What’s special about this smartphone is that it is powered by Xiaomi’s in-house chipset called Surge S1. The rumors that had surfaced in the latter half of 2017 had claimed that the company is working on the Surge S2, the second-generation edition of its chipset. Fresh leaks suggest that the Chinese manufacturer will launch the alleged Surge S2 chipset at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2018 in the next month.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-137811" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Surge-S1-840x473.png?x10805" alt="Surge-S1" width="840" height="473" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Surge-S1-840x473.png 840w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Surge-S1-840x473-300x169.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Surge-S1-840x473-768x432.png 768w" sizes="(max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px" /></p>
<p>After the launch of the Surge S1 chipset, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun had claimed that the company will continue to develop more chipsets in future. It is now speculated that the Surge S2 will be a powerful chipset unlike the Surge S1 that had powered the mid-range Xiaomi Mi 5C. Rumors have it that the Surge S2 that is based on TSMC’s 16nm manufacturing processor features an octa-core processor. It reportedly features four cores of Cortex A73 that clocks at 2.2 GHz and four cores of Cortex A53 that processes at 1.8 GHz.</p>
<p>The other rumored features of the Surge S2 include Mali G71 MP8 graphics, UFS 2.1 storage and LPDDR4 RAM. Also, it does not carry support for CDMA network. These specifications suggest that the performance of the Surge S2 will be on par with Kirin 960 chipset by Huawei.</p>

<p>Previous rumors have claimed that the Surge S2 will be powering the Xiaomi Mi 6C smartphone. However, recent leaks suggest that the first phone to feature the Surge S2 could be the Xiaomi Mi 6X. It is speculated that this smartphone will be sold globally as Xiaomi Mi A2. Leaked information have suggested that the Mi 6X will be sporting a full screen design and it will be featuring a <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2017/12/21/xiaomi-mi-6x-back-cover-leaked/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">dual camera setup on its rear</a>.</p>

<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-120273" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/Xiaomi-Mi-5C-2.jpg?x10805" alt="Xiaomi Mi 5C" width="1920" height="1080" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/Xiaomi-Mi-5C-2.jpg 1920w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/Xiaomi-Mi-5C-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/Xiaomi-Mi-5C-2-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/Xiaomi-Mi-5C-2-1024x576.jpg 1024w" sizes="(max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px" /></p>
<p>The update which comes via a MIUI 8.5.3.0 update is over 1GB in size. You can decide to wait for the OTA or grab the file via the link provided below.</p>
<p>The beta version was already available for over three months already but is only now rolling out as a stable version.</p>
<p>Apart from the bump in version number, the update brings a number of new features and optimizations. For example, the number of system apps that autostart has been reduced by 41. A bug that affects the brightness when you switch from auto to manual has been fixed. There are also updates to the calculator and clock app.</p>
<p>The exciting part of the announcement is the promise to upgrade the Mi 5C to Android O. While the update might not come in time, it is still good news to know it will get it.</p>

<p>The Xiaomi Mi 5C was released in February 2017 and is the first smartphone to be powered by Xiaomi&#8217;s own Surge S1 processor. It has a 5.15-inch display, 3GB of RAM, 64GB of storage and a 2860mAh battery.</p>

This is in line with the company&#8217;s promise during the launch of the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/xiaomi-mi-5c/">Mi 5C</a>. The upgrades will be via OTA push but this one is meant for <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/xiaomi-mi-5c/">Xiaomi Mi 5C</a> smartphones running the MIUI 8 developer ROM.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/xiaomi-mi-5c-9/"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-124925" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/xiaomi-mi-5c.jpg?x10805" alt="xiaomi mi 5c" width="610" height="407" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/xiaomi-mi-5c.jpg 610w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/xiaomi-mi-5c-300x200.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px" /></a></p>
<p>One good thing about Xiaomi&#8217;s MIUI is that it is constantly upgraded to offer users newer and more features and it is so flexible you can decide to stick with a Developer ROM or a Stable ROM, or even a Ported ROM developed by unofficial developers. Developer ROMs are usually updated every week (except for special occasions like Chinese national holidays), and they will get bug fixes and new features in every update. On the other hand, Stable ROMs don&#8217;t have a regular update frequency. They are updated once a month or two months or even longer.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/xiaomi-mi-5c-upgrade/"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-124926" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/xiaomi-mi-5c-upgrade.png?x10805" alt="" width="590" height="350" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/xiaomi-mi-5c-upgrade.png 590w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/xiaomi-mi-5c-upgrade-300x178.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 590px) 100vw, 590px" /></a></p>
<p>In this case, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/xiaomi-mi-5c/">Mi 5C</a> users running the developer ROM will get OTA updates as from today. Alternatively, the update package can be downloaded from the MIUI official website. It must be noted, though, that the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/xiaomi-mi-5c/">Xiaomi Mi 5C</a> comes with the MIUI 8 Stable ROM by default and so will ordinarily not get this OTA update.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2017/02/28/xiaomi-mi-5c-camera-samples-dual-noise-reduction-light-enhancement/xiaomi-mi-5c-2-6/" rel="attachment wp-att-120273"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-120273" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/Xiaomi-Mi-5C-2-1024x576.jpg?x10805" alt="" width="640" height="360" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/Xiaomi-Mi-5C-2-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/Xiaomi-Mi-5C-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/Xiaomi-Mi-5C-2-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/Xiaomi-Mi-5C-2.jpg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /></a></p>

<p>However, if you are eager to get a feel of using Android 7.1 Nougat on your Mi 5C, you can download the Developer ROM from the MIUI Forum. But if you have no idea about flashing your phone and stuff, just chill. The Mi 5C running MIUI 8 Stable ROM will still get updates to Android 7.1 Nougat later on.</p>

Along with the chipset came the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2017/02/27/xiaomi-mi-5c-official-pinecone-s1-processor-5-15-inch-display-super-light-body/">Mi 5C</a> actually powered by the SoC just as rumored.</p>

<p>The Surging S1 processor is the first of what would likely be a long line of chipsets. The processor comes with an octa-core architecture with 4 x Cortex A53 cores clocked at 2.2GHz and 4 x Cortex A53 cores at 1.4GHz. The chip will be built on a 28nm HPC+ process. The company claims the combination of four powerful and four efficient cores result in a perfect balance of performance and power efficiency. As for GPU, the chip is using ARM Mali-T860, which comes with 40% better power efficiency as compared to its predecessor, support for AFBC and ASTC image compression technology and the latest Vulkan standard.</p>
<p>But then, how does the Pinecone chip fare in benchmark tests. Apparently, we won&#8217;t wait for long to find that out as the Mi 5C benchmark score has been revealed online. A set of screenshots grabbed from what is said to be the Mi 5C running through AnTuTu benchmark have appeared online showing not just some details of the phone but also the AnTuTu score.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/mi-5c-antutu-4/"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-120290" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/mi-5c-antutu-4.jpg?x10805" alt="xiaomi mi 5c" width="600" height="1066" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/mi-5c-antutu-4.jpg 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/mi-5c-antutu-4-169x300.jpg 169w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/mi-5c-antutu-4-576x1024.jpg 576w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></a></p>
<p style="text-align: center"><strong><span style="color: #ff0000">Related:</span> <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2017/02/28/xiaomi-mi-5c-camera-samples-dual-noise-reduction-light-enhancement/">Xiaomi Mi 5C Camera Samples: Dual Noise Reduction &amp; Light Enhancement</a></strong></p>
<p>Xiaomi claims the Surge S1&#8217;s overall performance is slightly stronger than those of the Snapdragon 625 and Helio P20. The Mi 5C powered by the Surging S1 chipset was able to achieve 58323 points on an independent AnTuTu test which is not a bad score. This is, however, lower than Xiaomi&#8217;s listed score of 64,817 points as against 64,143 points which the Helio P20 scored and 60,948 polled by SD 625 chip. The guy who ran the test were quick to point out that the benchmark app was run when the device was having a battery capacity of 50%. We may have to wait for a confirmatory test before we judge. But that doesn&#8217;t take away the fact that Xiaomi has done a great job releasing their own chipset.</p>

The phone is essentially a mid-ranger, but the design and the overall looks of the phone are pretty top-notch.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/mi5c-5.jpg?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-120225" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/mi5c-5.jpg?x10805" alt="Mi 5c" width="861" height="484" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/mi5c-5.jpg 861w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/mi5c-5-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/mi5c-5-768x432.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 861px) 100vw, 861px" /></a></p>
<p>The Xiaomi Mi 5C comes in multiple color options, including gold, black, and pink. The phone looks a bit different than other Xiaomi smartphones in the market mainly because of its four curved corners and smoother metal finish. Xiaomi is known to equip its mid-range phones with a large battery, but for some reason, the company decided to keep the battery under 3000mAh. This, in turn, helps in making the Xiaomi Mi 5C super light, weighing just 134 grams and 7.09mm in thickness. The full measurements of the Mi 5C are as follows: 144.38 x 69.68mm x 7.09mm.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/mi5c-4.jpg?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-120224" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/mi5c-4.jpg?x10805" alt="xiaomi mi 5c" width="861" height="484" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/mi5c-4.jpg 861w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/mi5c-4-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/mi5c-4-768x432.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 861px) 100vw, 861px" /></a></p>
<p>The phone comes with a 5.15-inch 1080p display from JDI with 550 nits brightness, 2048 intelligent brightness adjustments, and ultra-narrow 1.66mm bezels. The battery on the phone is just 2860mAh but the company claims that this is good enough for a day&#8217;s usage. The phone supports 9V/ 2A fast charging as well. Xiaomi has also promised Android 7.1 Nougat upgrade for the Mi 5C in March.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/mi5c-2.jpg?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-120222" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/mi5c-2.jpg?x10805" alt="mi 5c" width="861" height="484" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/mi5c-2.jpg 861w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/mi5c-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/mi5c-2-768x432.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 861px) 100vw, 861px" /></a></p>
<p>Coming to the camera, the Xiaomi Mi 5C comes with a 12MP sensor with large 1.25um pixels enabling better low-light photography. The dual ISP algorithm reportedly improves the camera speed by up to 150%. Also, the double noise optimization feature helps in reducing the noise in the images while retaining important details. With support for pixel level dynamic range adjustment, the pictures shot from the phone come out rich as well. Of course, these are the official camera details, only a real life test of Mi 5C&#8217;s camera will reveal its actual capability.</p>
<p>The Xiaomi Mi 5C goes on sale on March 3 at 1499 Yuan (~218) for the 3GB + 64GB version.</p>

Rumor has it that Xiaomi will also unveil a new Mi 5C smartphone along with the SoC.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/xiaomi-mi-5c-price-2/"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-120170" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/xiaomi-mi-5c-price-2.jpg?x10805" alt="xiaomi mi 5c" width="540" height="960" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/xiaomi-mi-5c-price-2.jpg 540w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/xiaomi-mi-5c-price-2-169x300.jpg 169w" sizes="(max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px" /></a></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>As a matter of fact, the Xiaomi Mi 5C had long been rumored to use Xiaomi&#8217;s in-house Pinecone chipset and that seems to have been confirmed when the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2017/02/24/xiaomi-mi-5c-hits-gfxbench-specs-processor-details-revealed/">Mi 5C appeared on benchmark website GFXBench</a> packing an unnamed processor that fits the specs of the Pinecone processor.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2017/02/05/xiaomis-pinecone-processor-details-higher-version-10nm-process/xiaomi-mi-5c-full/" rel="attachment wp-att-116981"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-116981" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/xiaomi-mi-5c-full.jpg?x10805" alt="xiaomi pinecone processor" width="610" height="474" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/xiaomi-mi-5c-full.jpg 610w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/xiaomi-mi-5c-full-300x233.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px" /></a></p>
<p style="text-align: left">Ahead of the expected launch, the Mi 5C likely price tag has leaked online via a screenshot which looks like it had been grabbed from Xiaomi mall. The leak reveals the Mi 5C would carry a price tag of 1499 Yuan ($218). We cannot verify the authenticity of this information, besides, Xiaomi does not release the price of their smartphone officially prior to its launch. So, we&#8217;ll likely rate this leak 30% as it may likely be a fake listing.</p>

<p>The Xiaomi Mi 5C is expected to come with a 5.5-inch 1080p display and would have 3GB of storage as well as 64GB of internal storage. There is also a 12MP rear camera as well as an 8MP front-facing camera. The smartphone runs MIUI 8 based on Android 7.1.1 Nougat.</p>

The Mi 5C is also expected to be released along with the Pinecone chipset on that day and ahead of the event, the Mi 5C has made an appearance on benchmark website GFXBench.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2017/02/05/xiaomis-pinecone-processor-details-higher-version-10nm-process/xiaomi-mi-5c-full/" rel="attachment wp-att-116981"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-116981" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/xiaomi-mi-5c-full.jpg?x10805" alt="xiaomi pinecone processor" width="610" height="474" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/xiaomi-mi-5c-full.jpg 610w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/xiaomi-mi-5c-full-300x233.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px" /></a></p>
<p>The expected specs of the Xiaomi smartphone isn&#8217;t a secret one but the GFXBench listing comes as a reminder. According to the listing, the Xiaomi Mi 5C comes with a 5.5-inch 1080p display and would have 3GB of storage as well as 64GB of internal storage. There is also a 12MP rear camera as well as an 8MP front-facing camera. The smartphone runs MIUI 8 based on Android 7.1.1 Nougat.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/xiaomi-mi-5c-gfx-2/"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-119725" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/xiaomi-mi-5c-gfx.png?x10805" alt="xiaomi mi 5c" width="867" height="778" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/xiaomi-mi-5c-gfx.png 867w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/xiaomi-mi-5c-gfx-300x269.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/xiaomi-mi-5c-gfx-768x689.png 768w" sizes="(max-width: 867px) 100vw, 867px" /></a></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>The most important part of the listing is the aspect of the processor where the device is listed with an octa-core Cortex-A53 processor with a top frequency of 2.1GHz and a base frequency of 1.4GHz. Powering the graphics is a Mali-T860 GPU. No doubt, the configuration fits those of the Pinecone chip.</p>

<p>Sadly, the device is listed as not having NFC onboard but there are connectivity options like WiFi, GPS and others. It is also coming with a single slot for SIM card. Just to reminder you, though, that GFXbench&#8217;s data are not always accurate, so until Xiaomi takes the veil off the Mi 5C, we can&#8217;t say for sure if these are the actual specs.</p>

Back then it ran Android 6.0 Marshmallow. A report later surfaced saying that ‘Meri’ is the codename for the Xiaomi Mi 5C. Today the device has again surfaced on Geekbench but with a couple of changes.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify">The new Geekbench listing shows the Xiaomi Meri runs Android 7.1.1 but still keeps the 1.4GHz processor which we have come to know as the Pinecone V670. The RAM is also the same at 3GB but the benchmark scores have increased slightly.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-118952 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/Xiaomi-Meri-Geekbench-2.jpg?x10805" alt="Xiaomi Mi 5C ‘Meri’ Geekbench 2" width="624" height="690" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/Xiaomi-Meri-Geekbench-2.jpg 624w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/Xiaomi-Meri-Geekbench-2-271x300.jpg 271w" sizes="(max-width: 624px) 100vw, 624px" /></p>
<p style="text-align: justify">The device scores 762 in the single-core test and 3399 in the multi-core test, up from 758 and 3105 when it ran Android 6.0.</p>
<p style="text-align: center"><span style="color: #ff0000">READ MORE:</span> <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2017/02/09/xiaomi-mi-mix-running-android-nougat-spotted-geekbench/">Xiaomi Mi MIX Running Android Nougat Spotted on GeekBench</a><span id="more-118946"></span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify">Xiaomi had earlier today announced that it will be launching its new Pinecone processor on the 28th of February. There is no mention of the Xiaomi Mi 5C being launched on that day. However, the chances of that happening are slim. While this device might be running Android Nougat, it doesn&#8217;t seem MIUI 9 is ready. It will be unusual to launch the Mi 5C with MIUI 8 based on Android Nougat. On the other hand, if it launches with Android Marshmallow, we can be sure of it getting updated to Nougat.</p>

<p>The Xiaomi Pinecone processor is expected to be featured on the Mi 5C but it is not known if the company would launch the smartphone along with the processor. Earlier rumors had tipped the Mi 5C to launch this month so it&#8217;s just possible Xiaomi might spring a surprise.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><strong><span style="color: #ff0000;">Related: </span><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2017/02/02/xiaomi-mi-5c-feature-self-developed-octa-core-pinecone-soc-launching-month/">Xiaomi Mi 5C To Feature Self-Developed Octa-core Pinecone SoC, Launching This Month!</a></strong></p>
<p>As to the details about the Pinecone processor, Xiaomi did not reveal details but we&#8217;d get to know more on that day. According to rumors, the SoC is said to come in two versions. The two models go by the model numbers V670 and V970 and the Mi 5C would launch with the lower V670 model. The V670 is said to use four Cortex-A53 large cores and four Cortex A-53 small cores. The GPU is composed of the Mali-T860 MP4 GPU with a clock speed of 800MHz. The V670 is also said to be using a 28nm manufacturing process.</p>

<p>On the other hand, the higher V970 model is said to come in the fourth quarter (Q4) of this year and has a core parameter comprising four Cortex-A73 cores and four Cortex-A53 cores in an octa-core architecture. The CPU is said to have a minimum clock frequency of up to 2.0GHz and a maximum clock speed of 2.7GHz. The V970 is also equipped with a more superior Mali G71 MP12 GPU with a clock speed of 900MHz. We&#8217;d know the official details on February 28. The event would kick off at 2pm and the venue is the Beijing National Convention Centre.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;"><strong>UPDATE: </strong></span></p>

Rumored to be released in March, a new image of the phone has been leaked online showing it sporting a new design.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">When the first set of images of the Mi 5C were leaked online back when it was still called Xiaomi Meri, the device featured a physical home button. However, this new image leaked on Weibo by @strong machine and said to have originated from a Foxconn factory lacks the physical home button. Another difference is the position of the front camera which has been moved from the right to the left.</p>
<figure id="attachment_118418" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-118418" style="width: 600px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-118418" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/Xiaomi-Mi-5C-New.jpg?x10805" alt="New Xiaomi Mi 5C" width="600" height="801" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/Xiaomi-Mi-5C-New.jpg 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/Xiaomi-Mi-5C-New-225x300.jpg 225w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-118418" class="wp-caption-text">New Xiaomi Mi 5C</figcaption></figure>

<p style="text-align: justify;">This new device is better looking and the front bezels are thinner but since there is no picture of the rear we can&#8217;t confirm the position of the fingerprint scanner. The front also lacks the groove of the ultrasonic fingerprint scanner in the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2016/09/27/ultrasonic-fingerprint-scanner-xiaomi-mi-5s-visible/">Mi 5S</a>. So we can&#8217;t say if there is one embedded underneath the display.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">We might have to wait until more leaks surface or until the phone is eventually released in March. The Xiaomi Mi 5C is rumored to have a 5.5-inch display, 3GB RAM, 64GB of built-in storage and a 12MP Omnivision 12870 rear camera. The front camera is an 8MP shooter and there is a 4500mAh battery in it. Since MIUI 9 is not out yet, it should ship with MIUI 8 based on Android 6.0. Price is said to be about ¥1499 (~$218).</p>

<p>Now, if you think that isn&#8217;t a good one for 2017, do not despair as more information has emerged about the Pinecone processor which is billed to give Xiaomi some level of independence in choosing the chip crammed its smartphones in the near future. It was not going to use a Qualcomm chip or one from Mediatek, neither was it going to sport Huawei&#8217;s Kirin processor or Samsung&#8217;s Exynos. Though we would still be surprised if it had used any of the last two. The Mi 5C was going to have a chip built by Xiaomi called Pinecone.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify">Pinecone is the result of a partnership formed in 2014 between Xiaomi-controlled Beijing Electronics Co. Ltd. and Leadcore Technology Ltd., a subsidiary of Datang Telecom. The partnership led to the formation of Beijing Pinecone Electronics Co. Ltd, a chip manufacturing company with Xiaomi owning 51% of the stake and Leadcore owning the remaining 49%. The new pinecone chip is actually not their first. It is said that the Leadcore L1860C in the <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/2015/03/31/the-cheapest-xiaomi-redmi-2a-smartphone-is-official-costs-just-599-yuan/">Xiaomi Redmi 2A</a> is the first chip from the company.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-116961" src="http://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/Pinecone-Weibo.png?x10805" alt="Pinecone Weibo" width="610" height="280" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/Pinecone-Weibo.png 610w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/Pinecone-Weibo-300x138.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px" /></p>
<p style="text-align: justify"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-116960" src="http://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/Pinecone-website.jpg?x10805" alt="Pinecone website" width="610" height="325" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/Pinecone-website.jpg 610w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/Pinecone-website-300x160.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px" /></p>
<p style="text-align: justify">The Xiaomi Mi 5C will be the first device to launch with the new processor. Reports say there are two versions of the processor: one will be made up of 8 Cortex-A53 chips and will have a performance equal to Mediatek&#8217;s Helio P10 while the other called ‘Pinecone 2’ will be made up of 4 Cortex A73 chips and 4 Cortex A53 chips.</p>
<p style="text-align: center"><span style="color: #ff0000">READ MORE:</span> <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/2017/02/03/unofficial-version-android-7-1-1-xiaomi-mi-note-mi-4-mi-note-pro-spotted/">Unofficial Version of Android 7.1.1 for Xiaomi Mi Note, Mi 4 and Mi Note Pro Spotted</a><span id="more-116959"></span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify">Xiaomi has already opened an official Weibo account  and website for Pinecone but you won&#8217;t find much info on the latter. The news of Xiaomi having its own processor is said to have affected Huawei who used to be the only Chinese manufacturer with its own line of processors.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify">The Xiaomi Mi 5C is expected to launch this month with a 5.5-inch 1080p display, 3GB of RAM and a 64GB of built-in storage. In  addition to the octa-core processor clocked at 2.2GHz, it is expected to have either a 12MP or 13MP rear camera and an 8MP front shooter. Pricing details are currently unknown.</p>

<p>According to the source, five different Xiaomi new models were said to have gone through the certification. The models were listed with the following model numbers; 2105212, 2016089, 2016101, MAE136 and MBE6A5. Of the five models, the one listed as MAE136 is said to be the Mi 5C, also code-named Meri.</p>

<p>The listing for the Mi 5C aka Xiaomi Meri shows that the device will use a 5V/2A power adapter and thus does not support the current high voltage fast charge technology. The Mi 5C comes with ultra-narrow bezels around the display and a sleek design overall. The device is also tipped to launch with Xiaomi’s own Pinecone processor and it did<a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/2016/10/16/xiaomi-meri-benchmarked-antutu-geekbench-live-photos-included/"> post a score on AnTuTu similar to the Snapdragon 625 capabilities</a>. Other likely specs of the Mi 5C includes a 5.5-inch display with 2.5D curved glass, 3GB of RAM, 64GB of internal storage, a 12MP rear camera and 8MP front-facing selfie shooter. The device will run on MIUI 8 based on Android Marshmallow. The Mi 5C is said to have gotten a February release date, we just hope it turns out to be true.</p>

The device has now been listed on popular online mall Jingdong (JD.com) with a price tag of 9,999 Yuan which is very likely an error. This is a surprising one, though, and could only mean that the Mi 5C&#8217;s launch is perhaps imminent.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/xiaomi-mi-5c-5/"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-110783" src="http://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/xiaomi-mi-5c.jpg?x10805" alt="xiaomi mi 5c" width="600" height="1066" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/xiaomi-mi-5c.jpg 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/xiaomi-mi-5c-169x300.jpg 169w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/xiaomi-mi-5c-576x1024.jpg 576w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></a></p>
<p>According to the source, this is a third party listing and could be just to elicit our enthusiasm for the long expected Xiaomi smartphone. But then we never can tell, the Xiaomi Mi 5C could be launched very soon but not for 9999 Yuan. The device has previously been spotted on Taoboa listed with a 999 Yuan price tag ($144), so it is possible the Jingdong-listed 9999 Yuan price tag is an error. The device is speculated to fall into the 999 Yuan price category when launched considering the specs.</p>

<a href='https://www.gizmochina.com/xiaomi-mi-5c-2-2/'><img width="169" height="300" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/xiaomi-mi-5c-2-169x300.jpg?x10805" class="attachment-medium size-medium" alt="" loading="lazy" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/xiaomi-mi-5c-2-169x300.jpg 169w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/xiaomi-mi-5c-2.jpg 440w" sizes="(max-width: 169px) 100vw, 169px" /></a>

<p>Renders of the device has featured in several leaks earlier showing us the sleek design of the Mi 5C which is code-named Xiaomi Meri. The Mi 5C comes with ultra-narrow bezels around the display and a sleek design overall. The device is also tipped to launch with Xiaomi&#8217;s own Pinecone processor. Other likely specs of the Mi 5C includes a 5.5-inch display with 2.5D curved glass, 3GB of RAM, 64GB of internal storage, a 12MP rear camera and 8MP front-facing selfie shooter. The device will run on MIUI 8 based on Android Marshmallow.</p>

Latest report says that the Xiaomi phone code-named Meri is actually the Xiaomi Mi 5c. Surprisingly, online mall, Taobao, has already listed the phone on its site.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">While it is not unusual for a retail site to list a phone before its official release, this still caught us unawares as phones that are usually listed before their release date are phones that are very popular and whose release are confirmed such as Samsung&#8217;s S series flagships, a Nexus or an iPhone.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-108253 size-full" src="http://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Xiaomi-Mi-5c-Meri-Taobao.jpg?x10805" alt="Xiaomi Mi 5c" width="600" height="1067" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Xiaomi-Mi-5c-Meri-Taobao.jpg 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Xiaomi-Mi-5c-Meri-Taobao-169x300.jpg 169w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Xiaomi-Mi-5c-Meri-Taobao-576x1024.jpg 576w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The Xiaomi Mi 5c is listed on Taobao for 999 Yuan ($144) but they&#8217;ve also added that its a sale price and not the final price.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The page says the Mi 5C is also VR ready and you can decide to add a VR glasses (or a power bank or bluetooth headphones) to your order. One weird thing is that the specification page lists the specs of the <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/product/100656/">Xiaomi Mi 4c</a> and not the specs of the Mi 5c that have leaked. The processor is listed as a Snapdragon 808, the screen size as 5-inches, and the release date as September, 2015.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-108252 size-full" src="http://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Xiaomi-Mi-5c-Meri-Taobao-2.jpg?x10805" alt="Xiaomi Mi 5c" width="600" height="1067" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Xiaomi-Mi-5c-Meri-Taobao-2.jpg 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Xiaomi-Mi-5c-Meri-Taobao-2-169x300.jpg 169w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Xiaomi-Mi-5c-Meri-Taobao-2-576x1024.jpg 576w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /> <img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-108251 size-full" src="http://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Xiaomi-Mi-5c-Meri-Taobao-3.jpg?x10805" alt="Xiaomi Mi 5c" width="600" height="1067" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Xiaomi-Mi-5c-Meri-Taobao-3.jpg 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Xiaomi-Mi-5c-Meri-Taobao-3-169x300.jpg 169w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Xiaomi-Mi-5c-Meri-Taobao-3-576x1024.jpg 576w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">The Xiaomi Mi 5c on the other hand is expected to launch with a 5.5&#8221; display, <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/2016/10/16/xiaomi-meri-rumoured-feature-house-processor/">Xiaomi&#8217;s in-house processor named &#8221;Pinecone&#8221;</a>, and the release date is still unknown. All these contradictions lead us to doubt the authenticity of the images. So until Xiaomi officially launches this phone, we&#8217;ll have to take this with a pinch of salt.</p>

The latest is a set of leaked renders of the Xiaomi Mi 5C showing the front and back view of the sleek device.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/mi-5c/"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-108052" src="http://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/mi-5c.jpg?x10805" alt="xiaomi mi 5c" width="600" height="469" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/mi-5c.jpg 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/mi-5c-300x235.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></a></p>
<p>The latest leaked renders surfaced on Weibo and although the user did not give a specific name to the phone model (pictured above), the image looked very similar to the previous renders of the Mi 5C.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/mi-5c-3/"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-108054" src="http://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/mi-5c-3.jpg?x10805" alt="xiaomi mi 5c" width="686" height="672" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/mi-5c-3.jpg 686w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/mi-5c-3-300x294.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 686px) 100vw, 686px" /></a></p>
<p>Popular tipster @kjuma also revealed similar renders of the device sporting a different color theme on the display. In one of the renders which seem to be a screenshot from one of the e-commerce website, the device is labelled as Mi 5C with the code-name Meri as well but the 999 Yuan price tag might be incorrect.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/mi-5c-2/"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-108053" src="http://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/mi-5c-2.jpg?x10805" alt="mi-5c-2" width="422" height="750" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/mi-5c-2.jpg 422w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/mi-5c-2-169x300.jpg 169w" sizes="(max-width: 422px) 100vw, 422px" /></a></p>

<p>The Xiaomi Mi 5C features a unique and beautiful design, sporting n all-metal body surrounding a 5.5-inch display with 2.5D glass on top. There is also narrow bezels surrounding the display. The device is said to be Xiaomi&#8217;s first smartphone to feature its in-house Pinecone processor supported by 3GB of RAM. The Mi 5C will also feature a front fingerprint sensor embedded under the oblong-shaped home button. The recent leaks could be indicators that the Mi 5C would be released soon and of course, earlier rumor hint at the device being available for the 12.12 sales next month.</p>

We recently got feelers<a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/meizu"> Meizu </a>was working on a MediaTek P10-powered Meizu Note 5. Well,<a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/xiaomi"> Xiaomi</a> is also not left out as the company is reportedly working on a couple of devices, one of which is the Xiaomi Mi 5C.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/xiaomi-mi-5c/"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-107529" src="http://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/xiaomi-mi-5c.jpg?x10805" alt="xiaomi-mi-5c" width="608" height="508" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/xiaomi-mi-5c.jpg 608w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/xiaomi-mi-5c-300x251.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/xiaomi-mi-5c-95x80.jpg 95w" sizes="(max-width: 608px) 100vw, 608px" /></a></p>
<p>The Xiaomi Mi 5C was first imprinted on our psyche in early October when we saw renders alleged to be of the device. Recall that we were also treated to renders and specs of a device code-named Meri on GeekBench and AnTuTu benchmarks sporting a self-developed Pinecone processor.. The latest report hints that the said Xiaomi Meri is in really, the Mi 5C.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/xiaomi-mi-5c-2/"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-107526" src="http://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/xiaomi-mi-5c-2.jpg?x10805" alt="xiaomi-mi-5c-2" width="600" height="698" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/xiaomi-mi-5c-2.jpg 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/xiaomi-mi-5c-2-258x300.jpg 258w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></a></p>
<p>The Mi 5C is in fact said to be a lower version of the highly popular Mi 5 which sported a sleek design. From the renders, the Mi 5C actually looks like the Mi 5 and without doubt, also look similar to the device code-named Meri.</p>
<p style="text-align: center"><strong><span style="color: #ff0000">Read More:</span> <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/2016/11/17/alleged-live-pictures-xiaomi-mi-mix-mini-leaked/">Alleged Live Pictures of Xiaomi Mi Mix Mini Leaked</a></strong></p>

<p>The Mi 5C had earlier been rumored to come with an all-metal rounded body. The device also features the trademark oblong Mi button just under the display. There is a fingerprint sensor on the device which is embedded on the home button. The Mi 5C is also touted as having a 2.5D arc glass on the display with an entirely thin body build.</p>

The new phone which features an all-metal black body is said to be a new Redmi phone, though some say it might be the Xiaomi Mi 5c.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-101682" src="http://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/s_a28a505093e14727b0328dbd059509c4.jpg?x10805" alt="s_a28a505093e14727b0328dbd059509c4" width="600" height="798" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/s_a28a505093e14727b0328dbd059509c4.jpg 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/s_a28a505093e14727b0328dbd059509c4-226x300.jpg 226w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></p>
<p style="text-align: justify">The front of the phone is fitted with a 2.5D glass and appears to feature the same fingerprint groove as the Mi 5s which means it may come with an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify">The back has a dual tone black coating with the top part that houses the camera, LED flash, and the antenna; and the lower part, having a darker shade of black compared to the rest of the body. .The camera is placed at the top left corner of the phone beside the flash. The phone keeps the power button and volume rocker on the left like all the new Xiaomi phones.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-101680" src="http://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/s_634e197ffce449d08547c92a72bfae8b.jpg?x10805" alt="s_634e197ffce449d08547c92a72bfae8b" width="600" height="799" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/s_634e197ffce449d08547c92a72bfae8b.jpg 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/s_634e197ffce449d08547c92a72bfae8b-225x300.jpg 225w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></p>
<p style="text-align: justify">One of the images leaked includes the about phone section of the phone. There&#8217;s 3GB of RAM on board, 64GB of storage, and an octa-core processor clocked at 2.2GHz. It&#8217;s also running Android Marshmallow 6.0 based on MIUI 8. The funny thing about the image is the security patch which is dated December 2015 which is pretty old. The page also lists that the phone supports VoLTE.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-101681 size-full" src="http://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/s_311a1aae98794d77981f9d2908a5b923.jpg?x10805" width="600" height="682" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/s_311a1aae98794d77981f9d2908a5b923.jpg 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/s_311a1aae98794d77981f9d2908a5b923-264x300.jpg 264w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></p>
<p style="text-align: justify">The images were posted on Weibo by a user whose account name translates to @jumping cute tiger with an accompanying text saying it&#8217;s a new Redmi phone with a Mediatek Helio P20 chip and 3GB of RAM priced like the Mi 5s.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify">The base version of the Xiaomi Mi 5s starts at 1999 Yuan ($300) and features a Snapdragon 821 processor. No one will pick a phone with a Helio P20 phone over a Snapdragon 821 phone selling at the same price. So we want to believe that price is just a wild guess.</p>
