipped in 3Q24. Ultrahuman led the segment with a 36.8% market share, followed by boAt at 20.5%. The category’s ASP fell by 16.2% to $162.1, signaling potential for mass adoption as prices drop and new models enter the market.

The smart ring itself is described as sleek and comfortable. It boasts a silver color scheme and an ultra-thin 2.2mm profile for a “comfortable and non-feeling wearing” experience. Black Shark claims the ring will last a lengthy 180 days on a single charge thanks to the included charging compartment. Even the charging compartment looks sleek, with the ring resting on the same. There is a tiny LED light towards the front of the charging case to indicate if the ring is charging or charged. Pretty neat design overall.

While a release date hasn’t been announced, Black Shark is clearly building anticipation for their new wearable. We are officially entering the era where smart rings might become mainstream. In a lot of ways, it is way less intrusive than a smartwatch, since smart rings are great for people who do not want to add another screen to their already screen-occupied day. We’ll see how other companies follow up – Samsung is already finishing up their Galaxy Ring and we’re excited to see what it brings.

The Huawei Watch 4 Pro Space Exploration takes center stage with its design inspired by space exploration. A teaser video for the Watch 4 Pro Space Exploration has also been released.

The watch boasts a sapphire glass display, a tough exterior of “ultra-tough diamond-like titanium” and a nano-microcrystalline ceramic bezel for durability and a high-end feel. It also includes a micro health check software. Additionally, the watch features UWB Touchless Car Key functionality. It will only be available for Wenjie M9 and Wenjie M7 models after an OTA update. This feature is not supported with iOS though.

The Huawei Watch GT 4 comes in a new Grass Green color option. This smartwatch, launched last year in September, boasts a long battery life (up to 14 days), diverse fitness tracking (over 100 sports), and advanced health monitoring (sleep, heart rate, SpO2). It features a beautiful AMOLED display with customizable watch faces, accurate GPS, and Bluetooth calling. It is compatible with both Android and iOS, the GT 4 runs on HarmonyOS 4.0.

The Huawei Band 9 joins the lineup as a health-focused smart band, catering to users who prioritize health monitoring. The band was announced globally last month. Its arrival expands Huawei’s wearable device offerings.

To further build anticipation, Huawei plans to hold nightly live streams for the next five days, with each session dedicated to a different product category. The wearable new product session will be held tomorrow, April 8th, at 7:00 PM, where these three devices will be officially unveiled.

There is a small catch, though – the smartwatch needs to be paired with a phone running standard Android with Google apps.

You can activate the AI helper by saying “hey Google,” holding a button, or tapping a watch face complication. This feature allows you to answer texts, control music, and perform various tasks that typically require your phone. While this update is undoubtedly good news for Fossil smartwatch owners, it may not be as helpful for those using Wear OS 3 watches from other brands, such as Mobvoi or Montblanc. Basic Bands Sales Decline Affects Total Wearables Market Despite Smartwatches Growth

Canalys reports that only 50 million wearables units were shipped between October and December 2022, marking an 18% decline from the previous year. This decline affected all five major companies. Though Apple saw annual growth for the full calendar year, it was not immune to the Q4 slump. The report attributes the decline to a challenging macroeconomic environment in Q4, which could be attributed to several factors like supply chain disruptions, inflation, and consumer spending habits.

Apple retained its position as the market leader due to its popularity among iPhone users. Google took second place with the Pixel Watch despite a 25% decline in Fitbit devices. Xiaomi, Huawei, and Samsung all experienced YoY declines in shipments during the holiday period. Canalys categorizes wearables into basic bands, basic watches, and smartwatches. However, the differences between these categories are becoming increasingly blurry with every new device release.

Canalys predicts that smartwatches will continue to grow at around 10%, but the decline in interest for basic bands will set the total wearables market at a modest 2% rise. The wearables market has been a hotly contested space in the tech industry, with major players constantly vying for dominance. However, the Q4 slump shows that even the biggest players are not immune to market fluctuations. With every new iteration of its smartwatch, Apple has been introducing health-oriented features that entice its customer base. As of late, the tech giant has reportedly made significant progress towards bringing blood glucose monitoring to its smartwatch. According to insiders cited by Bloomberg, the no-prick monitoring system is now at the “proof-of-concept stage”, which means that the technology is feasible now and could be brought to market in the future. The technology uses lasers to determine glucose concentration under the skin and was previously not scaled down enough, but has reportedly been shrunk down to the size of an iPhone. The system could not only help people with diabetes monitor their conditions but could also alert those who are prediabetic to make lifestyle changes that could prevent Type 2 diabetes.

The project has been under development for a long time, beginning in 2010 when Apple acquired blood glucose monitoring startup RareLight. Since then, the project has been kept under wraps by operating it as a seemingly isolated firm, Avolonte Health, before being folded into a previously unknown Exploratory Design Group (XDG). The company declined to comment on the project’s current status.

While it’s still too early to predict when the technology will be available, the incentives for bringing non-intrusive glucose monitoring to wearables are strong. Apple has marketed its smartwatch as a health device, capable of detecting atrial fibrillation, low blood oxygen levels, and ovulation cycles. Non-invasive glucose monitoring would be a significant step forward for people with diabetes. They would no longer need to rely on devices that pierce the skin, such as a continuous glucose sensor. However, the industry has a poor track record when it comes to bringing no-prick monitors to market, and it remains to be seen how accurate Apple’s solution will be. It might not even be present in the next Apple Watch when it comes out, considering Apple likes to perfect its technologies before it brings them to its consumers.

AUO, a leading provider of display technologies, has made significant strides in the development of next-generation displays. During a recent announcement, AUO Chairman Peng Shuanglang revealed that the company will begin mass production of MicroLED displays this year, with plans to integrate them into wearable devices. Mini LED backlights, which are already standard in high-end TVs and widely used in gaming and car panels, have also seen a surge in popularity.

According to Shuanglang, AUO’s LED display has already surpassed 100 million yuan in sales, with an expected growth rate of several times that figure in the years to come. In addition to AUO’s own research and development efforts, the company has formed strategic partnerships with ecosystem partners to expand its capabilities. For example, during this year’s CES, AUO showcased the Mini LED backlight technology in a smart cockpit display, which received an overwhelmingly positive response.

One of the key challenges in the production of MicroLED displays is ensuring consistent output across millions of individual LEDs. Even at high yields, some defective LEDs may be present. To combat this, chip makers will need to identify defective LEDs and adapt the transfer process. Shuanglang noted that AUO has its own ecological chain for the key mass transfer technology of MicroLED, making it possible to produce commercially viable products.

In addition to wearables, AUO plans to integrate MicroLED technology into TVs and cars in the future. Shuanglang emphasized that the demand for smart windshields in cars is particularly strong, especially given the trend towards automation and intelligence. Chen Jianbin, Senior Vice President of AUO’s Display Strategic Business Group, noted that more than half of the automotive displays that AUO is currently working on are barebone (partially assembled) orders, which is expected to significantly boost future operations.

Looking ahead, Jianbin estimates that AUO’s two technology platforms, AmLED and FIDM, are expected to contribute more than 50% of the growth space for automotive revenue in the next 2-3 years. As the company prepares for MicroLED mass production, AUO will continue to focus on high-end production capacity and make strategic capital expenditures to meet short medium, and long-term development needs.

AUO has also showcased MicroLED transparent displays, which can be applied to car windshields or side windows. The displays have high brightness and high penetration, making them an attractive option for self-driving car windows in the future. With its innovative display technologies and strategic partnerships, AUO is poised to remain a leader in the industry for years to come.

Leading global technology market analyst firm, Canalys has recently published a report on the state of the global wearables market in the first quarter of 2022. In the report, it is stated that 41.7 million wearables were shipped in Q1 2022 alone, of which basic fitness band shipments compromised of only 9.7 million (23.3 per cent of the market), while the rest of the market is held by basic watch and smartwatch shipments at a staggering 32.0 million. 

Overall the worldwide wearables market in Q1 2022 experienced total shipments fell by 4% YoY when compared to Q1 2021. This phenomenon is caused by the rapidly declining social relevance of fitness bands, but fortunately, shipments did not fall further due to the rising popularity of the basic watch and smartwatch market.

Currently, Apple, Huawei and Xiaomi are the Top 3 best-selling wearables brands globally. Apple dominates in first with its 22.1% market share. The company had shipped out 9.2 million of its Apple Watches in Q1 2022, which could be could be contributed to the brand launching not only its flagship Apple Watch Series 7 of smartwatches but also launching a more affordable Apple Watch SE smartwatch, providing more options for the consumers and capturing more of the market share. Due to this, the company experienced a positive 21% growth in annual sales when comparing Q1 2021 and Q1 2022.

Moving onto Huawei, the company rises up from third place last year to second place this year with 11.1% of the wearables market share and 4.1 million total shipments of its fitness bands and smartwatches. The brand remains steady in the wearables market with the main appeal of its smartwatches being the company’s OpenHarmony ecosystem. The OpenHarmony ecosystem allows Huawei smartwatches to not only be connected to your Huawei smartphone, but also to Huawei’s IoT smart devices as well. And that includes the company’s own electric vehicles. For example, you can use your Huawei Watch as digital car keys to unlock your Huawei Car.

Xiaomi, on the other hand, has dropped from second to third with 10.1% of market share and 4.2 million shipments, mainly due to dwindling sales of the brand’s fitness bands. As fitness bands continue to lose in popularity due to their smaller screens, the brand itself is already quietly switching its focus to developing smartwatches. But currently, Xiaomi smartwatches like the Xiaomi Watch S1 are still the company’s first attempts at the concept, and with the shifting marketing focus, the fitness band sales decline is to be accelerated as well.

Coming in at 4th and 5th are Samsung and Fitbit respectively. Samsung remains stable in the wearables market with an increased 8.1% market share in Q1 2022 at 3.4 million shipments, due to the company’s collaboration with Google’s Wear OS for its Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 series of smartwatches. Meanwhile, Fitbit, which has been acquired by Google saw its sales drop to 2.9 million in Q1 2022 with 7% of the total wearables market share. 

Analysing the basic fitness band market, it has been on a steady decline since Q4 2020. The bands suffered a 37% decline quarter-on-quarter (Q4 2021 to Q1 2022), marking the sixth consecutive fall in the quarterly shipments since Q4 2020. And the 9.7 million shipments figure is the first time that the fitness band market has dipped below 10 million in a long time after it had peaked at 27.9 million in Q4 2019.

On the other hand, the basic watch and smartwatch market has seen positive growth YoY by up to 15%. The Canalys report has cited some reasons why watches are growing in popularity.

“Consumers are favouring watches over bands. With bigger displays, richer features and longer battery life, they believe watches are better able to fulfil their health-tracking and digital lifestyle needs,” said Sherry Jin, Canalys Research Analyst. “Basic watches are positioned as an affordable step-up from basic bands, suitable for price-conscious consumers with growing expectations as to what wearables can do.”

Despite its slim profile, customers need not worry about the durability of the sunglasses. Next is the lens of the Xiaomi Pilota Sunglasses. The sunglasses are equipped with industry-leading Nylon-polarised lenses that are imported from Germany. As the fitness band market slowly matures into a saturation point like the current generation of slab smartphones, the next expected upgrade would be more screen real estate for the user to utilise. For smartphones, the next generational leap is set to be foldables, like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Oppo Find N, and rollables such as the Oppo X 2021 and TCL concept devices with their flexible displays. 

For fitness bands, Xiaomi seems to think that flexible displays are the future for fitness bands as well because the company has been developing a new design for its fitness bands by utilising flexible displays.

The news comes from one of China’s patent databases as Xiaomi recently got approved of its design patent to build a fitness band that includes a rollable-type flexible display in the build of the device. The design of the device is as follows, whereby ‘A’ is pointing at the section where the flexible display will be installed.

According to the patent listing, the name of the patent design is called “Smart Bracelet”, and its function is categorised under wearables. The patent highlights that the unique design of smart band focuses on the shape and ergonomics of the fitness band. 

The patent includes views of the design of the fitness band from multiple angles and it is as follows:

Xiaomi is not the first manufacturer that has experimented with flexible display for wearables, as back in 2020, Nubia had released its Nubia Watch with a flexible display that rolled up until it could wrap the front of your wrists. 

The Nubia Watch features a 4.01-inch super flexible AMOLED screen that tends to wrap around the wrist. The dial is made from a lightweight aluminium alloy manufactured using a nano-injection process while it uses biomedical-grade ceramics on the side. The overall lightweight design makes it lighter to wear.

The Nubia Watch was launched on Kickstarter and carried a starting price of $179 in September 2020.

Realme TechLife ecosystem’s first brand DIZO has launched a few products in India, including DIZO Star 300 and DIZO Star 500 feature phones, a smartwatch, TWS earbuds, and neckband earphones.

Now, a new report claims that the company is now gearing up to launch more audio-related products later this month. Further, it adds that two true wireless earphones will be launched in the Indian market.

At least one of the upcoming TWS earphones from the DIZO brand will have support for Active Noise Cancellation (ANC). It is also being said that the earphones may have a premium design but be priced competitively in the market.

However, the launch of true wireless earphones in the Indian market isn’t the only planned product launch from this brand. DIZO plans to launch around 20 products by the end of this year, which will be in the category of Smart Entertainment and most of them will be audio-related products.

It aims to become the leading brand under the TWS category in the Indian market within two years. The brand is currently a part of the Top 10 list of companies by Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) in the earphones category on Flipkart.

While the launch date of the upcoming TWS earphones from Realme’s DIZO brand is not yet known, we expect them to get launched in the coming weeks. In that case, we should see the company start teasing them in the coming days.

OPPO, the China-based smartphone maker is now actively focusing on accessories and a new report claims that the company is soon going to launch its new true wireless earphones in the market — OPPO Enco Buds.

Well-known leakster Evan Blass has shared official-looking renders of the upcoming OPPO Enco Buds TWS earphones. In terms of design, the device looks quite similar in design to the OPPO Enco W11 earphones.

In comparison, the TWS earbuds look quite similar to the Samsung Galaxy Buds+ and the similarity doesn’t end at the design of the device but the charging case also looks the same. The earbuds and the charging case are shown in White colors in the leaked renders.

We expect similar features to its predecessor, Enco W11, including 20-hour battery life, IP55 dust and water resistance, touch controls, and silicone tips for a better fit. There could be support for Bluetooth 5.2 connectivity as well as a USB-C port.

Currently, the exact launch date of the OPPO Enco Buds is not known but it is expected to hit the markets by the end of this month. We expect more information about this in the coming days, as the launch date nears.

The global shipments of wearable products reached 153.5 million units in the fourth and final quarter of last year. This marked a year on year growth of 27.2 percent in this period while the annual shipments rose by over 28 percent, reaching 444.7 million units, with Apple leading the market once more.

According to an IDC report, the holiday season was a big driver for sales, owing to new launches and lowering prices. However, the surging demand is also due to the rising trend of wearable products, especially as disposable income rose due to falling expenditure on leisure activities during the pandemic. Furthermore, the rise in demand also marks a shift in the market trends and increasing popularity of smaller connected devices.

Apple led the market with an overall share of 36.2 percent in the fourth quarter of 2020. Its Watch shipments rose by 45.6 percent during this period, thanks to rising appeal of its three models aimed at different price segments, namely Series 6, Watch SE, and Series 3. Furthermore, even its hearables shipments rose during this quarter, despite its year on year performance showing a slight fall to 22 percent, down from 28 percent and 29 percent in the previous two quarters.

Despite the overall market seeing a rise, the growth was not even across various segments of the market, as companies and brands were also affected by the ongoing issue of global semiconductor shortages. Notably, the wristband category declined by 17.8 percent during the final quarter and only accounted for 11.5 percent of the all wearables shipped. By far, the hearables category accounted for the largest share of shipments, with a 64.2 percent share. This was followed by watches that accounted for 24.1 percent market share.

New York Stock Exchange-listed wearable manufacturer Huami has over the years come out with various innovative features for its smartwatch and fitness bands. The Mi Band manufacturer seems poised to continue to blaze the trail of innovation in the wearable market.

The company is reportedly working on new features that would be introduced to consumers in the near future. Some of the features include ECG and blood pressure monitoring, improvements in AI deep learning, and possible Spotify integration.

This was disclosed in an interview by Zepp Health COO Mike Yeung (via). Zepp is a separate brand under Huami just like the Amazfit brand. The COO hint Huami was currently engaging with the US FDA to get its algorithm certified and also working on areas such as ECG and blood pressure monitoring. He also stated that the company was already in partnership with Alivecor in the US.

Alivcor is a renowned EKG sensor manufacturer and is acclaimed as the first company to get an ECG accessory for the Apple Watch approved by the FDA.

“Everybody heard about how Apple Watch got FDA approval, but to be frank, almost 18 months before that, we actually had our Health Band certified as a medical device by the China FDA so it can measure ECG accurately as a medical device,” Yeung added.

Huami isn’t just trying to get onboard the ECG-packing smartwatch train, instead it is working on a new innovation – cuffless blood pressure monitoring and glucose tracking. “Our biggest achievement is firstly our ECG, and secondly, sleep research. We’re going to continue to refine those further, and then the upcoming is in blood pressure and blood glucose monitoring. We are also quite optimistic now, based on current progress, about glucose monitoring. It’s been a difficult nut to crack, but we are now more optimistic than ever that we can do it,” Yeung disclosed.

In order for its product to appeal to a wider audience in the west, the company is partnering with some prominent brands suchas Spotify, according to Mr Yeung. “We’re with ecosystem partners in some instances, such as Spotify. Music playing and payment, for example, are things we are engaging with all the local partners to beef up. Over half of our products are sold overseas, outside of China. But mostly in Europe and Southeast Asia. We do have a very ambitious plan for North America’s expansion. Actually, we planned to expand very aggressively in North America last year, but due to COVID, we suspended that to resume,” he added.

We can’t say if these new features will be on the upcoming products but we won’t wait for too long to find out.

A few days ago, Xiaomi-backed Redmi officially launched a few products in its home country China, including Redmi K40 series and the Redmi AirDots 3 true wireless earphones. Starting today, the earphones are now available for purchase.

The Redmi AirDots 3 are no up for grabs in China for a price of 199 yuan, which roughly converts to $31. It comes in three color options — White, Black and Pink colours. Compared to its predecessor, the design of this new true wireless earphones remains the same but comes with improved performance.

The TWS earphones are driven by a QCC3040 chipset and the Bluetooth version is upgraded to Bluetooth 5.2 from Bluetooth 5.0. It also brings faster connection speed, improved data transmission rate, and stable connection.

It comes with support for multi-functional touch control, built-in XiaoAI voice assistant, and MIUI compatible pop-up window to enable instant viewing for connection and battery status. The earphones also support Environment Noise Reduction technology to remove unnecessary surrounding noises and also comes with an IPX7 rating.

There is also an aptX Adaptive codec for upgraded sound quality. The company claims that the earphones deliver up to 7 hours of non-stop music playback on a single charge which can be extended to up to 30 hours with the charging case.

Huawei Technologies is planning on pushing forward its research and development of its wearables offerings that would focus on health care. The move arrives as part of its efforts to expand into new areas amid the US sanctions.

According to an SCMP report, the Chinese tech giant’s push towards this line could have it catch up with its rival Xiaomi, which is the world’s second largest wearables maker after the Cupertino based firm, Apple. At the moment, Huawei is working on three health research programmes on hypertension management, body temperature, and coronary heart disease. The company announced these initiatives earlier this month in an online event.

While it has announced that it is working on health care related wearables, it has yet to announce when we might see the integration of these new features in its offerings of smartwatches, smart bands, or even eyewear. However, the company did state that it is building a “strong barrier” to entry for other competitors in the industry. Unfortunately, a Huawei spokesperson said that the company has no further comments regarding this matter for now.

As per Jason Low, a Canalys analyst, “The whole industry is expecting [wearable] products which can really help consumers better manage their health [concerns], especially chronic diseases that both young and old people are likely to get. But there is still a long way to go because this requires a lot of R&D investment, as well as cooperation between smart hardware and technology companies.” Back in Q3 of 2020, Huawei was the world’s 3rd largest wearables maker, although, the US trade restrictions have hampered its ability to supply hardware and software components for its core smartphone and networking business operations.

The company’s CEO and Founder, Ren Zhengfei previously stated that the company must stay committed to its research and development, focus on profits and even called for decentralization for survival during this time. Currently, Huawei has over 13 research centers across the globe that work on its smart wearable designs, development of software and hardware, and are even working on health care as well.
