Xiaomi’s HyperOS 3 rollout is officially shifting into high gear. The Xiaomi Pad 7 has started receiving its stable Android 16-based update, bringing along a bunch of visual tweaks and AI-powered tools. And this is just the start — Xiaomi has confirmed that at least ten more global devices will get the same update before the month ends.

The global Pad 7 is now getting build OS3.0.2.0.WOZMIXM, following the China release a few weeks ago. The update includes:

Hyperland, Xiaomi’s version of Apple’s Dynamic Island

An iOS 16-style customizable lockscreen

Performance and graphics optimizations for smoother multitasking

New AI writing and translation features

You can check for it by heading to Settings → About tablet → Check for updates, though the rollout is happening in stages.

With Hyperland, an overhauled lockscreen, and several AI-driven upgrades, this feels like a proper OS refresh. The company’s clearly borrowing a few tricks from Apple — but mixing them with its own flair and speed optimizations.

The Pad 7 is just the first wave. By the end of November, most of Xiaomi’s 2025 lineup should be running on what might be the smoothest version of HyperOS yet.

Unfortunately, it is still unclear which models will be arriving in the Indian market. To recall, the Chinese tech giant previously released the Xiaomi 15 alongside the Xiaomi 15 Ultra’s global debut months after its original launch. So the brand could be following a similar pattern this time around as well. Meaning, that it is unclear if the Xiaomi 17 Pro and Xiaomi 17 Pro Max are also heading to India. Xiaomi could very well wait for the Xiaomi 17 Ultra and launch it in India along with the standard model that was just confirmed.

Xiaomi just announced the new flagship smartphones alongside a bunch of new products. Xiaomi 15 Spotted on BIS

To recall, the Xiaomi 15 was first announced in China back in October 2024. Now, it appears that the Indian release might be right around the corner. The Chinese tech giant’s upcoming premium phone was spotted with the 24129PN74I model number on the BIS platform (Via 91Mobiles). This doesn’t reveal finer details regarding this device, but does confirm that the Indian launch is near. It is worth noting that the listing only mentions the base Xiaomi 15 model and not the higher end Pro variant.

For those unaware, Xiaomi only launched the Xiaomi 14 in India last year, skipping the Xiaomi 14 Pro. However, since the Xiaomi 14 Ultra did eventually launch in India, we can expect the Xiaomi 14 Ultra to drop in the region as well in the coming months. The brand has yet to make any official announcement regarding the Xiaomi 15’s launch yet, but Xiaomi might begin sharing official teasers in the coming weeks.

Xiaomi 15 Civi?

Last year, Xiaomi unveiled the Xiaomi 14 Civi in India. While there is no official word regarding the Xiaomi 15 Civi, the brand might unveil a successor in the middle of 2025. A recent rumor hinted that the company is working on a new Xiaomi Civi series smartphone, which could be powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 9400. This could also be the Redmi K80 Ultra.

Redmi Note 14 Series

Xiaomi recently announced that the Redmi Note 14 series is set to launch in the Indian market soon. Based on what we know so far, Xiaomi plans to unveil the Redmi Note 14 series in December 2024, riding on the momentum of the festive season. In other words, it might hit store shelves by early January 2025. The Redmi Note 13 lineup was unveiled back in June 2024, so this also marks the first time since the pandemic that Xiaomi launched two Note series devices in the same year.

Redmi A4

Alongside the Redmi Note 14 series, the brand also confirmed the upcoming launch of the Redmi A4 in the Indian market. We covered a leak last month, which revealed its 8,499 INR price tag. Xiaomi Smart Air Purifier 4 gets Allergy Care Certification

Earlier this year, the Chinese tech giant launched the Smart Air Purifier 4 and Smart Air Purifier 4 Lite in the Indian market. These came with notable features that allowed the products to help clear out harmful substances from the air around the user. The air purifiers housed a Triple Layer Filtration System. The Smart Air Purifier 4 series is capable of removing particles that are 0.3 microns small as well.

Xiaomi’s Smart Air Purifier 4 lineup have been certified by TÜV Rheinland, being capable of filtering out allergens. So the devices don’t just help clean out the air, but make sure that users’ allergies don’t act up in certain seasons. An example is the negative ion generator that can clear out pollen and dust to allow for better respiratory health.

Xiaomi keeps surprising the tech community, time and again. This time, the Chinese smartphone colossus, has entered into a partnership with Padget Electronics, a subsidiary of Dixon Technologies. Although Xiaomi downplayed the news, describing it as merely “a continuation,” there’s more to it than meets the eye.

The deal struck between the two companies centers around Padget Electronics assembling Xiaomi smartphones in its facility located in Noida, Uttar Pradesh. While this deepens Xiaomi’s roots in Indian soil, it also lends credence to the Indian government’s ambitious ‘Make in India’ initiative. Atul B Lall, Dixon’s vice-chairman, hailed the partnership as a “major milestone” for the project aimed at bolstering domestic manufacturing.

So why is Xiaomi so modest about the new deal? The reason lies in Xiaomi’s already substantial Indian operations. Padget Electronics is but one of five contract manufacturers the company has in the country. The alliance, then, isn’t a game-changer but rather a calculated move to reinforce its standing in what is the world’s second-largest smartphone market. Xiaomi currently holds about 15% of India’s smartphone market, trailing behind Samsung and Vivo.

Another layer to this story is the wider shift of electronics brands looking to spread their manufacturing wings outside of China. India’s incentive schemes to promote local manufacturing have been successful in drawing international players like Xiaomi and Apple. Padget itself has received grants from a government program that aims to ramp up telecom and networking product manufacturing.

Xiaomi has launched some high-end 5G phones in the market, including the Xiaomi 13 Ultra, which competes with the likes of Galaxy S23 Ultra and iPhone 14 Pro Max. Despite this, the Chinese company seems to be committed to its core strategy of offering affordable smartphones tailored for the Indian market. Xiaomi plans to cater to India’s budget-friendly 5G market segment as the company’s India president, Muralikrishnan B, recently pointed out that real potential for 5G lies within the price range of Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000.

The Real Potential for 5G Lies in the Mid-Range Market?

Muralikrishnan B said in an interview with CNBC-TV18 that “Majority of the devices sold in the high-end segment, which is the above Rs 30,000 segment have 5G. Then it diffused to the Rs 15,000 to Rs 20,000 bracket. However, the big opportunity lies in the Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000 bucket where we (Xiaomi) have launched a few devices like Redmi Note 10T 5G, Redmi Note 11T 5G.”

The executive is not wrong, as most Indians still prefer to buy a balanced budget smartphone rather than opting for a premium one. The average selling price (ASPs) of smartphones in India was $224 (around Rs. 18,000) in 2022, according to Statista. Additionally, focusing on the Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000 price range might prove beneficial for Xiaomi, considering the company’s reputation for offering budget-friendly phones in India.

After all, Xiaomi is not having the best time in India. According to Counterpoint Research numbers from January, Xiaomi’s India smartphone shipments in 2022 declined by 24% year-on-year. Despite managing to maintain its top position overall for 2022, the company dropped to the third place in Q4, falling behind Samsung and its Chinese competitor, Vivo.

Xiaomi’s confusing portfolio might also have something to do with its dimming shine in India. We believe the Chinese giant needs to fix its smartphone portfolio in India to keep up with the competition.

Xiaomi, the Chinese smartphone giant, is changing its approach in India to prioritize offline sales through retail outlets. The Xiaomi India president revealed that this shift in strategy is to reinvigorate its smartphone sales and catch up with its competitor Samsung.

India has experienced a surge in e-commerce sales through platforms like Amazon and Flipkart, enabling Xiaomi and other smartphone brands to expand their market presence in one of the world’s fastest-growing smartphone markets, which boasts 600 million users. However, despite the online growth, offline retail remains the dominant channel, accounting for the majority of smartphone sales in the country.

Currently, Xiaomi already has a strong presence in 18,000 offline stores across India. Now, the company plans to further increase its offline footprint to capitalize on the untapped potential of retail. Muralikrishnan B., Xiaomi’s India head, acknowledged the company’s relatively lower market position in the offline segment, noting that competitors have been executing their strategies well and enjoying a larger market share.

To regain its market share, Xiaomi intends to collaborate with phone vendors and offer a wider range of products such as Xiaomi TVs and security cameras, leveraging the less intense competition in these areas. Expanding beyond its existing 18,000 outlets, Xiaomi aims to extend its store network in India. Muralikrishnan also acknowledged the issue of stores prominently displaying rival brands alongside Xiaomi products, which the company plans to address to strengthen its marketing efforts.

Recent data from Counterpoint Research reveals that Xiaomi has slipped behind Samsung in terms of market share in India, with Samsung currently holding a 20% share compared to Xiaomi’s 16%. To enhance its offline presence, Xiaomi plans to hire more store promoters who engage and pitch Xiaomi phones to buyers inside retail outlets. The company aims to triple the number of promoters to 12,000 by the end of the following year, compared to early 2023 levels.

By shifting its focus towards offline sales and expanding its retail network, Xiaomi aims to revive its smartphone sales in India and narrow the gap with Samsung. Recognizing the significance of physical stores in the Indian market, Xiaomi aims to capture the attention of consumers through brick-and-mortar channels and strengthen its competitive position.

Xiaomi has apparently made a major reshuffling in its operations in India. The company that has employed over 1,400 people in the region has made mass layoffs in the region. So here are all the details.

Xiaomi India brings employees down to 1,000

Following a decline in the market share and scrutiny by the local government, the Chinese tech giant has decided to undergo a major downsizing effort in employee count. So now, the headcount will fall from somewhere between 1,400 and 1,500 down to just 1,000. The news arrives from an employee that spoke to the Economic Times recently. Reportedly, the brand is let go of around 30 people in just the past week.

In other words, it is likely that more employees would follow soon in a similar fashion. Xiaomi has been cutting employees since the start of this year, so this news arrives as no surprise. ET reached out for a comment and a Xiaomi India spokesperson responded by saying “As with any company, we take headcount decisions based on the market’s state and business projections.” He further added that the company will also hire on an ‘as and when needed basis.’

The report further adds that a senior executive from the brand revealed that the leadership team was told to designate a part of their teams for a performance review, which would clear them for termination based on their individual performance. The Central Government of India has formulated a strategic proposal aimed at regulating the operations of Chinese mobile operators within the country. According to a report by The Economic Times, the government has made a formal request to prominent Chinese mobile brands including Xiaomi, OPPO, Realme, and VIVO, urging them to establish partnerships with Indian entities for their local operations. This move is seen as an effort to ensure greater accountability and involvement of Indian stakeholders in the functioning of these mobile companies within the country.

At recent meetings organized by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, both Chinese handset firms and the India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) were apprised of the concerns raised by the Central Government. The discussions centered around issues related to Chinese mobile operators conducting business in India.

Furthermore, as part of its efforts to regulate and promote the inclusion of Indian stakeholders, the Central Government has urged Chinese mobile handset firms to appoint Indian executives in crucial leadership roles such as CEO (chief executive officer), CFO (chief financial officer), CTO (chief technical officer), and others.

The Chinese mobile handset firms have also been directed to engage Indian contract manufacturers and significantly ramp up local manufacturing, extending it to the component level through collaborations with Indian enterprises. The Central Government has emphasized the need for joint ventures with Indian businesses to facilitate this expansion. Additionally, the companies have been urged to increase their exports from India and establish local distribution networks. These measures aim to boost domestic manufacturing, create employment opportunities, and enhance India’s position as a manufacturing hub for the mobile industry. 

Why is Government introducing New Rules for Chinese Handset Firms?

In light of ongoing investigations into tax evasion and allegations of fraudulent remittances amounting to significant sums, new regulations have been introduced for Chinese smartphone manufacturers operating in India. These rules come at a time when several Chinese smartphone brands are under scrutiny for their financial practices. To ensure fair competition and address concerns raised by offline retailers regarding aggressive online discounting, the government is collaborating with them to establish a level playing field.

The objective is to encourage the involvement of Indian equity partners not only in manufacturing but also in the sales and marketing activities of these companies. Xiaomi has just officially revealed that it will be launching its new Pad 6 tablet model in the Indian market soon. The company has announced that it will be launching the large screen device later this month, so here are all the details.

Xiaomi Pad 6 to launch with Snapdragon 870 & 11 inch display

The Chinese tech giant had first launched its latest premium grade tablets back in April. The initial release was in its home market of China, with the tablet soon being announced for the European market as well last month. Now, the brand officially revealed that it will be unveiling the Xiaomi Pad 6 model in India on 13th June 2023. It shared the launch teaser on Twitter and even shared a teaser image.

The Pad 6 model from the company sports an 11 inch LCD panel that has a 2880 x 1800 pixel resolution. This display also offers an impressive 144Hz refresh rate, 10 bit color depth, HDR10, P3 color gamut, and Dolby Vision as well. The screen is certified by TUV Rheinland for low blue light level for a more comfortable viewing experience. The tablet weighs 490 grams but measures an ultra slim 6.51mm in thickness.

Under the hood, the Xiaomi Pad 6 is equipped with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 SoC that is paired with up to 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage. The rear features a 13 megapixel camera, while the front houses an 8 megapixel selfie camera. A large 8,840mAh battery pack powers the device, which supports 33W wired fast charging. Yesterday, Xiaomi permanently slashed the price of the Redmi K50i and Redmi Note 12 5G. Now the Chinese brand has announced a permanent price cut on the Xiaomi 12 Pro and Redmi 12C smartphones. The flagship Xiaomi 12 Pro is getting the second price cut after the first one of Rs 10,000 earlier this year when its successor i.e. the Xiaomi 13 Pro debuted in the country. Xiaomi 12 Pro and Redmi 12C get a permanent price cut

Post the first price cut in February this year, the Xiaomi 12 Pro’s price has been slashed permanently for the second time. This time, the smartphone’s price has been reduced by Rs 8,000 on both RAM and storage configurations. The revised price is also reflected on the brand’s official website as well as on Amazon. 

The Xiaomi 12 Pro 8GB + 128GB and 12GB + 256GB variants were available for Rs 52,999 and Rs 56,999 respectively. These are now priced at Rs 44,999 and Rs 48,999 respectively. Additionally, Xiaomi is also offering flat Rs 2,000 instant discount for ICICI, HDFC, SBI, and Axis Bank credit cardholders. There is also Rs 2,000 additional exchange bonus above the base value of old smartphone. This should bring down the effective price of the Xiaomi 12 Pro. 

The Redmi 12C was launched in March this year. The 4GB + 64GB and 6GB + 128GB options were priced at Rs 8,999 and Rs 10,999. Only the base variant has got a price cut of Rs 200 making it available for purchase at Rs 8,799.

Xiaomi India has announced its plans to use local content in the production of its smartphones in India. The company has also signed up Optiemus Electronics to manufacture Bluetooth audio devices, thus extending the Xiaomi brand to the hearables segment in India. Xiaomi currently produces smartphones and smart TVs in the subcontinent.

Optiemus Electronics manufactures smart hearables for a number of brands including Noise and Ambrane. The company will manufacture the upcoming Bluetooth neckband from the partnership at its Noida manufacturing facility. The single-assembly line facility can produce 40,000 units per day and employs about 70 persons. It is however unclear the value of the new Xiaomi-Optiemus partnership.

Xiaomi hopes to leverage the Optiemus deal to accelerate its localization policy for both its products and components. It says it hopes to expand such collaborations to a wider range of categories across its product lineup. The move snugly fits into the Made in India policy that encourages local manufacturing. Xiaomi says that Optiemus will be making the printed circuit board assemblies (PCBAs) for the devices and also do the final assembly and testing of the product.

Optiemus expressed satisfaction with the partnership with Xiaomi India. It stressed that the collaboration is a significant testimony to its expertise and growing capabilities. Xiaomi and Optiemus both expect the new partnership to grow beyond the initial level and expand the use of local components in their products. Xiaomi also seeks to shore up its outlook in India on the back of a negative bounce in 2022.

As the name suggests, the Chinese tech giant has just unveiled a new robot vacuum cleaner that can automatically clear your home’s floor all on its own. This is possible thanks to the strong motor that is capable of a 2200 Pa suction output that is paired with a new gyroscope, an optical sensor aided navigation system, and houses 25 high precision sensors for optimum cleaning. These sensors include wall sensor, docking sensor, cliff sensor, collision sensor, and a wheel speed sensor as well.

The Robot Vacuum-Mop 2i is powered by a 2,600mAh battery pack that enables it to offer a total run time of 100 minutes and can clean up to 1,200 square feet. Its body can hold up to 450ml of dust and house a 270ml electronically controlled water tank. The device has a total height of just 81.3mm, which makes it quite compact. But despite its small size, it offers three dedicated cleaning modes, including Vacuum, Vacuum & Mop, and Mop.

Being a smart product, users can even remotely control the device via Xiaomi Home. It also supports voice assistants like Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa. The Xiaomi Robot Vacuum-Mop 2i has an introductory price tag of 16,999 INR and will officially go on sale starting from 28th April 2023 at 12 PM on Amazon.

The model is designed to cover up to 516 square feet area and offers an CADR (clean air delivery rate) of 400 meter cubic per hour. This is possible thanks to its 360 degree air suction technology. It can even run on a dedicated Sleep Mode that drops the noise down to just 32.1 decibels and turns off the indicator light as well. The fans are easily accessible to allow users to clean it. The new air purifier also sports an OLED display that has two buttons, a power button and a button to change modes.

The brand also launched another new air purifier, which is the Xiaomi Smart Air Purifier 4 Lite. As the name suggests, it is a slightly smaller model that takes up less space but still manages to dish out lot of air. It has a CADR of 360 meter cubic per hour and can cover up to 463 square feet coverage. The device also houses HEPA 13 filter, Ionizer, Formaldehyde absorption, and even offers a 360 degree air suction as well.

This model also offers a 33.4 decibel low noise mode and sports an LED display. Similar to its more expensive sibling, it can basically filter out all the visible and invisible pollutants in your home’s air. This includes particles that have a size of PM 2.5, PM 10, and even gas fumes. These are also built for effectively filtering out allergens from the air. Being smart home appliances, they can also be connected with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa for hands free control.

Pricing & Availability

The Xiaomi Smart Air Purifier 4 has a price tag of 13,999 INR. Its early sale starts on 20th April 2023 and will be listed on the company’s official website, offline retail partners, and even Amazon India, with bank discounts of up to 750 INR. Meanwhile, the Smart Air Purifier 4 Lite will go on sale for 9,999 INR starting on 23rd April 2023.

Xiaomi Struggles in India as Samsung Overtakes as Market Leader

According to Counterpoint, Samsung had a 20% market share in the last quarter of 2022 compared to Xiaomi’s 18%. This loosening of Xiaomi’s grip on the market is a lesson for companies that fail to cater to changing consumer preferences in a fast-growing economy with rising disposable incomes.

Xiaomi’s portfolio of budget phones was out of step with the premiumisation trend that is sweeping India, leading to a strategic shift to focus on premium smartphones. In January, it launched the Redmi Note 12 whose top-end variant is priced above Rs. 30,000, and more recently the Xiaomi 13 Pro at Rs. 79,999 – its highest-priced phone in India. The shift has already paid dividends, with the Redmi Note 12 clocking sales of $61 million within two weeks of its launch.

Samsung’s success in India has been aided by a scheme run with its financing partners that offers “convenient and assured” loans, helping generate $1 billion in device sales last year. The growth in premium segment phones was much higher in small towns than in big cities, and almost half the consumers who opted for its financing scheme were first-time loan seekers.

Xiaomi has also tapped partnerships to offer loans, calling them a key growth driver for sales of phones priced above Rs. 15,000. The company will also open more stores beyond its current network of 20,000 retail partners and boost local procurement of mobile phone parts, likely reducing costs.

Some industry analysts believe the new strategy could help the Chinese company return to solid growth in India. Xiaomi has historically enjoyed a strong brand equity, a robust online and offline channel presence, and can make a comeback with a potentially strong premium and value-for-money product mix. The lesson for companies like Xiaomi is that they need to be responsive to changing consumer tastes and preferences to succeed in fast-growing markets like India.

Xiaomi launched the F2 Fire TV in the global market last year. The brand mostly has Android televisions in its portfolio. Now Xiaomi has officially teased the arrival of its Fire TV in India. The company has not explicitly revealed that the upcoming offering will be powered by Fire OS but the teaser does give a hint. 

The upcoming smart TV from Xiaomi is confirmed to be available on Amazon and the brand’s official website. The image in the tweet shared by the company has a tagline ‘Who says entertainment can’t be fiery?’ The teaser also reveals the UI of the smart TV that looks similar to the UI offered by Amazon Fire Stick and Fire Stick 4K. Another teaser shared by the company reveals thin bezels suggesting a higher screen-to-body ratio. Apart from this, Xiaomi is yet to reveal more information. We can expect to learn more in the coming days.  

With Fire OS-powered smart TV, Xiaomi aims to diversify and offer more choices to customers. Some brands offering Fire OS TVs in India are Onida, Croma, AKAI, and Amazon. 

It remains to be seen whether the upcoming Fire OS TV from Xiaomi will be the same as the Xiaomi F2 TV that debuted last year. It comes in 43, 50, and 55-inch screen sizes bearing a 4K UHD resolution and HDR10 support. The television is equipped with two 12W speakers with Dolby Audio and DTS Virtual:X. It is powered by a quad-core A55 SoC coupled with 2GB RAM and 16GB onboard storage. The Xiaomi F2 runs on Fire OS 7 and packs a built-in Alexa.

Xiaomi India is setting a precedent in the world of corporate social responsibility with its latest partnership. Teaming up with Sourav Ganguly Foundation and CRY, the leading smartphone and smart TV brand is launching its #BackToSchool initiative to give a helping hand to 1600 underprivileged children in India.

The goal is to provide these young students with academic support, life skills, and self-confidence, all with the aim of reducing dropout rates and encouraging education. Designated centers have been set up in schools in four Indian states: Jammu and Kashmir, Maharashtra, West Bengal, and Andhra Pradesh. For three months, these children will receive mentorship and support in areas related to their studies, as well as counseling, career guidance, and peer group sessions.

Xiaomi has officially confirmed the launch date for its latest flagship smartphone model, the Xiaomi 13 Pro, for the Indian market. The company will officially be announcing the high end device later this month. So here are all the details.

For those unaware, the Chinese tech giant first unveiled the Xiaomi 13 and 13 Pro back in December 2022. However, the brand has yet to announce the launch of the device for the Indian market. But now, the company has revealed that its top end flagship model will be launched on 26th February 2023. Unfortunately, the company only revealed that launch date for the higher end Pro variant. So, it is still unclear if the base Xiaomi 13 will be making its way to region, especially considering the fact that the company skipped the base Xiaomi 12 model last year as well.

This announcement also confirms that the Xiaomi 13 Pro will finally be releasing in the global market. The Xiaomi 13 series global launch should be around the same time or follow soon after the India announcement. The launch event is set for 9:30 PM IST on 26th February 2023 and will be live streamed on the company’s official website, Facebook, YouTube, and even Twitter.

Talking about the smartphone itself, it sports a tall 6.78 inch 2K Samsung E6 AMOLED LTPO display that has a 120Hz refresh rate and supports Dolby Vision. Xiaomi India Head and Global Vice President, Manu Kumar Jain has bid farewell to the company. After a nine-year stint with the company, he announced his exit in a Twitter post. Jain joined Xiaomi in 2014 and spearheaded the company’s India operations. Under him, Xiaomi became the number-one smartphone brand in the country even without any advertising campaigns. 

In his farewell statement, Jain proudly spoke about some of the highlights of his tenure at Xiaomi. The company was backed by former Tata Sons Chairman, Ratan Tata and launched Made in India smartphones and smart TVs. Jain was a Managing Director of Xiaomi India from 2014 to 2017. He was promoted to Global Vice President of the company in July 2021. Under the executive’s leadership, the brand achieved significant growth in sales as well as entered various price segments in the country. Additionally, Xiaomi also led the smartphone market in India for nearly five years until the last quarter of 2022 when Samsung took the top spot. 

Xiaomi India saw a big organisational rejig last year with Alvin Tse taking the helm as General Manager and Anuj Sharma appointed as CMO. Jain’s exit comes a month after Xiaomi India’s Chief Business Officer Raghu Reddy also left the company to pursue new opportunities. Additionally, this is also after Xiaomi India has been on the radar of the Indian government over allegations of tax evasion since December 2021. 

Manu hasn’t revealed what he wants to do next after quitting Xiaomi. He added that he his taking some time off and would like to do something in a new industry.

The Indian government’s efforts to ensure the success of the Made-In-India policy may have scored a big hit. Chinese companies Oppo, Vivo, and Xiaomi have agreed to start exporting Indian-made smartphones to the global market. This shift in manufacturing strategy is a huge boost to India. The central government has continued to pursue a strategic policy that aims to make India a global manufacturing hub for smartphones and electronics.

Previously, the Chinese brands had steadfastly refused to open up their operations to export outside India. The new move is a victory for the government and offers India a slice of the global manufacturing output of these companies. The move sees the companies shifting some of their export volume from their Chinese factories to India. Reports indicate that the three companies have finalized plans to begin exporting products from India. This move aligns with the steps taken previously by Apple and Samsung in India. The potential destinations for Indian-made products include Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America.

There is a combination of factors that could be driving the move of the three Chinese companies. These factors include more stringent policies against Investments from China and the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme. In addition, Chinese telecommunication companies are not on the preferred list of suppliers with several of them facing tax investigations. The PLI scheme offers incentives for Indian-driven production and export. These local manufacturers are the major beneficiaries of government deals and agreements.

The move by Oppo, Vivo, and Xiaomi to come under the PLI regime will not see automatic access to the benefits. The government has said such moves will require its approval. Vivo has already made moves to export from India. It however recently saw its $15 million worth of exports blocked by the regulator. Vivo says the move will not alter its plans to get exports out of India. Both Xiaomi and Oppo are also making inroads into the operation. The policy environment in India shows that there is a move to stimulate exports. The Chinese big three companies were focused on the local market, while their Chinese factories focused on the global market.

The Indian government plans to expand its economy beyond $5 trillion and an export-driven market is a key driver of such a move. All three Chinese tech companies say they are aligned with the goals of the government and will pursue investment in that direction.

A Xiaomi executive has just revealed that the company will soon be rolling out a software update that will bring 5G support to most of its smartphone models in the Indian market.

The Chinese tech giant has already rolled out the update for select smartphone models. Now, according to Muralikrishnan B, President of Xiaomi India, “100 percent of our 5G smartphone models support the NSA network out of the box, wherein users can choose ‘Prefer 5G’ in network settings to connect to the 5G network. Whereas, for seamless SA support, we have already started rolling out the FOTA updates to select devices like Xiaomi 12 Pro 5G, Mi 11X Pro, Xiaomi 11i, Xiaomi 11i Hypercharge, among others. Most devices will start receiving OTA updates by Diwali.”

As of right now, Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio are the only two telecos that are launching 5G networking in India with both the SA (Standalone) and NSA (Nonstandalone) mode in major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Varanasi. Notably, the brand is one of the first to bring 5G support for its smartphones that support the newer networking standard. Oppo is one of the companies that has offered full 5G support for its 5G phones, while Apple is set to offer 5G support soon.

Similarly, Samsung will also bring software update by mid November and Google will roll out software support for the Pixel 6 series and Pixel 7 series of smartphones sometime soon as well. Muralikrishnan added that “We have 20+ 5G enabled devices across price points and have shipped 7 million+ 5G smartphones in India from May 2022 to June 2022. We will continue to provide relevant support to the government and telecom operators to ensure 5G readiness for users across the length and breadth of India.”

Xiaomi had been facing friction in its operations in India, after facing allegations of tax evasion by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), Income Tax Department and the Customs Department. Following all of this, a new rumor had suggested that the company is moving its operations from India to Pakistan. However, it appears that this rumor is false.

For those unaware, the Indian government had seized the Chinese tech giant’s assets that were valued around 5,551 crore INR. The government cited illegal remittances to three foreign based entities, which allegedly also included one Xiaomi group entity that was “in the guise of royalty.” The company has denied these accusations in the Indian high court. However, a day after this court order, a rumor surfaced regarding the brand shifting its operations from Pakistan to India.

But now, Xiaomi India has officially denied this rumor, stating that the news is “completely false & baseless.” The brand further added that “Xiaomi entered India in 2014 & in less than a year, we embarked on our Make in India journey. 99 percent of our smartphones & 100 percent of our TVs are made in India. We’ll take all measures to protect our reputation from false & inaccurate claims.”

This statement was shared on its official Indian unit’s Twitter handle. Since the seizure of assets worth over 5,551 crore INR, the company has claimed that this move has “effectively halted” its operations in the second largest smartphone market in the world. Furthermore, the Karnatake High Court has also declined to provide any relief on the seizure until the investigation is over.

In the second quarter of 2022 i.e. the period from April to June, smartphone shipments in India grew 3 percent year-on-year basis. 35 million smartphone units were sold during this period. However, the first half of the year recorded 1 percent year-on-year decline to 71 million units according to statistical data from International Data Corporation (IDC). 

Although supply chain issues are easing now, IDC attributes the half-yearly decline to the rising inflation resulting in higher market prices. 

As for brand performance, Xiaomi maintained its lead with a 20.4 percent market share. However, it is the only vendor in the top five list with a negative growth on a YoY basis during the same period last year. Realme came second with a 17.3 percent market share and a big 23.7 percent year-on-year gain. Vivo bagged the third spot with a 16.9 percent market share. It lead the offline segment with 24 percent and was the second largest 5G smartphone brand in the country. Samsung dropped to the fourth spot with a 16.3 percent share, however, it lead the 5G segment with a 46 percent shipments. OPPO was the fifth in the list with an 11.3 percent market share and a 2.3 percent YoY growth. 

IDC says that the supply of 5G smartphones is much better than 4G leading to a higher average selling price but low demand. Online channels clocked a 5 percent YoY growth to 52 percent and this is expected to stay strong for the second half of the year due to the festive season. The ASP has reached a new high of $213 since Q4, 2020. The premium smartphone segment of $500 (~Rs 40,000) and above was the highest growing segment with an 83 percent YoY increase. Apple continued to dominate followed by OnePlus and Samsung.

Xiaomi India has appointed Muralikrishnan B as the President of the company’s Indian operations. Previously, he was the chief operating officer of the company for India. Muralikrishnan has been associated with Xiaomi since 2018.

As the new President of Xiaomi India, Muralikrishnan will be responsible for day-to-day operations, services, public affairs, and strategic projects. He will continue to work towards strengthening the company’s commitment to the Make in India and Digital India initiatives.

Muralikrishnan is an alumnus of IIM-Calcutta and has over 25 years of experience in the Consumer Tech domain. Before joining Xiaomi India, he worked as the India head of eBay and the COO of Jabong India. Muralikrishnan was also the Senior Vice President of Myntra (an Indian e-commerce platform).

“Under Muralikrishnan’s able leadership, the company has witnessed strong growth across categories and has substantially scaled its organizational capabilities, and execution machinery, and built a solid foundation in the offline retail segment,” said Xiaomi India in a press release.

Xiaomi also announced that it will focus on reinforcing its commitment to the country, and will continue to “stay true to its core philosophy of delivering innovation for everyone”. The company confirmed that the new changes will be in effect from August 1, 2022.

Xiaomi has been making some big changes in the leadership roles recently. Last month, the company appointed Alvin Tse as the General Manager of the Indian branch. Xiaomi also bought Anuj Sharma back as its Chief Marketing Officer. These new changes are said to be due to the scrutiny and legal troubles the company is facing from the Enforcement Directorate.

Xiaomi is currently among the top smartphone brands in India. The company is now looking to secure its foothold in the country by building a robust and easy-to-access service network. Earlier this year, it introduced the Xiaomi Service+ app. Customers can book repairs, check spare part prices, absolve any queries over chat, and book installation appointments and demos for their devices on this app.

Now, the brand has announced a new battery replacement program for all of its smartphones in India. Under the initiative, consumers can get their Xiaomi and Redmi device’s battery checked at the Mi Service Centre. If the battery turns out to have a lower than advised health, users can get it replaced by paying a nominal amount starting from just Rs. 499. The prices for the battery would obviously vary from model to model and would likely be a bit more pricy for older devices due to production issues.

Nonetheless, the initiative is a good step from the brand toward increasing the life and usability of their devices. As we know, modern smartphones use lithium-ion batteries which degrade over time. With older devices, users experience the battery draining faster than usual. This in turn causes the smartphone to offer decreased overall performance as the SoC usually starts throttling in instances of fast battery drain. So getting a new battery will not only give you better battery life but can also return some of the lost performance over the years.
